The 2013 Knights added another chapter to the most dominant stretch in the history of Indiana High School baseball. Lafayette Central Catholic won its unprecedented fifth consecutive state title and 33rd consecutive tournament game with a dramatic, 9 inning come from behind 4-3 win over Vincennes Rivet in the state championship game. The 2013 seniors graduated without a tournament loss. Central Catholic won its sixth state championship in the past seven years and seventh title in the past ten years. The Knights’ impressive run also includes playing in the state finals nine out of the past twelve years. This trip to Victory Field saw the Knights score two runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game before winning the championship with a walk-off single by freshman Adam Lovell in the bottom of the ninth. Freshman Luke Fusiek’s two out single scored fellow freshman Jackson Anthrop in the bottom of the seventh and pushed the game to extra innings.
school record for wins (31) and finished with an overall record of 31-5. The Knights also captured the Catholic Classic championship and its second consecutive Hoosier Conference championship in its second season back as a member of the conference. This marked the 19th consecutive year that Central Catholic has been crowned a conference champion. The Knights were also County Champs by virtue of sweeping all county schools – McCutcheon (5-3), Lafayette Jeff (3-1), Harrison (11-1 in 5 innings), and West Lafayette (2-1 and 8-1).

In an effort to keep everyone informed, I am sending out this “Start of School” letter with pertinent information. First, please join me in a “Prayer for a New School Year.” Spirit of God, fill our hearts with a desire to seek truth and rejoice in beauty. Help us to know what is pleasing to You and to understand what is right and good in Your sight. Give us the Spirit of Learning that we may please You by our thoughts and love You in Your creation. Give all teachers Your constant encouragement and guide them in their good work. Spirit of God, make us effective witnesses of Your truth to all whose lives we touch. A brief biography of each teacher follows. Jacqueline “Jackie” Jansing Jackie graduated from LaPorte High School in 2001. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Science from Purdue University in 2005. Jackie was awarded the Woodrow Wilson Indiana Teaching Fellow Scholarship in 2009, and received her Master’s degree in Secondary Education from IUPUI in 2011. Jackie has been teaching 6th and 8th grade science at Guion Creek Middle School since 2010. She is Catholic, married to Andrew and they have two daughters. Jackie will be teaching junior high science. Jennifer “Jenny” Peters Jenny graduated from LaPorte High School in 1999. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Biology Teaching from Purdue University in 2003. Jenny started her teaching career by teaching biology and physical science for two years at Buckhorn High School in New Market, Alabama. For the last six years she has been the science department chair at Tri-County Middle Senior High School where
she taught Biology I, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Biology II: Genetics and AP Biology. She is Catholic, married to Nicholas and they have two sons. Jenny and Jackie are also sisters! Jenny will be teaching high school biology. Julie Rifner Julie graduated from Benton Central High School in 2002. Julie studied abroad in the fall of 2003 at the Universite de Picardie Jules Verne in Amiens, France and she received her Bachelor’s degree in French and Spanish from Ball State University in 2005. Miss Rifner also obtained her Teacher Certification from Purdue University in 2008. Julie was a substitute teacher at Benton Central for one year and taught French and Spanish for two years at Tecumseh Middle School. Last year she taught Spanish at Harrison High School. Julie is also an active member of the Church of Christ. Julie will be teaching high school upper level Spanish. Jill Starr Jill graduated from Newton Community High School in Newton, IL in 2003. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2007. Jill taught 5th grade math at All Saints Catholic School in Logansport, Indiana and is a personal tutor to several students. She was also the Ministry Coordinator for the St. Francis of Assisi University Parish and Newman Center in Muncie, Indiana. Jill attended an AP Calculus workshop this summer. Jill is Catholic and her husband’s name is Shannon. Jill will be teaching high school upper level math. Andree Lavignette Andree graduated from West Lafayette High School in 1977. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Purdue University in 1988 and received additional Bachelor’s degrees in Art History in 1991 and Art Education in 1999 also from Purdue University. She studied at the University of Grenoble, France and did Master’s research work in London, England prior to receiving her Master’s degree in Visual and Performing Arts, Painting and Art History from Purdue University in 1993. Andree also has a love of ballet. She was a member of the ballet department at Indiana University and teaches ballet at the Morton Center. Andree was a substitute teacher in the White County area schools, and was a private teacher/tutor for a student with autism for several years. She was also the art teacher for West Central Elementary School in Francesville, Indiana for eleven years. Andree is Catholic and has a grown son. Andree will be teaching junior high art. Charles “Charlie” Roberts Charlie graduated from Memorial High School in Evansville in 1996. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management with a minor in Business Administration from Indiana State University in 2000. Administration from Indiana University in 2002 and will complete the Teacher Certification Program in Elementary Education from Indiana Wesleyan University in May 2014. Charlie was the Assistant Director of the Athletic Ticket Operations at Purdue University for seven years. Last year he worked as a Student Supervisor at Sunnyside Middle School and was their 5th grade girls’ basketball coach and one of the Assistant Baseball Coaches at Central Catholic. He has also been an Event Supervisor at Central Catholic for the last two years. Charlie is Catholic and married to Lindsay and they have a daughter and a son. Charlie will be the Assistant Athletic Director and will be teaching junior high digital communication. Student Orientation in Eberle Gym Junior High School Orientation takes place on Monday, August 12, 2013 at Central Catholic in Eberle Gym from 9:00-10:30am. This orientation is for all parents who have a junior high school student or who are new to Central Catholic (includes new high school parents). High School Orientation takes place on Monday, August 12, 2013 at Central Catholic in Eberle Gym from 11:00-12:00pm. High school parents are not required to attend high school orientation, but they are encouraged to come and sign up for athletic events, Parent Guild, Academic Booster Club, etc. Start of School The 2013-2014 school years officially starts on August 13, 2013. The first day of school will also be our first all school Mass. Students must wear their Mass uniform for every all school Mass day. The next all school Mass day will be Thursday, August 15th to celebrate the Assumption of Blessed Mary. Student need to arrive at school by 8:00 am, as the first bell rings at 8:05 am. The end of the day is 3:05 pm. The first day is a 1/2 day at the elementary, but a full day at CC. Back to School ‘Knight’ Central Catholic will hold the annual Back to School ‘Knight’ on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 in Eberle Gym. From 6:30-6:55 there

Teachers review what the students will learn throughout the school year. Extended Labor Day You and your son(s)/daughter(s) have an extended Labor Day due to an all-day Faculty In-service on Tuesday, September 3, 2013. Labor Day is Monday, September 2, 2013. Students resume class on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at 8:00 am. Knightly News Central Catholic’s Knightly News comes out during the first week of every month. The school sends out a mass email to parents and friends of the community notifying everyone that the new issue is on our website. The newsletter is full of stories about the successes of our students. It contains information on upcoming events. The principal, assistant principal, campus minister, director of guidance, and our athletic director have monthly columns. It contains the lunch menu for the next month along with the Athletic Department Volunteer List for the month. Please take time to read the newsletter so you will know what has happened at school and obtain knowledge about important issues and upcoming events. To offset the cost of publishing the newsletter, we now accept ½ page advertisements for $50 per issue. If you own a business and you want to advertise your services to the Central Catholic community, this is a great way to inform everyone! Principal Press The weekly Principal Press is another great way to keep informed on the latest upcoming events. We are all looking forward to a great start to the 2013-2014 school year! The feel of the school is one of excitement and happiness. That makes for a great learning environment for everyone. The Lord’s presence in our building can really be felt. I want to touch upon a couple items that I seem to have received a few questions about. Uniforms: I hope everyone has purchased their uniforms and is ready to go for the new school year. Shoe Carnival will again have a sale this Sunday from 7-9pm offering 30% off school shoes for Central Catholic students. A reminder that all pants/shorts must have the CC logo monogrammed on them and skort length must not exceed 3 inches from the top of the knee to the bottom of the skort. Skorts must be modest fit, not tight fitting. Attendance: A quick reminder about attendance. Daily attendance of each student is essential to succeed at Central Catholic High School. Research shows that educational achievement is directly related to attendance. A student who misses a day of school misses a day of education that cannot be retrieved in its entirety. It is imperative
that students be in attendance each school day. Students may not receive credit for a class should they be absent from that class more than 10 times during a semester. Please make sure that you notify the front office if your son/daughter will be absent. When they return to school they should bring appropriate documentation associated to their absence (parent note, Dr. note, etc.). Bullying: Indiana law now requires schools to establish guidelines for bullying. We will be forming a committee this fall to address the needs we have in this area. New guidelines in our Knightline parent/student handbook are as follows: Definitions, Interventions, & Responsibilities (IC 20-33-8-0.2) a. Bullying: overt, excessive and unreciprocated teasing, taunting, repeated acts or gestures including: i) Verbal or written communications transmitted; ii) Physical acts committed; or iii) Any other behaviors committed; by a student or group of students against another student with the intent to harass, ridicule, humiliate, intimidate, or harm the other student. We will work to establish a more detailed policy to comply with Indiana law.
Mrs. Velma Fonderoli Director of Guidance
As we begin the school year seniors need to be starting the college application process. Many of our students apply to both Indiana University and Purdue University, so I am covering some of the important information that seniors need to know. November 1st is the priority application deadline for both of the universities. It is extremely important that students start working on their applications, so they have all of the items needed well before the priority filing date. Students will need to use the Common Application for applying to Purdue. The essay topics are currently on Purdue’s website. Students should start writing the essay now and also ask a teacher to write their recommendation for the teacher evaluation (TE Report). The teacher will then receive and email from the Common Application regarding the TE Report. It is very important that the student tell the teacher to complete the paper form of the TE Report as the school reports may be sent online. Students should also contact me in guidance to ask for a completed secondary school report (SE Report). All of these forms will be mailed by the guidance office
along with a transcript and schedule. Students may also give us a resume to be mailed which lists activities, community service, and work experience. Mailing the reports from the guidance office will assure that all of the reports get to the different universities and every piece of the application is turned in. Students can apply to Indiana University by going to their website. The application includes a personal statement and counselor signature form. The student completes the application online and prints off the counselor signature page and brings it to the guidance office to be mailed with the transcript, schedule, and resume if so desired. Students who wish to be accepted to I.U. must complete math through pre-calculus. Students who have not met this requirement will not be accepted for admission. One last detail to remember is the application fee. If a student is on free and reduced lunch, they may ask the guidance office for a fee waiver. This must be mailed right away. If thirty days elapse, the application will be void. Remember that we are here to answer all of your questions regarding the application process. Fall Mass Schedule 2013
The Campus Ministry office serves the Central Catholic community by emphasizing an authentic Catholic identity. Our students are educated in a Catholic culture in every classroom, not only in theology class, and in the community life of Central Catholic; however, it is the example and support of our mission in the home that ensures our success. Communicating Christ embraces participation in the sacramental life of the Catholic Church. The entire school body attends the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass at least weekly, and an additional Class Mass is also offered weekly in our beautiful St. Joseph Chapel. Students participate in Eucharistic Adoration every first Friday of the month, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation begins the seasons of Advent and Lent. Spiritual direction from our parish priests can also be arranged through this office. Intertwined with a student’s spiritual nourishment is the academic focus on the Catholic Faith. Belief is strengthened by understanding. Therefore, a systematic study of the teachings and history of the Catholic Church has been developed according to the standards issued by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Central Catholic articulates the authentic teachings of the Catholic Church and takes seriously the mission to proclaim the Good News. Pope John Paul II told young people, “Jesus Christ needs your energies, your enthusiasm, your youthful ideals, in order to make the Gospel of Life penetrate the fabric of society.” Taking this call seriously, Central Catholic encourages her students to serve as Christ served. Similar to the academic and athletic demands required of our students, Central Catholic prescribes a minimum service hour total for each student to fulfill. Rather than an oppressive rule, the proper understanding for this service should be Christ’s example of charity. The specific requirements are included in the student Knightline handbook. These three pillars of our Catholic identity: the sacraments, theological academic rigor, and Christian service are reinforced by yearly spiritual retreats. Religious orders, faithful priests and authentically Catholic speakers are invited to deepen our student’s relationship with Christ. Also, the senior class hosts the junior class retreat (SEARCH) as an example of servant leadership. Feel free to contact me with any questions, comments, or concerns. Matthew Ess, Sam Scheetz and Sam Kochert 5th place in Senior Group Exhibit and State Award in Senior Division - Outstanding Indiana Entry Award. This exhibit was also the Indiana representative at the Museum of American History at Smithsonian History Day. The Fall Sports are off to a terrific start. We have 175 senior high students (71% of all students) participating in a fall sport at Central Catholic! It is great to see such a large amount of our students active and representing our school. All teams have started their competitions and are gearing up for their first contests! As the new school year begins, I am very optimistic that our good fortune will continue. Most importantly, I pray that all of our athletes – regardless of championships – learn the true value of competing in a Christ like manner and learn values and lessons that will carry over long after they graduate. We all choose to look back because it is indeed good to reflect from time to time, but the future is ahead of us. Let’s continue to make Central Catholic athletics a model for sportsmanship and high character! GO KNIGHTS!!
