THE APL WINNERS’ CIRCLE

The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) is a long-standing Partner of The LANDSCAPE Show and we’ve come together to put on display some of the wonderful work of the APL Winners.

Each year since 1995 the APL have been proud to recognise and reward the high standard of landscape contracting carried out by APL registered members. They use the APL Awards to promote members’ commitment to quality landscaping and keeping their customers completely satisfied.

See the winning works on display, network with the contractors behind the projects and make some new connections.

CRESCENT GARDEN

With a beach front view of the crystal-clear blue, US Virgins Island, waters, the Sand Castle on the Beach Hotel was looking to revitalise their property. A boutique hotel with gorgeous textures- Grecian white walls intermixed with brown stone and vibrant pops of colors, its project needs were unique.

In their own words, “For years we have searched for planters which could withstand our sun and sea elements and still have a classy and elegant presence.” Introducing greenery to their tropical space with high durability planters was a non-negotiable. Additionally, there was the challenge of using low maintenance planters that would minimise disturbances to their treasured guests during their stay.

Crescent Garden TruDrop One planters, built with an innovative self-watering system, provided an attractive, effective solution. From the stark caviar black to the bright Alpine white to the muted slate grey, each planter complimented and elevated the color palette of its designated space. The cubed Pinch planters, with their perfectly imperfect dimpled form, highlighted the quirky bohemian outdoor common area. The Mod troughs, in

@landscapeevent #Landscape2023 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK 6

pairs or as a single, provided natural privacy barriers and an added bonus of shade. Most importantly, the 10 year warranty planters come equipped with a large water reservoir for a root watering system that allows plants to take in as much water as they need, taking the work out of daily watering.

This beautiful collaboration was a shining example of Crescent Garden’s mission in designing innovative garden planters for inspired, successful gardening. Visit LANDSCAPE 2023 and join Crescent Garden on their stand to see a selection of their planter collections.

SAM PROCTORCHILTERN GARDEN DESIGN

Known for forging strong working relationships with her clients, where she takes cues from their sense of style and lifestyle preferences as well as the jointly crafted brief, Sam delights in delivering finished gardens that surpass their expectations. Taking them along on the journey is important: whether they are hobby gardeners or nature-deprived city dwellers, Sam manages to inform and educate her clients through a mix of deep knowledge and her effervescent enthusiasm for horticulture. Former non-gardeners now relish the opportunity to harvest their first home grown sweetcorn, French beans and raspberries, and take an interest not only in the plants as they evolve through the seasons, but have also begun to notice and appreciate the wildlife they attract.

Last year Sam was asked to design her first public space: an enclosed courtyard garden within Amersham Hospital that is technically podium roof space, but sheltered within tall walls. This mostly shady courtyard was unloved and weedy, and has now been transformed with elegant and thoughtful design into a lush and immersive space for Nurses in the Dermatology Ward to unwind and relax in their breaks. Lunchtimes now see staff enjoying their meal outdoors surrounded by nature and wildlife, and the nurses

have also commented on how much they enjoy taking care of the plants, watering them first thing in the morning as a quiet, mindful activity that offers an escape from the stresses of their work. Sam is delighted with the progress of this young garden within its first year, and looks forward to it maturing into a really special sanctuary.

Join Sam and a panel of experts hosted by the London College of Garden Design at LANDSCAPE 2023 where they will be sharing their experiences and providing advice on “How To: Launch Your Career in Garden Design”.

APEX SOIL SOLUTIONS

Apex Soil Solutions were called recently by a customer to help with his new build garden. They had been in the house for 2 years and had struggled to get the lawn to grow. It had been reseeded, treated with fertiliser and aerated by hand but with no improvement seen and in winter the garden would then become waterlogged.

It was quickly diagnosed as compacted soil. This, in gardens, can hinder the health and productivity of plants, especially grass and particularly in new builds. Compacted soil is soil that has been tightly packed or compressed most likely due to heavy machinery during the build process, persistent footfall or even over watering. Compacted soil can negatively impact its ability to support plant growth due to the lack of water and oxygen present in the soil.

Using the Vogt Geo Injector, the Apex Soil Solutions team de-compacted the soil drilling down 1m and injecting 8 bar of air into the soil, within this process an addition of enriched biochar is used as a soil improver creating an optimal environment for plant growth. Benefits of this process are: enhanced root growth, as the de-compacted soil allows roots to develop & grow more easily; Improved soil fertility, as the soil now allows for better nutrient absorption and uptake; Increased aeration is created by the cracks and voids, from the air injection, this allows air to circulate more freely, promoting healthy root respiration; and improved drainage.

They had some fantastic feedback from their customer! “After a few months we have a full lawn with no water issues especially after the wet winter we have had. Thank you so much. And I would truly recommend this company”

Visit LANDSCAPE 2023 at the NEC in Birmingham to see Apex Soil Solutions on their stand and find out how they can help with your future projects.

In 1948, a group of ornamental horticultural representatives from the national grower associations of Western Europe came together in Zurich. Their vision inspired them to form the Association Internationale des Producteurs de l’Horticulture (AIPH – International Association of Horticultural Producers), laying the foundations for an international community that exists to this day.

They champion the power of plants by supporting the ornamental horticultural industry – that’s the breeders and growers that grow the plants that enhance lives, advance societies, and sustain our planet for this generation and the next.

Intelligently designed green space improves our environment, human well-being, social cohesion, and economies. They lead global thinking on the successful integration of nature into the built environment through our Green City initiative, which promotes the essential role of plants in creating vibrant urban areas in which people and businesses can thrive.

Since 1960, AIPH has been the approving body of Horticultural Expos: major international events lasting up to six months and covering park areas from 25 to 500 hectares. These Expos create gardens, pavilions, events, and attractions that delight millions of visitors.

Their mission is to reignite and uphold an appreciation of flowers, plants, trees, and shrubs. They publish FloraCulture International and partner with green industry events like LANDSCAPE –The Industry Trade Show.

Dear Designer,

Is there a professional problem that’s keeping you awake at night?

Or perhaps a recurring thought when you wake up each morning?

I know that might seem like an oddly familiar or invasive question to ask since we don’t know each other…

(unless we’ve already met, in which case, Hello again!)

…and of course, I don’t mean to offend, but I do believe there’s nothing but good to come from acknowledging, sharing, and working on your problems with a willing supporter.

And as odd as it may seem to read this in a

magazine, I’m here to offer you that support.

I’m not a counsellor, but I’ve had my fair share of professional challenges (as a former Landscape Designer) and helped fellow designers overcome many more design problems in my role as a product & solution provider at Straightcurve.

So, if you’re dealing with a design conundrum of some sort or if anything I’ve said here has given you pause for thought - maybe this is the universe giving you a nudge.

To follow up on this nudge (and share your challenge) you can call me (07831 885 578), ping me an email (Dan@straightcurve.uk), or come and visit me on Stand G23.

It may just lead to something unexpectedly brilliant. All the best - Dan Depiazzi, GM Straightcurve UK.

LANDSCAPE – The Industry Trade Show is a key event in the year for The Association of Professional Landscapers. (APL)

They really look forward to being there. It provides The APL with a great opportunity to see existing members, but also promote ourselves to potential new members that may wish to benefit from being part of The APL community. It also gives them another chance to host their now regular slot “Landscapers Question Time”.

For those who are not aware, The APL is a subgroup within the parent company The Horticultural Trades Association. (HTA).

The APL comprises of accredited landscape companies who design, build and maintain gardens throughout the UK. Along with their initial inspection, each member is re-inspected regularly to ensure they hold up to date insurances, comply with all health and safety legislation and their quality of work is to the highest possible standard.

On top of that, The APL is a landscaping scheme operator of TrustMark, a Government endorsed initiative that promotes professional trades to consumers. They inspect The APL, so they can inspect you. So, if you want to benefit from what is in fact 3 memberships for the price of one, then come along for a chat at this year’s LANDSCAPE 2023 in Birmingham NEC.

We look forward to seeing you there.

URBIS SCHREDER

In 2017, Coventry Council announced a ten-year strategic plan to enable the city to become a culturally attractive, vibrant, and prosperous city for everyone who lives, works, and studies there. A 15-acre city centre regeneration plan was launched to transform the amenities for an improved social and cultural life. As part of this plan, the Bull Yard shopping precinct, a well-known and well-loved area of the city centre, was redeveloped with a fresh new design that focuses on nature.

This project is believed to be catalysed by the ‘UK City of Culture’ which happens every four years for a period of one calendar year, during which the successful bidder (city) hosts cultural festivities through culture-led regeneration for the year. Balfour Beatty, who was leading the project, commissioned Urbis Schréder to provide an original yet sustainable lighting solution for the Bull Yard area. It had to reflect the new focus on nature and encourage people, especially families, to spend more time enjoying the facilities once the sun sets.

They worked with Valmont Structures to design a beautiful, bespoke triple mast column to host the highly-efficient TECEO luminaire. Five single wooden

AND VALMONT STRUCTURES

poles with the TECEO were installed at the water park area and five triple columns in the heart of the Bull Yard. The low-energy TECEO LED luminaire delivers a gentle white light that creates a warm and welcoming night-time atmosphere, whilst the wooden masts have been specially treated to avoid rotting and corrosion and are easy to maintain.

This unique lighting structure is one of very few triple lighting columns in the world and is truly a work of art to admire. Local residents are delighted with the high-quality public space that not only provides an effective pedestrian thoroughfare but also a place to sit, play relax in a sustainable way.

Come visit them on their stand-G81 at LANDSCAPE 2023, at the NEC, to discuss how they can help YOU create spaces and places people love to live in.

The Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD) is pleased to partner with LANDSCAPE. Together, we are committed to moving the green industry forward.

MUSGROVE WILLOWS

Deep in the heart of rural Somerset, Musgrove Willows have been growing willow on their family-run farm for almost a century and the name Musgrove remains synonymous with natural, homegrown willow of the highest quality.

Due to the demand for their hand woven products, Musgrove Willows have recently expanded their on-site team. This included roles for two additional experienced weavers, a lining and finishing assistant and, to nurture the next generation of weavers, two apprentices.

This continued investment in people is just one part of Musgrove Willows’ pledge to becoming a sustainable, carbon-neutral business. They’re currently working with the GGFA and are progressing toward the Gold Achievement for making significant steps to reduce their environmental impact.

But most importantly, customers are passionate about their products: “Thank you for my panels, I love them! Please pass on my thanks to the weaver, I will definitely recommend Musgrove, I’m really impressed by the customer service and the panels. “ This is just one

example of the positive customer feedback on Musgrove Willows’ range of products which includes willow fence panels, living willow arbours and ‘fedges’.

NICOLA HOLDEN - BIID - BRITISH INSTITUTE OF INTERIOR DESIGN

Biophilic design is the buzz word of the moment, but what exactly is it?

Humans today are spending up to 90% of our lives indoors. Our urban landscape and growing addiction to screens are increasingly disconnecting us from the nature that used to be part of our everyday lives. Stress, anxiety and depression are very real, modern-day afflictions.

Biophilia refers to our innate biological connection to nature. It helps explain why forest bathing is such a powerful antidote to the pressures of the modern world; why a garden view can enhance our creativity and why shadows instil fascination and fear.

Scientific evidence shows that how we design our indoor spaces has a direct impact on us psychologically and physically, and therefore on our overall health, happiness and well-being. The use of biophilic design has been proven to reduce stress, enhance creativity and clarity of thought, improve our well-being and speed up healing.

@landscapeevent #Landscape2023 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK 32

One of the strongest aspects of biophilic design is to have a visual connection with nature, but it is important to consider touch, smell and sounds too. To flourish, we need a combination of complexity and order in our surroundings. Spaces that are engaging and information-rich.

Biophilic design needs to be considered during the planning stages of building or renovating our homes, not as an added afterthought once everything is complete. For our health and well-being, it is not a luxury but a necessity.

Nicola Holden will be sharing ideas and solutions on “Bringing the Outside In: How To Incorporate Biophilic Design into Your Interior Design Project” at LANDSCAPE – The Industry Trade Show.

Birmingham and Black Country Wildlife Trust and Warwickshire Wildlife Trust are proud to be in partnership with LANDSCAPE – The Industry Trade Show for the second year running.

The Wildlife Trusts are a group of 46 individual charities working for nature’s recovery across land and see around the UK with an ambition to see 30% of our landscape managed for the benefit of wildlife by 2030.

The UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries and the Wildlife Trusts are encouraging more people to take individual action to reverse this decline. Gardens and other outdoor spaces in our communities are an important resource as an opportunity to create habitat and corridors for wildlife to thrive.

This year’s garden design competition has a focus on urban and non-traditional garden spaces to encourage entrants to think more creatively about how outdoor spaces can support nature’s recovery.

JAMIE LANGLANDS

@landscapeevent #Landscape2023 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK 34

Inspired by the natural landscapes of Dorset where he grew up, Jamie studied Fine Art before moving into Horticulture, qualifying at Kingston Maurward College. For the past 15 years, he has created gardens for clients which are inspired by natural landscapes. Now working as lead designer for Oxford Garden Design, he has developed a style of designing beautiful gardens which are sensitive to the area in which they are built. Jamie enjoys using a range of recycled and eco-friendly materials, using ‘waste’ in a imaginative way, mixing both traditional and modern techniques using sustainable materials.

When it comes to plant selection for his gardens, he takes a naturalistic approach, combining natives and non-natives to attract pollinators and wildlife, whilst creating stunning gardens with longevity for his clients.

Having won a raft of medals for various show gardens since 2016, he triumphed this spring when he won his first RHS Gold, Best in Show, Best Construction and the Peoples’ Choice Award for his ‘The Wildlife Trusts: Wilder Spaces’ show garden created for BBOWT. The brief was to create

a wildlife friendly garden with improved biodiversity, encouraging people to take elements from the design to include in their own space. Jamie also wanted to create a wildlife garden which did not look wild.

With a genuine passion for what he is doing; Jamie’s aim is to continue creating sensitive naturalistic wildlife friendly, sustainable gardens for both private clients and at leading RHS Shows.

Jamie will be holding a “How To” seminar alongside Paul Hervey-Brookes at LANDSCAPE this year on Thursday 28th September. Register to attend for free and pick up some top tips on “How To: Create a Show Garden at RHS Malvern Spring Festival 2024”.

JOBLOGIC

The Rise of Technology in Landscaping Operations

Streamlining operations and improving efficiency are crucial for landscaping companies, and technology is playing a significant role in achieving these goals.

The use of service management software has revolutionised the way landscaping companies manage their tasks. With the increasing popularity of technology in various aspects of our lives, it’s no surprise that the landscaping industry is also benefiting from these advancements.

Service management software offers a range of features, including job scheduling, dispatching, compliance forms, and invoicing, all in one convenient platform. By adopting this technology, landscaping companies can streamline their processes, reduce errors, and boost productivity.

For example, one of the UK’s largest landscaping companies has successfully implemented Joblogic, a leading service management software provider. Providing customised reporting dashboards to ensure the safety of their workforce, perform compliance checks, and mitigate risks associated with equipment and machinery.

This collaboration demonstrates the effectiveness of service management software in enhancing landscaping operations. By incorporating the right software solution, landscaping companies can elevate their performance, deliver excellent customer service, and foster business growth.

If you’re interested in exploring these benefits, visit Joblogic’s team at LANDSCAPE 2023, stand E61 to learn more about their service management software.

ZOE WILSON

Having worked with stone for 15 years, Zoë Wilson has developed a recognisable style carving intricate geometric patterns into natural British stone. Her meticulous work is hand carved using traditional techniques. She has exhibited her wall pieces and sculptures in exhibitions and galleries nationally and internationally, including a recent solo exhibition in Japan.

After completing a degree in Fine Art painting, Zoë Wilson trained as a stone mason and letter carver before studying Historic Stone Carving at City and Guilds of London Art School. Zoë is a QEST scholar, Yeomen Mason, and a full member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen.

Zoë is currently working on the application of spherical geometry onto stone spheres. These highly original sculptures make a stunning focal point in modern or traditional settings and are suitable for both internal and external spaces. Zoë’s geometric wall carvings make beautiful feature walls, the work can be built into a design or fixed in place after. Zoë also sells limited edition Jesmonite casts of her carvings which can be hung together to create unique patterns.

@landscapeevent #Landscape2023 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK 38

Zoë is particularly interested in the interplay of sunlight and shadow on her geometric patterns which can create optical illusions and intriguingly change the viewers perception of the design. She welcomes commissions and enjoys making sculptural site-specific work, allowing nature to influence the design of the pattern.

Zoë will be delighted to meet you at LANDSCAPE 2023 to discuss your project.

Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) seem to be the buzz words across the built environment sector, but what does this look like for real-world people and for meaningful business success? How do employers understand how to do this work well, to have proper impact (without fear) and to achieve some of those all-important bottom-line impacts that everyone talks about? How do we reach, recruit and retain people from the underrepresented groups that our sector needs?

Building People is a hub for EDI in the Built Environment that brings together a network of organisations that work with under-represented groups to promote and amplify their voices. As well as operating at leadership level to provide support to the sector, they also help with guidance, insight and expertise to aid the creation of inclusive cultures, as well as signposting to the great resources, opportunities and training available and delivered by others across the sector.

The Landscape profession is one that recognises its need to progress in this area and Building People is here to help.

This year the European Landscape Contractors Association (ELCA) celebrates its 60th anniversary. At the beginning the idea was to build a network of national associations of landscape and gardening companies in order to exchange experiences and to promote the best interests of the green professionals at European level. The United Kingdom, represented by the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI), has always been an active ELCA-member.

Now 60 years later, ELCA has evolved to a widespread network. In total 22 national associations in countries of the European Union are member of ELCA. Canada, Japan, Switzerland and the United Kingdom are associated members. Together they have a strong voice. ELCA promotes the sector by emphasising on the benefits of greenery for better climate, biodiversity and health of people. ELCA also initiated the SoGreen Alliance (www.onthegreenmove.com), in which eight European associations of professionals in urban greening participate, to put greenery higher on the political and societal agenda.

Vocational training and sharing knowledge are also high on the actions list of ELCA. Green professionals and entrepreneurs meet each other at the Committee of Firms. Students and workers are offered the possibility for traineeship in other European countries by joining the exchange program that is coordinated by ELCA.

ELCA is proud about the strong relationship with BALI and wants to contribute to the further development and exchange of the green profession in the UK. ELCA has partnered with LANDSCAPE 2023 to offer an opportunity to exchange knowledge and network. Come and meet them on their stand in September.

Biodiversity and habitat solutions

Making outdoor spaces work hard for biodiversity and people is the sole purpose of the newly launched venture Niche.

The start-up founded by experienced biodiversity and sustainability professional Dominic Knower offers a range of products including bee posts, sand planters, habitat signs, and interpretation designs.

All of the current habitat products are designed to support specific groups of invertebrates with a focus on solitary bees, wasps, and other species associated with this food web. Niche applies a biomimicry-driven design process and a sound understanding of the target species’ ecology to create functional habitat solutions that help bring people closer to nature.

The flagship bee post product is a 2.4m British-grown Douglas Fir timber post, 120mm square, planed all-round and finished with clear natural oil.

A recent installation of 11 bee posts at the Manchester City

Football Club, Etihad Campus in May 2023 has seen numerous species of mason bee, leafcutter bee, yellow-face bee, and aphid hunting wasps all use the structures for nesting within 6 weeks of installation.

Niche also worked with both Manchester City and Liverpool Football Club to design and install biodiversity-focused interpretation boards. Information about planting schemes, habitats, and species to look out for was included to create platforms for nature-focused engagement with staff, visitors, and other audiences.

LANTRA

Lantra Supporting Career Development in the Sector

With UK unemployment at its lowest level since 1974, and businesses across many sectors desperately competing to attract the staff they need, leading land-based and environmental skills charity Lantra, has taken on the challenge to help attract new talent, and retain existing expertise in the sector, with the launch of its NEW website.

Lantra wound down the provision of a careers information service back in 2014, when Government funding was cut, but now nine years on, it’s using its own cash flow to re-establish its position as a trusted source for career information across a wide range of land-based industries.

The new website, with its extensive careers content, is just the first in a series of focused activities. Two full-time members of staff who are passionate about showcasing the exciting opportunities the sector has to offer have been appointed to drive the careers agenda forward.

When Lantra first embarked upon exploring this new website feature, it soon became clear from a wide range of

@landscapeevent #Landscape2023 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK 54

stakeholders that careers information was thought too hard to find and difficult to understand.

The new website keeps it simple and aims to help visitors navigate easily by answering three key questions…

What jobs could I do, and what do they involve?

What training, qualifications, and experience will I need?

Where can I get the training and qualifications I need?

These questions are just as relevant to people already in the workforce and wanting to progress their careers, as they are for new entrants. The new website gives details of more than 250 job roles across 12 industries and includes a selection of videos and case studies of real people, explaining what each job involves, how they got into their current role and why they love it.

Join Lantra at LANDSCAPE 2023 where David Fisher & Marcus Potter will be hosting a seminar session on Thursday 28th September on “The Importance of Training and Education for the Landscape Businesses”.

Good things happen when people connect to nature. Spending time in nature makes us feel happier and live longer, but did you know it can also help tackle climate change?

Hubbub’s workshop at LANDSCAPE 2023 will explore how we can use nature to help nudge people towards more sustainable choices. They will share various behaviour change techniques and approaches to inspire people to live more sustainably and how these can be applied to various industries, projects and topics.

This workshop will cover:

- Behaviour change techniques and what these look like in practice

- How do we talk about nature – what language works?

- Using engaging hooks and creative approaches to build a movement of people taking climate action

Hubbub is an award-winning charity that inspires ways of living that are good for the environment. Their aim is to revolutionise communications with the public about environmental issues, using everyday language and good design to make environmental actions desirable and tapping into things people are passionate about such as food, fashion, homes and neighbourhoods.

THE LAWN ASSOCIATION

Real lawns are back in business! And thanks to The Lawn Association’s partnership with LANDSCAPE 2023, designers, architects and constructors can learn more about the enormous benefits lawns bring to garden landscaping, wildlife – and people!

David Hedges-Gower, the UK’s leading lawn expert and advisor to national heritage organisations, created The Lawn Association to help people better understand the value of living lawns and to distinguish between truly sustainable lawn care and the ‘sustainable claims’ used in aggressive marketing.

“True sustainability simply means using only natural methods and applications to maintain a fantastic heathy lawn – native grasses that will last, conditioning the soil from the outset, and organic feeds designed to keep those soils in top health. And by designing and constructing it correctly from the start, a sustainable lawn will deliver fantastic value year on year.”

Promoting better education and easier access to the best tools, equipment and organic fertilisers is just part of the Association’s work. Helping designers, landscapers and architects to incorporate living lawns into their work is the other. There’s never been a better time and better help to include fantastic British lawns in today’s designs.

BRITISH WILDFLOWER PLANTS

When Linda Laxton started British Wildflower Plants in 1986, she didn’t anticipate still being here almost 40 years later. Back in the beginning, one of the first major projects was growing the wild flowers (considered weeds by judges) for a garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show. It won a Gold!

Many gardens and shows later, they are still providing plants for winning show gardens and have recently supplied the wild flowers for Paul Stone’s gold medal winning garden at Gardener’s World Live. “A Garden Fit For A King”.

Recently wild gardens, green roofs and the restoration of habitats have all become not just fashionable, but essential if we are to save our small patch of planet Earth. Thankfully many councils and companies are working towards a greener environment and British Wildflowr Plants have also supplied plants to green roofs in London in the last month. Many of their wild flowers have found their way to Greenwich Millennium Village project, and projects in Tower Hamlets, thus helping to reduce carbon in our capital city.

DARRYL MOORECITYSCAPES

Last year, landscape designers Cityscapes worked with the homelessness charity St Mungo’s to create a pocket park show garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, sponsored by Project Giving Back. The garden celebrated the work of St Mungo’s Putting Down Roots project, which uses horticulture to help people recover from homelessness, as well as Cityscapes’ sustainable approach to urban design, and 10 years of Cityscapes and Putting Down Roots working collaboratively to transform lives, communities and places.

Reconfigured by Cityscapes Director Darryl Moore, some of the planters and plants have been relocated to King’s College London’s on the Guy’s Hospital Campus, while the rest of the show garden has found a home beside the river Thames in London Bridge City as a permanent public pocket park, which was officially opened by the Mayor of Southwark in May.

Designed to bring people and plants together in an accessible and inclusive space, the pocket park is a permanent reminder of the importance of green spaces to our health and wellbeing, and a haven for urban biodiversity.

@landscapeevent #Landscape2023 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK 64

Cityscapes’ creative approach to materials, promoting more sustainable ways of making parks and gardens, is showcased in the reclaimed wood, reused paving and low-carbon concrete employed in the design. Textural foliage provides contrast with the vibrant colours in the pavilion, planters, fencing and paving. The planting design creates an ecological plant community using a matrix with layers of different heights, with plants selected for the shady conditions, creating a tranquil woodland-type setting beside the busy riverside pathway.

Join Darryl Moore on the first day of LANDSCAPE 2023 where he will be holding a CPD accreddited session as part of the SGD – Society of Garden Designers theatre. Darryl will be talking on “Shaping Urban Spaces - Plants, People and Other Species”. Register to attend the show and all seminar sessions.

DAVIS WHITE LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS

@landscapeevent #Landscape2023 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK 66

Artist Banksy lends his support to Davies White Landscape Architects to help create a new NHS Staff Garden.

In 2020 a piece of Banksy artwork paying tribute to NHS workers turned up at University Hospital Southampton. The painting depicting a young child playing with a superhero nurse doll was sold at auction and raised more than £16m in 2021. A sum of the money raised was allocated for the creation of a nature inspired NHS Staff and Wellbeing Hub building and garden at the hospital.

Banksy left the artwork in the hospital entrance with nothing more than a note for hospital workers, saying: “Thanks for all you’re doing. I hope this brightens the place up a bit, even if it’s only black and white.”

In 2022 RHS Gold Medal award winning landscape architects Davies White Ltd were invited to engage with NHS staff and Banksy’s team at his Pest Control Office to design and manage the build of the garden by SRC Ltd. The hub building was designed by Laura Gerada from Williams Architects and constructed by Integra Buildings.

At the opening event Davies White Ltd landscape architects Andrée Davies and Adam White said: “the new building and garden work in harmony together and offer the perfect place for staff to stop, reflect and recharge. Nature can generate many positive emotions, such as calmness, joy, and creativity whilst facilitating concentration. The garden is designed to allow staff to get their very own nature fix during their busy days. We are grateful to the NHS and of course Banksy for inviting us to be part of this very special project”.

Join Adam White and others from Landscape Institute on the first day of LANDSCAPE 2023 where they will be hosting a free CPD seminar session looking at “Skills for Greener Places”. The panel will be delving into the critical theme of industry skills and addressing the skills shortages in our profession.

GREENFIX

In late 2020 Greenfix’s Technical Team was contacted by Landscape Architects at Page Wagner Associates Ltd for an upcoming project in Longbridge, Birmingham.

The project included the diversion of a section of the River Rea due to a new multi-use development in the area however, as this section of the river is subject to high flows, careful consideration was needed to ensure a suitable product was selected.

After working closely with the Landscape Architects throughout the planning stages it was established that along the waterline, where the higher flow rates were an issue, the heavy-duty Embankment Mat 700S would be used. Further up the embankment where there is the potential for flooding, the lighter duty Embankment Mat 400S was added to the design.

Both products are 100% biodegradable and incorporate a total ground cover coir blanket which is stitched between two coir mesh layers for added durability. The blankets were supplied pre-seeded with a wildflower mix as specified in the design to promote biodiversity at the site and boost the surrounding ecosystem.

Greenfix representatives met with contractors, ACS, for a pre-start meeting to provide installation guidance and advice prior to the blankets use. Follow up progress meetings were also conducted where Greenfix’s expert team was able to provide continued advice surrounding river restoration and best practices.

Talk to the Greenfix team at LANDSCAPE 2023 where they will be available to discuss what they offer and how they can help with your future projects.

RHS - ROYAL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

Boosting access to horticultural training at the RHS: Work experience and taster days at RHS gardens

A new programme of RHS training and work experience initiatives is aiming to tackle a skills shortage and increase diversity within the horticultural industry. The nationwide project, called New Shoots, launched earlier this year during National Careers Week.

Since then, pilot programmes have been developed at RHS Garden Bridgewater and RHS Garden Wisley which will be rolled out at all RHS gardens from 2024. Taster days for a glimpse into horticultural careers and more opportunities to gain work experience or to volunteer for young people have been trialled, and future plans include hosting industry placements for those taking the new T-level qualification in Production, Agriculture and Land Management, as well as developing new areas in the gardens for hands-on learning. “At Wisley, we’re linking up with Surrey County Council’s project to get more people into green volunteering, and at Bridgewater, we’re working closely with Salford colleges and other education providers to deliver quality work experience,” says Horticultural Engagement Manager Lisa Peter.

@landscapeevent #Landscape2023 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK 78

“Key groups we want to engage include young people, people living with a disability, people from the LGBTQ+ community, from minority ethnic backgrounds, and from lower socio-economic backgrounds.”

For updates see rhs.org.uk/newshoots or register for LANDSCAPE 2023 where Lisa will be running a “How To” seminar on “How the RHS New Shoots Initiative is Opening Up Careers Opportunities for People From Currently Under-Represented Audiences”.

SOILWATER

Carbon Savings in Landscapes and Gardens!

Sustainability is a tag line today and it is being pushed forward as Net-Zero targets to businesses and the public by the UK government based on COP 26, the world meeting where 192 countries agreed to try and mitigate Global warming effects using a new framework of Environment Social Governance (ESG).

SoilWater Ltd., has participated at legislative level of standards and protocols, involved with UN agencies. Using what’s called a circular-economy model of Bio-diversity Innovation, this means, any new product needs to be available for everyone, in their case, from Farmer to Gardener, and it must be 100% biodegradable and long lasting. Now SoilWater Improver (just for soil) is helping all garden soils, pots, and planters.

As founder and CEO, Christian Murray has worked in his own garden and shown that Christmas trees that are usually sent to recycling are now able to be transplanted easily into very rough, UK building rubble soils and take excellent growth. Now people can start planting their little house trees easily and not have to worry about them as

@landscapeevent #Landscape2023 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK 80

they increase growth and contribute to the carbon savings worldwide.

As a single person we do a little but if a million of us plant a tree in our back yard this can offer significant impact on UK Carbon Capture net zero targets.

This is the first-time landscapers and home gardeners can now use a commercial new sustainability innovation product to start saving water, compost, fertilisers and store more Carbon in their soils with a single treatment that lasts multiple years!

EVENT CYCLE

Embedding Social Impact: A Sustainable Floral Journey at the ITM Conference

The 2023 ITM Conference in Brighton embraced sustainability as a core theme, integrating social strategies and charitable donations into their project plan from the start. Event Cycle played a vital role in finding innovative solutions for their procurement needs, ensuring a positive impact throughout the event.

One notable initiative was the creation of purposeful table centrepieces, reflecting ITM’s commitment to sustainability. Collaborating with Event Cycle, ITM partnered with Hearts & Flowers, an organisation specialising in low-impact, locally grown, and vegan flowers. A workshop during the conference engaged attendees in crafting their own centrepieces, and learning about organic flower cultivation and sustainability.

The centrepieces then found a second life after the conference at The Pines Care and Nursing Home in Hove, just a short distance away. Event Cycle facilitated the donation, ensuring the flowers continued to bring joy to residents. The accompanying vases were reused,

@landscapeevent #Landscape2023 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK 82

minimising waste and the care home even organised a flower arranging session for its residents, extending the impact further.

To reduce waste, the conference badges were shredded and recycled, while the lanyards were responsibly recycled through TerraCycle. The backdrops used during the conference were repurposed into concept furniture. These versatile pieces offered new shapes and surfaces, blending the ITM Conference material with other reclaimed fabrics.

ITM’s sustainability journey, guided by Event Cycle, showcased the power of integrating social impact into event planning. By supporting local communities, minimising waste, and extending the life of event materials, ITM demonstrated their commitment to a sustainable future. This approach left a positive imprint on attendees and the wider community.

To embark on your own repurposign and sustainability journey, talk to the Eevnt Cycle team on their stand at LANDSCAPE 2023.

SALIX

FloraFloat is the first plastic free floating wetland island, utilising recycled glass to create specially formulated foam glass gravel, which provides buoyancy to the islands as well as providing an ideal growing media for wetland flora. Aided by coir matting, a biodegradable material derived from coconut husk and held together with a durable steel mesh. Able to be planted from a vast range of native wetland species grown in Salix’s Wetland nursery, the roots and rhizomes of the plants grow through and extrude from the floating island systems hanging in the water column and delivering multiple water quality benefits.

Creating a versatile system that opens up the ability to install these valuable ecosystems without contributing to the ongoing micro-plastic crisis is essential to a sustainable future. The recycled glass foam stones are filled with pores increasing the surface area and providing space for microbes, the trailing root systems filter fine suspended particles whilst also providing safe refuge for aquatic organisms. The plants in symbiosis with microorganisms provide nutrient uptake and adsorption

of contaminants actively improving water quality. The ecological benefits result from an increase to local biodiversity and habitat creation, making FloraFloat the perfect, low cost application for urban environments, where traditional methods to create wetland habitat can be difficult, enhancing an otherwise harsh aesthetic setting. Picking a specific mix of wetland species from our nursery to address different requirements means a single solution that can address an array of dilemmas with uniquely advantageous design.

LONDON COLLEGE OF GARDEN DESIGN

London College of Garden Design is very well represented at the UK’s garden shows this year. With 8 medal winners at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in May their Graduates accounted for almost a quarter of all the show gardens with stunning displays both in the main show gardens, Balcony gardens and ‘All about plants’ categories. Moving on to July Caroline Clayton of Viriditas Garden Design has created a garden for laSWAP Six Form Schools at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Festival and RHS Tatton Park will see two gardens from Conal McGuire and Amy Gunning.

Director of Garden Design Studies Andrew Wilson (who was also exhibiting at Chelsea this year) said “Show gardens are a good way of promoting the work that you can do and often give you an opportunity to do something more creative than day to day clients. Many of our Graduates have got experience of helping out with show gardens and want to try it for themselves. You might get the bug!”

@landscapeevent #Landscape2023 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK 86

RACHEL BAILEY - RACHEL BAILEY GARDEN DESIGN LTD

Rachel runs an award-winning design practice in Scotland that aims to create plant-filled gardens, which are good for people and wildlife, and that aims to have a low environmental impact.

Their approach to a design and build is holistic. They consider the connection of the garden with surrounding and nearby habitat types to allow connectivity and movement of species within and across the landscape. Of course, the garden is carefully designed for the clients to enjoy the space and the nature that uses the site all whilst minimising the ecological and carbon footprint of the build.

One of the projects they are currently working on is a community garden to the south of Glasgow. They are carving out spaces for people within an already beautiful brownfield site. As the surface substrate is contaminated with Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and lead and has areas of asbestos, they are collaborating with a soil remediation company to ensure the site can be built and used safely and to use plants to help with longer term phyto (and bio)-remediation where they can.

@landscapeevent #Landscape2023 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK 88

As the site will be used by the community to grow edible plants, these activities will be limited to specific areas in which the underlying substrate will be separated from the growing medium.

They will be creating additional habitats for wildlife: varying topography and substrate, ‘dead’ wood posts and a large pond, which will connect with the nearby nature reserve.

Join Rachel on the 27th September at LANDSCAPE 2023 where she will be running a CPD seminar session as part of the SGD – Society of Garden Designers theatre. Rachel will be looking at “Sustainable Garden Design: How Designing in Biodiversity can Decrease the Carbon Footprint of a Garden. Register to attend the show and seminars for free.

ELMTEC

John Wood is a garden designer, CPD tutor for the SGD - Society of Garden Designers and regular contributor of articles and features on CAD, 3D modelling and rendering in landscape and garden design.

ELMTEC asked John to explain the process of his design work: “Plants are drawn first in Procreate and then dropped into SketchUp in png format to become Sketchup Face-me components. These can then be saved to your SketchUp component library and shared amongst the design community via the 3D Warehouse.”

So, the quality of the final visualisation can be vastly improved. In horticultural and botanical terms. By feeding work done in Procreate directly into the SketchUp model or adding these drawings to one’s final presentation images at the postproduction stage.

ELMTEC will be exhibiting the software on their stand at LANDSCAPE – The Industry Trade Show at the NEC in September. Register to attend for free and meet the team.

THE GARDENERS GUILD

The Gardeners Guild (TGG) is a national trade network for qualified gardeners. For over 17 years, TGG has maintained an independent register of certified gardeners to identify them as professional maintenance contractors and consultants.

TGG members must hold at least one government endorsed horticultural qualification equal to Ofqual level 2 certificate or higher and are required to abide by the terms of membership. H M GARDENS

Wild flower edge.

The team at H M Gardens have been looking after these gardens in Crystal Palace for several years. The steep bank was always neat but rough looking due to strimming. Four years ago, they decided to let the grass grow which made an improvement to see growth as well as adding softness and textures.

Wildflowers Leucanthemum vulgare and Contidor hispidus appeared and two years ago the team added some bulbsfritillaria meleagris alba. Yellow rattle was introduced last year and that is really romping through the areas. They have plans to sow more varieties of flowers including poppy seeds this Autumn and even more in the Spring.

It was the best it looked this summer. They will have to weed to reduce some domineering plants and weeds and also reduce grass seeding each year, even hedgtrimming larger patches. They do cut back swaths of grass seed. With the yellow rattle there will be space for more flowers. They cut down in the Autumn time and clear soon after to allow last dispersion of seed.

@landscapeevent #Landscape2023 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK 96

A trick to dealing with an urban area is to have the softness of the wildflower area contained to a specific space so that the lawn and other areas look neat. It creates a nice contrast and looks cared for. Residents do, at times, sit on the lawn and children may play so they are keen to avoid any hidden surprises that you may have in very long grass.

The Association of Professional Landscapers will be representing the association as well as all of the APL Award Winners at LANDSCAPE this year. Register to attend the show and check out all the winners and their projects.

THE PLANT HEALTH ALLIANCE

The Plant Health Alliance and the Plant Healthy Certification Scheme

The Plant Health Alliance is a cross-sectoral group of organisations spanning ornamental horticulture, forestry and general land management, it includes trade associations, environmental NGOs and government agencies. The Alliance was established in response to the concern that there are an increasing number of new and damaging plants pests and diseases threatening the health of our plants - the very plants that we rely upon for our cultivated, ornamental and natural landscapes.

The purpose of the Alliance is to promote and enhance plant health and biosecurity measures to protect plant species and associated ecosystems in the United Kingdom and beyond. In early 2019, to achieve this purpose, the Alliance published the Plant Health Management Standard which set out the technical requirements for the Plant Healthy Certification Scheme. The Alliance are the Governing Body of the Scheme and oversee its development.

They have gladly partnered with LANDSCAPE – The Industry Trade Show as the Alliance aims to work with all plantspeople to support them to grow, nurture and protect the plants that we rely on for our livelihoods and that all people enjoy as part of our everyday lives.

JOHNSONS WELLFIELD

Johnsons Wellfield were thrilled with the success of The London Square Community Garden at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower show.

Every detail in the garden was meticulously considered, resulting in a harmonious and tranquil space. The plant selection was artfully composed, exhibiting a variety of colours, textures, and scents. The incorporation of the Crosland Hill Yorkstone as large slabs, steppingstones and gravel created a natural blending between the hard and soft landscape, highlighting extraordinary attention to detail.

The garden, expertly installed by The Landscaping Consultants, was designed by James Smith Landscape & Garden Design was presented with a Gold Medal by TV presenter Nikki Chapman.

James has a long history using Crosland Hill Yorkstone. Of the stone James said “it is a high-quality material from a sustainable source and the warm tone works well with the planting.”

@landscapeevent #Landscape2023 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK 100

A highlight was a visit to the garden by King Charles and Queen Camilla, who took a keen interest in the garden’s inspiration and design. Their presence added a regal touch and further validated the garden’s creativity.

James said: “Winning a Gold Medal at Chelsea has been the most amazing accolade. Our sponsor London Square and the entire team are thrilled. It has been truly collaborative process from start to finish, and meeting the King and Queen made it even more special. They were especially interested in the power of a community garden to bring people together, and the inspiration taken from the Doddington & Rollo roof garden in Battersea.”

Johnsons Wellfield will be at LANDSCAPE later this year in September displaying their range of stone and paving products.

EVEREDGE

Keeping it Contemporary with Cor-Ten

If your plot needs a pick-me-up, then it’s time to try out EverEdge’s garden edging – lasting a lifetime! There are lots of styles to choose from, so you can find one that fits your theme. In a modern space, you might be looking for clean, sharp lines to frame your flower beds. But, if you like a traditional look, then a curved edge or design might be preferable.

As well as elevating the look of your garden, edging is practical, too! It defines the different zones in your plot while keeping your soil, gravel, bark chippings, and grass all in their area. Although it’s often a smaller detail for a garden, it goes without saying that edging has an important role to play in landscaping.

This featured project looks at a customer who ordered Cor-Ten Titan, custom planters with a custom bench. Cor-Ten steel is in vogue right now, and for good reason. It brings an industrial aesthetic to a space and its warm-toned patina injects an eye-catching boost of colour that offsets greenery beautifully.

@landscapeevent #Landscape2023 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK 102

This metal garden edging is also super durable – the rusted coating that develops is corrosion-resistant, protecting the material beneath. A stunning project designed by Toby Jones.

See for yourself at LANDSCAPE 2023, where EverEdge will be displaying a sample from their range.

Women In Natural Stone (WINS) has been established to provide networking and support for women in the stone industry and wider architectural and construction sectors. As well as supporting those within the industry, the group also aims to encourage the next generation of women into construction, and as numbers grow, WINS will be able to establish a system of mentoring.

They’re delighted to be exhibiting at LANDSCAPE – The Industry Trade Show again and are looking forward to being part of the ‘Women in the Industry’ day at the event. They look forward to connecting with landscape designers, architects and natural stone companies and spreading the word on the networking and support opportunities that WINS offers.

There are so many fantastic women within our industry, and they can’t wait to meet you all!

EMPREINTE SIGNS

Introducing Saint-Étienne’s Dazzling Trail: A Sustainable Solution with Enamelled Lava

In a collaboration between the Saint-Étienne Town Hall and Empreinte Signs, a remarkable project has been born. The town hall approached them with a pressing issue: the premature fading of their ground-painted signage trail. Seeking a sustainable alternative with vibrant visuals, they embarked on a quest to find the perfect solution.

Enter enamelled lava, the natural remedy to the problem.

Enamelled lava can be seamlessly incorporated into the ground. Unlike conventional brass or bronze staking nails, this innovative approach offers boundless possibilities for pattern variations and allows for the use of any desired colour. Moreover, lava is available in numerous shapes and sizes, providing even more creative freedom.

Once integrated into the floor, enamelled lava retains its exceptional durability. The trail will exhibit enduring brilliance, as the vivid colours will remain vibrant over time. It is weather-resistant, unfazed by the elements, ensuring the trail’s longevity. Keeping the trail in impeccable condition is a breeze, as it can be easily washed, allowing for simple maintenance routines.

But that’s not all. Lava is not only an excellent choice for its durability and aesthetics; it is also an environmentally responsible option. Sourced from the Volvic quarries, the lava undergoes an enamelling process in their workshops located in the Toulouse region. Not only does it emit zero pollutants, but it is also fully recyclable, aligning perfectly with their commitment to sustainability.

Visitors to the ExploraParc will be enchanted by the revitalised trail, adorned with 29 exquisite coloured slabs. The journey through evolution will regain its vibrant hues, inviting guests to immerse themselves in the captivating ambiance for many years to come.

By harnessing the potential of enamelled lava, a sustainable and visually striking trail has been created. The project stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in overcoming challenges and enhancing the allure of public spaces.

See a sample of their work on their stand at LANDSCAPE 2023 in September.
