WATERTOWN SOUTH DAKOTA

Client: Reliabank Date of Completion: 2000 Area:

Introduction

Program

Situated at a major intersection on the north side of Watertown, this freestanding bank is, to a large extent, an expression of the personality of its President. It is intended to evoke the sense of warmth and approachability associated with the rural banks in our memories. The use of patterned brick, large windows and an open two story lobby with a stone floor and exposed heavy timber trusses all help achieve this feeling.

The President of the bank lives in an historic house and owns three historic bank buildings. He requested a design that would evoke a sense of the warmth and detail of his historic buildings, while responding to the needs of modern customers at a busy intersection on the northern edge of Watertown, South Dakota.

The bank is sited to orient the entrance to face the intersection. This feature, common among historic banks and essential to retail success in South Dakota, allows approaching customers to see both the entrance and parking. The site is master planned for bank expansion and the future addition of a retail/office building to the north. Site area is also set aside for a series of wells serving the building’s geothermal heat pump system.

Extensive brick detailing and punched window openings common to historic banks are juxtaposed with a dramatic entry to appeal to the eye of both driver and pedestrian.

The customer entry leads to a two story lobby around which all of the bank’s services are arranged. This arrangement attempts to achieve a sense of spaciousness within a very compact building envelope.

A warm palette of materials includes tumbled brick, limestone, variegated slate flooring, pine trim, corrugated steel wainscot and timber trusses. A salvaged gym floor from the President’s old school is used in his office.
