Esthec® Terrace Esthec® chose the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan to present its latest product innovation. The existing plank width of Esthec® Terrace has been supplemented by two new widths. Under the name Esthec® SRX, Esthec® now offers a new range of three plank widths that perfectly combine with each other. This provides architects and designers with even more design freedom. Esthec® Terrace is now also available in plank widths of 72.5 mm (S) and 175 mm (X). These widths perfectly complement the existing plank width of 100 mm (R). Together, the S and R planks (including clips) have the same width as the X plank. This opens up endless creative possibilities to combine the three plank widths. The complete range of three plank widths are placed on the market under the name of Esthec® SRX. The Esthec® SRX range was developed in close collaboration with architects and designers with the aim of giving them even more design freedom, says Commercial Director of Esthec® Marcel van der Spek. “As an innovative company, Esthec® has always invested in new developments and improvements. They constantly monitor market needs and developments. The SRX range allows architects and designers to completely move away from the standard plank pattern of traditional materials and create any design they wish.” Come and see the range on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

AIPH Since 1948, AIPH has united horticultural producers in an international community that thrives to this day. Much has changed in that time. Technologies advanced, cities rose from the ground, and we have become more connected than ever. As a result, our essential bond with nature has been weakened. AIPH strives to reignite and uphold an appreciation of plants that we believe is a basic human instinct. We support the work of grower associations globally and together we champion a prosperous industry, growing plants that enhance lives, advance societies and sustain our planet, for this generation and the next. We support and promote the work of our members – the grower organisations around the world. Our statistical yearbook gives an unrivalled view of industry trends and developments. We celebrate the most progressive growers through AIPH International Grower of the Year Awards. Our Green City initiative promotes the essential role of plants in creating vibrant urban areas in which people and businesses can thrive. We are responsible for the world’s finest horticultural expositions and provide organisers with expert guidance to create world class spectacles. The AIPH are proud supporters of the LANDSCAPE Show and wish all exhibitors and delegates a successful event.

APL The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) has been formed to help consumers make that informed choice. Formed in 1995, the APL, which operates as a Specialist Group of the Horticultural Trades Association, represents landscapers who have met a required standard of professionalism. Members of the Association are registered with the government endorsed TrustMark Scheme and are regularly inspected and agree to follow a customer charter with clients. All APL members also hold the appropriate insurance and have traded for a minimum of two years. The APL provides homeowners with an even greater choice when selecting a landscaper. As a customer, you can feel confident that the APL landscaper you have chosen has met prescribed professional standards. The APL chooses to exhibit at the LANDSCAPE Show as it is the essential trade event for landscape designers who we can highlight the Trustmark accreditation to and show them how it can benefit their business. The APL host regular cluster group meetings around the country. These meetings offer members networking opportunities and sharing of ideas and best practice in the industry through the course of the year. Tobermore Tobermore supplied Westpoint Homes with a variety of vintage themed paving and walling products for the developer’s countrychic new housing scheme, Corstorphine Gate in Edinburgh. The development was designed by Covell Matthews Architects and combines 24 private apartments, designed with luxurious interiors and modern amenities. Tobermore’s nostalgic Country Stone in the blended tones of Cedar was used to help construct the homes. Country Stone is a cost-effective alternative to natural stone but emulates the rustic aesthetic of natural stone and helps create an aged, nostalgic look. The incorporation of Country Stone created a beautiful balance of traditional style against the dark, contemporary render used on areas of the apartment buildings. Paving was selected as a complementary hard landscaping choice to the apartment buildings. Tobermore’s Pedesta block paving in soft Bracken and Charcoal and Historic Flags also in Bracken, were specified for the grounds. Pedesta is a highly versatile product with a stunning, smooth finish. As the rectangular profile allows the creation of distinctive laying patterns, the product was laid in a beautiful herringbone pattern. Historic Flags are a traditional style product, and were a wonderful accompaniment to Pedesta at the Westpoint Homes development. In contrast to Pedesta, Historic Flags are manufactured with fettled edges and a riven face which add to their vintage charm. The combination of paving and walling products supplied by Tobermore undoubtedly helped achieve the traditional, country style and character prevalent at the development Come and see samples on the Tobermore stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

BALI Back in the early seventies when BALI was formed, the landscape industry as a cohesive entity really didn’t exist. There were however companies providing garden construction and maintenance who wanted their professionalism recognised and, even more importantly, wanted to differentiate themselves from the ‘cowboy’ element attracted by a largely unregulated industry. Since 1972, BALI has been setting the industry benchmark for landscape construction and maintenance. In 1976 the first BALI National Landscape Awards took place and this year celebrate their 40th anniversary. Industry names such as designer Andy Sturgeon cite the BALI Awards as instrumental in fuelling their early ambitions as they entered the industry. Suppliers of industry-related products and services have always been a part of BALI’s membership history in acknowledgement of the fact that, no matter how good the design and the skills of the contractor, quality products and specialist services are fundamental to the success of a landscape project. BALI’s Affiliate (supplier) members support BALI in a host of ways and provide invaluable technical expertise to the membership. Their products grace the show gardens at Chelsea and probably every prestige scheme across the country. 2016 also marks the 10th anniversary of the introduction of BALI’s Registered Designer membership. This was a major landmark for BALI and acknowledged the importance of designers and contractors working together, each understanding the challenges of the other, rather than the two disciplines working in isolation in their own bunkers. BALI’s current membership stands at just shy of 850. It is the UK’s largest trade body for the landscape industry and the only one that brings design, construction and maintenance together. And 44 years after it was founded its members continue to be the ones setting the industry benchmark for landscape design, construction, maintenance and product excellence. BALI believes that the LANDSCAPE Show offers its Affiliate members an outstanding opportunity to present their products and services to top flight designers and contractors. Their clients expect the very best in innovation, design and quality and this important event in the industry calendar is exactly the place to find it.

Lumena Lighting Lumena’s passion for garden lighting goes infinitely further than the initial factor of great product design. Light fittings supplied to landscapers and designers, whether a brass bollard or a stainless steel spotlight, are all well-considered design choices that will ultimately serve the same purpose to the end user – to provide attractive light. Lighting can transform a space beautifully when darkness falls, and one of the main aims for a successful scheme is avoiding ‘Glare’. This occurs where a bright light is directly in line with your sight, causing you to look away from the source. Glare is never attractive; discrete lighting with an even spread is the ideal solution here. Solving the ‘glare problem’ and experimenting with lighting effects is now easier than ever with Lumena’s new filters and lenses. Their low cost (under £5.00) and easy replacement, makes different colours and effects an interesting prospect at an affordable price. The brand new 50mm orange / amber dichroic lens is one of seven colours which provide clean saturated colour that will never burn out or fade. The lenses can be changed periodically to create eye catching and unique effects; a colour for every season. As well as new honeycomb lenses, Lumena offer a 50mm diameter frosted glass filter which will work effectively in most in-ground and spike lights. Both lenses create softer, more dispersed light effects, turning a spotlight beam into an elegant ‘wash’ effect. View the full range and register for a Trade Account at the Lumena stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Europlanters As more and more, young business professionals working in London are moving further away from the city and using fast transport connections to commute into work. Property developers such as London Square Developments are using this opportunity to offer contemporary living accommodation in the suburbs of the busy city. On a bustling stretch of upper Richmond Road, Putney, sits London Square developments. This new 11 storey iconic building which shapes the Putney skyline is positioned between a selection of up market and quirky, independent retailers, restaurants and bars. Designed by internationally acclaimed architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris the scheme of 113, one two, and three bedroom apartments which have been carefully planned to make maximum use of the light and space, whilst 19,000sqft is reserved for office and retail space. Within the 11 levels there are 8 premier apartments with south facing balconies and winter gardens overlooking the ever changing London Skyline along with communal roof terraces on the 6th floor. Europlanters supplied 65 large planters 1050/500/600mmhigh along with ten bespoke sizes to create a ‘green space’ on balconies for each Premier apartment on 8 of the levels and outside the Stylish sales suite. The planters were made in in RAL 7024 to compliment the finish of the building and the ends were cut out to create the look of long continuous planting beds. Liaising closely with Ambience Landscapes each level was completed throughout the stages of development and all levels were completed ahead of schedule, ready for the grand opening. ‘Having visited the site personally, I am very proud that Europlanters have been involved in such a highly esteemed project’ said John Wilkes, Director of Europlanters ‘it is wonderful to see, as a British manufacturer our products being used to enhance the rooftops of this new development.’ If you would like information on how Europlanters can help with your next project visit them on their stand at the LANDSCAPE show in Battersea Park this September.

GLDA The Garden and Landscape Designers Association (GLDA) is synonymous with professional garden design and is currently celebrating 20 years since its foundation. The association represents some of Ireland’s leading garden and landscape designers in Ireland, and its growing membership provides a wide range of services nationwide. Through its ongoing training opportunities in various aspects of design, its practical workshops and field trips, its intelligence gathering network, and most publicly, its highly acclaimed annual international design seminar, the GLDA disseminates new information on methods, techniques and current best practice in landscape design and horticulture, and has created a new demand for improved quality and increased availability of a much wider and more interesting selection of plants. The GLDA has set standards for its members which allow them to stand out from the crowd. In addition, in a profession that can be quite insular, it allows the pooling of ideas and knowledge and a valuable social network. As part of this ever expanding network we are delighted to be involved with the LANDSCAPE Show where we can connect with a wider audience and showcase our design skills.

Nordic Garden Buildings The Nordic Garden Buildings Brand Ambassador program is now a year old, over the past 12 months they have seen a marked increase in “sign up’s” to the program and happily a significant increase in the success of the program. A number of Brand Ambassadors across the UK are focusing primarily on the proposition of Nordic Garden Buildings in conjunction with garden design, landscaping and building recommendation for their clients. Alternative garden building manufacturers have created certain issues that the Nordic proposition resolves. As Nordic take responsibility of the project management including delivery and installation, their Brand Ambassadors are seeing the benefits of suggesting a superior building to sell with less after sales issues, therefore taking less of their time in corrective works, seeing a short lead time for the delivery and installation of the building and much more attractive commission rates than other manufacturers offer. A recent project saw a Nordic ‘Melbourne’ Pavilion integrated into the design of a landscaping project. The specification of the project included a central focal point of a design driven garden building that should be usable throughout the year and have the durability to remain attractive but with little ongoing maintenance costs. Due to the flexibility of options, the Nordic Garden Building became bespoke to their client’s requirements, including frame colour to roof type selection. For more information about the Nordic Garden Buildings range and the Brand Ambassador program visit their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Green-Tech The Green-tree soils and growing media division has increased its UK coverage with the addition of two new partner production sites covering the Heathrow and Basingstoke areas. These sites will provide contractors in London and the South East with improved access to the Green-tree brand and high quality British standard topsoil. After requests from landscapers, ground workers and architects in the London area for improved access to British standard topsoil, the team behind the brand went in a search for the perfect partner sites. The new Heathrow site, located a stone’s throw away from the airport is geared up to accommodate the London and London West areas, working in partnership with the UK’s leading independent construction and building materials group Brett Aggregates. The new Basingstoke site - also referred to locally as Little Bushy Warren will provide coverage for the Hampshire and South Coast regions. Green-tree will distribute the Pro-Grow brand of British Standard topsoil from this site operated by Veolia, a long standing partner of the business. The topsoil at both sites conforms to BS3882:2015 standards, independently tested by Tim O’Hare Associates. Green-tree topsoil is favoured amongst contractors due to its excellent fertility levels for soft landscaping projects, its year-round availability and the peace of mind that the topsoil supplied will be the same high quality from the first load to the last. The Pro-Grow topsoil, distributed in partnership with Veolia, is highly regarded within the industry and provides a consistent, organic growing medium for landscape and amenity projects.

Members of the Association are registered with the government endorsed TrustMark scheme and are regularly inspected and agree to follow a Customer Charter. The APL is the only landscaping scheme operator of Trustmark, a Government endorsed initiative that promotes professional trades to consumers. Institution of Lighting Professionals Michael Perry One of the UK’s most well-known New Plant Developers has re-branded his website to act as a hub for his social media accounts, new plant stories and general gardening and plant advice. The site also has extensive information on how his job role works, with links to his presenting work on terrestrial and shopping television. Michael Perry chose the brand ‘Plant Geek’, as it really sums up how he has always felt about plants, and has a geeky knowledge that shines through in his presenting delivery! The blog section of the website has lots of images and information about his plant travels. There are some interesting articles, where he explains “stitching plants”, all sorts of gardening shortcuts, and he even gives his own awards to some plants from the yearly trial. Find Michael at www.mrplantgeek.com, follow him on twitter @gardening_greek or find him on facebook under @mrplantgeek. Michael is one of the featured speakers at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

The Institution of Lighting Professionals (ILP) is the UK and Ireland’s largest and most influential professional lighting association, dedicated solely to excellence in lighting. It was founded in 1924 as the Association of Public Lighting Engineers and has since evolved, as the ILP, to include lighting designers, consultants and engineers amongst its 2,000 strong membership. The ILP is always keen to promote excellence in all forms of lighting and one area it is passionate about is its support for landscape lighting. The ILP has already raised the awareness of the benefits of good lighting for landscapes through the launch of the publication ‘Lighting Landscapes’ in 2014 which forms part of a longstanding campaign to educate clients, planners and landscape architects of the deep necessity and enormous benefits of great landscape lighting. The book is also a celebration of the last 5 years’ progressive and adventurously lit landscapes. The ILP has previously supported the LANDSCAPE Show with the presence of lighting experts like Mark Cooper, past President of the ILP who spoke about the relationship between light, colour, texture and shade in landscape design at the 2015 show. This year’s show introduces the renowned lighting designer Mark Ridler, Vice President of architectural lighting for the ILP and Head of BDP Lighting who will be talking on the merits of good landscape lighting. Richard Frost, Chief Executive of the ILP said; ‘The institution is extremely keen to support the LANDSCAPE Show again in 2016 and promote the benefits of excellent lighting in this sector’.

Perennial Perennial Life’s challenges such as illness, injury, debt, bereavement or redundancy could strike any of us at any time. Perennial exists to help everyone in our industry if ever they are in times of need, but the continuation of the charity’s services is dependent on support from businesses within the industry. An easy way for companies to show their support is by joining the Perennial Partner scheme. The Perennial Partner scheme generates an essential, regular income for the charity, enabling it to plan its services for the future and commit to recruiting the caseworkers and debt advisers so heavily relied upon by its clients. Businesses can choose the level of support that is appropriate for their business - Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze, ranging from £5,000 to £100. Last year the LANDSCAPE Show signed up as a Platinum Partner. Jeremy Storey-Walker, Event Director commented: “When I heard about the work that Perennial did, helping those who work or who have worked in horticulture, I was convinced that The LANDSCAPE Show should support them by becoming a Perennial Partner.” All funds Perennial receives are put to good use, for example £50 could pay for new boots allowing a horticulturist to return to work or a microwave so they could have a hot meal, £500 will help furnish a flat for someone who was previously homeless and £1000 will buy a new boiler for a family living without heating or hot water.

Perennial is the only charity that looks after everyone working in horticulture, including landscaping and its associated professions, providing a lifeline when times get tough. Challenges such as illness, injury, debt, bereavement or redundancy could strike any of us at any time. Perennial is there to offer free and confidential advice, as well as practical and emotional support, for as long as it is needed and that extends to spouses, partners and dependent children. Many of us support charities that are close to our hearts as a way of giving something back, and where better to direct that support than close to home to help the people within our own industry? An easy way for companies to show their support is by signing up to the Perennial Partner scheme, where the business makes an annual donation by choosing the level appropriate for their business - Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze. The continuation of the charity’s work relies heavily on support from the trade, but there is still a way to go before Perennial, and the help it offers, is known by everyone in the industry. By exhibiting at LANDSCAPE this September, Perennial aims to raise awareness and increase support. Please visit Perennial’s stand at the show to find out more.

Wildflower Turf Last Spring, a park was created in London for the first time in one hundred years at Greenwich Peninsula Gardens. 3,850m² of a mixture of Wildflower Landscape Turf and Shade Tolerant Turf was taken to Greenwich Peninsula, to be installed by Gavin Jones. Alys Fowler teamed up with Thomas Hoblyn (clients: Knight Dragon), to create a biodiverse setting in an urban area. Not only did they use Wildflower Turf to create serene meadows on the banks, they installed boxes for bee keeping, apple trees and wild herbs. The project is a prime example of a state-of-the-art urban area introducing a more environmentally-friendly atmosphere to welcome all kinds of nature for the public to engage with. The area was challenging, due to not only having high foot-traffic, but also containing contaminated soil and steep mounds, making installation on the banks complex. In this situation, the easiest option would have been to install lawn turf, however, Alys was determined to introduce biodiversity into the project, so wildflowers were the chosen solution. The wildflowers flourished magnificently, despite the area having heavy public use at the opening event shortly after installation. A year on the wildflowers are still thriving. The contrast between the prominent architectural framework against the sculpted green mounds and wildflower banks creates the most phenomenal setting. Come and talk to Wildflower Turf about your next project on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Stone Carpet comes in a large variety of colours and stone sizes and can be blended to produce a look to rival all high end floor finishes, enabling a truly unique bespoke flooring solution. You can also use stone carpet around swimming pools and exterior areas for an extra burst of colour. You can also incorporate decorative materials such as marble and glass onto vertical surfaces to create a practical feature wall which is unique and durable. These are ideal for high use areas like kitchens and bathrooms as they are easy to keep clean, look stunning and are a great alternative to tiles and feature wall papers.

Streetscape is an award winning social enterprise. We provide apprenticeships in landscape gardening to 18-25 year olds who are long-term unemployed, helping them to build the skills, experience and attributes they need to fulfil their dreams and move into and retain work: growing lives, transforming landscapes. In so doing we design, landscape and maintain gardens across South London for residential, commercial and communitybased clients. Since 2010 we have earned a reputation for delivering beautifully constructed gardens to suit all plot sizes and budgets. We are driven by one, simple, overarching goal: that each and every long-term unemployed young person we provide an apprenticeship to then moves into, and retains work, following their time with us. The LANDSCAPE Show is a fantastic opportunity for us create greater awareness of our apprenticeships within the industry, in turn giving our apprentices a larger network of companies to approach for work placements once their year with Streetscape is complete. As a charity operating as a landscape contractor, the LANDSCAPE Show also links us to many new suppliers, meaning we can provide an even better service to our clients. The show gets bigger and better every year and we’re looking forward to another successful show in 2016!

Come and see samples from their range on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Vertology Living Walls Vertology is a vertical greening company at the forefront of providing solutions to urban environments. With the world rapidly urbanizing (we will have 40 megacities – of over 10 million inhabitants – by 2030) we need new ways of bringing Nature into the spaces where these people live. In such vast conurbations it is not easy to “get out of town” for a quick walk in the country, so we must bring the country to them! Space for landscapes within cities is always limited and may not be initially valued and planned into such rapidly growing areas. Vertical greening, in the form of living walls and façade systems, offer a realistic retrofit to many vertical surfaces, with a negligible ground-space requirement. If there is a wall, it can be greened, indoors or out. The growth of such cities will bring ever-increasing pressure upon the environment, in terms of resources used and pollution created. Vertical greening systems can make a positive contribution to alleviating this, removing pollutants from both air and water, mitigating stormwater runoff, cleansing building greywater, reducing Urban Heat Island effect, damping down sound and of course, giving homes and food to many insects and small birds for urban biodiversity. Best of all, we get that much-needed biophilic contact with Nature. Vertology is dedicated to creating systems that fulfill these needs internationally – come and see them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Long Rake Spar There is an increasing popularity for the use of colour coated aggregates to create unique and individual floor coatings and designs for both internal and external projects and as part of their long term expansion strategy, Long Rake recently acquired the SightGRIP business and brand from Hoben International Ltd. This Sightgrip collection provides a choice of pigmented aggregates in a selection of industry favourite colours, which can be applied to surfaces such as concrete, asphalt, tarmac, wood, steel or aluminum. Whilst initially developed for the use within Anti-Skid sectors, in particular for demarcation purposes, the scope and potential for these products to be utilised within a general landscaping design is huge. These colour coated products have a close synergy with Long Rakes existing Grantex range, providing highly visible, hard wearing products that can be utilised within a multitude of landscaping sectors. It is particularly effective within a modern, contemporary project and has been successful in areas such a school playgrounds with the bright colours appealing to children. They are able to coat most aggregates to fit with individual requirements and all products are produced specifically to order from their head offices in Derbyshire. Long Rake will be providing the same levels of industry expertise, attention to quality control and customer service as Hoben International Ltd, ensuring that the SightGRIP brand continues to develop and progress.

Timber Decking and Cladding Association The arguments for utilising timber as the material to grow our carbon economy are multi-faceted. They include the fact that roughly one tonne of carbon is stored for every metre cubed of timber used – this makes timber one of the safest and most effective carbon stores available. Also in managed European forests there are more trees planted than harvested, making timber the only truly renewable mainstream building material. And the list goes on. There are even stronger arguments to use timber correctly to get the most out of this miracle of nature. The Timber and Cladding Association (TDCA) exists to provide you with independent guidance through a range of resources and services that will help you to build your decking and cladding structures with long term performance in mind. The TDCA website at www.tda.org.uk covers all you need to know in order to effectively design, install and maintain timber decking or cladding. With publications free to download, technical guidance, where to source good quality materials and even a 90 second video to give you basic know-how in an instant, it is a ‘must visit’ for anyone thinking about designing or installing a decking or cladding. The TDCA also operates DeckMark and CladMark quality accreditation schemes to give you added assurance about the materials you are purchasing. The TDCA are proud supporters of the LANDSCAPE Show and look forward to meeting you on their stand at the show this September in Battersea Park.

As part of LANDSCAPE’s ongoing commitment towards uniting the industry and enhancing the professional qualifications of it’s practitioners, all of the seminars at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show will qualify for CPD learning points. This accreditation means that attending any of the Seminar Sessions hosted in all theatres now counts towards delegates’ Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points. CPD is defined as ‘a commitment to structured skills enhancement and personal or professional competence’ and organisations that are granted membership by the CPD Certification Service must clearly demonstrate expertise in their field and provide a place for industry to turn to for advice and guidance.

LANDSCAPE which opens in Battersea Park, London on the 13th of September 2016, will be running an extensive free two-day seminar programme. The full programme will be available to view online in August at www.landscapeshow.co.uk.

On achieving CPD certification for the programmes, Event Director Jeremy Storey-Walker says: “We are delighted to offer visitors to LANDSCAPE the broadest range of free and relevant content delivered by some of the highest-level experts in the industry. We believe this exciting offer is enhanced further through the ability of delegates at these presentations to credit their attendance towards their CPD.” “Being accepted as a member of the CPD Certification Scheme also reinforces the quality of LANDSCAPE’s seminar programme and the real value that delegates can gain from attending these sessions.” Attendees will receive their Certificates of Attendance at the end of each session they attend.

Register for your FREE tickets to attend by visiting www.landscapeshow.co.uk

Categories that are eligible: All schools with students up to Key Stage 2 (i.e. up to age 11) All schools with students up to Key Stage 4 (up to age 16) All special schools

As part of the continuing initiative to engage and enthuse young people with the world of horticulture and landscaping the LANDSCAPE Show are launching a new competition to all schools. With the aim of generating conversations covering environmental and ecology issues the competition will hopefully enable students to talk about birds, their habitats and their needs. The hope is that conversations will be had about the local environment, the need to provide for wildlife in our future plans and what they bring to us on a wider scale. Topics should cover schools, high rise living, shopping centres, individual housing and office developments and their impact on the local wildlife and how we can make sure that we continue to live in harmony.

The Brief Build a bird house! Be as creative as you like but do say which birds you would like to live in it by providing a 200 word description of the ‘house’ . Perhaps as part of an English project you could write about where you would put the bird house and what would happen inside it. (Perhaps instead provide a short video presentation for those that are unable to write.) Don’t forget to make the entrance the right size for the birds you want to attract. Send through the working drawings with dimensions and describe what materials it is made from. The finished ‘house’ should be no more than 30cms x 30cms x 30cms and suitable for wall mounting.

The Prize The winners will receive an exclusive visit from Ann-Marie Powell who will present a special trophy. (Ann-Marie is from BBC2’s The Great Chelsea Garden Challenge in 2015 and BBC coverage of the Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show alongside the likes of Alan Titchmarsh, Monty Don and other familiar faces.)

Only one entry per school in each age group is allowed. All entries must be registered by close of business on 27th May 2016. Please email Jeremy@landscapeshow.co.uk in order to do so. Please advise the name of the school, the age group, the person responsible at the school and a contact telephone number. You will then be sent a confirmation email that you have been accepted and forwarded further relevant information.

Do check out the website for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, who have lots of facts and figures about birds and how to look after them. www.rspb.org.uk/forprofessionals/teachers/

Delivery All finished bird houses must be delivered to a London address at the expense of the entrant. No responsibility will be taken for damaged deliveries or lost entries. All finalists will be displayed at this years’ LANDSCAPE Trade Show Event in Battersea Park where they will be judged by a panel of industry experts. They will then be on public view within Battersea Park after the event so that schools may visit and see the winning entries. (Further details to follow.)

Kate Gould Kate Gould recently designed a garden which belongs to a couple who had downsized from a much larger property with over an acre of land to look after. The brief was very much a contemporary take on a courtyard garden that while not maintenance free, would be considerably less work than that which they had left behind. Requirements were fairly straightforward – a greenhouse and potting shed were to be included as the owners wanted to continue growing vegetables. They also requested a water feature of some type which was to be new and contemporary to contrast an otherwise mainly traditional feel. Since the owners decided that they did not want a lawn, the planting would need to work especially hard during the winter to provide colour and interest in the absence of a green space. A large percentage of evergreens would therefore need to be included in the selection while the colour was to be mainly perennials rather than annual bedding. Kate set about to design what has in effect become a courtyard garden with raised beds and cobble paths which are set around a modern globe shaped water feature in front of a bespoke lightweight metal pergola. Climbing roses and Clematis are grown over this for scent and colour. Another water feature was included, set within stone arches backed with a contemporary mirror polished steel and repeated on both sides of the garden. The owner actually installed these himself. Pebble paths, sandstone paving and old stock bricks with stone capping create the sense of a traditional space but the use of modern water features and furniture makes this a garden that has the best of both worlds and one that will look good for a very long time, especially in the capable green fingers of the clients. Kate Gould is an award winning garden designer for London and the Home Counties and a regular exhibitor at the Chelsea Flower Show. She is also one of the featured speakers at this years’ LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September.

Nilufer Danis Nilufer Danis recently designed a garden for a young couple with their three young children who have been renovating their new house in North London. Those renovation and landscape works are still continuing and all works are going to be completed this summer. The client brief was to create a green open space and a temporary children play area for their kids in a modern setting. The existing garden looks like redundant and needs a new soul and functionality. The new scheme offers a high quality minimalistic and contemporary appearance while creating opportunities for informal gathering as well as space in which to relax. The proposal includes outdoor dining area with BBQ facilities, children playing area, seating area with an outdoor wood fired heating, table tennis, timber decking patio, stepping stones, pleached and multi–stem trees, ornamental hedges, year round colourful herbaceous planting and a large area of grass. The outdoor dining set including BBQ facilities within the upper terrace area will provide a functional and relaxing environment as well as a fantastic view point for the all garden.

The children play area will include all natural materials such as timber platform house, wooden swinging horse, tools, boulders and bark surface to provide a natural and safety space for children. The seating area with the outdoor wood fired heating will provide a cosy and relaxing environment as well as a strong focal point which will draw attention from the house to the end of the garden. The proposed pleached hornbeam trees are going to be planted closely to provide an attractive architectural feature in a minimalistic and modern style. The proposed tall ornamental yew hedges along the boundaries will provide a screening and a modern green structure for the garden in all seasons. The ornamental shrub and herbaceous planting will create a year round interest with their attractive colour, texture and form to the space. The grass area will provide flexibility for informal gatherings and children sports activities. Nilufer is one of the featured speakers at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park. Come along and listen to her.

Fonix Outdoor deck speakers also referred to as a ‘vibration surface speaker’ are a surface speaker which create music, audio effects and clear voice communication from light and heavy resonant surfaces such as wood, metal, glass and drywall. They work by emitting a low amplitude vibration, which ensures surfaces are not cracked or damaged by excessive vibration. Outdoor deck speakers can be mounted in drives, walkways, under patio surfaces and under wooden decks. Outdoor deck speakers allow you to turn wooden decking into a waterproof outdoor speaker. They require no maintenance, and will not deteriorate with time. Outdoor deck speakers work all year round and are weather resistant to sun, rain, snow and frost. There is no more need for outdoor speakers or untidy extension cables, outdoor deck speakers are completely concealed. No one will ever know where the sound is coming from. Outdoor deck speakers are ideal for at home, in bars, restaurants and tourist attractions and are available from leading audio visual suppliers Fonix. Fonix offers a wide range of audio visual equipment suitable for the great outdoors. Come and see their products for yourself on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

CED Natural Stone This year, Enterprise Plants brought maths and nature together at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show with their exhibition, which celebrates the Begonia escargot and explores the Fibonacci spiral throughout nature. CED were pleased to donate materials to this exhibition, which will enable key elements of the design to be built. A Fibonacci spiral, the focus of Enterprise Plants’ exhibition, is a series of connected quarter-circles drawn inside an array of squares that have Fibonacci numbers for dimensions. Because of the nature of the sequence, all squares fit perfectly together. Fibonacci numbers and spirals are not only of interest to mathematicians. The Fibonacci sequence is displayed across nature in a variety of ways, appearing in all sorts of different forms. From the spirals of hurricanes to a plants leaf arrangement, to the scales of a pineapple and of a pinecone. It is this that designer Matthew Monckton of Enterprise Plants demonstrated at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show. Situated within the Great Pavilion, the Enterprise Plants exhibition consisted of two ‘L’ shaped greenwalls, installed back-to-back, standing at approximately 3.2m in height. Within the greenwalls will be the first example of a Fibonacci spiral. Once ‘inside’ the greenwalls, you will walk on to the biggest spiral within the exhibition. To create the spiral, Matthew Monckton used CEDAgravel to form the squares, which were then filled with pearly quartz pebbles. Black basalt setts were used to form the actual spiral, with some of the setts having to be cut to a bespoke size. CED are one of the exhibitors at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park, come along and visit their stand to see samples of their entire range.

Faith Ramsay Naomi House and Jack’s Place is a hospice and respite centre for children and young adults with life-limiting conditions based near Winchester. Having been open for over 15 years, the Trustees took the decision in 2014 to completely refurbish and extend Naomi House. During this process the existing gardens were either built on or damaged. Faith Ramsay of My Country Garden Design Solutions was asked to design three new garden spaces to accompany the new hospice. These included a Children’s Garden which encouraged the children themselves to come outdoors and play with their siblings and families, as well as allowing for passive and reflective enjoyment of the garden. This space had to be flexible enough to allow for play by very active siblings and inclusive enough to allow engagement by children of all physical and mental abilities. It included roundabouts and swings, water play, sand play and sensory planters encouraging the children to touch, feel and smell the plantings. It included shaded and quiet spaces as well as multi-textured hard landscaping to allow sight-deprived children to identify their place in the garden. The whole design was based on a circular theme reflecting ones journey through life and the horseshow nature of the hospice itself. This leant itself to the combination of land, beach and sea areas reflected through the hard surfacing and play areas and leading to a fantastic bespoke dual entrance/exit multi-level wooden galleon. In addition, Faith was asked to design a private garden that was for the exclusive use of the families with a child using the End of Life suite. This garden was originally intended to be for the families and siblings to use to be able to access a tranquil and healing space at a time of great distress. However, on consultation with staff and families, the design was amended to allow the child themselves on their bed to also be able to be brought out into the garden. Recognising that gardens have a part to play even at the end of our days. This garden had to be accessible at all times of year and day and night and incorporated light and water features to ensure this. Faith is one of the featured speakers at this years’ LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September. Come along and listen to her talk about Designing for Therapeutic Gardens at 1pm on Wednesday 14th.

Allgreen Group Allgreen is proud to have been part of the winning team at RHS Chelsea Flower show 2016. The Telegraph Garden designed by Andy Sturgeon and built by Crocus.co.uk scooped the prestigious ‘Best in Show’ and Gold Medal award with the play of Jurassic materials and ancient timescale in a garden designed to thrill. A spectacular terrain inspired by boyhood adventures, this garden is about ‘the big stuff’ explains Andy. It is about the monumental forces of nature and the mind boggling time span of history. Bold and original, like all of his work, Andy loosely scatters natural Durlston Purbeck Boulders across his garden in a natural variety of sizes ranging from 5kg up to 3ton. These boulders quarried in the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset originating from the Jurassic period and provided a perfect choice of colouring and texture to the character of this beautiful Mediterranean themed garden. With a selection of crushed & graded Purbeck Limestone in a range of sizes, a rocky wild stream was created forming the perfect setting for the oatmeal coloured limestone platforms and bridges. The stunning planting and the wonderful trees are truly magnified by the Purbeck Crushed Stone Dust Render which softly highlights the contrasting colours and shapes in this inspiring garden. For more information on the stone material supplied to this garden please come and talk to us at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park.

The International Association of Horticultural Producers The International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) is responsible for approving the world’s finest horticultural exhibitions, providing organisers with expert guidance to create world class spectacles. With the support of AIPH, EXPO 2016 Antalya, open now in Turkey, is one of the latest exhibitions. AIPH works to promote the benefits of city greening and with the Turkish Ornamental Plants and Products Exporters Association (OAiB) has a garden at the expo, ‘Green Oasis Garden’, which demonstrates the value of ‘living green’ in cities and promotes investment in urban greening. During the expo, AIPH is holding an AIPH International Green City Conference on 27 September which supports the intelligent use of plants in the urban landscape. AIPH approved exhibitions help to create green cities across the globe. With every exhibition further awareness is created for sustainability and environmental issues, and for the horticultural and landscaping industry. Coinciding with EXPO 2016 Antalya, an AIPH International Horticultural Exhibition Forum will also be held on 28-29 September, developed for those organising or considering such an exhibition. Further AIPH-approved International Horticultural Exhibitions include: 2016 Tangshan International Horticultural Exposition (A2/B1), Taichung World Flora Exposition – 2018/19 (A2/B1), International Horticultural Exhibition 2019 Beijing (A1), Floriade Amsterdam Almere 2022 (A1) To further champion the horticulture industry, AIPH hosts the AIPH International Grower of the Year Awards (IGOTY) which recognises best practice in horticultural production. Growers and landscapers are invited to support IGOTY awards 2017, in January 2017 during IPM Essen, Germany. Find out more about all they do at: www.aiph.org

Bituchem Bituchem’s specialist hard landscaping material has been applied to provide a new landscape for Hertfordshire University’s College Lane Campus. As part of a major redevelopment project of the university’s existing campus, Bituchem supplied around 3000m² of its bestselling Natratex Gravel to provide maintenance-free footpaths across the campus. The Natratex Gravel footpaths are just one part of the attractive landscape created by The Landmark Practice (www.thelandmarkpractice.com), which felt that it was the right product to create the desired landscape for the university grounds. Andy Spargo, Principal Landscape Architect at The Landmark Practice commented, “We are very pleased with the aesthetics of the landscape created using Bituchem’s Natratex Gravel and for this reason we would definitely consider it for future projects.” Natratex Gravel is one of Bituchem’s many products that is based on tried and tested asphalt technology to offer a high performance, hardwearing surface. The specialist material uses a clear binder system with decorative buff coloured aggregates, with the appearance of natural stone, to create a durable surface for pedestrian and light vehicular use. Natratex Gravel offers a fully compacted finish compared to real gravel, making it safer for pedestrian use and is virtually maintenance free once applied. The strong resin binder gives the surface a seamless finish that is resistant to deterioration, such as cracks or potholes, to prevent the likelihood of trips and falls whilst offering a soft, smooth surface to reduce injury. Further information from Bituchem please visit their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

British Sugar TOPSOIL Set in the idyllic grounds of the Hinxton Hall estate, south of Cambridge, the Wellcome Genome Campus plays host to groundbreaking scientific research and boasts a publicly-accessible nature reserve. The South Field project on the campus has seen the construction of carefully designed low-rise buildings that blend in with the landscaped surroundings. Laboratories, a data centre, research support facilities and staff amenities, including a restaurant, gym, sports hall and new surface and underground car parking, are all now complete. In 2015 Nurture Landscapes began a five year project to landscape the extensive grounds around the new buildings, using British Sugar TOPSOIL’s Landscape20 product for turfing and tree and shrub planting. 1,380 tonnes of Landscape20 were used in 2015 and this year, to date, over 700 tonnes have been supplied from British Sugar TOPSOIL’s Wissington and Bury St Edmunds manufacturing facilities in East Anglia. Sean Spurdle, Nurture’s site manager at the Wellcome Genome Campus, selected Landscape20 for its certification to BS3882:2015, its sustainability and its suitability for the range of applications required: “Landscape20 is a good product. It’s easy to use, dry, friable and doesn’t have any significant sinkage. As a general purpose topsoil, this product couldn’t be improved. It’s perfect for the general landscaping we carry out at South Field.” Sean also values the excellent service he receives from the sales team at British Sugar TOPSOIL. Garden designers and specifiers will be able to talk to them at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show and see for themselves why Landscape20 is the choice of design and contracting professionals.

The Italianate Garden is an ongoing project over a number of years, which has included restoring and redesigning the many borders and structural planting, while remaining sensitive to the original garden. Consideration has to be given to the gardens history, using plants and structure that enhance its character rather than change it. Restoration design looks to sensitive design and a knowledge of historic garden fashions and the appropriate plants. The Italianate garden has a wealth of old specimen trees and plants including figs, Indian bean trees and Italian Cyprus, as well as enormous Tree Peonies and established topiary, box hedge and trained fruit trees.” She went on to say; “It has been a true inspiration for me, in all my further projects and it is a great privilege to be part of this gardens ongoing story.” Charlie is one of the featured speakers at this years LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September.

It can also be used to help control the waterlogging of surface layers, help vegetation and crops withstand summer droughts and provide anchorage for trees. BS:8601 specifies requirement for the classification, composition and use of subsoils for creating soil profiles intended to support plant growth. British Association of Landscape Industries With over 850 vetted ‘Registered’ members, BALI is by some margin the UK’s largest trade body for landscapers, designers and affiliated suppliers. It is at the heart of the green space industry and its members are some of the most experienced and revered organisations and individuals working in the sector. At this year’s LANDSCAPE Show, BALI members will be exhibiting their products and services and presenting as part of the programme of CPD seminars. And many who are not directly involved with this year’s show will be attending as visitors. BALI members John Wyer MSGD MBALI, David Dodd (The Outdoor Room) and Paul Cowell (PC Landscapes) will be on a BALI panel during the show discussing training for garden designers and whether young designers are entering the workplace with the right skills. This subject matter is particularly apposite in the context of the wider industry skills shortage and is sure to generate some lively debate. Over 18 BALI Affiliate (supplier) members have already signed up to exhibit at the show, with some joining BALI on the BALI Pavilion. Several will be launching new products, and designers and contractors will have the perfect opportunity to talk to sales staff about their future projects. BALI members won a total of 21 medals at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show, including six Gold and nine Silver-Gilt. BALI has a reputation for professional excellence and staff on BALI’s stand within the BALI Pavilion will be delighted to talk to industry professionals – contractors, designers and product and service suppliers – about membership.

Probst Handling Equipment Probst Handling Equipment have been a supplier of materials handling equipment within the UK for 30 years, their equipment is manufactured at their head office in Germany, and has been in operation for over 50 years. Over this time they have become a trusted name for quality products- their range of items include: Landscaping and block paving equipment, vacuum systems, mechanical grabs, hydraulic grabs, all of which are used primarily for the lifting of concrete products. We are coming to that time of year, where everyone likes being outside, enjoying the good weather in their garden and patio area. To help keep paving and slab areas clean and pristine, Probst have a high pressure cleaning device. This can be used as a wheeled system or can have a lance attached to use as a pressure washer. The base of the unit has a skirt around it, which helps to prevent the dirt being sprayed onto areas which don’t require cleaning i.e. walls /windows etc.. unlike normal stand alone pressure cleaners this device doesn’t take out all of the jointing product, which results in the blocks becoming unstable. For more information, please come and see them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

SGD Student Awards Now in its fifth year, the SGD Student Awards are the perfect springboard into a career in garden design. With categories covering commercial and domestic student projects, the vigorously contested SGD Student Awards are open to all SGD student members. SGD Fellow Andy Sturgeon FSGD joins the 2016 judging panel, which includes Arabella St. John Parker from Awards media partner Homes & Gardens magazine. Last year, student member Tom Massey scooped both the Student Domestic and the Student Commercial Awards at the 2015 SGD Ceremony. He said: “Winning two SGD Awards has opened up multiple opportunities for me. I have had job offers, requests to talk at trade shows and various interview requests from the press. It has really helped to get my name out there. Clients have also been really impressed. I don’t yet have an extensive portfolio, but having my work singled out by the SGD really helps to inspire trust and confidence.” Tom has since teamed up with SGD member John Ward to design a Conceptual Garden for the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show in July. The deadline for entry forms/fees for the SGD Student Awards is Friday 12th August with actual submissions due by Sunday 4 September. Students who enter before Friday 22 July are eligible for discounted ‘early bird’ entry fees. For further information, please visit the SGD Awards website www.sgdawards.com

Step Change Design Garden designers Debbie Carroll and Mark Rendell from Step Change Design gathered a lot of data from their research project about the way that residents and staff in care settings use their outside space. Debbie explained, “We made three site visits to a number of the care settings in our study and this helped us to piece together the subtle role of care culture in making access to the garden easy or difficult for their residents.’ Mark added, “The value of visiting a number of times over the summer months was that we could also check out the things we were told during the carefully arranged initial meeting and see for ourselves what was really happening outdoors. We then noticed the subtle effects of Health and Safety, different approaches to risk assessment and a range of Open Door policies.” The designers believe that it’s important when working with care setting clients to check the information they are given in the Client Brief to gain an accurate grasp of the actual care culture in operation. You can hear Debbie and Mark share more of their insights from their research and find out more about what helps and hinders care settings to engage their residents in the outdoors during their presentation and Q & A session on Wednesday 14th September at 1pm at the LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park.
