Join KQED at the Asian Art Museum on Thursday, March 21, to view its newest exhibition, China’s Terracotta Warriors: The First Emperor’s Legacy, and discover why the terracotta warriors are the Eighth Wonder of the World. Along with more than 100 rare artifacts unearthed from the burial complex of Emperor Qin, known as the First Emperor, the museum presents some of the finest generals, archers and infantrymen from the life-size terracotta army. The exhibition paints the backdrop for the warriors’ creation — the First Emperor’s rise to power, his quest for immortality and his complex legacy. On view February 22 through May 27, 2013.

Jeremy Piven stars as the upstart American who taught the English how to shop in Mr. Selfridge, a new series created by Emmy Award–winning writer Andrew Davies (Pride and Prejudice, Bleak House). Piven recently talked about his first television stint since his Golden Globe and Emmy–award winning role as Ari Gold in Entourage. “I remember exactly where I was when my agent told me about Mr. Selfridge,” he recalls. “I was fascinated and blown away by the story of this true pioneer and a role that’s rare to come by on stage, film or TV.” “He was a pioneer in every sense of the word. You have this American at the turn of the century coming to Britain and having a real sense of what he wants to do — even though it hasn’t been done before.” Flamboyant and visionary Harry Selfridge transformed Chicago’s Marshall Field and Company s into a modern department store before coming to Britain to found Selfridge’s. “It’s a great role and a story many people won’t know. Growing up myself in Chicago and going to Marshall Field’s from the time I was a kid, I had a sense of where this guy came from. But while I’m also an American from Chicago making my way in

unchartered territory, Harry Selfridge was a showman and liked to be the center of attention, whereas I like to disappear in a room and watch everyone else.” Retail outlets were very different before Selfridge came along and invented the modern department store with his shopping palace on London’s Oxford Street. “In one episode, Harry decides to put the beauty products at the front of his store, so as soon as the customers walked in they would see these perfumes and beauty products. No one was doing this yet in the U.K., though they were dabbling with it in Paris. He was smart enough to take ideas from the trailblazers.” “And what’s so fascinating is that here we are 100 years later and you walk into any store and what he took a chance with and implemented in 1909 is still going strong.” Harry Selfridge appeared to be able to look into the very soul of what women wanted. “He loved, honored, respected and celebrated women wanted them to feel empowered.” But as a married family man, Harry also had an eye for the ladies and in the drama falls for celebrated stage star Ellen Love (Zoë Tapper), among others. “You could look at him and say, ‘How could a man who loved his wife and his family be seduced by these other women?’ Because of his love for the arts and for women he falls for Ellen. He’s so enamored with her and the way she carries herself as an artist. Then you see her rise and fall.” “I’m not saying you’ll understand it morally, but Andrew Davies has written such a beautiful script that you could possibly understand why Selfridge would take the path that he does. And yet it’s still surprising.”

Museums Rule! KQED Education partners with de Young to create video about museum etiquette. Ever wondered why you’re not allowed to touch most artwork in a museum? Curious why backpacks aren’t allowed? Do you know why flash photography is a no-no? KQED Education, in partnership with the de Young Museum and its teen ambassador program, recently produced a short comic book–style film called Museums Rule!, which addresses art museum rules and why they exist. The teen ambassadors, who are students from San Francisco high schools, brainstormed ideas for the instructional video, then developed student-friendly explanations for each
of the museum’s rules. The script writing, filming and editing was expertly led by college students from the Bay Area Video Coalition’s youth production company, The Factory. Museums Rule! is shown to all students in advance of a school tour of the de Young, but it can be used to prepare students and lifelong learners who plan to visit any arts and culture institution — in the Bay Area and beyond. In the heart of Richmond, in a neighborhood primarily known for its chronic poverty and violence, the East Bay Center for the Performing Arts is home to a state-of-the-art facility with rehearsal rooms, a theater and a rich history of dedication to youth performers and teaching artists. It was here, in 2012, that KQED hosted its first annual Music and Dance Institute for Educators. Focusing on using KQED media about local performing artists, teachers explored resources from our Spark series and built their own media collections for use in the classroom. They also spent three inspiring days working directly with teaching artists in residence at the center, learning about improvisational music and percussion from different cultures.

“I was expecting [the institute] would be similar to the slew of other professional development activities offered to teachers — one short hands-on activity forcing uncomfortable interaction with strangers followed by a long day of lectures,” noted one participant. “The workshop (thankfully) was nothing like I expected, and I got far more out of it than any other institute I’ve attended. “Instead of lectures, the majority of the time was spent creating art, music and dance. I picked up an instrument I haven’t touched in years, experimented with lyrical poetry and sounds, and most importantly, I rediscovered my love of both music and learning.” The next institute will be held in June. Ed Prohaska was named the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s chief financial officer in 2002, and in 2007, he was also named vice president of enterprise development. He serves as president of the Board of the California Association of Museums and has been on KQED’s finance committee since 2010.
Ann O’Leary is vice president and director of the Children and Families Program at the Center for the Next Generation, a nonpartisan strategic communications think tank in San Francisco. Ann is also a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress and a lecturer in health law at the University of California at Berkeley School of Law.
Camilla Smith is the vice president of development at the Interfaith Center at the Presidio. In addition to serving on the boards of more than half a dozen other local nonprofits, she edits the newsletter for the Bancroft Library, Bancroftiana.

If you are 70½ or older, the return of the charitable IRA rollover may be good news for you. Under the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012, you can make tax-free distributions up to $100,000 directly from your IRA for qualified charitable purposes. Making your gift can be a simple process, without tax complications. Your gift may also count toward your mandatory annual withdrawal. Many KQED supporters know that charitable beneficiary designations of their retirement benefits make good estate planning. This legislation brings back similar tax benefits for gifts made now, while you are able to enjoy the benefits of your generosity.
