Katie Molumphy McNamara returns for her 10th season as assistant coach of the Boston College women’s tennis team.

Cynthia Tow enters her fourth season as an assistant coach for the Boston College women’s tennis team.

A member of BC’s class of 1987, McNamara was the first player to attend Boston College on a tennis scholarship. During her tenure as a student-athlete, she led the Eagles to three BIG EAST championships and was the first BC individual to qualify for the NCAA Championships.

Tow is a 2001 graduate of Boston College and one of the most successful players in the BC history. During her time in Chestnut Hill, Tow racked up 125 singles wins – most on No. 1 singles – and lead the team in wins all four years. She attained an ITA ranking as high as No. 66 and collected several singles titles while at BC; including the Brown, Harvard and Princeton Invitational.

During that span, McNamara racked up more than 100 singles wins, including an astounding 50-2 record in BIG EAST competition. In recognition of her efforts and her accomplishments, the conference named her the BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Decade for tennis and in 1992 she was inducted into the BC Varsity Club Hall of Fame. Prior to her return to the Heights, McNamara was the head professional at the Belmont Hill Club from 1996-1999, where she rejuvenated the club’s junior and ladies tennis programs. She also coached four of New England’s top junior tennis players, as well as 100 other aspiring youths. McNamara made the transition to Belmont Hill after stints as an assistant coach at Harvard University from 1990-1993 and as the head coach at MIT during the 1995-96 season. McNamara continued her education at Boston College, earning a master’s in business administration in 1994. She currently is an accounting manager at the Belmont Hill School. Katie is married to John McNamara – a former BC hockey star. The couple has four children - Kevin, Jack, Michael and Joseph.

Following her graduation from BC, Tow competed on the Professional Women’s Tennis Tour against a world-wide field from May 2001 to August 2002, earning a world ranking. In January of 2002, Tow began her coaching career at Wellesley College as an assistant coach where she helped guide the women’s team to a 10-1 record and an NCAA birth. Prior to her time at Wellesley, she served as the tennis professional at the Boston Sports Club in Newton, Mass., where she has taught private and group lessons to students of all ages and levels. Additionally, Tow served as the tennis coordinator at the Wellbridge Athletic Club, also in Newton, Mass., where she coordinated weekly round robins and provided administrative support. A cum laude graduate, Tow earned a Juris Doctor degree from Northeastern University School of Law in May of 2005 and was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in December of 2005. She has worked as a legal intern, judicial intern, law clerk and associate at firms and courthouses in Massachusetts over the past several years. Tow currently works at Northeastern University School of Law as the Recruitment Coordinator. She resides in Brookline, Mass.

EAGLES 2010-11 Women’s Tennis Media Guide

2010-11 outlook Looking Back

Heading into the 2009-10 season, the Eagles had lost their top two players to graduation and returned only four letter-winners. A trying schedule pitted Boston College against 15 nationally ranked teams, including a five-match stretch versus Top-20 programs, leaving BC with a 6-16 record. The lone ACC win came on the road in a 5-2 defeat of Maryland on Feb. 13. The Eagles concluded the year slotted as the sixth-best team in the Northeast Region and then-freshman Alex Kelleher garnered a final regional ranking of No. 14.

Looking Ahead

For the 2010-11 campaign, three new faces join the Eagles roster, which showcases seven letter-winners from the previous season. Junior transfer Erina Kikuchi (New York, N.Y.) and freshmen Veronica Corning (Beverly, Mass.) and Haley Dixon (Temecula, Calif.) all competed for Boston College this past fall. Additionally, BC received a National Letter of Intent from Jessica Wacnik (Oakland, Ill.) in November to play for the Eagles beginning in 2011.

Fall 2010

Boston College began the fall season at the Brown Invitational, where collectively the team compiled a record of 18-14. Senior Katharine Attwell and Dixon won the Flight B doubles draw, while Kelleher and Corning played in the Finals of the Flight A doubles draw. The Eagles then traveled to Flushing Meadows, N.Y. to compete in the USTA Tournament over Columbus Day weekend. Sophomores Ina Kauppila and Olga Khmylev, as well as Attwell brought home individual titles and the pairing of Kelleher and Kikuchi claimed a doubles draw to lead BC to a record of 28-7. BC qualified the maximum allotment of players – 6 singles and 3 doubles teams – for the ITA Northeast Regional two weeks later. In both draws, four Eagles reached the Round of 16. Kikuchi led the way with a 4-1 singles record and went 2-1 in doubles. The final tournament of Autumn session brought Boston College to the Big Green Invite in Hanover, N.H. Khmylev and Dixon went undefeated in their respective singles flights, as well as a doubles pairing, to each earn a pair of crowns. Junior Katarina Gajic and Kauppila unsuccessfully contested in the finals in their singles draws, but were triumphant on the doubles court for a title of their own.

Returning

Senior Katharine Attwell has been named the captain for the 2010-11 season. Over the fall session, she posted a career-best record of 145, which was highlighted by winning Flight D at the USTA Billy Jean King NTC Women’s College Invitational. Fellow upperclassmen include senior Jacqueline Mabatah and junior Katarina Gajic. Mabatah mostly competed on the doubles court, while Gajic saw the majority of her singles plays on the second and third courts. The two Eagles competed in nine matches as a doubles pairing last season. A deep sophomore class – consisting of Ina Kauppila, Alex Kelleher, Olga Khmylev and Elizabeth Workman - also returns for the spring.

Khmylev competed for BC on courts one through five last year, totaling a 4-15 record. This fall she delivered a cumulative record of 17-5, boasting a stellar 11-1 record in singles play. Workman’s appearances were limited due to an injury, but she looks to have a bigger impact this spring.

Newcomers

Erina Kikuchi joins the Eagles for her first season from Kingsborough College. Kikuchi was a two-time All-American and the 2009 National Junior College Athletic Association national champion at Kingsborough. Prior to her collegiate career, she competed in the U.S. Open Junior Qualifying Tournament in 2006 and won the U-14 All-Japan Juniors Tournament in 2002. The New York, N.Y. native tallied a 14-7 record this fall, including winning the Flight B doubles title at the USTA Billy Jean King NTC Women’s College Invitational. Veronica Corning comes to the Heights from Hamilton, Mass. Throughout her career at Pingree School, she did not surrender a single set. Corning was named the EIL Most Valuable Player for three consecutive years (2008-10) and named to the Boston Globe All-Scholastics Teams over the same time period. Tennis Recruiting Network (TRN) ranked her as the No. 24 recruit in the country and No. 2 in New England. At the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional this fall, Corning reached the Round of 16 in the doubles draw and quarterfinals of the singles flight. She collected a 9-8 record, although three losses were due to injury withdrawals. Haley Dixon made the trip across country to Chestnut Hill from Temecula, Calif. Playing for Great Oak High School, she captured the Southwestern League singles title in 2006 and 2008. In 2007, she won the SWL doubles title in 2007 and reached the singles final of the California Interscholastic Federation. Before enrolling at Boston College, Dixon was ranked as high as No. 6, a five-star recruit (‘92s) and a blue-chip recruit (‘93s) by TRN. She turned in an impressive 15-5 record this fall, including a staggering 9-1 on the doubles court.

The Schedule

Boston College will once again play one of the most challenging schedules in the country this season. Seventeen - nearly threequarters - of the 2011 matchups the Eagles will square off against were ranked at the end of last year. Eleven of this year’s opponents competed in the NCAA Championship Team Tournament, highlighted by Sweet-16 appearances by conference rivals No. 3 North Carolina, No. 9 Duke, No. 10 Miami and No. 11 Clemson. With the Atlantic Coast Conference continually serving up the best competition in the country and 2011 will once again prove to be a challenging test for the Eagles. The out-of-conference schedule features several Ivy League schools, four of whom were nationally ranked last season. BC will look to assert itself in the Northeast with most of its regional competition taking place in the earlier part of the season. Boston College opens up the spring session at Yale (No. 46) on Jan. 22 and plays host to UMass on Jan. 30, and Maryland on Feb. 4.

Kauppila saw action on singles courts four, five and six in 2010 and was impressive this fall at 12-2 in singles play. Last season, Kelleher played 19 matches on court No. 1, compiling a 7-12 record and was ranked as No. 14 in the Northeast Region. She went 15-5 this fall.

president

William P. Leahy, S.J. became the 25th president of Boston College on July 31, 1996. Born in Omaha, he grew up on his family’s farm near Imogene, Iowa. After one year of college at Creighton University, he entered the Wisconsin Province of the Society of Jesus in 1967. He received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and a master’s degree in United States history from Saint Louis University in 1972 and 1975, respectively. Between 1975 and 1979, he studied theology at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, California, earning a master’s degree in divinity and a master’s degree in sacred theology while there. Ordained a priest in 1978, he completed doctoral studies in United States history at Stanford University in 1985. Father Leahy joined the department of history at Marquette University in 1985 and became a tenured associate professor there six years later. In July 1991, he was named executive vice president at Marquette, where he served until being named president of Boston College in 1996. During his years at Boston College, Father Leahy has presided over an institution that has solidified its position among the nation’s best and most selective national universities. Since 1996, BC’s endowment, sponsored research grants and student financial aid have doubled, and the percentage of student applicants accepted has fallen from 41 percent to 27 percent, while SAT scores have risen by more than 130 points. In addition, 100 full-time faculty members have been added,

minority student enrollment in undergraduate programs has climbed from 18 percent to 26 percent and annual cash gifts to the University have increased from $24 million to $95 million. During his presidency, undergraduate applications to Boston College have grown from 16,500 to 30,000, making BC the fifth most- applied to private university in the United States. Currently, the University enrolls students from all 50 states and 80 countries, and its undergraduates have earned more than 250 prestigious fellowships, including two Rhodes Scholarships. Student-athletes at BC succeed in balancing the demands of academics and athletics, and BC consistently ranks among those universities with the highest NCAA graduation rates. Most recently, the Boston College community has been engaged in a comprehensive assessment and planning effort that resulted in a 10-year Strategic Plan. This plan will build on Boston College’s strengths and accomplishments of the past and will focus additional resources on undergraduate liberal arts education and formation, as well as integrated science research and teaching. The University also intends to increasingly apply the strengths of its professional schools to resolving critical societal issues, and foster even more international links. In addition, Boston College intends to remain faithful to its Jesuit, Catholic heritage and to become the leading Catholic university and theological center in the world.

d i r e c t o r o f at h l e t i c s DeFilippo was instrumental in raising money to build the privately funded $27 million, 72,000-square-foot Yawkey Athletics Center, which houses the football program, the Office of Learning Resources for StudentAthletes, and a large function area for general University use. After football moved into the Yawkey Center, BC undertook a multi-million dollar renovation Conte Forum to provide additional locker room and office space for many of BC’s 31 varsity sports. DeFilippo renamed the Athletics Association’s fundraising arm (formerly Blue Chips) in honor of longtime Athletics Director Bill Flynn. Alumni, parents and friends of Boston College contributed more than $27 million during the past year (this total includes an extraordinary payment towards a capital project). The 4,600 donors to the Flynn Fund prove that there is strength in numbers; nearly 700 alumni, parents and friends have given to BC Athletics for at least 10 consecutive years. Anne and Gene DeFilippo cemented their commitment to Boston College by announcing their pledge of $100,000 to endow a scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a female student-athlete who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement and financial need. In athletics competition, DeFilippo has overseen some of the most successful seasons in Boston College Athletics history. During the 200910 season, the football team appeared in a school-record 11th consecutive bowl game and the men’s ice hockey team captured its fourth national championship (its third since 2001). In 2008, the men’s soccer team captured both the ACC regular-season and tournament championships and entered the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament as the overall No. 1 seed. Since Gene DeFilippo became Director of Athletics in September of 1997, he has led the BC athletics program to an unprecedented period of innovation, growth, fundraising, athletic and academic success. He also led the program through one of the most significant periods in its history as it transitioned to full membership in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Under DeFilippo’s leadership, Boston College student-athletes’ achievements in the classroom have become an immense source of pride for the University and its supporters. Twenty-one Boston College sports teams received a perfect Graduation Success Rate score of 100, according to data released by the NCAA last November. That figure represents the most teams with a perfect 100 score of any Division I intercollegiate athletics program in the country. Last year, 379 BC student-athletes maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or better, earning the Athletic Director’s Award for Academic Excellence. BC’s graduation rate for all studentathletes has consistently ranked in the nation’s top ten. DeFilippo initiated an impressive overhaul of BC’s athletics facilities that includes new football practice facilities, a total renovation of Conte Forum, including a new sound system, floor and video boards, new soccer, field hockey and lacrosse facilities on the Newton campus, new Field Turf for Alumni Stadium, and an air-inflated bubble to cover the stadium turf to provide an indoor practice facility for all sports during the winter months.

25

From 1993-97, DeFilippo served as director of athletics at Villanova University. He served as Associate Director of Athletics at the University of Kentucky from 1987-93, Director of Athletics at the University of South Carolina-Spartanburg from 1984-87 and Director of Administrative Services at Vanderbilt University from 1983-84. His coaching experience includes three years as offensive backfield coach at Vanderbilt (1980-82), which included the 1982 Hall of Fame Bowl. From 1975-79, he was offensive coordinator at Youngstown State University, during which time the team won two consecutive Mid-Continent Conference championships, 1978-79. In 1973-74, he was graduate assistant football coach for the University of Tennessee, coaching in the 1973 Gator Bowl and 1974 Liberty Bowl. A 1973 graduate of Springfield College with a Bachelor of Science degree, DeFilippo earned three varsity letters as a quarterback in football during his undergraduate career. He received a master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Tennessee in 1974. DeFilippo and his wife, Anne, are the parents of three children – Christine Eldred (married to Matt Eldred), John and Mary.

Boston College

BOSTON COLLEGE Boston College was founded in 1863 by the Society of Jesus to serve the sons of Boston’s Irish immigrants. It was the first institution of higher education to be founded in the city of Boston. Today, it is one of the foremost universities in the nation, with a coeducational enrollment of 14,500 undergraduate and graduate students. Boston College has drawn students from all 50 states and more than 80 countries. Boston College has grown not just in size, but also in stature and diversity. Today, it is ranked among the top 34 national universities by US News & World Report. Its Graduate School of Social Work is listed among the nation’s top 15, also by US News, while the graduate programs of its Lynch School of Education are among the top 20 and its Connell School of Nursing and Law School are among the top 30. In addition, eight undergraduate programs of the Carroll School of Management placed among the top 10 in the nation according to BusinessWeek, with accounting placing first in its category. Boston College is among the nation’s most selective universities, with nearly 30,000 applications received for its 2,250-member Class of 2013, and is numbered among the top American private research universities. After more than a century of growth and evolution, Boston College holds fast to the ideals that inspired its Jesuit founders. The University today remains focused on its mission of helping students to develop their minds and talents while providing them with the motivation and compassion to use those talents in the service of others. “Deeply rooted in its Catholic and Jesuit origins, Boston College offers an education that is distinctive in spirit and content, that is doubly rich with the best of human thought and with the profound insights of faith,” writes Reverend William P. Leahy, SJ, who assumed the presidency of Boston College in 1996. “We believe that Boston College provides a transforming experience for young men and women.” A continued expression of this philosophy, based on the Jesuit principle of cura personalis, or care for the individual,

is the faculty’s dedication to teaching. BC faculty members have been honored for their teaching by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Education, while the University’s overall commitment to teaching has been ranked among the nation’s top 20, also by US News & World Report. A Boston College education focuses not only on intellectual development, but also on personal, spiritual and physical development. Students are asked to use their abilities, education and acquired skills to help others in need, whether in Boston or Belize. Each year, more than 5,000 undergraduates give some 375,000 hours of community service in the Boston area, while more than 650 students trade vacation for service during Spring Break. Nearly 2,000 students take part in retreats and spiritual formation activities annually. Today, the Boston College motto “ever to excel” also extends to a broad array of extracurricular activities and opportunities ranging from sports to the arts. Athletics is integral to the University’s focus on the development of the whole person in body as well as in mind and spirit. BC offers 31 men’s and women’s varsity sports, all of which compete at the NCAA Division I level, and annually has one of the highest graduation rates in Division IA. BC offers a wide variety of resources that enrich intellectual and cultural life beyond the campus gates. Among these are the Jesuit Institute; Center for Ignatian Spirituality; Center for Catholic Education; Church in the 21st Century Center; Boisi Center for Religion and American Public Life; Center for Human Rights and International Justice; Center for Christian-Jewish Learning; Winston Center for Leadership and Ethics; Center on Wealth and Philanthropy; Center for Retirement Research; Sloan Center on Aging and Work; Center for the Study of Testing, Evaluation and Educational Policy; TIMSS and PIRLS International Study Center; Center for International Higher Education; Burns Library of Rare Books and Special Collections; Robsham Theater Arts Center; McMullen Museum of Art; Center for Child, Family and Community Partnerships; Center for Corporate Citizenship; Center for Work and Family; Center for Irish Programs; Urban Ecology Institute and Weston Observatory.

T h e ACC

THE ACC atlantic coast conference

The Tradition

Consistency. It is the mark of true excellence in any endeavor. However, in today’s intercollegiate athletics, competition has become so balanced and so competitive that it is virtually impossible to maintain a high level of consistency. Yet the Atlantic Coast Conference has defied the odds. Now in its 57th year of competition, the ACC has long enjoyed the reputation as one of the strongest and most competitive intercollegiate conferences in the nation. And that is not mere conjecture, the numbers support it. Since the league’s inception in 1953, ACC schools have captured 105 national championships, including 56 in women’s competition and 49 in men’s. In addition, NCAA individual titles have gone to ACC student-athletes 139 times in men’s competition and 86 times in women’s action.

The Championships

The conference will conduct championship competition in 25 sports during the 2010-11 academic year - 12 for men and 13 for women. The first ACC championship was held in swimming on February 25, 1954. The conference did not conduct championships in cross country, wrestling or tennis during the first year. The 12 sports for men include football, cross country, soccer, basketball, swimming, indoor and outdoor track, wrestling, baseball, tennis, golf and lacrosse. Fencing, which was started in 1971, was discontinued in 1981. Women’s sports were initiated in 1977 with the first championship meet being held in tennis at Wake Forest University. Championships for women are currently conducted in cross country, volleyball, field hockey, soccer, basketball, swimming, indoor and outdoor track, tennis, golf, lacrosse, softball and rowing.

A History

he Atlantic Coast Conference was founded on May 8, 1953, at T the Sedgefield Inn near Greensboro, N.C., with seven charter members - Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest - drawing up the conference by-laws. The withdrawal of seven schools from the Southern Conference came early on the morning of May 8, 1953, during the Southern Conference’s annual spring meeting. On June 14, 1953, the seven members met in Raleigh, N.C., where a set of bylaws was adopted and the name became officially the Atlantic Coast Conference. Suggestions from fans for the name of the new conference appeared in the region’s newspapers prior to the meeting in Raleigh. Some of the names suggested were: Dixie, Mid South, Mid Atlantic, East Coast, Seaboard, Colonial, Tobacco, Blue-Gray, Piedmont, Southern Seven and the Shoreline. Duke’s Eddie Cameron recommended that the name of the conference be the Atlantic Coast Conference, and the motion was passed unanimously. The meeting concluded with each member institution assessed $200.00 to pay for conference expenses. On December 4, 1953, conference officials met again at Sedgefield and officially admitted the University of Virginia as the league’s eighth member. The first, and only, withdrawal of a school from the ACC came on June 30, 1971, when the University of South Carolina tendered its resignation. The ACC operated with seven members until April 3, 1978, when the Georgia Institute of Technology was admitted. The Atlanta school had withdrawn from the Southeastern Conference in January of 1964. The ACC expanded to nine members on July 1, 1991, with the addition of Florida State University. The conference expanded to 11 members on July 1, 2004, with the addition of the University of Miami and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. On October 17, 2003, Boston College accepted an invitation to become the league’s 12th member starting July 1, 2005.
