INTERVIEW POLICIES

All interviews with Boston College women’s ice hockey players or coaches must be arranged through the media relations office. It is suggested that 48 hours notice be given for an interview request. The Media Relations Office will arrange an interview time that is mutually convenient for the student-athlete and media representative. Student-athletes are not to be called in their dormitory rooms, nor should they be contacted via cell phone, email, Facebook or other social media networks. Rather, players and coaches will return telephone calls to members of the media. Players will not be asked to miss classroom time for interviews.

PHOTOGRAPHERS

Photographers wishing to shoot an Eagles home game should contact the Media Relations Office directly at (617) 552-1188 to make arrangements.

POST-GAME INTERVIEWS

Head Coach Katie King Crowley and requested players will be available for interviews following a brief cooling-off period. Media wishing to interview players should notify Josh Lentine of the BC media relations staff no later than the conclusion of the game.

AWAY-GAME INTERVIEWS

Media wishing to interview Head Coach Katie King Crowley and/or student-athletes concerning an away match should notify Josh Lentine of the BC media relations staff at least 24 hours prior to the first match of the road trip. Travel, practice and study schedules, etc. will be taken into account and therefore, on some occassions, interviews may not be conducted until the team returns to campus.

2011-12 women’s ice Hockey Media Guide 2010-11 RECAP

The 2010-11 season saw Head Coach Katie King Crowley guide the Eagles to their fourth Beanpot and first women’s Hockey East Tournament title in school history en route to a 24-7-6 mark tying BC’s win record. The return of two Vancouver Olympians, goaltender Molly Schaus and forward Kelli Stack, strengthened an already talented lineup and helped propel BC to its second Frozen Four in four seasons. In the first round of the Beanpot, the Eagles defeated No. 3 Boston University, 2-1, behind a goal and a assist from Stack and forward Mary Restuccia to stage a meeting with the Crimson. In the final, forward Caitlin Walsh was assisted on an early goal by forward Ashley Motherwell, before a pair of third period goals from Restuccia and Stack closed the door on Harvard, 3-1, for BC’s fourth Beanpot championship in six seasons. Schaus was named Most Outstanding Goaltender and Restuccia was tabbed as MVP.

When the Eagles were slotted as the national four-seed and paired with WCHA rival Minnesota – ranked No. 3 in the country at the time – a raucous celebration erupted in the student-athlete lounge of Conte Forum. BC had unfinished business with the Golden Gophers, who had knocked them out of the postseason two years prior, 4-3. When the puck was finally dropped, Boston College exploded with four first-period goals to down UM for the first time in school history, 4-1, and advanced to the Frozen Four. BC was pitted against defending champion and No. 1 seed Wisconsin. The Eagles erased a two goal deficit in the third period

While in Erie, Pa., Boston College celebrated Stack as a topthree finalist for the prestigious Patty Kazmaier Award, also recognizing Schaus as a top-10 finalist. The night before the Frozen Four, Schaus was tabbed a first-team All-American, while Stack earned a second-team All-American honor just weeks after becoming Hockey East’s first three-time Player of the Year. Restuccia and Welch, as well as defenseman Meagan Mangene joined the captains on All-Conference squads. The New England All-Star lineup also featured Restuccia, Schaus and Stack - the New England Player of the Year. Hockey East recognized Wasylk as Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week on four occasions, with Bizzari receiving two mentions. Welch’s Pure Hockey Player of the Week award added to Stack’s five and Schaus’ two as Defensive Player of Week. When all was said and done, Stack and Schaus had combined for five Hockey East Player of the Month accolades.

THE 2011-12 SCHEDULE

Four NCAA Tournament participants from a season ago and a 21-game Hockey East slate headline the 2011-12 Boston College women’s ice hockey schedule. Seven of the first 10 games are scheduled against teams ranked in the preseason national polls, the first puck drop taking place at MinnesotaDuluth on Saturday, Oct. 8. The Bulldogs squad ended the 2010-11 season ranked No. 5 in the nation and has won two of the last four NCAA Championships. “We are very excited about our strength of schedule this year,” Head Coach Katie King Crowley said. “We are happy to add to our very strong league matchups with non-league trips to Minnesota-Duluth and other out of conference opponents. We look forward to the chance to defend our Hockey East and Beanpot titles, as well as returning to the NCAA Tournament. Boston College was one of two teams that represented Hockey East at last year’s Frozen Four, so we are eager to start up another exciting year in BC women’s hockey.” The Eagles were picked to take second place in the preseason Hockey East poll and will get its conference slate underway with a trip to New Hampshire on Friday, Oct. 14. Boston University will host the 2012 Beanpot. The Eagles open the tournament against Northeastern on Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 5 p.m. The second round will take place one week later (Jan. 7) with times and matchups contingent on the outcomes of the first round. Boston College closes out the regular season with a home stand versus Vermont Saturday, Feb. 17 and Sunday, Feb. 18. The postseason will begin at campus sites over the weekend of Friday, February 24 to Sunday, February 26. The Hockey East semifinals and final are slated for Saturday, March 3 and Sunday, March 4 at the Hyannis Youth & Community Center in Hyannis, Mass. The NCAA Tournament gets under way with regional play on Friday, March 9 at selected host sites and the “Frozen Four” will take place the following weekend at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth, Minn.

2011-12 outlook

When the WHEA Tournament came around, BC capitalized on goals from forwards Melissa Bizzari and Taylor Wasylk to force extra time in the semifinal. Stack delivered a goal at 11:57 to send the Eagles to their second conference final. Once there, Northeastern took a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the first period, but forward Danielle Welch put away a goal and assisted defenseman Blake Bolden’s power play to put the Eagles on top. Wasylk added an assurance goal early in the third to help BC claim the Hockey East Championship and secure and automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

here last year being a little bit older, smarter and stronger, we have a lot of defense on our team this year. There’s a lot of competition back there and a lot of fighting for limited spots. Overall, I think that creates a stronger unit. Blake Bolden played really well at the end of last season. Dru Burns is a really good defenseman. Defenders don’t get a lot of recognition, unless they have a lot of points, but I really believe in our defensive core. They’re a great group of kids, who happen to be solid hockey players. They are going to play defense the way it should be played, so they will make it easier for our offense to transition into scoring goals.”

Seniors Andrea Green, Mary Restuccia and Danielle Welch have been elected captains for the upcoming year. “They have different styles of leadership and I think will come together to be a very powerful group,” Crowley stated. “We’re excited to see how far they can take us and where they will take us. The team is very receptive to what they have to say. They’ve been around our program for four years and have been intricate pieces in their own way. [Mary] logs a lot of minutes and shows herself as a leader on the ice. Greenie is more vocal and emerges more in the locker room. She’s the voice and spark plug on our team. Welchie shares both qualities the other two have. I think it’s a good combination of leaders and I am excited to see how they move forward.”

GOALTENDERS

The Eagles will look to senior Kiera Kingston and junior Corinne Boyles to shut down opposing teams this season.

2011-12 Outlook

Kingston has made 23 appearances in three seasons. The Trumball, Conn., native brings a .908 save percentage and 2.65 goals against average to the ice. Boyles redshirted during the 2010-11 season, but saw action in 24 games as a freshman, registering a 2.90 GAA and .907 save percentage. “Kiera and Corrine have different styles,” Crowley observed. “Kiera is very technical, while Boyles is more instinctive. Kiera will always do things with the right method in mind, more by the book, and put herself in the best position to make a save. Boyles relies more on her athleticism to get in position and stop the puck. They are completely different, but both are extremely competitive and challenging for the job. They are great kids and are really going to help our team.”

The Eagles welcome six freshmen and one transfer to the squad. Sophomore Jackie Young comes to BC from Harvard. Young tallied three assists and a plus-seven rating in 31 games for the Crimson as a freshman.

FORWARDS

Twelve veterans return from the offense that averaged 2.86 goals per game in 2010-11. Four of the top five scorers are back, consisting of Bizzari, Restuccia, Welch and Wasylk. Wasylk’s 15 goals last season tops that group, but Restuccia is BC’s active points leader with 84 and seeks to become the eighth Eagle to ever record 100 points in their career.

The rookies all boast experience with USA Hockey. In the summer prior to their first season, forward Alex Carpenter and goalkeeper Megan Miller competed for the USA U-18 National Team in a three game series against Canada. Forward Emily Field and defenseman Emily Pfalzer helped the Red, White and Blue win gold at the IIHF 2011 U18 World Championship in Sweden. Forwards Erin Kickham and Kate Leary have been mainstays at the USA Hockey national camps.

“This year will be more goals by committee,” Crowley foreshadowed. “I think we’ll be a much deeper team and more kids will be putting pucks in the back of the net. Every line will be able to score. Every line will be able to produce.”

Carpenter, Field and Kickham all hail from the Commonwealth, while Leary, a Seabrook, N.H., native, is also from New England. Miller comes to the Heights from Long Grove, Ill., and Pfalzer from Getzville, N.Y.

DEFENDERS

Seniors Allison Szlosek, Jessica Martino and Kristin Regan make up half of the veteran defensemen from a unit that ranked fifth in the nations for goals per game (1.70) and seventh in penalty killing percentage (.884), a year ago. Bolden’s eight goals topped all Hockey East defensemen, while her 19 points was third. Fellow third-year Dru Burns and Mangene also return to a defense that topped the Hockey in scoring defense (1.73 goals per game) and goals allowed (64). “I think our defensive core has grown. 2011-12 women’s ice Hockey Media Guide the Badgers ended the monumental season. While in Erie, Pa., Boston College celebrated Stack as a top-three finalist for the prestigious Patty Kazmaier Award, also recognizing Schaus as a top-10 finalist. The night before the Frozen Four, Schaus was tabbed a first-team All-American, while Stack earned a second-team All-American honor just weeks after becoming Hockey East’s first three-time Player of the Year. Forwards Mary Restuccia and Danielle Welch, as well as defenseman Meagan Mangene joined the captains on the All-Conference squad. The New England All-Star lineup also featured Restuccia, Schaus and Stack - the New England Player of the Year. Hockey East recognized freshman Taylor Wasylk as Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week on four occasions, with classmate Melissa Bizzari receiving two mentions. Welch’s Pure Hockey Player of the Week award added to Stack’s five and Schaus’ two as Defensive Player of Week. When all was said and done, Stack and Schaus had combined for five Hockey East Player of the Month accolades.

K atie K ing C rowley Head Coach Fifth Season Ninth Season at Boston College Brown ‘97

Katie King Crowley enters her fifth season as the Boston College women’s ice hockey head coach. The 2010-11 season saw Crowley guide the Eagles to a 24-76 mark - tying BC’s win record - en route to claiming the first women’s Hockey East title in school history. The return of two Vancouver Olympians, goaltender Molly Schaus and forward Kelli Stack, strengthened an already talented lineup and helped propel BC to its second Frozen Four in four seasons. The 4-1 defeat of Minnesota - another first for the program - pitted the fourth-seeded Eagles against defending national champion Wisconsin in the national semifinal, where BC erased a two goal deficit in the third period before a last second goal by

In her second season as head coach, Crowley guided the team to a 22-9-5 overall record, a Beanpot Championship, an appearance in the Hockey East Championship game and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Under her direction two players earned the program’s first All-American honors, Schaus became BC’s first ever Patty Kazmaier top-10 finalist, three players were named to the New England Hockey Writers All-Star First Team, five players earned spots on the All-Hockey East Team (three first team, one second and one rookie), two Eagles played on the U.S. National and Select Teams and Stack was named Hockey East Player of the Year for the second time. The Eagles record helped earn them their second ever NCAA berth in the quarterfinals where they faced Minnesota for a chance to play in the Frozen Four. Crowley was also involved with USA Hockey as an assistant coach for the U-18 team that won the gold medal at the World Championships in January. In the 2007-08 season, her first season at the helm, she guided the Eagles to a 14-13-7 record. The team finished one point shy of making the Hockey East Tournament for the fourth consecutive year. Crowley coached two Hockey East All-Stars and three Eagles played for the U.S. National Team throughout the season. Before taking over the head coaching position, Crowley was an assistant coach at BC for four years. She helped lead the team from a sub-.500 squad to one of the premier programs in Hockey East. In 2006-07, the Eagles played in their first NCAA Tournament, going all the way to the Frozen Four before losing to Minnesota-Duluth in double overtime. Crowley’s playing days include many U.S. victories and medals. She was a member of the 2005-06 Women’s National Ice Hockey Team and skated in her third Olympic Games in Torino, Italy 9

During her third season, Crowley saw two of her players win silver medals for Team USA at the XXI Vancouver Winter Olympics. Schaus and Stack competed in February 2010, before returning to BC for a final year of collegiate hockey the following year. Back at the Heights, the Eagles finished 8-17-10 on the season. Allie Thunstrom was nominated for the prestigious Patty Kazmaier award, and Kiera Kingston was named Bauer Goaltender of the Month (February). In March, Blake Bolden and Ashley Motherwell earned Hockey Easy All-Rookie Team accolades, while Thunstrom earned second-team honors. Crowley also served as the head coach for Team USA at the 2010 World Women’s Under-18 Championships, where her team won silver.

After the 2006 Winter Olympics, Crowley retired from playing hockey with 265 points in 210 international games. She is the alltime leading scorer for Team USA in Olympic contests, and second-highest scorer for the U.S. in all international play.

Crowley was a member of the Women’s National Team that won its first-ever gold medal at the 2005 International Ice Hockey Federation Women’s World Championship. As a standing member of the U.S. National Team from 1997 to 2006, she also competed in the Four Nations Cup, World Championship Tournaments and the first three Winter Olympics when women’s ice hockey was an official event. Crowley won a gold medal in the 1998 Olympics and a silver medal in the 2002 Games. She took home nine consecutive silver medals in the World Championships (1993-2001) and a gold medal in 2005 with Team USA. Crowley has worked with many national teams. The Eagles’ skipper was named head coach of the 2010 Under-18 National Team that captured a silver medal at the IIHF World Championship. A year prior to that, she served as an assistant coach for the Under18 National Team that won gold at the IIHF World Championship in Germany and the U-18 Select Team. In 2006, she worked with the Under-22 Select Team. She has also worked as a lecturer, coach and instructor at numerous hockey camps throughout New England. She currently sits on the Executive Board at USA Hockey as an Athlete Director. While a student at Brown, Crowley earned ECAC’s Ice Hockey Player of the Year in 1997 and Ivy League Player of the Year three times. She is the Bears’ all-time leading scorer with 206 points, racking up 123 goals and 83 assists in 100 career games. Crowley served as team captain as a junior and senior. Crowley also lettered in softball while at Brown and served as a three-time team captain. She garnered Ivy League Player of the Year in 1996 and the Ivy League Pitcher of the Year in 1997. She is a Hall of Fame inductee for both hockey and softball at Brown.

During Kennedy’s tenure, two players have been named to four Hockey East All-Star teams. The honorees include Maggie Taverna (2007-08, 08-09) and Molly Schaus (2008-09, 10-11). Additionally, two freshmen have been selected to the conference’s All-Rookie Team: Blake Bolden (2009-10) and Meagan Mangene (2010-11). Kennedy came to BC after three years as the head coach of women’s ice hockey at Buckingham Browne and Nichols School in Cambridge, Mass. She has a 3-1-0 record when serving as the head coach of the Eagles. A mainstay on the U.S. National Team from 2001-2006, Kennedy was teammates with Head Coach Katie King Crowley on the 2002 and 2006 U.S. Olympic teams. In 2002, Team USA won the silver medal in Salt Lake City, Utah, and in 2006, it took home the bronze medal in Turin, Italy. Kennedy also played for Team USA when it captured the gold medal at the World Championships in 2005. She currently sits on the Executive Board of USA Hockey as an Athlete Director. As a collegiate player, the Woburn, Mass. native collected the first of three All-American honors and was a top-10 finalist for the prestigious Patty Kazmaier Award, given annually to the most outstanding college player, during the 1997-98 season at Colby. Following her successful freshman campaign, Kennedy took her talents to Minnesota where she led the Golden Gophers to their first national title as a junior, in 2000. The defenseman was decorated with All-American honors in 1999 and 2001, and as a senior she earned Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors. In 2001, Kennedy was also a top-three finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award. In only three seasons with Minnesota, Kennedy amassed 35 goals and 77 assists for 112 points. She carried a +136 rating over a 106game career, which placed her sixth all-time among all players. In 2008, Kennedy was inducted into the Minnesota Hall of Fame.

The 2010-11 season saw Kennedy’s fifth-ranked defense in the nation lead Boston College to the NCAA Frozen Four after claiming its first Hockey East Tournament Championship. Anchored by Vancouver Olympics silver medalist, goaltender Molly Schaus, the Eagles limited opposing teams to just 1.70 goals per game and turned in a penalty killing percentage of 88.4, seventh best in the nation. Schaus rated third in nation for save percentage (.942) and 13th in shutouts (4) en route to collecting first team All-American, Hockey East and New England All-Star honors. In the conference, BC topped the stat lines in scoring defense (1.73 goals per game) and goals allowed (64).

Hockey Humanitarian

Boston College senior defenseman Sarah Carlson was named the recipient of the Hockey Humanitarian Award prior to the 2005 NCAA Frozen Four. Carlson was the 10th recipient of the award which annually recognizes “college hockey’s finest citizen.” She was chosen from a group of five finalists consisting of both genders. During her four years at BC Carlson dedicated herself to improving the lives of others through community service. In the summer of 2004, Carlson traveled to Mexico where she assisted building a church and running a vacation bible school. She also volunteered at a handicap camp and worked with children, organized a sled hockey game fundraiser for disabled children and helped raise money for Boston Children’s Hospital through a dance marathon. Carlson spent her spring break in 2003 on an Urban Plunge, a mission trip to innercity Boston to help with an after-school program. That season the four-year member of the Dean’s List was recognized with the American Women’s Coaches Association Scholar All-America Award, in addition to receiving the first of her two Leadership Awards for the BC Women’s Hockey Team. While at the Heights, Carlson also participated in food and clothing drives, led Bible Study groups, and volunteered as a camp counselor. A two-time co-captain of the women’s ice hockey team, Carlson picked up 23 points during her career at the Heights. She was named to the Hockey East First Team and New England Hockey Writers Women’s Division I All-Star team as a senior. Carlson was the first student-athlete from Boston College to receive the Hockey Humanitarian Award.

Father Leahy joined the department of history at Marquette University in 1985 and became a tenured associate professor there six years later. In July 1991, he was named executive vice president at Marquette, where he served until being named president of Boston College in 1996. During his years at Boston College, Father Leahy has presided over an institution that has solidified its position among the nation's best and most selective national universities. Since 1996, BC's endowment, sponsored research grants and student financial aid have doubled, and the percentage of student applicants accepted has fallen from 41 percent to 27 percent, while SAT scores have risen by more than 150 points. In addition, 100 full-time faculty members have been added, minority student enrollment in undergraduate programs has climbed from 18 percent to 27 percent and annual cash gifts to the University have increased from $24 million to $100 million. During his presidency, undergraduate applications to Boston College have grown from 16,500 to more than 33,000, making BC one of the 10 most- applied to private universities in the United States. Currently, the University enrolls students from all 50 states and 80 countries, and its undergraduates have earned more than 285 prestigious fellowships, including two Rhodes Scholarships. Student-athletes at BC succeed in balancing the demands of academics and athletics, and BC consistently ranks among those universities with the highest NCAA graduation rates. Most recently, the Boston College community has been engaged in a comprehensive assessment and planning effort that resulted in a 10-year Strategic Plan. This plan will build on Boston College's strengths and accomplishments of the past and will focus additional resources on undergraduate liberal arts education and formation, as well as integrated science research and teaching. The University also intends to increasingly apply the strengths of its professional schools to resolving critical societal issues, and foster even more international links. William P. Leahy, S.J. became the 25th president of Boston College on July 31, 1996. Born in Omaha, he grew up on his family's farm near Imogene, Iowa. After one year of college at Creighton University, he entered the Wisconsin Province of the Society of Jesus in 1967. He received a bachelor's degree in philosophy and a master's degree in United States history from Saint Louis University in 1972 and 1975, respectively. Between 1975 and 1979, he studied theology at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, California, earning a master's degree in divinity and a master's degree in sacred theology while there. Ordained a priest in 1978, he completed doctoral studies in United States history at Stanford University in 1985.

DeFilippo was instrumental in raising money to build the privately funded $27 million, 72,000-square-foot Yawkey Athletics Center, which houses the football program, the Office of Learning Resources for Student-Athletes, and a large function area for general University use. After football moved into the Yawkey Center, BC undertook a multi-million dollar renovation Conte Forum to provide additional locker room and office space for many of BC’s 31 varsity sports.

director of Athletics Since Gene DeFilippo became Director of Athletics in September of 1997, he has led the BC athletics program to an unprecedented period of innovation, growth, fundraising, athletic and academic success. He also led the program through one of the most significant periods in its history as it transitioned to full membership in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Under DeFilippo’s leadership, Boston College student-athletes’ achievements in the classroom have become an immense source of pride for the University and its supporters. Twenty-one Boston College sports teams received a perfect Graduation Success Rate score of 100, according to data released by the NCAA last November. That figure represents the most teams with a perfect 100 score of any Division I intercollegiate athletics program in the country for the second consecutive year. In addition, BC football – with a score of 90 – was one of only six FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) programs in the country to receive a score of 90 or better. In May, Boston College’s varsity sports teams scored big when the NCAA released its annual Academic Progress Rate report. The average APR score of the 28 BC teams that were counted was 989 - 19 points above the national average (970). Every BC team scored 960 or above, and six teams - men’s fencing, men’s golf, men’s skiing, women’s lacrosse, women’s skiing and women’s tennis - scored a perfect 1,000. Boston College’s football team scored a 971 - a full 25 points above the national average. The men’s basketball team scored a 972 - 27 points above the national average. “Boston College is, above all, an academic institution,” DeFilippo said. “We want to field competitive sports teams, and we want to win, which our teams do. But when we recruit student-athletes, we tell them they have an opportunity to receive a degree from one of the greatest universities in the country, and our mission is to ensure that they are successful. We are extremely proud of our student-athletes’ accomplishments in the classroom.”

DeFilippo renamed the Athletics Association’s fundraising arm (formerly Blue Chips) in honor of longtime Athletics Director Bill Flynn. Alumni, parents and friends of Boston College contributed nearly $20 million during the past year including more than 40 commitments of $100,000 or more in support of intercollegiate athletics. During the Light the World Campaign, DeFilippo has led an athletics fundraising effort that has totaled more than $150 million. Anne and Gene DeFilippo cemented their commitment to Boston College by announcing their pledge of $100,000 to endow a scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a female student-athlete who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement and financial need. In athletics competition, DeFilippo has overseen some of the most successful seasons in Boston College Athletics history. During the 2010-11 season, the football team appeared in a school-record 12th consecutive bowl game, the women’s soccer team advanced to its first Final Four and the women’s ice hockey team advanced to the Frozen Four. In 2010, the men’s ice hockey team captured its fourth national championship (its third since 2001). In 2008, the men’s soccer team captured both the ACC regular-season and tournament championships and entered the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament as the overall No. 1 seed. From 1993-97, DeFilippo served as director of athletics at Villanova University. He served as Associate Director of Athletics at the University of Kentucky from 1987-93, Director of Athletics at the University of South Carolina-Spartanburg from 1984-87 and Director of Administrative Services at Vanderbilt University from 1983-84. His coaching experience includes three years as offensive backfield coach at Vanderbilt (1980-82), which included the 1982 Hall of Fame Bowl. From 1975-79, he was offensive coordinator at Youngstown State University, during which time the team won two consecutive Mid-Continent Conference championships, 1978-79. In 1973-74, he was graduate assistant football coach for the University of Tennessee, coaching in the 1973 Gator Bowl and 1974 Liberty Bowl. A 1973 graduate of Springfield College with a Bachelor of Science degree, DeFilippo earned three varsity letters as a quarterback in football during his undergraduate career. He received a master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Tennessee in 1974.

Last year, 349 BC student-athletes maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or better, earning the Athletic Director’s Award for Academic Excellence. BC’s graduation rate for all student-athletes has consistently ranked in the nation’s top ten. NCSA Athletic Recruiting ranked Boston College 13th among NCAA Division I universities in its annual power rankings, which assess the combined academic and athletics standards of all NCAA athletic programs across the country.

He was recently named the 2010 recipient of the New England Prep School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Martin Williams Souders Award, presented annually to a graduate of a New England independent school who made a distinguished record in sports and who since made a distinguished record in life through his/her ideals, leaderships and accomplishments. Past recipients have included George H.W. Bush, Sargent Shriver, Michael Erizione, Dee Rowe, Bill Cleary, and former BC Athletics Director Bill Flynn.

1947 and 1952. The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences first offered doctoral programs in 1952, followed by the graduate schools of Education, Nursing, Management, and Social Work. By 1970 all undergraduate programs had become coeducational, and today women make up more than half of the University’s enrollment. In 1974, Boston College acquired a 40-acre site, 1.5 miles from the Chestnut Hill Campus, that had been owned by Newton College of the Sacred Heart. The land is the present site of the Law School and of residence halls housing some 800 freshmen. Thirty years later, the University acquired 43 acres from the Boston Archdiocese on land adjoining the Lower Campus in Chestnut Hill. The Brighton Campus is now the site of the School of Theology and Ministry, which was formed in 2008, when the Weston Jesuit School of Theology re-affiliated with Boston College and was joined with the Institute of Religious Education and Pastoral Ministry.

Originally located on Harrison Avenue in Boston’s South End, the College outgrew its urban setting early in the 20th century and moved to the former Lawrence farm in then-rural Chestnut Hill, where ground was broken on June 19, 1909 for the construction of a central Recitation Building, later named Gasson Hall in honor of President Thomas I. Gasson, S.J., who led the relocation. The Recitation Building opened in March 1913. The three other buildings that still shape the core of the campus—St. Mary’s Hall, Devlin Hall, and Bapst Library— opened in 1917, 1924, and 1928, respectively. Tom Peters, who was promoted to senior associate athletics director in May 2010, is in his 20th year at Boston College. Prior to coming to the Heights, Peters spent more than three years as associate athletic director at Tulane University. In addition, Peters served as Tulane’s acting athletic director from December 1990 until June 1991.

Peters’ responsibilities at Boston College include overseeing nine of the men’s and women’s athletic programs — men’s and women’s ice hockey, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s fencing and baseball — and serving as the department’s liaison with numerous athleticrelated support groups. Peters has also served as tournament manager for a host of postseason events, including the 2009 NCAA Men’s Basketball East Regional, the 1999 and 2003 NCAA Men’s Basketball East Region First and Second Rounds and the 2003 Intercollegiate Fencing Association championships. Peters is also a member of the Beanpot Hockey Tournament Committee, which organizes the annual competition between the city’s four Division I hockey schools. Additionally, Peters has served on the executive committee of Women’s Hockey East since the league’s inception in 2002-03, serving as chair of the committee during the 2006-07 season. Peters currently serves on the Hockey East Championships Committee. In addition to his departmental assignments, Peters has been active on campus and in the Boston community. He has served on the University Committee on Alcohol and Drug Abuse and is a former member of the Student Leadership Awards Committee for the Office of the Dean of Student Development. He also was a long-time committee member of the Boston Police Department Youth and Student-Athlete Collaborative.

A 1971 graduate of the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Peters was a three-year hockey letterman for the Minutemen. Peters earned a master’s degree in sports management from the University in 1973. Peters was then an administrative assistant at the University of Virginia, before joining the New Boston Garden Corporation and Boston Bruins as assistant sales and marketing manager in 1973. In 1976, he was named sales and marketing manager. From there, Peters moved to New Jersey where he was the assistant athletic director at Rutgers University from 198188. He was the tournament manager of the NCAA Basketball Tournament’s East Regional from 1986-88. Peters was honored by his alma mater in November of 2004, when the sport management program awarded him the 2003-04 Harold J. VanderZwaag Distinguished Alumnus Award in recognition of outstanding contributions to the sport industry. A native of Arlington, Mass., Peters has two daughters: Nicole, a private equity and fundraising liaison and a 1999 graduate of Connecticut College, and Erica, a doctoral student in clinical psychology at the University of Vermont and a 2002 graduate of Boston College.

The forum also houses the 1,000-seat Power Gymnasium, as well as offices for Athletic Association staff and varsity coaches, film and conference rooms, the weight training and sports medicine facilities, locker and equipment rooms, and practice and storage rooms for the Boston College band. Conte Forum is also Boston College fan central, where tickets may be purchased for all BC athletics events. Its main concourse contains concession stands and souvenir shops. Conte Forum’s eight luxury boxes overlook both the stadium and the basketball/hockey venue. Ticket Office - The Conte Forum ticket office is located at Gate B of Conte Forum. The façade of the ticket office was renovated in the summer of 2008. Also added where two LCD televisions for guests to Conte Forum. Marching Band/Pep Band Room - The Boston College Marching Band and Pep Band make their home in the Band Room located at Gate C of Conte Forum. The Band stores their instruments and conducts practice in the Band Room. Luxury Suites - Conte Forum hosts eight recently renovated luxury suites for hockey and basketball. These suites are located on the Alumni Stadium side of Conte and features views of both Alumni Stadium and Conte Forum. Luxury suites are equipped with LCD televisions, comfortable seating and a dining area. Media Suite - The Conte Forum media suite is home to various press conferences and media gatherings. The media suite is located adjacent to Alumni Stadium on the first level of the South side of Conte Forum. A full press conference room is in the adjacent room with data and telephone ports for working members of the media. Strength & Conditioning Room - The Conte Forum weight room was completely revamped and remodeled in the summer of 2006. It covers more than 7,000 square feet and can accommodate more than 100 student-athletes at a time. The room contains more than 25,000 pounds of free weights and selectorized machines. The strength & conditioning room provides several modes of training to meet the diverse needs of the numerous student-athletes at BC. Sports Medicine - Recently renovated, the Sports Medicine facilities in Conte Forum occupy approximately 3,000 square feet. They include a rehabilitation area containing equipment used fro development of strength and muscular coordination along with a LIDO isokinetic rehabilitation and testing machine, whirlpools, physician exam rooms and offices, as well as a separate therapy area containing the latest in technical equipment for the treatment of injuries. Student Athlete Lounge - The newest addition to Conte Forum is the student-athlete lounge located at the Conte Forum entrance next Gate D and across from the Sports Medicine office. The Student Athlete Lounge offers players from all sports a place to relax and study between classes or practice. Trophy Case - Enjoy championship relics from Boston College’s rich athletic tradition. Handsome displays and historical trophies line the Alumni Stadium side of the concourse in Conte Forum and pay tribute to the program’s 31 varsity sports programs. Since it opened in October 1988, Silvio O. Conte Forum has been the heart of the Boston College athletics program. From October through March, its main arena is the home of the Eagles’ men’s and women’s basketball and hockey teams, and some of the most thrilling sports action in Boston. The arena seats 8,606 for basketball and 7,884 for hockey, and sellouts are common during the seasons.

he Women’s Hockey East Association will celebrate its 10th anniversary T season of play after officially commencing league action in the fall of 2002. In nine years, the conference has emerged as one of the top women’s ice hockey conferences in the nation, having sent five teams to the Frozen Four and 11 teams to the NCAA Tournament, which includes the most successful season in 2010-2011, sending Boston University and Boston College to the Frozen Four with the Terriers making the league’s second appearance in the NCAA National Championship Game. In 2011, the Boston College Eagles earned their first WHEA Tournament Championship in school history defeating Northeastern. The Terriers hosted the ninth annual tournament championship at Walter Brown Arena as the top seed in the tournament, claiming first regular-season championship in school history. BC’s Kelli Stack was named Player of the Year for a league-record third time in the spring and BU’s Marie-Philip Poulin took home Rookie of the Year honors. PC’s Bob Deraney won the Coach of the Year Award for the second consecutive season. Vermont freshman defensemen Megan Dalbec posted a 4.0 GPA to earn Hockey East Top-Scholar Athlete honors headlining the list of a league-record 89 student-athletes named to the WHEA All-Academic Team in 2010-2011. The league also honored four student-athletes that received “Distinguished Scholar” status. Those earning “Distinguished Scholar” status achieved a 3.0 or better in each semester over four varsity seasons. Maine’s Jennie Gallo and Danielle Cyr were two teammates honored with the distinction, while Boston College’s Molly Schaus and UNH’s Kayley Herman were also recipients of the honor. I n February 2007, the league debuted its inaugural “Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer”. The one-day event was hosted by Hockey East schools as a way to establish a greater fan base, to raise needed funds, and to work with the specific charities to raise awareness for both the league and the specific cause. In the initial year, close to $20,000 was donated back to local breast cancer charities (Friends of Mel’s Foundation and the American Cancer Society), vastly exceeding expectations. Last year, over $31,000 dollars was raised to bring the fouryear total to over $145,000. “Skating Strides” has won two national awards at NACMA in the “Single Day Attendance Promotion” category in 2007 and 2009. The fifth annual “Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer” will have an event on every WHEA campus this season, as well as participation by all of the Hockey East men’s teams over the course of a two weekends.

History

s women’s ice hockey steadily expanded from its original status as an emerging sport to its current status as an established NCAA A championship sport, it became apparent that Hockey East should seriously consider sponsoring a separate league to accommodate its five member schools that initially had varsity programs for women: Boston College, Maine, New Hampshire, Northeastern and Providence. The uncertainty remained until a split in the Eastern College Athletic Conference grouped the five aforementioned programs into a separate league, the ECAC Women’s Eastern League, along with three other unaffiliated programs. Seeking league solidarity, administrators from the five Hockey East institutions acted. In September of 2001, the long-incubated idea became a reality when the athletic directors voted to found the new women’s league under the existing Hockey East banner, with play scheduled to begin no later than the 2004-05 season. The five schools with varsity programs entered as charter members with the stipulation that any other Hockey East school that added a varsity women’s program in the future would be freely admitted to the league. xpediting the process in the interests of the participating teams, the league and the sport itself, Commissioner Joe Bertagna worked with a E selected task force to successfully prepare the Hockey East women’s league for launch in the 2002-03 season, two years ahead of schedule. An important part of that process was the acceptance of an invitation extended to the University of Connecticut to join the newly formed league as its sixth active member. The triumphant effort immediately afforded the participating administrators a stronger voice in the advancement of their women’s ice hockey programs and alleviated the ECAC of continuing the maintenance of the Women’s Eastern League. Players, fans, coaches and administrators alike were all anticipating the intensified competition created by the new circle of teams that were already familiar rivals. I n 2005, the Women’s Hockey East Association welcomed the addition of two more teams to its growing family, Boston University and the University of Vermont. For BU, it marked the inaugural season for women’s hockey as a varsity sport. Although the Women’s Hockey East Association is still in its infancy, its member programs have storied histories that include several championships and individual awards at the highest levels of play. The first 14 ECAC championships were shared among New Hampshire, Northeastern and Providence, all charter members of Hockey East. Northeastern forward Brooke Whitney was named the recipient of the 2002 Patty Kazmaier Award as the nation’s top female collegiate player, an honor first won by New Hampshire’s Brandy Fisher in 1998. Had the award been in existence beforehand, it surely would have been won at some point by Cammi Granato, a three-time ECAC Player of the Year who led Providence to back-to-back championships in 1992 and 1993. Five years later, in 1998, alongside nine other alums of what are now Hockey East programs, Granato captained Team USA to the Olympic gold medal during the first Olympic tournament that featured women’s ice hockey as a medal sport. Granato will be inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in October for her contributions to the sport. Beginning in 2009, the WHEA athletic directors voted to honor the league Player of the Year with the Cammi Granato Award. Perhaps the proudest legacy that the Women’s Hockey East Association has established is the Hockey Humanitarian Award. The most prestigious off-ice honor, and arguably the highest overall honor in the sport, the Hockey Humanitarian Award recognizes college hockey’s finest citizen each year and encompasses both male and female athletes in all divisions. Its winners have demonstrated outstanding contributions to society through leadership in charity work and volunteerism. Northeastern senior forward Missy Elumba was the 2009 recipient, as the fifth Hockey East student-athlete to receive the prestigious honor. Elumba was the 14th all-time recipient and joined former Husky goaltender Chanda Gunn, who received the award in 2004, as the second athlete in Northeastern women’s hockey history. BC’s Sarah Carlson received it in 2005, making Women’s Hockey East the first league to boast back-to-back winners.
