THE NEWSLETTER OF PLANNED PARENTHOOD OF INDIANA AND KENTUCKY / SUMMER 2018 FIRST ISSUE OF THE 2019 FISCAL YEAR

CEO CORNER

One year ago, I accepted the role of President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Indiana and

Kentucky (PPINK) and learned

three things about #TeamPPINK: 1 Our patients are at the center

of everything we do. They drive every decision that we make

because we are here for them, no matter what.

2 Our supporters are some of the fiercest and feistiest advocates

on the planet. You show up every time, especially when you are

needed the most, doing whatever it takes to get the job done.

3 Our resolve to fight and speak out for the people who need us

is unmatched. You have been there with us every day of the last year.

As I look ahead, I am empowered by the passion and dedication I see from our patients, staff, and supporters.

GET INVOLVED!

PPINK health centers will continue to provide affordable, quality care without judgment to patients every single day. And attacks on

that care — in Indiana, in Kentucky, and on Capitol Hill — will get more

intense. But we are strong enough to resist because I have seen what’s possible when #TeamPPINK stands together. No Matter What.

Education for All Ages! In the summer months, it’s easy to find a member of

PPINK’s education staff. Warm weather is the perfect time for community outreach, whether it’s at a Pride festival, the Indiana Black Expo, or a community health fair.

Sara and Albert Reuben Partners in Health Education (SARPHE), PPINK’s education department, serves

Hoosiers and Kentuckians of all ages and backgrounds. Our programs provide age-appropriate,

comprehensive sex education that helps equip participants to lead sexually healthy lives.

“We help people to understand sexuality

as a positive force in our lives that we can embrace and celebrate.”

“Young folks are great to work with since they ask

the most unabashed questions about their bodies

and desires,” said Candice Gary, a SARPHE educator. Program participants go beyond learning the facts about anatomy and reproduction: They also learn critical thinking and decision-making skills.

But sex education isn’t just for kids! Our educators also work with adults in the Indiana and Kentucky

communities to build relationship skills and better

4

understand how sexual health is related to overall health and well-being.

The best sex education programs are empowering, rather than prescriptive. Program participants are

sometimes surprised by PPINK’s approach, which is to answer whatever questions are raised in a

straightforward, accurate, and age-appropriate way. “I love it when people begin to get that sexuality is more than avoiding unintended pregnancy

and sexually transmitted infections,” said Leslie

Montgomery, a SARPHE educator. “We help people

to understand sexuality as a positive force in our lives that we can embrace and celebrate.”

LEARNING TO ORGANIZE

Nyet’s Story

In July, Nyet joined over 60 other young Indiana

and Kentucky activists at the Power of Pink volunteer convening organized by the Planned Parenthood Action Fund! This is why organizing in Louisville is important to her:

When I was young, my parents decided to leave their home to achieve a piece of the American dream for themselves and their two young daughters.

The brave decision that my parents made

has motivated me in every aspect of my life

and enabled me to view society from a very

different perspective. As I got older, I noticed that our powerful, first world nation has so much work that needs to be done. Coming

from a background where topics pertaining to

women are not celebrated and often not even discussed, I became incredibly passionate

about women’s rights, reproductive rights,

and the rights of marginalized communities.

I decided to study public health to learn not only about health, but also about inequality

and injustice. I admire how Planned Parenthood promotes sex education that does not seek to shame young women and girls, but instead empowers them and allows them to make

smart decisions in the safest ways possible. 6
