Hello There I don’t quite believe I am having to write February’s magazine introduction already - this year seems to be flying by however in a very positive way for JCI Sheffield which I am pleased about. January saw us kick off the month with our new public speaking club. Charlotte Southern who was Public Speaking Champion for UK in 2014 really got us working our skills and gaining new knowledge on speaking to an audience. Our regular Networking Wednesday event saw some new people attend and got us lined up some fantastic new trainers for later in the year as well. The big one for us this January was Inspiration day, which was a fantastic days event which we held at South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue HQ in Sheffield. Our theme was ‘fire is catching; spark your inspiration’ and we couldn’t have chosen a better venue than this. We were lucky enough to be able to attend a tour of the working station floor as well and got to see the equipment and find out how our fire fighters support Sheffield and surrounding areas. Martin Haigh and Simon Bucknull were our two fantastical inspirational speakers for the day. Martin and his business http://www.lattitude7.co.uk took us through some top tips for motivation and how to ook at things in a different way. I am hoping we can develop our relationship with Martin further in Sheffield and offer some other training events with him through out the year. Simon (www.simonbucknall.com) took us through some fantastic ways to help us tell our own personal stories and share our love of JCI as an organisation. Listening to Simon definitely gave me food for thought when it comes to telling my own personal journey within this amazing organisation. The feedback from Inspiration Day has been really great and I thank Neal, Mark and Ryan for their hard work and effort they put in on the Conference Organising Committee. I have also been lucky to celebrate 2015 with Barnsley and Rotherham JCI chapters this month. Barnsley Annual Dinner had a Downton Abbey theme which suited 2015 President Tracy Anderson as she does enjoy the elegance and glamour of the show. Rotherham’s Annual Dinner had a Las Vegas theme this year and was full of playing cards. 2015 President Charlotte Southern and her team had worked very hard on decorating the rooms. I had a fantastic time at both events. I would like to take this opportunity to say well done and congratulations to both Tracy and Charlotte on amazing years as well as wishing all the best to Jo Mackfall 2016 President JCI Barnsley and Fiona Silvester 2016 President JCI Rotherham on your coming year - it is a great pleasure to be working along side of you both. Well that pretty much wraps up January. I am looking forward to seeing you in at some of our awesome events in February. Gareth

JCI Launches Peace is Possible Campaign JCI officially launched Peace is Possible, a global peace initiative, by holding a Peace Forum during the 2016 January Board Meeting. The campaign will work to mobilize young people worldwide to create awareness, advocate, take action and commit to an everlasting world peace.

Another individual working to reduce poverty in order to create peace around the world is Theresa Carrington, Founder and CEO of The Blessing Basket Project.

In a world filled with violence, terrorism and injustice, the idea of peace to many has become merely just a vision as these unsettling acts continue to affect innocent people in communities around the globe. For an organization founded on the vision of the establishment of a permanent and everlasting world peace, violence serves as a reminder of how relevant and necessary JCI and other like-minded organizations are in today’s society.

Carrington spoke to the audience about her organization and how her approach to peace is not through charity but by creating entrepreneurship opportunities for those living in poverty. The artisan entrepreneurs are then connected to the people around the world purchasing their products, creating peaceful dialogue.

For that reason, in 2016 JCI will seek to start a conversation that will foster an environment where shared collaboration and open dialogue can occur between all sectors of society, making peace more than just a vision but a possibility. During the Peace Forum held in St. Louis, USA four leaders from different peace and diversity organizations from the community discussed the barriers and solutions to the greatest challenges we face on our mission to achieve an everlasting world peace. JCI Secretary General Arrey Obenson moderated the discussion, digging deeper into how we as not only individuals but also communities can make peace possible. “Don’t keep your values at home, share them with your community,” said Faizan Syed, Executive Director of the St. Louis Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Syed strongly focused on the idea that individuals can’t change the world overnight but are able to by creating conversation; this conversation will be transferred to others and eventually those voices will become a global movement for change. But another untapped and often forgotten sector of society that can help to mobilize peace is the business sector. “If we create jobs, we provide solutions for peace,” said Ana Romero-Lizana, Director of International Business Development for the World Trade Center Saint Louis. Romero-Lizana talked to the audience about a variety of topics surrounding small and medium-sized businesses and how they play a role in the creation of peace. She emphasized how creating positions in businesses opens a door of opportunity, lifting individuals out of poverty and restoring their sense of human dignity. By restoring human dignity in individuals all around the world we will begin to see it preserved for future generations to come.

“Peace begins with human connections,” said Carrington.

One other crucial topic of the forum discussion was the idea of more diverse and sustainable communities and how they are crucial to making peace possible. “We must be an inclusive society in order to establish peace,” said Justin Raymundo, Director of Programs and Communications for the Diversity Awareness Partnership. Raymundo believes that peace is created by increasing awareness, facilitating engagement and providing education about diversity and inclusion. Whether it is starting a new local project in your community, sharing JCI’s history and vision of peace or encouraging like-minded organizations to join the movement, we must encourage young people to start the conversation and advocate for peace in their communities today. We as individuals need to begin respecting the differences that reside within our diverse global community, transcending the sovereignty of nations. But most importantly, we need to stop waiting for peace to happen and Just Act! Start a conversation on social media by sharing the idea that #PeaceIsPossible.

Deputy’s Corner January despite being one of the longest months in the year to me felt like a blink and it’s gone. Which makes me a little sad as I’ve had a fantastic start to the year two gala dinners celebrating a great 2015 with our neighbors JCI Barnsley and JCI Rotherdam; but also JCI Inspiration day!

JCI Barnsleys Annual Dinner was Downton Abbey themed and the guys n gals in Barnsley did not disappoint! It was a lovely evening celebrating Tracy Anderson’s year - Barnsley have a lot to be proud of from 2015 with hosting National Convention and winning a few awards. I’m really looking forward to Jo Mackfall’s year as President in 2016 I know she’ll do Barnsley proud! And three weeks after JCI Barnsley dinner we got to don the glam again in Rotherham celebrating Charlotte Scothern’s fantastic year as 2015 President by having a vegas themed night. We got to place bets on roulette table as well as black jack (not for real money!) What a brilliant year Charlotte’s had leading Rotherham to victories in all the regional public speaking competitions and picking up awards at National level. We also got to see the chains being handed over to Fiona Silvester who I know will have a brilliant year. Fi was the first friendly face that greeted me at my first JCI Sheffield event a few years ago and although now in Rotherham she is still ever present in Sheffield and we’re all looking forward to seeing what Rotherham will get up to in 2016. JCI Inspiration day! What. A. Day! Hosted in our beautiful city of Sheffield and arranged by Gareth, Myself, Ryan and Mark. It was a day packed with inspirational talks, engaging conversations with National Board members and also getting excited for 2016 with members from all across the country! After hearing two fantastic talks from Michael Haigh and Simon Bucknall I’m well and truly hyped for 2016! I’m really proud of the event we put on and what has made all the planning and hard work worth it was hearing that everyone who attended is now ready to smash 2016!

Meet National Board As a member of JCI Sheffield you get the opportuntiy to build your network throughout not only Sheffield but around the UK and the world. In this new feature we will be talking to a member of the JCI UK National Board so that you can understand who does what role, a little about them and what their goals are for the coming year.

What advice would you give to members who are thinking to take on roles within their local council?

Name

If you could choose one national JCI event to attend in 2016 which would you choose?

Katie Jackson Local Chamber JCI Sheffield How long have you been a JCI member? 4 years What made you become a JCI member? To meet new people and develop my personal and professional skills What is your role on National Board? National Community Director What made you want to take on this role? I wanted to find out what it is like on the National Board as I have spent the last 4 years on a local level. I also love community and what it entails so it really appealed to me. What positions have you held within JCI prior to National Board? JCI Sheffield Sports and Social Director 2012, Personal Development Director 2013, Business and Partnerships Director 2015. JCI Rotherham General Director 2014, JCI UK Deputy Marketing Director 2013.

Do it! you will not regret it and you will learn a lot about yourself and will gain a lot of new skills.

That is a tough one. I would have to say LEAP Academy, the Leadership Excellence in Action Program - as it is one not to be missed and it is suitable for anyone from any walk of life. I’m pleased to see it will take place again in August this year. Do you have a goal for 2016? Support local chambers with their community activities during the year and develop their skills in this area. I will also be planning my wedding in 2017, which will be a big goal this year! If you have any questions for Katie regarding Community for JCI UK please don’t hesitate to get in touch via email at katie.jackson@jciuk.org.uk

Charity Partners 2016

Cathedral Archer Project Lent Appeal One of our charity partners for 2016 the Cathedral Archer Project are launching their new Lent Appeal! The appeal challenges people to give up something for 40 days, such as chocolate, coffee or even taxi’s to help raise funds and awareness for homeless people around Sheffield. This year we here at JCI Sheffield will be taking part. 2016 President Gareth Carson will be giving up chocolate, Immediate Past President Mark Smith will be giving up McDonalds, Deputy President Neal Stirk will be giving up crisps and Marketing Director Ryan Pilkington will be giving up take aways! What do you think you would choose? The Lent Appeal begins on Wednesday 10th February and we want you to join us in taking part! So what is Lent? Lent is the period of forty days which comes before Easter in the Christian calendar, traditionally a time of fasting and reflection. It is preceded by Shrove Tuesday and begins with Ash Wednesday. But instead of challenging you to fast for 40 days could you give a luxury item up and donate what you would spend to help homeless and vulnerable people in Sheffield? Could you challenge your family, friends or office to join you? The money you save and donate will make a huge difference to the people we work with who have very little. Here are a few ideas you might like to try to get you inspired! Take a flask into work instead of buying a daily takeaway coffee? Packing a lunch to work rather than nipping into town on your lunch break? Swapping to a cheaper brand of tea or coffee? How about giving up chocolate, wine or takeaways? How about riding the bike or walking to work instead of driving? Giving up something for 40 days is easier than sleeping on the streets for 40 days. Need to feel inspired? On the following page is a case study done by the Cathedral Archer Project. Penny received the care and support of the charity and you can read her inspiring and touching story. For more information on how you can get involved with the Cathedral Archer Project then head to their website www.archerproject.org.uk or head to our website www.jcisheffield.org.uk for more information on how you can get involved with us! Case Study: Penny When Penny first came to the Cathedral Archer Project at the end of 2009 she was sleeping in a tent and surviving by drinking all the time. She was angry and aggressive, very noisy and disruptive. Penny had medical issues as well as being malnourished and was in desperate need of accommodation. Penny started attending the project regularly and worked 1-1 with Sam, our Project Worker. Initially, it was difficult to find Penny temporary accommodation due to rent arrears but with support these were brought under control and accommodation secured. She was accompanied to various medical appointments and joined in the women’s group. Penny’s attitude started to change and she wanted to get more involved. She started to take part in the walking group and asked to join in the volunteer programme. As a client volunteer, Penny had to have boundaries and confidentiality training as well as learning about the job. She had to attend on time, and for the first time was trusted to take on responsibilities. For Penny this was life changing, she developed a sense of pride in her work and her self-esteem grew, her appearance improved and she wanted to learn more. It has not been a straightforward journey. Penny has had to learn to manage her anger, needed space to chill out if she wasn’t coping and access to staff to support her. She still needs support with some of her medical appointments but her role as a volunteer has grown. Most days Penny is in the project, looking after the lounge area but not just doing the role but helping train new volunteers in the right way to do things and to the highest standards. Penny is looking for new challenges and is starting to learn about work in other areas of the project making her invaluable. Penny will continue need our support but she is also adding value every day. Client volunteers make up 47% of the volunteers that help run the Cathedral Archer Project. They are all on a 2 year development plan. Volunteers deliver over 200 hours of support each week to the project, equivalent of approximately 5 members of staff. They help everywhere, from serving the food and washing up, to doing the laundry, keeping the lounge clean, running reception and supporting the project staff. Help the Cathedral Archer Project continue it’s amazing work by volunteering, donating or raising awareness. Join the Lent Appeal on the 10th February and help save a homless persons life.

JCI World Congress 2016.

Quebec Canada

JCI World Congress is a chance to have the full JCI experience. Each year members from around the world meet for World Congress. An event where you can meet new people, experience a new culture, take part in training sessions, impact the community and be an active citizen! This year it will be held in Quebec Canada!

There are so many ways to describe Québec City and its distinctive personality: it’s a smart, business-savvy town, a cultural hub and an ideal place for walking, fine dining, and leisure all year round. With its unique blend of European and North American culture, Québec City belongs on every discerning traveler’s destination list. Add our cultural vibrancy, robust economy, urban makeovers, international-caliber events, and stature within the Francophone world, and you’ll see why Québec City is ideally positioned for today and the future. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and cradle of French-speaking North America, Québec is a modern city with a unique and exciting history. With a population of 677,000 in the greater Québec City region (95 percent of whom speak French), the province’s capital celebrated its 400th anniversary in 2008. In 2013, Forbes Magazine named Québec City second among the most affordable cities. It is a destination of choice for business and pleasure travel. Convention Centre Located in the heart of the city, a few steps from Old Québec and Parliament Hill, the Québec City Convention Centre offers a place to meet and exchange for more than 200,000 visitors every year. The Centre offers delegates a unique and exceptional experience. Inaugurated in 1996, the Centre received a facelift in 2014 and is now ready to welcome you in a high-technology environment. As well, its commitment to sustainable development allowed the Centre to become certified Silver LEED-EB (existing building) and BOMA BEST, Level 3. Airport The Québec City Jean Lesage International Airport – YQB – is located a mere 15 minutes from downtown Québec and the Québec City Convention Centre. Welcoming close to 2 million passengers every year, the airport serves several international destinations, with daily flights to Europe and the United States. As its activities have grown, the airport last year launched a major project to expand the terminal and modernize its facilities. Rest assured, the work in no way impacts the comfort of the airport’s visitors, and its activities continue as usual.

Weather The province of Québec has the distinction of having four welldefined seasons, each of which offers different landscapes and, of course, different temperatures. In November, the temperature should fluctuate between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius (41 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit). The air will be dry and cold. The leaves will have started to fall, creating a magnificent carpet of red, orange and yellow. Wool sweaters, a jacket, boots and a light hat are suggested. If you plan to visit the city by foot, remember to wear comfortable footwear! We can’t wait and we hope to see you there too! JCI Sheffield have bursaries available for our members. To apply or for more information please email our 2016 Growth and Membership Director Brogan O’Callaghan at brogan.ocallaghan@jcisheffield.org.uk. Inspiration Day 2016

When do you feel most inspired?

Whether you prefer scenic strolls in the countryside, listening to TED Talks, or collating images for your aspirational Pinterest board, there are many ways to keep yourself motivated. How about spending 8 hours of your weekend inside South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service Command Headquarters? On the 30th January, I attended JCI UK’s Inspiration Day, hosted by JCI Sheffield at the aforementioned fire station. The JCI UK President, Sarah Beckwith, kicked the day off with an enthusiastic speech, then presented awards for volunteering achievements. We had an informal chat with the National Board, about their plans for JCI in 2016 (spoiler alert: it’s going to be amazing). We even had a tour of the station, and learnt all about Hooligan Tools, breathing apparatus...and the (fortunate) ease at which firemen can break down your front door. As the name suggests, Inspiration Day was also packed with motivational presentations and personal development sessions. Here are the highlights... Positive Sparks with Martin Haigh (Professional Trainer, Lattitue7) When faced with a problem, do you see a crisis or an opportunity? Martin Haigh showed us how to see the bigger picture, and how to stay motivated when our positivity is low. Martin provided us with fascinating examples of positive thinking. Did you know that athletes who give themselves a pep talk prior to racing are more likely to outperform those who don’t? Or that Tabasco manufacturer, Edmund McIlhenny, used discarded cologne bottles to distribute his sauce? Wildfire Storytelling with Simon Bucknall (Director & Public Speaking Expert, The Art Of Connection) Everyone’s a storyteller. Sure, we may not be on Jane Austen’s level, but if a colleague asks, “What did you get up to at the weekend?” on a Monday morning, we can usually regale them with an interesting enough tale (especially if you spent the majority of your Saturday in a fire station). Simon Bucknell taught us how to reframe interview questions and presentation topics into an engaging story, by focusing on ‘The 4 Big Cs’: the Context, the

Challenge, the Critical Moment and the Consequence. This engaging session was packed with interactive exercises to spark out storytelling abilities, including naming as many countries as possible, and enacting a chat show conversation. We’re ready for you, Graham Norton! Introduction to Event Management with Mark Smith (Director of Operations and Retail, SAFE@LAST) How much effort do you need to invest into planning a large-scale event? “A lot,” according to Mark Smith. The JCI UK Finance Director highlighted the potential pitfalls of event management - from forgetting contingency plans, to failing to ensure there are enough First Aiders at hand. A fountain of event managerial knowledge, Mark shared personal examples of his own success stories and lessons learnt. Completing a risk assessment form has never been this exciting! Inspiration Day certainly lived up to its name. Many thanks to JCI Sheffield for organising such a fantastic event (Mark Smith obviously taught you well!). -Hannah Woodcock, JCI Leeds Deputy President

Marketing Academy returns this month on the 5th and the 6th of March! The academy has changed from past years to ensure that we enable you to share your brand and your chamber even more effectively and efficiently. So what’s changed? First off the Academy has been given Find out more information and book your places online on a whole new lease of life with a whole new look as can be Eventbrite and www.jcisheffield.org.uk or www.jciuk.org.uk seen with a sleeker design for the banners and posters for the academy. If you have any other questions regarding JCI UK Marketing Academy then get in touch with me via email Secondly with thanks to fellow National Board members ryan.pilkington@jciuk.org.uk Ben Hawley and Katie Jackson, both of whom are marketing experts, we have overhauled the training schedule and Thanks! syllabus to make it even more relevant to members. The Ryan training for the academy has been put together in a style that is both informative, interactive and functional. From looking back at the past years of the academy and looking forward we chose the points of marketing that we think are vital for brands and businesses both JCI related and unrelated. With the training syllabus spanning blogging, social media, websites, video and photos, strategies and more we aim to cover all bases. The weekend isn’t simply for JCI members or Marketing Directors. The training will be useful no matter what your marketing knowledge or background or experience. The digital world is ever evolving and if we don’t use the tools we have at our disposal effectively no matter how big or small the business or organization it runs the risk of being left out and eventually forgotten. Part of JCI or not, the skills and knowledge you will receive during the weekend will be valuable to all businesses and organizations. As Marketing Director for JCI UK this year, I want to ensure that this academy becomes one that people continue to talk about long after they graduate and recommend to their peers for the brilliant experience they had. For only £59 (JCI members) and £129 (non members) for two full days of training including your food for both days it’s a bargain! The venue for the academy is the BPP in Birmingham enabling people from around the UK access to this stunning location. All you have to do is arrange your travel and accommodation. The hotels we recommend is The Royal Angus at a price of £80 per room for the two nights (based on two people sharing)! The hotel is only a 10 minute walk from the academy venue with brilliant rooms and facilities too. I hope to see you all there at what promises to be a JCI UK Marketing Academy like no other. Come along and meet, share, grow and develop with us at this years Marketing Academy! Places are filling up fast so don’t hestitate to get your place!

What is ACE? Volunteering in your local community is a fantastic and very rewarding thing to do and with it you learn a lot about your local area, help those in need and get that warm fuzzy feeling having done a great thing. We thoroughly enjoy helping local charities and we’ve met a lot of great people that way. At JCI we like to celebrate the hard work and brilliant impact our members have had in the local community and we achieved this by starting ACE. ACE stands for Active Citizen Experience and in short is a way of recognising the hard work of JCI members in our local communities through volunteering. So how does it work? Simply if you do 8 hours volunteering with a local charity in your community you can log them on ACE. Simply log the hours of volunteering you’ve done. A record of these is then kept and at the end of the year is added together and you are then recognised for all your hard work

started ACE a few years ago and said “I created the concept of ACE a number of years after a review of our Local Secret Santa Appeal. A number of people wanted to get involved and support the campaign, but couldn’t necessarily commit so much time just before Christmas. I started thinking, ‘why can’t they choose what they want to do?’ JCI members are very giving with their time and not just through our or- ganised activates, so I thought they deserved acknowledgement for everything they do to make their community a better place. This is where ACE came in. Whether it is taking part in a Local or National JCI Community event, or getting involved in events, which are per- sonal to them, they can receive recognition for their efforts. In short, volunteering is extremely rewarding and those who do it should be recognised for it so do volunteer, get logging those hours and stand up and be proud of the hard work you do!

If you need any advice on this or want to learn more about ACE email the 2016 President Gareth Carson via email at gareth.carson@jcisheffield.org.uk or Stephanie Smith the 2016 JCI Sheffild Social and Relations alternatively you can email the JCI UK Community Director was recently awarded a Gold certificate by Katie Director Katie Jackson at katie.jackson@jciuk.org.uk Jackson at the JCI UK Inspiration Day we hosted in Sheffield for doing over 90 hours of volunteering in 2015. Mark Smith our Immediate Past President has always championed ACE and said “Volunteering has always been an important and big part of my life for many years. I think its great that I have been able to log my volunteering hours that I have undertaken both within JCI and external to JCI. As well as working for SAFE@ LAST children charity, I also volunteer in a variety of roles for the organisation - I am a trained helpline volunteer and do several duties per month usually on the evening or at weekends, responding to telephone calls, text messages or web chats from children at risk through running away. I’ve helped out at several of the charity events such by taking on a steward role for example at the half marathon. I have been able to log hours I have done volunteering on my local amateur theatre group executive committee such as the time I spent on creating them a new website and of course have logged many hours in my roles at JCI, delivering training for example.” ACE is the brainchild of JCI Senator Katie Ogley who
