Bedgebury National Pinetum, one of the finest outdoor attractions in the South East is facing closure following cut backs in funding from the Forestry Commission. Conservation projects, education programmes (enjoyed by over 4000 school children annually) and vital tree work necessary to keep the attraction open for visitors are all at risk. The Friends of Bedgebury, the charity which maintains this historical site, have launched an appeal to increase the amount of annual memberships, which provide the important funding needed to support the Pinetum and vital projects, ensuring it remains open for future generations to enjoy.

Do’s and Dont’s when Employing a Nanny When you first decide to employ a nanny it can feel a bit strange. You may feel guilty for leaving your child or even jealous of someone else looking after them. However, when you find the right nanny, it came make it an extremely beneficial experience for you and your children. There are however some crucial do’s and dont’s to remember. Do... •Leave your nanny a kitty so they can pay for playgroups, activities and extra food, etc. and top this up frequently. If you want to keep an eye on what is spent, ask for receipts. •Discuss problems straight away. Don’t let it carry on for a long period as it will be harder for them to change. •Let them know if anyone unexpected is coming to the house that they will need to deal with. •Remember that a nanny has their own life. Don’t expect them to baby sit at a few hours’ notice. •Pay them on time, provide them with payslips and review their salary on an annual basis. •Appreciate your nanny, remember a good nanny is hard to find. Don’t... •Ring every few hours to check how everything is going, as they will feel that you don’t trust them. •Assume they will know what you want doing and how to do it •Be late home, or if you are going to be, ring and let them know •Worry that your child will get more attached to your nanny than to you. Children always know who their parents are and if your child likes being with the nanny be reassured that they are happy with the situation.

With the tabloids full of reports on the country’s immersion in an Age of Austerity and people not able to afford those little luxuries and extravagances of the past, It seems a new age of thriftiness is upon us. Reminiscent perhaps of a bygone wartime era with a definite trend towards a ‘make do and mend’ philosophy, this might sound gloomy news to many of us. Nevertheless with cuts everywhere, we are all looking to make economies and save money by making sensible cutbacks. Certainly for some of us the answer lies in buying vintage or ‘used’ and the perception of buying second hand or as many of us prefer to call it ‘nearly new’ or ‘pre-loved’ is changing all the time. It’s now even ‘in vogue’ to sniff out cut-price quality bargains and watch people’s stunned
that they had seen an upsurge in customer’s spending at their sales with regular pre-sale queues of excited parents anticipating the bargains to be had. With never a spare ounce of space at the sales it seems parents are also even keener to recycle all they can and embrace this age of austerity in typical British ‘true grit’ style. Although not a new thing, buying nearly new cut-price bargains is gaining new found respect amongst those keen to ‘do their bit’, with scores of thrifty parents already adopting a new regime and seeing the financial benefits. Perhaps then, for many of us, 2011 is set to be the year to cut wasteful spending, increase our recycling efforts and save money, which, as we know, can be rewarding, fun and good for our children’s futures too!

Monty’s truly is unique…and this is confirmed again and again by mums and nannies who join Monty’s having attended other music groups. Some comment on the warmth and atmosphere, some on the professionalism (“why isn’t Monty’s on TV?) and some on the quality and range of the props and instruments but they all seem to agree that the highly colourful and visual element of children’s theatre in each Monty’s session is exceptional. To delight a child, you must be able to enter their world and light their imagination and at Monty’s Music, entertainment is the key! Once a child is enthralled, they will learn the most in the best way possible and love the whole musical and movement experience! From the moment Monty is woken up and pops his head out of his kennel, the excitement begins. From little ones, as young as 6 months, eyes are glued to Monty and frequently little arms and hands start waving in anticipation! Every session has an exciting theme, and is
carefully structured to give a great variety of up-beat children songs, nursery rhymes and children’s classics. To keep the grown-ups from groaning (!), the variety of over 300 songs are used at Monty’s and every term you take home a new free CD containing over 50 songs. Add to this a huge diversity of instruments, a visual extravaganza (including dry ice machines, bubble machines, puppets and motorized props) stimulating movement, action rhymes and dance and the essential element of dramatic children’s theatre and you have something pretty special! Class size is very small and in age-bands and as many of you will know, for some time the waiting lists have been somewhat lengthy! So GOOD NEWS!
