RIVERSIDE, PARKVILLE & KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI
Parkville is named for George S. Park who bought the steamboat landing concession on the Missouri River from David English in 1838 shortly after the Platte Purchase from the Native Americans opened the area for settlement. He served as the town’s first postmaster. In 1845, he organized the Parkville Presbyterian Church which is still one of the town’s largest congregations. In 1853, he started the Industrial Luminary, a newspaper some believed to abolitionist. Park’s newspaper was raided by a pro-slavery mob on April 14, 1855, and the printing press was thrown in the Missouri River. Park was in Polistra at the time closing a deal to turn over the town into a newly named Boston, Kansas to be run by members of the abolitionist New England Emigrant Aid Company (who in turn would rename it Manhattan). The Parkville Luminary, a newspaper based on the original Luminary, began publishing again in 2004 and is circulated every Friday. The newspaper’s first issue contained unpublished letters from Park’s last issue and frequently reprints Park’s own editorials from the original Luminary. In 1875, he donated land for what would become Park University on the bluffs above the Missouri River. His former home is a prominent part of the campus, visible from the entrance and serving as the school’s alumni center. Riverside, is located just minutes north of downtown Kansas City. Roots run deep here. Neighborhoods thrive. And new life, growth and opportunities are easy to find and hard to pass up. This is more than an address. This is a place to live, work, raise a family or run a business. This is life upstream from ordinary. With a healthy mix of new and existing homes, a highly rated school district, lots of open space, extensive walking/biking trails and no property, real estate or earnings taxes, it all adds up to life less ordinary. Riverside continues to build a planned trail system that will soon loop around the entire community and link with Platte County, Kansas City and Parkville trails. More than 70 percent

of single-family homes in Riverside participate in the City’s free curbside recycling program. Drop-off bins on the City Hall campus help more citizens recycle paper, cardboard, plastic, aluminum and glass. The Riverside composting program allows residents to drop off yard waste at no charge. Kansas City is the largest city in the state of Missouri by population. It is the 23rd-largest city by area and the 37th largest by population in the United States. Founded in the 1830s as Missouri River port due to its confluence with the Kansas River. Originally named after the river, Kansas, but this caused confusion after the Kansas Territory was established in 1854. The name Kansas City was assigned to help people distinguish the two. Greater Kansas City is made up of 11 counties, covering two states. More than 1.8 million people call Greater Kansas City home. The city is considered the #1 inland trade zone and is also the secondlargest rail center in the U.S. Kansas City is famous for its barbecue. In fact, it’s considered the barbercue capital of the world with dozens of restaurants offering the famous cuisine.
