Whilst working on this issue, the news has been announced about the Queen Elizabeth II's death, we have therefore shown our respect by placing a black banner around the cover of this issue. We have also included The Demise of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on page 8, giving you information on how you can pay your respects and how to get involved. With this in mind, we have also got advice on how to talk to your child about death on page 10 which we hope helps.

Well, another summer holidays done, they always leave me feeling confused. I love my children but 6 weeks always feels very long to organise, entertain and work - sometimes wishing the days away. But, then it's over, they are back at school and I'm left at home missing them....crazy!

Now kids are back and hopefully settled in to their new class or school, we can start planning what's next, whether you are looking at changing schools, enrolling your child in school or looking for tutoring, we have what you need to know on page 12.

Use the table below for a rough guide of how much sleep your child should be getting. There is no set rules on this, it is purely guidance.

• All advise suggests to stop children on gadgets and TV 1-hour before bedtime, personally, this has not made any difference to my own child and he sleeps well after being exposed. However, you may want to try it and see?

• Test the mattress, if it's uncomfortable to you, then it's probably the same for your child. If buying a new mattress isn't within your budget, you can look at mattress toppers or a duvet on top for extra padding. You can also look for second hand, some people have nearly new ones used in guest bedrooms that they sell, facebook market place is good for items like this.

• Baths can be a great time for your child to relax and there are some lovely lavender bubble baths you can buy to help.

Line dry clothes

It’s worth buying some dryer balls which help separate clothes in a drying cycle, allowing more air

However, newer washing machines do have half load settings. This tells the machine there are less clothes and therefore less water is used.

How to cut the costs of laundry:

Make sure you’re washing full loads

Clean the dryer filter

optionA

An obvious way to save money on laundry is to line dry clothes. If the weather forecast is rain then you can always air dry your clothes inside on a drying rack. Just be sure to space out the clothes so they dry properly.

It’s easy to neglect the dryer filter, but a regular clean will help your dryer to work more efficiently and safely.

Put your wash on at off-peak times

If you have a money saving tip or a cleaning hack you would like to share, feel free to email me here

Putting too many clothes in the dryer means that they will take more time to dry and you’ll need to have it on for longer resulting in an increased use of energy so try not to fill the dryer up to the brim.

See if your machine has a quick wash

If you can, try to hold off putting the washing machine on until you have enough laundry for a full load. Your machine will use the same amount of energy no matter how many clothes are in there so you’re better off waiting until the laundry builds up a bit.

Try to put your laundry loads on at off-peak times which tend to be early in the mornings or late at night. This tends to be when energy prices are lower as most people aren’t using energy at this time.

With the rising costs of energy, see these tips on how you can reduce the cost of doing you washing.

Choosing the right words to describe death to a child.

10 Back to Issue 22 • www.kidaround.biz TO ADVERTISE, CALL 07557 053044 OR EMAIL SALES@KIDAROUND.BIZ

“Simple facts and exact phrasing are best. If someone has died of cancer or a heart attack then I would use those terms and then break them down into concepts that the child understands. All of us die eventually because our hearts stop pumping and then our brain doesn’t get enough oxygen, so I think if you’re lost for words you can just stick to those very basic facts.”

Dr Marianne Trent suggests:

‘Death’ and ‘dead’ are not new words for children—they may see dead creatures in the garden or dead flowers—what’s important is to help them make the association that these words can refer to people too. Avoid euphemisms such as ‘a better place’, or saying that the person is ‘sleeping’ or ‘lost’ as this can be confusing or even frightening to children. Although it can be tempting to use these softer descriptions of death, it’s important to use simple and direct language that is appropriate to their age and level of understanding.

With the death of Queen Elizabeth II being a dominate subject on the TV, at schools and within homes, it may raise concern and questions by young children. May be you've had a bereavement of a loved-one recently and just don't know how to deal with the situation or know how to talk to your child/children about it. With this in mind, we have turned to some experts for advice. What is the best way to tell a child about death?

Children need simple and logical information when someone has died to help them better understand what has happened. You don’t have to over-explain the details, but remember to be clear, as children will fill in the blanks with their imagination, which is often far from the reality of the situation. Encourage them to share their thoughts; this may be a completely new topic for them, so check what they understand it to mean first. You don’t have to wait until someone in the child’s life has passed away to bring up death.

Dr Marianne Trent, Clinical Psychologist and author at Good Thinking Psychology, says: “Death needn’t be scary. I’d just stick to facts that can be built on logically as the child grows up. Death is an unavoidable consequence of life and I try to include aspects of it in day-to-day life. If you’re out and about and you see a dead bird or animal, I would talk about it in simple terms. This can be helpful if a sudden death occurs because the child then already has a reference point for death existing. Give the child lots of opportunities to ask questions because I’m confident that they will have many!”

https://www.childbereavementuk.org/Childhttps://childhoodbereavementnetwork.org.uk/NetworkBereavementUK

The way children understand and react to death will vary with age. Younger children may revert to immature behaviours or have outbursts, whereas school-age children may have difficulty concentrating or experience feelings of sadness, anger or guilt. Children don’t always vocalise their feelings, so watch how they act and make sure to check in with them. The most likely response for all children, however, is to have lots of questions.

• Trouble sleeping, nightmares

Article by Memorials of Distinction and advice given by Dr Mariant Trent, Clinical Psychologist author at Good Thinking Psychology and Carole Henderson, Grief UK.

A few of the behaviours that can be the result of unresolved or unacknowledged grief are:

• Difficulty concentrating

Child Bereavement

Dr Marianne Trent says, “Do be prepared for the questions and for the fact that they might catch you off guard.” She also adds, “Please don’t be afraid of showing your emotions in front of your children. Children will also make sense of death and dying by looking at their own most important people, this might include asking questions about whether you or they or someone else will die.”

It’s normal for children to experience a wide range of emotions in response to death, but it’s important that parents recognise when a child is responding normally or when they may need professional help.

• Frequent absence from school

How do children react when you tell them about death?

• Reduced participation or interest in class

• Angry outbursts, violence

Perhaps you are worried about telling a child a loved one has passed away. Or you may be concerned that you will terrify them or say something inappropriate. You might be having trouble dealing with your own emotions, so finding it difficult to help the child. Alternatively, you may feel compelled to keep quiet in order to protect them. If you're feeling this way, remember that it's common to find conversations like these challenging. Websites for additional support:

Carole Henderson, Managing Director at Grief UK said: “Children may allow themselves to be distracted for a time, but the grief does not go away. It often manifests in other areas, causing serious problems in school and at home.'

Winston’s Wish https://www.winstonswish.org/

Headmaster Jason Whiskerd explains: “However large or small a school is, it is really important that every child feels that they are known and that they are valued. Although the Form Teachers play a significant role in caring for their class, it is the small, regular interactions between all staff and pupils that make Brentwood such a welcoming and friendly “Weschool.make a point of greeting the children at the gate each morning, chatting to them in the playground at break times. We listen to what the children tell us about their experiences at school and respond accordingly. We have expanded our Pastoral team, with an additional Pastoral Mentor; we’ve also introduced Heads of Year which allows more scope for year teams to get to know their pupils”

“Over the past three years we have restructured our Senior Leadership Team to ensure a more effective linemanagement structure; introduced a Middle Leadership development scheme to support the ‘engine room’ of the school; and expanded our research and development programme, with every teacher undertaking an individualised project to help develop their practice.

Following three years of growth, Brentwood Preparatory School has reached its sweet spot achieving the optimum balance between pupil numbers and outstanding facilities. The new development also won a coveted 2022 RIBA East Award which celebrates great architecture across the UK.

The planned growth of the Middleton Hall Lane Prep School enables Brentwood to offer a breadth and depth of academic courses and cocurricular programmes that few schools in the country can match while maintaining that small school feel.

The impressive Prep development includes a brand new assembly and dining hall, a three storey classroom block and reception area, and three interconnecting Foundation (Nursery) rooms, which overlook a bespoke and innovative play space. The project cements a 15-year relationship between Brentwood School and award-winning architects, Cottrell and Vermeulen Architecture.

27th July 2022: Brentwood Preparatory School’s award-winning, multimillion pound development not only provides the Prep with the kind of learning spaces that most schools can only dream of, it also opens up a world of opportunities for its young pupils.

Small School Feel, Big School Opportunities

Mr Whiskerd continued: “The growth of the Prep School was well planned and enables Brentwood to offer a breadth and depth of academic courses and co-curricular programmes that few schools in the country can match. This growth has been supported by an expansion of our facilities (most obviously the new Prep buildings but also in our future plans for the site, which will form part of our vision and strategy communications, next year) and staffing, to ensure that class sizes remain small and that we continue to offer individual and personalised care and provision.

“We’ve also added two new Houses so that more pupils than ever before have opportunities to represent their House in our vibrant House programme. Our co-curricular programme now offers even more opportunities to the children and we are extremely proud that every child has had the opportunity to represent the school in the major sports. Our academic enrichment programme now takes place within the timetable so that every child has access to a rich and varied programme. This was not the case before we expanded the roll and I know that the children are the main beneficiaries of this approach.

“And finally, whilst we have grown as a school, we have also reduced the pupil to staff ratio quite significantly over time. This really has helped in terms of us knowing all of the children and in maintaining that personal and individualised experience that is so important.”

At Oxford House School, Nursery children make excellent progress in their learning, achieve high standards of work and leave the school as highly confident and articulate children. The majority of our pupils progress onto our highly sought-after local grammar schools.
