No costume yet? No problem. We enlisted the help of several local Halloween fanatics who shared their favorite costumes from years past, complete with their tips and tricks for creating the looks (page 37). Now that we’ve covered the tricks, let’s move onto the treats. You can find 380 pastries, 52 kinds of chocolates, and more at Biskoti, which took over the Flo Lounge location last month (page 20). Still hungry? Try urban desi eatery The Gully on Steinway, featuring dishes from places like Bangladesh, Delhi, Mumbai and South India (page 14). Then grab a drink at the newly redesigned Sweet Afton, celebrating 10 years in Astoria (page 32). To share news with us, email katrina@boromag.com. STREET STYLE

IN SEARCH OF LOST SUMMER Astoria photographer Zack Birthday (@zackbirthday) brought some coolness to the streets, pairing mustard and blue with the American sense of freedom. He described his style as “Sunday bum.”

Rocio (@rociouxd) defined her style as “summer Caribbean,” mixing tropical leaves and flowers with some geometric prints.

S

poiler alert: Winter is coming. The first boots, long sleeves and cardigans of the season have been spotted on the streets of Astoria. But warm weather isn’t going without a fight; the optimistic spirit of summer lives on through prints and fun details.

Bronx resident Judy Ann (@judaay_t) displayed her Sunday brunch style with a flair. She went with a bold neon gingham print: utility meets chic.

Thom Browne served as inspiration for Jackson Heights resident Shinyee Seet (@shinyayyyyyy), who displays a versatile and yet personal look. Thom couldn’t have done it better.

Kareem (@keemie_von_dore1) showcased vibrant characters from “Sesame Street and updated them into current street style. Fun, relaxed and playful.

Astoria resident Cindy Gonzalez (@foreverciin) defines her style as casual and sporty. A black floral print gives an edge to this easy look, combining key trends with personal styling.

utumn is here, bringing warm-toned leaves and gourds, warm sweaters and — as of the first few days of October — warm weather. We asked our readers to tag us (@boromagazine) in their Instagrams of fall in Astoria, Long Island City and Sunnyside, and submissions included vibrant foliage, a foggy view of the Triborough Bridge, Halloween décor and lots and lots of pumpkins. One resident even snapped a shot of her new “neighbor,” a squirrel, amongst fall leaves. Here are some of our favorite submissions.

FOOD + DRINK

Authentic Dishes, Vibrant Décor BY JESSICA MILITELLO

The Gully is the latest edition to Steinway Street, an area known for its great shopping, cafes and hookah lounges in the heart of Astoria. The new “urban desi” eatery — another term for Indian Punjabi or Southeast Asian food, according to one of the owners — offers the best of a variety of dishes from places like Bangladesh, Delhi, Mumbai and South India.

14

OCTOBER 2019

T

he restaurant officially opened in the last week of August and in celebration of their grand opening, the restaurant held a ribbon cutting event that featured performances from two artists from the United Kingdom: Mumzy Stranger, a British Bangladeshi singer and songwriter, and Nish, a singer of Bangladeshi descent. The lively celebration was a packed event and was a great way to “bring the street flavor” and introduce the area to the restaurant’s colorful atmosphere and vibrant dishes.

Jashim Ullah, one of the five owners of The Gully, who are all longtime friends and business partners, explained that they wanted to make sure they were bringing something to the neighborhood that pays special homage to the Southeast Asian culture along with delicious dishes for anyone to indulge in. “We wanted to do something very different in the community,” Ullah said. “To be able to bring a breath of fresh air to the area and bring the old-school back a little bit, and we definitely wanted to bring that retro feel back to Astoria.” The five owners — Razib Hasan, Sazzad Hossain, Iqbal Ali, Naved Ahmed and Jashim Ullah — are business partners on several different restaurants throughout New York, including Nur Thai and Sugar N Coal in Woodhaven, and Indi Thai on Allen Street in the Lower East Side. While all five young men are from different parts of New York, Astoria has a significant meaning for the owners, especially since a few of them had worked in the neighborhood in years prior.

“We liked Astoria so much,” Ullah said. “And we also did events here going back years ago, so it’s just kind of like [going] back to the old neighborhood.” The restaurant's name, The Gully, means "the street" — fitting because the focus of the menu is on street food from Southeast Asia. The Gully's renditions of these dishes are both delicious and authentic. By creating a menu with the best flavors from different countries, the restaurant offers the chance to “introduce different cuisines all on one menu to give [customers] a variety,” Ullah said. The menu features dishes such as the lamb burger made with ground marinated lamb patty, seasoned with cilantro garlic aioli, and served with chips. Another option is the shrimp malai curry, which is made with prawn and simmered in creamy coconut milk and traditional spices. The butter chicken consists of marinated dark and white meat chicken which is slow cooked in a creamy and buttery cashew nut tomato sauce. But so far, one of the biggest hits on the

FOOD + DRINK

menu has been the chicken tikka mac ‘n’ cheese. The dish is a unique take on the traditional chicken tikka masala paired with macaroni and cheese made with a three-cheese sauce. This creative dish comes out hot and creamy with delicious morsels of chicken tikka and cheese that sumptuously oozes as soon as you dig your spoon into the plate before melting in your mouth. Aside from the tasty dishes that The Gully currently has to offer, there will be even more delicious bites to look forward to in the seasons ahead such as warm, heartier dishes for the winter and cool, refreshing plates for the hot summer season. So far, Astorians are eating up every bite of what The Gully has to offer. The interior of the restaurant is just as colorful as the menu, its walls ornate with murals of prominent Bollywood stars of the ‘80s and ‘90s, such as actors

16

OCTOBER 2019

Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha, along with symbols of Queens, like the Queensboro Bridge. The ceiling features images of over 230 movie posters of ‘80s and ‘90s films from different countries like India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. The unique artwork is aesthetically pleasing and a thoughtful homage to the hundreds of films it portrays. Guests who are familiar with these films can look at the posters and reminisce, while others can discover a new genre of classic films. The Gully doesn't just offer tasty, authentic dishes from different backgrounds; it's truly committed to honoring the food, culture and history of the various cultures that comprise Southeast Asia. This is a spot that should definitely draw patrons for its delicious food and turn curious passersby into regulars with The Gully’s colorful décor and lively energy.

t Biskoti Bakery and Café, dessert isn’t an afterthought to a meal; it’s the main event. The restaurant café offers a fine dining experience centering around dessert and coffee, inviting you to sit down with friends and family and indulge your sugar cravings. The café opened in mid-September on 30th Avenue, taking over the space previously occupied by Flo Lounge. It features over 380 pastries along with more than 52 kinds of chocolates, as well as freshly baked bread, coffee and more treats. The café is open from early in the morning at 7 a.m. all the way to midnight for Astorians who might have a craving to satisfy a late-night sweet tooth. Owner Tommy Stagias, who grew up in Astoria, wanted to bring a unique and special experience for the community to be able to enjoy. “I love my neighborhood,” Stagias

said. “I grew up here and I’ve seen the changes over the years. It’s becoming more people that like to try new things, and Mediterranean pastries were missing from Astoria. This [café] is unique, besides the look — I’m talking about the ingredients.” While Stagias grew up in Astoria, he worked at a bakery before paying his way through school to become a baker. With Biskoti, he was finally able to realize his dream of owning his own bakery. He has made it a point to be exact down to every detail of each treat, making an exceptional experience for guests who come to indulge. The aesthetically pleasing design

and décor of the café make it clear that guests are in for a special experience as soon as they approach the restaurant. The café’s exterior seating area is decorated with colorful flowers and shrubbery. As guests walk into the cozy indoor seating area, there are brightly lit cases filled with fresh, carefully made pastries. Biskoti’s 380 pastry offerings include chocolate mousse, 15 different kinds of cheesecake, 52 different biscotti and 27 kinds of Mediterranean pitas. The café carries large, thick slices of classic baklava, which is authentically prepared with real honey and a walnut filling. There are also quarter bites of baklava with a variety of fillings, and the small size makes it easy to sample a few.

22

OCTOBER 2019

Stagias also explained a key component to preserving the freshness of their baklava, which comes from using the proper technology and care at the café: “The refrigeration comes from the bottom,” Stagias said. “The reason being if you cool it from the top, the filling becomes mushy.” The café’s chocolates are also made inhouse, and the 52 varieties include peanut, walnut, strawberry, cherry, peanut butter and more. The café carries their own brand of coffee beans, and it’s worth making a visit just to try the cappuccino. The café uses a new machine to print beautiful images and designs onto the froth. Stagias certainly has no plans of

stopping at one storefront; he plans to open more Biskoti locations in the future, and his sights are set on Westbury, Long Island. Until then, Biskoti seems to be well on its way to becoming a great addition to the neighborhood and a delightful spot to share happy memories with friends and family. As for the recipe for Biskoti’s continued success, according to Stagias, the answer is simple: “We have great ingredients, great atmosphere. Come down and enjoy your coffee, outdoor or indoor,” Stagias said. “We’ve got a good European environment and that was missing from Astoria to me; somewhere with the right ingredients and the right refrigeration.”

Drink to a Decade Astoria’s Sweet Afton celebrates 10th anniversary with a  facelift and a unique brew BY TAMMY SCILEPPI

32

OCTOBER 2019

Super-popular neighborhood bar Sweet Afton got a new look for its 10th birthday, courtesy of a Wes Anderson set decorator.

Designer Kris Moran, who has worked as set decorator for famous director/ screenwriter Anderson — in addition to other projects, like Todd Phillips’ newly released “Joker” film with Joaquin Phoenix — was the creative mind behind the bar’s facelift. Subtle, cool changes that enlivened the space include a mural inspired by the River Afton (by Brooklyn

artist Mackenzie Younger), tile mosaics on the floor, vintage light fixtures that bring out the warm wood, and more. “They were looking to take a bar loved by a decade of loyal patrons — a home away from home to many — and celebrate its 10th birthday; escort it into its 10th year in a new suit, without anyone noticing too much,” Moran explained. “We cleaned it up around the edges and behind the ears and added some color into the bones,” she continued. “On [owner] Ruairi Curtin's suggestion, we decided to change the flooring in half of the bar from poured concrete to custom designed hex tile, reminiscent of the flooring in the 1800s in his home country [Ireland]. We did a couple large strokes that left 90 percent of what was there in place ... to make a swell impact." So, if you haven’t already, stop by and check out their smashing revamp and taste their compelling 10th anniversary brew — on tap for a limited time starting later this OC TOB E R 2 0 1 9 I B OR OM AG. fall. If you’re located north of Astoria Boulevard, you can find the brew at sister bar The Bonnie as well. Sweet Afton teamed up with Mikkeller (the acclaimed, cutting-edge international brewers have a taproom at their only NYC spot, in Citi Field) on their limited-edition, special recipe brew, and put it out to the bar’s Instagram followers to name the beer. After getting nearly 200 “pretty amazing responses,” they chose “Time Afton Time.” Mikkeller head brewer Richie Saunders, who works at the Citi Field location, describes the beer as “a bright and crisp American-style lager, hopped exclusively with Citra to provide a mild, but modern, fruity twist.” While you’re shooting the breeze and sampling Sweet Afton’s well-known craft beer offerings and honest cocktails, don’t forget to order what has been described as the neighborhood's best burger since 2009. That’s when visionary owner and Ireland native Ruairi Curtin first opened the doors to what was considered a truly “new wave” bar, with

34

his savvy business partners (all young Irish immigrants) — after opening popular Manhattan bars Bua (East Village, 2004) and Wilfie & Nell (West Village, 2008). It was just what Astoria’s young creative community was craving. "In 10 years, the neighborhood has changed immensely. When I moved to Astoria 20 years ago, I couldn't understand the lack of nice bars and restaurants,” said Curtin, who also owns The Bonnie (Astoria), as well as The Penrose (Upper East Side), and is co-owner of The Spaniard (West Village), The Wren (Bowery), Bua and Wilfie & Nell. “For myself and my friends who worked in Manhattan and lived in Astoria, the options of neighborhood bars were pretty grim — not much beyond the dingy old Irish bars that had been there for 30 years or more — which are wonderful in their own way, but not always what you were looking for,” Curtain said. "The space was originally a tobacco warehouse when the building was first built; Sweet Afton is an old Irish tobacco brand. We also love the

Robert Burns [national poet of Scotland] angle too, though." He added: “We’re proud to be one of the very first more forward-thinking restaurants and bars to demonstrate that Astoria is more than just a sleepy, working-class neighborhood across the river from Manhattan.” To celebrate Sweet Afton’s success, Curtin decided that a refreshing redesign was in order. “I firmly believe you’ve always got to be reinventing yourself as a business. You stand still, you die: it’s always important to be relevant as the world changes around you,” he said. “But at the core, I don’t think Sweet Afton has changed at all. Our original regulars have grown up a bit, but essentially we are the same Sweet Afton that opened 10 years ago, with the same principles: great food, great drinks and great staff in a friendly, welcoming atmosphere." Beloved, longtime bartender Stu Whalley, who bravely battled lymphoma last year, was back behind the bar during Sweet Afton’s anniversary bash at the end of August. Thankfully, he's in remission now, living in Forest Hills and working at Silver Light Tavern in Brooklyn (the new spot from Sweet Afton's original coowner Mike Krawiec). “It was very strange to be back at Afton after almost two years — and two very intense years at that — but great to see people I've not seen in a while," Whalley said. Back in the day, Sweet Afton was a real trendsetter: the first of an exciting new wave of modern, hipster bars in Astoria (without TVs), where you could hang out with old and new friends and drink cask ale and artisanal cocktails, surrounded by the warmth of exposed brick and reclaimed wood. “Honestly, when my husband and I moved to Astoria from San Francisco that year [2009], Sweet Afton became our local because it felt so much like the spots we loved on the West Coast,” communications manager Chelsea Morse recalled. “The design refresh is really helping the space grow up a little bit but stay true to its cozy neighborhood vibe.”

Fit for All BY SAMANTHA WANDERER

Three sister fitness studios in Long Island City are focused on meeting the needs of their wide range of clients — from workout newbies to fitness fanatics, from the young to the old, and even to pregnant women. The Yoga Room, Workout Factory and PilatesWorks have been providing locals with a variety of workouts for different fitness goals since 2003, when The Yoga Room launched in LIC. Since then, Workout Factory and PilatesWorks have opened separate locations, and The Yoga Room has also expanded to Astoria. The studios draw clients from as far away as Manhattan’s Upper West Side, explained Jennifer Batson, manager of both Yoga Room locations. Many who join remain members for years. Victoria Holmes, director of marketing and community outreach for all three studios and the studio manager at Workout Factory, said people stick with the studios because they are different from franchised workout companies. “Why are we different?” Holmes asked. “Because we are so community driven and so focused on the individuals.” This commitment to improving individuals’ fitness levels applies to all ages, from college students to older adults. Batson said she has seen men and women in their 60s and 70s not only complete, but excel in workouts. “They are inspirational. They can outpace me in classes,” Batson said. “These workouts are for everybody: male, female, just starting to work out, or have been training your whole life in strength and conditioning,” Holmes said. No matter what kind of workout you’re looking for, you can probably find it at one of the three studios. Workout Factory’s offerings include two types of spin classes — TRXFire and

Bootcamp. PilatesWorks, which had originally been housed with Workout Factory, moved to its own studio three years ago and offers several classes that all use Pilates apparatus. The Yoga Room has a large variety in classes, offering vinyasa yoga, barre fit, hot yoga and more for people of all fitness levels. The yoga studio also caters specifically to pregnant women with prenatal and postnatal classes that involve both mother and baby. “Strength and conditioning training is essential in building the strength, stability and cardiovascular endurance you need before, during and after pregnancy,” said Alexandra Redelico, certified personal trainer and fitness instructor at Workout Factory. Women who had been working out at the studios often stay with the studios throughout their pregnancies, continuing their fitness practices to varying degrees. One mom from Workout Factory even continued working out until she was 39 weeks pregnant: “Staying active helped immensely in my recovery,” Allison Rowoth said. “I was back at Workout Factory week six postpartum.” Aside from their regular offerings, the studios make an effort to engage with the community. This summer, The Yoga Room brought free yoga and bootcamp classes to parks in both Long Island City and Astoria. Both The Yoga Room and Workout Factory participated in Long Island City’s first Sweat Crawl, which brought participants to different studios in the area and ended at a local pub. All three studios will continue to participate in local events in the future, hosting charity events and yoga teacher trainings. Queens residents show off their best Halloween costumes BY ALLISON KRIDLE

When the leaves turn crispy and sunset-hued and the air feels refreshingly chilly, many people see those as the first few signs of fall (you know, the “pumpkin everything” folks). Then, there are the people who immediately realize they need to figure out what costume they’ll don to prowl the city streets on Halloween. Whether it’s homemade or store bought, a costume lets you be someone else for a  day and show off your creativity. We talked to 10 western Queens residents and Halloween fanatics who walked us through the process of creating a favorite costume from past years. One scoured eBay for the perfect suit, while another took four to five days making a DIY Pinhead cap for a “Hellraiser” ensemble. Prepare to be spooked.

Why dress as a superhero when you can be a villain? Astoria resident Mallory Campbell decided to be the Joker’s BFF, Harley Quinn, for Halloween a few years ago. “All of my favorite costumes are Batman related and most of the time, I do something to make the costume ‘my own.’ That way, it's set apart from a store-bought costume,” Campbell said. Campbell’s creepy ensemble certainly stands out amongst the hundreds of Harley Quinn costumes you may find online. She was also very thrifty and used everyday materials like duct tape and saran wrap. “I used saran wrap and red and purple duct tape to create the corset and boot covers. I wore an old top, a red bra and a

purple bra overlapping, medical gloves, fishnets and face paint. I made a nurse's cap and ID tag from some cardstock I had laying around and pulled my hair up into two high, tight pigtails,” Campbell said. The Batman fan and actress suggests if you want to recreate the outfit, to wrap your boots and midsection in saran wrap before you use the duct tape.

“Additionally, yes, I know that Harley is blonde. I went the cheap route. I like the idea of a brunette Harley, though. It gives me hope that I'll play her someday,” Campbell said. OCTOBER 2019 I BOROMAG.COM

Pinhead from “Hellraiser” The appearances of staple horror movie villains like Jason, Freddy Kruger and Michael Myers have nothing on Pinhead from "Hellraiser." Astorian Sherri Keveson saw the opportunity to dress as one of the most evil and menacing characters and totally nailed Halloween last year (pun intended). “It was really fun going out dressed like that. I’m usually a very bright, upbeat person, so I got to take on a whole different role. [I] marched in the [Halloween] parade [in the Village] and had a ton of people ask to take pictures with me, which was also a lot of fun,” Keveson said. Keveson’s Pinhead drew even NY1’s attention as she was asked to be pulled aside for a brief interview. She said they asked her what it took to make her outfit and how long the process was. “I had to make what looked like nails out of Q-tips (I [took] the cotton tips off, melted the ends down into flat surfaces, and then painted them silver). Then I had to paint all of the details onto a bald cap and then insert the nails,” Keveson said, adding that the process took four to five days. “The makeup itself took several hours,” she continued. “I had to paint the lines onto my face so that they’d line up perfectly with the bald cap, and then I had to pin the rest of the nails onto my face

Sometimes the best costumes come from the most terrifying or famous scenes — like when the character Melanie Daniels gets attacked by birds in the Hitchcock horror film “The Birds.” Astoria resident Sue Elizabeth made sure she got this iconic scene right when she dressed like Daniels for Halloween last year. “I got great reactions to the costume. My friends had fun taking pictures of my various attack poses, and people at different parties really got it. The best part was even if you didn't know what movie or character I was, I was still a woman being attacked by birds so it works all around,” Elizabeth said. The costume was a joint effort with her and her husband. While she enjoyed shopping at the craft store, Michael’s, to get the killer birds and sewing them onto her suit,

she equally relished going to Abracadabra with her spouse to get scar wax and fake blood so he could paint scratches on her face. “The hardest part was scrolling through eBay finding the right suit, in the right color and for fairly cheap. The rest of it was getting birds to sew to the suit jacket, getting hair clips to attach the birds to my hair and scar wax and blood for the bird scratches. I also used some Velcro pieces attached to the cuffs so the birds would stand up straight. When I brought my arm up it looked like they were going to peck my eyes out. And last was going to the hairdresser for a bouffant (that is outside of my skill set when it comes to hair),” Elizabeth said. If you’re looking to be a bird-victim for Halloween, Elizabeth recommends setting an eBay alarm for green suits and finding pictures to get Daniels’ hair right. Also, find birds with wired feet so it is easier to wrap around clips.

(which was a lot harder than I thought it would be). I made the skirt and the little jacket with the high collar.” If you so dare to remake this look for Halloween, Keveson advises you to get to work ASAP and to buy a second bald cap in case you make any mistakes.

Bad Bi*ch Flapper

Photos courtesy of Frankie Crognale

What can be more exhilarating than finding your Halloween costume piece by piece by thrifting or working in a secondhand clothing shop? Astoria resident and former Buffalo Exchange employee Frankie Crognale found her entire Flapper costume last year when she worked at the store off Ditmars. “The majority of my outfit was very easy to find. Slip dress, fishnet tights, pointed loafers and feather boa,” Crognale said. “On the day of my Halloween party, I was in search of a flapper headband that wasn’t just a sequin band to go around my head. Right before I was about to leave for the day, my manager called me up to the buy counter and quietly placed a beautiful bejeweled flapper headdress in front of me. Needless to say, I flipped out only a lot. This was the cherry on top of my already adorable costume.” Crognale is all about finding pieces second-hand and recommends anyone putting this costume together to do the same. It's healthy not only for your wallet, but also for the environment. “There are always unique pieces at vintage or thrift stores that you wouldn’t find in a premade costume kit. This allows you to add your own flair. You want to wear

your costume, not have your costume wear you,” Crognale said. The Astorian got her ‘20s prohibition-era inspiration from doing the musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie” when she was in high school. She said, “This is what sparked my

admiration for the fashions of the prohibition era. I’ve always had an affinity for quirky fashion and anything related to disrupting the norm, and the ‘20s coupled these two things together to create the epitome of the true bad-bi*ch era.” OCTOBER 2019 I BOROMAG.COM

and borrowed a beret from a friend. I went out to a local costume shop to get whiteout contacts. The hardest part was the sash: I sewed it together myself, and bought and sewed the patches on. I’m an OK seamstress, so it took about a week, and I had to start over a couple times, but it ended up working great,” Berry said. For two years, Berry has had a picture of the costume on her Tinder profile to see if anyone recognizes the character and only two people told her they knew what her costume is. Who knew listening to a mystery-thriller podcasts could win you points on a dating app?

Bob Ross and His Painting Astoria resident Kim Petrone and her husband Anthony decided to go as Bob Ross and his painting because they went through a phase of watching the zen painter on Netflix to relax. “We always march in the [Village] parade and always pick something that means something to us personally so we

Putting together a costume with a visual can be hard enough, and creating a costume just based on vocal description seems unimaginable. But for Astoria resident Hannah Berry, the challenge to make an Eternal Scout costume from the podcast “Welcome to Night Vale” was worth it. “I chose the costume because I am a big fan of the podcast, and I thought that episode was one of the best. I was really proud of it; I like having very small, niche costumes that are well executed. It was also my first time wearing costume contacts which was really fun,” Berry said. Just in case you need a little background info about this niche reference, the thrilling podcast began in 2012 and is about the events that happen in the fictional town of Night Vale. “Not many people knew exactly who I was, but that was OK. I think one person across the two days I wore the costume recognized it, and they thought it was awesome. Most people were like, ‘Cool dead Girl Scout costume!’ I worked a waitressing shift in costume on Halloween and a lot of my tables were really freaked out by the white eye. A few people asked me if it was real,” Berry said. A large portion of Berry’s scout costume was sewed, while many of her pieces either came straight from her closet or online. “[The preparation] was not too bad — I had the shirt and tights. I ordered a skirt,

can really dive in and have fun with it,” Petrone said. While the entire costume required an intricate attention to detail, the easel took about three days to get right. Petrone had to find a way it could hold the painting and allow them to walk comfortably. “[My] costume started with four large document holders that I cut and fashioned together with soft rope both behind my head to rest atop my shoulders and around my lower back in order to carry and hold the ‘easel’ legs in place when walking in the parade,” Petrone said. “I then ordered an actual Bob Ross painting and pasted it to a sturdy cardboard backing and then affixed it to each of the two ‘easel poles.’ “Once I lined it all up and all the paste dried, I cut a hole for my face and then added the easel shelf that consisted of actual Bob Ross paint and brush from his website and a small Bob Ross purse I got from Etsy. On the day of Halloween I put it on and tried my best freehand to paint my face in a way that blended into the painting with regular Halloween face paint you can purchase in CVS.” The actual Bob Ross costume was store bought and the clothes were Anthony’s. He used the fake belly he had from previous costumes that the couple kept for future use.

Marilyn Monroe in Space

Photos courtesy of Mitch Fehrle

If you work in fashion like Astorian Mitch Fehrle, then you might enjoy making your friends’ fierce Halloween outfits just as much as you like creating yours. Fehrle’s friend told him she wanted to be “Marilyn Monroe in space,” and he designed a costume that would suit her and her imagination. “Marilyn was a bad-ass curvy icon of her time and so is my friend, so the costume worked perfectly. I saw a fashion designer (Rie Hosokai) that used animal balloons in her work. Once I saw her dresses, I knew that technique would be perfect for the costume,” Fehrle said. According to Fehrle, the materials were pretty much just the animal balloons and an air pump. The designer spent two hours on Halloween night tying the balloons together (the balloons only have about 48 hours of life in them after inflating). “It’s a good idea to do a little practicing with the balloons before the big night. I did some prototypes figuring out how to tie the dress since I was going for a specific character. If you're not super experienced with animal balloons, don't fret. Just the novelty of an animal balloon costume was interesting enough for people,” Fehrle said. Because of the nature of the floating balloons, it looks like the dress is flaring up similar to Monroe’s famous steam vent picture. Once people were told it was “Marilyn in space,” they got it right away. “The dress was huge to walk around with at parties, and we popped a few balloons as the night went on to make it into a mini skirt. My friend made some ‘50s housewife giggles like some of Marilyn’s characters during the ‘wardrobe change.’ It was a great bit,” Fehrle said. OCTOBER 2019 I BOROMAG.COM

or 2 1/2 years, Tricia Santomasso Hopkins and Sean Hopkins have been decorating and redecorating their apartment to accommodate holidays, life events and changing preferences — and that’s the way they like it. Homes tend to feel familiar, mostly because each relies on the same types of furniture and household objects. But the only familiar thing about their home, they said, is change. They treat their apartment like a movie set with changing scenes, swapping wall prints to match the holiday season and choosing props and knickknacks to go with each room — fitting, since the two Astoria residents are actors-turned-audiobook narrators. Many of Tricia and Sean’s household items are homemade. All are deeply personal. Their

fireplace mantel had previously belonged to a friend, who had used it as a clothing rack before moving. That’s when Tricia and Sean adopted and refurbished it into the mantel in their living room. The couple installed hanging plants in front of a window that overlooks their street, modeling the structure after something similar they’d seen in a magazine. Across the hanging plants, framed photos make up what the two refer to as their “ancestry wall.” Some of the photo subjects don googly eyes in place of their real ones, a temporary — but still deeply personal — Halloween addition. Sean’s mom, a preschool teacher, gave the couple the googly eyes. “It was right before Halloween last year, and Tricia was decorating at that time and she said, ‘I think I can find a use for these,’” he

said. “So I came in one day and I just kept finding them over the course of a week.” One wall of their home office, which was once their bedroom, is lined with masks dating back to as early as 16th century commedia dell’arte — an Italian theater form dedicated to improv. But not all of the masks are Italian. Some come from Nicaragua, Japan and China. Some are travel souvenirs, while others are gifts from loved ones. Yet-to-be-hung framed maps rest on the floor in one office corner — evidence, Sean said, that the decor is constantly changing. Spooky prints in the living room and kitchen pay homage to upcoming OCTOBER 2019 I BOROMAG.COM

INTERIOR DESIGN Halloween festivities. The prints will stay up until Nov. 1, Tricia said, before they’re replaced by the everyday “botanical images” she stores directly underneath, which come out on days without holidays or celebrations. In the kitchen, there’s a designated tea corner. The couple stores tea boxes in a storage unit whose cubbies magically fit the teas, “almost as if it was made for this,” Tricia said. She painted it herself after having found it on the street. Perhaps the most unexpected feature is a home audio studio concealed as a closet. Sean lined the inside with soundproof fab-

ric. But the couple recently acquired another home studio — an external one that sits in their office space next to the masks. Sean and Tricia decided to take on audiobook narration to have more stability and worklife balance, which proved especially helpful when their first child, Lyra, came along last June. Besides, it’s just like acting, Tricia said: “You get to play everything when you’re doing an audiobook. You’re playing the old grandma and the dragon and the whatever it is. It’s all different genres and always an adventure.” But with two studios, one of which is a closet, space can get tight. “We’ve found

interesting ways to create storage spaces,” Tricia said, highlighting that off-season clothing gets tucked away into another closet or into the studio closet along its highceilinged walls. Another way to circumvent space restrictions? “I’m a purger,” Tricia confessed. “I purge often and I’m cutthroat.” Books, for example, get recycled or donated if they weren’t opened in a while. While New York City homes are usually tight on space, neither of the two minds. They moved to Astoria for its proximity to work opportunities. “This is really the place to be for audio-

books because all the book publishers are here in New York,” according to Sean. A guidebook first prompted Tricia to look for apartments in Astoria nine years ago when she was living in the Upper West Side. “In this guidebook, it said if you like the smell of fresh bread wafting from bakeries and you like seeing produce stands on the street and a friendly neighborhood, you’re going to want to move to Astoria,” she said. Also, Tricia noted, “Halloween in Astoria is fantastic,” citing it as another reason she loves the neighborhood. Lyra’s room is located within their room. When she was born, Tricia and Sean moved their bedroom from the other end of the house, where the office is now, to be closer to the baby. Lyra’s room twinkles with gleaming star decals, arranged in the formation of the night sky surrounding the constellation of the same name. A door in the office space leads to Tricia and Sean’s favorite part of the house: an expansive backyard that the family uses to have breakfast on warm days. And it could be Lyra’s favorite part, too, considering her most beloved hobby is watering the plants every morning. (She also likes to water inanimate objects, Tricia said.) Though they’re comfortable in their home, Sean and Tricia predict change to come, especially when Lyra gets old enough to decide how she wants her room to look. “I’m excited for when she has her own ideas. I’m excited to change it,” Tricia said. But one thing’s for certain: the apartment will always be home to their own creations.

The Engineering Marvel of North Shore Towers and Country Club In addition to the luxury living, many amenities, firstrate security, and year-round fun activities that North Shore Towers and Country Club offers its residents and members, another benefit is its design and the engineering team that keeps it all humming. What helps make that possible is Sal Castro, North Shore Towers and Country Club chief engineer, who has been working there for a total of 42 years, including as chief engineer for the past 34 of those years. Castro joined the North Shore Towers and Country Club staff in 1977 and, prior to being named chief engineer, served as watch engineer for three years operating the energy plant there on various night shifts and energy plant foreman for five years leading maintenance repair crews working on generators, boilers, chillers, water pumps, and cooling towers.

Sal Castro, North Shore Towers and Country Club chief engineer (center), surrounded by a great maintenance repair crew who are committed to providing uninterrupted services to the residents.

The end result: Residents “share in that common area energy savings of approximately $1 million per year, reflected in the maintenance charges,” Castro says. For Castro, it’s been “rewarding learning the everchanging needs” of North Shore Towers and “helping to design upgrades and retrofits to meet those needs, and managing the construction of replacement equipment after keeping the old equipment running 40 years,” he notes. Among the many reasons Castro says he’s enjoyed working at North Shore Towers is, “we have a great staff who are committed to providing uninterrupted services to our residents.” The power plant department staff includes a total of 11 people, including one person who

The North Shore Towers design is “unique because we were never connected to the utility grid, so we generate all of our own power on site,” Castro says. “On one hand, this makes the 24/7 operation critical, and this can be challenging. But we have 100 percent redundancy of generators, so while three are needed at any one time, there are always three more ready to go if needed, increasing the reliability.” “On the other hand,” he notes, “during the times there were long grid outages in the Long Island and New York City area, North Shore Towers had constant power, which can be rewarding.” In fact, the North Shore Towers plant reliability has, on average, been “generally better than grid power reliability over the last 40 years,” he says. Further explaining the unique design of the North Shore Towers energy system, he says its co-generators “simultaneously generate electricity and free steam that is used to heat all the water for domestic use in the three buildings, as well as some of the heat and air conditioning.” The local combined generator design, meanwhile, is “more efficient without the long transmission lines, and actually uses less fuel and has less overall emissions than the same energy generated by a utility and a separate boiler for hot water,” he says.

handles all overnight and weekend shifts, so the residents of North Shore Towers are taken care of around the clock, seven days a week, he notes. While there are “normal equipment breakdowns, they go largely unnoticed by the residents, as standby equipment is quickly put in use before any effect of equipment downtime can be felt,” Castro says. Glen Kotowski was the General Manager at North Shore Towers on Aug. 14, 2003, when 50 million people in eight eights and Canada lost electric power for an extended period. “As the darkness of night set in, I took an elevator ride to the roof to observe few lights, other than vehicle headlights, as I looked at Manhattan to the West, Long Island to the east, to the north and to the south and saw the eerie darkness,” he recalls. “Since we are not

connected to the electrical grid, the 3,000 residents of North Shore Towers were virtually unaffected other than by the hundreds of visitors who saw lights shining in the darkness, following our lights to find and enjoy the use of one of our two restaurants, our movie theater and our air conditioning to stay cool on a hot summer day.” A second day that’s vivid in Kotowski’s memory is Oct. 29, 2012, when many people in the tristate area lost power for days and weeks due to Hurricane Sandy. “Our population temporarily doubled to about 6,000 as friends and family members of our residents sought refuge at North Shore Towers, which maintained full power, water and heat during and after the storm,” he recalls. “Once again, our restaurants were available to feed the masses and our in-house staff performed exceptionally to provide additional service needs of our guests while continuing to provide service to our residents. As a retired NYPD Deputy Inspector, I have to say it was visionary when North Shore Towers was built to install an independent power plant capable of maintaining power during natural disasters and emergencies. The fact that our equipment and feeder cables are not exposed to the elements makes us significantly less susceptible to the loss of power during storms. North Shore Towers is fortunate to have the dedication of our Chief Engineer, Sal Castro and his staff to do an outstanding job keep the power plant operational and well maintained.” Of course, in addition to its first-rate engineering and security staff, North Shore Towers and Country Club offers an 18-hole golf course, five Har-Tru tennis courts, indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna, steam rooms, a hot tub, a state-of-the-art gym offering classes including Pilates, and many other activities. The Club offers classes that include boxing and Pilates Reformer, a special exercise machine that’s “good for stretching your body,” says Country Club Manager Mary Anne Langone. “A lot of our golfers take the Reformer class because it helps with their flexibility,” she adds. Pool activities include outdoor water classes, volleyball and several outdoor pool parties. There are basketball courts, boxing and billiards rooms, ping-pong and shuffleboard also. In addition, there’s shopping, a movie theater, barbecues, a garden club and many entertainment events. For more Country Club details and to book a tour, call Mary Anne Langone at 718-428-5030 ext. 0.
