16th May 2014 Old Borlasian Monty Returns to Celebrate 100th Birthday Borlase's oldest Old Borlasian Monty Seymour attended a special tea party in celebration of his 100th birthday on Thursday 15th May. As a school boy Monty would arrive to school by pony. For this special occasion, Monty was collected from Marlow Sports Club by a horse and carriage and taken up the high street and through the school archway into Borlase. When he found out that he was going to be taken to school on a horse and carriage he was delighted. He exclaimed "This is like a dream". Monty saw his name on an old school crest in the cloisters next to the famous “Snakehips” Johnson's from 1930 and then walked down the path lined with cheering students. He was greeted with a wonderful birthday card designed by Cece Briscoe and Erica Dudeney (year 8), and a special choral ensemble sang Happy Birthday before he had a private birthday tea where he talked about his school days and life after Borlase to a group of students. Celia Blakeway-Phillips said "Borlase was privileged to celebrate such a momentous occasion with Monty; it had been such a special day for Monty and all those who came out to celebrate with him". Borlase did him proud. Special thanks to Burgers Artisan Bakery for kindly donating a special birthday cake to mark the occasion. Thanks also for the kindness and warm welcome to all those students, teachers, shopkeepers and members of the public. C. Blakeway-Phillips

Priority for Cashless Catering Once again, thank you to all those parents who have made greater use of the ParentPay Cashless Catering system since its introduction at Easter and also supported our trial of 'cashless only' for the first 15 minutes of each break. The speed with which pupils transit through the canteen has dramatically reduced queue times, which in turn helps with general discipline and behaviour. Positive comments have been noted from pupils themselves - those using cashless of course. We will continue with the trial through to half-term and then report back again. Thank you again for heeding the communications and reacting so well to the changes. Mr J Clegg

Bags 2 School Another Bags2 School Collection on behalf of SWBGS Parents Association will be held on 24th June. We would like to give parents and children the opportunity to look out any unwanted textiles and shoes (not duvets or pillows) and keep them aside for the collection. There will be bags handed to the pupils during their tutor groups from 12th May and so this will give everyone plenty of time to fill their bags. The heavier our collection, the more money is donated to the PA charity. The textiles all go to developing countries. SWBGS Parents Association.

Year 13 Leavers' Chapel Service and Tea Party It was lovely to have so many parents join us on this very special day. Thanks to the weather, the tea party was held in the Cloisters after a poignant and memorable chapel service.

We wish our year 13s all the very best for their examinations and beyond.

Rowing News Borlase Rowing opened the Regatta season in fine form. The first outing for the club was at Wallingford Regatta held at Dorney Lake on Sunday 3rd May. Six crews made it into the finals including a second place for Angus Warren and Cam Murray in the Junior 18 doubles and first place for the Junior 18 Men's quad of Rufus Biggs, Chris Lawrie, Fraser Russell and Angus Warren. The following day saw the Club return to Dorney Lake for Marlow Spring Regatta, where the Junior 15 boys won in the Eight. On Saturday 10th May, the Juniors and Seniors travelled up to Bedford Regatta. A great day for the Senior Girls including Akil Hashmi as cox in their Eight, as they came first and won the Guy Pym Challenge Trophy. Three other crews reached the finals including the Junior 15 boys Eight, Junior Girls 15 2nd 4 and the senior girls again in the Intermediate Eights category. Two of our rowers were also representing Great Britain on the 10th and 11th of May at Munich Junior International Regatta. Chris Lawrie and Fraser Russell were chosen by GB Rowing to row in a quad and a doubles. Congratulations to Chris who was in the winning quad (3rd from right). http://www.britishrowing.org/news/2014/may/13/gb-rowing-teams-youngguns-do-well-munich-1 One of our rowers Rufus Biggs received a ÂŁ750 grant from the Buckinghamshire SportsAid Foundation on Friday 9th May. Two-time Olympian Derek Redmond presented Rufus with his cheque at a special lunch held at Dorney Lake. Rufus intends to spend the money on a new set of oars and a speed coach to help him train.

Football

Summer Netball Club

The 1st XI football team went down 3-2 in the final of the South Bucks VI form cup. The game was played at Bisham Abbey against the Misbourne School. Borlase went 1-0 up after 20 minutes but found themselves 3-1 down with only half an hour to play. A late penalty from next years captain, Charlie Bull, set up for an exciting finish and with 1 minute on the clock we hit the cross bar off an Oliver Tiliouine header. Unfortunately we were out of time and Misbourne ran out winners. It was a very competitive game and capped the end of a good season for the 1st XI. A big thank you to Ally Brady as outgoing captain and hopefully the summer break and World Cup in Brazil will inspire us for next season.

Please see at the end of this newsletter a letter regarding a summer netball club starting after half term.

Mr C Robertson

It will take place on Fridays and is open to all year 710 girls interested in playing netball - regardless of the level of experience or ability. It's a fantastic opportunity to improve your netball skills, general fitness and make new friends. It will be led by Lucy Mogford, who has been coaching this year and will be coaching 3 teams next year. It will include netball skills, game play and lots of fun. Girls Tennis National Championships (Beth Marriott, Holly Russell, Sophie Lane, Matilda Crowfoot) Having seen off Headington School in the second round of the Aegon National Championships, we hosted Claire's Court on a sunny Wednesday evening. The girls played superbly and cruised to an 8-4 victory. Singles wins for Sophie and Beth set us up for a tense doubles challenge which we overcame with confidence and style. Sophie and Matilda won in straight sets as did Holly and Beth. Haberdashes Askes or Northwood College await us in the final of the regional draw. Mr C Robertson
