Seasonal Special 22 Great Days Out

Welcome to

Spring

Education Matters

Spring has sprung (well nearly), colour is starting to burst through and the days are getting a little longer (don’t forget clocks go forward on 28 March). With the weather hopefully getting a little milder, it will be great to do more outside again. Take a look at our Great Days Out feature p22 for ideas for you and your family – lots of local attractions and places to visit in and around Essex. The Active Kids feature on p10 is a comprehensive list of ideas to get your kids up and about, trying new things, and having fun. One for your diary - Mothers Day is on 29th March. I hope you all get spoilt and take time to relax. I personally love handmade cards and pictures from my daughter. I’m not so keen on the burnt toast and cold tea. However, I will smile and pretend that it’s the best breakfast I have ever had (like us mums do) just to see the BIG smile on her face. This March marks my first anniversary as Publisher of KidAround. How quick the time has gone. I hope you have enjoyed my first three issues as much as I have enjoyed making them – I look forward to working on many more! Happy Easter and enjoy Spring

‘West end’ shopping experience to come to Colchester!

The £30million plus re-development of Williams & Griffin department store is now well underway. The east building has now been demolished with a new steel frame in its place, and brickworks are due to start this month. The re-development will expand the shop floor space by 50%, with the new store offering a bright and airy shopping environment, with more natural daylight built around a large central atrium with up and down escalators to every floor. The stunning new High Street facades will incorporate the Victorian Radcliffe and Tudor Buildings, and inside, many of the fixtures and finishes (designed by top London retail designers HMKM) will take their design cues from the stores, and Colchester’s heritage. There will be a far wider choice of brands , and accessibility will be improved across the store, with a walkway link at the rear directly to the ground floor of the store. Archaeological discoveries were made at the site last summer, where they found a first century Roman jewellery hoard being the crowning glory of their four-month excavation. The find, which included three gold armlets, a silver chain necklace, two silver bracelets, a substantial silver armlet, a small bag of coins and a small jewellery box containing two sets of gold earrings and four gold rings has been donated to Colchester Museum by the stores owners, Fenwick. The store is remaining open throughout the re-development period, until it is completed in Spring 2016. In the meantime, the store continues to offer all the brands you know and love at Williams & Griffin. www.kidaround.biz •Spring 15 • North Essex • 7

Things we like for Spring

Let’s be honest, not all of us are blessed with craft skills. So, we have hand-picked some of our favourite spring ideas that can be easily achieved at home.

Mother’s Day Gift Jar

These gift jars look lovely filled with Mum’s favourite things. They can be used to store other things afterwards. Painting the jar is optional but easy with spray paint. Just mask off the parts of the jar that you want to keep clear and spray the rest, you may need two coats. Fill the jar with lots of lovely things and then tie a ribbon or perhaps new scarf around the top Hang a tag and you are finished.

Mother’s Day Vouchers

Make your mum some personal ’Gift Vouchers’. Print out templates from the internet or design your own vouchers, fill them in with things that your mum would like. How about a manicure, a weekend full of lie-ins, breakfast in bed, a day at the beach, helping with chores, making dinner, the list is endless. Not just for Mother’s day!

Yummy treats

How about making a delicious treat, strawberries covered in chocolate. Easy to make and delicious to eat. Clean the strawberries – don’t remove the stalks, you’ll need to hold these when dipping! Let the strawberries dry completely. Melt milk chocolate in a glass bowl over simmering water. Dip the strawberries in, holding the stem, then place in lines on a flat tray. Melt white chocolate in the same way, dip a fork in and drizzle the white chocolate over the coated strawberries. Allow to set for about 30 minutes and then enjoy.

WIN £500 For Your School

The Meadows Shopping Centre in Chelmsford are giving their local primary schools the chance to win a fabulous prize, as £500 worth of equipment is up for grabs in their Shop for Schools campaign. The campaign kicks off on Monday 16th March and runs through until Friday 17th July. Parents, carers, friends and family will be able to collect a token for every £10 they spend in the Meadows shops, restaurants and cafés. Tokens can then be used to vote for their nominated school by posting into the Shop for Schools collection box located in the middle of the Meadows shopping centre. At the end of the campaign the school that’s collected the most tokens will receive £500 worth of equipment plus there’s also £100 worth of equipment for the lucky runner-up. Located in the heart of Chelmsford city centre, the Meadows offers visitors a great shopping experience, they’ll find unique independent retailers alongside favourite national brands such as Fat Face, Warehouse, BHS and Giraffe. And not forgetting something for the kids as the Odeon cinema is located opposite. Make sure your child’s school is nominated to be part of the Meadows Shop for Schools to be in with a chance of winning! For further details visit the Meadows website www.themeadows.co.uk or find them on Facebook.

Spring Flowers

Try filling a variety of glasses and jars with water and a drop of food colouring, pop a flower in each and you have a lovely bright display. Arrange your flowers in a vase and place inside a larger vase. Use whatever you like to fill the gap between vases. For example; for Easter you could use coloured eggs, or sweets. You can do this at any time of year using anything that takes your fancy or suits your theme.

Delicious salads

As it starts to warm up (hopefully) it’s lovely to make some fresh and tasty salads. Our favourite is Greek salad made with cherry tomatoes, cucumber, olives, feta cheese and a dill and garlic dressing or for a more traditional recipe, drizzle the salad with olive oil, white wine vinegar and sprinkle with some oregano. Delicious on it’s own and great as a side dish.

Cupcakes

Easter is a great time for having fun with cupcake decorating. Have a look on the internet for some great ideas. We particularly liked these eggs hiding in the grass. However, you may need be a bit handier with an icing bag! Or the sheep made from sticking mini marshmallows to butter icing on a cupcake of your choice Yummy. We hope you find these ideas fun and do let us know if you make any by emailing office@kidaround.biz with some pictures. Don’t be scared or upset if they don’t come out like the images just enjoy! www.kidaround.biz • Spring 15 • North Essex • 9

Active Kids PGL Adventure Holidays are so much more than just a holiday...

In so many ways, their holidays are a very special kind of fun. For a start, they’re adventures that are just for children. They can choose from a huge range of holidays at centres across the UK and France, so there’s a perfect holiday for every child. They get to try amazing activities and laugh with new friends and old, in the place that matters most – the great outdoors. For most, it’s their first time staying away from home and that’s what makes PGL experiences special too. In fact, it’s amazing what children can achieve when they challenge themselves. PGL understand that taking that first step as a parent can be daunting but they believe the rewards are worth it. That’s why they believe ‘adventure matters’ and why they would love you and your children more than ever to join the adventure in 2015. PGL holidays are all about your child gaining independence, confidence and meeting new people. Designed specifically for 7-17 year olds with options available in the UK and France. Parents of children at PGL really appreciate the ways in which they help children to stand on their own two feet, to explore their own personalities and to learn the social and practical skills fundamental to enjoying life better at every age – like making new friends and playing as a team. They enable children to have fun, explore and experience adventure as children are meant to – outside, naturally, within a safe environment. Part of the joy of a PGL holiday is the opportunity to be involved in lots of exciting, energetic activities your child may be unfamiliar with. Although there is no real danger attached to them, children gain great confidence from being involved in them, and often say the activities they found the scariest were the ones they really enjoyed the best! Rest assured that your child will settle in fast and will soon be busy having new experiences and making new friends. Safe in this knowledge, you can also enjoy the time your child is away and simply look forward to the many stories they’ll have on their return. Since 1957, over 8,000,000 children and parents have discovered what makes PGL the UK’s no.1 for children’s adventure and activity holidays. This year they hope you will too. With all activities, tuition, meals and accommodation included, and more choice than ever before including everything from birthday parties to 2, 3, 4 and 7 night breaks, their holidays offer incredible value for money. Plus their introductory* holidays start from only £99 per child. Visit the PGL Adventure Holidays website on www.pgl.co.uk/holidays to find more and to book.

Feedback from Claire and Jack, 8 months “The facilities are excellent and the changing rooms are always calm and clean which helps to make the overall experience enjoyable. Our instructor has been fabulous and Jack thoroughly enjoys his lessons. He is a cautious baby who can find new experiences overwhelming but the pace and personal 1:1 time with Pauline has resulted in him enjoying every moment of his lessons and he is becoming more confident in the water. I am delighted with his progress and can’t wait to see him develop further. Jo Jingles sessions are a weekly, fun, adult/child interactive, musical experience. It is widely acknowledged that singing with children and encouraging ‘active music making’ can aid a child’s development in many key areas other than just musical ability. Research is even suggesting that the earlier music is introduced to a child the more potential that child will have for learning in the future. Jo Jingles provides fun, interactive, music and movement sessions for babies and children aged 3 months to 5 years. Their programmes are carefully developed to be age appropriate, structured and work in-line with the Early Years Foundation Stage. Jo Jingles is now an international organisation, with thousands of children attending weekly sessions. Children instinctively move when they hear music and physical movement is important for brain development. It has also been shown in various studies that memory of words is further enhanced by physical movement. Nursery rhymes, songs and rhythm can be vital to a child’s speech and numerical dexterity. Themed Jo Jingles sessions include time for imagination and curiosity, small classes mean little personalities are nurtured, and so confidence grows. With a wide range of instruments and props they stimulate looking and listening, keeping children engaged throughout. They run all sessions in a safe secure environment. Quality time at Jo Jingles for parent/ carer and child together, is a rewarding experience both educationally and emotionally. Jo Jingles feel very privileged that thousands of children are enjoying and benefitting from their sessions every week. 25 Year Anniversary For Debbie Millar School Of Dance

Debbie Millar’s first dance school was based in Suffolk and was established almost forty years ago. However, 2015 marks the 25th anniversary of the Debbie Millar School of Dance teaching in the Ardleigh/Lawford area. The school’s annual dance show, which raises money for various charities, will celebrate this “silver” milestone with some very special routines and performances. The show will take place at the West Cliff Theatre in Clacton over the first weekend in May. Every pupil in the school is always invited to take part in the show but for this year Debbie would like as many former pupils as possible to participate as well. Anyone who is interested should contact Debbie via email on debbie@debbiemillar.co.uk

A Fun-filled Holiday For All The Family

Steam Train Rides At Poplar Miniature Railway

Celebrating its first year of operations at Easter, the Poplar Miniature Railway at Poplar Nurseries in Marks Tey has proved to be a smash hit with parents and kids alike. Designed from the outset to appeal to parents with young children, real coal powered steam engines pull trains through the delightful landscaped gardens, past such endearingly named features as Orchard Curve, Folly Bank and Cottage Crossing. The children love to look out for the animals along the route, including the giraffe, crocodile, bear and cow, although new animals regularly turn up to see the train pass by. Whilst the little ones enjoy the railway and play area, parents can relax and enjoy the justifiably popular Thyme Out restaurant and other attractions at the garden centre. Last year 45,000 people discovered the railway for the first time and for 2015 the railway has a new steam engine, Alice, joining Poppy and Yeo pulling even longer trains around the gardens. There will also be a new steam engine viewing area to keep all generations of Thomas fans happy. The railway is open every weekend and school holidays this year except for Easter Sunday. The Nursery holds regular children’s activities, including the free to enter Easter Egg Hunt, where every child receives a free Easter gift. This runs from Saturday 28th March until Sunday 12th April. Under fours travel free when accompanied by a fare paying person and discount cards are available all year round. If you are looking for somewhere new to take the tribe, and have not yet met Poppy, Yeo or Alice, go along to Poplar and find out what all the fuss is about. The ‘Diamond Model’ School

Mrs Katherine Jeffrey, Principal, New Hall School In the national press recently, Mr Alun Jones, president of the Girls’ Schools Association, was quoted claiming that “every state school should consider introducing the diamond model and experiment with teaching boys and girls separately.” New Hall School in Chelmsford, Essex, has operated this unusual ‘diamond model’ structure since 2005. The move was pioneering for a school of this type and New Hall has unequivocally proven its merit. The diamond model provides the best of both worlds: the benefits of a co-educational environment beginning when they join the Preparatory School in Pre-Reception and for Sixth Form, together with the advantages of girls and boys being taught separately at Key Stages 3 and 4. The provision of single-sex education during adolescence enables students to grow in confidence, whilst enjoying an education that is specifically tailored and that recognises the different ways in which boys and girls learn. Over the past decade, the school roll at New Hall has increased from 580 students to over 1,100 today. With the introduction of boys to a formerly all-girls school when the diamond model was established, there have been some changes at New Hall but all have been undoubtedly positive. The enormous energy and emphasis on team sports that came with the arrival of the boys has transformed the sporting life of the school. Girls soon noticed the comradeship, team spirit, and regional/national success of the boys in rugby, cricket and tennis resulting in the meteoric rise of girls’ sports team, with regional/ national successes in a range of sports such as hockey, swimming, athletics and riding. In other areas, too, girls have become more competitive, without this changing the overall community ethos of the school. A number of new facilities have been provided, with the opening of two boarding houses for boys, a technology centre, a fitness suite and changing rooms, a new classroom block, extensive sports pitches, cricket wickets and indoor cricket facilities, and additional computer suites. Academic standards have continued to go from strength to strength since the introduction of the diamond model. In 2014, the largest ever cohort of New Hall students celebrated outstanding GCSE results, with 50% of students achieving A*-A grades and 80% achieving A*-B grades. Perhaps most notably, boys and girls achieved near identical results at the A*-A grade, in contrast to the national figure which has seen girls outperform boys at the top end by 10%. New Hall students receive offers to study at top universities. This year, this included four offers to read highly competitive subjects (Medicine, History and Classics) at Oxford and Cambridge Universities, with a 100% success rate for Year 13 Cambridge applicants. The diamond model of education has indisputably yielded great success in Essex. To book your place for the open day on Saturday 2 May 9am - 12pm visit www.newhallschool/openmorning or to arrange a visit to suit you, please call 01245 236098 www.newhallschool.co.uk

Within the nursery, your child will play and learn in small groups, with plenty of individual attention from fully-qualified staff, and will have access to a wide range of facilities. The nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage and all their staff are qualified and experienced in providing learning opportunities for children to enhance their development through the 7 areas of learning. Colchester High School achieves outstanding academic results thanks to the small class sizes, experienced and professional teachers, and strong pastoral support. The school has a strong focus on the individual child and achievement of his or her academic potential whilst also becoming a happy, confident, responsible and caring member of the school. The school also prides itself on providing a strong sense of continuity and whole school community. The Nursery and Lower School provide a very friendly and fun environment from which the younger children are able to observe the activities of the Seniors. The Senior School pupils have their own lesson and leisure time areas but are conscious of, and respect, the younger pupils. All children have use of the ICT suites, Music Rooms, Dance Studio and the Drama Room. For more information or to arrange a visit, please visit www.colchesterhighschool.co.uk or contact admissions on 01206 217116.

Oxford House School

“Labore confecto Gaudentes”. Joy in Achievement is the school motto..

Oxford House is a traditional Nursery and Preparatory School for girls and boys aged two and a half to eleven years. Founded in 1959, this intimate and exclusive school offers every child a complete education that puts a high emphasis on traditional values and the child centred learning of the Montessori teaching methods. The school encourages high standards in behaviour and manners as well as in academic achievement. Oxford House prides itself in achieving a high success rate in both independent and state selective schools, and during the final years pupils undergo studies geared to prepare them for external scholarship and 11+ examinations. The school aims to understand and develop the potential which all children possess and to send them on to senior schools as literate, numerate, well-mannered and happy individuals. The broad curriculum is enriched by instilling a love for literature, modern languages, music and dance. Music is a strength and optional instrumental tuition is offered. Oxford House teachers pride themselves on producing confident and articulate children. There is a mutual respect between teachers and pupils which is demonstrated by the kind and polite way those at Oxford House treat each other. Healthy eating and exercise also play an important role, with freshly prepared vegetarian meals served daily. A sensible balance of PE and sports allows swimming all year round with hockey, tag rugby, football and athletics in season. Oxford House School, 2-4 Lexden Road, Colchester, CO3 3NE. Education

The internet has changed all of our lives, particularly our children’s. For parents and carers this opens up a whole new world of things to be aware of. For many of us, this can all be a bit too much. You might be struggling to keep up with the things your child is doing online, you might wonder whether what they are doing is safe, and you might also be thinking how can I be as good a parent online as I am offline? Even if the only search engine you use is a pair of binoculars, do not despair.. Below are some helpful tips on what you can do: • Talk to your child about what they’re up to online. Be a part of their online life; involve the whole family and show an interest. Find out what sites they visit and what they love about them, if they know you understand they are more likely to come to you if they have any problems. • Watch Thinkuknow films and cartoons with your child. The Thinkuknow site has films, games and advice for children from five all the way to 16. • Encourage your child to go online and explore! There is a wealth of age-appropriate sites online for your children. Encourage them to use sites which are fun, educational and that will help them to develop online skills. • Keep up-to-date with your child’s development online. Children grow up fast and they will be growing in confidence and learning new skills daily. It’s important that as your child learns more, so do you. • Set boundaries in the online world just as you would in the real world. Think about what they might see, what they share, who they talk to and how long they spend online. It is important to discuss boundaries at a young age to develop the tools and skills children need to enjoy their time online. • Keep all equipment that connects to the internet in a family space. For children of this age, it is important to keep internet use in family areas so you can see the sites your child is using and be there for them if they stumble across something they don’t want to see. • Know what connects to the internet and how. Nowadays even the TV connects to the internet. Make sure you’re aware of which devices that your child uses connect to the internet, such as their phone or games console. Also, find out how they are accessing the internet – is it your connection, or a neighbour’s wifi? This will affect whether the safety setting you set are being applied. • Use parental controls on devices that link to the internet, such as the TV, laptops, computers, games consoles and mobile phones. Parental controls are not just about locking and blocking, they are a tool to help you set appropriate boundaries as your child grows and develops. They are not the answer to your child’s online safety, but they are a good start and they are not as difficult to install as you might think. Service providers are working hard to make them simple, effective and user friendly. Find your service provider and learn how to set your controls This information was taken from www.thinkuknow.co.uk a fantastic site full of information and resources to help keep you & your family safe online.

Childcare

Preparing your child for starting nursery or pre-school For many parents, their child starting nursery or pre-school will be the first time they have been apart. This can be a daunting prospect for both; leaving your little one with strangers is not an easy thing to do no matter how ready you feel he or she is for a new challenge. However, there are things you can do to prepare yourself and your child for the transition. Once you have chosen your nursery or pre-school you will have some idea of the policies and settling in procedures for that particular setting. This may not necessarily be the one closest to your home, but the one that you felt most comfortable in when you looked round. Ask about those when you go to look round and take your child with you as this will be his or her first experience of the new environment and will give you a valuable insight into how he or she responds to what is on offer. Some children will be keen to join in without encouragement while others will want to watch from a safe distance on mummy’s or daddy’s lap. Most settings will offer accompanied visits before a child’s official start date and once you have enrolled your child, will inform you of your child’s key person and agree dates with you for preliminary visits. Some settings will give you a visual timetable to share with your child between visits. This will include photographs of all the activities your child is likely to experience whilst at nursery and also some information about your child’s key person so that you can refer to her/him by name when sharing it with your child. Often the hardest part is saying goodbye to mummy or daddy. You can support your child by developing a routine; using the same words and gestures each time you leave, so your child knows that you will be back because you always are when you say goodbye in this way. No matter how anxious you may feel when you first leave, it is important that you remain positive and encouraging even if they are tearful. Taking your child to music groups or parent and toddler groups will encourage sociability and give them experience of playing alongside or with other children and sharing toys. Take a step back and watch how your child engages. Children are often more independent and capable than parents realise. Read books to your child about starting nursery or pre-school or play ‘nurseries’ at home using all those soft toys as the pretend children. If you know someone who already attends your chosen setting, invite them round for a play date. A familiar face will be encouraging. Anxious parents often think that one nursery session a week will be the least traumatic way of making the transition, but a week is a long time between visits and a long time to build anxiety if your child is struggling. For this reason, many settings insist on a minimum of two sessions. Try to avoid saying things like ‘There is nothing to be afraid of’ or ‘You are going to have a brilliant time’. Instead focus on what your child is actually going to be doing, using the information the setting has given you. Remember the people who are working with pre-school children are doing so because they have a passion for the age group. They should be knowledgeable, sensitive and empathetic and will want your child to be happy and settled in the nursery environment. They will do their best for your child. Book reviews by local children The Grindle Witch by B. J. Myers RRP £10.99 Orion Children’s Books The Grindle Witch is one of the best books I have ever read! The story is very imaginative, descriptive and intense. It is about a boy called Jack Jolly and his friends Paddy and Leila living in the village of Grindle. The friends work together to try to defeat the evil Grindle Witch. I think this book is suitable for children aged 10 years and older. Reviewed by Jacob Marshall Age 10

Hurricane Betsey by Malorie Blackman RRP £5.99 Random House There are four mini stories in this book. I like the first one best of all.The story was about a young girl called Betsey and she insists things are hers just because they are lying around. But they are there for a reason. The characters are Betsey, Prince (the dog), Sherena, Desmond, Grandma Liz, mum and uncle George. My favourite part is when uncle George taught Betsey a lesson not to take things that are not yours. He says “Oh! I found this girl sitting here it has got nobody’s name on her! So she is mine!” I rate this book 3 and a half stars out of 5. Reviewed by Henry Winton aged 8

Wooley & Tig Finger Puppet Book by James Brian RRP £6.99 Random House The pages are very thick and sturdy so she cannot break it no matter much she insists on dragging it around with her. She loves Woolly and so doesn’t put this down and has now tried to start counting. Only to 3 but it’s a start. I love the fact the pages can also be wiped clean and won’t be destroyed by spilt food and drink. At the moment she has it out all day as it doesn’t get her off to sleep because she gets far too excited but this is probably due to her age. As she grows she will understand more of the what is being said and will hopefully become a bed-time favourite. I personally loved the simple poetic rhymes and we will continue to read this to Ashlea for a long time yet. Reviewed by Ashlea Read and her mum

Stinkbomb and Ketchup-Face and the Quest for the Magic Porcupine. By John Dougherty RRP £5.99 Oxford University Press I liked this book a lot. I hadn’t read any of their other books but this didn’t matter and I’m going to definitely read the next one. It’s not like any other book I have read. I thought it was very funny butsometimes a little confusing. This didn’t stop me from enjoying it. All the characters were entertaining, even my big brother age 11 and my mumliked reading it too. I give it 4/5 Reviewed by Deven Brew

Polly & the Puffin by Jenny Colgan RRP: £5.99 LB books for kids ‘Mummy reads the book to me and my brother, Rhys, every night before bed. My favourite bit was when Polly follows the feathers to the top of the Lighthouse rocks and finds Neil and his friend in their nest. I also liked the bit where Polly took care of Neil after he crashed into her house during the storm. The funniest bit was when Polly offered him her Lollipop. Reviewed by Erin Littlefield aged 4

Ten Terrible Dinosaurs by Paul Strickland RRP £6.99 Random House We really enjoyed reading this book. The illustrations are lovely and bright and it is written in a pacy verse. We counted the dinosaurs backwards from 10 to 1 together as we read and much fun was had from shouting out the next number each time! Suitable from around 12 months this is both great fun and an excellent counting aid. Brilliant. Reviewed by Samantha Kilpatrick (Mum) and Abbie, age 2.

One for the adults Summer at Little Beach Street Bakery by Jenny Colgan RRP: £7.99 www.jennycolgan.com/books/ This book is fabulous and captures the imagination so sincerely. Each detail of landscape is portrayed so vividly and every character is described in such a way, you can picture them as if youv’e met them in real life. With twists, turns, surprises and mini adventures along the way, every chapter is gripping and I could barely put it down. Having not discovered Jenny Colgan until now, I am hooked and will definitely be reading more of her books.’ Reviewed by Vicky Littlefield aged 3
