Liebe Leserinnen und Leser! Die letzte Schlacht des jr15 bei der FSAE in Michigan wurde geschlagen und hat große Fußabdrücke für seinen Nachfolger, den jr16 hinterlassen. Wie auch in den letzten Jahren begann das Team rund um den jr16 bereits vor über einem Jahr mit der Konzeptionierung und Planung. Dies geschah parallel zu den letzten Bewerbsvorbereitungen und letztendlich zu den Bewerben des jr15, dem erfolgreichsten Mitglied der Weaselfamilie. Wie Sie Sich vorstellen können arbeiten wir Tag und Nacht daran die Erfolge der letzten Jahre weiter zu toppen, getreu unserem Motto: Never Stop Pushing!
ist. Am 15. April wurde der jr16 dann voller Stolz und in Weaselmanier der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert.
Einige unserer Arbeitsstunden fielen den Reglementänderungen zum Opfer. Aber kein Grund zu verzagen, man wächst mit seinen Herausforderungen. Den ersten Erfolg haben wir bereits im April mit dem jr16 verbuchen können. Er ist das erste Fahrzeug seit 10 Jahren, welches bereits vor (!) dem RollOut aus eigener Kraft gefahren
Ihnen, liebe Leserinnen und Leser wünsche ich nun viel Spaß beim Durchblättern und Lesen der folgenden Seiten und mit den Fotos, die wir von dem einen oder anderen Bewerb mitgebracht haben.
Im Namen von joanneum racing graz möchte ich mich für die tatkräftige Unterstützung der Jungweasels und den Studierenden aus anderen Studiengängen für ihre aufopfernde Tätigkeit bedanken. Nur so kann der Wissentransfer für künftige Generationen gesichert und die Grenzen dieses Projektes wiedereinmal erweitert werden. Im Namen des gesamten Teams von joanneum racing graz möchte ich mich an dieser Stelle auch bei allen Sponsoren, Fertigern und Materiallieferanten bedanken, die uns dieses Jahr unterstützt haben. Nur mit ihrer Hilfe war es uns wieder Möglich, einen neuen Rennwagen auf so hohem Niveau auf die Räder zu stellen.

Wo die Weasels wohnen Wie sehen eigentlich jene Orte aus, an denen das Team um joanneum racing graz das Unmögliche möglich macht? Wo verbringen die Weasels den größten Teil ihrer Freizeit damit, ihren Rennboliden auf den Asphalt der Formula-Student-Strecken zu bekommen? Oder ganz einfach gesagt – wo wohnen eigentlich unsere Weasels? Ganz klar: Ihr natürliches Habitat sind Werkstatt, Schleifraum und Co.
CAD CAD – das steht für Computer Aided Design. In ihrem Konstruktionsstudio werden Fragen der Verwaltung geklärt und Besprechungen abgehalten. Allen voran geht es jedoch um die Konstruktion in fast allen Bereichen, abgesehen von der Elektrik. Bis zu den Weihnachtsfeiertagen verbringen die Weasels große Teile ihrer Zeit in diesen Räumlichkeiten.
Laminier- oder Projektraum Im Laminier- beziehungsweise Projektraum lagern Materialien, die eine maßgebliche Rolle für die Qualität des Wagens spielen. Hier dreht sich alles um Leichtbau und Carbon, man kümmert sich um das Gehäuse des Rennautos und seine Luftführung.
Werkstatt Die Werkstatt kann man mit Fug und Recht als Herzstück der Räumlichkeiten von joanneum racing graz bezeichnen – an diesem Ort wird der Wagen zusammengebaut. Dies ist zudem die Lagerhalle für bisherige Rennwagen des Teams, für Ersatzteile und Materialien aller Art. Unsere Weasels verbringen Stunden um Stunden an diesem einen, liebgewonnenen Ort.
Maschinenraum Viele Bestandteile des Rennautos werden von joanneum racing graz direkt im hauseigenen Maschinenraum gefertigt. Dreh- und Fräßteile, Gehäuseformen und Adapterplatten kommen von hier – mit mehr Zeitressourcen wäre es sogar möglich, zahlreiche weitere Teile selbst zu produzieren. Die Maschinen sind allesamt von hoher Qualität.

Motorprüfstand Erst durch die Leistung ihrer Motoren zählen die Boliden unseres Teams zu den schnellsten der Formula Student. Am Motorprüfstand fließt viel Zeit in ihre Optimierung – hier werden sie eingefahren und Daten für die Steuergeräte erfasst.
Schleifraum Bei der Endfertigung des Rennautos spielt der Schleifraum eine wichtige Rolle. Carbonteile und Oberflächen werden hier bearbeitet, es heißt schleifen, nochmals schleifen und kitten. In diesem Raum werden außerdem Bauteile verklebt, der Wagen nimmt also hier erstmals Gestalt an. Vor allem im Januar verbringen die Weasels viel Zeit hinter den verschlossenen Türen des Schleifraumes – schließlich müssen die Details und Neuerungen des Autos erst einmal geheim bleiben.
MT-Labor Im Mechatroniklabor oder schlicht MT-Labor hat der Strom das Sagen. Hier plant und baut das Team um joanneum racing graz den gesamten Kabelbaum des Rennwagens: Platinen werden gezeichnet, es wird bestückt und getestet. In der fortgeschrittenen Bauphase werden hier außerdem die Daten der Tests unseres neuen Boliden ausgewertet.
Danke an FH JOANNEUM Die Weasels haben viel Platz für ihre Arbeit und um sich auszutoben. Das ist nicht selbstverständlich. Ohne die Großzügigkeit der FH JOANNEUM, die Jahr für Jahr die Räume zur Verfügung stellt, wäre es gar nicht möglich, innerhalb kürzester Zeit so herausragende Fahrzeuge zu bauen. Das Team lebt einen Großteil der Saison in Werkstatt, MT-Labor und seit Herbst 2016 auch im neuen Praktikantenraum. Hier wird getüftelt, gebaut und entwickelt aber ebenso gelacht, getanzt und gelebt. Die Räume werden Tag und Nacht gebraucht und genutzt. Noch einmal ein großes Dankeschön an die FH JOANNEUM. Die Weasels freuen sich auf viele weitere gemeinsame Jahre und eine gute Zusammenarbeit weiterhin.

Willkommen in der Familie Am 15. April hatte das neuste Mitglied der Weaselfamilie seinen ersten großen Auftritt. Nach unzähligen Tagen und Nächten voller Arbeit wurde der jr16 feierlich präsentiert. Das Roll Out des neuen Rennboliden fand im Audimax der FH JOANNEUM Graz statt. Mehr als 400 Gäste, darunter Freunde, Verwandte und Rennsportbegeisterte aus ganz Europa, waren nach Graz gekommen, um bei der Enthüllung des neuen Boliden dabei zu sein. Monatelang hat sich das gesamte Team auf diesen besonderen Abend vorbereitet. Mit Sekt und Brötchen vom „Das Eggenberg“ wurden die Gäste im Foyer der FH JOANNEUM Graz empfangen. In rotem Samt gehüllt wartete der jr16 auf der Bühne des Audimax bereits auf seine Enthüllung. Teammitglied Verena Sophie Maier führte durch den Abend. Ehrengäste wie Vertreter der Stadt Graz und der Fachhochschule fanden nur lobende Worte für das Team. Die Lehrenden des Studiengangs Fahrzeugtechnik waren auf ihre Studenten ebenso stolz. Mit der Vorstellung der einzelnen Baugruppen rückte der erste öffentliche Auftritt des Rennboliden immer näher. Teamleader Christian Rosenhammer und Technical Director Hort Emathinger hatten schließlich die Ehre, den jr16 unter tosendem Applaus zu Enthüllen. Die Besucher waren begeistert vom neuen Rennboliden, der für diesen Abend das beliebteste Fotomodell sein sollte. Im jr16 steckt nicht nur das neueste technische Know-How, sondern auch viel Herzblut jedes einzelnen Teammitgliedes. Dieser Erfolg wurde beim anschließenden ÖH-Clubbing im Audimax gebührend gefeiert. Studenten, Familie und Ehrengäste erhoben ihre Gläser auf den jr16 und damit auf eine erfolgreiche Formula Student Saison.

So lief die Saison 2016 ab In der Sommersaison 2016 standen für joanneum racing graz diesmal drei Bewerbe an: Die Weasels begannen mit dem Heimspiel in Österreich, dicht gefolgt von einem Ausflug nach Deutschland. Den krönenden Abschluss dieser Saison bildete schließlich ein Trip nach Japan, zum ersten Mal in der Geschichte des Teams. Bereits im Mai hinter sich gebracht wurde übrigens das Rennen in Michigan.

Der jr15 hat nochmal gezeigt, was er kann. Dank der Hilfe von MRacing, dem Partnerteam der University of Michigan, konnte ein mehr als erfolgreicher Aufenthalt verzeichnet werden. Insgesamt fünf Awards wurden von den Weasels mit in die Heimat gebracht.
Formula Student Germany, Hockenheim 9. bis 14. August 2016 Das Event am Hockenheimring in Deutschland ist eines der größten in Europa und für joanneum racing graz ein ganz gutes Pflaster. Letztes Jahr war das Endergebnis ein sehr respektabler dritter Platz in der Gesamtwertung. Aber die Konkurrenz war in Deutschland auch dieses Jahr wieder sehr hart, denn es waren 73 Teams aus allen Ecken der Welt, die sich dort mit Fahrzeugen mit Verbrennungsmotor eingeschrieben hatten und mit den Weasels messen wollten.
Auch dieses Jahr stand Spielberg natürlich wieder auf dem Programm, es handelt sich ja sozusagen um das Heimspiel von joanneum racing graz. Auf dem Red Bull Ring wollten sich die Weasels natürlich als das beste österreichische Team zeigen und mit Heimvorteil in das Rennen starten. Im Vorjahr schafften sie es ja schon auf Gesamtrang vier.
Formula Student Japan, Fukuroi 6. bis 10. September 2016 Für joanneum racing graz war der Flug nach Japan eine Premiere und ganz klar etwas Besonderes. Die Reise nach Fukuroi war kein einfaches Projekt und umfasste weit mehr als nur die vier Event-Tage im September. Aber wie oft bekommt man schon die Gelegenheit, einmal rund um die halbe Welt zu fliegen, um dort dann mit dem eigenen Rennteam an einem Rennen teilzunehmen? Es war ganz sicher ein unvergessliches Erlebnis für die Weasels.

Formula SAE Michigan
Grande Finale für den jr15 Bevor der jr15 in den wohlverdienten Bewerbsruhestand geschickt wird, hat er in Michigan noch einmal aufgezeigt, warum er der bislang erfolgreichste Bolide der joanneum racing graz - Geschichte ist. 120 Formula-Student-Teams aus der ganzen Welt matchten sich vom 11. bis 14. Mai 2016 im Rahmen der FSAE Michigan auf dem Michigan International Speedway in der Nähe von Ann Arbor um die Topplatzierungen in den dynamischen und statischen Events. Fünf Teams reisten von Europa aus über den großen Teich, um am Bewerb des ältesten offiziellen Formula-Student-Austragungsortes teilzunehmen. Für die Weasels begann die Reise schon einen Monat zuvor, als Mitte April der jr15 sicher verpackt und über den großen Teich vorgeschickt wurde. Einige Tage später trudelten auch seine Teammitglieder nach und nach in den USA ein und gewöhnten sich und das Fahrzeug an die Wettbewerbsatmosphäre. Die ist schon eine alte Bekannte, hat der Vorjahresbolide doch bereits vier Bewerbe in Deutschland, Österreich, Ungarn und Italien erfolgreich absolviert. Mit der Teilnahme an der FSAE Michigan sollte der erfolgreichsten Saison die Krone aufgesetzt werden - mit Erfolg! Wiederholter Erfolg im Engineering Design Die Testtage vor dem Bewerb gemeinsam mit MRacing, dem Partnerteam der University of Michigan, dem das Team noch einmal für die Gastfreundschaft und Unterstützung während des Aufenthalts in Michigan dankt, haben sich bezahlt gemacht. Das Auto konnte optimal eingestellt werden und so schlossen die Weasels das Scrutineering, die technische Abnahme vor den dynamischen Events, als erstes Team ab. Bevor es zu den Dynamics überging, standen mit dem Design, Businessplan und Cost Event aber noch die statischen Disziplinen am Programm. Auch beim fünften Bewerb in Folge konnte der jr15 wieder in das Design Finale einziehen und die Konstruktionsweise des Boliden den Judges ein weiteres Mal, gemeinsam mit zehn weiteren Teams, vorstellen. Die Weasels überzeugten erneut und erreichten schließlich den fantastischen zweiten Platz im Engineering Design und konnten den ersten Award entgegennehmen. Es sollte nicht der Einzige bleiben. Top-Resultate in den Dynamics Mit der viertbesten Zeit in der Disziplin Acceleration, dem Beschleunigungstest auf 75 Meter, dem dritten Rang im Skidpad, dem Fahren einer liegenden Acht, und dem vierten Platz im Autocross waren die Weichen für ein weiteres Top-Overallergebnis gestellt. Dieses war allerdings noch vom Abschneiden in der Königsdisziplin abhängig: dem 22 Kilometer langen Endurance. Als viertletztes Team starteten die Weasels in die 20 Runden mit einem Fahrerwechsel nach der Hälfte. Der Jubel war groß, als man schlussendlich auch hier mit dem dritten Rang einen Stockerlplatz holte.
Fünf Awards für die Weasels Nun stand gespanntes Warten am Plan, denn erst bei der Award Ceremony würden die Weasels erfahren, für welchen Rang es im Overall-Ranking gereicht hat und ob sich zu den Awards im Skidpad, Endurance und Design noch einer dazugesellt. Die Freude war riesengroß, als das Team von joanneum racing graz nicht nur den Pokal des Drittplatzierten Overall hochstemmen konnte, sondern auch mit dem FEV Powertrain Development Award ausgezeichnet wurde. Dieser Special Award wurde an drei Teams mit herausragenden Leistungen in der Powertrain-Entwicklung übergeben. Der erste Preis ging an die Weasels, die schlussendlich fünf Awards mit nach Hause nehmen konnten. Mit 838 Punkten mussten sich die Weasels am Ende nur zwei Teams geschlagen geben. Das Rennteam Uni Stuttgart belegte mit einer Topleistung über den gesamten Bewerb hinweg den ersten Rang, gefolgt von der TU Graz. Das Podium in Michigan ging somit an drei europäische Teams. Global Formula Racing (GFR) und MSU Racing Team landeten auf dem vierten und fünften Platz am Michigan International Speedway. Große Fußstapfen Mit diesem großartigen Erfolg verabschiedet sich der jr15 nach einer unglaublichen Erfolgssaison in den Ruhestand. Er kann auf viele Glanzmomente zurückblicken, darunter ein Overallsieg mit Punkterekord in Italien, drei 1. und zwei 2. Plätze im Engineering Design und zwei Overall-Drittplatzierungen in Hockenheim und Michigan. Die Verbesserung in der Weltrangliste von Platz 9 auf Platz 5 setzt der besten Saison in der Geschichte von joanneum racing graz die Krone auf. Doch wie lange wird sie das bleiben? Denn mit dem jr16 steht schon ein neuer Bolide aus dem Bau der Weasels am Start, der hochmotiviert ist und noch bessere Ergebnisse als sein Vorgänger einfahren will.

Formula Student Austria
Podium beim Heimspiel Bei Formula Student Austria in Spielberg stellte der jr16 zum ersten Mal in der Saison seine Power unter Beweis. joanneum racing graz erreichte am Redbullring den 3. Platz unter 21 Combustion Teams. Mit 23 Punkten Vorsprung auf die TU Graz waren die Weasels das erfolgreichste österreichische Team. Vom 1. bis 4. August fand Formula Student Austria statt. Es war der allererste Bewerb für den Rennboliden jr16 der FH JOANNEUM Graz. Nach monatelanger intensiver Arbeit startete das Team voller Motivation in die Saison. Am ersten Tag stand das Scrutineering am Programm. Dabei werden die Autos auf Herz und Nieren geprüft. Der jr16 schaffte es durch diesen technischen Check bereits am ersten Tag, gemeinsam mit Global Formula Racing und KA-Racing.
Der zweite Bewerbstag war ganz im Zeichen der statischen Disziplinen: Design-, Cost- und Businessplanpräsentation. joanneum racing graz konnte beim Design Event die kritischen Augen der Judges überzeugen und schaffte es zum sechsten Mal in Folge in die Designfinals, gemeinsam mit dem Rennteam Uni Stuttgart und dem TUfast Racing Team München. Auch das Cost Event und die Businessplanpräsentation verliefen erfolgreich für die Weasels. Das Spannendste kommt bekanntlich zum Schluss. Am 3. August fanden die dynamischen Disziplinen statt. Dabei konnte sich der jr16 erstmals direkt am Track mit den anderen Rennboliden messen. Und die Ergebnisse können sich durchaus sehen lassen. Mit einer Zeit von 00:05,007 Sekunden beendete der jr16 die Skid Pad-Fahrt. Die Weasels holten sich den 2. Platz bei Acceleration mit einer

unglaublichen Zeit von 00:04,086 Sekunden. Beim Autocross belegt der jr16 den 5. Platz. Die Königsdisziplin, Endurance, meisterte der Bolide mit einer Zeit von 24:49,963 Sekunden und holte sich somit den 6. Platz. Mit diesem fantastischen Saisonauftakt holte sich das Team rund um den jr16 den 3. Platz Overall. Die arbeitsreichen Tage und Nächte haben sich bezahlt gemacht. Nach einer ausgiebigen Siegesfeier gab es für die Weasels aber keine Verschnaufpause. In gewohnter Weaselmanier wurde gleich nach Formula Student Austria weiter herumgebastelt, um auch beim zweiten Bewerb der Saison, Formula Student Germany, das Beste aus dem jr16 herauszuholen. Formula Student Germany
Top 3 auch in Hockenheim Am legendären Hockenheimring konnten die Weasels das zweite Mal alles geben. Vom 9. bis 14. August 2016 waren sie zu Gast bei Formula Student Germany. Auch hier konnten sich die Weasels erneut einen Stockerlplatz sichern. Nur wenige Tage nach Formula Student Austria, ging es für die Weasels nach Hockenheim. 73 Combustion Teams aus aller Welt starteten dort mit ihren selbstkonstruierten Boliden. Die Weasels konnten an ihrem Erfolg von Formula Student Austria anknüpfen, wie die Topplatzierungen in den einzelnen Disziplinen zeigen. Vor allem in den Dynamics ließ der jr16 seine Konkurrenten teilweise weit hinter sich. Mit einer Zeit von knapp über vier Sekunden, holte sich joanneum racing graz den 3. Platz bei Acceleration. Auch beim Autocross sicherten sich die Weasels Bronze. Besonders stolz war das Team auf den 2. Platz beim Skid Pad, mit einer Spitzenzeit von 00:05,64 Sekunden. Aber auch die Ergebnisse der Static Events können sich sehen lassen. Das Team lieferte im
Cost Event und bei der Business Plan Presentation solide Leistungen ab. Ein 8. Platz im Engineering Design Event konnte die Weasels abschließend noch jubeln lassen. joanneum racing graz hat während des gesamten Bewerbes das Niveau stets sehr hoch gehalten. Das Motto der Weasels „Never stop pushing“ wurde von jedem einzelnen Teammitglied erfüllt und gelebt. Neben Campingplatzpartys am letzten Abend, wurde an den restlichen Abenden für die Statics gelernt und in der Box wurden die Nächte zu Tagen gemacht, um das Beste aus dem jr16 herauszuholen. Dieser Einsatz machte sich bezahlt. Die Weasels haben mit ihrem jr16 den 3. Platz Overall gewonnen und haben sich auch in Deutschland als bestes österreichisches Team erwiesen. Nach Formula Student Germany hatten die Weasels allen Grund zum Feiern. joanneum racing graz belegt zurzeit den 2. Platz in der offiziellen Weltrangliste von Formula Student. Diese Leistung spiegelt das Know-how und die Motivation jedes einzelnen Teammitglieds wieder. Videos und weitere Bilder von Formula Student Germany gibt es auf Facebook, Youtube und der Website.

Student Formula Japan
Erfolgreiche Reise nach Fernost Nicht wissend, was sie jenseits Europas erwarten würde, machten sich die Weasels Anfang September 2016 auf nach Fukuroi, Japan. Das erste Mal in der Teamgeschichte stand eine Teilnahme an Student Formula Japan im ECOPA-Stadion vom 6. bis 10. September 2016 auf dem Plan. Schon die Anreise war ein Abenteuer für sich, weil der jr16 natürlich auch nach Japan gebracht werden musste. Dank den großzügigen Support von AVL, ging der Transport reibungslos und rasch über die Bühne. Auch die Weasels selbst mussten weit reisen und machten es sich alle gemeinsam in einem Airbus bequem. 12 Stunden Flug später landete das Team wohlbehalten in Tokio, wo der erste Weg zur Partneruni Tokai University führte, wo die Transportkiste mit dem jr16 bereits wartete. Die Tage vor dem Bewerb waren geprägt von harter Arbeit, schlaflosen Nächten und unaufhörlichem Testen. Aber auch von neuen Freundschaften und einigen Kulturschocks, denn die Mitglieder des Tokai Formula Clubs standen den Weasels stets mit Rat und Tat zur Seite und wurden zu mehr als nur Konkurrenten. Das Team schätzt sich sehr glücklich, so gute Freunde auf der anderen Seite der Welt gefunden zu haben. Ohne ihre Hilfe, wäre die Reise nicht so reibungslos verlaufen und auch die Möglichkeiten, noch vor dem Bewerb zu testen, hätte es nicht gegeben. An dieser Stelle ein riesiges Dankeschön an unsere japanischen Freunde. Domo arigatou! どうも有難う!
Start machte das Team mit Skid Pad und einer Zeit von 10.792 sec, wobei hier die Gesamtzeit und nicht wie üblich der Mittelwert gemessen wurde. Gleich folgend mit einer Spitzenzeit von 4.128 sec wurde Acceleration beendet. Als Erster durch’s AutoX resultierte in der letzten Startposition beim Endurance am darauffolgenden Tag. Die Königsdisziplin im Bewerb meisterten die Weasels souverän und brachten den jr16 nach nur 1263 sec am schnellsten ins Ziel. Harte Arbeit und Topplatzierungen resultierten schließlich in einem 4. Platz Overall. Die Weasels hatten das Abenteuer ihres bisherigen Lebens gut hinter sich gebracht und dabei viel gelernt. Mit ganzen 10 Awards und vielen neuen Freunden im Gepäck, reisten die Weasels und der jr16 wieder zurück nach Österreich, wo sie sich vorerst zur Ruhe begeben haben.
Eine absolut solide Leistung lieferte das Team bei den Static Events ab. Alle Punkte und somit den 1. Platz machten die Weasels sowohl beim Engineering Design Event, als auch bei der Business Plan Presentation. Der Gewinn bei der Business Plan Presentation war der erste, seit den Anfängen in 2003. Im Cost Report Event ließen die Weasels leider viele Punkte liegen, was sich auch auf das Endresultat auswirkte. Aber aus Fehlern lernt man und das Team ist mehr als zufrieden mit den Resultaten. Unter der heißen Sonne Japans standen als nächstes die Dynamic Events am Plan. Unvorhersehbare Wetterbedingungen und große Hitze machten es den Weasels nicht leicht, doch auch hier konnten sie einwandfreie Ergebnisse liefern. Den

Fastest Weasel on Earth "Kontrolle, Weitblick, Entschlossenheit. Das sind die drei wesentlichen Eigenschaften, die ein moderner Rennfahrer haben muss. Geschwindigkeit ist ein Nebenprodukt, kommt vom schnellen Fahren. Immer vorausgesetzt, das Auto wird eins mit euch, und ihr werdet eins mit dem Auto." Schöner hätte Nicholas Cage in "Nur noch 60 Sekunden" nicht auf die kommende Herausforderung vorbereiten können. Bereits im Dezember begann die Suche nach neuen Fahrertalenten für den jr16. Satte 45 Bewerber meldeten sich für das Auswahlverfahren. Dieses erfolgte in mehreren Schritten. Ein Fahrer muss fahren können, also steckten die Weasels die Anwärter erst einmal in Gokarts. Nach einem beinharten Zeitfahren hieß es für 25 davon adieu. Die schnellsten 20 mussten in der zweiten Runde abermals ihre Schnelligkeit beweisen. Für acht von ihnen zerplatzte der Traum an der Stoppuhr. Das restliche Dutzend lud das Team zum persönlichen Gespräch ein. Rennfahrer für joanneum racing graz zu sein, ist kein Hobby. Es verlangt Einsatz, Motivation, Konzentration und vor allem enorm viel Zeit. Ergo prüfte das Team alle Kandidaten auf Herz und Nieren. Bist du bereit dich für die Weasels ins Zeug zu legen? Bist du bereit deine Freizeit für die Weasels zu opfern? Lediglich fünf fühlten sich der Herausforderung gewachsen. Zum Feiern ist es aber noch zu früh. Denn der letzte Test ist der härteste. Für die glücklichen Überlebenden der Vorauswahl beginnt nun ein dreiteiliges Training. In einem
ausgeklügelten Freeletics-Programm heizt Markus Rossegger den Kandidaten richtig ein. Eine Mischung aus Kraft-, Ausdauer- und Geschicklichkeitsübungen bereitet auf die Strapazen im Rennauto vor. Unter körperlicher Belastungen muss auch der Geist funktionieren. Das trainiert die Gruppe beispielsweise bei einer Partie Memory in Liegestützposition. Reaktionsübungen stehen ebenfalls an der Tagesordnung. Der zweite Teil findet im Auto statt. Es dauert lange, bis sich Fahrer und Auto aneinander gewöhnen. Unzählige Trainingsfahrten und Feedbackschleifen werden nötig sein, um das Optimum an Leistung aus beiden heraus zu kitzeln. Dabei spielt auch der passive dritte Teil eine große
Rolle. "Das Lernen am Auto," bezeichnet Markus Rossegger den Prozess. Stück für Stück müssen sich die Anwärter in den Rennfahreralltag einleben. Nach und nach wachsen der neue Fahrer und das Team zusammen, bis am Ende jeder Handgriff sitzt und die Abläufe automatisiert sind. Jeder Einzelne hat Benzin im Blut und das ganze Team ist voller Zuversicht, mit den schnellsten Weasels der Welt an den Start zu gehen.

Fastest Weasel on Earth „Control, vision, determination. These are the three fundamental components of the new generation racecar driver. Speed is a by-product, going fast. But remember, the car is you, you are the car.“ There could not have been a better preparation for the upcoming challenge, than this Nicholas Cage quote from „Gone in 60 seconds“. In December we started our search for new talented drivers for the jr16. A stunning 45 contestants answered the call. The selection process consists of several steps. First and foremost a driver has to drive, so we put them into gokarts. After an unforgiving time trial we had to say good bye to 25 attendants. The remaining 20 had to prove their velocity one more time in a second time trial. Another eight dreams came to a crushing end at the hand of our stopwatch. Thus a dozen candidates remained for a face-to-face interview. Being a race driver for joanneum racing graz is more than a hobby. Dedication, motivation, concentration and a hell of a lot of spare time are mandatory. So we really put them to the acid test. Are you ready to fully dedicate yourself to the weasels? Are you ready to sacrifice your entire time for the team? Only five stood up to the challenge presented. Still time for celebration has not come yet. Because the last test will be the hardest. Up next for the lucky survivors is the holy trinity of trainings. In part one Markus Rossegger has developed an intense freeletics program to push everybody to their physical limits. The combination of strength, stamina and dexterity exercises will prepa-
re for the requirements while driving a race car. Under physical endeavour the mind has to be focused too. One way to improve this is playing a few games of Memory while holding a planking position. As a round up reaction exercises are on the training agenda as well. Part two takes place in the car, of course. It is a matter of time until driver and car get used to each other. Numerous test drives and countless loops of feedback will be necessary to itch out the maximum performance of the two. Along part three plays a major role as well. Markus Rossegger describes the passive process as „Learning at the car“. Day after day the new driver has to feel into the teams everday life. Piece by piece the two components will grow together, until it is a perfect fit and all the routines are automatized.
Every single weasel has got a full tank of unleaded in their veins already, and it is with untainted confidence that we are looking forward to presenting the fastest weasel on the planet this season.

Student Formula Japan
A successful journey to the East Not knowing what to expect the Weasels made their way to Fukuroi, Japan at the beginning of September. For the first time in team history they participated in Student Formula Japan at the ECOPA stadium from 6th to 10th September 2016. The arrival itself was an adventure because the jr16 had to be sent to Japan as well. Thanks to the generous support from AVL the transportation went smoothly and fast. Also the Weasels had to take on the long journey and bundled off in an Airbus. 12 hours of flying later the team arrived safely at Tokyo and made their way to Tokai University, where the carrier box with the jr16 was already awaiting them. The days right before the event were embossed by hard work, sleepless nights and constant testing. But also by new friendships and several cultural shocks, because the team members of Tokai Formula Club were always there for the Weasels to help with the Japanese culture. joanneum racing graz is very happy to have such amazing friends on the other side of the world. Without their help the journey couldn’t have been so great and also the opportunity to do some testing wouldn’t have been there. A big thank you to all our Japanese friends. Domo arigatou! どうも有難う!

Right following Acceleration ended with a top time of 4.128 sec. 1st place in AutoX resulted in the last starting position at Endurance the next day. The Weasels mastered the supreme discipline very well and the jr16 rushed through the finish line after just 1263 sec and won the discipline. Hard work and top placements resulted in a solid 4th place Overall. The Weasels survived the adventure of their lifetime very well and learned a lot. With 10 awards and new friendships in their luggage the team and the jr16 made their way back home, where they are resting right now.
The team delivered very solid results at the Static Events. All points and therefore the 1st place was made at the Engineering Design Event and the Business Plan Presentation. Since 2003 the Weasels hadn’t won a Business Plan Presentation. At the Cost Report Event the team reclined a lot of points what influenced the end result. But one learns form mistakes and the team is more than satisfied with the outcome. Under the hot sun of Japan, the Dynamic Events were right around the corner. Formula Student Germany
Top 3 in Hockenheim The Weasels were able to show their strength once more at the legendary Hockenheimring. From 9th to 14th August 2016 Formula Student Germany took place there. The team made it to the podium once again. Only a few days after their success at Formula Student Austria, the Weasels were ready to rock Hockenheim. 73 Combustion Teams from all around the world came to Germany to prove the power of their self-constructed vehicles. The Weasels were able to build on their success at Formula Student Austria, which is proved by their great results during Formula Student Germany. The jr16 left its competitors behind, especially within the Dynamics. With a time of almost over 4 seconds, joanneum racing graz made the 3rd place at the Acceleration Event. Bronze went as well at the Autocross Event to the Weasels. The team was very proud about the 2. place at the Skid Pad Event, with a peak time of 00:05,64 seconds. The team could also show some good results in the Static Events. Solid results got delivered at
the Cost Event and the Business Plan Presentation. The 8th place at the Engineering Design Event was another reason to cheer. joanneum racing graz kept the level high during the whole competition. The motto of the Weasels DzNever stop pushingdz was satisfied by each team member. Instead of Campsite-Parties every night, the boys and girls studied for the Static Events. In the pit the nights were turned into days to extract the best out of the jr16. The laborious days and nights payed off. The Weasels won 3rd place Overall, therefore they were the best Austrian Team at Formula Student Germany. There was another reason to celebrate after Formula Student Germany. joanneum racing graz is currently the 2nd best team in the world ranking, right behind Uni Stuttgart. This great performance is caused by the know-how and the motivation of each team member. The jr16 started the racing season with its first victory, 3rd place overall at Formula Student Austria. The intensive days and nights full of hard work were finally paying off. The Weasels celebrated their success, but they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have any time to relax. Formula Student Germany was right around the corner and they kept working on the jr16 to push it to its best. A successful start At Formula Student Austria at Spielberg, the jr16 proved its power for the first time this season. joanneum racing graz made the 3rd place overall out of 21 Combustion Teams. The Weasels finished as the best Austrian Team with 23 points ahead of TU Graz. Formula Student Austria was held from 1st to 4th of August 2016. It has been the first competition for the racecar of the University of Applied Sciences Graz. Day one was all about the technical check. The jr16 got tested during scrutineering and passed as second together with the vehicles from Global Forula Racing and KA-Racing. On the second day of the competition the Static Events took place. Engineering Design, Business Plan Presentation and Cost Report were in the offing. joanneum racing
graz convinced the critical eyes of the judges and the team made it to the Design Finals for the 6th time in a row, together with Rennteam Uni Stuttgart and TUfast Racing Team Munich. We saved the best for last. The dynamic disciples started on 3rd of August. The jr16 was able to compete directly on track with the other racecars for the first time. The results speak for themselves. joanneum racing graz finished Skid Pad with a time of 00:05,007 seconds. With an amazing time of 00:04,086 seconds, the Weasels won the 2nd place at the Acceleration Event and landed on the 5th place at the Autocross Event. The Endurance Event is the most prestigious discipline where joanneum racing graz won the 6th place with a time of 24:49,963 seconds.

Grande Finale for our jr15 Before sending the jr15 into its well-deserved retirement, it went on a journey to Michigan and showed again what it means to be the most successful car in the history of joanneum racing graz. 120 cars of Formula Student - teams from all over the world participated in FSAE Michigan this year and competed against each other for the top rankings in the dynamic and static events. The competition took place from 11th to 14th of May 2016 at the Michigan International Speedway near Ann Arbor. Five European teams went on the trip across the pond to be part of the oldest official Formula Student - event. The journey began a little earlier for the Weasels, as the jr15 was safely packed and sent to the US about a month earlier in mid-April. A few days later the team members followed up and step by step the team and the car grew used to the competitive environment again. This was nothing new to them since the Weasels have already took part in four events in Germany, Austria, Hungary and Italy last year with the jr15. This last participation in Michigan should crown the most successful season of the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history - and it did! Repeated success in Engineering Design The testing days prior to the event together with MRacing, our partnerteam from the University of Michigan, which we would like to thank again for their hospitality and support during our stay in Michigan, did really pay off. The car was prepared perfectly and so we could pass scrutineering as the first team of the event. Before heading over to the Dynamics, the static events - Design, Businessplan and Cost Presentation - were scheduled. The jr15 made it for the fifth consecutive time in the fifth competition into the Design Finals, where the team presented their construction to the jury once again together with 10 other teams. The Weasels could convince once more and eventually reached the fantastic 2nd place in Engineering Design. The first award at this event - but it should not be the last one. Top-results in the Dynamics The Weasels ran in the fourth-best Acceleration time, reached the third place in Skidpad and came in fourth in Autocross. These top placings would set the course for a very good overall result but this would still depend on the outcome of the supreme discipline: The 22 kilometers long Endurance. The Weasels started as the fourth to last team into the race. The relief and joy after 20 rounds were huge - joanneum racing graz finished Endurance on the third place!
Five awards for the Weasels Then the Weasels waited curiously for the Award Ceremony, were the further results would be announced. The jubilation was of course great as they could accept the award for the third place overall alongside the awards for Skidpad, Endurance and Design. But there was also a fifth prize, joanneum racing graz could take home. The team was awarded the first of three FEV Powertrain Development Award for overall excellence in Powertrain Development. Only two teams beat the Weasels, which ended the event with 838 points. Rennteam Uni Stuttgart won overall after a great performance throughout the whole competition, followed by TU Graz Racing Team. So the podium in Michigan was taken by three European teams. Global Formula Racing (GFR) and MSU Racing Team came in fourth and fifth overall at Michigan International Speedway. Great Footsteps With this great success the jr15 bows out into retirement after an awesome season. It can look back on lots of great moments: an overall-victory in Italy, three 1st and two 2nd places in Engineering Design, two 3rd place overall in Hockenheim and Michigan and many more. The jump from the 9th to the 5th place in the world ranking after this performance in Michigan crowned the most successful season in the history of joanneum racing graz. But how long will this claim last? The jr16, the new topcar of the Weasel lair, is in the starting blocks and ready to beat the results of its predecessor.

This is what the 2016 season looked like During the summer of 2016, joanneum racing graz started in three formula student events. The summer started with the home race in Spielberg, closely followed by a trip to Germany. The season then ended with a bang, thanks to a trip to Japan, which will be a first for the team. By the way, in may the team has already done some racing this season, in Michigan.

FSAE Michigan One last time the jr15 proved its power. Thanks to the help of MRacing, a befriended team from the University of Michigan, it was a more than successful event. The Weasels brought home five awards with them.
Formula Student Germany, Hockenheim August 9 to August 14, 2016 The Hockenheim event in Germany is always one of the biggest Formula Student races in Europe, and joanneum racing graz has done well there in the past. Last year, the end result was a respectable third overall. But the opposition here in Germany was also very hard again, as there were 73 teams on the entry list for combustion engines. Those come from all over the world, and some of them were certainly a tough competition.
Of course joanneum racing graz returned to Spielberg in 2016, as it is basically the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s home race. At the Red Bull Ring in Styria the goal obviously was to show that they are the best Austrian team, but of course the overall victory on home turf is somewhat of a target as well. Last year they managed to finish fourth overall.
Formula Student Japan, Fukuroi September 6 to September 10, 2016 For joanneum racing graz, the journey to Japan was something completely new, but undoubtedly also something very special. A trip of this magnitude is not easy to manage, and there was a lot more behind it than just those four event days in September. But how often do you get such an opportunity? To travel around the world and participate in a race with your own racing team is clearly something special, and definitely ended up being absolutely unforgettable.

Welcome to our Family The latest member of the Weasel-family – the jr16 - was presented to the public on April, 15th. The Roll Out and the ÖH-Clubbing afterwards took place at the Audimax of FH JOANNEUM, University of Applied Sciences. More than 400 people - friends, relatives and racecar enthusiasts from all over Europe - came to Graz to join the exposure of the new car. The team prepared for this special evening for months. The event started with champange and baguettes, friendly sponsored by „Das Eggenberg“. Arrayed in red velvet the jr16 waited on stage for its big moment. Team member Verena Sophie Maier hosted the presentation. The special guests from the city of Graz and the University of Applied Sciences honored the team. The lecturers of the study course „Automotive Engineering“ were also very proud. After the presentation of the team members the big moment arrived. Teamleader Christian Rosenhammer and technical director Horst Emathinger had the honor to uncloak the jr16 under brawly applause. The jr16 quickly became the main attraction of the night. The car combines latest technical know-how with the passion of every single team member. At the following ÖH-Clubbing the team celebrated the big success. Students, family members and honored guests raised their glasses to the jr16 and a successful saison at Formula Student.

Engine test bench To cut a long matter short, it is the engine which makes the racing car of our team one of the fastest and best in the world of Formula Student. The enginetest bench is very important for the optimisation of the engines of our cars and data for the control units gets collected.
Toolroom Obviously, when it comes to the finishing of the racing car, the toolroom plays an important role. Carbon parts and surfaces get a special treatment in here and it is all about grinding and grinding again. This is the room where parts of the car get glued together and so the form gets visible for the first time. Especially in January, the Weasels spend much time in this small room, but the door always has to be closed. Everything is top secret: Details of the car and all the innovations for the new season.
MT-laboratory Briefly, in the mechatronics-laboratory or just MT-laboratory, the electricity is king. The whole electrical wiring harness gets planed and built in here. Not only the Weasels draw circuit boards and test, but also they evaluate the newest data from the testing.
Thank you to FH JOANNEUM The Weasels have a lot of space to work and to have a fling. That is not a matter of course. It wouldn not be possible to build a high performance racecar within this short amount of time, without the generosity of the University of Applied Sciences. Most of their time the team members spent in the CAD, the MT-laboratory and the new interns room. In those rooms they are working, building and consturcting but also laughing, dancing and living. The rooms are needed day and night, 24/7. Therefore a big thank you to FH JOANNEUM, the University of Applied Sciences. The Weasels are looking forward to many more years of great collaboration.

Weasels natural habitat Undoubtedly, we all want to know how the places, where joanneum racing graz makes the magic happen, look like. Where do the Weasels spent most of their spare time working on the next unique racing car? To say it quite bluntly: Where do the Weasels live? It is hardly surprising that the answers are the garage, the toolroom and Co. We are disposed to say that these places turned out to be their natural habitat.
CAD CAD â&#x20AC;&#x201C; that stands for Computer Aided Design. In their studio for construction the team of joanneum racing graz has to deal with questions of administration. Not only meetings take place in this room, but also learning sessions before tests. Right before Christmas, the Weasels spend most of their time in here.
Project room In the project room, many materials are waiting to be used in the racing car of joanneum racing graz. The high quality of these materials is an important part when it comes to the quality of the car. It is all about carbon and lightweight construction: The cassis and the airflow.
Garage It is not astonishing that the garage is the heart of the premises of joanneum racing graz â&#x20AC;&#x201C;this is the place, where the team puts together the pieces of the car. Likewise it deserves mentioning, that it is a warehouse for the previous racing cars, for parts of the car and materials of different kinds. Our Weasels spend hours and hours at this beloved place.
Machine room Many parts of the car get produced right in the machineroom of joanneum racing graz. Different parts for the car, turning parts as well as housing forms and adapter plates, come from this place, located next to the garage. Unnecessary to say that all the machines have a very high quality.

Editorial Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, The latest battle of the jr15 left behind some deep footprints for his successor, the jr16. As all the years before, the team around the jr16 started more than year ago with conceptualization and planning actions. All this was done in addition to the competitions preparation and the jr15 competitions itself, the most successful jr-racecar. As you can imagine we work in day- and nightshifts to exceed the jr15’s performance as we state with our motto: Never stop pushing! Due to some changes in the rules we had to sacrifice some manpower. We know that gaining knowledge means taking challenges, so we took them all. The jr16’s first success was the initial test drive before the RollOut. The jr16 was the first car since 10 years, which was able to drive before (!) the RollOut.
On April the 15th the jr16 was proudly presented in some kind of Weasel manner. In the name of the whole team of joanneum racing graz I would like to thank our young weasels and students from other department for their sacrificing support. This was the perfect way to gain knowledge and to enlarge the borders for this special project. Furthermore, I would like to thank all of our sponsors, manufacturers and suppliers who supported us during this season. Without their help we would not have been able to build up such a high and state-of-the-art race car. For you, dear reader, I wish a lot of fun browsing and reading through the following pages full of texts and pictures of our awesome season.
