OUTLOOK

2011 outlook The Eagles enter the 2011 season coming off the best year in program history with the confidence and talent to turn this year into another momentous campaign.

2011 EAGLES

CO A C H E S

The 2010 squad boasted a record-breaking 12-6 record with the most wins ever by a BC lacrosse team, as well as the longest win streak with six victories to open play. The milestone year also marked the first time a Division I BC squad has ever been nationally ranked, rising as high as 17th in the country. Several key games highlighted the Eagles historic run, including an ACC conference win over Virginia Tech and a win over crosstown rival Boston University for the first time in Head Coach Bowen Holden’s career with the Eagles and for the first time ever on BU’s home field.

2010 REVIEW

“In terms of this year, our team has never worked this hard,” Holden said. “They have put in so much time and effort this fall and I think they’re in a really good place. Our goals are lofty yet attainable and the team is eager to prove it deserves the respect it has worked hard to achieve.”

Attack Senior captain Jill Amo will lead the Eagles’ offense this season with her game insight and leadership skills.

HIST ORY

“She has a calming presence that is so valuable,” Holden said. “I don’t expect her to be our leading scorer but she will likely be an unsung heroine. She has an incredible ability to see the field. She knows every single offense and can tell everybody where to go, what to do, and when to be where, all while doing what she needs to do.”

R EC OR D S

In the absence of leading scorer Lauren Costello, BC will look to junior Brittany Wilton to step into the spotlight. “We will probably rely heavily on Brittany Wilton, who’s really come into her own this year and has the potential to be one of the best attackers in the country,” Holden said. “She’s absolutely driven to win and has a killer instinct.”

B C

Sophomore Brooke Blue will also see significant time on the attacking end after an impressive freshman year debut. “She brings with her an intensity that is contagious,” said Holden. “She plays the game with so much enthusiasm and joy and intensity that you can’t help but smile when you watch her play. She’ll be another huge player on our offensive end.”

Midfield After years of relying on one or two players, BC’s midfield is the strongest it’s ever been with several solid options. Seniors Hannah Alley and Kristen Igoe will anchor the midfield, in addition to juniors Sam Taylor and freshmen Cali Ceglarski and Carly Weilminster. Junior Katherine Caufield will be a defensive midfielder, supporting both units during games. “Kristin Igoe is our top midfielder,” Holden said. “She’s on the U.S. team which has provided her with incredible experience, and she knows what it takes to succeed. There are so many student-athletes on this team who want to win but she is willing to have the ball in her stick at the end of the game and a team needs that to be successful.” “Hannah and Sam have also really developed immensely in the off-season, and I am extremely pleased with their performances. They, too, are going to be crucial to our success.” Eagles who are also possible at midfield are sophomore Caroline Barclay as well as freshman Claire Blohm.

Defense Senior captain Jill Rekart is the clear leader of the defensive unit, having played in every game of her career. “She has been a tremendous asset to this program,” Holden said. “She played midfield early on in her career and in the last two years has been a solid defender, earning Regional All-America accolades. The poise and confidence with which she plays is huge. She understands the defense in and out and can tell people where to go and what to do. She is going to be critical to our success.” Rekart will be helped by defensive midfielder Caufield as well as sophomores Jessie Coffield and Ali Meagher. Caufield played a crucial role on the defensive end as a sophomore and will be relied upon even more this year. With a year of experience under her belt, she will provide an important support structure to Rekart and the entire defensive unit. “Jessie Coffield is one of the most aggressive defenders we’ve ever had,” Holden said. “She has a feistiness about her that’s incredible and something we need to have on the field, and her risk-taking is second to none which is invaluable.”

Other Eagles who will see time on attack are junior Ginny Gummersall, sophomores Delaney Brault and Caroline Martignetti, and newcomers Moira Barry and Kelly McNelis.

“Freshmen Moira Barry and Kelly McNelis really developed quickly this fall and fit nicely into our system early on,” Holden said. “We expect them to continue developing and see action this spring.”

“Kara O’Connell is probably one of the hardest working kids on the team, as a freshman, and that rubs off on her teammates,” Holden said. “She is getting better and works so hard to do so. I expect her to have an impact this spring.” Others looking to earn time on the defensive end are juniors Kate Collins, returning from injury, and Liz Donovan.

Goalkeepers

The Eagles will head to Vermont before the ACC tournament in Cary, N.C. at the end of the season. “Certainly our goal is to make it further than we’ve ever made it before,” Holden said.

CO A C H E S

Freshman Kara O’Connell has made an immediate impact on the defense and will see plenty of time on the defensive end this season.

“Next we have BU. We beat them on the road last year for the first time in my career and hopefully we can do the same at home this year. It’s a great rivalry and always a great battle.”

BC will end the regular season at New Hampshire before waiting for a bid to the NCAA tournament. “I think our schedule will consistently challenge our team and force us to stay up and ready, since we can’t take anyone for granted. We’ve got to keep going and keep pushing and keep working hard. I think our schedule prepares us well for each test along the way, and will hopefully help us be in the best position possible for the ACC tournament and NCAAs. We have to take care of business one step at a time!”

2011 EAGLES

“Ali Meagher is coming into her own this year not only as a defender but as a leader,” Holden said. “She and Katherine Caufield have been trying to relieve some of that pressure from Rekart, which is nice to see, so they’ll both likely be forces on our defensive end.”

2 010 REVIEW

Senior Sheila Serafino and junior Catherine Conway both saw plenty of action in the fall season and will battle for the starting position come February. Both goalkeepers have had moments of brilliance on the field for the Eagles and bring different talents between the pipes. Consistency will be a deciding factor come game-time

HIS TORY

“They are two very different players, from their presence on the field to what they’re capable of doing, and we are lucky to be in the position where we have two solid goalies fighting for the one spot. That competitiveness will help them both improve and undoubtedly help our team win,” Holden said.

The Season Ahead

RE C OR D S

After a record-breaking winning season in 2010, the Eagle enter this year confident and prepared for the upcoming challenges presented by their demanding schedule. BC will open with Hofstra, an annually top-20 team, before delving into nonconference matchups with Duquesne, Villanova, Yale, Holy Cross, and Connecticut in addition to an ACC game against Virginia Tech, who the Eagles defeated last season.

B C

After that BC will be tested with a tough mid-season stretch. “We’ll face Harvard, who we’ve lost to the past three years,” Holden said. “Then there’s Maryland, who beat us by one last year and went on to win the National Championship. There’s also tough games against North Carolina and then Albany, another top-20 program last year, and Virginia and Duke who always bring on great challenges.” 2 0 1 1

2010 REVIEW

2011 EAGLES

C O A C H E S

Bowen Holden Bowen Holden enters her sixth year as the Eagles’ head coach. 2010 was a milestone year for Holden as the Eagles went 12-6, the best record in program history. They set the record for most wins with 12, as well as the record for the longest win streak by a BC lacrosse team with six wins to open the season. The 2010 squad also earned the program’s first-ever national ranking, going as high as 17th in the country. Holden’s squad finished the season with a +70 in overall goal differential. Several games marked highlights for the team, including an ACC conference win against Virginia Tech and a win over crosstown rival Boston University for the first time in Holden’s career with the Eagles and for the first time ever on BU’s home field. Senior Lauren Costello had her best season yet with four broken records and a second-place ranking on the all-time Single Season Assists record book. She was also named to the IWLCA All-American second-team, only the second lacrosse player ever to earn the honor and the first to place on the second team. Four players earned IWLCA All-Region Honors. Five were named to the All-ACC Academic Team, two were named to the IWLCA Academic Honor Roll, and the IWLCA named BC an Academic Squad for the 5th time in Holden’s five years.

HIST ORY

The 2009 season was also one of the best in school history, especially since entering the ACC in 2005. Completing its first winning season with a 9-8 record (9-9 overall), the Eagles made great strides. Five of the team’s opponents were ranked in the top 10-15 in the country throughout the entire season. Four individuals were honored as IWLCA Regional All-Americans, two made the All-ACC team (the most ever), four were named to the All-ACC Academic Team, two were honored as IWLCA Academic Honor Roll members, and the entire team was an IWLCA Academic Honor Squad for maintaining a GPA above 3.0.

Prior to arriving at BC, Holden was the associate head coach at Georgetown University in 2004 and an assistant for the previous three years. Holden helped the Hoyas to a 56-16 record over a four-year span. She also played a key role in leading the Hoyas to two NCAA Final Fours, including the 2002 NCAA National Championship game. The Hoyas won four consecutive undefeated Big East Championships and made four straight appearances in the NCAA tournament. During her tenure, Georgetown had one Tewaaraton Trophy winner, eight All-Americans, a National Attacker of the Year, a National Defender of the Year and six Big East Players of the Year. Holden is a 2001 graduate of Georgetown University, earning her Bachelor of Arts in physics. She also completed a Masters degree from Georgetown’s Public Policy Institute. Holden played lacrosse for one year at Bowdoin College in 1998 where she earned second-team regional All-American honors and team MVP as a freshman. Holden then transferred to Georgetown, where she started in goal for the next three years. She was a three-time All-American and two-time co-MVP. In her final season, she was named a captain, was an NCAA National Champion finalist, was named to the IWLCA All-Academic squad, and was a firstteam national and regional All-American. She was voted NCAA Goalkeeper of the Year as well. Also recognized for her efforts in the classroom, Holden earned Georgetown’s annual Robert A. Duffey Scholar-Athlete Award and the NCAA District of Columbia Woman of the Year Award for outstanding academic and athletic achievement and service to the community. Active in the lacrosse community off the field, Holden serves as Chair of the NCAA North Region All-America Committee. Holden is a native of Lincoln, Mass. and graduated from Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School in 1997. She currently resides in Newton, Mass. With her husband Charles Martin and their two daughters, Cannon and McClaine.

R EC OR D S

In Holden’s third year, the Eagles captured their first top-10 win in program history by beating then #7-ranked North Carolina in double-overtime. This launched BC into the #4 spot in the ACC at the end of the regular season and earned BC its first-ever 4th seed in the ACC tournament. Overall, the 2008 team ended the season with a 7-10 record with several individual accolades earned along the way. In 2007, BC compiled a 6-11 record, 1-4 in the competitive ACC. Four of the team’s five ACC opponents were ranked in the top six of the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll. The Eagles made the IWLCA Honor Roll for the second year in a row, placing third on the Division I Honor Squads list with a 3.028 cumulative GPA. Three players received IWLCA Academic Honor Roll accolades and were named to the All-ACC Academic team.

B C

The Eagles ended their 2006 inaugural season in the ACC 8-9 overall and 1-4 in conference play. Six of BC’s opponents were ranked in the top 13 in the country. Holden’s team was honored in 2006 as one of 42 teams on the IWLCA Academic Honor Roll. Two of Holden’s student-athletes received individual IWLCA academic honors, and one earned IWLCA Regional AllAmerican status for accomplishments on the field.

The Boston College lacrosse team welcomes Acacia Walker as the new Associate Head Coach. Prior to working with the Eagles, Walker was the Associate Head Coach at the University of Massachusetts, where the team won two consecutive Atlantic 10 Conference Championships. Walker acted as the offensive coordinator as well as handling recruiting responsibilities. She also handled travel, budget management, video breakdown, and camps. Before that she was an Assistant Coach at Northwestern from 2005-2008 where the Wildcats won three consecutive NCAA National Championships and three consecutive ALC Conference Championships.

A native of Norwell, Mass. and a graduate of Thayer Academy where she was inducted into the Thayer Academy Sports Hall of Fame, Kent was a four-year letterwinner at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. She played soccer, basketball and lacrosse. In lacrosse, she was a two year captain, MVP and leading scorer, as well as a Brine/IWLCA 2nd Team All-American her senior season in 1990.

“Acacia has already made an impact on our team,” said Head Coach Bowen Holden. “I truly believe she was the right person at the right time for our program. Her passion, knowledge, and drive are contagious, and I know she will make her mark immediately.”

In 2010, the 12-6 Eagles garnered the best record in program history and the defensive end was a large part of that success. Goaltender Sheila Serafino led the ACC in saves with 125 and finished second in saves-per-game with 6.94. As a whole, the defense only allowed 162 goals to BC’s 232.

Walker will serve as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator, as well as, play a key role in recruiting and many other facets of the daily operations of the Boston College program. Walker graduated from Maryland in 2005 with a degree in American Studies. She played for the Terrapins and captained the team in her senior year. She was an IWLCA All American as well as an All-ACC selection. In 2005 she won the University of Maryland M Club ‘James H. Kehoe’ Award, and in 2004 and 2005 was a Tewaaraton Candidate, the award given to the male and female Collegiate National Player of the Year. A four-year starter at Annapolis High School in Annapolis, Md., Walker was named MVP at the U.S. Lacrosse High School Senior All Star Game in 2001 and was the youngest member of the World Championship U19 Team that won gold in Perth, Australia in 1999. She is still an active player who has been involved with the U.S. Women’s National Team for the past nine years. She won a gold medal with the 2009 World Cup Team in Prague, Czech Republic and is also a member of the 2010-11 United States National Team.

Upon graduation from Colby, Kent joined the staff at the Hyde School in Bath, Maine where she taught and coached lacrosse and soccer, eventually becoming the Dean of Students and Athletic Director. Her accolades at Hyde include the 1995 Maine State Champions in lacrosse. After leaving Hyde, Kent became the Varsity Lacrosse Coach at Norwell High School in 1998 where she won back-to-back state titles in 2005 and 2006 and was named Massachusetts Coach of the Year in 2005. In addition to her coaching duties at Norwell, Kent was also the Codirector of Norwell Youth Lacrosse and the Co-director and owner of Xtreme Lacrosse and Soccer camps. Kent has significant ties to Boston College, as her four siblings are alumni of BC: Michelle Lally O’Grady `89, Rob Lally `90, Doug Lally `91, and Greg Lally ‘96. Kent currently lives in Norwell with her husband Jeff, and their six children: Alicia (20), Callahan (15), Kenzie (14), Parker (12), Addison (11), and Bailey (10).

B C

Walker hails from Annapolis, Md. and currently resides in Boston, Mass.

Kent is in her third year as an assistant coach for the Eagles. She focuses her attention on the defensive end, but she plays a crucial role in individual development as well.

community service

CO A C H E S

“Community service and giving back to others has always been a standard in our program...but it has become something we choose and love doing.” – Caroline Barclay, ’13

2 011 EAGLES

“Often, community service is viewed as giving to others, which it rightfully is, but the joy we receive in return from these children is indescribable. The lessons on life and perspective each of them provides by simply being with us is something remarkable and invaluable. There is no question it is a mutual day of lessons and affection. Our student-athletes are unbelievable with these children.” – Head Coach Bowen Holden

2010 REVIEW

“We are so fortunate to get the opportunity to take part in such meaningful community service here at Boston College. We especially love going to the Franciscan hospital for our annual cookie decorating with the kids. It is a great reminder of how lucky we are but also how important it is to give back.” – Hannah Alley, ’11

newton campus LAcrossE-soccer Complex Nestled behind the law school on Boston College’s Newton Campus is one of nation’s elite lacrosse/soccer facilities.

Polytan surfaces are used at the World Cup Stadium in Stuttgart, Germany, the Olympic Stadium in Munich, and on many fields both at the collegiate level and internationally. With the addition of the Polytan artificial playing surface, coupled with offseason updates that include permanent team benches canopied to guard against the elements and a 30-seat, enclosed press box complete with a roof-deck video-filming area, Boston College is proud to boast a brand new state-of-the-art facility.

The artificial playing surface made its regular-season debut on Aug. 29, 2008 against Boston University. Overall, the field is entering its 11th year in existence. It spent the first eight seasons as a natural grass pitch before switching to the artificial turf. Lights were added to the field prior to the 2003 campaign.

HISTORY

2010 REVIEW

Since Gene DeFilippo became Director of Athletics in September of 1997, he has led the BC athletics program to an unprecedented period of innovation, growth, fundraising, athletic and academic success. He also led the program through one of the most significant periods in its history as it transitioned to full membership in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Under DeFilippo’s leadership, Boston College student-athletes’ achievements in the classroom have become an immense source of pride for the University and its supporters. Twenty-one Boston College sports teams received a perfect Graduation Success Rate score of 100, according to data released by the NCAA last November. That figure represents the most teams with a perfect 100 score of any Division I intercollegiate athletics program in the country. Last year, 379 BC student-athletes maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or better, earning the Athletic Director’s Award for Academic Excellence. BC’s graduation rate for all student-athletes has consistently ranked in the nation’s top ten. DeFilippo initiated an impressive overhaul of BC’s athletics facilities that includes new football practice facilities, a total renovation of Conte Forum, including a new sound system, floor and video boards, new soccer, field hockey and lacrosse facilities on the Newton campus, new Field Turf for Alumni Stadium, and an air-inflated bubble to cover the stadium turf to provide an indoor practice facility for all sports during the winter months. DeFilippo was instrumental in raising money to build the privately funded $27 million, 72,000-squarefoot Yawkey Athletics Center, which houses the football program, the Office of Learning Resources for Student-Athletes, and a large function area for general use. After football moved into the Yawkey Center, BC undertook a multi-million dollar renovation Conte Forum to provide additional locker room and office space for many of BC’s 31 varsity sports.

DeFilippo renamed the Athletics Association’s fundraising arm (formerly Blue Chips) in honor of longtime Athletics Director Bill Flynn. Alumni, parents and friends of Boston College contributed more than $27 million during the past year (this total includes an extraordinary payment towards a capital project). The 4,600 donors to the Flynn Fund prove that there is strength in numbers; nearly 700 alumni, parents and friends have given to BC Athletics for at least 10 consecutive years. Anne and Gene DeFilippo cemented their commitment to Boston College by announcing their pledge of $100,000 to endow a scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a female student-athlete who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement and financial need. In athletics competition, DeFilippo has overseen some of the most successful seasons in Boston College Athletics history. During the 2009-10 season, the football team appeared in a school-record 11th consecutive bowl game and the men’s ice hockey team captured its fourth national championship (its third since 2001). In 2008, the men’s soccer team captured both the ACC regular-season and tournament championships and entered the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament as the overall No. 1 seed.
