Honoring Women’s History Month

From socially defiant film stars and pioneering scientists to powerhouse political figures and history-changing icons, the women featured in our March lineup are extraordinary. It’s during Women’s History Month that we highlight the many ways women have shaped the world. Whether it’s a look back on the life of a subversive showstopper (Mae West: American Masters, Monday, March 11, at 9pm on KQED 9) or a documentary of the suffrage movement (Perfect 36: When Women Won the Vote, Friday, March 29, at 9:30pm on KQED 9), these programs uplift the contributions and accomplishments of women throughout history. We’re excited to shine a light on these trailblazers from both the past and present day.

At KQED, one of the ways we honor and celebrate Women’s History Month is by curating documentaries, series and shows related to it. In the listings, which begin on page 8, you’ll see Women’s History Month shows highlighted in this teal color. You can find these programs on KQED Public Television or by streaming on KQED Passport or the KQED App.

Moments in Time: 70 Years at KQED

To celebrate our 70th anniversary of public media that informs, inspires and involves, we’re revisiting memorable moments from the past.

In 1993, award-winning broadcast journalist Belva Davis joined KQED as host of the weekly TV news program This Week in Northern California and continued to host it until her retirement in 2012. When Davis started her television career in 1966, she was the first Black female television journalist on the West Coast.

It’s Been a Minute

It’s been much more than a minute — closer to a year and a half — since Brittany Luse took over the host chair for the weekly culture show It’s Been a Minute. But she made herself at home quickly, with guests as wide-ranging as Stacey Abrams (Luse’s first show) and Stephanie Hsu, in conversations that span from astute analysis to hilarious romp. Listeners can expect hot takes, deep dives and random thoughts on everything from Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” to shifting notions of the American dream. It replaces both broadcasts of Our Body Politic, which, sadly, has ended production. We already miss host Farai Chideya’s voice on our airwaves and commend her and the whole Our Body Politic team for their years of excellent work, particularly the show’s reporting on January 6. But we look forward to an expanded role for It’s Been a Minute’s weekly dose of culture and analysis.

It’s Been a Minute plays on KQED Saturdays at 10am with additional airings Sundays at 1am and 8pm. Listen on KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM or on the KQED App. Devin Holt, On-Air Digital Programming Assistant

PODCASTS

Rightnowish

If you’re familiar with the work of Boots Riley — writer/director of the 2018 film Sorry to Bother You and MC of the hip-hop group The Coup — you’re likely intrigued to know more. On the January 15th episode of the weekly podcast Rightnowish, journalist Pendarvis Harshaw sits down with Riley to talk about how his work shapes the Bay Area.

The two discuss Riley’s 2023 seven-part miniseries, I’m a Virgo, which centers on the tale of a 13-foot-tall Black teenager from Oakland. The series explores racism, health care inequities and the struggles of growing up “different” from one’s peers. A fervent social activist, Riley also talks

about pounding the pavement in an effort to reconcile the connection between crime and the closure of local businesses and the need to bring transparency to what has been called Oakland’s “crime wave.” Tune in to hear from this local visionary who has his finger on the pulse of the culture and a hand in directing the future.

Rightnowish is available on the KQED App or wherever you listen to podcasts. Don’t miss KQED’s other popular shows, including Forum, The California Report, The California Report Magazine, MindShift, Sold Out, The Bay, Perspectives and Political Breakdown.

Nolly on MASTERPIECE

As a huge fan of both Helena Bonham Carter and TV history, I feel like Nolly was made just for me. Telling the true story of British soap opera star Noele Gordon, who finds herself unceremoniously fired from her show, Nolly is a high-energy story with a lot of heart. I personally love how we get to see behind the scenes of a ’70s soap opera set. In addition to Helena Bonham Carter’s magnetic performance, Con O’Neill (Our Flag Means Death) is fantastic in a supporting role; fellow fans who are mourning the cancellation of OFMD will be delighted to see him! Passport members can binge the whole series the night of its broadcast premiere on March 17.

50 Years Ago, America’s First Reality TV Show Aired on

PBS

Before the Kardashians, there was the Loud family. And on Thursday, January 11, 1973, their appearance in the first broadcast of An American Family changed television history forever. An experimental 12-hour documentary series, its filming began in May 1971. And two years later, after more than 300 hours of footage were shot over the course of seven months inside the family’s Santa Barbara home, an audience of 10 million fascinated viewers tuned in every week for 12 weeks to watch the real-life drama of father Bill Loud (50), wife Pat Loud (44) and children Lance (19), Kevin (18), Grant (17), Delilah (15) and Michelle (13) unfold.

Prior to An American Family, the staples of family television programs such as The Brady Bunch profiled a model of a perfect happy family who seldom faced any crisis. Unlike any program on broadcast television at the time, An American Family challenged conventional views of middle-class American family life. It unveiled marital tensions that led to Pat seeking divorce after 21 years of marriage, and it embraced Lance, who was the first openly gay person to be an integral member

COMING IN APRIL

The Express Way with Dulé Hill

Check your April issue for air dates and times  What would it be like to create art without sight? How does one explore dance through music that cannot be heard? Renowned actor, dancer and singer Dulé Hill (The West Wing, The Wonder Years) explores these questions as he travels to California, the Appalachian region, Texas and Chicago in this new four-part documentary series.

of an American family shown on television. By the time it was over, An American Family had captivated the country and a new genre of television was born.

An American Family at 50 revisits the original series and examines how it paved the way for the inclusion of more complex family portraits onscreen and for everyday people to challenge social norms offscreen. The documentary also explores how the country reacted to the introduction of “reality television.” The reality genre, now a commonplace concept, was brand new and this was the first type of programming to offer viewers authentic insights into real people’s lives. This concept was something that the original producer and creator, Craig Gilbert, was a firm believer in — that drama can be found in the daily lives of ordinary people. Also featuring interviews with Dick Cavett; Jonathan Murray, whose company produced MTV’s Real World; and others, An American Family at 50 premieres on Tuesday, March 5, at 7pm on KQED 9 and re-airs on Friday, March 8, at 1pm on KQED 9. Facing The Laughter: Minnie Pearl

Friday, March 29, at 8pm on KQED 9

Educated and serious, Sarah Cannon dreamed of becoming a Shakespearean actress. But her playful, uncomplicated alter ego, Minnie Pearl, became famous as the class-act comedian instead. This 90-minute documentary explores the simple character’s legacy and how she became an icon of country music through radio, live stage performances and television.

SATURDAY NIGHT MOVIE

Man in the Moon

Saturday, March 23, at 8pm on KQED 9

This 1991 coming-ofage drama, set in rural Louisiana in the summer of 1957, stars Reese Witherspoon as 14-yearold Dani in her film debut. It follows Dani and her older sister Maureen (Emily Warfield) and their special bond, which is thrown off balance when an older boy moves in next door.
