VARSITY

SEASON OUTLOOK The 2017 Pirates have many goals but one that shines bright, (WEEK 11). This team has had a tremendous offseason and will do whatever it takes to make the playoffs. Our seniors tasted the playoffs in 2015 and didn’t like the feeling in their guts at the conclusion of the 2016 season just coming up short. We have many returning starters on both sides of the ball and have seen great competition in the spring from our younger players. We look forward to the relationships that will grow and last a lifetime due to hard work and common goals that we as a team and staff will share.

Supporting education. Our future depends on it.

PUTNAM CITY 2017 FOOTBALL

2016 IN REVIEW Last year’s team finished 4-6 missing the 6A-2 playoffs by 7 points. The team was young and inexperienced yet showed maturity and growth by the end of the season. They finished the season with a big win over Enid to propel them into what has become a great offseason for the Pirates. The 2017 season returns 9 starters on offense and 7 on defense. They are experienced and hungry for the playoffs. Getting to week 11 seems to be priority one for this team. Many athletes are being recruited off the 2017 team including Ron Tatum, Christian Arriola, Collin Clay, Eric Butler, Keaire Wilkins, Chase Allsup and AJ Newsome just to name a few.

PUTNAM CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION The mission of Putnam City Schools is to prepare all students to be self-navigating critical thinkers for life. We want students to be resourceful and accomplished when they are in our classrooms and long after they leave those classrooms. It’s a mission in which we are succeeding. Consider:

Dr. Fred Rhodes Superintendent

In the 31 years in which the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence has named Academic All-Staters,120 Putnam City students have been so honored. That’s the fourth-highest total of any school system in the state. Selection of scholars for this honor has been described by University of Oklahoma President and Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence Chairman and Founder David L. Boren as “Oklahoma’s most rigorous academic competition.” In 2016 40 district students were named Oklahoma Academic Scholars by the Oklahoma State Department of Education. Putnam City, the state’s fifth-largest school district, has the third-highest number of Oklahoma Academic Scholars all-time. In 2017 our graduating seniors received more than $8 million in scholarships from universities across the nation. Whether you’re talking about district students or the district as a whole, Putnam City is at the head of the class

Dr. Dick Balenseifen

District Athletic Director

Is There a City of Putnam City? “Putnam City” was the name given to 2,000 acres of land owned by Israel Mercer Putnam, an early-day Oklahoma real estate developer and legislator. Putnam had the area platted as city but never filed incorporation papers with the state that would have made it official. Putnam proposed to Gov. Haskell and a State Capitol Commission that the State Capitol be established on his land, a proposal the governor and commission approved. Those arrangements fell apart when the Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled the governor and commission must have legislative approval. The legislature instead chose an area at 23rd and Lincoln, freeing “Putnam City” for a new and different future.

Many of the entertainment options are a result of MAPS including the Bricktown Canal, Myriad Botanical Gardens, Chesapeake Energy Arena, Chickasaw Bricktown Ball Park, and the 7 mile stretch of the North Canadian River which is the home to white water rafting, kayaking center, bike trails, parks, ferris wheel, and many other entertainment options. The 70 acre urban oasis, Scissortail Park, will connect downtown with the river with a series of parks, lakes, trails, and entertainment venues. Completion is set to be completed in 2019. Oklahoma City is also now home to a Top Golf, iFly, Brickopolis Putt Putt, Lost Lakes, and River Sport Adventures. Warr Acres is a city that lies completely within Oklahoma City. Bethany is currently the home of Southern Nazarene University and SW Christian University. The two largest state universities (University of Oklahoma in Norman and Oklahoma State University in Stillwater) are less than an hour away. Looking to stay closer are SNU, SWCU, UCO, OCU, Oklahoma Christian University, and OSU-OKC. Francis Tuttle Technology Centers have two campuses within the area.
