Astorians have been staying cool this summer with pieces like lightweight blouses, dressy shorts, floral dresses and denim overalls. And the fashionistas I noticed didn’t forget to accessorize; they used bags, jewelry, sunglasses and more to showcase their feminine to edgy personalities.

Hazel (@elmart13) was on her way to the movies to catch “The Incredibles 2.” She said her style is “modern but low-key trendy.” Her high-waisted jeans and kicks paired with a floral print top made a summer statement for an afternoon hanging out with friends.
Astorian Carly (@carlyblake419) is a performer who was on her way to Astoria Bier and Cheese when I saw her. She said she has a “laidback” style. I mean, how could I not stop this trendy girl? The denim overalls, tank, shoes and shades!? She gets a 10 in my book! Sonia (@sv_bravo) was finished with work when I spotted her. She was visiting Astoria and on her way to meet her hubby. She defines her style as “casual/classy.” I loved her floral dress, paired with flip-flops and trendy shades. Not too dressy and not too casual — an ensemble that was just right for a laid-back Friday evening.
Tenzin (@yogibeaarr), a student living in Astoria, was on her way to work when I approached her. Her loose-fitting, lightweight blouse with black skinnies and a cute braid caught my eye. She defines her style as “classy street chic.”

Three years ago, Astoria resident Teddy Droseros stumbled upon an article about gratitude and started writing down what he was grateful for every night before bed. He noticed that it changed his reaction to things and helped him focus on the good in situations.

heavy world, it’s nice to know that sweet simplicity still brings people joy. What’s the biggest source of gratitude in Astoria? You guessed it – our endearing neighborhood. Grateful Peoples has flourished into a multifaceted foundation. Droseros’ gratitude journals are sold online and at retailers around the country. Droseros even expanded the Good Vibes Project into schools, and he hopes to bring it into prisons one day. He reflected on how working with the education system came about: “I remember thinking, ‘I was in my midtwenties when I started doing this. What if I was 10 or 15 and someone told me the idea of writing down what I’m grateful for? Where would I be today? Where would my mind be at today? How much would I have grown?’” The pilot program included 25 students at a school in Brooklyn and expanded to 1,200 the following year. Teachers give students time each morning to write down

“I
started becoming really passionate about the power of gratitude and I started to change a lot … even though nothing changes, just our perception,” Droseros said. “I had the idea to make a gratitude journal with the artwork I was making at the time. I didn't know what I was going to do with it, but for the first time in my life, my heart told me to do something. It just felt right.” It took Droseros about a year to put together his company, appropriately named Grateful Peoples. In the beginning, he walked around to local shops, asking to leave a journal out for customers to write down what they were grateful for. He called this the Good Vibes Project, and it has since gone national. As books fill up, Droseros collects them and reads the beautiful sentiments people have added. Overall, the two most common things people are grateful for are family and the sun. In a digital

At the end of each academic year, Droseros visits the students to see their progress, amazed at the newfound hope that is instilled in the kids, some of whom come from underprivileged backgrounds. There are currently 4,000 students signed up for the upcoming school year. One way this project is made possible is through the Buy One Share One initiative, bringing mindfulness to both workplace and classroom. For every journal a corporation buys for an employee, a journal is donated to a child in the classroom.
Photos by SB Photography When asked about the future of Grateful Peoples, Droseros talked about his next labor of love: a coffee table book. “We’re collecting filled up journals from around the country and will compile them all into one place to give people the experience of being inspired by all these cool, fun and crazy thoughts,” he said. “I plan to use at least 1,000 entries. I want to keep it as close as possible to the current book. It would be impossible to capture the same energy because these books I have at home, hundreds of people have

One of the most heartwarming parts of Grateful Peoples’ story is how big a part the community of Astoria played in getting this project off the ground. The Brass Owl, Sai Organics and Quontic Bank are just a few of the businesses where you can find the colorful journals. “We held a workshop at OK Café near Ditmars last year, which was really cool,” Droseros recalled. “A bunch of people from the community came and I talked about the project. Talking in front of people is always a growing experience for me. Giselle at OK Café gave me that experience, which I’m really grateful for.” Astoria Coffee was the first business that accepted one of the journals. They are now on their fourth book, calling Droseros for a new one every time the pages fill up with moments of gratitude from people in the neighborhood. Recently, a woman whose friend passed away contacted Droseros, knowing her friend wrote in a journal left at Astoria Coffee. Droseros took the time to locate her late friend’s writing and gifted the journal to the woman. That’s the wonderful thing about gratitude – we can look for it even in the darkest moments.

A well-known Long Island City real estate firm won a victory in court against a competing New Yorkbased company.
I
n June, Modern Spaces called on the Supreme Court to take action against real estate technology company Compass from stealing their business “through the unlawful misappropriation of [the] Plaintiff’s trade secrets,” which QNS reported on in February. As a result, the company asked for compensation for damages that were incurred, as well as a restraining order against Compass.

Modern Spaces was founded in 2008 by its CEO Eric Benaim; Compass was founded in 2012 by Ori Allon and Robert Reffkin. According to the complaint, Jessica Meis had worked for Modern Spaces for many years before she “terminated her relationship with Modern Spaces” in January 2018. Thereafter, the company claimed, Meis emailed their proprietary information to her personal email, including lists of real estate buyers and sellers. The lawsuit detailed that Compass had allegedly encouraged Meis to “misappropriate” the proprietary information and trade secrets that she stole for the purposes of “its own financial gain.” Modern Spaces said that they “seek
to recover damages” for several things, including business that was improperly diverted to Compass using these tactics, misappropriation of trade secrets under state and federal law, “unlawful interference with Modern Spaces exclusive listing agreements” and damage to public reputation and goodwill. In addition, the real estate firm was granted a temporary restraining order, preliminary injunction and final injunction to prevent Compass from poaching and exploiting Modern Spaces’ information and put “an immediate halt to the substantial and irreparable harm and damages the defendants have caused and continue to cause.” Compensatory damages to Modern Spaces are to be determined at trial.

renatal yoga classes at The Yoga Room have become increasingly popular since Astoria resident Juliana Mitchell began teaching them in 2006, and it’s not simply that there seem to be more young families in western Queens these days. Some students come back to her class for their second or third pregnancies, while others find their way there through referrals. Mitchell said she can even predict when class sizes are about to grow: “Every time there’s a big snowstorm or blackout, in eight to 16 weeks my classes are going to expand in size because people are making babies,” she said. Mitchell doesn’t have children herself, which is “surprising to some,” she said, but she feels that she has a different role: “offering the gift of self-awareness, connection to breath, safe, loving movement,
and self-honoring to expectant mamas — and these things are life-changing.” Whether a woman has been studying yoga for years or wants to start the practice after becoming pregnant, prenatal yoga is right for them, Mitchell explained: If a student already had tools like selfawareness and connection to breath from a previous yoga practice, prenatal yoga is a “new and beautiful environment to learn it when they’re breathing for two, learning for two, in their daily changing pregnant bodies. “When my mom practiced yoga, life was sweeter,” she said. “It made a huge impact on her, which made a huge impact on me. … I never heard anyone say that they would have been better served by parents who were less present and more anxious.” But it’s not only the physical practice of yoga itself that benefits new parents or mothers-to-be; the community that yoga class creates has a positive impact as well. “Studies that show that when expectant mamas have supportive community — church, a knitting group, yoga — their post-partum outcomes are greatly improved, regardless of socioeconomic class,” Mitchell said. One of the most rewarding parts of Mitchell’s job is when she sees “multiplegeneration friendships” that formed in class: mothers whose children now play with each other.
“I’ll sometimes run into groups of moms who were in my class who now are walking around with kids in strollers, kids playing together,” she said. “It’s the most rewarding thing. It’s really beautiful. I’m so very grateful.” Students have taken the initiative to get to know one another over the years, but one recent student stands out: Woodside resident Kristin Taylor, who started the Yoga Mamas potluck group. Taylor started going to Mitchell’s prenatal yoga class “pretty much as soon as I found out I was pregnant,” she said — at around the sixth to eighth week of her pregnancy. Around week 20, Taylor realized that she didn’t have friends who would have kids around the same time as her. She wanted a community of mothers who would be going through the same things at the same time she was. She asked Mitchell if she could make an announcement to see if any of her classmates wanted to go out to eat after class, and Mitchell gladly granted her permission. The first time, five or six women went to Tacuba, a nearby Mexican restaurant. From there, it evolved into larger, more regular meetups, usually potlucks hosted at various women’s apartments. They’ve gotten together at Astoria Bier and Cheese and had an impromptu picnic in Astoria Park. Now, most group members have babies; Taylor’s own son, Theo, is several months old. New members — both new mothers and moms-to-be — have connected with the group via The Yoga Room. And now, Taylor goes to another class at the studio: the Mommy & Baby class. (There’s also a Mommy & Toddler class for when kids get a bit older.) “I strongly encourage anyone and everyone to go to [prenatal yoga],” Taylor said. “It was nine months of practicing how to give birth and it was so helpful to me when I was actually in labor; I called up so many things from that class, like breathing and affirmations.” Taylor said that anyone who wants to join her Yoga Mamas potluck group can go to one of Mitchell’s classes and ask Mitchell to connect them.

As the summer kicks into full gear, so does the western Queens music scene. These four local bands embody the heat and chemistry that can be seen and felt when watching live music in our hood.

Dolly Dolly is a two-piece, semi-acoustic rock duo that is as cute and unique as their name. Margaret Horning, their lead vocalist, describes Dolly as "punk rock with ukuleles." Horning is joined by Dave Siegel, who adds layered vocals and guitar to the duo, and together they create a progressive, soothing and strong sound. Their music crosses an inspired mix of genres and decades combining the innocence of the ‘60s through the angst of the ‘90s. “Dolly has a very unique sound and we strive to remain that way,” Horning said. “We're a semi-acoustic surf rock duo who refuses to be pigeon-holed into anything typical.” The chemistry between the two good friends translates into a marriage of beautiful harmonies, unified riffs, and pretty pop hooks that come together to create a fresh, complex and satisfying experience.

Siegel is an 11-year Astoria local who cites Simon and Garfunkel, The Ramones and Neutral Milk Hotel as just a few bands that inspire him. Horning and Siegel are currently finishing up a self-produced album and are

Memoirs of Addiction A three-piece collaboration that gets the party going and will outlast you till closing time, Memoirs of Addiction has driving rhythms and a sexy, energetic, hard-hitting surge of sound. "Our music is a post-punk melodic baby whose parents may be a combination of The Cure, King Crimson, Cocteau Twins,
The Police, Radiohead and some other possibilities," explained lead singer and bass player D Sante. The band consists of friends since high school: D Sante, along with Astoria local Michael Rivera on drums and Sebouh Gemdjian on guitar. They layer sounds with synths and additional guitars. "Sebouh has a pedal rig akin to the Millenium Falcon,” Sante said. “We

also like to create a swirl of vocal harmonies when appropriate.” When describing their sound, Gemdjian explained, “One could say that our guitar effects pedals alone are a fourth band member. The drums and bass always anchor the sound to the dance floor, though. Add some weird samples to that and you’ve got our recipe.” Elaborating further, Gemdjian described the chemistry between the band as ”somewhere between becoming one super-efficient brain and total chaos. We’ve known each other since high school, so we’ve learned how to turn both extremes (and the balance between the two) into a party.” Their musical inspiration is “our own humanity,” Sante said. “We are fueled by the camaraderie and connection that blooms from ancient friendships. We are inspired by the music of our idols, both local and legendary. And we are striving to be better with every song we write: better musicians, better songwriters, better people.” Memoirs of Addiction is expecting to celebrate the release of a brand-new EP on Aug. 20 at Gold Sounds in Brooklyn. A sound that thrives on dynamic songs and fervent hooks, Grey Scale is a four-piece rock band that knows how to put on a show. “We feed off the crowd's energy and when they start dancing, we know we've done a good job,” said Brandon Glasgow, the band's lead singer, songwriter and rhythm guitar player. Fusing together rock ‘n’ roll, soul and an international pulse, the band has a hot sound: “It is our scorching rhythm section filled with North African and Latin influences, along with some fiery guitar solos thrown into the mix,” Glasgow said. The band said that they have a wide variety of influences across genres. While Glasgow is heavily influenced by the Beatles and ‘60s soul music, guitarist Ali Merghoub and Rifaat Hamou are from Algeria, so they bring a northern Africa component as well as a love for Pink Floyd. Plus, drummer Andres Fajardo, who is originally from Colombia, “can play just about any style from reggae to experimental metal," Glasgow explained. Grey Scale succeeds in creating a fusion of modern rock and soul which radiates during their live performances. You will be able to catch Grey Scale during the Between Two Bridges Music Festival hosted by the Astoria Music Collective. The festival will take place from Aug. 20 to 26, and Grey Scale will perform on Thursday, Aug. 23, at The Quays. Zoo Cryptic There is never a dull moment when watching Zoo Cryptic heat up the stage. Fun is the name of the game for this fourpiece rock band that veers toward the classical ‘90s grunge with a modern edge. "We don't really stick to any style,” guitar player Alec White explained. “So you never know what you'll hear with each song.”
With hard-hitting vocals by Nick Andrews that remind you of Pearl Jam, savagely intricate drums by Marcus Bravo reminiscent of The Red Hot Chili Peppers, progressive and consistent bass by Prachanda Thakuri, and tenacious, driving riffs by Alec White, the band keeps its live shows full of energetic, powerful songs, playing a mix of originals and classics.
The future is bright for Zoo Cryptic. “We'll finally be releasing an EP with both of our new and old material by the end of August. So we're really excited about that! As for shows, you can catch us all over the NYC area," Andrews said.

decade ago, Jackson Heights resident Reda Elabd followed his dreams and opened Central Park Pet Spa in Manhattan. He chose the location because he wanted to be in the center of the city. When it came time to open a second location, Elabd looked to his home borough of Queens, and on Oct. 1, 2017, Central Park Pet Spa opened in Astoria. Today, the Astoria location is their only location, for now. “We opened in Astoria because it was always a nice place to enjoy time and the neighborhood was friendly and safe,” Elabd said. “I felt it would be great to offer my services here.” Over the last year, the Astoria community has been welcoming of the business. Central Park Pet Spa hasn’t advertised that much, but “we believe [the] best advertisement is word of mouth,” Elabd said. Around half of their business has come from Manhattan, proving that their customers are loyal enough to trek to another borough for a pet grooming they trust. Central Park Pet Spa offers specialized grooming services for dogs and cats, inAUGUST 2018
cluding nail clipping, ear cleaning, wash and blow dry, brush outs, deshedding treatments, as well as special treatments for all types of skin conditions: dry or itchy skin, antifungal and antibacterial paw treatment. Upon request, medical shampoos can be used. “What makes us different is that we take [an] artistic approach in grooming our animals and we only hire people who share the love and patience at the same level as us,” Elabd said. “We want the animal to enjoy the process of grooming … this is our main goal.” According to the Central Park Pet Spa website, the Central Grooming Academy is coming soon. Elabd wants to pass his techniques that he has developed over the past 25 years to people who want to learn and have a career in this field.

am The Freckled Moose,” said chef and owner Peter Lyman when describing the name of his brand-new restaurant on 31st Avenue. Sandwiched between Bareburger and an apartment building, the sign will definitely make Astorians do a double-take as they walk up the block. With a cartoon moose head and Comic Sans font, the restaurant looks humble and laid-back, which is exactly the vibe Lyman was going for. “I really wanted a place that would be cozy, comfortable and would let people come in and feel like they had been invited to my house for dinner,” he said. “Our Wi-Fi password is ‘Welcome Home,’ one of our signature cocktails is called the Cordial Inviter [Catoctin Creek

Brandy, Giffard Crème de Peche, Cinzano Dry Vermouth]...I want everyone that walks through my door to feel like they’re coming to hang out.” As for the unique moniker, Lyman said close friends have been calling him “The Freckled Moose” for years, and it has quickly caught on. With Irish and Scottish heritage, the freckled part is understandable. But the moose? Definitely not what you’d expect. “Everyone up North knows that in a contest of moose versus car, the moose always wins,” the New England native explained. “I have been run over five times and have never been hurt. I’ve been backed over by cargo vans, hit by a cab in a crosswalk, everything.” Of course, besides just having a great name, a restaurant needs someone with a food background running the show — and Lyman is a high-end concierge turned self-taught chef. Working for five years for American Express Centurion Card holders and Abigail Michaels in Manhattan, he developed a palate for AUGUST 2018 I BOROMAG.COM

fine dining and travel, and his love for food culture increased tenfold. What began as hosting elaborate brunches for friends (with dishes like challah bread French toast with cinnamon whipped cream and hot apples) turned into the desire to one day open a cozy bistro or pub. So, when the opportunity

with his friend and now business partner Bryan Corbitt came about in Astoria, Lyman jumped at the chance. It didn’t hurt that he had already been living in the community for three years. He even gets to walk to work every day now. “I Iove talking to people. I love telling stories,” he said. “I’m here all the time and I’m getting to meet all of the people that live right here in the neighborhood.” Originally hailing from Massachusetts — which can be seen in the restaurant’s decor from sweet acorn centerpieces to wall art like a John McEnroe tennis racquet, sailboat keel and old-fashioned sled — Lyman has fond memories of spending holidays and summers at his grandparents’ farmhouse in Ashby, MA. His grandmother — who had a big influence on the restaurant — was an amazing cook and baker who made everything from scratch. When huge holiday feasts took place, Lyman remembers staying back from playing with his cousins and hanging out in the kitchen instead. He'd watch the kneading and the mixing, his grandmother adding a handful of this, a

pinch of that, never using measuring cups but instead cooking with her instincts, and with love. “When I got older I would go for weekends, spending time in the kitchen with my grandmother as she was sifting flour for the pancakes for breakfast and making everything from scratch,” he said. “She would show me what she was doing and even taught me how to make her famous cookies.” Classic New England cuisine and his grandmother’s use of fresh, quality ingredients played a huge part in Lyman’s menu development for The Freckled Moose. There are traditional items like New England Clam Chowder, of course, but also more creative takes like crab tater tots and lobster ravioli. You can even order “Baba’s Melt in Your Mouth Cookie Plate” for dessert—a delicious batch of brown sugar-based cookies that caramelize and fall apart in your mouth as you savor each bite (or shove the whole thing in right away). “I was just driving by and the moose with freckles on the sign really stood out, so I knew I had to stop by and check it out,” said Eddie Lopez, an Astoria resident who sat at the bar during the restaurant’s soft-opening at the end of July. “The crab tater tots are phenomenal — I’ve never seen these anywhere else before.” The rest of the recipes on the menu are ones Lyman has been working on for years and all fit into home-style, comfort food. Grilled cheese takes a turn with gruyere, fontina and cheddar on toast slathered with garlic butter and paired with homemade tomato soup, and one of his favorites is “Pete’s Stuffed Chicken” — a chicken breast loaded with baby spinach and goat cheese, wrapped in prosciutto and served with garlic lime green beans. Lyman plans to establish a savory brunch menu (with possible rosé deals) over the next few weeks. Alcohol was also an important element of the eatery, as Lyman is a selfproclaimed “beer guy.” Coming from a fan of supporting local business, expect draft beers from LIC Beer Project and Big aLICe Brewing, as well as more New England fare like Smuttynose. Happy hour is from 4 to 7 p.m. on weekdays and offers $1 off all draft beers and wine — which, with beer hovering around $6-7 and wines at $8-9, is quite a good deal. The cocktail list is also nothing to scoff at, with a diverse range of classic recipes made with select local and specialty
liquor. Lyman is fond of the aptly named “Pample-Moose,” a combination of Schofferhofer Grapefruit Beer, rum and Crème de Pamplemousse. If you’re looking for a new go-to spot, The Freckled Moose might be the perfect place for you — Lyman said he can’t wait to have regulars.

Walking into Thomas Kleinert and Ken Neil Hailey’s apartment feels like a fantastical dream. Coated in bright, bold colors, the entire space is playful and exudes whimsical fun. The sign on the front door reads “Bourbon Street” of New Orleans fame, alerting those who enter of what lies ahead.

leinert has lived in the same space for 26 years, and Hailey for 25. They share the apartment with “the biggest beagle in Astoria,” Annushka, and two cats: Katherine Hepburn and “possibly the oldest cat in Astoria,” 23-year-old Spencer Tracy. Together, the duo has transformed what was once a black-and-white den into the cozy space it is today. The apartment has character that only a well-lived-in apartment can: filled with memories and mementos from the past. “Our apartment has changed, the neighborhood has changed,” said Kleinert, who works at NYU’s Steinhardt school in admissions. “It was gray in here,” noted Hailey of the living room. “A very not-happy gray. You just came in and sat and got bored.” Hailey is a theater director in the city and recently opened Savannah Repertory Theatre in Georgia. The two have also

spent a lot of time in New Orleans, and the southern influences are palpable. “This book is what inspired us,” said Kleinert, presenting a coffee table book called “New Orleans: Elegance and Decadence.” They are drawn to the colors and the charm of the New Orleans style. Their living room is crimson with colorful drapes framing the windows, reflecting this style well. The room is full of art, knickknacks and plenty of seating. Everything is accented with a pop of color. Above the couch hang two framed pieces by Peter Max, known for his psychedelic pop art of the ‘60s. “When I was a little kid I had a Peter Max book of paper airplanes,” Hailey said, “so I knew him at a very early age.” “He kind of inspired our decorating a little bit,” Kleinert said, pulling out a Pe-

ter Max book signed by the artist himself. “‘Patriotic Pop,’ I call it.” On the opposite wall hang four smaller framed prints of George Rodrigue’s “Blue Dog.” “This is part of our Patriotic Pop,” Kleinert said about the dogs. “He’s a New Orleans artist. He does nothing but paint pictures of this dog over and over again. Our apartment is starting to take on this New York/New Orleans theme. But we have so many different interests it’s just —” “Everything sort of just happens,” Hailey finished. But they’ve found a good system: “He’s the decorator; I’m the designer,” Hailey said. Kleinert envisions things and spruces the room up, and Hailey will build furniture and rearrange to bring the vision to life. In their office space (which Kleinert calls
Hailey’s “Man Cave”), Hailey has built a murphy bed, obscured into a bookshelf by curtains. He’s also refurbished tables to cover the large radiators throughout the apartment. “Part of what our landlord likes is that we never ask for anything to be fixed,” Kleinert said. They also acquired most of their furniture from the street and at thrift stores, rarely paying full price for anything. “I don't pay retail for anything,” Kleinert said. “I embarrass Ken because I’ll tell people how little I paid for things.” Even much of the art and decorations throughout their apartment was a flea market find, a gift or something they’ve had for years. spanning from wall to wall and spilling over into the office. One wall of the office is decorated with framed posters from plays that Hailey has directed. Kleinert used to be into little stars as decoration, but now it’s more hearts — both shapes can be found throughout the rooms. It’s like a delightful “I Spy” book.

The kitchen is bright yellow and houses two giant vintage Italian posters lit with individual museum spotlights. Ornate dishes hang on the walls along with random knick-knacks from their travels. The hallway separating the kitchen and the living room is arguably the brightest, painted a vibrant orange all over — even the back of the front door, which is covered in postcards and pictures. Or maybe their bedroom takes the cake: it’s a lime green, arguably the last color one would pick for a bedroom, but it somehow works. “Okay, you want to know how we chose colors?” Kleinert asked. “We go to Home Depot, and there's a section called the ‘Oops Section.’ It’s when someone has bought a gallon of paint, they tried it, and they were like, ‘Nope, I don't like that.’” But their favorite “room” is right above them: their rooftop. The couple shares it with only one other tenant, so it feels private. They have it decked out with a hammock, table and chairs and a lounge chair. From up there you can see the Manhattan skyline in the distance. “This is like our sanctuary up here,” Kleinert said. “We don’t need Manhattan. There’s so much local stuff here.” They love to spend their evenings “roof sitting,” but when they want to go out, the perfect restaurant is right around the corner: “Sugar Freak! It’s got great New Orleans stuff,” Hailey said. “So that’s definitely one of our favorites.” AUGUST 2018 I BOROMAG.COM

‘World’s Fare’ Passport Series brings global flavors to LIC starting this September BY SUZANNE MONTEVERDI

aste dishes inspired by food from around the globe at a series of fun events coming to the Long Island City waterfront this fall. The World’s Fare Passport Series will take place on Sept. 9 and 10, Sept. 22 and 23, and Oct. 20 and 21 at 5-25 46th Ave., along Anable Basin. Each weekend will focus on the food, drink and music of Europe, the Americas and Asia, respectively. The series is a follow up to Festival Media’s “World’s Fare,” the massive food festival that drew more than 10,000 people to Citi Field who enjoyed food and drinks from over 100 vendors. The event was inspired by the iconic 1964-65 World’s Fair, which drew millions to Flushing Meadows-Corona Park to dine and view innovative exhibits. At each event, attendees will be able to enjoy a curated selection of food, drink and live music from the region. A panel of food experts will also be on hand to discuss the culture and cuisine of the area. Restaurants and vendors currently slated to serve at the events include
Barano, Guantanamera, Empanada Papa and Cryo Cream. The event was created by Joshua Schneps, founder of the LIC Flea & Food and Astoria Flea & Food markets and co-publisher of BORO. Schneps said the Passport Series will serve as a bridge to the second annual World’s Fare event, which will take place in the spring of 2019. “After the success of April’s event, we wanted to continue with the theme,” he said. “And because the overall theme of the World’s Fare is about embracing diversity, each one of those individual events will reflect a different region of the world.” Each event will run from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets start at $7 each. The event location is easily accessible from the 7, E, M, G and R trains, the Hunterspoint Avenue LIRR station and the NYC Ferry LIC and Hunters Point South stops. From Kastoria to Astoria Entrepreneur uses Greek herbs to create healing concoctions BY KAREN GOLDFARB
Hippocrates and Cleopatra – those luminaries of the ancient world – are among those said to have used wild herbs to bring themselves to health. Cleopatra, they say, used them to enhance her beauty and as an aphrodisiac to make her many conquests. Hippocrates, considered by many to be the father of modern medicine, especially liked ginger and mint. He exhorted his followers to stay true to the old remedies: “Foolish the doctor who despises knowledge acquired by the ancients,” he said.

lash forward a couple thousand years. Herbal remedies are regaining popularity, and there’s a new place to get your fix right here in western Queens. Loose Leaf (28-10 23rd Ave.), a charming and sunny café recently founded by Astorian Peter Zotis, is making available those ancient cures to help with modern woes. Zotis came to the United States from Kastoria, Greece, with his parents and two sisters in 1975. The family spent a short time in Woodhaven, Queens, before settling in Astoria, where Zotis has lived ever since.

A few years ago, Zotis, who used to work in construction, became mysteriously ill – and nothing seemed to help. “I went from physician to physician,” he said. But none of them could help him. He decided to return to Greece, where he hadn’t been for 18 years. His experience there, he said, was revelatory. “There is a huge resurrection now in Greece where people are going towards natural remedies,” he said. A holistic doctor he found there helped him with a combination of herbs such as St. John’s wort and sea buckthorn berries, which he said energized his system. “The berries are a little pungent in taste, but they

are fantastic. They have 191 nutrients and have been used from the time of Alexander the Great.” Zotis, who exudes gentleness and a low-key but definite joie de vivre, said he now feels fantastic and wanted to bring these ancient herbal remedies to his beloved Astoria community. He sells those herbs, superfoods and other assorted delicacies at Loose Leaf, where one can buy such herbs as milk thistle, peppermint and lemon balm; drink a mocktail with a delicious combination of blueberry, lavender and lemonade; or just have a cup of freshly brewed coffee. He can also offer suggestions for herbal
cures for whatever ails you, as well as superfoods. Customers can also go to his online store at shoplooseleaf.com to buy the herbs they need. Zotis also plans to expand nationally, with potential franchises across the country. Many of the herbs come from his hometown of Kastoria, a northern city at the foothills of the Balkan Mountains, between 3,500 to 5,000 feet above sea level. “There is very little industry so we have extremely pure land, very clean water,” he said. “These herbs and superfoods have been used for thousands of years and do great things for people. been a huge resurrection especially now – and in the past five years in Greece – and they are being rediscovered,” he said. Zotis also imports herbs from all over Europe. He even travels to Greece four times a year to pick wild herbs, since he has a wild cultivation license from the country’s Department of Agriculture.

While he doesn’t want to play favorites, he does have a few herbs of which he is especially fond. He loves St. John’s wort, which can help regulate moods and has antibiotic properties; tribulus terrestris, which promotes energy and balanced hormonal levels; and peppermint, which he said is “beautiful.” He is especially

excited about the possibilities of Mountain Tea. “The Germans have been doing quite a lot of research lately and there is a strain of it that helps with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease,” he said. “One of the two regions it comes from is Kastoria.” Zotis said he hopes people will not only have an “enjoyable” experience when they come to his shop but will also acquire a bit of knowledge about the exciting possibilities to create good health. He wants people to know that “there are other solutions. I came from a world where I believed what the doctor said only,” he said. “But once I started exploring I realized that there are other options available. Using these herbs has kept me healthy and strong. I feel great.” Zotis says he chose to open the shop in Astoria because of his love for his community. “I am a true Astorian,” he said.
