We asked our readers to share their hobbies with us via Instagram, and we discovered that western Queens residents’ pastimes ranged from geocaching to playing the piano. Locals collect everything from vinyl to figurines to dolls. One man spends his leisure time on papercraft, assembling an impressive recreation of the Globe Theatre from 100 hand-cut pieces. Too Hot to Stop Summer lives on at The Courtyard

ith cooler fall days ahead, you probably want to soak up the last warm rays with a fruity drink in hand. Now, there’s space specifically curated for enjoying the sunny months in western Queens. With ample and cozy seating, lawn games, string lights and live music, the hangout is perfectly named The Courtyard. The new outdoor pop-up opened its doors this August in the backyard of the historic Paper Factory Hotel, which has been around since 1925, first as the original Pilot Radio Company. Around 1965, a new owner took over and made it into a paper factory, hence the name. Now, it’s a trendy and industrial hideout overlooking the skyline and the majority of LIC and Astoria. The Courtyard is just the first offering at the Paper Factory location by The Collective, a global network of co-living spaces made to host cultural programming and SEPTEMBER 2019 I BOROMAG.COM

FOOD + DRINK bring people together. The Collective has been building co-living spaces across London since 2010, and now, it’s transforming the 125-room Paper Factory into its first U.S. location — right here in Long Island City. It has plans to relaunch the space this month as The Collective Paper Factory, a short-stay co-living space.
The Courtyard, with its modern, getaway vibe, was the perfect way to make use of the outdoor space in the meantime: “We wanted to take advantage of the summer months and activate a space for locals and visitors while the rest of our space is still in transition,” said Reza Merchant, CEO and founder of The Collective.

The Courtyard will be open throughout September and into October, and as it’s an outdoor space, each day is weatherpermitting. No closing date for the pop-up has been announced yet. “We wanted The Courtyard to be a space that balances intrigue with respite — that encourages casual conversation, relaxation and an excellent drink without fuss. We hope we can become a late afternoon and evening stomping grounds at the center of Astoria and Long Island City’s kaleidoscopic cultural offerings,” Merchant said. The Collective has a strong interest in keeping the new hotspot local and giving back to the community in which it thrives. Since its opening on Aug. 1, The Courtyard organized for a food truck by Souvlaki GR, a Greek restaurant on the Lower East Side, to be stationed right in front of the outdoor oasis every Thursday through Sunday. The restaurant and truck are owned by Abby Sierros, Pavlos Sierros and Kostas Plagos — all of whom grew up in Astoria. “Our seasonal pop-up is a celebration of local community, pulling inspiration from some of our favorite outposts across Long Island City. Souvlaki GR, who have brought their food truck to our spot, are Astoria natives. We've been enjoying sharing this

place with our own friends and family. Very quickly it has taken on the vibe of a neighborhood hangout,” Merchant said. Aside from having tasty Greek food like lamb pitas and chicken gyros on the premises, The Courtyard offers a happy hour during the week from 4 to 7 p.m. You can get signature cocktails and wine for just $8, Pacificos for $5 and a bucket of Montauk beer for $25. “Personally, I really like the traditional lamb pita with super flavorful, tender meat served on a fluffy, fresh pita. [The cocktail] PF Spritz is refreshing and perfect for cooling down on hot summer days,” Merchant said. No matter what your liquor or flavor preferences are, you will be sure to find something you can sip on all night. The crowd favorite seems to be the PF Spritz containing strawberry Aperol, Pama pomegranate liqueur and sparkling wine. However, the frosty Frosé practically tastes and looks like summer in a glass. There is also the Summer Negroni, a mix of campari, sweet vermouth and sparkling wine. If the atmosphere, sweet drinks, deals and delicious Greek bites don’t bring you down to The Courtyard, then maybe the weekly music will. Every Saturday starting at 7 p.m., local musicians play on the patio as part of The Courtyard’s Summer Saturdays series. One week they had bass player and ethnomusicologist, Noah Garabedian, make the guests swoon with his jazz tunes. The Courtyard is evidence of how much a space can bring friends and neighbors together in a social setting that doesn’t put on the pressures of a typical indoor bar or venue. The space is open, welcoming and the staff has relaxation and hospitality down to a science. Everything feels lighter and easy at The Courtyard — just like a vacation. “We hope to make The Courtyard a mainstay of our summer program for years to come — though, as with everything we do, it is bound to evolve with the community we build here,” Merchant said.

doors, but YWWC also emphasizes community building, leadership and teamwork while on and off the rocks. “The general theme of this program is building self confidence, which for some of these girls is a real challenge. Not only because either they are immigrants or their family may be, but because of body weight issues, their [home life] is unhealthy, they are dealing with these cultural ideas of what it means to be a woman or a Muslim woman wearing a hijab or just a kid living in New York City dealing with the urban environment,” Krauss said.

O
nce a month, a rock climbing gym in Long Island City hosts a diverse group of high school girls prepping to climb in the great outdoors. They’re there through Young Women Who Crush (YWWC), a climbing and leadership development program for high school aged girls, started two years ago by three rock climbers, Alexis Krauss, Emily Varisco and Eva Kalea. Not only do participants experience the physical, mental and emotional benefits of rock climbing indoors and out-

The program is a collaboration between The Cliffs, the rock climbing facility in Long Island City, and the Discover Outdoors Foundation. The program begins in September and goes through the school year. Each month, there is one two-and-a-half-hour session at The Cliffs during after schools hours. At the end of the school year, the participants have a chance to go on two outdoor, out-of-city trips to rock climb. Last year, the young women were accompanied by their mentors and program leaders to spend the night at an American Alpine Club Campground, where they climbed to “The Gunks,” a world-renowned rock climbing destination. “The Cliffs is perhaps one of the most diverse climbing gyms in probably the U.S.,” Krauss said. “Whether you’re talking about race, gender, it is one of the most inclusive spaces. There is something about these girls who come from different socioeconomic backgrounds and countries to come to this gym and see other women who look

like them opposed to going to a gym that is predominantly white. There are a lot of barriers to entry for climbers as a result of anxieties and fears.� Varisco and Kalea met through working at The Cliffs, where Varisco is a head coach and Kalea was the creative director for about five years. Varisco has been climbing for 20 years and did competitive climbing for 15 years. Kalea has been a climber for 10 years and also started the group and community Lady Cliff Crushers (now Lady+ Crushers) for women and gender non-conforming climbers. Krauss is a six-year climber and found her love for the sport when she was a touring musician on the West Coast, where other musicians took her climbing. She is also a senior guide for Discover Outdoors and a Wilderness First Responder.

up in Queens or New York City, a place that some of them may not see as home. What is even more inescapable is how community members like Krauss, Varisco and Kalea have made a difference and imprint on these girls’ lives by encouraging them to challenge themselves physically and mentally and by taking the time out of their lives to support the passions of young women who want to face their fears by making it to the top of a barrier. “My favorite part [about running YWWC] is a very hard question,” Kalea said. “I really love how dedicated the girls are and how much initiative they have. One of our girls secretly made a video during our outdoor trip where the girls said thank you to us. It was just so sweet and she’s so talented and how she wanted to channel that talent to say thank you was so amazing.”

“My motivation for creating this program is based on an outdoor trip I had taken with girls I had been coaching for a long time, [and] I always wanted to do just an all-girls trip,” Varisco said. “It was an incredible thing that happened when you took the boys out of the equation. The girls could feel comfortable climbing in their sports bras and we were doing fitness competitions every night and doing push-ups together. It was incredible how they all came together, and I just wanted to do something that would help empower them in that way.” According to the three climbers, there are countless ways in which young women benefit from learning the ropes of rock climbing. The girls build self-confidence, face their fears, embrace mindfulness and meditation, build relationships with each other and mentors and hone their communication skills — all extremely important skills when one is holding the rope connected to their fellow climber’s harness as they are scaling a mountain the height of a skyscraper.
“I [signed] up for YWWC because I heard ‘rock climbing’ and my immediate reaction was, ‘Oh, that sounds fun!’” said Marjana Tafader, a past YWWC participant. “[What] interested me more was how during the orientation, the founders of the program were explaining how this will be an environment in which young women of color will be able to get together and have this space where they will explore and thrive. I was eager to join when I heard that we will have mentors who will be guiding us. [I] cannot explain in words how thankful I am to everyone who made this program a reality.” Tafader began her experience with YWWC in November 2017 at the end of her senior year in high school and still remains active with YWWC, but as an alumna mentor. The first time Tafader walked into The Cliffs and touched the rock climbing wall she was shaking. By the end of her first outdoor trip, she made it to the top of a rock and repelled down to safety. When Tafader went on to Lafayette College she noticed a lack of diversity in the campus’s rock climbing gym, and the talented climber is now in the process of starting a student Muslim rock climbing club or something similar. “Overall, [YWWC] has helped me grow into the confident and adventurous young woman I am today,” Tafader said. “I have learned so much from my peers and mentors. I have learned skills such as positive self-talk that I began to use in college when things get tough. I learned some of the climbing jargon and I love how I use it without even thinking like when [I climb] with peers and [tell them], ‘Trust your feet!’” It is apparent the positive impact programs like YWWC have on young women growing

Get ready to sample the latest offerings in tasty food science at a new Long Island City ice cream shop.
I
nternational ice cream company Four Winters opened its first East Coast location at 47-38 Vernon Blvd. Founded in London in 2013, Four Winters has become known for its hand-churned, liquid nitrogen-mixed flavors and sustainable, locally sourced ingredients. The new shop replaces The Standing Room comedy club and Sage Coffee, which both closed in June 2018. Beginning with a liquid base, each flavor is flash-frozen using liquid nitrogen at -196 degrees. Entrepreneurs Omar Alkhawaja and Zeid Zabian, along with Zaynab Abdullah, founded the company six years ago. Abdullah, who is a graduate of the Institute of Culinary Education, is the head of product development and U.S. operations for the company. The Four Winters team gains inspiration for new flavors on seasonal produce, working closely with local farmers, traveling to new cities and pulling elements from their Middle Eastern roots. Since its inception, the company established locations in Jordan, Egypt and, most recently, Los Angeles in 2018. One of Four Winters’ signature flavors includes Knafeh, named for the classic Middle Eastern dessert. A sweet cream base is combined with kataifi dough and simple syrup topped with pistachios. Cereal Crunch combines a vanilla base with sweetened cereal clusters and salted caramel, while Fudge Brownie is made with a chocolate base, fudgy brownies and caramel sauce. storians can finally satisfy their late-night cravings for delicious comfort food with the opening of FoodStruck on 35th Street, the newest addition to the neighborhood brought by two former coworkers turned close friends and now business partners. What started as a

late-night conversation at a bar called Diamond Dogs in Astoria resulted in indulgent delights at their brand-new shop, which officially opened on Aug. 25. Business partners Ravi Thapa, 29, and Eric Bayron, 32, had their soft opening throughout August to introduce their menu to the community and show off the

tasty dishes they have to offer, like their soy garlic glazed chicken thighs and their dirty fries and tots, dripping in cheese sauce, topped with ham, and garnished with rosemary and garlic. With hearty dishes like this, Astorians should stop by soon before they sell out for the night. (Their hours are generally 5 p.m. to 2 a.m., but they might

be open later some days, the owners said.) “Right now [the menu] is comfort food,” Thapa said. “But it’s influenced from all other cuisines. The chopped cheese is a classic from Harlem and the chicken is Korean style, so it's Asian. We did have a spam rice bowl, which is inspired by the Philippines. [Bayron] has a lot of French cuisine techniques as well, so there’s some French too.” Thapa and Bayron are both locals in the Astoria area who have had much of their career in the hospitality industry as a bartender and chef, respectively. They met each other about five years ago when they both worked at Mars, another local spot in the area, and became good friends who would hang out after their shifts ended, which was usually in the late night hours. A go-to spot they would often frequent was Diamond Dogs on 31st Avenue. Since the
bar boasts a bring-your-own food policy, the pair imagined how something like a food truck right outside the bar would be a great idea. After beginning the process to apply for one ran into roadblocks such as a waitlist for applicants, the business partners looked to other options. When they initially inquired about the storefront where FoodStruck is now, they were turned down. A few attempts to acquire other spaces in the area fell through and once again, their current space became available for rent, but this time around they were able to obtain a deal and were handed the keys to the shop to start creating their vision. In the meantime, both Thapa and Bayron are working day jobs at other restaurants and topping their night off by serving hot, delicious food in the evening to hungry Astorians. The long days are certainly challeng-
ing but Thapa feels it’s a key component to pursuing anything that is important. “It's pretty tough,” Thapa said. “But I mean, you have to struggle in the beginning, regardless, in any industry. You have to start at the bottom and work up and you have to put in the hours.” As the neighborhood gets more familiar with what FoodStruck has to offer, there are already a few favorite go-to items on their menu, like the chopped cheese, made with beef, cheese sauce, and caramelized onions on a garlic buttered roll. The result is a hot and tasty sandwich that oozes in melted cheese sauce on warm, toasted bread that is satisfying and filling. The chicken thighs are also popular — and for good reason. The four-piece item is hot, crispy and perfectly drizzled with their in-house soy garlic glaze sauce. It’s certainly filling enough to eat alone or

FOOD + DRINK for hungrier patrons, perfectly paired with fresh tots. Also noteworthy is their grilled cheese sandwich, melted with a triple threat of delicious cheddar, Swiss and mozzarella cheese, with an onion marmalade on multigrain bread. As FoodStruck continues to gain popularity, Thapa and Bayron have many more ideas that they would like to do next, like a pop-up brunch and dinner. Another concept in the works will include adding breakfast to the menu, particularly when they are able to solidify morning hours to do so. The business partners also make it a point to source their items locally when they can in order to support other small businesses. Because the partners have lived and worked in Astoria for many years, there is

already a lot of local support from the area. “We might try to open a location on Ditmars just because we have a lot of friends there,” Thapa said. “Our goal is to have a bar restaurant, [but] that's down the line.” Now that FoodStruck is officially open, it is certainly worth it to stop by for their delicious comfort food and the positive attitudes of the hard-working entrepreneurs. Ultimately, the young men would like to offer some more variety and livelihood for the area with their business. “There's already so much cool stuff in the area,” Thapa said. “We want to offer a different take on certain foods that you don't expect to be able to come into.”

tepping into local artist Alex Markwith’s apartment on 33rd Street feels like entering a very private gallery. “Curated” with intention, the focus is on Markwith’s paintings — ranging from large-scale abstracts with hundreds of brush strokes to 3-D works jutting out from the walls. One walk around the apartment tells me more about its owner than any other space I’ve visited. Originally from a small town near Scranton, Pennsylvania, Markwith knew from a young age that he wanted to be an artist. “When I was very young, it was crayons and colored pencils, and I was always inventing my own characters,” Markwith said.

@ESTIE_PYPER “I got into Rhode Island School of Design and I haven’t looked back since.” Markwith studied painting and English at RISD and moved to New York upon graduation. He landed his first show that summer at a gallery on the Lower East Side. After living and working in Manhattan for three years, he made the move to Astoria with his partner, Meeri Koskialho. “I didn’t even know where Astoria was prior to then. I never thought about living in Queens,” Markwith remembered. “The community is great. I needed a place that was big enough where I could set up a space where I could work.” But Markwith needed to stay in New York for the vibrant arts scene.

“New York was historically, and maybe still is, the center of the art world, globally,” he said. “It has a lot going on for visual arts that started in the ‘60s and ‘70s. There are more galleries here. There are more opportunities, but on the flip side, it’s more difficult as an artist because it’s more expensive and you’re going to have less space.” Markwith describes his work as abstract and “mixed media” — meaning he creates his pieces using layers of found materi-

als such as cardboard, wire, netting, twine, leather and even caution tape. And nothing gives you a better sense of his work than walking down his apartment’s long hallway entrance. Stacked canvases are pushed up against the wall and the ones that couldn’t fit due to their 3-D nature are hung in the narrow space. One of his favorites, “Cloak of Self Expression” (2013), a small canvas wrapped in remnants of a leather jacket, sits right at eye level. It’s been
shown in several cities but Markwith has no intention of selling it. “I don’t start with a preconceived idea of what I’m going to make,” Markwith said. “It’s more a process of trying this and trying that and seeing what works. I start in my own head and I’m responding to the way I compare different elements. It’s almost a process of sculpture even though they’re hanging on the wall.” The main living space is more intentional. The furniture is minimal, modern and neutral — the only color comes from the red and yellow throw pillows on the couch. Markwith and Koskialho purposefully decorated in this way to allow the busy art in the room to take center stage. “Meeri and I both like this concept of minimalism. There was even a question of having these colored pillows here,” Markwith said. “But generally neutral decor is best. With interior design, I think mixing textures is the most important thing — sticking to one color palette, but then mixing textures.” Which is, coincidentally, just like his art — layering and mixing textures with a focus
on black and white (and sometimes red) as the primary colors. Four paintings (which he changes out every couple of months) hang on the primary wall above the glass table and the couch. The one that grabs the most attention is the large black canvas above the couch, constructed using fabric under layers of paint to give it texture. “One of the things I like to be able to do is curate walls,” Markwith said. “I like to be able to exhibit work here. They are intended to stand on their own, but I also like that they sort of form these dialogues between each other.” The other three are smaller. One is primarily white with papery layers, while another black with two holes and fabric stretched around the openings. The third and most elaborate has two canvases stacked with a hanging rag in front and wire jutting out. “One of the biggest limitations in painting is that you always have a rectangle,” Markwith said. “Breaking up the rectangle gives it its own character. With each work, I want it to have its own character. I want to make something you haven’t seen before.” SEPTEMBER 2019 I BOROMAG.COM

The bedroom has a similar layout: a simple white low-set bed with side tables and two large canvases on opposite sides of the space. One is filled with straight black-and-white brush strokes, and the other is more chaotic, with specks of neon paint peeping through the white and black paint smear, topped off with twine stuck on top. You could look at it for hours. “I want to make something that surprises me,” the artist said. “The most difficult part is recognizing when the work is finished, because the nature is such that one could continue just on one canvas but that would not very fulfilling to me. I need to see a result at some point.” The kitchen also serves as a display room. One wall features a large canvas with more leather jacket pieces. The opposite wall is covered in smaller abstract works covered in found materials. The kitchen used to double as his physical studio before he got a space of his own. Now, his studio is only a short walk away. His studio is a behind-the-scenes view into Markwith’s creative process. The modest space is an art teacher’s dream: the shelves are stocked with supplies and boxes are bursting with materials in every corner. “I get ideas from the materials, so the materials are directly related to what’s produced,” he said. “It’s a studio practice. It’s something like with yoga — you commit to doing it and you have to spend time in the studio. The work’s always developing.” You can catch some Markwith originals today, right around the corner in Long Island City at Plaxall Gallery from Sept. 8 to Oct. 12. Two new pieces of his, “Orange Void” and “Quadruple Void,” will be shown.
