On March 2, 1917, Desi Arnaz was born into an influential family in Cuba. His life took a dramatic turn after the 1933 Cuban revolution. He immigrated to the United States, eventually finding success as a musician and actor. Born in Jamestown, NY, Lucille Ball’s work as a fashion model in New York City eventually led her to Hollywood where she became an increasingly successful actress. The fateful meeting of these two glamorous young co-stars on a Hollywood film set would change the future of the entertainment industry.

Together, they were know to millions as Lucy & Ricky Ricardo on television’s all-time comedy classic I Love Lucy. Off-screen, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were very much a home and family-loving couple who enjoyed a seemingly idyllic life at their San Fernando Valley country ranch before their enormous show business success made them head of their own Desilu Studios.

This sensitive and absorbing documentary details the circumstances which brought the immortal twosome together and ultimately drove them apart. The film features family movies along with insightful interviews with Lucie, Desi Jr., and other family members, business associates, and celebrity friends. Lucie Arnaz has starred on the Broadway stage in They Are Playing Our Song, Lost In Yonkers, Grace And Glorie and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels; in First National companies of Seesaw, Whose Life Is It Anyway?, Social Security, My One And Only and Pippin; and in the London premiere of Witches Of Eastwick. She has appeared on television in The Lucie Arnaz Show, Sons And Daughters, The Black Dahlia, The Mating Season, Washington Mistress, and Here’s Lucy; on the big screen in The Jazz Singer, Down To You, Second Thoughts and Billy Jack Goes To Washington. Lucie was Executive Producer of the I Love Lucy 50TH Anniversary Special and Lucy & Desi: A Home Movie. She produced two CDROMS, and recorded two albums, Just in Time and Latin Roots. On behalf of the men, women and children served by Jewish Family Service of the Desert (JFS), thank you for joining us for a truly special event, Lucy & Desi: A Home Movie. We are honored to have Lucie Arnaz share clips from her moving Emmy®Award winning film with us. We first became acquainted with Lucie when she appeared in Michael Childers’ 2012 production of One Night Only. When Lucie and her husband, renowned actor Laurence Luckinbill, moved to Palm Springs, she graciously lent her support to our work on a number of occasions. Many of us have had an emotional connection to Lucie and her family for decades. We still laugh at her parents’ immortal television series. We watched Lucie and her brother Desi Jr. grow up on their mother’s television series Here’s Lucy. We’ve applauded Lucie’s artistic triumphs in the critically acclaimed film The Jazz Singer and on Broadway in They’re Playing Our Song, among many others. This past year, we cheered as she soared to new heights (literally) in Pippin. Now Lucie and Larry are our neighbors. They share our pride in our community’s achievements and concern for our challenges. Thank you, Lucie, for once again supporting the critical work of JFS. Your support tonight will have a direct impact on the more than 5,000 Coachella Valley residents JFS will serve this year. Our clients depend on JFS for low cost mental health counseling, senior care and transportation, emergency financial and food assistance, in-school counseling and substance abuse education for local children, special programs for the Jewish community, and other services. We also would like to thank the committee members who worked so hard to put on this event and the volunteers who helped make it possible. Patrick Evans has been the Chief Meteorologist for CBS Local 2 for over a decade. You can see Patrick at 5:30 PM, 6:30 PM, 11:00 PM on CBS Local 2, and at 6:45 PM hosting “Eye on the Desert” and taking care of the weather duties on KDFX Fox 11 at 10:00 PM. Patrick serves on the Family YMCA of the Desert Board, and previously served on the boards of the California Desert Chorale, United Way, and the Desert Symphony. He dedicates time to the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center, Soroptimist Club Dessert Derby and the Cathedral City Meatball Festival. In honor of his father, Patrick started an italian sausage company called Fulvio’s Foods which delivers to over 20 restaurants throughout the Coachella Valley.
