FIVE WAYS TO SPEND QUALITY TIME WITH YOUR GRANDCHILDREN Help children develop communication, language and social skills by spending quality time together There is nothing more precious than spending quality time with your grandchildren, especially since the last 18 months have resulted in many families having limited time or opportunity to do so. Children grow up so quickly so it is important to spend every moment you can learning from each other and bonding through activities which you both enjoy. According to new research from Play Like Mum, 72% of grandparents babysit their grandkids on a weekly basis and activities such as baking together and participating in role-playing games are a fantastic way to help children develop their skills, and bond together with their grandparents. Children will find themselves expressing themselves and becoming more confident whilst learning vital skills without even realising when spending time with their grandparents, such as communication, language and social skills, all of which will aid them in later life. Andrew Coplestone, founder of Play Like Mum, who sell a range of high-quality and innovative dolls prams, shares his insights on how grandparents and grandchildren can enjoy and spend quality time together: Enjoy Messy Play Picasso said ‘Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.’ So why not enjoy getting creative with your own mini-Picasso’s of art. Grab some paint and glue and make some master pieces together. How about asking grandchildren to paint a portrait of you or make a collage out of some old magazines you have lying around. Who cares if you get messy whilst finger painting, clothes can get washed but those memories of you getting creative with your grandchildren will last forever. Cook Up a Feast Cooking or baking with your grandchildren is a great way to progress their academic skills as they measure ingredients and read through the recipes – and it is also a great way to pass down vital life skills too. Learning to cook nutritional meals together is an ideal way to instil healthy habits in your grandchildren while passing down your 10 •October 21 • www.kidaround.biz

favourite recipes. It is also a heart-warming way to teach children about their culture and the history of their family in the food you eat and enjoy together. Enjoy Role-playing Games Together Role-play is one of the most effective ways for children to develop their skills and is a great way to encourage communication between grandparents and grandchildren. Role-playing allows children to play with more traditional toys such as dolls and dolls prams, enabling children to lead the playtime and cook up fun and exciting scenarios to act out. At Play Like Mum, we have a range of timeless dolls prams catering to children of all ages which create imaginative ways for children to play. Grandparents will often be delighted to see Grandchildren mimic their actions during games. Role playing also helps grandparents to identify any problems their little ones may be having and address them sooner. Head Outdoors Want to deter your grandchildren away from digital screens? Why not encourage them to take their play outside! No matter the weather, all you need to do is grab your waterproof, wrap up warm and explore the great outdoors. Teach children about the different trees they might see on a walk together or count how many pinecones you can collect as you stroll through nature. Children can bring their favourite toys along, in bags or in a dolls pram so everyone can get in on the fun. Set Up a Movie Night Want to wind down with your grandchildren after a busy day but still enjoy quality time together – why not set up your own home movie night? Put on a film from your childhood that they may not have seen with the latest releases, such as The Wizard of Oz or Singing in The Rain and watch them discover cinematic magic. To make it extra special, why not set up a special movie den in the living room with fairy lights and some extra special snacks, then curl up together and enjoy. As you can see there are many ways to spend quality time with your grandchildren and the suggestions above are just the start. The Daisy Chain’s collection of dolls’ prams and pushchairs create imaginative ways for children to play which is an essential part of every child’s development so why not see how they can help your child blossom and grow.

Supernanny Jo Frost’s Best Tips on Getting Your Children to Help Out More We all need to get our errands done and the difference between having a good experience and not when kids are involved is exactly how much we get them involved. We all know what it’s like being home with the little ones and needing to get the laundry done, with your toddler all too eager to prize you away to do something else. Follow the advice of Supernanny Jo Frost to help stay on top of this and make sure your kids are involved as much as they can be. It is equally important for your children to understand that they also have a responsibility to play a part in living together as a family. First – Assess how you can get your children involved: • Look at the task at hand and work out how your children can help. Look for tasks which will be achievable for them and also make your life easier. For example, separating the socks from the vests, taking out the food from the shopping bags, tidying up the bath toys as getting out of the bath. • Be mindful to keep the chores short and sweet depending on the age of the child. For younger children: • For younger children, having them match up socks together is a great early educational game as well as allowing you

DON’T FORGET TO MENTION US WHEN CALLING

to achieve your task of folding the laundry. It’s a win win! The supermarket shop is a classic example of getting your children to know their food and simultaneously avoiding the public tantrums by keeping kids occupied. Have them cross off items on the shopping list as you go along and direct you to items that are still left to buy. For older children: • For older children, give them an actual task to complete, or a daily job which is solely their responsibility. • This can range from peeling vegetables, setting the table, actually putting the clothes away,or being your second pair of hands while you work on any other chores around the house. • Have them take part in family fly-bys before you go to bed: straighten out the sofa cushions, fold the blankies and make good for the next day. Tidy away remote control units and tidy newspapers and magazines, either placing them to one side for the recycling bin or stowing them in a stand or basket. Reward them! • Compliment the efforts of this teamwork and how it makes you feel. Expressing your gratitude is extremely rewarding for any child to hear how they have been of help to you. This also encourages the willingness to help again. • When the job is done feel free to reward your little ones. If they have a behaviour chart give them a star, or give them an incentive to work towards. You should always make a point to show them the positive end result – all hands lead to a job well done! •

Finding a school to suit your child Before you choose which schools to apply to, find out as much as you can so that you can make an informed decision. Ask yourself what you and your child need from a school and start gathering information early. Getting information about schools Once you know which schools are near you, get as much information as you can about them. This will give you a better idea of which schools might suit your child most. For example, you might like to: • visit the schools • read the schools' prospectuses and study their admissions criteria • read the schools' most recent inspection reports • Inspection Reports (external link opens in a new window / tab) Guide for parents If you want your child to go to a certain school, you can read what is needed for them to be admitted to the school such as: • application process and deadlines • number of pupils at the school and how popular the school was in recent years • how places will be allocated if too many children apply the admissions criteria You should also read the leaflet "The Transfer Process to postprimary school: Advice for Parents of Children in Primary Six". This explains the post-primary transfer process. Parents of children in Year 6 will receive the Advice for Parents leaflet in January. The Advice for Parents leaflet explains: • what you can do to help your child transfer to postprimary school • what things you can think about in choosing a school for your child • how to complete your child's application (the Transfer Form) to post-primary school Information about individual schools can change from year to year. You should make sure you get up-to-date information about your preferred schools. Different types of schools Once you have found some local schools that might suit your child, draw up a shortlist. Before you apply, think about your child's personality and their needs. Types of school • If your child needs special attention • If your child is very bright, shows particular patterns of behaviour or has special needs, it's important to find a school that will be able to give them the right support. • Supporting gifted and talented children • Special educational needs • If your child has specific interests Visit the school If you think a school may suit your child, visit the school. Most schools have open days or evenings providing a good opportunity to see around, meet staff and have a look at children's work. While you are there ask yourself: • how welcoming the school feels and whether you are impressed by the children's work on display • if the school is well equipped - find out where pupils do sport and what IT facilities are available • how your child will get to school – think about safe routes, transport and the length of the journey • whether the school has a Parent Teacher Association - this may be able to give you more information School prospectuses Every post-primary school has a prospectus. DON’T FORGET TO MENTION US WHEN CALLING

EDUCATION This is a booklet that: • provides details about the school and the education opportunities it can provide for your child • has information about the subject choices available at the school, public examination results, the numbers of applications received and the number of places granted in past years • Prospectuses are normally published on schools' websites and are also available free from schools. You should get prospectuses from all the schools you are considering by checking their websites or by contacting those schools directly. School Inspection Reports You might also like to read the latest individual school inspection reports which can be found on the Ofsted website. Home to school transport How to transport your child to school may be a reason for you choose certain schools. Free transport is arranged if: • the school is further than two miles from their home (three miles for post-primary schools) • were unsuccessful in getting a place at all schools of the same category within that two mile limit (three miles for post-primary schools) The category of school your child goes to also affects if your child will be able to get home to school transport support. The types of suitable schools are: • controlled or other voluntary • Catholic Maintained • integrated (including controlled integrated) • Irish-medium • denominational (Catholic) grammar (post-primary only) • non-denominational grammar (post-primary only) The grammar stream of a school recognised by the Department of Education as bi-lateral shall be treated as a grammar school and the secondary stream as a post primary (secondary) school when getting transport support. Other information about a school When you're choosing a school for your child, you should also consider: • whether a school uses a system of streaming (placing children in classes based on their ability) and how this operates within the school • public examinations taken at schools - for example GCSEs and success levels • schools’ policies on homework, uniform, discipline • school fees if relevant, and other extra costs for example uniforms, sports equipment • school support to pupils who can't keep up with their class in specific subjects This information was taken from www.nidirect.gov.uk

Admission Dates: Primary School: You can apply for a September 2022 primary (Reception) school place between 8 November 2021 and 15 January 2022. Offers of places will be sent on 19 April 2022

Beauty and the Beast - The enchanting new family pantomime will run from Friday 26 November 2021 until Monday 3 January 2022 at the Civic Theatre.

In all the decades of staging pantomimes here in Chelmsford, Beauty and the Beast has never been produced at the Civic and we are so excited for it’s debut this year in association with our long running partners, One From The Heart. Taking audiences back to the traditional French story the tale starts with a young Prince. Ten years ago, the Prince would regularly hold lavish and elegant parties at his grand castle. On a treacherous night, an old lady knocked on the magnificent palace doors for shelter. The Prince, selfish and unkind, turned the woman away and sent her back into the bitter storm. Before his eyes she turned into a beautiful enchantress and cast a spell on the castle, transforming the Prince into a terrifying Beast and his rather fabulous personal stylist Mizzo into his equally fabulous magic mirror. All that can reverse the spell is for the Beast to find love and have his love returned by another before his 30th birthday. If he can’t achieve this by the time the decade has passed, the Beast will die. Feeling helpless with the deadline fast approaching and only his magic mirror to keep him company, the Beast resigns himself to his inevitable demise. In a nearby village the kind and spirited Belle spends her days dreaming of an adventurous new life. Her loving father, the inventor Monsieur Labonté, would do anything to make his daughter happy but is struggling to pay the bills due to their greedy landlord increasing the rent. Seeing both father and daughter suffering, the wicked landlord offers to solve all their money woes in exchange for Belle’s hand in marriage. Determined to make enough money to free them from this evil plan, Monsieur Labonté is tricked into going into the haunted forest to make his fortune. When he doesn’t return, a worried but brave Belle heads into the forest to investigate and stumbles across an enchanted castle, a figure who hides in the shadows, and an adventure beyond her wildest dreams. Throw in some friendly villagers, a larger-than-life dame and a best friend to help save the day and you have the perfect components for a panto that’ll entertain the whole family this Christmas! This amazing story of love and transformation will have absolutely everything audiences have come to expect from a traditional Civic pantomime including fantastic sets, bewitching costumes, roof-raising songs and heaps of magic. To book your tickets, visit Chelmsford.gov.uk/theatres, call 01245 606505 or visit us in person; Civic Theatre, Fairfield Road, Chelmsford, CM1 1JG.

Tasty Healthy Halloween Treats Get spooky with these scarily simple Halloween recipes that you can cook up with the help of any aspiring toddler trick or treater ! Edible eyeball anyone? Or how about a cheesy witch’s finger? Or perhaps a nibble from a spooky skeleton platter? Whilst Trick or Treating is a highlight of the year for scores of mini (and not so mini) trick or treaters, the eternal issue is how to avoid the endless sugary sweets and cakes that lurk and tempt at this time of year. Organix might have the answer, with their range of ghoulishly good recipes for the whole family. They’re also fun to make, designed to be showstoppers at any halloween party, and they’re healthy too! So forget the sugary treats this Halloween and get creative with these instead! This fiendishly good Halloween platter, contains Edible eyeballs that are not only easy to make, but they’re tasty too, and make a bold statement to any Halloween platter. Simply halve the cherry tomatoes and scoop out the seeds, fill the cream cheese into the tomatoes, add the peas to the centre of the cream cheese to make the pupil of the eyeball and hey presto! For the apple bites fill a bowl with some water and mix the lemon juice in the water. Cut the apple into 5 or 6 wedges and remove the core and seeds. Work on one piece of apple at a time and carve a zigzag shape to the skin side, so that it looks like teeth As for the the witches cheese fingers, cut the cheddar cheese into finger strips, trim the cheese strip into a ghoulish finger shape and draw the knuckle lines with the end of a spoon. Place a nail shaped piece of 34 •October 21 • www.kidaround.biz

low levels of serotonin are linked to the symptoms of depression, including feeling sad, upset, and generally low in mood.

Many of us are affected by seasonal changes, especially as the days grow shorter and the weather gets colder. It’s not uncommon, at this time of year for Brits across the nation to feel their energy levels deflating. However, for some of us, this can be a sign of something much more serious. Sometimes referred to as ‘winter gloom’, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a form of depression that usually begins in Autumn, and can last throughout winter. Three in every 100 people in the UK are affected - that’s over two million Brits!

Whilst the exact cause of SAD is still largely unknown, the NHS cite reduced sunlight hours as the main contributing factor. While the condition is more common in women, around a third of those diagnosed are men. However, men are 20% less likely to visit their GP than women for a health-related issue, meaning conditions such as SAD are going unnoticed and undiagnosed in men across the UK. With that being said, Earim Chaudry, Medical Director of men’s health platform Manual has listed some of the main causes for men suffering from the condition, as well as some treatments available that can help this winter. Causes of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) Increased Levels of Melatonin Melatonin is a hormone primarily released by the pineal gland at night, and has long been associated with control of the sleep-wake cycle. People with SAD may produce more melatonin, which can make them more sleepy. As winter days become darker, melatonin production increases and, in response, those with SAD can feel overtired and lethargic, which can contribute to depression. Lower Serotonin Levels Serotonin is a hormone that affects your mood, appetite and sleep. A lack of sunlight may lead to lower serotonin levels which can be linked to feelings of depression. Research shows that high levels of serotonin in the brain are linked to elevated mood and feeling happy, whereas 38 •October 21 • www.kidaround.biz

Body's Internal Clock (Circadian Rhythm) The human body uses sunlight to time various important functions, including when you wake up, so lower light levels during the winter may disrupt your body clock and lead to symptoms of SAD. Treatments for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) Dietary Changes Some changes in eating habits can be beneficial to your overall mood. Vitamin D, also known as the “sunshine vitamin”, is essential for the winter months and should be incorporated into your diet. Foods to include are oily fish, eggs and mushrooms. Supplements can also be taken to make sure you’re getting the right dosage of the vitamin. Dark, leafy greens, high in Vitamin A, calcium and Vitamin C should also be eaten. Psychotherapy Psychotherapy, also called talking therapy, is another option to treat SAD. It can be used to help a person change behaviour, increase happiness, and overcome problems. The main purpose is to change negative thoughts and behaviours that may be making you feel worse. During psychotherapy, you can learn about your condition, and work with a professional on how to treat this. Speak with your GP for more information about psychotherapy. Light Therapy Some people with SAD find that light therapy can help improve their mood. The light produced from a special SAD lamp can encourage your brain to reduce the production of melatonin (a hormone that makes you sleepy) and increase the production of serotonin (a hormone that affects your mood), which can in theory help fight depression. Sunrise alarm clocks, which gradually light up your bedroom as you wake up, are also an option. If you feel you are affected by SAD or are struggling with your mental health, reach for help. You can reach out to your GP. Don't face it alone/

Have you been meaning to start a savings account? Here's some tips we have sourced to try and make you kick start that plan. How to give your child a financial head-start in life With the cost of living and tuition fees on the rise, today’s young adults are facing an increasingly difficult financial climate, Jamie Smith-Thompson from Portafina gives his tips on how you can save for your child’s future Preparing your child for adult life can have its challenges. With rising university tuition fees and the increasing cost of living, young adults have to deal with worries beyond their studies. But what if you could make things a little bit easier for your child and their future finances? Whether your child is thinking of broadening their education or taking work-based training, beginning preparations on their behalf for their future sooner rather than later could make a huge difference. Rising costs Tuition fees have been a cause of concern for students for a long time. First introduced in 1998 at £1,000 per year1, that figure has now increased to a massive £9,2502 in 2018. Alongside tuition fees, the cost of living in the UK has also been steadily increasing over the last 20 years. House prices have now risen to an average of £226,351 in the UK, an annual increase of 5.1%, leading student lettings to become unaffordable for many.3 On average, students are now expected to pay £566 a month4 for rent alone. Combine this with the increased cost of living, travel, and socialising, it’s no wonder some young people can be put off by further education altogether. Jamie Smith-Thompson, managing director of pension advice specialists, Portafina, provides ways you can prepare for your child’s future. He says, “A lot of young people’s concern is getting into debt if they attend university. Yet, it should be more than just about finances. It’s about the positive experience they will have, and there are things you can do to help ease the financial burden.” ISA ISAs are a tax-free way to save for your child’s future and can be opened on behalf of your child if they are under the age of 18. Any money you put into the ISA automatically becomes your child’s on their 18th birthday. Jamie comments; “Opening an ISA is a great way of saving for your child. Your money should grow more in an ISA than a regular bank account, yet it gives your child the option to access it if they need to. “Although some ISAs do have restrictions to prevent withdrawals for a set period of time, the good news is they come with the perks of tax-free interest and taxfree withdrawals. For the 2018/19 financial year, your child’s tax-free allowance is £4,260.” Student bank accounts Looking at how opening a student account for your child can be beneficial, Jamie says; “If your child chooses to go into further education, you can help them prepare for their time at university by setting up

a student bank account or upgrade a current account into a student one. These types of accounts can offer several benefits that will help them save money when they really need to. Plus, they will be able to get their hands on discounts on food, shops and even days out! Some accounts come with travel cards to help students get to and from university and of course, the odd visit home, making travel cheaper and easier.” Pension Starting a pension for your child may sound unusual, but it’s actually one of the best ways to save for your child’s future, plus there are some great benefits to take advantage of. You can start a pension for your child as long as they are under the age of 18. The children’s pension also offers tax relief on contributions, which is essentially free money! The maximum contribution to a child’s pension with tax relief is £2,880 a year and the tax relief available is 20%. This means the government will top up a maximum contribution to £3,600 a year. 5 Plus, putting money into your child’s pension means they will benefit from the power of compound interest for as long as possible. This is the interest that is earnt from the interest of the money that you save. And to make the most of that power, it’s essential that you start saving as early as possible. You can find out more about compound interest here and tax reliefhere. In summary, Jamie added: “Even if you can only afford to contribute a small amount each month, as long as you do this regularly, it’s a great step in the right direction to giving your child a financial head start.” To read more about how to give your child a head start in life, head to https://www.portafina.co.uk/ blog/how-to-give-your-child-a-financial-head-startin-adult-life

Help to Save Scheme Get help with savings if you’re on a low income

How it works Help to Save is a type of savings account. It allows certain people entitled to Working Tax Credit or receiving Universal Credit to get a bonus of 50p for every £1 they save over 4 years. You get bonuses at the end of the second and fourth years. They’re based on how much you’ve saved. You can save up to £50 each calendar month. Help to Save is backed by the government so all savings in the scheme are secure. You can pay money into your Help to Save account by debit card, standing order or bank transfer. You do not have to pay money in every calendar month. You

DON’T FORGET TO MENTION US WHEN CALLING

can pay in as many times as you like, but the most you can pay in each calendar month is £50. You can only withdraw money from your Help to Save account to your bank account. After 4 years your Help to Save account will be closed. You will not be able to reopen it or open another Help to Save account. You’ll be able to keep the money from your account. You can close your account at any time. If you close your account early you’ll miss your next bonus and you will not be able to open another one. What you’ll get You can earn 2 tax-free bonuses over 4 years. You’ll get any bonuses you’ve earned even if you withdraw money. After your first 2 years, you’ll get a first bonus if you’ve been using your account to save. This bonus will be 50% of the highest balance you’ve saved. After 4 years, you’ll get a final bonus if you continue to save. This bonus will be 50% of savings you pay into your account above the highest balance you saved in the first 2 years. If your highest balance does not increase, you will not earn a final bonus. The most you can pay into your account each calendar month is £50, which is £2,400 over 4 years. The most you can earn from your savings in 4 years is £1,200 in bonus money. Your bonus is paid into your bank account, not your Help to Save account. ExampleYou pay in £25 every calendar month for 2 years. You do not withdraw any money. Your highest balance will be £600. Your first bonus is £300, which is 50% of £600. In years 3 and 4 you save an extra £200 to grow your highest balance from £600 to £800. Your final bonus is £100, which is 50% of £200. Even though you withdrew some money after your balance was £800, this doesn’t affect your bonus. What happens if you withdraw money If you withdraw money it will be harder for you to: • grow your highest balance • earn the largest possible bonuses Withdrawing money could mean you are not able to earn a final bonus - depending on how much you withdraw and when. Eligibility You can open a Help to Save account if you’re either: • entitled to Working Tax Credit and receiving Working Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit payments • claiming Universal Credit and your household income in your last monthly assessment period was £542.88 or more Payments from Universal Credit do not count as part of your household income. You also need to be living in the UK. If you live overseas, you can apply for an account if you’re either a: • Crown servant or their spouse or civil partner • member of the British armed forces or their spouse or civil partner For more information and to apply visit: https://www.gov.uk/get-help-savings-low-income
