CEO CORNER

Hello PPINK friends and family, My name is Chris Charbonneau, and I am the new CEO of Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky (PPINK) as of February 2019. I will also continue to serve as CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest and the Hawaiian Islands (PPGNHI). I am very excited to return to the eastern part of the country to work on expanding access to reproductive health care after serving as CEO of Planned Parenthood in Arkansas over 30 years ago. There’s no question that it is challenging to carry out our mission in Indiana and Kentucky, but the team has done a phenomenal job fiercely resisting rollbacks to our rights and we will now join you in this fight. We have spent the last few months crossing T’s and dotting I’s on all the legal paperwork, and it’s been a learning process for everyone involved, including this 35-year Planned Parenthood leader! I am humbled by the commitment and dedication of everyone at PPINK and excited to help amplify all the work they do. Many staff from PPGNHI have already visited Indiana and Kentucky to begin building relationships that will set the stage for our alliance to thrive together.

We are committed to a shared mission of delivering timely, affordable, and expert health care and education to those most in need. This strategic alliance will also allow both PPGNHI and PPINK to adjust to patient needs and explore innovative care models more nimbly. We are grateful for the warm welcome we’ve received in Indiana and Kentucky. You are ensuring all people we serve can continue to rely on Planned Parenthood for high-quality health care, education, and advocacy—and we are so proud to lock arms with you. This is an exciting time for all of us as we look ahead to the possibilities of a brighter future and the opportunity to make an even greater impact in our communities. This strategic alliance offers so many benefits for improving Planned Parenthood’s mission across the country, and I look forward to embarking on this journey with you all. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Angela Brewer, Assistant to the CEO, to set up a time to talk with someone on our team at 317-637-4330 or angela.brewer@ppink.org.

SPEAKING OUT AND TAKING ACTION

Hoosiers and Kentuckians

As legislators returned to their chambers in January, Hoosiers and Kentuckians raised their voices in support of reproductive rights! In Indiana, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Indiana and Kentucky (PPAIK) supporters kicked off the 2019 legislative session with a press conference supporting Sen. Jean Breaux’s reproductive freedom bill, Senate Bill (SB) 589. In Frankfort, advocates called for the General Assembly to protect pregnant Kentuckians in the workplace by passing SB 18, the Pregnant Workers Act. 4

However, anti-abortion politicians in both states

are emboldened by Brett Kavanaugh’s presence on the Supreme Court and are pushing harder

than ever to pass extreme abortion bans into law. Abortion is already difficult to access in Indiana, and House Bill (HB) 1211 would make the

problem even worse. This bill would outlaw

a common, safe abortion procedure used in the second trimester, leaving Hoosiers with

no choice but to leave the state for care after 14 weeks. Another bill, SB 201, would allow

pharmacists, nurses, and physicians assistants to refuse to provide abortion care.

care in the Commonwealth by banning abortion at about six weeks—before many know they are pregnant. Legislators are also considering a bill (HB 148) that would immediately outlaw abortion if Roe v. Wade is ever overturned; a bill (SB 50) based in junk science about so-called “abortion reversal”; and a bill (HB 5) that would ban abortion based on certain fetal characteristics.

CELEBRATIONS

Champions Present Reproductive Justice Bill in Indiana 1

On the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, Hoosiers gathered in the Statehouse to call for the passage of Sen. Jean Breaux’s Senate Bill (SB) 589. Patient advocates, doctors, and clergy members spoke at a press conference to share their stories and explain how this reproductive justice bill would help Hoosiers. SB 589 affirms that individuals, not the government, should

Kentucky LARC Project Fundraiser

PPINK supporters gathered in Louisville for an event hosted by Kim Greene and Emily Bingham to support the Kentucky LARC Project (KLP). This program helps Kentuckians access long-acting, reversible contraception like IUDs and birth control implants. The gathering raised about $25,000 for the KLP. 4 6
