IHSWCA Officers

President’s Corner

Tournament marks start of a new chapter for IHSWCA This issue of UNITE is dedicated to the IHSWCA’s inaugural Team Duals State Championship event. It is very satisfying to see this event come to fruition after a year of hard work by many dedicated people. Numerous committee meetings have been held over the past year in Columbus, Indianapolis and Noblesville in addition to a plethora of correspondence via e-mail. The ISWA has been instrumental in offering support in a variety of areas as we have planned this event. Tom Clark and the Indiana wrestling officials have been great to work with as well as Westfield High School’s athletic Department (Mr. Bill Davis and Mr. Andy Tebbe), and their wrestling staff, who have also been wonderful to work with in preparing the facilities. In the end the IHSWCA board of directors hopes this is a competitive wrestling tournament that allows schools of all sizes to shine as well as provide top notch competition in dual meet format for wrestling fans to watch and celebrate. This has not been an easy journey for the participating schools as tough decisions had to be made by wrestling coaches and athletic departments with regard to competition weigh-in points, scheduling, travel and lodging to name a few. I applaud the participating schools for supporting this event, and they will be able to forever say, “our team was one of the first 24 schools to participate in the 1st annual IHSWCA championship event in 2012!” The first two rounds will take place at 10:00am and 12:00pm at Westfield 2

HS with all 24 teams wrestling on 12 mats. The placement round for 3rd – 8th place in all divisions will occur at 2:00pm on 9 mats. There will be an awards ceremony between round 3 and the finals where all wrestlers will receive an award of some type to commemorate their participation in this event. The final round will see 3 dual meets (1 for each class) wrestled side-by-side in Westfield’s main gymnasium with an award ceremony to follow. The wrestlers in the top two teams in every class will receive a custom Brute sublimated shirt for placing first or second. A big thanks goes out to Jeff Schaefer, and EI Sports, for working with Brute in sponsoring these awards. Trackwrestling will be live streaming four mats throughout the entire event. Broadcastsport.net will be on site during the final round at 6:30pm to webcast the finals with live commentary. There has been much banter over the past year surrounding this event. Whether someone agrees, or disagrees, with the concept of this event, there will be no denying that there will be great competition at Westfield High School on December 22. There will certainly be an evaluation period following this event with improvements to come for the following year, but all great events have to start somewhere. The IHSWCA is proud of the event that we have created for this season, and we hope that it is the beginning of a long line of Team State Dual events. Respectfully Submitted, Trent McCormick IHSWCA President

Broadcastsport.net and Trackwrestling to air event We will be LIVE VIDEO webcasting the IHSWCA Team State Wrestling Tourney at Westfield on December 22nd. Our plans are to have 6 separate broadcast crews with each crew covering 2 mats at once. We need to get some information about your team to help us get setup for our broadcasts. Here is a sample of what our page will look like: http://www. broadcastsport.net/ListenPages/ListenWrestlingTeamState-IHSWCA.aspx Please do not provide that link to any of you fans. Just have them use: www. broadcastsport.net instead, because we have to track zipcodes of our audience. We need a complete varsity roster including who your ‘starting’ wrestler is at each weight. As you can see on our page, we will be maintaining live scoresheets of each dual meet with individual match scores. Since most coaches will jockey their lineups to best matchup with the current opponent,

we need to have all of your possible wrestlers entered into our database. Of course, our announcers are not going to recognize each and every wrestler, so we need help so that we can properly identify them during our broadcasts. We in the broadcast industry would love it if wrestlers wore numbers on their singlets, but I don’t expect that to happen anytime soon! So we need a person associated with your team to help us keep everybody straight. If you have a non-wrestling wrestler or a parent that knows all of your wrestlers, that could help us that would be great! He, or she, could either set by our crew or just be reliable at texting us the name of the wrestler at the start of each match. In addition, if we could request that each wrestler submit a short biography about himself, that would help add a human-interest element to our broadcast. Possible topics: include how many years they have wrestled; plans

after high school; hobbies or interests outside of wrestling; and any other notable events or awards. Do you know of any potential announcers that would like to help us at Westfield. It can be slightly offensive to our viewers, if our broadcasters seem to be biased for one particular school. But if that is the school that they are the most familiar with, it is only natural to sound biased. We are trying to locate volunteers from all over the state to provide us with a more balanced broadcast. We are always in need of sponsors, as I’m sure you are as well. We don’t want to take away from monies that you need to pay for your trip expenses. But if you know of a business or individual that would like to become involved, please let us know. We would like to raise at least $100 from each school’s area. Trackwrestling will also have cameras live streaming all day. 3

Guest Commentary

Do you want to be tough? By Steve Fraser Do you want to be tough? Do you want to be able to out battle your opponents? Do you have a dream of becoming an NCAA or Olympic champion some day? Or maybe you want to excel as a MMA fighter after your wrestling career? Then get your tail involved with Greco-Roman wrestling! Yes, of course you can – and should – wrestle folkstyle. That is the style preferred by our nation. However, please don’t stop there. If you want to become an Olympic or World champion some day, you have got to wrestle all three styles of wrestling. Folkstyle, freestyle and Steve Fraser Greco-Roman are the three styles I am talking about. In fact, if you want to become an NCAA champion or even a state champion you should be wrestling all three styles. Just ask the many superstars of our sport like Kendall Cross (Olympic Champion), Kevin Jackson (Olympic Champion), Sammie Henson (World champion), Kyle Dake (3xNCAA Champ) or David Taylor (NCAA Champ) to name just a few. All are experienced in Greco-Roman Wrestling. Yes, Greco teaches you upper body wrestling techniques, obviously. However, Greco-Roman wrestling teaches and trainsyou in so many more areas of the sport. Besides becoming a dangerous wrestler with throws and such, Greco teaches great pummeling skills and great hand fighting skills. Greco develops super core strength and outstanding cardiovascular conditioning. It allows for you to shut down your opponent’s attacks and neutralizes many lower body attacks. Not to mention all of the mental 34

strength that it helps to develop. Why do you think so many former Greco wrestlers have done so well in the MMA world? Dan Henderson, for example, who is still fighting at 42 years old, would be the first to tell you how beneficial Greco was to his MMA success. Dan has competed in the MMA for 15 years. He has won numerous titles and belts in multiple organizations such as the UFC, Strikeforce, and PRIDE. At 42, he is still considered one of the toughest, most dangerous fighters in the game. Before his outstanding 40 fight career in the cage began, Henderson was a two-time U.S. Olympian (1992, 1996) in Greco-Roman wrestling. As written and quoted by Jordan Newmark July 26, 2012: http://www.ufc.com/news/ Greco-Roman-Wrestling-BuildingToughness-Daily “You definitely have to be dedicated,” said Henderson of being an Olympian. “You have to be able to learn and to get into shape and be able to do all the crosstraining that is involved. I think that’s why I’m so mentally tough, because I competed like that. Wrestlers in general are fairly mentally tough. The biggest thing is the dedication involved - the commitment. It was obviously one of my goals. It was something that I wouldn’t trade for anything. It definitely made me much more of a patriotic person. There are all the countries there, and to represent the United States was awesome. Barcelona was my first time and I was 21 years old. I was really excited about it, but it didn’t compare to wrestling

for my country in my home country in Atlanta. I think I was the first American to compete, so the crowd was really waiting for an American to come out and it happened to be me.” What Henderson has been able to accomplish in MMA should be reason enough to sway the uninformed of a Greco-Roman wrestling mat’s ability to forge hardened fighters. But “Hendo” is far from alone, as UFC veteran Matt Lindland won a silver medal at 76 kg at the 2000 Olympics, former UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion Randy Couture was a three-time Olympic alternate, “The People’s Champ” Chael P. Sonnen won high honors in several international tournaments and was an Olympic alternate, and the original depiction of Greco-Roman wrestling in the Octagon was multiple Olympic alternate and UFC Hall of Famer Dan “The Beast” Severn. The facts of the matter are clear, GrecoRoman wrestling can make a man out of you. “I believe that Olympic caliber GrecoRoman wrestlers have an advantage in a lot of particular positions, but more importantly, at the highest levels everything is a fight,” affirms Lindland. “You fight for points that don’t come easy, you fight to make it on teams, you are fighting to medal at the tournaments. You absolutely have to fight for every inch and the word used is literally ‘pummel’. These are some of the most mentally tough men I know.” So, wrestle your hardest this fall and winter in your folkstyle program. But when the weather starts to warm in the spring and summer, don’t wait! Get involved with Greco-Roman wrestling! It will change your wrestling/fighting career forever!
