SCHOOL RECORD BRINGS WOMEN’S TRACK ITS FIRST-EVER TITLE

2012 WOMEN’S TENNIS

AT THE 117TH PENN RELAYS CARNIVAL Philadelphia – With a dramatic kick to the line, the Boston College 4x1500-meter relay contingent of Caitlin Bailey, Jillian King, Siobhan Breagy and Caroline King became the first-ever women’s track team from The Heights to win an event at the world renown Penn Relays, simultaneously setting a school record of 17:25.19 on Friday afternoon at the 117th annual carnival at Franklin Field. All-American Caroline King anchored the Eagles to the monumental feat in 4:12.20, running on the heels of Sheila Reid 2010 NCAA Cross Country champion and indoor 3,000 meter runner-up - over the final 600 meters, before over taking the Wildcat on the final turn and making up more than 20 meters over the final stretch to catch Georgetown’s Renee Tomlin in front of the tape. “Going into the race I felt really relaxed,” King stated. “I didn’t feel like we had any huge pressure on us. I could feel Sheila [Reid Villanova anchor] on my back and that really pushed me to go on. Sheila then went ahead with 600 to go and that really helped me because I would just focus on her back. That was just it. I kind of just went with 100 to go.” Richmond took control during the first leg, but Caitlin Bailey led off with a competitive 4:25.20 clip that put BC in fourth place at the first exchange. “This is my fifth year at Boston College and my third year at the Penn Relays,” Bailey began, “I came in knowing what to expect from being here before. This is the first time we’ve ever done a 4x1500 and I just had a lot of confidence for us, being a strong middistance school. That really made us feel that we were going to run well today.” Jillian King led the field’s surge in 4:18.80 as it chased down Richmond to draw even after the second leg and Siobhan Breagy kept BC in striking distance with a 4:29.00 clip on leg No. 3. The Hoyas anchor ran out front and headed into the final lap held about a 30 meter advantage. King and Reid kept pace into the final bend when the Eagle slung shot herself past her counterparts in signature fashion to capture the crown and break BC’s record by over 33 seconds. “Everyone ran absolutely perfectly,” head coach Randy Thomas said. “We are such a high right now. I’m extremely happy and proud this group of fine young women, not only for winning and being graceful and humble in victory, but to also have the experience of running in front of such a large and enthusiastic crowd here at the Penn Relays.” The Eagles will close out the Penn Relay with the 4x800 Championship of America, scheduled to go off on Saturday at 1:55 p.m.

TOP FIVE RESULTS 1. Boston College – 17:25.19 2. Georgetown – 17:25.65 3. Villanova – 17:28.12 4. Princeton – 17:50.45 5. Richmond – 17:58.28

R andy T homas Director Women’s Cross Country and Track and Field 19th Season

Overall, Thomas, who served exclusively as the schools cross country coach during the first seven years of his tenure, has produced a total of 50 All-America selections, three national junior champions and one Pan-American Games gold medalist. Before accepting his current position, Thomas was an assistant cross country and track and field coach at Massachusetts, his alma mater. The first-ever Division I All-American in UMass cross country and track and field history, Thomas was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1982.

Randy Thomas is entering his 19th year as the program director of the women’s cross country and track and field teams at Boston College. He spent the previous 15 seasons as the director of both the men’s and women’s track and field programs.

Thomas, who received his master’s degree in business administration from Boston University, resides in Medway, Mass., with his wife, Marcy. Their son Ian was a member of the cross country and track & field program before graduating in 2011.

HEAD COACH

Thomas has been a part of the Boston College program for 23 years. His past and current successes speak for themselves as he has guided Eagle athletes to 44 All-American awards over the past 19 years. The most recent All-American award under Thomas came in 2010-11, when Caroline King finished in 30th place at cross country nationals and took seventh at the indoor mile championship.

THOMAS’ ACCOMPLISHMENTS Honored by the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association as the Division I women’s coach of the year.

The 2010-11 seasons saw the Eagles win the New England Cross Country Championship, earn two All-ACC honors behind their lowest-ever conference point total, collect three All-Northeast Region accolades and return to the NCAA Cross Country Championship as a team. On the track, Thomas’ contingent became the first women’s squad from BC to win an event at the Penn Relay Carnival - the College Women’s 4xMile Championship of America. King captured an indoor (mile) and outdoor (800m) conference championship en route to competing in two national meets. Standouts Caitlin Bailey and Jillian King won the half mile crowns at the ECAC and New England Championships, respectively, and also advanced to the NCAA East Regional meet.

Named 2001 Track and Field Association National Cross Country Coach of the Year. Coached 2001 Boston College graduate Shannon Smith, who became the first female athlete in school history to win a national championship, claiming the indoor 3,000-meter race at the 2001 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. In addition to winning four Greater Boston Cross Country titles, the women’s cross country team has advanced to the NCAA Championship 13 times during his career (1991, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010).

The former world record holder has guided the women’s cross country squad to 13 NCAA Championship appearances in the past 20 seasons. Additionally, Thomas has trained athletes who qualify individually for the national event. In 2006, Mallory Champa earned All-America awards for her 38th -place finish at the NCAAs. Other notable athletes, including Laurel Burdick, Maria Cicero and Jennifer Kramer all gained All-America status after placing in the top-ranks at their respective NCAA Championships.

The men’s cross country squad captured the 1992 New England Cross Country Championship, as well as two Greater Boston titles. The 1996-97 men’s indoor track squad placed second out of 48 teams at the New England Championships. Three-time member (1977-79) of the United States’ National Cross Country team.

The 2001 women’s team defended their NCAA Region I team championship prior to finishing sixth in the national event. His team’s success on the cross-country trails led his peers at the United States Track and Field Association to honor him as the 2001 National Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year. In 2000, his women’s cross-country team captured the Big East Championship and went on to finish fourth in the NCAA meet. This placing represented the highest finish at a national championship for a Boston College women’s team in any sport in school history.

Two-time member (1978-79) of the United States’ National Track and Field team. Previous world-record holder in the 10-mile, 20-kilometer and 30-kilometer events. Previous American-record holder in the 15-kilometer, 10-mile, 20-kilometer, half marathon and 25-kilometer races.

Thomas also helped bring the first national championship for women’s athletics to the Heights, coaching Shannon Smith to the 2001 NCAA Championship in the 3,000-meter run.

Registered fifth-place finishes in the 1977 New York City and 1978 Boston Marathons. Earned a fifth-place showing at the 1978 Marathon World Championship in Fukuoka, Japan.

Thomas has mentored student-athletes to 20 All-American nods in track and field since 1994. In 2008, Tiana Riel earned the honor for her 11th-place finish in the pentathlon at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Her 4,017 points was a personal best and second on BC’s top performance list.

E rin O’R eilly

In 1994, O’Reilly began her collegiate coaching career as the graduate assistant for her alma mater, West Virginia University, before being promoted to assistant coach. From then until the time she left in 2002, the Mountaineers earned 22 All-American accolades, won 19 ECAC individual and relay championships and 13 All-Mid Atlantic Region honors on the track and on the course.

Assistant Coach Ninth Season

In 1996, O’Reilly became the long sprints and middle distance head coach for the AAU Youth Track Program’s West Virginia Flyers. There she trained two All-Americans for the 2000 USATF National Championships. A year later, O’Reilly was named the co-director of West Virginia University’s Cross Country Camp of Champions.

Erin O’Reilly is in the midst of her ninth season as the assistant coach for the Boston College women’s cross country and track and field programs. In her time at the Heights, O’Reilly has coached a slew of Eagles to three Atlantic Coast Conference individual championships, a pair of Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) titles and numerous NCAA appearances.

From 1993 to 1998, O’Reilly also held the position of postcollegiate Olympic Trials Coach. As such, she was responsible for the training regimen and evaluation of Trials athletes. In addition to daily coaching, she was charged with the tasks of finance management for the program and recruiting. Throughout that time period, O’Reilly was also a member of the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Rankings Committee. O’Reilly earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from West Virginia in 1993 and returned to complete a Master of Science in Athletic Coaching in 2001. A former student-athlete, O’Reilly built an impressive resume in her time as a Mountaineer. After working her way to be named captain of the cross country and track and field programs in her final season, she went on to become the Atlantic 10 champion in the mile and 3,000-meter competitions - simultaneously establishing conference records in each event. As early as her sophomore year, O’Reilly was an NCAA Provisional Qualifier in the 3,000-meter and had won the 1,000-meter title at the ECAC meet. By the end of her collegiate career, she held seven school records in cross country and track.

The 2009 season saw another of O’Reilly’s protégés, Anna Cioffredi, become the first freshman from Boston College to place the finals of the 400-meter at the ACC Championship. In the final, Cioffredi clocked a 54.82 - the fastest time of any Eagle in 15 years and fourth best in school history. During O’Reilly’s tenure, other standouts have included Melissa Sherman - who became the first Eagle to win the BIG EAST

Under O’Reilly’s tutelage, Boston College phenomenon Caitlin Bailey competed in NCAA finals of the 800-meter. The back-toback outdoor 800m ACC champion qualified for the national meet eight times throughout her career as an Eagle; doing so as an NCAA Regional runner-up in 2010. At the regional meet, Bailey established the BC record at said distance with a time of 2:03.45. O’Reilly also guided Bailey to the indoor 800m record (2:04.66) in 2009, the third fastest 1500-meter time in school history (4:21.53) in 2010 and a 2011 Outdoor ECAC Championship. Additionally, O’Reilly was instrumental in helping the 2010 distance medley relay team to an 11th place finish in the country.

2011 CROSS COUNTRY REVIEW

The Eagles opened the year at a weather torn Hanover Country Club, taking second on a shortened course, before traveling to Amherst, Mass. for the UMass Invitational. Jillian King opened her senior campaign by claiming the individual title, besting a field of 75 in 17:21.41 and leading BC to a team victory as five teammates delivered personal records. The first test for the Maroon and Gold came at the Paul Short Run, hosted by Lehigh University. In the presence of five other nationally ranked teams, junior Bridget Dahlberg emerged as the Eagles’ front runner and guided the squad to a ninth place showing in personal record fashion. Boston College then returned to Franklin Park to defend its New England Championship title. Dahlberg tied with graduate student Hope Krause for third place in 17:46, leading BC to its third team title in four years. The contest also saw freshman Liv Westphal come in one stride behind her teammates in 17:48 for fifth out of 269 competitors in her first collegiate race. 2011-12 WOmen’s Cross Country / Track & Field GAIL HARRIS

ANDREA MELTON

When Gail Harris ran a 2:05.04 in the 800-meters at the 1990 NCAA Indoor Championship, she simultaneously became the first Boston College Women’s Track & Field All-American and set a school record that would go untouched for 19 years. Harris’ was so quick that up until the mark it was broken in 2009, the next quickest time was more than three seconds slower and, as of 2010, her times in the 500-meter time (1:11.50) and outdoor 800-meter (2:04.09), also set that in 1990, remain as the standard for Eagles Track & Field.

Andrea Melton gained her only All-American accolade at the 1995 NCAA Outdoor Championship, where she established a school record of 13.61 in the 100m Hurdles. A noted hurdler, sprinter and jumper, Melton used her athleticism to break Boston College marks for the indoor 55-meter hurdles (7.95), long jump (6.60m) and distance medley relay (11:11.55), as well as the outdoor 100-meter hurdles (13.61), long jump (5.96m) and shuttle hurdle relay (60.07). As an Eagle, she won five New England individual titles in the outdoor 100-meter hurdles and the indoor 55-meter hurdles. Melton was named the 1996 Nathaniel J. Hasenfus “Eagle of the Year”.

A swift and versatile runner, Tiffany Young was a nationally-ranked sprinter in numerous indoor and outdoor events, ranging from the 100-meter to the 3200-meter relay. As an AllAmerican sprinter, she set school standards in the 100-meter (12.14 seconds) and 200-meter (23.97) outdoor events and the 200-meter (24.14) indoor competition, and was a member of Boston College’s record-setting indoor and outdoor 800-meter outdoor relay teams. Young went on to be named winner of the 1994 Nathaniel J. Hasenfus “Eagle of the Year” Award as the outstanding female athlete in her graduating class. All of Young’s records remain intact 16 years later.

On the cross country path, she qualified for the NCAA Championship in three consecutive years from 1995-97. Her third place finish at the ’96 NCAA Cross Country Championship remains as the highest by any Boston College student-athlete at the meet. It was at that competition Graham became the first Eagle to earn All-American status in cross country and the first runner to do so in back-to-back years with an encore in 1997. Had Graham worn the Maroon and Gold any longer, she may have expanded her grasp on the BC record books. At the time of her graduation in 1998, Graham held seven track records: the indoor 1000-meter (2:46.47), 1500-meters (4:19.4), mile (4:37.52), 3000-meter (9:20.58) and distance medley relay (4:36 mile anchor leg); and in the outdoor 1500-meters (4:15.89), 3000-meters (9:14.39) and 3200-meter relay (8:53.79). That same year, she broke two of Michelle Hallett’s school records – the mile and 10,000m - which had stood for over 16 years and was an All-Big East member in the 5,000m. An injury would hamper the middle portion of her tenure at BC, but Cicero rebounded to make the AllConference team with a ninth place finish at the Big East Cross Country Championship and be crowned the Big East 10,000m champion. BOSTON

COLLEGE

1947 and 1952. The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences first offered doctoral programs in 1952, followed by the graduate schools of Education, Nursing, Management, and Social Work. By 1970 all undergraduate programs had become coeducational, and today women make up more than half of the University’s enrollment. In 1974, Boston College acquired a 40-acre site, 1.5 miles from the Chestnut Hill Campus, that had been owned by Newton College of the Sacred Heart. The land is the present site of the Law School and of residence halls housing some 800 freshmen. Thirty years later, the University acquired 43 acres from the Boston Archdiocese on land adjoining the Lower Campus in Chestnut Hill. The Brighton Campus is now the site of the School of Theology and Ministry, which was formed in 2008, when the Weston Jesuit School of Theology re-affiliated with Boston College and was joined with the Institute of Religious Education and Pastoral Ministry.

Originally located on Harrison Avenue in Boston’s South End, the College outgrew its urban setting early in the 20th century and moved to the former Lawrence farm in then-rural Chestnut Hill, where ground was broken on June 19, 1909 for the construction of a central Recitation Building, later named Gasson Hall in honor of President Thomas I. Gasson, S.J., who led the relocation. The Recitation Building opened in March 1913. The three other buildings that still shape the core of the campus—St. Mary’s Hall, Devlin Hall, and Bapst Library— opened in 1917, 1924, and 1928, respectively. Though incorporated as a university from its beginning, Boston College did not begin to fill out the dimensions of its University charter until the 1920s, with the inauguration of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the Law School, and the Evening College, today the James A. Woods, S.J., College of Advancing Studies. The 1930s saw the introduction of the Graduate School of Social Work and the College of Business Administration—today the Wallace E. Carroll School of Management. The School of Nursing—named in honor of William F. Connell in 2003—and the School of Education— today named for Carolyn A. and Peter S. Lynch—followed in

In 2005, the Church in the 21st Century Initiative, which was founded in the midst of the sex abuse scandal as a catalyst and resource for engaging critical issues facing the Catholic Church, became a permanent center at Boston College. In October 2008, the University launched “Light the World: the 150th Anniversary Campaign for Boston College,” setting a goal of $1.5 billion to support a strategic plan that advances academic program development, faculty expansion and research, and endows undergraduate financial aid, student formation programs, capital projects, and efforts to advance Boston College as the leading global Catholic university.

BOSTON COLLEGE

Boston College was founded by the Society of Jesus in 1863 and, with 3 teachers and 22 students, opened its doors on September 5, 1864. Through its first seven decades, it remained a small undergraduate institution, serving the sons of the Irish working class, and teaching theology and philosophy, Greek and Latin classics, and English and modern languages.

PRESIDENT LEAHY

2011-12 WOmen’s Cross Country / Track & Field

William P. Leahy, S.J. became the 25th president of Boston College on July 31, 1996. Born in Omaha, he grew up on his family's farm near Imogene, Iowa. After one year of college at Creighton University, he entered the Wisconsin Province of the Society of Jesus in 1967. He received a bachelor's degree in philosophy and a master's degree in United States history from Saint Louis University in 1972 and 1975, respectively. Between 1975 and 1979, he studied theology at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, California, earning a master's degree in divinity and a master's degree in sacred theology while there. Ordained a priest in 1978, he completed doctoral studies in United States history at Stanford University in 1985. Father Leahy joined the department of history at Marquette University in 1985 and became a tenured associate professor there six years later. In July 1991, he was named executive vice president at Marquette, where he served until being named president of Boston College in 1996. During his years at Boston College, Father Leahy has presided over an institution that has solidified its position among the nation's best and most selective national universities. Since 1996, BC's endowment, sponsored research grants and student financial aid have doubled, and the percentage of student applicants accepted has fallen from 41 percent to 27 percent, while SAT scores have risen by more than 150 points. In addition, 100 full-time faculty members have been added, minority student enrollment in undergraduate programs has climbed from 18 percent to 27 percent and annual cash gifts to the University have increased from $24 million to $100 million. During his presidency, undergraduate applications to Boston College have grown from 16,500 to more than 33,000, making BC one of the 10 most- applied to private universities in the United States. Currently, the University enrolls students from all 50 states and 80 countries, and its undergraduates have earned more than 285 prestigious fellowships, including two Rhodes Scholarships. Student-athletes at BC succeed in balancing the demands of academics and athletics, and BC consistently ranks among those universities with the highest NCAA graduation rates. Most recently, the Boston College community has been engaged in a comprehensive assessment and planning effort that resulted in a 10-year Strategic Plan. This plan will build on Boston College's strengths and accomplishments of the past and will focus additional resources on undergraduate liberal arts education and formation, as well as integrated science research and teaching. The University also intends to increasingly apply the strengths of its professional schools to resolving critical societal issues, and foster even more international links. In addition, Boston College intends to remain faithful to its Jesuit, Catholic heritage and to become the leading Catholic university and theological center in the world.

DeFilippo was instrumental in raising money to build the privately funded $27 million, 72,000-square-foot Yawkey Athletics Center, which houses the football program, the Office of Learning Resources for Student-Athletes, and a large function area for general University use. After football moved into the Yawkey Center, BC undertook a multi-million dollar renovation Conte Forum to provide additional locker room and office space for many of BC’s 31 varsity sports.

GENE DEFILIPPO

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Under DeFilippo’s leadership, Boston College student-athletes’ achievements in the classroom have become an immense source of pride for the University and its supporters. Twenty-one Boston College sports teams received a perfect Graduation Success Rate score of 100, according to data released by the NCAA last November. That figure represents the most teams with a perfect 100 score of any Division I intercollegiate athletics program in the country for the second consecutive year. In addition, BC football – with a score of 90 – was one of only six FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) programs in the country to receive a score of 90 or better. In May, Boston College’s varsity sports teams scored big when the NCAA released its annual Academic Progress Rate report. The average APR score of the 28 BC teams that were counted was 989 - 19 points above the national average (970). Every BC team scored 960 or above, and six teams - men’s fencing, men’s golf, men’s skiing, women’s lacrosse, women’s skiing and women’s tennis - scored a perfect 1,000. Boston College’s football team scored a 971 - a full 25 points above the national average. The men’s basketball team scored a 972 - 27 points above the national average. “Boston College is, above all, an academic institution,” DeFilippo said. “We want to field competitive sports teams, and we want to win, which our teams do. But when we recruit student-athletes, we tell them they have an opportunity to receive a degree from one of the greatest universities in the country, and our mission is to ensure that they are successful. We are extremely proud of our student-athletes’ accomplishments in the classroom.”

Anne and Gene DeFilippo cemented their commitment to Boston College by announcing their pledge of $100,000 to endow a scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a female student-athlete who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement and financial need. In athletics competition, DeFilippo has overseen some of the most successful seasons in Boston College Athletics history. During the 2010-11 season, the football team appeared in a school-record 12th consecutive bowl game, the women’s soccer team advanced to its first Final Four and the women’s ice hockey team advanced to the Frozen Four. In 2010, the men’s ice hockey team captured its fourth national championship (its third since 2001). In 2008, the men’s soccer team captured both the ACC regular-season and tournament championships and entered the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament as the overall No. 1 seed. From 1993-97, DeFilippo served as director of athletics at Villanova University. He served as Associate Director of Athletics at the University of Kentucky from 1987-93, Director of Athletics at the University of South Carolina-Spartanburg from 1984-87 and Director of Administrative Services at Vanderbilt University from 1983-84. His coaching experience includes three years as offensive backfield coach at Vanderbilt (1980-82), which included the 1982 Hall of Fame Bowl. From 1975-79, he was offensive coordinator at Youngstown State University, during which time the team won two consecutive Mid-Continent Conference championships, 1978-79. In 1973-74, he was graduate assistant football coach for the University of Tennessee, coaching in the 1973 Gator Bowl and 1974 Liberty Bowl. A 1973 graduate of Springfield College with a Bachelor of Science degree, DeFilippo earned three varsity letters as a quarterback in football during his undergraduate career. He received a master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Tennessee in 1974.

Last year, 349 BC student-athletes maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or better, earning the Athletic Director’s Award for Academic Excellence. BC’s graduation rate for all student-athletes has consistently ranked in the nation’s top ten. NCSA Athletic Recruiting ranked Boston College 13th among NCAA Division I universities in its annual power rankings, which assess the combined academic and athletics standards of all NCAA athletic programs across the country.

He was recently named the 2010 recipient of the New England Prep School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Martin Williams Souders Award, presented annually to a graduate of a New England independent school who made a distinguished record in sports and who since made a distinguished record in life through his/her ideals, leaderships and accomplishments. Past recipients have included George H.W. Bush, Sargent Shriver, Michael Erizione, Dee Rowe, Bill Cleary, and former BC Athletics Director Bill Flynn.

DeFilippo has undertaken an impressive overhaul of BC’s athletics facilities that includes new football practice facilities, a total renovation of Conte Forum, including a new sound system, floor

DeFilippo and his wife, Anne, are the parents of three children – Christine Eldred (married to Matt Eldred), John and Mary and recently welcomed their first grandchild, Katherine Eldred.

Since Gene DeFilippo became Director of Athletics in September of 1997, he has led the BC athletics program to an unprecedented period of innovation, growth, fundraising, athletic and academic success. He also led the program through one of the most significant periods in its history as it transitioned to full membership in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

DeFilippo renamed the Athletics Association’s fundraising arm (formerly Blue Chips) in honor of longtime Athletics Director Bill Flynn. Alumni, parents and friends of Boston College contributed nearly $20 million during the past year including more than 40 commitments of $100,000 or more in support of intercollegiate athletics. During the Light the World Campaign, DeFilippo has led an athletics fundraising effort that has totaled more than $150 million.

When the city of Boston was awarded the honor of hosting the1992 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Cross Country Championship, it was in need of a world-class facility. At that time, Franklin Park was selected to have a cross country specific course designed on its premises. Although a special 12.5 kilometer course was implemented for the competition, the park features courses ranging from 5-, 6-, 8-and-10-kilometer distances. Each layout typically includes variations of three major components, the stadium loop – a journey around the back of White Stadium - Bear Cage Hill - elevating and descending athletes to 99m (194ft.) - and the Wilderness, which crosses into the wooded area of the park and follows a twisting path through the trees. The course sits on a partially-wooded 527-acre park in the Jamaica Plain and Roxbury neighborhoods of Boston. Although the park boasts other athletic facilities such as a golf course, tennis courts, baseball fields and basketball courts, it is the course designed primarily for international running competition that is utilized most often. In addition to serving as the hosting all Boston College home meets, the Boston Athletic Association, the NCAA and numerous organizations throughout New England all make use of the competitively beautiful course that is Franklin Park. The park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, an American journalist and father of landscape architecture, in the 19th century and named for Boston-born patriot Benjamin Franklin. It is the largest and final component of Boston’s famed Emerald Necklace – the 1,100-acres of parks linked by parkways and waterways in the city – developed by Olmstead. Two years prior to the parks formation, American transcendentalist Ralph Waldo Emerson lived on the grounds on what is now known as “Schoolmaster Hill”.

EVER TO EXCEL

Heather Garcia - SAMI Officer 2011-12 SAAC Representative

he story of Boston College began in 1534, when seven idealistic students at the University of Paris T met in a chapel in Montmartre and vowed their lives to the service of God and the well-being of their fellow men and women. They were the founders of the Society of Jesus – the Jesuits – an order of religious men who did not choose monastic life, but instead went out to encounter and transform the world, committed to “finding God in all things.” Missionaries, explorers, scientist, artists, diplomats, writers – the Jesuits worked wherever intelligence, talent and the needs of the Roman Catholic Church took them. And when they turned to education, they developed an approach that sought to integrate intellectual excellence and religious commitment, that was concerned with the character as well as mind, that valued knowledge, transcendent values, community and service to others. In the spirit of the Jesuit mission, Boston College student-athletes have a rare opportunity to translate the skills they hone in their choice of sport into a positive lasting impact in the community. Through the generosity of Michael and Matt Devlin and their establishment of the Katharine B. and Robert M. Devlin Student-Athletes for Education (S-AFE) and Leadership Development Program, student-athletes impact an even greater audience by reaching farther into the surrounding communities and truly helping those in need so that others too can reach great heights. The program honors the Devlin family’s commitment to service and enables student-athletes to develop in all facets of their collegiate experience. omprised of more than 60 Boston College student-athletes, the Student-Athlete Advisory C Committee became a vibrant part of the athletic department in 2003. In addition to the Devlin S-AFE programs, the Committee aims to carry on the Jesuit tradition of service to other via other outlets. The SAAC annually sponsors a First-Year Orientation for incoming student-athletes in conjunction with the annual “Welcome Back Picnic” for all returning student-athletes, as well as speakers of campus-wide interest. In 2006, the SAAC raised more than $500 to be donated the Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism, Inc. At the annual talent show in 2010, more than $3,000 was raised for the St. Bernard Project, which provides support to rebuilding areas devasted by Hurrican Katrina. The SAAC also offers student-athletes at Boston College the opportunity to review and offer input on Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) activities, policies and proposed legislation. The SAAC distributes two annual awards, the Richard “Mo” Maloney Award for Community Service, presented to the male and female student-athlete who has utilized their talents and abilities in service to others, and the Ignatian Service Award presented to the team whose spirit and action best exemplify the Jesuit principle of cura personalis (care for the individual). The chosen team has excelled in utilizing the combined talents, abilities and generous spirit of its members for the service of others.

DEVLIN S-AFE PROGRAMS STUDENT-ATHLETE SERVICE IMMERSION TRIP Over 60 percent of students participate in an immersion trip during their time at Boston College. An athlete led and coordinated program, the Student-Athlete Service Immersion Trip is the hallmark of the S-AFE Program. Previous missions have brought the Eagle to Poplarville, Miss. and New Orleans. HEAR (HELP EDUCATE THROUGH ATHLETIC RESPONSIBILITY) In conjuction with former BC baseball coach Mo Maloney, a of 8-to-12 student-athletes participate in a bi-monthly program in which they go to local schools and speak with students about life choices and sports. FRANCISCAN HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN At least once a month a group of students bring joy to the lives of children with visits to the Franciscan Hospital. The two sides often develop friendships and look forward to seeing each other every few weeks. FOOD FOR FAMILIES A monthly event in which a group of studentathletes organize and distribute monthly donations - more than 350 bags of groceries provided by the Greater Boston Food Bank to help hundreds of families in the area.

48

CLOTHING & CANNED FOOD DRIVES Multiple clothing and canned food drives are conducted throughout the year to see who can amass the most donations in relation to the percentage of their team. Drives benefit the Brighton Projects. BOSTON CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL A big event in which a large group of student-athletes visit the Children’s Hospital with cheerleaders and Baldwin to spend time with kids. PEN PAL PROGRAM SAAC assists the LRSA with the pen pal program, pairing student-athletes with children in the surrounding communities and hosting an annual picnic on campus for the two sides to meet one another in a fun-filled afternoon.
