NEXT NEWSLETTER Friday 16th May

Welcome & Goodbye Welcome to Joe Gleeson & Marisse Smail who have joined the PE Dept. this term, Brian Mcloskey who will be joining technology and Michelle Smith as the Literacy Administrator. Best wishes to Jenny Stephenson, Jos Dean and Nabeel Ali, who are onto pastures new.

Bags 2 School Another Bags2 School Collection on behalf of SWBGS Parents Association will be held on 24th June. We would like to give parents and children the opportunity to look out any unwanted textiles and shoes (not duvets or pillows) and keep them aside for the collection. There will be bags handed to the pupils during their tutor groups from 12th May and so this will give everyone plenty of time to fill their bags. The heavier our collection, the more money is donated to the PA charity. The textiles all go to developing countries. SWBGS Parents Association.

Cashless Catering Many thanks to all of parents who reacted to the change announcements over the last half-term and used ParentPay to top-up their child's catering accounts over Easter. Generally there was a smooth transition from the sQuid service. Please note that although ParentPay does not currently operate an 'auto top-up' facility, a prompting text alert can be sent to you when funds are low and you can now top-up the catering accounts when paying for trips and activities. You can also combine your children under one log-on account, in order to ease your usage of the facility. We have noted that pupils who use the cashless catering payment system do transit through the tills a great deal quicker than those who continue to use cash. In order to take advantage of this faster throughput, we will experiment with a 'cashless only' service for the first 15 minutes of each break from 12 May 14. This scheme has been adopted successfully in other local schools with a marked reduction in queue times. If you still need to initiate your ParentPay accounts, please contact finance@swbgs.com Mr J Clegg

Girls Rowing Congratulations to Georgia Mulraine who came 16th in the GB trials in Nottingham. This has put Georgia in a great position as she may have the opportunity to represent at the World Championship, or gain a place in the European Squad for the summer. Congratulations Georgia!

Tennis Another great result against a major private school as our Senior girls tennis team beat Headington School 102 in the Aegon National Championships. They will play either Wycombe Abbey or Claire's Court in the next round. Players were Beth Marriott, Holly Russell, Sophie Lane and Matilda Crowfoot. Well done girls!

Cheerleading Congratulations to the girls cheerleading squad, who did brilliantly at the beginning of April at the Bucks District Cheerleading Competition. The whole squad did brilliantly in the Level 2 Cheerleading competition but were unfortunate to be beaten by a very competent Great Marlow squad. The Stunt team held off 4 Wycombe High Stunt squads to win their category. Well done to all the girls and all the parents for their support.

Win for Mums’ Netball Team On Sunday 27th April, the Borlase Mums’ netball team triumphed in the Mums’ Netball Tournament at Great Marlow School. We fought against driving rain and stiff competition. By the semifinals we had only lost one game by one goal. We then pressed on to win the semis and ultimately won the grand final, beating the team we lost to earlier (Great Marlow) 5-2. In total we beat 12 local schools from Marlow, Flackwell Heath and Bourne End to storm off with the shield and gold medals all round, a step up from our bronze victory last year. I am blown away by our team and know the extra training they put in paid off to do Borlase proud! Team players were Lucinda Gale, Sally Casale, Annette Allanson, Wanda McKie-Smith, Taisa Lane, Tracy Harris, Sarah Owen and Melanie Moreton. Wanda McKie-Smith

National Success in English Two Year 12 English Literature students have recently enjoyed success in national competitions. Ross Macrae has reached the shortlist for the Lancaster University Writing Awards with an analysis of Oscar Wilde's 'The Importance of Being Earnest'. His essay, which is a combination of recreative writing and textual analysis, will now be judged against other shortlisted entries from sixth formers across the UK by Professor Terry Eagleton. Ella Capel-Smith's entry for the prestigious Tower Poetry Prize, an annual poetry competition for sixth formers run by Christchurch College, Oxford, has been commended and long-listed by the judges and will shortly appear on the Tower Poetry website. Ella is also studying Creative Writing AS level this year. Look out for both of these students' work in this year's Borlasian magazine. Mrs L Forrest

BBC Radio 2’s 500 Word Story Success In March over 50 students from Borlase entered the BBC Radio 2’s 500 Word Story Competition. With over 118,000 entries, competition is fierce and students have to go above and beyond the standard for their age group in order to be shortlisted. JJ Jones (S1) is a year 8 student who achieved just this. She has been shortlisted from the 118,000 entries to proceed to the second round of the competition. JJ’s story entitled ‘Real Friendship’ questions what it really means to call someone your friend and evokes a real sense of empathy from the reader. The next round of the competition takes place in early May and we wish JJ the best of luck! Miss Stephenson
