s I walked down the streets of Astoria on a breezy, sunny day, I was impressed by the way western Queens residents were pulling together classic pieces to create polished, stylish looks. A lot of denim caught my attention, including a ‘90s-inspired denim-on-denim look, in addition to black pieces that will never go out of style: a sleek tank, a shoulder cut-out top and a blazer. Astorians made these staples stand out with plaids and other prints, funky but trendy shoes and shades, of course. As always, western Queens fashion didn’t disappoint. Keep bringing that swag to the streets! Astorian Daniela (@danielaaleina) works at a beauty salon and was on her way to have lunch with a friend when I spotted her. She describes her style as “girly glam,” and I totally agree. She paired her leggings and top with cute sneakers and a silvery backpack but glammed it up with her makeup and beautiful long hair.
Eleina (@crazycuurrllyy) is an entertainment publicist visiting her boyfriend who lives in Astoria. They were on their way home to cook tacos. She said her style is “comfy city chic.” I loved her relaxed print pants, top and sandals. It came together in an effortless and comfortable way. Spencer (@s_grim), a math tutor and Astoria resident, was on his way home from work and about to grab takeout. He said he is “always overdressed” and likes to be “dressy.” His relaxed, rolled-up jeans with a basic white V-neck tee, blazer and dress shoes checked off all the style boxes.

Tatiana (@tatimoribe), a fashion designer visiting Astoria, considers her style to be “basic.” Her sleek, no-frills look with cut-off jeans, booties and a sleeveless black top included a lot of classic pieces, but the way she combined them gave her outfit a touch of edge.
Jessie (@jessiegreenbody), an Astorian actress and personal coach, was out and about picking up a bottle of wine. I noticed her plaid tied top, denim and super funky cutout wedge shoes from across the street and had to stop her. She said her outfits are usually “bohemian rocker.” Nailed it!

Even the bathroom at DollFace was cute, with framed photos of comedians like Lucille Ball and Kristen Wiig lining the wall. I know that’s a weird place to begin, but it just goes to show how well owner Stacey Vasilopoulos has curated the business. DollFace is a luxury lash and brow boutique, and along with lash extensions, they also offer services like microblading, brow tinting (which they call brow prints), and facials.

nd the decor certainly exuded a feminine vibe. In the salon lobby, for example, a neon sign exclaimed “Babe Cave.” An elaborate gold chain chandelier hung overhead, which Vasilopoulos explained was the first thing she

bought for the space. There was a plush, black couch with lipstick print pillows, and nearly everything was in a shade of black, red, white or gold. Vasilopoulos is a born-and-raised Astorian. She opened DollFace about a year ago, and while she has a few people

working there with her, it’s Vasilopoulos at the helm. The ultimate message of DollFace seems to be that every woman is beautiful: “We leave no lash unturned and no stray hair untweezed on the glamorous road of emphasizing your dollface features!” their about page reads. I was there to get lash extensions (which their website calls Volume Lashes) and a brow tint. I had never done either before, and felt self-conscious about my unkempt eyebrows. However, Vasilopoulos was incredibly kind and patient, answering all of my numerous questions as to what the process would involve. The whole procedure (lash extensions and brow tint) took a little less than two and a half hours. She used synthetic "Volume Lashes" that fan out into several lashes, providing maximum coverage — unlike classic lashes, which consist of just one strand. I was propped up comfortably in a zero-gravity chair, and a medical-like light hovered overhead to give Vasilopoulos a clear view of what she was working with. She said that most people fall asleep during the eyelash extension process because it’s so relaxing, and it was. The chair I sat in was made for masseuses, and she asked if I wanted her turn on the foot massagers that were built into it. I did. Although I didn’t nod off, I was incredibly comfortable, listening to what Vasilopoulos later explained was the Mandy Moore station on Spotify. She typically listens to Coldplay, but she’d been hankering for something from the ’90s or early-aughts the other day and had switched it over. All in all, the lash extension process took a little over two hours, most of which

consisted of Vasilopoulos meticulously gluing the dark, synthetic lashes to the base of my natural ones. As for my own eyelashes, they’re blonde and hard to see. I typically use mascara, which Vasilopoulos had me remove with a wipe before we started. I asked if she counted as she went, but she laughed and said she just stopped when she got to the end of the eyelid. After my lashes were complete, I kept my eyes closed as she worked on my brows. I filled out a form before we started that asked me various health- and skincare-related questions. For that reason, Vasilopoulos wasn’t able to wax my eyebrows, because I used harsh, several dermatologist-prescribed creams. So she went to work on my eyebrows with a pair of tweezers, and my right leg twitched reflexively as she plucked, like a nerve was connecting my knee to the skin above my eye. We kept apologizing to each other: me for my reaction and her for having caused the reaction. Vasilopoulos was even kind enough to take before-and-after photos for me. I have pretty translucent eyebrows, and I typically dye them myself. But they were striking once Vasilopoulos was done. I marveled at the elegant shape she’d managed to wrangle out of my typically uncooperative brows, which were now tinted a dark brown. As for my eyelashes, the lash extensions eliminated the need for mascara. What were once vague sprouts of hair were now visible, perfectly curled eyelashes. The name DollFace is certainly accurate — I felt like a sexy Bratz doll, but in the best way possible. Before I left, Vasilopoulos also gave me a lash after-care kit, which included several lash brushes (basically dry mascara brushes), a foaming lash wash and a card with instructions on it. I was terrified to touch my eyes and mess up all of her hard work, and later that night I found myself rubbing my eyes instinctively. That is a nono, along with using mascara or any oilbased product on your eyes. Several days later, however, I’m happy to report that my eye game is still strong, and it’s wonderful not having to worry about applying mascara every morning and removing it every night. Lash extensions will set you back $195 for a new set at DollFace, but it may be worth it if full coverage is what you’re looking for. Vasilopoulos even mentioned that some pregnant women get exten-

You can find a full list of services and prices on their website. At the end of the day, it was just nice to go get pampered for a while — and to chat with Vasilopoulos while we listened to Mandy Moore sing “Only Hope” from “A Walk to Remember.”

on popular Food Network show ‘Chopped’

An Astoria chef at a popular Greek restaurant emerged victorious on a recent episode of Food Network’s “Chopped.” Nicholas Poulmentis, the executive chef and co-owner of Akrotiri Seafood Taverna, located at 29-20 30th Ave., was one of the four contestants on the episode, which aired at 9 p.m. on July 3. The chef’s appetizer, entree and dessert carried him through each round of the competition to ultimately win the $10,000 prize. On the episode, Poulmentis told the judges, Marc Murphy, Alex Guarnaschelli and Martha Stewart, that if he won, he would use the prize money to travel to Greece with his family.

When we spoke to Poulmentis before the show aired, he said that he was “super excited” for the show to be aired, and relieved that the wait was finally over. The chef said that it was hard to keep his participation in the show a secret from his family and friends.
According to Poulmentis, once chosen to appear on “Chopped,” the production team does not allow contestants to talk about their participation during the filming process. “My daughter lost her mind,” said the chef after he told his family he was going to be

comes from an ancient Greek city on Santorini that was buried in volcanic ash. The restaurant’s menu features “inventive riffs on classic Greek fare” including Htapodokeftedes, which are breadless octopus croquettes with parsley sauce and seared scallops with squid ink linguine pasta in a white saffron emulsion known as Htenia. They also offer natural wines from using indigenous grapes from various Greek regions. Poulmentis mentioned that the entree that he made on the show will also be

on the show. “I was super happy because it’s all about her and the kids.” The husband and father of two came to Astoria from the island of Kythira in Greece six years ago, after his country was undergoing economic hardships. Growing up, the chef worked in restaurants and received his culinary education in Anavysos culinary school in Greece and Le Cordin Bleu in Paris. To date, the chef and Michelin Star winner has had over 25 years of experience in the industry, including his nearly four months at Akrotiri. One reason the chef gave for wanting to participate in “Chopped” was to push his limits and see what he could produce with ingredients given to him on the spot. “It’s a difficult show, and I understood how difficult it is, but I felt I needed to see my power,” he said. The chef said also wanted to test his English skills, in addition to testing his culinary prowess. Poulmentis recalls being afraid he would not be accepted because “everyone was speaking fluent English” on the show’s set. or New Yorkers who haven’t ventured into Astoria in years (or at all), the word brings to mind one association: Greece. It makes sense, of course — one third of all Greek people who moved to New York City in the 1980s made the neighborhood their home, and by the mid-90s, only slightly less than half its population was Greek. But for those who live here now, the area is a haven for an entire international community — with so many amazing different cultures rep-

resented, sometimes just going out the front door feels like a trip abroad. In fact, Queens in general has more languages spoken than anywhere in the world — just between Astoria and Forest Hills you can hear Greek, Filipino, Urdu, Indonesian, Russian, Japanese and Lithuanian, among many others, and even more rare dialects like Chavacano, Waray-Waray, Minangkabau and Bukharian. And, where there are so many languages and cultures present, you know there is delicious food awaiting. Next time you have
MIDDLE EAST PALESTINE & MORE
KING OF FALAFEL & SHAWARMA (KOF), 30-15 BROADWAY KOF has been a part of the neighborhood for a while — since 2002 to be exact — but as a street cart, where it was voted the No. 1 street vendor in NYC. Luckily, it just made 31st Street and Broadway its first brick-and-mortar home two and a half years ago. The expanded menu serves the same mission as the original: to “replicate the taste of home” and share traditional and “new interpretations of Palestinian and Middle Eastern cuisine.” If you haven’t had a falafel platter or sandwich, you must give it a try — or, to change it up a bit, order the Za'atar (“pizza” with Middle Eastern spice mixture) or Kefta (Moroccan minced meat).

FOMO from all of your friends who are flying off to exotic locations this summer, try taking a quick trip around the world within our own borough! After you visit a few of these restaurants, you’ll be feeling like a jetsetter (minus the jet lag) in no time — and they’re all between Broadway and 31st Avenue. We’ll start off our journey in the Middle East, then head to Central America, South America, Asia and Europe. You won’t even need a passport, just an open mind — and a hearty appetite!
CENTRAL/SOUTH AMERICA BRAZIL
PAO DE QUEIJO, 31-90 30TH ST. Pao de Queijo is one of the most well-known Brazilian dishes, and there’s no denying this restaurant does its namesake food well. Start off with these baked cheese balls, or coxinhas (chicken croquettes) when they are available (look to the sign on the door). Follow it up with a one-of-a-kind burger, done Brazilian style with a range of toppings. The X Calabresa is topped with with more than just lettuce and tomato, boasting cheese, corn, potato sticks and mayonnaise, while the X Goiana is loaded with cheese, ham and pineapple, along with corn, potato sticks, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise. Finish your meal off with Brigadeirao, a homemade chocolate flan.
MEXICO
EL MARIACHI, 33-11 BROADWAY If you’re looking for Tex-Mex, you’ve come to the wrong place! At El Mariachi, which opened in 2000, serving the most authentic Mexican cuisine with the freshest ingredients (which you can truly taste) is of the utmost importance. You’ll find the usual eats — burritos, quesadillas, and enchiladas, but you’ll also find a variety of tortas, tostados and meat platters (like mole de pollo and pierna adobada) with rice and beans. Upgrade your taco game with more authentic offerings like lengua (beef tongue), nopales (cactus), or chorizo.

JAPAN
TAMASHII RAMEN, 29-05 BROADWAY Tamashii was one of the first restaurants to bring Japanese ramen to Astoria, joining the neighborhood in 2013. It follows the traditional three components of Japanese ramen: stock, noodle and “kaeshi,” a Japanese flavor base often used in noodle soups. Try the popular miso ramen, shio ramen (made with mineral salt), or shoyu ramen (with soy sauce). Despite its name, it isn’t all just ramen here. If you’re starting off with something light (which maybe you should; we have a long way to go!), try the pork bao buns or the takowasa — a broiled octopus appetizer.
JAPAN
FAMILY MARKET, 29-15 BROADWAY Though not a restaurant, Family Market on Broadway is the perfect replica of a Japanese convenience store right in Astoria. Offering a large selection of the alltoo-popular Pocky, Family Market is a great

place to pick up fun packs of Japanese candy like speciality KitKat Bars (in flavors like green tea!) and gummy candies — which in Japan have an intense fruity flavor, are individually wrapped, and offer unique flavors like lychee and yuzu (try the brand Kasugai). There are also plenty of authentic specialty food items, like Kasugai (Bonito flakes) — traditionally served on top of
Japanese savory pancakes — panko breadcrumbs, matcha tea, ramen noodles, miso paste and Asian beauty products. There is also even a small refrigerated section with traditional Japanese takeaway items like onigiri (a Japanese “sandwich” with rice and seaweed), mochi and dango — a Japanese dumpling similar to mochi but served on a stick.
THAILAND
PYE BOAT NOODLE, 35-13 BROADWAY Pye Boat Noodle is known for — you guessed it — traditional Thai noodle soups, an uncommon find at restaurants in the U.S. Go for any of the Boat Noodle Soups with meat or seafood of your choice, or, if a smaller bite is more up your alley, they also serve up authentic Thai “hawker” (street vendor) food. Test out the Luak Jim (fish/shrimp balls) or the Kai Nok Krata Tode (quail eggs in fried dough) while sitting outside near their lovely koi pond on the back patio. When you receive your food, the waiters will also bring out a variety of condiments so you can tailor the flavors of the meal to your liking (including chili flakes, sugar, pickled peppers, fish sauce, etc.), as traditional in Thailand.
SOUTH KOREA
MOKJA, 35-19 BROADWAY Mokja has a best-of-both-worlds menu: they do American takes on Korean flavors — like with their kimchi fries, bulgogi nachos and the bibimbap burger — but also offer all of the Korean street food classics. For a truly authentic visit, try bibimbap or dolsot (hot stone) bibimbap, japchae (clear sweet potato noodles), Korean style curry, or something from their large selection of traditional Korean soups and stews. After you order, you’ll be greeted with the traditional “banchan,” a group of small side dishes that are given before a meal, usually including kimchi, one or two pickled items, and/or some side vegetables for the table to snack on before the meal.

Of course with Astoria’s history we had to include some Greek food! One of the original Greek restaurants in the area, Zenon Taverna is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Known for its Sheftalia (Cypriot sausages), Halloumi (Greek cheese with goat’s milk), octopus and
calamari, you can try a classic or keep track of the homemade, limited quantity meals served only on specific days of the week. Their version of avgolemono — a traditional Greek soup with egg, lemon and chicken — is delicious, and perfect for if you’re feeling a little under the weather.

VITE VINOSTERIA, 31-05 34TH ST Brush up on your Italian pronunciations for a trip to rustic restaurant and wine bar Vite Vinosteria. Take the classic mozzarella cheese staple to the next level with their Burrata E Pachino, imported creamy buffalo milk mozzarella from Puglia with cherry tomatoes and basil. It wouldn’t feel like a voyage to the Mediterranean without homemade pasta, so order what you would really find in Italy with the Pappardelle alla Bolognese or Linguine alle Vongole (with baby clams). Lisa La Porta has lived in Astoria for her entire life. La Porta is now raising her family here — two sons, ages 18 and 10. When one of her boys continuously suffered from skin flare-ups related to his eczema, La Porta found that there were “so many chemicals in everything” that was meant to treat his condition. A lover of natural remedies and a vegan herself, La Porta knew that "there needs to be an affordable, suffering-free product” to help deal with this. “It can be done,” she believed, and began manifesting a solution. Whereas prescription medications helped La Porta get her son’s condition under control, she also needed some simple skincare to keep the inflammation at bay. Calling on coconut oil and shea butter, La Porta created her own concoction, putting love and positive intentions in with every stir. Her son’s skin responded well. La Porta found that she was able to fill a need, and she wanted to share the blessing with others.

La Porta first stirred up body butters and lip balms, passing them out to friends and family as a test run. “If you think it stinks,” she’d ask them, “tell me. Don’t be shy.” With positive feedback in abundance, La Porta trademarked her name, created a website, and began taking her products to craft fairs. But where does the “magic” come in? The company’s name is a pretty literal one, as La Porta works tirelessly to inject positive vibes and intentions into everything she formulates. Her kitchen is a safe, vibrating space, rife with chants and mantras. “What you put into the universe, you get back,” she preaches. Not only does her product help others, but it does so practically and mindfully, without any suffering to other living things — distinguishing her stuff from the chemicalheavy, negativity-laden commercial products that are so commonly available. The public has embraced her positive, natural approach. In Astoria specifically, “a lot of people are happy to support small businesses,” she observed. “It’s so appreciated that people trust me with their skin.” Her “approachable, practical, reasonably priced [wares]” are so loved by those who use them. In addition to the initial body butters and lip balms, La Porta has created a natural deodorant in three fascinating scents (like patchouli J U LY 2 0 1 8
orange and rosemary mint) which have sold out at various markets. Up next? A soothing salt scrub, coming later this summer. Though she’s excited to get her products out to more people, La Porta is grateful for the growth she’s had up until this point. “A lot has happened in a year’s time,” she noted, but “doing things right and taking my time is the only way to do it.” She hopes to have her products in some local shops soon. ichael Weisner and Annie Nelson have New York blood. Nelson grew up on Long Island and while Weisner is from Minnesota, his family has deep roots in New York. The couple met during their freshman year at New York University eight years ago and have been together ever since. They now both work in Manhattan — Weisner is a research systems engi-

@ESTIE_PYPER neer at Columbia University and Nelson works in undergraduate admissions back at NYU. “When we were thinking of places to live after graduating, this made sense as the first place to look,” Nelson said about the borough. “My family actually started in Astoria, and I still have family in Astoria on both sides. And this was actually the first apartment that we looked at.”

Now, Nelson’s cousin lives down the street and her aunt is a few blocks away. And Weisner’s family also came from Astoria originally, going back centuries. “It almost feels like we’re coming back to our roots,” Nelson noted. And that seems to be a theme that echoes through their apartment: an homage to where they came from, but also a nod to where they want to go. Their home is decorated in a way that is uniquely them — unlike anything you would find in an Ikea catalogue. They’ve managed to weave together the most important things in their lives and make it work in a cohesive way. “Decorating was pretty collaborative,” Nelson recalled, “and when our landlord said we could paint, I was very excited about that. Paint really makes me feel like I’m at home.” One wall of their spacious living room is painted red with orange-y tones. It brightens up the space and exudes a warm feeling throughout the room. Their kitchen is NYU vio-

let, and their bedroom is a calming light blue. “We just wanted it to be very warm and colorful,” Nelson said. “We're not people that are very good with being understated. We’re very bold in our color choices, which is why we have blue and purple and red — it just makes us feel at home.” The red in the living room is complemented perfectly with gold accents throughout the space. A gold mirror that resembles the sun hangs on the far end of the room above a wooden dining table set with goldcolored plates. As their main entertaining space, this room is where most of the couple’s “collections” live. They’re big collectors and display their work with pride. Two tall black shelves frame the TV in the center of the space, holding stacks of board games — one of their favorite pastimes. “We’re in a really interesting time where there’s so many interesting board games coming out, so we’ve gone a little crazy with our collection,” Weisner said. Trinkets from their travels abroad are nestled in shelving space around the room as well, from Russia to China, and places friends have been. They also have pieces from countries they aspire to go to — with many items from Africa. In the kitchen, their love of travel is even more apparent. The fridge is covered with an extensive magnet collection spanning the globe, holding up travel

photos and wedding save-the-dates. On the opposite wall hangs their impressive Starbucks mug collection — one from each city they’ve been. The kitchen also flaunts the couple’s crafty side. When they first moved in, there were exposed and mismatched lightbulbs in the kitchen and hallway. To make them uniform, Nelson and Weisner covered the bulbs with wooden quilting hoops and

This is how we’ve had it the whole time and it’s really worked for us.” One more collection is most apparent in this room… “There are some subtle and not-so-subtle Mickey Mouses around the apartment,” Nelson said. “We’re both really into Disney. We actually went on our bachelor and bachelorette trips to Disney World.” Surrounded by memories of the places they’ve been and aspirations for their next adventure, Nelson and Weisner have no plans to leave their beloved Astoria. “I don’t think we would ever move from Astoria honestly,” Nelson said. “Just feeling like you’re part of a community in a really large city is very important to us.” “I think we’re finally to the point where we’re really happy with everything,” Weisner said. “We’ve felt more at home here than any other borough.”

And to add more counter space, they’ve fastened a piece of wood to one wall as a makeshift breakfast bar. “We try to find some more creative solutions, being in an older space,” Nelson said, “but we love it and it very much feels like home now.” The hallway pays homage to all the places they’ve lived, with posters of Minnesota and New York, along with Berlin and Florence, where they each studied abroad. Family photos also line the entryway, reminding them of home. “We really try to update the pictures,” Weisner said. “We try bring a lot of that history in here. Make it warm,” Nelson added. At the end of the hallway hangs a small chalkboard wedding countdown. Nelson and Weisner got married in June in Manhattan, but at the time of the interview, the sign proudly read, “14 days until we say ‘I do.’” Their bedroom is classic and cozy. The walls are a serene shade of blue, and two large black-and-white photos of Wash-

WINE AND SWEETS FEST G
et ready for a weekend filled with unlimited wine and sweets in Long Island City. The Wine and Sweets Fest returns to LIC Flea and Food for a second year. This year’s festival takes place the weekend of Aug. 4-5 at the waterfront market located at 5-25 46th Ave. Guests will get the opportunity to taste unlimited samples of wine curated by a New York City wine professional as well as taste a unique array of sweets from the over 20 local sweet vendors that are slated to be at the event. Niko Triantafillou is this year’s tastemaker for the event, a role which involves choosing the businesses and vendors who will get to showcase their food to attendees. He was also one of about 15 tastemakers for The World’s Fare back in April. Triantafillou said he is currently in the process of reaching out to the businesses who might be in attendance and shared that being the event’s tastemaker is “harder than it sounds.” He said that the process involves choosing vendors who are the best fit based on their location and experience, while ensuring that there is not more than one vendor per category. Though the food writer said that the list of vendors has not been confirmed, he promises that there will be a wide variety of wine and sweets to suit all tastes. Triantafillou added that this event is a great opportunity for attendees to try sweets they have not yet tried, and also an opportunity for the small businesses that he chooses to showcase their offerings.

The Workout Factory in Long Island City will see many changes in programming, equipment and trainers in the coming months, kicking off with its big anniversary party on Aug. 4, 2017.

Since it opened, Workout Factory has received support from the Long Island City community. Now, the studio aims to increase membership, encourage diversity and build a friendly environment that extends beyond the walls of the average gym, according to studio and marketing manager Joia Aliperti. “The biggest change is the look and feel of the entire place,” she said. By the end of summer, the Workout Factory will be adding new classes. Specifically, customers can now enjoy a 25-minute hybrid class infused with pop music and an inclusive spin club. “Our members’ favorite class is a hybrid class which is 25 minutes of cycling mixed with arms.
It is a full body workout with lots of pop music such as Lady Gaga and Michael Jackson,” Alperti said. In addition to the new Spincore, trainer Alex R. has two new classes Thursday nights: Hustle at 6:15 p.m. and Muscle at 7:30 p.m. “These two classes provide members with everything they would want from a cardio- and strengthbased class,” Alperti said. The Workout Factory will also be hiring additional “top-notch” trainers. “We have trainers who have awesome personalities that are here to help members achieve their goals,” Aliperti said. Aliperti was a member before she became manager. “As a prior member, managing everything now [gives me] a very unique perspective. I know the community and I also know what the members want.” Additionally, state-of-the-art equipment such as kettlebells and dip bars will be added to the studio in order to enhance the customer experience. Alperti said that Workout Factory also hopes to add “luxury” jump ropes. The launch of the Workout Factory’s transformation will begin with the big anniversary party Aug. 4, where family and friends are invited to gather in the new space.
