KQED’s On Our Watch Investigative Podcast Debuts New Season, New Focus In 2021, Season 1 of KQED’s blockbuster podcast series On Our Watch took an unsettling look into the world of police misconduct. Over the course of that season, the On Our Watch team served hundreds of public records requests and successfully sued the California Highway Patrol, the California Department of Justice and BART to uncover police misconduct records. The podcast had a significant impact. In the months after the podcast aired, two statewide bills passed, expanding access to public records and creating a process to strip an officer of certification after conviction or termination for a serious crime.

Season 2 of On Our Watch tells a story about broken promises, unwritten rules and how a system that is supposed to keep us safe is instead bent on protecting itself. Not to be missed, Season 2 launches on Tuesday, January 23, and drops weekly through Tuesday, March 5. Dive into this provocative series (and listen to other On Our Watch seasons) at kqed.org/onourwatch or wherever you get your podcasts.

KQ E D.O RG • JA N UA RY 20 24

Now, in Season 2, the focus is on California prisons. Host Sukey Lewis will guide listeners through one of the most dangerous prisons in the country: New Folsom prison near Sacramento. Each of the seven episodes traces the story of two correctional officers who work in an elite unit at New Folsom and the price they pay for reporting corruption and abuse by their fellow prison officers. With unprecedented access to disciplinary records, Lewis and her team obtained and analyzed hundreds of documents, audio recordings and videos that have never been released or seen before. The analysis of these materials from the state’s more than 30 prisons reveals how impervious California’s prison system is to reform efforts and how rarely correctional officers are held responsible for injuring and even killing people in their custody.

RADIO

Political Breakdown Daily The balloons dropped, the champagne popped, the clock rolled over and, just like that — it’s an election year. And what a doozy of a year it stands to be. One of the leading presidential candidates is facing 91 charges in four different criminal cases; California will elect a new U.S. senator after the death of Dianne Feinstein; and the San Francisco mayoral race comes amid widespread dissatisfaction with the economics and direction of the city’s governance. KQED gets you ready for all of this with a major expansion of Political Breakdown with co-hosts Marisa Lagos and Scott Shafer. The program shifts to a daily schedule in January, with analysis to air each weekday afternoon during All Things Considered. This means you’ll get a fresh new podcast in your feed each day and can still rely on the great conversations of the Thursday evening show. So whether you’re all-in on the presidential election or only care about the local stuff, Political Breakdown will be here each day to break it down. Political Breakdown Daily launches on January 8. Hear it weekday afternoons during All Things Considered and Thursdays at 6:30pm on KQED 88.5 FM or on the KQED streaming App. Or, find it wherever you get your podcasts.

Don't Miss This All Creatures Great and Small, Season 4

I think that All Creatures Great and Small is the perfect way to relax after a hectic holiday season — and I can’t wait to do just that when Season 4 comes out this January. The stakes may be higher now, as the war hits closer to home for the veterinary clinic, but there is still plenty of joy to be found in Darrowby. Characters find love and community with each other and, of course, find comfort with their beloved animals. I know I always watch with my own dog, Whiskey, snuggled close. Passport members can watch the whole fourth season on January 7, the night of the broadcast premiere. Or, start catching up on all previous seasons now. —Emma Casley, KQED TV Programming Associate

New Chilean Drama Tells the Tale of Two Brothers Thrilling, high-stakes dramas are always on my must-watch list, especially if they navigate complicated relationships and romantic triangles and leave me on the edge of my seat. But when a new drama is also an exploration of societal structures, class conflicts, political upheavals and searches for identity, it becomes my viewing priority. And such is the case with KQED’s first Spanishlanguage drama from Latin America, Hijos del Desierto (Sons of the Desert). The story begins with the 1907 Santa María School massacre, a murderous event incited by the Chilean government against thousands of striking mine workers. In the chaos, two brothers — our protagonists — are forcibly separated; one goes on to a life of privilege, the other is raised on the streets.

Thirty years later, now on opposite sides of the law, the brothers, still unknown to each other, are each fighting for the power and freedom they believe in — and they are both in love with the same woman. Personally, I can't wait to immerse myself in the drama and watch all 10 episodes sans English subtitles. Now almost a full year into my Spanish studies, I'm confident that I can follow the complex twists and turns in this saga without any translation. Or, I'll get to watch it twice! Be sure to tune into Hijos del Desierto on Thursday, January 4, at 9:30pm on KQED 9. —Elyce Berrigan, Managing Editor

Sunday, January 7, at 10pm on KQED 9 As the ’60s are reaching their peak, beauty queen Barbara Parker is crowned Miss Blackpool, but she is ready to take on more than a title and a sash. Following her dreams to London with plans of breaking into the male-dominated comedy scene, she confronts a reality far less sparkling than she envisioned.
