desert

April 24, 2013

On behalf of the Board of Directors of Jewish Family Service of the Desert (JFS), we welcome you to the sixth annual production of One Night Only, presented by the incomparable Michael Childers. Tonight, Michael takes us on a journey through his extraordinary career in working with legendary entertainers and on awardwinning film and theatrical productions. Tonight is also about the journey of the individuals and families that we serve. Your support tonight will ease the journey of nearly 3,000 men, women and children in the Coachella Valley who depend on JFS for support. Your support tonight means that Valley residents have access to low cost mental health counseling, teens can receive substance abuse counseling, and seniors don’t have to wait in 100 degree heat for a bus ride to the doctor. Your support will help hundreds of local school children receive counseling to succeed in school and assist homebound seniors in maintaining their independence. This night would not have been possible without the efforts of some of the desert’s most extraordinary leaders: Annette Bloch, Helene Galen, Barbara Keller, Harold Matzner, Barbara Fromm, and Terri Ketover. Their vision, determination and guidance have been critical to the event’s remarkable success. Of course, thank you to Michael for making a magical “one night only” last six years (and counting). We are extremely grateful to all the performers who have so unselfishly volunteered their time and their talents. Last, but certainly not least, to all the individuals who worked or volunteered behind the scenes, we offer our deepest appreciation and sincere gratitude. Warmest regards,

ED GUBMAN

I am amazed at how One Night Only has built into this amazing show with a community that seem to love it more every year. This show is only made possible by the dedicated work of dozens of people and organizations. But in particular, I would like to thank Jewish Family Service of the Desert, Ed Gubman and the Board of Directors for their constant support for the last few years. I cannot say enough great things about my co-chairs who never let the event, nor me, down. They are extraordinary women and men: Annette Bloch, Helene Galen, Harold Matzner, Barbara Fromm, Barbara Keller and Terri Ketover. They are my team, I love them and they brought in more sponsorships this year than ever. Bravo to all of you! One of the highlights for the major donors is the cast party given every year the night before the event, which is star-studded and great fun. David Kaplan and Glenn Ostergaard and especially David Lee and Mark Nichols have been so generous in their support in the past as well as this year’s celebrated hostess Helene Galen. I’m so lucky to have the most extraordinary creative team with our director Calvin Remsberg and our new music director, John McDaniel. This year I'd like to thank Todd Marker, Hal Asher, Bill Nicholson and Mercury Film & Television and the terrific artists who dedicated their time – Loretta Devine, Sam Harris, and Gary Shaw – for making our radio and television commercials so successful. And always, to Tim Hanlon at Wells Fargo Bank. Without Wells Fargo, this event would not exist. And a special thanks to my friend Frank Jones at Palm Springs Life Magazine. Of course the major ingredients for a great successful show are the extraordinarily talented performers from Hollywood and New York who donate their time and spectacular talent to this show. Your talents make this world a better place.

Sincerely yours,

ay D r e c n e p S In the three years since the release of his debut recording Vagabond, vocalist songwriterpianist Spencer Day has spent some time in the uncomfortable places where light and clarity disappear into the mysteries of uncertainty. He survived the journey, and he’s come back with a story to tell and a wiser perspective about himself and the world. That story – rooted in his own experience, yet filled with revelations and truths that are universal to any human being who has ever put his or her heart at risk – is captured in his just-released album, The Mystery of You. Filled with stylistic nuances that range from smoky noir to Latin jazz to surf guitar to Middle Eastern and Asian melodies, The Mystery of You tracks the sometimes exhilarating, sometimes harrowing arc of a romantic relationship from passionate beginning to painful demise to enlightened aftermath. More than just a survivor’s tale, the album is Spencer’s affirmation to anyone within the sound of his voice that navigating the human experience is an ongoing balancing act. Jewish Family Service of the Desert extends it appreciation to Jewish Federation of the Desert for their unwavering support of our work. Their support enables us to provide vital social services to men women and children in need in the Coachella Valley this year.

The art of performance draws our eyes to the stage

Our community's commitment to arts and culture says a lot about where we live. Theater brings us together from the moment the lights go down and the curtains come up. Michael Childers and JFS, we applaud this production.
