Website myths put to rest
So, why is it some businesses still don’t have one? We’ve done a little myth-busting to find out.
After all you may not have a good eye for design. Well, if you can use a keyboard and mouse then you can manage a PageFlavour website. Their websites are already prebuilt by a professional designer using glossy images, which can easily be replaced with your own. They have plenty of themes suitable for Mumpreneurs, so just pick a design and start writing about your business.
1) I can’t afford it

We’ve all seen the ads for ‘free websites’, but when you read the small print you discover it’s not free at all and the features are… well, you get what you pay for. Then there are the website designers who want to sell you the all singing and all dancing website for £100s of pounds.
Using PageFlavour means the design has already been done, so all you need to do is add your information. Although this shouldn’t be rushed, PageFlavour makes it easy for you to build your website pageby-page, working to your schedule. It lets you write a webpage offline as a draft, publishing with a single click only when you are happy with the result. At any point you can preview this draft to see what it will look like in context.
Many Mumpreneurs overlook the importance of having a website. With over 70% of the population now having access to a computer or smart phone, the need to have an online presence is greater than ever.
Laura Louise, a make up artist from Tunbridge Wells, only needed a small website (lauralouisemua.co.uk), detailing her services, prices and a gallery to showcase her previous work. Laura chose to use PageFlavour which let her pick a pre-designed template that she could update herself – cutting out the web design middle-man, and it only costs her £60 a year.

4) I don’t need one Try telling that to Gemma, a babysitter from Paddock Wood who wasn’t getting any response from her flyers. While most of us wouldn’t expect a young babysitter to have a website, Gemma thought it would make her look more professional. After putting her website address
(gemmasbabysitting.com) on her flyers she has received many phone calls, jobs and comments about how nice it was to see her fees clearly.
5) Will I be top of Google? This area is a minefield, with many companies offering false promises about search engine optimisation (SEO). Have you ever wondered what happens if 20 business want to be in the top 10? Graham Allwright of Goplex Communications, a designer on the Queen’s jubilee pageant website, offered this advice: ”There is no magic button for any company to put you at the top. How your site is ranked is based on various factors, mainly quality and reputation. The web is just another avenue and doesn’t replace the need to advertise and market your business using traditional methods. It takes time, effort and patience.” In summary, it’s not all about online stores – think of it more as a brochure. Your customers are searching online and they will find your competitors. Directories are OK for looking up phone numbers, but a website will allow you to give so much more information and reassurance that people are looking for. Water babies comes to West Kent Teaching water confidence and safety techniques from birth, the uniquely structured Water Babies programme is designed to make the most of babies’ natural affinity with water. With progressive training, babies can be taught life saving skills such as turning onto their backs or, following a sudden submersion, swimming to the nearest solid object. And it’s so important that they do. Within the last three years, at least ten of our children saved themselves from drowning – despite five of them being only two.
Family photography Having spent my entire working life as a photographer, starting on plate cameras with bellows and a black cloth over my head, I’ve seen many changes in photography over the years. Today’s cameras are fantastic and with a little knowhow anyone with a bit of training can take nice photographs of their children.
Swimming from birth is excellent for babies’ development, providing a complete physical workout which in turn aids the development of the brain. What’s more, regular swimming can enhance their awareness and improve eating and sleeping patterns – a definite bonus!
Most people don’t want to read a big camera manual so end up being confused what to do and usually have bad advice over how to take a nice portrait, the sun behind the shoulder, using flash, asking a subject to say cheese, all things I don’t do. I train ordinary Mums and Dads to understand light, backgrounds, how to set up a camera properly. It’s not rocket science and I pride myself on not making it difficult to understand.
With a clear emphasis on having fun, lessons are generally very sociable occasions – and excellent for strengthening the bond between the two of you. Water Babies lessons run across Kent. We had the shoot on a Wednesday & the photos were available to view the following Monday. They are all so good & varied (even though I’m not the most photogenic of people), we are struggling to decide which ones to buy! Deep in the heart of Kent, a group of 12 children aged between three to five are sitting silently in a small copse of Hazelnut trees surrounding a cool, still pond. The only sounds that you can hear are the gentle rustle of the trees, the humming of the occasional bee and the odd plop as a nut hits the water...
There are obvious health benefits that come with Yoga you feel fitter, more energetic, happier and peaceful and that’s just the children! The adults enjoy it too, in particular the after effects; everyone seems genuinely pleased and chilled out.
The weird thing is that they are not outdoors and it’s not summer, they are experiencing the wonderful world of Yoga Nut; a child’s Yoga class through storytelling and movement. Caroline Miller is a qualified British Wheel of Yoga (BWY) teacher of seven years and has set up the excellent Yoga Nut classes for children. As a mother of three young children herself, she is also life qualified in dealing with kids. Caroline said “I am really passionate about Yoga and the health benefits it gives us as adults. My children always want to join in when I practice at home, so it seemed a natural and obvious progression to

Education 11+ Examinations and Summer Preparation courses One of Britain’s leading tutoring service providers, Fleet Tutors, has noted that the fastest growing trend is for coaching for the 11+ grammar school entrance test, especially now that many grammar schools hold their entrance exams earlier in the autumn term school. The industry also reports a doubling in demand for tutors to help seven and eight year-olds with private preparatory school entrance. Recent results show that over 80% of students exceeded their predicted scores in public exams when a reputable tuition provider is commissioned. Mylene Curtis, Managing Director of ‘Fleet Tutors’, says “that parental feedback following our intensive, small group ‘11+ Examination Preparation Courses’ is overwhelmingly positive, with parents reporting excellent results and many students receiving offers from their first choice schools. In an increasingly competitive world, parents are often willing to support their 10/11yrs olds with additional tuition during the school holidays to ensure that that much prized offer of a place at their preferred school is achievable.” Demand for support in boosting a child’s 11+ results, has been met with a sudden growth of intensive, small group revision courses. Children experience fast-paced, focused and intensive tuition with the vast majority achieving an increase of at least one grade when a reputable provider is used. Typically, 11+ exam preparation courses are designed for small groups of 10 and 11year olds – with a maximum class size of 5 or 6 learners. Nature Nuts Summer Holiday Events 2012 Young children can get closer to nature and top up their outdoor play time this summer holiday thanks to Nature Nuts. Nature Nuts, which holds nature-themed play sessions for kids aged 2-5 years old, is offering special morning events for tots at venues serving families in Bromley, Sevenoaks and Knockholt The summer play sessions promise fun games, hands-on crafts and colouring-in, as well as a nature-trail challenge and small prize for each child. Music for everyone! Dave Hazlewood is passionate about music! A drummer with around 30 years experience gigging, recording and touring and with a diploma from top London drum school ‘Drumtech’, he runs the one8e studio near Tunbridge Wells. The studio offers lessons in drums, guitar, bass, vocals and keyboard. It is fully equipped with top level equipment and is totally soundproofed and air conditioned. Lessons are available for all abilities (beginner to advanced) and all ages (from 7 - 70) with special daytime rates for retired or self employed people.
Join a band This August the school will be running group ‘band lessons’, putting musicians of similar age and ability into bands to learn and maybe even write songs. The goal at the end will be either a live performance or a recording session. Register your interest early.
Lessons can follow a very structured syllabus or can be adapted to suit individual students needs. They focus on being realistic, practical and fun with extensive use of backing tracks and play along material.
