E URO PLANT E RS 80 Charlotte Street is a major mixed-use development in the heart of London’s Fitzrovia redeveloped by Overbury Plc. This regenerated building occupies an urban block with the adjacent Asta House, delivering over 320,000ft2 of workspace, 55 new apartments, a café, a restaurant and the new Poets Park on Chitty Street. The main block was originally built in the 1960’s as the Post Office headquarters with the new building now three floors higher than the original. This takes the building from 7 to 10 storeys high and now links the floors to make one building, now 90m square. The architecture imaginatively combines the existing fabric of the building with new-build elements and is characterised by the various facade treatments and terraces. The new levels are set back to reduce the size, providing the terraces with unrivalled views over Fitzrovia, the nearby BT Tower, and out towards the City and the river.

A 45L Eucalyptus pauciflora niphophila ‘Mount Bogong’

HA R DY E U C A L YP TU S BY GR AF T O N N U R S ER Y

Hardy Eucalyptus put on a bit of weight during the pandemic… they’re now 6,000 sq.ft bigger! We all know it; that nagging sensation that you’re being watched. Whether working from home, playing with children or actively gardening, seeking sanctuary or engaging with nature, there is no doubt over heightened awareness of potentially being observed by neighbours. Seeking privacy resulted in a high demand for fast-growing, evergreen, screening trees. At Hardy Eucalyptus they saw a surge in the purchase of dwarf Eucalyptus during 2020 and again in 2021, doubling their organic online sales. Eucalyptus archeri and Eucalyptus neglecta ‘Dargo Plains’ are particularly popular as they can be maintained, with a little annual pruning, anywhere between 3m and 5m tall. An unpredicted side-effect of the Covid pandemic has been the uptake in outdoor

living. Hardy Eucalyptus’s professional landscape and nursery clients have noticed the same trend; people want to spend more time in the privacy of their own garden all year round, without the nagging feeling of being overlooked! Increasingly they are supplying landscape architects, garden designers and trade nurseries with specimen dwarf evergreen trees for instant impact. Rising to the challenge, they dramatically increased production numbers of 10 species of Eucalyptus, all hardy for the UK and ideal for the smaller garden. Several species in the screening-tree collection are happy to grow on wet clay soils. November 2021 saw the completion of a new 6,000 sq. ft. greenhouse designed specifically to grow Eucalyptus trees under optimum conditions, and it is already full to the brim with new trees just waiting to be planted! Meet the team on their stand at LANDSCAPE on the 28th & 29th September at the NEC.

ADTR A K

Nottingham digital marketing agency, Adtrak, beat tough competition to win the prestigious Supplier & Service Provider award at the Pro Landscaper Business Awards 2022. Held in London in April, the awards celebrate the excellent standard in the landscaping industry. Reflecting all the different aspects of the UK landscaping sector, the awards received an influx of entries across the board for all fifteen categories. Adtrak was one of five companies that made the coveted Supplier & Service Provider Quality shortlist. The panel of judges considered key points such as offering, relationships and staff retention when choosing their winner, as well as value for money and impeccable reputation within the industry. Ben Shaw, Adtrak Account Manager, and the Adtrak team were presented with the award by television presenter, Michaela Strachan at the event at East Wintergarden, Canary Wharf.

Following the accolade, Ben Shaw said: “Over the last six or seven years we have built up a fantastic reputation within the landscaping sector and this award showcases our established status in this industry for digital marketing.” “Our people have worked tirelessly to build important relationships and networks up and down the country. I’d like to say a big thanks to the entire Adtrak team and to those who have been involved in the landscaping projects that have helped us land this prestigious award.” This year, Adtrak are celebrating their 25th Anniversary and are going from strength to strength, with this award win coming off the back of last year’s inclusion in The Drum’s top UK digital agencies in 2021. MOA SU RE

Moasure announces new updates to its revolutionary measuring technology. Moasure’s revolutionary measuring device is transforming the landscaping industry with its ability to measure complex and irregular spaces, simply by moving from one point to another, whilst simultaneously drawing an on-screen diagram through its companion smartphone app. The Warwickshire-based company unveiled a major update to their technology late last year that’s making waves in the industry thanks to its ability to measure spaces, both complex and simple – calculating area, perimeter and elevation in the time it takes to walk around. The latest update to Moasure’s measuring technology now allows landscaping professionals to automatically record elevations across an entire space – and through the intuitive companion app, view the change in elevation between points captured throughout the measurement.

In addition to Moasure’s latest technology update, the team recently announced that users are no longer required to pay a subscription fee to export their Moasure measurements to PDF or to design software such as AutoCAD, Vectorworks or SketchUp. For both new and existing customers, it’s now free to export 3-dimensional measurements captured by Moasure. Moasure’s team continues to collect feedback and requests from its customers and is speedily working on a host of updates and features that’ll be released throughout the year. Moasure invites existing customers and visitors alike to visit their stand at LANDSCAPE to demonstrate all of the latest features and capabilities.

The Women In Lighting Project started in 2019 on International Women’s Day by Light Collective, and is supported by Archifos and formalighting. The object of the project was to create an inspirational digital platform that profiled women working in the field of lighting and lighting design, narrating their career path and goals and celebrating their work with the added aims to help encourage, support and inspire the next generation.

Paula Warman founder of The Landscaper’s Circle and co-owner of multi award-winning garden design and build company Aura Landscapes Ltd will be speaking at The LANDSCAPE Show on September 29th celebrating Women in Landscaping.

The project is supported by individual ambassadors in 75+ different countries with events and activities all over the world, a huge network of connections and a supportive community to join. It is open to all women working in lighting, covering all fields such as architecture, art, entertainment, manufacturing, education, research and journalism.

The Landscaper’s Circle was created to exclusively support, train and coach landscapers, garden designers and horticultural business owners. It was set up to bridge the gap between being a landscaper and running a landscaping business. Having run her own landscaping and design business for over 12 years and winning 33 awards including a recent Silver Gilt at BBC Gardener’s World Spring, it has been a journey that others can learn from and be inspired. This was the reason The Landscaper’s Circle was launched, “I know there is no shortage of skilled, creative and passionate landscapers and garden designers. However, I do see a gap between being both a landscaper AND a business owner that needs bridging” she says. A vital part of The Landscaper’s Circle is supporting and coaching fellow industry business owners and 2 years ago Paula launched her Limitless Landscapers Podcast to share advice and interview inspirational guests. The podcast is available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts check out the latest podcast featuring Bryan Clayton who sold his landscaping business for $10 million! Paula will be speaking on 29th September all about women in landscaping, her own experiences and how The Landscaper’s Circle can help business owners in the landscaping industry grow and develop their businesses. TLC is the only online membership exclusively for garden designers, landscapers and horticultural businesses.

Women in Lighting have partnered with The LANDSCAPE Show to ensure that lighting design and particularly female designers are profiled to as wide an audience as possible.

Waves of seasonal plants and bulbs provide interest throughout the year through the three different levels of the amphitheatre, whilst woodland & shade-loving plants provide a textured under planting at the back of the space. A simple but elegant stone water feature to one side of the garden reflects the tiers of the theatre and frames a magnificent sculpture of a pouncing leopard as well as providing the relaxing sound of water trickling gently down each level. D A V ID S T EV EN S I N T ER N A T IO N A L For the past five years David Stevens has been working on a beautiful garden that rests peacefully in the Mendip Hills south of Bristol. But it was not an easy site to work on with the old farmhouse surrounded by higher ground that hemmed it in on two sides. Added to this there were huge and uncompromising areas of block paving that had provided vehicle access to adjacent buildings. On a positive note the setting was stunning with long views out to the landscape and woods that surrounded the house, what an opportunity! Initially they needed to excavate the higher ground to allow room for terraces that led out from doors that could be thrown open from the living spaces inside. This involved designing substantial retaining walls, steps and paths all of which would be softened by planting that tumbled down terraces, weaving flower, foliage and fragrance into the overall composition.

Block paving was ripped out, crushed and recycled for foundations. The paving was beautiful local stone eliminating haulage over long distances and far more environmentally friendly than many modern surfaces. Old outbuildings were removed and mown paths swept through

With the need for more, bigger and better housing our precious eco habitat is constantly under threat. A living roof is an ideal solution to this as it replaces this habitat by simply moving it up. With the right depth and type of substrate, appropriate drainage and thoughtful planting it is possible to create a beautiful, bio-diverse and sustainable environment on any roof. One of Oxford Green Roof’s living roofs was built in the heart of the South Oxfordshire countryside. A new bungalow with views of grazing farmland, it was important that the building blended in with its surroundings and a wildflower meadow created the perfect disguise. Equally importantly it re-created the wildlife habitat initially lost to the

G A RD E N S Our post-pandemic gardens are being asked to work harder for us than ever. They are being tasked to not only grow plants, but also to provide an outdoor extension to our homes where we can relax, exercise, entertain and eat. Kate Gould’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show Sanctuary Garden, ‘Out of the Shadows’ is a lesson in how brilliant garden design can seamlessly incorporate modern lifestyle demands into a beautiful and inspirational garden space to be used year round. ‘Out of the Shadows’ features a state-of-the-art swim spa, spaces for seating and relaxation, climbing bars, and a yoga/meditation space all elegantly situated amongst dramatic and exotic, tropical-style planting. The combination of beautiful design and clever functionality extends across the garden, with a social space elegantly diliniated through carefully placed rock seats and a central fire pit, shower and exercise areas.

T O O L S Patented Wood Splitter Kindling Cracker™ Comes To The UK and will be exhibited at The LANDSCAPE Show for the first time at the NEC in September 2022. The team at Fandango Fire Tools are very excited because they’ve brought the Kindling Cracker™ to the UK. The Kindling Cracker™ is the patented, cast iron, Australian made wood splitter. Users love that it is safe and easy to use. It was invented by New Zealand schoolgirl Ayla almost 10 years ago and they’re very proud to help spread her story around Europe. Fandango started selling the Kindling Cracker in the UK in November 2021 and are delighted with the reception here. They’ve sold over 6,000 in the UK since they opened their Manchester warehouse. Customers seem to love their Kindling Crackers!

28

@landscapeevent #Landscape2022 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK

There has been an increase in homeowners looking to wood as a fuel source. Rising energy prices have seen more homeowners install log burners indoors. The outdoor living boom means more gardens have fire pits, pizza

ovens, wood fired hot tubs and grills. There are more applications for firewood in the UK home than ever before. In May 2021 the legislation around the moisture content of firewood that can be sold changed. Homeowners should be aware of the legislative changes. The sale of wet wood (where moisture content is over 20%) was banned. Fuel that isn’t dried is particularly bad for the environment. Burning dry wood is far less polluting. Less nasty particulate matter is released into the atmosphere. Oh, and it takes a lot of thermal energy to boil off the moisture in wood – energy that could be heating your home! The Kindling Cracker lets you prepare this wood at home. Safe. Easy. Smart.

‘With Love’ by Richard Miers for Perennial The epic task of building an RHS Chelsea Flower Show main avenue garden has begun. Joining the planting team on the final two days are four Perennial trainee gardeners from the charity’s Leeds and West Suffolk gardens, which open to the public to raise funds, alongside the Laskett in Herefordshire. The garden is packed with Richard Miers design hallmarks. It is structured, elegant, and classically contemporary, in a palette of green with soft white and plum undertones. Trees and shrubs include flat-topped hawthorns, multi-stemmed Persian ironwood, yew topiary and Portuguese laurel, with hornbeam hedging. There is also a central rill and paving and bespoke seating and sculptures. Carrying a ‘With Love’ message to the horticulture industry, the garden’s main avenue appearance is a first for both the 183-year old charity and the designer. They hope it will raise awareness of, and support for, the free information, advice and support Perennial provides people in horticulture and their families. The Perennial Garden ‘With Love’ echoes Richard’s belief that gardens are a gift of love between those who create

The Green Roof Organisation (GRO) formed as the UK’s official Trade association for green roofing in 2020. GRO develops guidance documents and promotes the adoption of these green roofs to a higher standard with demonstrable environmental benefits. We represent waterproofing manufacturers, suppliers of systems and components, contractors and installers and any associates involved in the delivery of green roofs. GRO is keen to build more connections with landscaping professionals, as the successful implementation of green roofs requires great communication between roofers and landscapers. Our updated GRO Code of Best practice provides an overall picture for any professional wanting to get involved in green roofing. GRO recognises the need to connect with the more domestic market, and The LANDSCAPE Show provides us with the perfect opportunity to connect and provide an insight into the experience we have gained so far, and find out what garden designers and creators really need from us.

G E O R GIA L I N D S A Y - G EO R G IA L IN DSAY G A RD E N D ES IG N This North London Family garden was completed in 2021 and went on to win an APL award for best construction in 2022. The judges said ‘It has been delivered to perfection’ it was a pleasure working closely with Nordland Landcapes to bring this garden to life. It was in desperate need of a drainage solution and required extensive ground works undertaken before the landscaping could start. Perforated pipes now traverse the garden, extracting excess water along with 25 tonnes of sand to aid drainage. The design incorporates four individual seating zones to light and shade. One comfortable lounge zone, a dining area, an intimate seating for 2 and a rear seating area connected to the garden room.

The monochrome pallet unifies the hard landscaping while the abundant planting softens the crisp lines. Geranium ‘Rozzane’ and Lysimachia nummularia tumble over the free standing planters. Hydrangia panicuylata ‘Lime Light’ form a soft haze around the parameter with bee friendly planting woven throughout.

The Arboricultural Association is the leading organisation in the UK for tree care professionals working in all areas of arboriculture. With more than 3000 members in the UK and around the world, it is recognised as an international and national leader in tree care. The Association is also a charity, inspiring the general public about the importance of amenity trees and the arboricultural professionals who care for them. Much of this work is done through participation at community events, political engagement and, most recently, via the Tree Care Supporter initiative and public-facing content. Membership and training are available to suit all arboricultural professionals, to whom the Association offers a wide range of services and benefits. A busy calendar of events includes the ARB Show, the Annual Amenity Conference – the main UK arboricultural conference of the year – and a packed online programme including an acclaimed webinar series enjoyed by viewers worldwide.

The lighting design transforms the garden at night. The charcoal fencing reseeds, illuminating the froth of planting and pin pointing key features including the Heptacodium miconioides central tree. The unusual honey coloured bark echos the Cedar battens which surround the main terrace. The two main seating areas are delineated with two-tone monochrome paving. Charcoal wood effect plank paving forms the central strip surrounded by a lighter porcelain. The same grey porcelain is used in the kitchen which flows seamlessly into the garden. A garden which started as a quagmire has been transformed into a harmonious retreat for all the family. Georgia will be hosting a seminar session at The LANDSCAPE Show on Wednesday the 28th of September. Register to visit and you can attend the session for free.

We very much value our relationship with The LANDSCAPE Show and see this event as an important forum for professionals across different sectors to come together, sharing knowledge and experience for the common good.

HERI T A G E Plant Heritage’s annual ‘Missing Genera’ campaign is being launched at RHS Chelsea Flower Show this May. Not all plant groups have someone to research, care for and conserve them. Every year Plant Heritage identifies different plant groups that aren’t currently part of a National Plant Collection®, and therefore could be at risk of being lost from our gardens. This year, there are 12 listed on the Missing Genera 2022, including Campanula (bellflowers) and Silene (campions). The horticultural conservation charity is calling for volunteers across the country with a passion for plants or a love of gardening to consider starting a National Plant Collection, to prevent these plants from disappearing from cultivation.

40

@landscapeevent #Landscape2022 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK

Plant Heritage will also be celebrating four National Plant Collection Holders at Chelsea. Vicki Cooke, Conservation Manager at Plant Heritage says: “We hope that anyone who visits us at Chelsea will be inspired by stories of Collection Holders going above and beyond to conserve and research their chosen plants, and will be motivated to start their own National Plant Collection from this year’s Missing Genera list.”

National Plant Collections are at the heart of Plant Heritage, and there are almost 700 looked after by passionate individuals, families, gardening groups and organisations across the country. Together they showcase the range of plants grown in the UK, from fabulous flowering foxglove trees to stunning spider plants. All are ‘living libraries’ and ensure that plants aren’t lost once they’re no longer available from nurseries or have fallen out of fashion. The Plant Heritage team will be holding a seminar session at LANDSCAPE on the 28th September about the important work that they do. You can be there to find out more – simply register to attend for free at www.landscapeshow.co.uk.

D E L TA L I G HT UK Delta Light UK are delighted to be part of this year’s LANDSCAPE Show. Join them this September on stand E75 to discover their range of products and portfolio of projects. Here is one such project… Step inside this breath-taking architectural project designed by DDM Architectuur. Situated on a lush green site in the middle of an old allotment, the architects meticulously studied the sun’s movement and natural light qualities of the site, before designing the house. In the greenery between a small lake and an old plot division, the project’s layout was designed to maximise daylight hours with the change of seasons, and open views towards the panoramic garden. Covered entirely in natural stone slabs, the residence’s roof and facade allow the building’s raw exterior to blend completely into the landscape. Delta Light were appointed to supply the lighting for this intricate space to complement and illuminate the natural surroundings. The lighting also highlights the beautiful materials used for the house. To emphasise the monolithic character of the house, the 5th façade is clad with Musschelkalk natural stone slabs. The slabs in 3 different sizes are placed in a directionless Roman pattern so that the roofs and facades fuse together enabling the house to blend into the landscape, like a stone in a forest. This is a truly magical project that blurs the inside and outside creating that connection with nature and the outdoors.

I A N JELLEY WI L DLIFE T RU S T Our wildlife is in trouble. The UK is now one of the most nature depleted countries on Earth and 15% of all of our wildlife is under threat from extinction. But it’s not too late, the Wildlife Trusts are on a mission to restore a third of the UK’s land and seas for nature by 2030. Everyone, everywhere, should have access to nature and the joy and health benefits it brings. Each Wildlife Trust is an independent charity formed by people getting together to make a positive difference for wildlife, climate and future generations. Across the UK the Wildlife Trusts care for 2,300 diverse and beautiful nature reserves and work with others to manage their land for nature too. The Wildlife Trusts are embarking on a new strategy with a bold goal that, by 2030, nature will be in recovery with abundant and diverse wildlife everywhere, and that natural processes will be creating wilder landscapes where people and nature thrive.

YPHA, Young People in Horticulture Association, is a free association set up in January 2020 by 3 young horticulturists missing the networking and connection that other generations have within our industry. YPHA is for anyone under the age of 35 that works in or studies horticulture, our aims are to facilitate collaboration, education, and innovation within the group and wider. We have partnered with The LANDSCAPE Show to meet more young horticulturists, from landscapers, gardeners to garden centre staff to join this great free association and to unite the scatterings of under 35’s in horticulture. With this partnership we hope to hit areas of horticulture that may not have heard of YPHA and get them to help us bring more under 35’s into our industry. If you want to get involved or learn more, make sure you visit our stand in September at the NEC, Birmingham.

The Landscape industry can play a huge role in nature’s recovery by designing and delivering nature rich projects that help our wildlife to thrive, combat climate change and benefit people’s mental and physical health. Why not come along and hear more about how you can take action for wildlife when you visit The LANDSCAPE Show later this year? Wildlife Trust is also working with The LANDSCAPE Show as part of their Wildlife Friendly Garden Design Competition this year. J O HN WY E R B O W LES & W YE R A Contemporary Garden in Berkhamsted This domestic garden in Hertfordshire has been one of Bowles & Wyer’s favourite design and build projects in recent years, where the brief was to create a family garden with a large lawn area. The sloping site meant they needed an innovative design to create the modern country garden that the client wanted – combining their needs of a large lawn, a circular fire pit area and an office building within the space.

48

@landscapeevent #Landscape2022 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK

Forgoing the obvious solution of terracing, Bowles & Wyer designed an elliptical floating lawn as the centrepiece to the garden, with a curved Corten Steel wall retaining the back of the lawn lower down the site. Curving shapes form the design identity of the landscape – as well as the oval-shaped lawn, one curving continuous paved pathway, with regular step risers, stretches from top to bottom of the garden. This challenging design combined with Vande Moortel paving wasn’t something the Bowles & Wyer team had done before, but one that complemented the garden’s contemporary style and ensured that it read as a whole. Whilst they’re well versed in residential projects of all

shapes and sizes, their portfolio also spans commercial roof gardens, residential developments, hard-working public spaces and show gardens too. At Bowles & Wyer, they design, build and tend landscapes for private individuals, businesses and organisations across the UK and beyond. With a reputation for creating award-winning schemes with an imaginative approach and high-quality service, they believe landscapes have the power to enhance lives, and work hard to make that happen every day. John Wyer will be speaking at The LANDSCAPE Show as part of a Society of Garden Designers (SGD) panel about the Fundamentals of Design on the 29th of September. L AN D S C A P ES This project focused on taking inspiration from brownfield sites and the existing ‘weeds’ that colonised the garden to explore the potential of small urban spaces. It was originally a sea of concrete hard standings and dilapidated brick walls. We broke it all out, crushed it up and chucked it all back in as planting substrates and innovative hardscape features. We chose plants suited to these arid and harsh environments to create a sustainable meadow habitat full of edible herbs. We used some 9cm perennials but also experimental seed mixes to naturally colonise the space and create a seed bank that will evolve with a changing climate. We celebrated the ideas of ‘wild porosity’ to create permeable hardscape features which kept the space practical but also provided homes for a variety of wildlife.

50

@landscapeevent #Landscape2022 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK

This was an experimental project with great clients who were really open to these ideas and engaged with this process. The idea being it’s more about gentle editing than heavy gardening and they’ve done it brilliantly with no previous horticultural knowledge.

Northamptonshire outdoor lighting specialists, Lumena, have always embraced ‘green credentials’ and technology. Since launching in 2010, they have always taken the energy-efficient approach, first with the launch of their LED range in 2012, and, later with the introduction of the Pro Solar Range in 2019. Now, more than ever, installers and designers are incorporating renewable energy sources into their projects. Easier installation, zero energy costs and low environmental impact are benefits too important to ignore. The Eden Project, a leading U.K. based eco visitor attraction, have taken to Lumena’s Pro Solar lighting range. Until recently, mains powered bollard lights were used to illuminate the gardens from dusk. The bollards were tainted from years of outdoor exposure and needed replacing. For a team which shares Lumena’s passion for the environment and conservation, it was clear a renewable alternative would be best suited.

An anti-glare, downwards illumination was required from the replacement fittings. Throughout the year, it is common for night-time walks to take place, so lowerlevel access lighting was essential to keep visitors safe. Two solar path lights were selected for the task; the Sol-Icon with PIR motion sensor, and the Eccentrica, a stylish-looking solar bollard. Much of the lighting at the Eden Project is being changed to solar. Some solar path lights were installed towards the end of 2021, following on with additional installation. The landscaping team are very happy with the result: reliable and robust lighting that lasts for hours! See Lumena’s range of lighting for yourself at The LANDSCAPE Show at the NEC in Birmingham.

AD AM VET E RE - A D A M V ET ER E L A NDSCAP E & G A RD E N ES IG N The clients wanted a complete redesign of a part of their sloping aspect garden, which had been a traditional cottage garden with herbaceous, perennial planting for many years. Having recently constructed a new garage/garden workshop, which linked to the main house by means of a ‘wraparound’ portico, they wanted a contemporary courtyard design for the garden. Importantly, it had to be sustainable in terms of both the materials and plants chosen. The building materials should be hardwearing with a long-life expectancy and sourced locally and/or from the UK. The planting should be lower maintenance and drought tolerant where possible to limit water usage. It should also positively add to the biodiversity and ecology of the remainder of the site.

54

@landscapeevent #Landscape2022 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK

The newly designed courtyard would be used for relaxing in for most of the day and for entertaining family and friends. Its east/south aspect also allows the space to be used for much of the year, so year-round interest was also imperative. There should be flexible zones for cooking,

Lynne is currently working on a range of projects on site and in design. About to go on site with a large multilevel garden for a 1920s residence in a conservation area backing onto Hampstead Heath in London, where sustainability has been a priority. The team have managed to eliminate almost all walls, drains, there are porous paths, groundcover lawns, meadows and lots of native plants. They are almost finished, on site with a long and sinuous garden for a new build house in the Arts & Crafts style in Middlesex, where more than 50% of the plants had to be native. There’s a ‘jetty’ over a wildlife pond, already teaming with tadpoles and newts. Also, soon to finish a linear, naturalistic, multi-level, parterre garden for a contemporary house, where they’ve used Scottish Schist for the first time – and it’s gorgeous. They have also just completed designs for a newly married couple in Dulwich – a city, shady woodland garden with Corten steel multi-level water feature and midnight black bricks teamed with Scout Moor York stone. To add to the list, the team

have also just completed the layout for two acres in the Surrey Hills for a young family and a another for a young family in a conservation area near Golders Hill park with reclaimed York Stone, adventure play for the children and a natural splash pond. The team are also about to start designing a garden for Lynne’s first ‘hacienda’ style 1950s house in north London and a country garden in a Dorset village as well as Chairing the Society of Garden Designers. Lynne will be hosting an SGD seminar session looking at the Fundamentals of Design at the LANDSCAPE Show at the NEC in September. Make sure you’re there to listen.

D E BB IE C ARROLLS T E P CHAN G E L T D Debbie Carroll is a garden designer, researcher, and author whose experience in designing for care settings for residents with dementia led to a research project to answer why gardens were not more actively used even when designed to the latest guidance. Along with designer Mark Rendell they investigated what hindered engagement outside. Their key finding identified a correlation between the culture of the organisation (how they did things there) and how actively used the outside space was. Any design support needs to match the current care culture if it is to be used beyond the novelty period of a new space. Just as designers assess the site for the right plants in the right place so the role of Care Culture needs to be considered in the same way. This new context to delivering appropriate support in care settings they call ‘Relationship-centred Design’. Initially Debbie and Mark published their research as a practical tool called the ‘Care Culture Map & Handbook’ to aid care settings on a culture change journey to increased engagement. This year sees the publication of ‘A Designer Handbook for Creating Actively Used Care Setting Gardens’ guiding Designers in understanding the role of Care Culture and providing the right support for the right setting. Step Change Design Ltd was formed to share the findings through these publications and other support to Care settings and Designers to ensure future gardens enable Residents and Staff to engage meaningfully outside as and when they choose for the long term. Join Debbie at The LANDSCAPE Show where she will be Celebrating the New Wellbeing Generation with London College of Garden Design.

The Association of Fencing Industries (AFI) represents members across UK fencing. Bringing fencing contractors, manufacturers, stockists and installers together we give strength to the industry to work together to resolve issues. AFI promotes safety, quality and professionalism. As well as her media work, a concern for wildlife and sustainability permeates through her garden design projects and consultancy work. Her largest, most recent project has been working with military charity Veterans’ Growth to establish a therapy garden on a 5-acre site in East Sussex. Veterans’ Growth provides social and therapeutic horticulture to veterans from the tri-services who are dealing with mental ill health. Starting with formerly agricultural land which had been used for grazing, the garden has developed into a market garden growing fruit, vegetables and productive ornamentals, such as edible flowers and plants used for dyeing. Higher levels of biodiversity in a garden have been proven to have a positive impact on mental health, so encouraging a healthy population of many different species has become a key part of creating this healing place. this in mind, many areas of the site have been created specifically to provide habitat and other areas are managed sympathetically to allow local species of plants and animals to flourish. Sarah will be sharing her knowledge at The LANDSCAPE Show with London College of Garden Design on “Celebrating the New Environmental Generation”. Register to attend and find out more.

H A RRY HO L D I N G -H AR R Y H OL DING G A RD E N D ES IG N The team at Harry Holding Garden Design have completed the masterplan stage for a four-acre area of Mallards Estate, on the Isle of Man – a unique and exciting project that reimagines what a botanical garden can be. Their client’s brief was to create a landscape that showcases the genus Cornus. They are taking an alternative approach to the traditional botanical garden – creating novel environments and habitats based on an ‘ecosystems approach’ as opposed to a ‘stamp collection’ of plants which are phytogeographically arranged. Cornus will be arranged by their habitat preferences, with the creation of an overarching gradient running from woodland and glades to woodland edge, shrubland, meadow and wetland, along with a myriad of microclimates and niches. Listening to their environmental needs, and taking inspiration from nature, the design will result in a dynamic community of associated plants and a fully immersive landscape – the chance to experience Cornus in a real and natural space.

AI PH

Since 1948, AIPH has united horticultural producers in an international community that thrives to this day. Much has changed in that time. Technologies advanced, cities rose from the ground and we have become more connected than ever. As a result, our essential bond with nature has been weakened. AIPH strives to reignite and uphold an appreciation of plants that we believe is a basic human instinct. We support the work of grower associations globally and together we champion a prosperous industry, growing plants that enhance lives, advance societies and sustain our planet, for this generation and the next. AIPH is committed to being the ‘world’s champion for the power of plants’. The LANDSCAPE Show provides access to the latest ideas and products for greening our environments and is an event that AIPH is proud to support.

Crafting a dramatic and immersive experience is paramount and they want there to be a sense of adventure and mystery. The experience will be akin to exploring an untouched landscape, where the lie of the land and visual cues from nature will gently nudge journeys towards key experiences and atmospheric changes. Beyond the visitor’s experience, the benefits to local and wider wildlife are at the forefront of their design thinking. Ongoing management techniques over the coming decades will focus on increasing the biodiversity of the site and improving soil health. Join Harry at The LANDSCAPE Show where he will be “Celebrating the New Environmental Generation” with London College of Garden Design.

playfields. The unique 300mm deep geocell was selected to meet the required depth of topsoil as specified by the landscape architects. Once the Geoweb cells were filled the topsoil was seeded with high-spec grass seed to create a fully vegetated finish. In areas that required additional protection Greenfix GeoJute™, 100% Jute Erosion Control Mesh was used over the topsoil to protect against surface erosion. The biodegradable mesh aids establishment as it protects newly sown seeds during germination and over time the product will biodegrade adding nutrients into the soil to further assist the vegetation. For further information or design assistance talk to the Greenfix team at The LANDSCAPE Show in September at the NEC.

The NSITG, which operates on behalf of everyone in the natural stone industry has six key aims: • To promote the natural stone industry as a rewarding career opportunity. • To increase the number of people participating in existing sector training and formal qualification options. • To develop new training and qualification provision where required. • To make it as easy as possible for employers to engage with employee skills development. • To increase the penetration of CSCS Cards. • To celebrate, nurture and promote the talent within the industry. NSITG is proud to partner The LANDSCAPE Show as the premier event for the whole sector to come together to share best practice and latest cutting-edge ideas.

NC C S TREETSCA P E State of the Art in Urban Paving Re-pointing. It’s a Tough Job - Do it Right Once – Not Every Year! Repointing urban granite sett paving that is heavily exposed and frequently trafficked, was always a difficult and thankless task for all involved. However, inspections were made during 2021 of Local Authority & Commercial urban repointing projects using GftK’s vdw 850 system from NCC Streetscape, which are now almost 15 years old (Newark Market Square), 13 & 12 years old (Hitchen Market Square & Church Road respectively), and 8 years old (Norwich City Centre & the Arc Commercial Development, Bury St. Edmunds). These all showed the sett paved surfaces to be not only sound, but looking good, in great condition and ready for many more years of service to come.

@landscapeevent #Landscape2022 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK

In all these busy public spaces, the previous pointing and repointing materials had failed, and usually their breakdown was significant within just a year or two in these demanding environments, including direct weathering with frequent vehicular traffic, multiple heavy duty truck loadings, extensive de-icing salt usage in winter, plus spillages of ‘all-sorts’, requiring frequent

Women In Natural Stone (WINS) has been established to provide networking and support for women in the stone industry and wider architectural and construction sectors. WINS is the latest initiative from the Stone Federation, the trade association for natural stone sector in the UK. As well as supporting those within the industry, the group also aims to encourage the next generation of women into construction, and as numbers grow, WINS will be able to establish a system of mentoring. We’re delighted to be exhibiting at The LANDSCAPE Show again and are looking forward to being part of the ‘Women in the Industry’ day at the event. We look forward to connecting with landscape designers, architects and natural stone companies and spreading the word on the networking and support opportunities that WINS offers. There are so many fantastic women within our industry, and we can’t wait to meet you all!

jet-washing and mechanical street cleaning. However, this was and is all no problem for the unique GftK vdw 850 paving joint system, and these projects were also completed on time and on budget, because work could continue, even in cold, and / or wet weather, without delay. These projects all clearly demonstrate GftK is the ideal solution for Local Authorities and Developers, with their professional teams, to cost effectively refurbish and repoint natural stone paving setts on urban roads and other exposed public spaces. Expensive annual repointing works was no longer required, meaning the real-time cost savings for the authorities have been and continue to be significant – not to mention savings due to the lack of paving related claims! Visit the NCC Streetscape team at LANDSCAPE in September and put GftK in your paving refurbishment and repointing to make ongoing savings in your budgets.

R ACHEL BA I L E Y - RA C H EL B AI LEY GA RD E N D E S IG N Rachel runs an award-winning design practice in Scotland that aims to create plant-filled gardens, which are good for people and wildlife, and that aims to have a low environmental impact. One of their current projects is a garden for an office building in Stirling. The central quadrangle will be a plant-filled space that will offer a refuge for both the employees during work breaks and also for wildlife. As part of the project, they are investigating the carbon footprint of the project and how much carbon can be sequestered over a set period of time taking into account all the materials, the build and the ongoing aftercare required. They are also looking at the connectivity of the site with the surrounding landscape.

74

@landscapeevent #Landscape2022 LANDSCAPESHOW.CO.UK

A couple of domestic gardens that they are also working on are both focused on having a low environmental impact. These gardens will be reusing paving, are predominantly built from renewable materials (ie, timber) and will be heavily planted - so good for improving biodiversity and permeability, sequestering carbon, and improving the soil.

DE S I G N For Vanessa Hoch and Rachel Pocock at VaRa, garden design is all about creating outdoor spaces to enjoy, and views to take in all year round. Their clients’ existing garden in Cuffley, Hertfordshire, was built on a steep incline, with little to no flat areas for dining or relaxing. So VaRa set about redesigning the space to replace their sloped lawn with generous platforms and stone steps, all retained by Corten and copper slate cladding, and surrounded by lush planting, to lead you gently through the garden with lots of spaces to stop along the way. A cedar-clad studio at the top of the garden provides an all-weather space from which to relax and enjoy the new view; planting gives year-round interest, texture and colour, with some lovely highlights for each season, from spring right through to winter. Ambient lighting provides a lovely glow, highlighting structural trees and sculptures, as well as inviting you through the space, whilst two water features - one at the top and one at the bottom of the

PLAN T H E R I T AGE

T H E G A RD ENERS G UI LD Unique services specifically for gardeners! The Gardeners Guild has been supporting gardeners for nearly 16 years. During this time, they have been developing services that are of specific benefit to selfemployed gardeners. Many (not all) gardeners worry about having enough winter income. This year, The Gardeners Guild have been testing a ‘winter’ advertising campaign where up to 5% of their annual turnover was spent on Google adverts to promote our ‘Find a Gardener’ service. The campaign ran during the months of November, December, January, February and March 2021/2022. Gardeners comment that a customer they find in the winter is often a good customer - being interested in all year round garden maintenance. Our hope is that our winter advertising campaign will also educate people about the fact that gardening doesn’t stop in winter. As well as creating an extra 3000 website visitors for their over 800 members, they also gained some valuable data about the type of person looking for a gardener to help improve the campaign next year. Maximising your winter income is the easiest way to increase your annual income without having to burn yourself-out during the busy growing season. Also, winter weather seems to be increasingly mild. More services are being added! Come and meet The Gardeners Guild at The LANDSCAPE Show so that they can answer any questions you may have about membership or a career in horticulture as a selfemployed gardener. Gary Edwards will also be hosting a seminar session sharing valuable tips on “The Advancement in Landscape Consultancy”. Register to visit for free at www.landscapeshow.co.uk

Plant Heritage conserves the diversity of our garden plants. We have a rich horticultural history, but this history doesn’t maintain itself. We aim to conserve and safeguard our horticultural heritage by keeping living examples of garden plants in the National Plant Collections® scheme. There are now over 690 National Plant Collections, created and curated by individuals or organisations who are passionate about protecting the diversity of our rich flora. Plant Heritage has partnered with LANDSCAPE as the National Plant Collections form the backbone of garden plant diversity in the UK. They give choice and expertise to gardeners, designers and nurseries. Collections can also be housed in a variety of settings, both outdoors and in, and we are always seeking new people and places to develop collections, to keep this diversity safe for the future.

The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) accredits companies who design, build and maintain gardens throughout the UK against a strict inspection process. This ensures that we can promote our members to the public knowing they will offer a professional service to the best of our ability. Whilst this is a great resource for the public, we also spend a great deal of time in establishing ways we can support our members. This may be through business advice, training, guidance with policy or sometimes simply signposting the right place to go for information. The process to join is rigorous. It encompasses all categories which include Landscaper, Designer and Professional Gardener. The APL is the only landscaping and gardening scheme operator of Trustmark. Throughout 2021 and the start of 2022 The APL have been creating a series of construction guidance information. This is free to download for members and non-members and will eventually create a valuable resource for the whole industry. Our partnered training centres and own apprenticeship also provide a great platform for young aspiring individuals interested in this industry to shine. Garden designers, landscapers and professional gardeners all visit The LANDSCAPE Show, and the APL believe it is a vitally important event in the landscaping calendar to support and take part in. Networking with industry peers is a great way to share information and promote the benefits of APL membership so it would be foolish to miss out!
