CONTENTS One of my favorite things about Astoria is that when the weather is nice, our sidewalks are filled with people enjoying a relaxing brunch with friends or sipping cocktails late into the evening. It gives our neighborhood so much energy — plus, it feels very European, non? This is our outdoor dining issue, so if you’re overwhelmed by all of the great al fresco options in western Queens, here’s where to start. We have a roundup of 15 restaurants with great outdoor spaces (page 18). Katch is introducing its outdoor speakeasy this month (page 22), and Estate Garden Grill, a beer garden and restaurant, just opened in Long KATRINA MEDOFF Island City (page 48). Sugar Freak reopened editor-in-chief at a new location, with plenty of outdoor seating (page 30). Plus, Las Catrinas, a new Mexican restaurant on Broadway, just came to the neighborhood in May — and its outdoor seating is coming this summer (page 50). uly is a time when we can be assured that summer is finally here. However, a New York summer can be a harsh mistress, oscillating between blissfully warm and murderously humid. Stormy one minute and picture perfect the next. On the streets of Astoria this month, we saw fashion that reflected the ever-changing weather and mood of the city, from casual shorts and a tee, to full on mermaid-chic! Take a look at the style mavens out in force this month.
Karina was out shopping with friends in this oversized gingham shirt worn with jeans. She works in health care but has a “passion for fashion.”
Mermaids are always in style.
Zoe, a manager at H&M, let her tattoos take center stage by wearing casual shorts and a white T-shirt. A perfect summer look. Ina originally hails from Romania and reminded me of Carrie Bradshaw in the opening credits to “Sex and the City� in her tutu skirt. Love the soft pink paired with black for a touch of edge.
Milica was visiting Astoria from Serbia. She looked effortlessly cool in this striped dress, worn nonchalantly with white sneakers. I dream of being this cool!

ow that we’re in the heat of summer (literally), it’s time to take advantage of all your favorite neighborhood spots that have finally unveiled their outdoor spaces after a long, cold winter. Many have quaint front patios perfect for people-watching and enjoying the sunshine with your Instagram-worthy craft cocktail in hand. Others boast fully furnished back patios, shaded for your skin’s sake during the day, but lit up romantically at night — perfect for that sultry summer evening date. A few are situated right on the water, offering stellar views of the Manhattan skyline. Whatever your speed, there’s something for everyone right in your own neighborhood.

Katch Gastropub and Eatery in Astoria is opening its outdoor speakeasy on Thursday, July 13, at 8 p.m. It will be the perfect place to go back in time — without having to use a time machine — every Thursday night while the weather’s nice. This 1920s-themed bar will make you feel like you’re sneaking some booze during Prohibition. The speakeasy will be in Katch’s courtyard, an outdoor space with a view of the stars and a covered area to protect you from potential rainstorms. According to Katch’s new owner, Bill McSorley, visitors to the bar will “go through the inside [of Katch], and there will be curtains to hide it like a speakeasy.” The drapes will be closed at all times and there will be a doorman. McSorley even wants to set up a code word to get into the speakeasy to enhance the experience. Once inside, visitors will be greeted by a mix of live music and a playlist with music from the 1920s and ‘30s.

He wanted to open the speakeasy to provide something different for the community. “Brooklyn and Manhattan have them, and we wanted to bring something new to Astoria,” McSorley said. He thinks the new outdoor space will bring more people to Astoria, and make going out to a speakeasy-themed spot more convenient for Queens residents. The themed bar will have drinks and food that will go with the times. The gastropub already has more than 40 beers on tap – they serve many specialty beers including Lagunista: Born Again Yesterday, Victory: Golden Monkey, Montauk Watermelon and Allogash White to name a few. But for the speakeasy, McSorley also wants to “change it up and have more authentic drinks to the ‘20s and ‘30s.” They will serve themed cocktails, such as old-fashioned dry martinis, gin and tonics and Canadian whiskeys. Katch is also working on a menu to go with the food fads of the time period.

The outdoor speakeasy will have seven televisions to show themed movies. McSorley plans on “sticking to movies from that time, not just set in that time period.” (He won’t be a stickler to the time period all the time, though; he said he wants to show “The Untouchables,” even though it’s from the 1980s.) All of the movies will be black and white to go with the black and white decorations. Katch will be decorated with black and white table covers. The servers will be wearing black and white, too. McSorley wants everyone to have the full experience, to make the courtyard feel like “a throwback to that time of the world when alcohol was prohibited,” when people had to “make an effort to get into a place to drink.” McSorley hopes that the speakeasy will become the neighborhood’s Thursday night spot. He wants people to have fun and enjoy the outdoor space: “We’re inside half the year anyway,” he said. And he’s confident that Katch has transformed this little corner of Astoria so well that visitors will be taken back in time to the Prohibition. “No one will be disappointed,” he promised.

The beloved New Orleans-inspired Sugar Freak officially reopened in Astoria on June 26. The restaurant, previously located at 36-18 30th Ave., closed in February when owner Michele Addeo and restaurateur James Paloumbis announced it would re-

open at 37-11 30th Ave. The new space previously housed the restaurant MexiBBQ. Now, Sugar Freak is open at the bigger space and retains the “authentic, homegrown feel,” including the vintage plates on the walls and the tin ceiling. “Everything is upcycled, recycled and repurposed,” a spokesperson for the restaurant said. In addition to its old menu, the restaurant now offers new seafood boils, waffle tacos and Beignet Eggs Benedict. Freshly baked
cakes and pies were added to the dessert menu along with the deep-fried banana pudding and traditional dump cake. To make the ordering process smoother, customers will now order their meals at the counter before taking a seat. Sugar Freak also offers delivery service, catering and lunch service. ne Astoria movie theater will allow movie lovers a ride on the Summer Movie Express as they sell $1 movie tickets to children’s movies from July to August. UA Kaufman Astoria Stadium 14, located at 35-30 38th St., will screen 18 movies for $1 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays with a portion of proceeds going to the Will Rogers Institute. The organization funds medical research of cardiopulmonary diseases and purchases neonatal ventilator equipment for medical facilities across the country. The Summer Movie Express Initiative began on July 4 and will end on Aug. 29 and Aug. 30 with screenings of “Storks” and “The Lego Batman Movie.” All movies will start at 10 a.m.

Every few months, we’ve been introducing you to some western Queens bands and musicians that we think you should be adding to your playlists. Here are four more groups in the local music scene you should be looking out for— we think their sounds are great for listening to in your headphones as you walk around the sunny sidewalks of Queens, and fun to watch live when they perform in their home neighborhoods!
Hollis Brown With the lofty goal of keeping the spirit and sound of great American music alive, Mike Montali and Jon Bonilla of Hollis Brown created a modern American rock band based in Astoria. Montali (vocals and guitar) has been involved in the Astoria music scene since he was a kid.

“I grew up in Astoria, so I have been playing with friends here since I first started playing music,” Montali explained. Montali and Bonilla (lead guitarist) of Hollis Brown met in high school and have been playing together ever since. “By 2009 we started touring and recording demos trying to figure out

a sound we felt best represented us as people and musicians,” Bonilla said. “Adam Bock joined us on piano and backing vocals by 2013. Shortly after, Andrew Zehnal found his place as our drummer, followed by Brian Courage from Long Island on bass, rounding out our lineup.” Their straightforward sound is reminiscent of a road movie soundtrack that spans across landscapes of Middle America. Hollis Brown’s energetic tunes get you moving — even if you are standing still — as soon as you hear them. Despite their originality, their music is reminiscent of the classics like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and The Allman Brothers. “Astoria has such a diverse musical background,” Bonilla said. “It has every race and ethnicity all in one neighborhood. There are so many different cultures from around the world that influence us as people and musicians.” Despite the success and growth of the Astoria music scene, Montali still thinks there is something missing. “It's strange because we grew up in Queens, and we live here, but I honestly think Astoria needs a real proper music venue,” Montali said. “It's missing that.” The band assures us that they are “always” playing: “We have a West Coast run coming up in July,” Montali said. “We are always popping up in New York City though."

Dirty Wings Guitarist and singer Sam Rasiotis of the Astoriabased band Dirty Wings describes their sound as “rabble-rousing rock ‘n’ roll—indie rock, old-time country, punk, noise.” The band first formed in 2007 through open mics at The Quays, and 10 years later, they are still an active part of the Astoria music scene. Their influences include Bruce Springsteen, Wilco, Pixies, Sonic Youth—“and all our neighborhood bands here in Queens,” Rasiotis added. Dirty Wings’ four-piece lineup is Sam Rasiotis (vocals, guitars), Joe Pepe (lead guitar), Sean Wiggins (bass, vocals) and

John Coakley (drums). When discussing the Astoria music scene, Rasiotis explained, “Everyone has their own sound. Astoria thrives on sincerity, not irony.” Dirty Wings’ first show was at the nowdefunct Hellgate Social with the legendary neighborhood band Bliminal. Since then, they have generated quite the following and developed a reputation for being a solid innovator in the Astoria music scene, which Rasitois describes as “an amazing family of misfits, poets and rockers.” Since the band has deep roots in this local music scene, Rasiotis would love for
western Queens to become more of a destination for music. “Ten years ago, Justin Finley [of the band Bliminal and Space Jump Live] and I talked about making the neighborhood a place where lots of music and shows would happen, rather than constantly trying to play in Manhattan or Brooklyn,” Rasiotis said. Dirty Wings’ favorite neighborhood haunts are The Quays, Shillelagh and Irish Whiskey Bar, and as you probably could have guessed, their shows create a heartfelt strong sense of community and excitement that brings the house down. Dirty Wings will be headlining the Anniversary/Closing Ceremony Party of the Between Two Bridges Music Festival on Aug. 29 at The Quays Pub.

Billy Conohan With his feet firmly planted in the ground and a strong backing band, Billy Conohan creates a unique brand of roots music. He defies the usual genre categorization with an amalgamation of folk, blues, rock and hip-hop. “I love all types of music, so if it speaks to me, I'm connected,” Conohan said. “I can't disregard any genre for another.” Conohan fronts the band that got together in a very “New York” way, by attending local open mics. “Everyone I play with, I've met at a show or open mic and asked them to jam,” he said. “It's very much a revolving door of amazing musicians. The current lineup is Pete O'Neill on bass, Ryan Shapiro on keys, Jon Wert on drums. I met Pete around 2009, I'd like to say. Ryan around the same time, and Jon was the most recent addition. But there is also Ray Rubio, Berk O, Nicole Gough, Amos Ang, Amos Rose. It goes on,” explained Conohan.
Together, they create a diverse, dynamic lineup and killer live sets. Another native Astorian, Conohan has had an unusual backstory, getting his start as a stand-up comedian at 13, frequenting local haunts like the now-defunct Waltz-Astoria. “I attended almost every weekly open mic to try new things, especially when I
dove into music,” Conohan said. “The people I met there are still in my life, still my family, and the most supportive group ever, many of whom are artists of amazing talent themselves.” Watching Conohan's set feels like watching a musical prodigy with a strong hold on the spectrum of music. They play Flattopps, LIC Beer Project, LIC Bar, The Quays, and Rest-au-Rant (RAR BAR) to name a few, but you can catch them on Aug. 6 at the LIC BAR, at 4 p.m.

The Greenstreets The Greenstreets’ straightforward sound can be described as a “three-piece power pop garage band type with indie rock sensibilities,” singer and lead guitar player John Keegan said. “We kind of mix ‘90s alternative with modern indie rock.” Their influences span the decades, from ‘50s pop to ‘60s rock, ‘70s glam and punk,
the ‘80s and ‘90s as well as the music of the modern age. “If I like it and it moves me, it becomes an influence,” Keegan explained. John Keegan began playing guitar in the band Bliminal back in the early stages of the Astoria music scene. “I got my start in the Astoria music scene back in 2005 when there wasn't much of one happening,” he said. “To be hon-
est, me and my songwriting partner from Bliminal, Justin Finley [of the band Space Jump Live] were the ones to start opening doors for original bands in this neighborhood. Sure, there were bands, but not too many shows happening in local bars or venues. Unless you were a cover band playing familiar tunes, most bars/venues didn't want original music.” Their current lineup includes John Keegan, (vocals, guitar), Benjamin Mark Olson (bass) and Keith Malonis (drums). You can find The Greenstreets frequenting local Astoria spots. “There are those three or four places that consistently continue to embrace the local scene,” Keegan said. “We play such venues as The Quays, The Shillelagh Tavern and The Irish Whiskey Bar, which are fun, comfortable places to play. And we look forward to play newer places that seem to be embracing live original music, such as LIC Beer Project and Joe's Garage.” The Greenstreets are booked to play at Joe's Garage on July 22 on a split bill with Toy Animals. On Aug. 19, they will be playing at BWAC in Red Hook in Brooklyn as part of an Astoria music showcase along with Toy Animals and Absurdo & The Coyote.

Every few months, the popular Astoria bar Judy & Punch turns into something else entirely: a tiny market where local creative entrepreneurs sell their products. The market only lasts for a few hours, so blink and you miss it—but if you make it there, you’ll find some truly unique treasures made by your neighbors. The idea for Astoria Tiny Market was conceived by local illustrator and designer Widad Franco a few years ago. Franco had started her own business, Widycat Designs, in 2013. She primarily designs illustrated greeting cards, but also sells calendars, stickers and prints, as well as children’s books in small batches. “I’ve always loved storytelling, and I realized there were few things in the greeting card market that really spoke to me,” she said of her inspiration to start Widycat Designs. Her cards are sweet, colorful and “highlight the beautiful things in

small moments of everyday life.” She’s also known for her cat illustrations. She’s been adding more greeting cards and other products, and little by little, her business has been growing. She even launched Spanish language greeting cards a couple months ago, which have been very popular because they tend to be harder to find, she said. “And every once in a while, I do handpainted stuff,” she added. “Those are more labors of love that I add to my collection: bird houses, lamp shades, paintings.”
She had founded Widycat Designs when she lived in Brooklyn, but she found the artist community in that borough to be “closed off and not very welcoming of new creative businesses”—perhaps because the community there has been big and established for a very long time, she said. When she moved to Astoria in 2014, she found a very different community. “When I moved to Astoria, I started meeting a lot of creative entrepreneurs, especially women, and I thought there was a lot of opportunity to help each other, because I was slightly traumatized by the experience in Brooklyn where people kept that niche very close, and I was like, ‘Well, you know, there’s no reason why we should do this; we should embrace everyone else who does things like you do,’ and I feel like we’re stronger together. “Being in that environment in Queens, in Astoria, and sharing with other creative people, has actually helped me grow my business,” she continued.
But while she already had an Etsy store and her own online shop, widycat.com—as well as some pop-up shops in local businesses like Brass Owl, Chateau le Woof and Bing’s Gifts in Sunnyside—she knew there was another way she could grow her design business while helping other entrepreneurs. “Meeting all these other creative people and being creative together, I realized that a lot of people did not have an available, cost-effective place to try out their products,” she said. Back then, they were hosted by Crescent Wine and Spirits. “It was a really big success, because everyone was excited about being able to sell their things with other creative entrepreneurs,” Franco said. “The neighborhood was very excited.”

With the wide variety of products— greeting cards, wine, chocolates, knits and more—there was a non-competing element to the market, and “people could buy everything they needed for holiday parties and holiday gifts in one market,” Franco said. Since the first market went so well, the group put on another Astoria Tiny Market for Valentine’s Day, and then another for Mother’s Day. When they moved to Judy & Punch starting with the 2016 holiday market, their attendance tripled. “The guys at Judy & Punch are really open to local businesses, and it’s mutually beneficial, because we bring a different crowd [to the bar],” she said. “It was a really great combination.” Each market has about seven vendors— the founding members plus two or three guest vendors—and is a one-day event. Now, there are about five Astoria Tiny Markets each year.
“We keep growing and we keep expanding and we keep learning, so we might [someday] do a two-day market; who knows,” she said. “It’s very fluid and that’s one of the reasons why it’s important for us to still keep it tiny.” It’s important that as the market grows, it stays creative, effective, efficient and inclusive of everyone, she said. “We really like to emphasize locally made [products] because we want to serve our community,” she said. People from Manhattan and Brooklyn have asked to be part of the market, Franco said, “but we want to keep it Queens makers.” The next Astoria Tiny Market will be at Judy & Punch on Saturday, Aug. 12, from 2 to 6 p.m. Additionally, Franco produces two bazaars a year at Q.E.D., which are also “100 percent Queens makers,” Franco said. These bazaars are much bigger than the Astoria Tiny Market, with about 20 vendors. The Q.E.D. Summer Bazaar is on Saturday, July 22, from noon to 5 p.m. With Widycat Designs, the Astoria Tiny Market and the Q.E.D. bazaar, Franco certainly has her hands full, but she loves what she does. “It’s been a very special experience because I’ve gotten to push myself as an artist and try to offer people something very distinctive that you can’t really find out on the market, and that to me is very important,” she said. There is something much more personal in giving a loved one a greeting card that was lovingly made by a local artist rather than picking up a Hallmark card at a chain pharmacy, and Franco understands that her business’s power is in offering something only she can create.

storians flocked to Astoria Park on Thursday, June 29, to snag a spot on the Great Lawn for the Central Astoria Local Development Coalition’s 2017 Independence Celebration. The crowd was huge, but it still felt like a tight-knit community coming together for a neighborhood event, with music from the Queens Symphony Orchestra and a gorgeous view of the Hell Gate Bridge. Then, on the Fourth of July, all of New York City seemed to converge on Gantry Plaza State Park in Long Island City to watch the sky fill with fireworks from the Macy’s show taking place along the East River, with the Empire State Building lit up in red, white and blue in the background. hat happens when a Parisian girl goes to work in West Africa and then finds herself living in Astoria? The result is her charmingly eclectic mix of subtle French accents mixed with the bold and vibrant fabrics of Africa. “I am from a suburb of Paris,” Alise Abadie told me. “I moved here last year because of my job. I work for a nonprofit, a philanthropic organization where I am a program officer. Before that, I was in Guinea, West Africa.” I asked Abadie how she found the move from Africa to Astoria. “It’s difficult to adjust to New York life,” she said. “People in Africa are really friendly, joyful, they have such a sense of humor. Relationships are very important to people there. You create bonds easily. It really matters how you behave. Music is everywhere. J U LY 2 0 1 7 I B O R O M A G . C O M

People love to dance — at any opportunity. Guinea and New York have almost nothing in common; New York is a more stable place politically of course, but I suppose the hardest adjustment is speaking English all the time. Where I was working in Africa, everyone spoke French. These days I am always seeking out French people, just so I can give my brain a rest!” In Abadie’s apartment, Parisian and African styles meet in every room. In the kitchen, the table is covered in a rich, red, printed tablecloth picked up on her travels, but atop it sat a hunk of crusty bread with a slab of warm butter. A selection of French teas were displayed proudly in vintage style tins — très chic. I asked Alise if she missed the boulangeries of Paris.

“I do,” she said. “I miss the croissants and the bread. I bring cheese in from France sometimes, but you have to be a little sneaky about it. I did discover a wonderful bakery that feels like home here in New York. It’s called Maison Kayser. They have a couple of locations. It’s well worth the trip!” In the living room, the table is again covered in a patterned tablecloth, this one sunshine-yellow, flanked by bright orange and red chairs. Arranged on the walls are all kinds of trinkets and sculptures that Abadie told me she had shipped from her home near Paris. “My colleagues here in New York laughed and said that I was silly to ship things as I could buy everything in the city, but I wanted my things. It isn’t a home without things that you treasure around you.” On a book shelf I noticed a set of tiny golden antelopes peering out across the room. “They were my grandmother’s,” Abadie said, placing them on the table. “My grandfather was also involved in a nongovernmental organization in Africa, so I suppose he must have picked them up for her then. I believe you use them on a dinner

table to rest your knife and fork on between courses.” I asked Abadie if she had discovered any treasures here in Astoria. “Oh yes. There is this gorgeous little shop called the Broadway Silk Store on Broadway and 36th Street. They mainly sell fabrics, but also have a nice selection of homewares, too. It’s run by a family and their cat,” she said. “For dinner it has to be Gastroteca in Astoria. I go there all the time. I also have a subscription to the Museum of the Moving Image, a fantastic museum that’s right here in our neighborhood.” In Abadie’s bedroom there stands a little writing nook as one might imagine from a
Parisian girl. Opposite this is her bed, above which looms a large African wall hanging. “The wall hanging I bought in Benin,” she said. “Each square represents a different king of Benin through various symbols.” Snuggled in various spots around the room were a few cute little penguins. “Did you know that Africa has penguins, too?” Abadie asked me. (I didn’t know this.) “But only in one country, South Africa. They are called African penguins and their presence in South Africa gave name to the Penguin Islands.” Abadie came to Astoria with a plan for her interior design, but when she got here, she found that she had to wing it.
“My plan when I moved to New York was to decorate each room based on a place where I have worked, but when I arrived here I realized how small the apartments were! That plan quickly fell by the wayside,” she said. “Now I have decided that after a year I will move from my West African decorations to my North African fabrics and artifacts from Morocco — completely redo the space.” I told Abadie that it was unlikely that many people would redecorate their space after a year, but I suppose when you see as much of the world as Abadie does, you need a space that reflects all of the places that feel like home to you. From a Parisian suburb to the north and west of Africa to Astoria, New York, I have a feeling that the journey of this intrepid explorer has only just begun. J U LY 2 0 1 7 I B O R O M A G . C O M

Raise the Roof
The expansion of the Ravel Hotel in Long Island City also brings a new member to the neighborhood’s restaurant scene with the addition of Estate Garden Grill, a beer garden and restaurant. Located at 8-08 Queens Plaza South, the hotel recently opened a 10-story tower which includes amenities that hotel guests and residents can enjoy. In addition to a 17,000-square-foot ballroom, the tower will include a 24,000-squarefoot indoor/outdoor reception area and a rooftop pool. It will also double Ravel Hotel’s room count. The outdoor restaurant offers a variety

of options like grilled meats and seafood, sushi, crudo and an oyster bar. Headed by executive chef Seth Levine, the menu includes ceviche, Baja fish tacos, grilled skewers and lobster rolls. The Garden Bar features cocktails, white wine, rose and 15 types of beer on tap. On the first floor, the new building will include the Estate Ballroom, a multipurpose space that can hold up to 400 guests. It
features on-site catering, an outdoor patio and retractable walls. For weddings, the hotel offers bridal and groom suites that include two bedrooms, a kitchen, living room area and two bathrooms. Estate Garden Grill is open Wednesdays through Sundays from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. and also includes a 10-course prix-fixe brunch menu.

Look up Las Catrinas online, and you may draw up a pretty standard “Mexican joint” vibe in your mind. Tacos, margaritas, beers with limes in them, the works. I can’t honestly blame you — there’s plenty of tired Mexican vibes gracing New York’s culinary scene of late. So over-exposed is the south of the border aesthetic that at a time when restaurateurs are trying to bring new and exciting cultures to the hungry masses, Mexican has largely been relegated to a secondary influence in broader fusion experiments: Mexican barbecue, Korean tacos, sushi burritos.

You couldn’t be blamed for thinking that there’s no one left to defend traditional Mexican cuisine. You’d be wrong, but you couldn’t be blamed. Las Catrinas arrived on Broadway in late May, and it is here to remind our poorly under-informed palettes of what Mexican food really is. You won’t find a plate of nachos or a single burrito (technically a San Francisco invention, not a Mexican one) here, but you will find a healthy reverence for the papalo leaf, “Mexican truffles,” and a bonafide, sincere tribute to Mexico brought to life by one of its native sons. Leopoldo “Polo” Tapia hails from Tulum, Mexico, and has worked with fellow Las Catrinas co-owner Lukasz Szydlowski at various restaurants here in Astoria for the past seven years. While both men dreamed of owning a place of their own, Polo also saw his beloved Mexican heritage “destroyed” (his words) by so many other restaurants who tried to combine it with every cuisine they could. He longed
to bring the flavors and colors his mother used to bring to life in her kitchen to hungry mouths here in Queens. With Las Catrinas, the stars finally lined up for both aspiring restaurateurs to take the leap, and for Polo to bring his vision to Broadway, just one block up from the train. Polo aims to bring the spirit of tapas-style dining to Las Catrinas — come with hungry friends, because the small plates here are best when shared en masse. The team here — including restaurant manager Jennifer Szudlowski and fellow restaurateurs Dino Philippou and Taso Pavlou — wants to inject the shop with the back-to-the-roots vibe of Tulum street food. Between the tacos, excellent cocktail menu, and multitude of calaveras (skulls are everywhere — the oven from the previous pizza shop in this space is still here, painted like a great grinning Dia de los Muertes skull), the truck-style influence is more than obvious. But enough about the ambience — let’s dig in.
Our first dish, in keeping with the tapas vibe, was a damn fine ceviche with a delightfully citrusy tartness countered by a smooth, creamy avocado. The white fish, delivered fresh every other day, was light, fresh, and left plenty of room for the next course. Every single ounce on the plate was done entirely in house, and while they admit it makes it harder to do, the result on the plate refused to be ignored. A twist on classic chicharrones was next. Whereas a traditional chicharron would deep fry the pork, Las Catrinas opts to deep fry a thin bed of dough and top it with pickled pork skin (“cueritos”), cabbage, avocado, queso cotija and sour cream with a dash of hot sauce. The dough was quite crispy, but a bit lighter than the fried dough fare you might find at a street fair, and the pork was soft and tender. The hot sauce rounded it out with a lovely kick. Our next dish, a towering beef milanesa cemita with red onion, avocado, homemade sweet chipotle, quesillo and papalo, was a real treat for a sandwich lover like me. Make no mistake, this is no “work lunch” kind of sandwich, unless you get paid to nap immediately after. This sandwich could easily feed three pro wrestlers. But the beef, breaded and smashed thin (much like a schnitzel, in retrospect), was deliciously smoky, and the chipotle hinted at a nice sweetness to bring it home. improved, perhaps a bit more sauce could be added next time, but I was more than able to dress it up to my heart’s content with the chipotle, chile and hot sauces provided on every table. I’d like to draw your attention to an ingredient back at the top of that last paragraph, “papalo,” a basil-like herb grown only in Mexico that Polo specifically hunted down for this restaurant. Tried though I did, I couldn’t get him to give up his supplier here in Queens, but it was a delightful leaf that kept popping up in his dishes and drinks (stay tuned till the end of this piece — Jennifer Szudlowski found a way to use it in a drink that surprised even him). If you want the real, down-home Mexican experience, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more authentic one on Broadway this summer. The tacos were up next, both fish and beef. The pescado taco, with pineapple, cabbage, cucumber, red onion, citrus and chipotle mayo, hit my sinuses with an excellent blast of spiciness smoothed out by the mayo. But the birria taco is what really sold the place for me. This is a slow worker, but give this big juicy beef stew taco from Michoacan, Mexico, a chance — it was easily my favorite of the night, and perfect for a dinner, lunch, or quick bite to go.

A quesadilla like I had never seen before landed in front of me next, the Huitlacoche. They didn’t tell me at first what protein was in it, and after guessing chicken, pork and even turkey, they finally revealed the truth: this hardy, thick quesadilla was a mushroom. The Huitlacoche mushroom, affectionately known as the “Mexican truffle,” is an enormous fungus found only in Mexico and has been served as a delicacy since the time of the Aztecs. It was remarkably good. I’m no stranger to mushrooms at all (give me a good portobello burger any day), but this truly took me by surprise. Add in the delicious, gooey cheese, and you’ve got a quesadilla pull-apart shot just waiting to be Instagrammed. Before I round out the culinary side, let me dive into the drink menu for a moment — and what a cocktail tour de force it is. Everything here, food and drink alike, is designed to be paired together. I certainly love a good standalone cocktail, but I always appreciate
papalo leaf — a hardy, savory herb not really known for its cocktail game. The result, the Papalo Pineapple Cooler, was so good he threw it on the menu. I can second that, and our photographer, Bridget Kenny, can third it. This was easily our favorite drink of the night. Get it on a hot, summery day. While I had already been sold on the food and the ambience, the last dish is where I finally saw that Polo isn’t just blowing smoke when he says he wants to bring the spirit of his home to this place. The Cochinta Pibil, a pulled pork stew with pickled red onions, chile manzano, cilantro and rice is wonderful. So to are the tortillas — delicious, soft and warm little food blankets that they are. But what finally made me see the respect for culture Polo, Jennifer, Lukasz, and their partners are bringing to Las Catrinas was the towels the tortillas came out in. Every single one the restaurant uses for serving has been hand-knit by Polo’s madre in Mexico and shipped here especially for this. And that, dear readers, is why you must try Las Catrinas. It’s one thing to bring a culture’s cuisine to life, but it is much harder to open a window into another culture. Think back, if you can, to the
artisans that have truly yanked you out of your day to day and into their world via their craft. Leaving Las Catrinas that Thursday night in early June, I couldn’t help but think Polo and his staff of passionate makers had opened a window into another culture I didn’t know I had never truly experienced. Many restaurants, Mexican and otherwise, put together a delicious, wonderful menu of what they think you think you want. In today’s hyper-competitive, high-stakes restaurant landscape, it’s almost foolish not to. Las Catrinas has gone a different route, and have put themselves out on a huge limb to do so. Instead of serving “Mexican food,” they are trying to connect you back to Mexico through food. Rather than serving you what you think you want, they want to show you something you never knew you wanted in the first place. It’s going to be tough to go back to nachos after this. it when I can imbibe along with my meal, and each of these drinks hits its mark while allowing the food to shine. The Riviera Maya white sangria and El Mujer Dormida red sangria are going to be the brunch hits when Las Catrinas opens its outdoor seating in late July, and the dark La Calavera with muddled basil, blackberry and mescal will pleasantly drown out the end of many a long night. If you like your drinks super sweet, the Watermelon Aqua Fresca (like a Jolly Rancher in a glass) is for you, and if you like smokiness, try the Corazon Negro, a whiskey-based ginger drink with activated charcoal that instantly brought to mind a tropical thunderstorm. And of course, if you’re here for margaritas, the Dios Mio has you covered. But that sleeper herb hit from earlier, the papalo leaf, comes roaring back to the forefront in Jennifer’s original Papalo Pineapple Cooler. This wonderfully summery rum concoction sparkles with pineapple, lime and muddled papalo, and surprised both myself and Polo, when he first had it. As the Las Catrinas team was still early in the opening process, Szudlowski was looking for something to build a wholly original drink from, and Polo jokingly suggested his homeland’s
