C O A C H E S

When the city of Boston was awarded the honor of hosting the1992 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Cross Country Championship, it was in need of a world-class facility. At that time, Franklin Park was selected to have a cross country specific course designed on its premises. Although a special 12.5 kilometer course was implemented for the competition, the park features courses ranging from 5-, 6-, 8-and-10-kilometer distances. Each layout typically includes variations of three major components, the stadium loop – a journey around the back of White Stadium - Bear Cage Hill - elevating and descending athletes to 99m (194ft.) - and the Wilderness, which crosses into the wooded area of the park and follows a twisting path through the trees.

The course sits on a partially-wooded 527-acre park in the Jamaica Plain and Roxbury neighborhoods of Boston. Although the park boasts other athletic facilities such as a golf course, tennis courts, baseball fields and basketball courts, it is the course designed primarily for international running competition that is utilized most often. In addition to hosting all Boston College home meets, the Boston Athletic Association, the NCAA and numerous organizations throughout New England all make use of the competitively beautiful course that is Franklin Park.

The park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, an American journalist and father of landscape architecture, in the 19th century and named for Bostonborn patriot Benjamin Franklin. It is the largest and final component of Boston’s famed Emerald Necklace – the 1,100-acres of parks linked by parkways and waterways in the city – developed by Olmstead. Two years prior to the parks formation, American transcendentalist Ralph Waldo Emerson lived on the grounds on what is now known as “Schoolmaster Hill”.

The Eagles opened the campaign with a 31 point win at the Boston College Invitational. Caroline King won the second race of her career in a personal record time of 17:14. Eight other Eagles followed suit, as sophomore Elizabeth Hynes, Krause, Kaitlyn Cooney, Elizabeth McGuirk, freshman Morgan Mueller, Jacqueline Pollack and Madeline Reed also started off the season with the best times of their careers. At the UMass Invitational a week later, sophomore Sarah Lord paced the BC crew to a second place finish with a personal record of her own. Behind Lord’s fourth place finish, seniors Siobhan Breagy and Jessica Driscoll delivered PRs of their own to place in sixth and ninth respectively. In all, seven Eagles – Mueller, Pollack, Alanna Poretta and Claire Smith turned in their quickest times.

HEAD COACH randy thomas 18th Year at Boston College

2010 REVIEW

2011 EAGLES

C O A C H E S

Randy Thomas is entering his 18th year as the program director of the women’s cross country and track and field teams at BC. He spent the previous 14 seasons as the director of both the men and women’s track and field programs. Thomas has been a part of the Boston College program for 22 years. His past and current successes speak for themselves as he has guided Eagle athletes to 43All-American awards over the past 18 years. The most recent All-American award under Thomas came this past cross country season when Caroline King finished in 30th place at nationals. The former world record holder has guided the women’s cross country squad to 13 NCAA Championships in the past 20 seasons. Additionally, Thomas has trained athletes who qualify individually for the national event. In 2006, Mallory Champa earned All-America awards for her 38th -place finish at the NCAAs. Other notable athletes, including Laurel Burdick, Maria Cicero and Jennifer Kramer all gained All-America status after placing in the top-ranks at their respective NCAA Championships. The 2001 women’s team defended their NCAA Region I team championship prior to finishing sixth in the national event. His team’s success on the cross-country trails led his peers at the United States Track and Field Association to honor him as the 2001 National Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year. In 2000, his women’s cross-country team captured the Big East Championship and went on to finish fourth in the NCAA meet. This placing represented the highest finish at a national championship for a Boston College women’s team in any sport in school history.

Thomas also helped bring the first national championship for women’s athletics to the Heights, coaching Shannon Smith to the 2001 NCAA Championship in the 3,000-meter run. Thomas has mentored student-athletes to 20 All-American nods in track and field since 1994. In 2008, Tiana Riel earned the honor for her 11th-place finish in the pentathlon at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Her 4,017 points was a personal best and second on BC’s top performance list. During the outdoor season, Kasey Hill placed seventh in the heptathlon at the 2008 outdoor NCAA Track and Field Competition in Des Moines, Iowa. Hill earned 5,666 points during her All-American performance which set a personal best and Boston College record. Overall, Thomas, who served exclusively as the schools cross country coach during the first seven years of his tenure, has produced a total of 49 All-America selections, three national junior champions and one PanAmerican Games gold medalist. Before accepting his current position, Thomas was an assistant cross country and track and field coach at Massachusetts, his alma mater. The firstever Division I All-American in UMass cross country and track and field history, Thomas was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1982. Thomas, who received his master’s degree in business administration from Boston University, resides in Medway, Mass., with his wife, Marcy, and their son, Ian, who currently runs on the BC track & field team.

John Buckley enters his 13th season as the throws and multi-events coach at Boston College. Since joining the program during the 1997-98 season, Buckley has coached a multitude of BC student-athletes to AllAmerican, ACC and Big East Conference honors, as well as recognition as ECAC and New England area champions. In the spring of 2010, Buckley led sophomore Kelsey Huckins to the discus titles in the New England and ECAC Championship Meets. Huckins would go on to reach the podium at the ACC Championship in the discus as well. Across all field events, Huckins has thrown for seven of the longest marks in Boston College history with Buckley’s guidance. During the 2007 indoor season, Buckley coached Kasey Hill to become the first woman field athlete from BC to earn All-American honors, doing so in the pentathlon with a school record 4,073 points and Tiana Riel to provisional qualifiers for the indoor pentathlon and outdoor heptathlon events. The Eagles duo returned to earn All-American accolades in 2008. This time Riel was recognized in the pentathlon and Hill set a school-record of 5,666 points to place seventh in the heptathlon. With Buckley’s mentoring, Riel and Hill each progressed the Boston College Pentathlon record and collectively four BC athletes have bettered the Eagles’ Heptathlon record: Christian Regan, Elizabeth Hassan, Riel and Hill. During his tenure, other BC records have gone by the wayside in the discus (Megan Kearney), hammer throw (Elizabeth MacDonald), shot put (Jessica Fazekas), javelin (Brighid Marquess), and high jump (Christina Regan). Buckley also coached BC’s last Men’s Conference Track Champion, Rubin Marin, who won the BIG EAST Championships High Jump competition during the 1999 indoor and outdoor season. A 1971 graduate of Kent State, Buckley received his master’s degree in education in 1978 from the University of Massachusetts. While at his alma mater, he competed in the pole vault, throws, and Decathlon. Buckley has earned four Level 11 certificates from the Unites States Track & Field Association with concentrations in the throws, jumps, sprints-hurdlesrelays, and the multi-events. He is a Level 11 certified instructor for the multievents and a Level 1 certified instructor.

Erin O’Reilly is in her eighth season as the assistant coach for the women’s cross country and track and field programs. In her time at the Heights, O’Reilly has coached a slew of Eagles to three Atlantic Coast Conference individual championships, a pair of Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) titles and numerous NCAA appearances. Under O’Reilly’s tutelage, Boston College phenomenon Caitlin Bailey competed in NCAA finals of the 800-meter. The back-to-back outdoor 800m ACC champion has qualified for the national meet seven times throughout her career as an Eagle; doing so as an NCAA Regional runner-up in 2010. At the regional meet, Bailey established the BC record at said distance with a time of 2:03.45. O’Reilly also guided Bailey to the indoor 800m record (2:04.66) in 2009 and the third fastest 1500-meter time in school history (4:21.53) in 2010. Additionally, O’Reilly was instrumental in helping the 2010 distance medley relay team to an 11th place finish in the country. The 2009 season saw another of O’Reilly’s protégés, Anna Cioffredi, become the first freshman from Boston College to place the finals of the 400-meter at the ACC Championship. In the final, Cioffredi clocked a 54.82 - the fastest time of any Eagle in 15 years and fourth best in school history. During O’Reilly’s tenure, other standouts have included Melissa Sherman – who became the first Eagle to win the BIG EAST championship in and qualify for nationals in the outdoor 800-meter event in 2005 – and Kathleen Smyth – who captured the 1,000-meter crown at the 2005 ECAC meet. In 1994, O’Reilly began her collegiate coaching career as the graduate assistant for her alma mater, West Virginia University, before being promoted to assistant coach. From then until the time she left in 2002, the Mountaineers earned 22 All-American accolades, won 19 ECAC individual and relay championships and 13 All-Mid Atlantic Region honors on the track and on the course. In 1996, O’Reilly became the long sprints and middle distance head coach for the AAU Youth Track Program’s West Virginia Flyers. She trained two All-Americans for the 2000 USATF National Championships. A year later, O’Reilly was named the co-director of West Virginia University’s Cross Country Camp of Champions. From 1993 to 1998, O’Reilly also held the position of post-collegiate Olympic Trials Coach. She was responsible for the training regimen and evaluation of Trials athletes. In addition to daily coaching, she was charged with the tasks of finance management for the program and recruiting. Throughout that time period, O’Reilly was also a member of the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Rankings Committee. O’Reilly earned a B.S. in Physical Education from West Virginia in 1993 and returned to complete a Master of Science in Athletic Coaching in 2001. A former student-athlete, O’Reilly built an impressive resume in her time as a Mountaineer. After working her way to be named captain of the cross country and track and field programs in her final season, she went on to become the Atlantic 10 champion in the mile and 3,000-meter competitions – simultaneously establishing conference records in each event. As early as her sophomore year, O’Reilly was an NCAA Provisional Qualifier in the 3,000-meter and had won the 1,000-meter title at the ECAC meet. By the end of her collegiate career, she held seven school records in cross country and track.

Maria Cicero burst onto the college scene with All-American performances on the course and around the track her freshman campaign. After collecting her first national honor in the fall, Cicero narrowly missed taking home another award in the 5,000m indoor season, but went on to capture her second of the year with a fifth place in the 10,000m at the NCAA Outdoor Championship. That same year, she broke two of Michelle Hallett’s school records – the mile and 10,000m - which had stood for over 16 years and was an All-Big East member in the 5,000m. An injury would hamper the middle portion of her tenure at BC, but Cicero rebounded to make the All-Conference team with a ninth place finish at the Big East Cross Country Championship and be crowned the Big East 10,000m champion. time (9:20.49) in school history in her final season.

Maria Cicero

As a freshman, Cate Guiney qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championship out of District-I, but not before collecting the first of three All-Big East honors with a sixth place finish (17:12) at the conference meet. The indoor season saw Guiney claim the 3,000-meter New England Championship and when outdoor came around, she took the New England 5,000-meter title (17:05.00) as well. Capping her first year as an Eagle, she anchored the Distance Medley Relay Team that broke a 16-year old school record by 12 seconds in 11:37.70. The 2000 cross country season saw Guiney led BC to Big East and District-I Championships en route to its best finish at the NCAA Championship in program history 4th place on 214 points. A 34th place showing at the national meet rewarded her with an All-American accolade. After being tabbed All-Big East in the 3,000-and 5,000-meters in track, Guiney returned the following season on grass to lead the Eagles to a second place finish in the Big East, setting a VanCordlandt Park course record (20:04) as conference champion. An injury forced Guiney to miss the NCAA Qualifying meet, but the Eagles repeated as District-I Champions and she was named 2001 Northeast Runner of the Year. After BC, Guiney began competing for the New York Athletic Club (NYAC), finishing as the 25th American female (55th overall) at the 2004 NYC Marathon and 24th at the 2009 USATFCC Championship.

On the track, Guiney was also a national qualifier in the 5,000-meters for the 2001 indoor season. At the time of her graduation, her 16:29.00 in the 5,000-meters ranked second on BC’s all-time records list. With her mercurial speed and exceptional endurance Angie Graham earned nine All-American accolades while at Boston College. On the cross country path, she qualified for the NCAA Championship in three consecutive years from 1995-97. Her third place finish at the ’96 NCAA Cross Country Championship remains as the highest by any Boston College student-athlete at the meet. It was at that competition Graham became the first Eagle to earn All-American status in cross country and the first runner to do so in back-to-back years with an encore in 1997. Had Graham worn the Maroon and Gold any longer, she may have expanded her grasp on the BC record books. At the time of her graduation in 1998, Graham held seven track records: the indoor 1000-meter (2:46.47), 1500-meters (4:19.4), mile (4:37.52), 3000-meter (9:20.58) and distance medley relay (4:36 mile anchor leg); and in the outdoor 1500-meters (4:15.89), 3000-meters (9:14.39) and 3200-meter relay (8:53.79). She was the winner of the Nathaniel J. Hasenfus “Eagle of the Year” Award for her graduating class.

Jennifer Kramer 2003 • Cross Country 2004 • Outdoor 5,000m As a freshman, Jennifer Kramer collected All-Big East honors as the 15th overall finisher in cross country and was a conference champion in the 3,200-Meter Relay. She continued to produce on the cross country trails, racking up back-to-back All-Northeast Region accolades in 2002 and 2003, as the 17th and 7th best runner respectively. In her final season on the cross country trails, Kramer took fourth at the Big East Championship in a time of 20:48.0. As the only Eagle to qualify for the 2003 NCAA Cross Country Championship, Kramer returned as an All-American after placing 34th. On the track, she had run the third fastest 1,500-meter time in school history (4:23.56) during the outdoor season earlier that year. When the 2004 indoor campaign started up, she busted out another BC record time in the 3,000-meter event a time of 9:35.35. Kramer carried the momentum to the spring season, capping her collegiate career with a 16:40.26 in the 5,000-meter run to achieve All-American status.

hall of fame/EAGLE OF THE YEAR Cross Country/Track & Field Hall of Fame Members

Eagle of the Year Award

The Varsity Club founded the Boston College Hall of Fame in 1970 to commemorate the achievements of the finest student-athletes to ever wear Maroon and Gold. Since that time, over 400 Eagles have been inducted into the prestigious club. As of 2010, the Cross Country/Track and Field programs were represented by 51 members – fourth most of any program.

The Boston College Varsity Club annually presents The Nathaniel J. Hasenfus ‘22 Eagle of the Year Award. Since 1977, the award has given each year to the outstanding male and female athletes in the graduating class who are outstanding citizens, leaders, scholars and athletes. Each recipient receives a bronze eagle on an inscribed mahogany base. The prestigious awards are named in honor of Dr. Nathaniel J. Hasenfus, the late beloved historian of Boston College Athletics and former president of the Varsity Club.

ers in need, whether in Boston or Belize. Each year, more than 5,000 undergraduates give some 375,000 hours of community service in the Boston area, while more than 650 students trade vacation for service during Spring Break. Nearly 2,000 students take part in retreats and spiritual formation activities annually.

Today, the Boston College motto “ever to excel” also extends to a broad array of extracurricular activities and opportunities ranging from sports to the arts. Athletics is integral to the University’s focus on the development of the whole person in body as well as in mind and spirit. BC offers 31 men’s and women’s varsity sports, all of which compete at the NCAA Division I level, and annually has one of the highest graduation rates in Division IA.

After more than a century of growth and evolution, Boston College holds fast to the ideals that inspired its Jesuit founders. The University today remains focused on its mission of helping students to develop their minds and talents while providing them with the motivation and compassion to use those talents in the service of others. “Deeply rooted in its Catholic and Jesuit origins, Boston College offers an education that is distinctive in spirit and content, that is doubly rich with the best of human thought and with the profound insights of faith,” writes Reverend William P. Leahy, SJ, who assumed the presidency of Boston College in 1996. “We believe that Boston College provides a transforming experience for young men and women.”

BC offers a wide variety of resources that enrich intellectual and cultural life beyond the campus gates. Among these are the Jesuit Institute; Center for Ignatian Spirituality; Center for Catholic Education; Church in the 21st Century Center; Boisi Center for Religion and American Public Life; Center for Human Rights and International Justice; Center for ChristianJewish Learning; Winston Center for Leadership and Ethics; Center on Wealth and Philanthropy; Center for Retirement Research; Sloan Center on Aging and Work; Center for the Study of Testing, Evaluation and Educational Policy; TIMSS and PIRLS International Study Center; Center for International Higher Education; Burns Library of Rare Books and Special Collections; Robsham Theater Arts Center; McMullen Museum of Art; Center for Child, Family and Community Partnerships; Center for Corporate Citizenship; Center for Work and Family; Center for Irish Programs; Urban Ecology Institute and Weston Observatory.

A continued expression of this philosophy, based on the Jesuit principle of cura personalis, or care for the individual, is the faculty’s dedication to teaching. BC faculty members have been honored for their teaching by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Education, while the University’s overall commitment to teaching has been ranked among the nation’s top 20, also by US News & World Report.

A Boston College education focuses not only on intellectual development, but also on personal, spiritual and physical development. Students are asked to use their abilities, education and acquired skills to help oth2011 WOMEN’S TRACK & field/cross couNTry MEDIA GUIDE

WILLIAM P. LEAHY, S.J.

Father Leahy joined the department of history at Marquette University in 1985 and became a tenured associate professor there six years later. In July 1991, he was named executive vice president at Marquette, where he served until being named president of Boston College in 1996.

HIS TORY

During his years at Boston College, Father Leahy has presided over an institution that has solidified its position among the nation’s best and

most selective national universities. Since 1996, BC’s endowment, sponsored research grants and student financial aid have doubled, and the percentage of student applicants accepted has fallen from 41 percent to 27 percent, while SAT scores have risen by more than 130 points. In addition, 100 full-time faculty members have been added, minority student enrollment in undergraduate programs has climbed from 18 percent to 26 percent and annual cash gifts to the University have increased from $24 million to $95 million. During his presidency, undergraduate applications to Boston College have grown from 16,500 to 30,000, making BC the fifth most- applied to private university in the United States. Currently, the University enrolls students from all 50 states and 80 countries, and its undergraduates have earned more than 250 prestigious fellowships, including two Rhodes Scholarships. Student-athletes at BC succeed in balancing the demands of academics and athletics, and BC consistently ranks among those universities with the highest NCAA graduation rates. Most recently, the Boston College community has been engaged in a comprehensive assessment and planning effort that resulted in a 10-year Strategic Plan. This plan will build on Boston College’s strengths and accomplishments of the past and will focus additional resources on undergraduate liberal arts education and formation, as well as integrated science research and teaching. The University also intends to increasingly apply the strengths of its professional schools to resolving critical societal issues, and foster even more international links. In addition, Boston College intends to remain faithful to its Jesuit, Catholic heritage and to become the leading Catholic university and theological center in the world.

Since Gene DeFilippo became Director of Athletics in September of 1997, he has led the BC athletics program to an unprecedented period of innovation, growth, fundraising, athletic and academic success. He also led the program through one of the most significant periods in its history as it transitioned to full membership in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Under DeFilippo’s leadership, Boston College student-athletes’ achievements in the classroom have become an immense source of pride for the University and its supporters. Twenty-one Boston College sports teams received a perfect Graduation Success Rate score of 100, according to data released by the NCAA last November. That figure represents the most teams with a perfect 100 score of any Division I intercollegiate athletics program in the country. Last year, 379 BC student-athletes maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or better, earning the Athletic Director’s Award for Academic Excellence. BC’s graduation rate for all student-athletes has consistently ranked in the nation’s top ten. DeFilippo initiated an impressive overhaul of BC’s athletics facilities that includes new football practice facilities, a total renovation of Conte Forum, including a new sound system, floor and video boards, new soccer, field hockey and lacrosse facilities on the Newton campus, new Field Turf for Alumni Stadium, and an air-inflated bubble to cover the stadium turf to provide an indoor practice facility for all sports during the winter months. DeFilippo was instrumental in raising money to build the privately funded $27 million, 72,000-squarefoot Yawkey Athletics Center, which houses the football program, the Office of Learning Resources for Student-Athletes, and a large function area for general use. After football moved into the Yawkey Center, BC undertook a multi-million dollar renovation Conte Forum to provide additional locker room and office space for many of BC’s 31 varsity sports.

DeFilippo renamed the Athletics Association’s fundraising arm (formerly Blue Chips) in honor of longtime Athletics Director Bill Flynn. Alumni, parents and friends of Boston College contributed more than $27 million during the past year (this total includes an extraordinary payment towards a capital project). The 4,600 donors to the Flynn Fund prove that there is strength in numbers; nearly 700 alumni, parents and friends have given to BC Athletics for at least 10 consecutive years. Anne and Gene DeFilippo cemented their commitment to Boston College by announcing their pledge of $100,000 to endow a scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a female student-athlete who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement and financial need. In athletics competition, DeFilippo has overseen some of the most successful seasons in Boston College Athletics history. During the 2009-10 season, the football team appeared in a school-record 11th consecutive bowl game and the men’s ice hockey team captured its fourth national championship (its third since 2001). In 2008, the men’s soccer team captured both the ACC regular-season and tournament championships and entered the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament as the overall No. 1 seed.

However, in today’s intercollegiate athletics, competition has become so balanced and so competitive that it is virtually impossible to maintain a high level of consistency.

Yet the Atlantic Coast Conference has defied the odds. Now in its 57th year of competition, the ACC has long enjoyed the reputation as one of the strongest and most competitive intercollegiate conferences in the nation. And that is not mere conjecture, the numbers support it. Since the league’s inception in 1953, ACC schools have captured 105 national championships, including 56 in women’s competition and 49 in men’s. In addition, NCAA individual titles have gone to ACC student-athletes 139 times in men’s competition and 86 times in women’s action.
