Hello There Well it’s been another great month for JCI Sheffield. We have had some fantastic events this month. One of my highlights was the ‘How to Successfully Win an Argument’ which Mark Smith and Charlotte Scothern trained for us. It was all about debating skills and practice which helps people understand how to debate at JCI competitions as well as using those skills in every day life. The thing that stuck out for me the most was the journey that I saw people take on that evening. I was incredibly proud of everyone who turned up and how they took part in the training for feeling very nervous at the beginning of the evening to taking the steps to having a full debate at the end of the evening. As you may have noticed JCI Sheffield annual dinner has been launched now and will be held at the Holiday Inn Royal Victoria on 8th October with the the theme being Black Tie and Diamonds. It’s great to see so many people already book their tickets at the limited special rate however there are still some places left so don’t hesitate to book. I extend a warm welcome to everyone who reads this publication; you dont have to be a member to attend and it’s also a great opportunity for networking on the evening as well as finding out how we have been achieving awesome this year. This weekend I am heading up the Leadership Excellent In Action Programme (LEAP) in Birmingham. It’s is a great honour to have had the opportunity to be the Conference Organising Committee Director this year and I would like to thank the team for working so hard; I know the event will be a great success for all involved. There are still a couple of places if anyone would like to attend this great event. The event was an idea that Dan Senter a past JCI Sheffield president and senator set up 5 years ago and it’s great to see this has become part of the range of national academies that are run by JCI UK. This month has seen us launch our Business Academy bookings as well which will take place in September. Mark Smith and the team have worked extremely hard on setting up and an amazing programme on which you will learn new skills about running and managing your own business. There is even an opportunity at the end to put some of those skills into practice. You can find more out about the programme in this magazine and I would encourage you to book now to not miss your place as this will be a very popular weekend. With prices starting from £25 as a member rate you can’t go wrong. Well that’s all from me this month and looking forward to what the next few months hold for us. Deputy’s Corner Hello! As I write this the sun is shining, it’s lovely and warm and we’ve got dare I say weather that feels like summer. Hopefully this will keep up for the weekend.

So what have I been up to since I was last hear? Well at the start of month I’ve had the honour and privilege of going to Kungalv in Sweden and attending the JCI European Academy. And what an academy it is, anyone who’s been will know exactly what I’m saying. The academy is designed to prepare you for being a local president giving you the skills to lead by learning about the different styles and personality types people have and adjusting your approach accordingly. You work extremely hard here and I would love to tell you all exactly what happens but it would ruin the experience for those going in future. But what I will say is I’ve had the best experience meeting Jaycee’s from all over Europe and made friends that I know will be instrumental next year. I would also like to say a huge huge well done to all of those on the Conference Organising Comitee and the trainers for the fantastic job they did on the academy. For anyone thinking of going, just go! Don’t debate it just go! If however you can’t wait until next year go to LEAP in Birmingham 19-21st of August it’s a life changing experience and I had the honour of going last year which is an amazing weekend and one that pushes you outside of your comfort zone (in a good way!). I’ve also been stepping up work on the Annual Dinner which is on the 8th of October you can now book tickets on Eventbrite. These are selling fast and promises to be an amazing night celebrating the brilliant year we’ve had achieving awesome with Gareth. We’ve also been working very hard here on the JCI Sheffield Business Academy. I’m really excited by this and Mark Smith has been working extremely hard to ensure its going to be an amazing event and one that prepares the delegates to take a new business or start a new business and take it to the next level. Run Your Way to Success Running has spiked in popularity and with more and more of us opting to dust off our trainers and hit the Peak District. Thanks to the rise of wearable technology such as Fit Bit’s, GPS trackers and ultra high spec sports wear it’s becoming more and more intricate with how we keep our bodies on top form. But running has more than just physical benefits. Running allows the mind to settle too. Dusting off those trainers can double your health benefits. Thanks to our lives being more and more hectic and with technology becoming more and more portable and integrated within our lives running has allowed people to step away from the busy 9 to 5 job. All of this has a bad affect on the mind. It makes the mind feel clogged with things buzzing about giving us the stressed sensation we all know and hate. If you want to escape the stressed sensation of the daily grind try running in a natural surrounding such as forests, woods or the Peak District. Research has found that thanks to our natural and historical positive response to nature running around these areas has amazing benefits to our mind. Here are 5 key ways running helps our mind: • • • • •

JCI World Congress 2016 is not far away! For 2016 JCI Canada will be hosting the congress in Quebec City. In this feature we will be sharing with you information about the event, the highlights, information on Quebec and more! There are so many ways to describe Québec City and its distinctive personality: it’s a smart, businesssavvy town, a cultural hub and an ideal place for walking, fine dining, and leisure all year round. Accomodation For JCI World Congress 2016 there are a host of hotels avilable to suit your needs. There are three recommended hotels along with near by options too. The Hilton Quebec is the Headquarter Hotel with Hôtel Château Laurier and Château Frontenac being the two top recommended options for travellers and are within walking distance of the conference centre. Weather The province of Québec has the distinction of having four well-defined seasons, each of which offers different landscapes and, of course, different temperatures. In November, the temperature should fluctuate between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius (41 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit). The air will be dry and cold. The leaves will have started to fall, creating a magnificent carpet of red, orange and yellow. Wool sweaters, a jacket, boots and a light hat are suggested. If you plan to visit the city by foot, remember to wear comfortable footwear! Programme With Chris Hadfield, the first Canadian astronaut to walk in space, the Molson Brothers, entrepreneuers and more to be confirmed be prepared for some inspirational stories that will be sure to light your fire. Client pitches, wedding speeches, amateur dramatics - we’ve all had to speak in public. Yet the nerves still kick in. Your heart beats faster, your palms sweat and you quickly assess the exits for a lastminute escape. If only you knew some simple tricks to calm your stage fright... On the 21st July, I attended JCI Sheffield’s workshop, ‘Making the most of the spotlight: stagecraft for public speaking.’ Led by the amazing Liz Yoxall, this engaging session focused on practical tips for improving stage presence, voice control and posture. Liz has a very impressive resume, including: Musical Director of a community choir, singing teacher and actress. Throughout the session, she offered anecdotes about her own experience on the stage and was more than happy to answer questions. After reciting some tricky tongue twisters, Liz encouraged us to sing a catchy ditty en masse, instructing us to change the tempo and volume with each round. Surprisingly, we sounded pretty good (is it too late to apply for Britain’s Got Talent?), and learnt how to project our voice with confidence. In order to visualise our breathing, we created bubbles using jumbo packs of bubble solution. As Liz explained, regulated breaths are vital for voice control. To exercise our facial muscles, we alternatively impersonated a roaring lion and a pinch-faced mouse. After a few minutes, we felt the results – and saw the less-than-flattering photos on JCI Sheffield’s Twitter feed... Overall, the workshop was extremely enjoyable, and I’ll definitely use the tips for future presentations. Right now, I need to practice my vocal warm-ups (in private, for the sake of my co-workers’ ears).

In this monthly feature we will be talking to a member of the JCI UK National Board so that you can understand who does what role, a little about them and what their goals are for this year. Name Ryan Pilkington Local Chamber: JCI Sheffield How long have you been a JCI member? 2 years What made you become a JCI member? I joined to build my confidence and learn new skills. It’s important for me to always be learning, growing and developing both personally and professionally. What is your role on National Board? Marketing Director What made you want to take on this role? I was the 2015 Communications Director for JCI Sheffield and I wanted to take on another challenge. That of a JCI UK national role. I wanted to build on the marketing resources and help share the message of JCI further. What positions have you held within JCI prior to National Board? 2015 JCI Sheffield Communications Director What advice would you give to members who are thinking to take on roles within their local council? Take a chance. It’s a journey where you will develop both personally and professionally more than you will ever expect to. I have learnt skills and knowledge that I will use for the rest of my life and career. Think about what you want to get out of the role and do some research about what roles are available on your local council and talk to your local President and Deputy President too to get their advice.

If you could choose one national JCI event to attend in 2016 which would you choose? For me it would be National Convention. This is always one of my favourite events in the JCI calendar and is always one that creates amazing memories and friendships. Do you have a goal for 2016? Catherdal Archer Project Sleep Out for Charity JCI Sheffield are proud to be supporting the Cathedral Archer Project Sleep Out which will be taking place on Friday, 2 September at 19:30 - Saturday, 3 September. Here at JCI we love being able to help those less fortunate than ourselves and we would like you to support them too. This is a unique experience of sleeping out in the centre of Sheffield. Are you up to the challenge? The Archer Project create a safe environment next to the Cathedral where participants will sleep under the stars for the night. On the night, you will gain a small insight into sleeping rough. Everyone that takes part learns something new and has a bit of experience of what it is like to be sleeping on the streets just for one night. This is also a great opportunity to raise valuable funds for their work with the homeless and vulnerable in Sheffield. Cathedral Archer Project are asking for everyone to raise a minimum of £100 in sponsorship. Places are limited! You will need to bring your own sleeping bag, mat and warm clothes – we will provide an unforgettable experience. Here is what past participants have had to say: “The Sleep Out was so memorable. How To Stay on Top Form Staying on top form during work can be pretty tough sometimes. We all hit the highs and lows of the productive day and we have some tips to ensure that you stay on those productive highs all day. With 5 different ways of staying productive to planning all of your day to filtering your emails effectively say good bye to those hour long procrastination sessions and say hello to that new and improved (and less stressed) you. 1. Work out your work flow. It’s super easy to simply go about our day without a plan; but is this productive? Do you find yourself taking longer breaks than usual? Find yourself randomly on Facebook checking out your friends holiday snaps?

This is where your work flow chart comes in. This may be a simple task but simply plan all of your day out. All of it. All of your breaks, how long they are, take in to account your travel times and plan your day around these. If possible try to have tasks completed before you go on break. This means that during your break you can clear your head and return completely refreshed and ready to work on the next task.

2. Attention Pockets. If a plan may not work for you then try finding moments in your day when you find yourself being unproductive when you could be. So this could be checking your emails in the supermarket queue. This means that you have saved yourself some time. You don’t have to read them all before starting your next task. 3. Rethink your Connections. It’s great that we are connected like never before thanks to our technology but this can be a bitter sweet affair. Checking social media is fun and comforting but it can drain your productivity time. Look at the apps that give you constant notifications. Turn off the notifications for the apps that aren’t productivity based or beneficial to you. Don’t worry, Facebook and Twitter will still be there for when you finish work! 4. Schedule your procrastination. Coaches swear by this tip as it allows your mind to stay nimble and on point. Get yourself a kitchen timer and set if for about 25 - 30 minutes. Use this time for uninterrupted work. Once the bell rings you can set it again for 5 minutes of playing Angry Birds, checking Twitter or whatever you like. The physical timer will instantly wake you up from your task and ensure you keep alert and on task. 5 .Use the D’s. Delete, Do It Now (is it’s a 2 minute

Money, Money, Money - Paul Bamford We speak to many business owners and the business usually starts with a a vision or dream to create whatever business it may be. Many hours and blood, sweat and tears are put into getting the business up and running and usually there is no one talking to the business owners about the importance of financial services and the impact that certain scenarios can have on the business. How much revenue do you need to break even? Do you use cashflow forecasts to manage your business? Do you have enough cash reserves to survive the next three months? Undertake a monthly review of your debtors and chase late payers. Do you review your own debts on a monthly basis? Consider if there are any unplanned future financial issues that would affect the finances of your business. What services or activities are you undertaking or providing that are loss making? Do you monitor all your business operations regularly for early warning signs? Is your income seeing year on year growth, keeping pace with your outgoings? Do you consult with your business advisors on a regular basis?


My JCI Journey: Neal Stirk I joined JCI Sheffield around 3 and a half years ago as a shy, nervous and some what reserved person My journey started when I went to a Networking Event as part of the initial phase of the RISE Campaign launch stood in a corner on my phone and a senator who annoyingly the name escapes me told me about something called JCI. I went away googled it thought it sounded exactly what I wanted to do in my spare time and then quickly booked on to my first event. I nervously went to my first event (which was JCI bingo) I was greeted by the Fiona Silvester and Dan Senter I then followed them in to the event and was greeted by the most welcoming and warm hearted people who quickly made me feel at ease; I didn’t win anything at Bingo but I have made friends for life at that event. From there I carried on attending events going to as much as possible; training events, social events anything and everything. I quickly found myself wanting to do more and more and in 2014 half way through 2014 I asked to join the council team joining as a General Director helping on a couple of projects the biggest being the annual dinner. In 2015 I felt more confident and wanted to tackle bigger projects and take more responsibility and became the Community Action Director where we took on the huge challenge of supporting 4 charities and arranging the JCI Bake Off. But also I set myself the personal challenge to MC with Gareth at the Annual Dinner and speak more publicly where possible. I achieved all of this and won the award for the Most Outstanding Member in the UK 2015 on my journey. This was without doubt my toughest year and one that I’m extremely proud but I also know in my development I have come a long way. 2016 I became JCI Sheffield’s Deputy President and have so far photographed the World President, been to our Marketing Academy and have made big plans for the rest of the year. JCI is the most incredible organisation in the world; you meet people from across the globe, learn some of the best skills and achieve things that you don’t ever believe you can.
