X-FACTOR VIEWING PARTY

6-10 p.m. Jacksonville Landing Admission FREE TRACY DOT COM It’s November, and everyone knows that means we’re getting closer to Turkey Time! Give thanks by giving back to the Jacksonville community! HandsOn Jacksonville can connect you with the perfect volunteer opportunity. Tracy Dot Com can be seen every Thursday at 8:45 a.m. on FOX 30 to find out, “Are You Ready For the Weekend?”

Jacksonville’s own Rion Paige wowed everyone in her hometown, but more important, she blew away the normally abrasive X-Factor judge, Simon Cowell. Come to the Jacksonville Landing Nov. 6 for live music from 6-8 p.m., followed by an X-Factor viewing party to root on the little girl with the huge voice. I’ve been interviewing Rion at various stages of her career since she was 8 years old. Watching her blossom into the superstar she is becoming has been my personal honor.

6-9:30 p.m. Daryl Bunn Studios Admission $40

This event is special to my heart. It benefits one of my favorite places, North Florida School of Special Education. I have fallen in love with all of these kind, precious children and young adults that have a variety of disabilities, and I want to do everything to encourage you to attend this event that benefits them. The evening will include live music, wine and food tastings.

NowNov 9 “LOMBARDI” Theatre Jacksonville Admission $25

The Super Bowl named a trophy after him and now his legacy is on stage right here in the River City. Theatre Jacksonville’s latest masterpiece is based on the book “When Pride Still Mattered - A Life of Vince Lombardi,” bringing the inspirational, and internationally known, football coach’s story to life. Be warned though, the language in the locker room is for mature audiences only.

JAMMIN JASMINE SAISON RELEASE PARTY 5-10 p.m. Engine 15 Brewing Co. Admission $20 in Advance

This event is another fabulous fundraiser brought to you by Jamie and Mindy Gillis (known collectively by their celebrity couple name, JamMin). This beaches couple has been throwing craft beer parties for the past several years to help the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation. As they always do, and thanks to the generous donations of sponsors, 100 percent of the proceeds go to MDA. Your ticket includes a commemorative glass filled with JamMin Jasmine Saison, desserts, coffee and tea. Get your tickets early. It always sells out.

Nov 23 ROAR N’ SNORE CAMP OUT Catty Shack Ranch

Adult Admission $75, Children (3-11) $35

When I worked at Action News full-time, I would often go cover a Catty Shack Ranch event on the morning show. We started before the sun came up. Imagine being surrounded by cages and cages of lions, tigers, jaguars and other big cats in the pitch darkness. It was creepy and awesome at the same time! You have the opportunity this month to have the same experience this month during the bi-annual camping trip. Reservation includes campsite, nighttime feeding of the animals, dinner, bonfire with s’mores and breakfast in the morning. Reserve your spot now!

Nov 29 ART NIGHT W/ADAM & MO

8-11 p.m. 8103 Clothing Admission FREE

Are you kidding me? Two of my all-time favorite artists painting live at the same time? Um … yes, please … “color” me there! Famous beaches artists Mobarick Abdullah III and Adam Brett will be painting live and working on a live collaboration of a new T-shirt release for 8103 Clothing in Jacksonville Beach and you can come watch for free. Complimentary food and drinks will also be part of the fun.

PETANQUE AMERICA OPEN

Nov. 9-10 Fernandina Harbor Marina Petanque-America-Open.net Petanque’s popularity keeps rising in our country. But players are scattered over the 50 states and do not have many opportunities to meet, mingle and play. Last year, 256 players came from 22 states plus 11 countries attended the event. It certainly helps that the Fernandina Harbor Marina is a beautiful setting, not unlike La Ciotat on the French Mediterranean coast, where petanque started in 1907.

Be On The Look Out For

Chip Southworth

I am an artist whose foundation is in drawing and process; and my current work is a culmination of the past 25 years of creating. I have always thought of myself as a ‘painter’s painter.’ Freedom and motion are conveyed through my textural construction, yet I am more deliberate as I move outward from the base surfaces and become tight and more classical in the areas of the eyes…the gateways to the soul. I hope that this body of work shows the struggle of love, humanity and the soul as I see it.” - Chip Southworth

The lino or wood block is carefully prepared as a relief pattern, which means the areas to show ‘white’ are cut away with a knife, chisel, or sandpaper leaving the characters or image to show in ‘black’ at the original surface level. It is necessary only to ink the block and bring it into firm and even contact with the paper or cloth to achieve an acceptable print. The content would of course print “in reverse” or mirror-image.

BUZZ TAKE: ON LOCAL BBQ

WHERE TO EAT INTERNATIONALLY INSPIRED CUISINE

4 Bones Barbeque 14286 Beach Blvd., 4BonesBBQ.com

“4 Bones Barbeque is definitely a contender for the best BBQ in Jax. Already a favorite in the local food reviewer’s circles, this spot has delighted my taste buds as well! Overall, this is a great spot to customize your meat order, enjoy great service, interact with a couple of Jacksonville’s business owner’s and enjoy some amazingly fantabulous BBQ – without breaking the bank! Be sure to Like 4BB on Facebook as they continually update their wall with spontaneous daily specials!”

I love chef’s that can woo me with a pretty plate and pander to my persnickety palate with house-prepped food that really pops with flavor. I love seasonally changing menus as this ensures the freshest farm-to-table ingredients. I love great service and I am especially fond of local, owner-operated restaurants. Well Maza New American Cuisine in Atlantic Beach has successfully hit each point on the checklist – and then some. I truly just can’t emphasize enough how impressed I was with the imaginative menu, fabulous flavor profiles and friendly family service at Maza. This is the kind of place that foodies can re-visit over and over as the menu changes seasonally and are subject to the whim of whatever proteins come in fresh. And even more amazing? -- The food here is nominally priced between $7.00 to $19.00!” -Monica Stouder, BUZZ Cuisine Aficionado

Additionally this brand new, locally-owned restaurant has a sibling location off Highway Avenue that has been around for many years as well. This account of my awesome eating experience is specifically designed to highlight the Beach Boulevard location… And let me just say if sound effects could be effectively written they definitely would go something like this… nom…nom…nom!!”

SOUTHERN FARE In Jacksonville, many restaurants pay tribute to the Southeast and its culinary contributions by recreating some of our favorite comfort foods in creative new ways. We wanted to highlight a couple of our favorites with just a few words:

CHEF JOHN RIVERS

OF 4 RIVERS SMOKEHOUSE 9220 Baymeadows Rd. | 474-8377 4RSmokehouse.com BUZZ: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING IN THE FOOD INDUSTRY? JR: My first job was at The Loop Pizza Grill in San Marco, when I turned 16, and I continued working in the industry throughout college to pay my way through school. Absent of a short 20-year career in healthcare after college, the remaining years have been making food through 4 Rivers Smokehouse.

ALAN SMITH

General Manager of Table 1 330 A1A N., Ponte Vedra Beach (904) 280-5515, Table-1.com

BUZZ: Tell us a little about your location and the atmosphere at Table 1. AS: Located in beautiful Ponte Vedra Beach, Table 1 is a wonderful escape for a fun night out with friends. The staff is very personable and the restaurant is also family friendly. Our blend of upscale dining in a casual atmosphere, along with our extensive wine list and live entertainment create a dining experience you are sure to remember. BUZZ: Tell us about your favorite special. AS: Our Kobe Meatloaf is out of this world, it is topped with a huge slice of apple-wood smoked bacon and is served with rainbow green beans and whipped potatoes with truffle mushroom gravy. The Surf and Turf is a petit filet mignon and a Maryland crab cake served with sautéed spinach, roasted fingerling potato hash and a red demi. BUZZ: Tell us a little about the wines that you offer at Table 1. How many are available to your customers? AS: We offer 20 wines by the glass and have over 40 bottles of wine to choose from. Our special owner’s collection features top of the market wines and reduced prices. During Happy Hour we offer 2-4-1 specials on select wines.

BUZZ: WHAT IS THE CONCEPT FOR YOUR NEW COOKBOOK “THE SOUTHERN COWBOY”? JR: “The Southern Cowboy,” my first cookbook, will feature recipes of my favorite Southern regional dishes and some of our most popular dishes from the Smokehouse. It uncovers the history of how 4 Rivers Smokehouse came to be and shares the passion I have for food over 217 pages of recipes and photography. BUZZ: WHEN WILL YOUR NEW COOKBOOK BE AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE? WHERE CAN WE GET A COPY? JR: “The Southern Cowboy” is currently available for pre-order at 4RSmokehouse.com, but will be available for purchase in stores and on our website November 1. We’re hosting an in-store booking on Saturday, November 23 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. [at the 4 Rivers Smokehouse location]. I’ll be there to talk with guests, sign cookbooks and carve Smoked Turkey for everyone to sample. BUZZ: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE THE 4 RIVERS SMOKEHOUSE RESTAURANTS? JR: A heartfelt call in 2004 inspired me to help raise funds to offset the overwhelming cost of cancer

treatment for a six-year-old girl, and it also brought my backyard passion to new heights. For the next five years, I fired-up the smoker anytime a family, church, school or charity was in need of help. Working from my garage, our Barbecue Ministry quickly grew in popularity, which led to us bottling and selling 4R Signature BBQ Sauce, and the ultimate leap of faith to open the first 4 Rivers Smokehouse in Winter Park, Fla.

BLACK SHEEP RESTAURANT: Farm to Table, Creative, Upscale Southern Fare in Riverside. Enjoy a casual lunch downstairs, or an upscale evening on the rooftop bar (the full menu is available on the rooftop until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday). Be sure to try their Fried Green Tomatoes!

MAPLE STREET BISCUIT COMPANY: Delicious homemade biscuits and breakfast (don’t forget lunch) sandwiches. Southern food is often stereotyped by its decadence… and that is for good reason (no complaints here).Visit either their San Marco location or their NEW location at the Beach!

BUZZ: WHAT MAKES 4 RIVERS SMOKEHOUSE UNIQUE IN A TOWN LIKE JACKSONVILLE, WHERE BBQ RULES? JR: The Smokehouse is a different style of BBQ influenced greatly by my time in Texas and extensive travels in some of the BBQ meccas. All meats I smoke are influenced by the regional style I found to be the best during my travels. My brisket is from Texas and Kansas City, pulled pork from Alabama, ribs from North Carolina and Tri-tip from California. In additional to our multi-regional approach, we pride ourselves on making everything in house, including every side and item in the Sweet Shop. We don’t rely on off-site commissaries for our meats, or premade warm-andserve options for our sides. It’s all made fresh, everyday and what’s left over goes to help feed the homeless.

THE SOUL FOOD BISTRO: I think the name says it all. Enjoy finely tuned Southern BUZZ: WHAT INSPIRES YOUR COOKING? recipes in a contemporary bistro JR: My roots play a big part in my cooking. I grew up in Jacksonville and my wife is a Texan, so I environment. If you’re looking incorporate my love for southern food and Texan smoking techniques at 4 Rivers Smokehouse. With for comfort food in Jacksonville, stop into one of their locations each store opening, we’re able to impact the lives of so many through our charity work. It’s a blessing on the West Side or Atlantic Blvd.! to give and serve great food. Photo by Monica Lea Imagery

AS: Join our inner circle and receive a free appetizer when you join, a free appetizer on your one-year anniversary as a member, a free dessert or glass of wine on your birthday, along with the latest news, updates and Inner Circle exclusive offers. BUZZ: Do you host any weekly events? AS: Happy Hour is from 4-9 p.m. and 9-11 p.m., daily. During Happy Hour well drinks, domestic beer, and select wines are all 2-4-1 w/ bar bites starting at $5. BLDP=Fluid If I had to choose one adjective to describe the Braided Light Dance Project, (BLDP), it would be fluid.

OF COURSE, YOU EXPECT FLUIDITY FROM DANCERS, AFTER ALL THEY USE THEIR BODIES TO EXPRESS THEIR ART; THEY MUST BE NIMBLE AND MOVE WITH THE MUSIC. BUT THE FLUIDITY OF WHICH I SPEAK RUNS MUCH DEEPER, IT INFILTRATES THEIR RANKS, INSPIRES THEIR WORKS, AND, SOMETIMES EVEN, INFORMS LIVES. They thrive when uniting, and the pairings need not be conventional. Breaking free of preconceived concepts allows the group to increasingly tap into their creative spirits and stretch limits.

THEATRE IN THE KNOW

Premieres “The Whipping Man,” a stirring story of freedom and faith

Andy Nance GUEST EDITOR: BETH HARVEY

FROM THE UPCOMING FSCJ PRODUCTION OF “EB SCROOGE: A SOUTHERN FRIED CHRISTMAS CAROL”

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN ACTING (OVERALL) AND ALSO SPECIFICALLY IN THEATRE IN NORTHEAST FLORIDA AREA? I’ve only been acting on stage for the past five or six years. Though not officially acting, I was in radio for over twenty years. My wife is the drama teacher for the St. Johns County Center for the Arts at Murray Middle School, and whenever she’d need a bearded old goat for a play, she’d recruit me. In 2008 I decided to audition for “You Can’t Take it With You” at Limelight Theatre in St. Augustine, and got the role of Grandpa. Since then I’ve really gotten into acting. Recently I had the pleasure of working with students at Flagler College’s Theatre Department and found that quite rewarding. This past summer I was part of the troupe known as the Picolata Players at the Colonial Quarter in historic St. Augustine. It was a funny and irreverent look at St. Augustine’s history. And now I’m really excited to work with Ian Mairs and play Eb Scrooge on the Wilson Center Stage.

Players by the Sea presents the Jacksonville premiere of “The Whipping Man,” a stirring story of faith and freedom set in the Civil War era. Since its acclaimed Broadway run in 2011, this inspiring drama by Matthew Lopez has become one of the most performed plays in the country, with audiences responding strongly to its message of hope and brotherhood.

Director, Wilson Center at Florida State College at Jacksonville

WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCE? To be honest, I find I’m most inspired by the middle school kids my wife works with. The ones who take acting seriously are typical middle school kids offstage, but once they hit the stage they become bigger than life and I’m totally drawn in. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR MOST FAVORITE ROLES, TO DATE? I’ve done several shows at Limelight Theatre and really enjoyed playing King in “Big River,” Giles Corey in “The Crucible,” and Senex in “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.” At Flagler College I played Adam in Shakespeare’s “As You Like It.” When my wife did “Oliver” at Murray Middle School, I had the honor of portraying Fagin. WHAT IS IT LIKE TO BE THE BAH HUMBUG KING OF MEAN? It’s awesome. I’ve always loved the story. Ian Mair’s Jacksonville version gives an extra special twist to the role. It’s fun, and a bit sad, to dig in to the character and learn why the old coot is like he is. Luckily Dickens, with the original, and Ian Mairs, with this one, covers that backstory well. As silly as it sounds, I find the most difficult thing about the role is coming up with a way of saying, “Bah humbug,” that I like.

EDDIE MEKKA IN “SOUTH PACIFIC” 12000 Beach Blvd. • (904) 641-1212 AlhambraJax.com

Eddie Mekka, who played the role of Carmine Ragusa – the Big Ragu – in the hit TV series “Laverne & Shirley” will be featured in the Alhambra’s upcoming performance of Rogers and Hammerstein’s, “South Pacific.” Mekka follows his “Laverne & Shirley” cast-mate (and good friend) Cindy Williams. The plot of “South Pacific” centers on an American nurse stationed on a South Pacific island during World War II who falls in love with a middle-aged expatriate French plantation owner. This story is intertwined with a secondary romance, between a U.S. lieutenant and a young Tonkinese woman. “South Pacific” will run at the Alhambra Oct. 23-Dec. 1. Show time is 8 p.m. for evening shows Tuesday through Sunday. Doors open at 5:45 p.m. and dinner will be served until 7:30 p.m. Matinees on Saturday are at 1:15 p.m. Doors open at 11 a.m. and brunch starts at 11:15 a.m. Sunday matinee is at 2 p.m. Doors open at noon and the meal start at 12:15 p.m. Group sales are available. Preview night pricing for the first two nights is available for $38. Regular pricing for tickets starts at $46 for adults and $35 for children. Ticket price includes dinner, show and parking. Call the box office at (904) 641-1212 or AlhambraJax.com.

In the last days of the Civil War, Caleb, a wounded Confederate officer staggers into his family’s war-ravaged home in Richmond. He finds that his family has fled, leaving behind only two former slaves, Simon and John. Maimed and disillusioned by war, Caleb has lost his faith, while John uses his new freedom to plunder the deserted homes of the neighborhood. Only Simon retains a steadfast moral compass, sustained by the family faith – which is Jewish. In a powerful scene, he organizes a Passover Seder that celebrates not only the deliverance of the Israelites from Pharaoh’s bondage, but the emancipation of his own people from slavery. The three men grapple with their new relationship and interdependency, tied to each other by history and religion, but also bound by deeply-buried secrets.

Since its acclaimed Broadway run in 2011, this inspiring drama by Matthew Lopez has become one of the most performed plays in the country, with audiences responding strongly to its message of hope and brotherhood. The play is directed by Roxanna Lewis and features an outstanding three-man cast. Kelly Rossberg, as Caleb, comes to PBTS fresh from the musical hit “Spamalot” at Limelight Theatre. Eugene Lindsay, as Simon, is a longtime favorite at PBTS, appearing most recently in “Five Guys Named Moe” and “Dividing the Estate.” David Girard, as John, is a perennial award nominee for his work in “The Full Monty,” “Gem of the Ocean,” “Julius X” and many other roles on Players’ stages. Performances are Nov. 8, 9, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, 23 at 8 p.m. and Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. on the Main Stage. Tickets are $23; seniors, students, military $20. The cast, along with Jeanie Lejoi, has completed indepth research on the show’s characters. “We have a responsibility,” Collins said. “The show’s characters are real people.”

Heekin Hero! Dr. R. David Heekin, FACS

Heekin Orthopedic Specialists, Board-Certified Orthopedic Surgeon Medical Director, Orthopedic Center of Excellence, St. Vincent’s Medical Center Riverside Chief of Orthopedics, St. Vincent’s Medical Center Riverside

BUZZ: How did you get your start in medicine and orthopedics? Dr. H: I was in the Army for 24 years, 13 of those years I spent working in Washington D.C.

with the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. I have been many places in my life, but I always wanted to come back home to Jacksonville…. I have always loved it here! I grew up here and of all the places I have visited I still love it here the most. In 2000, I joined a doctor who had a solo practice and was going to retire soon. I figured I would take over the practice. I knew a lot about orthopedics, but I didn’t really know much about the business side of medicine yet. In the Army you didn’t have to, that was taken care of.

BUZZ: Why did you decide to start your own practice? Dr. H: The doctor I joined was ready to retire and I wanted to grow our business. We were

going in different directions, three months into it I realized I needed to go out on my own. After 24 years in the Army, I knew I never wanted to be in a big group. I decided I would be a solo guy; make my mistakes and live with them. That was how I wanted to be. Funny how things turn out!

BUZZ: What was it like developing that business? Dr. H: My wife is an accountant, so I recruited her and I asked her to help me. She got

everything set up from an accounting and business standpoint, while I was out seeing patients in different places (ER’s, etc.) and trying to build a practice. Two years later, a friend called and had someone who wanted to meet with me. At that point I still wanted to be solo, but he convinced me to at least meet with this person. After meeting him I was just enamored with the guy. He was great; very articulate, very caring. I thought I would be crazy not to let him partner with me.

BUZZ: What were some key factors for you, making decisions about what your developing group would be like?

BUZZ: How can the community help conquer this debilitating condition? Dr. H: It’s always encouraging when you see families

come in for the post op visit and I am able to say Here’s what I see and I can help make them better! Weight can be a major contributor, with weight comes arthritis, the two are related. I always try and encourage family members to help each other lose weight once that joint starts feeling better. It has to be family member driven. I encourage them to walk 3 miles a day after dinner; so we can live longer, enjoy the grandkids. Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune disease, so the key to conquering arthritis is to partner with the Arthritis Foundation. AF is the number 1 funder of critical research for arthritis. I want to see a cure.

BUZZ: You are having your 3rd Annual Joint Replacement Fun Walk – November 23rd to benefit AF. Tell us about that?

Dr. H:

The Walk is on Saturday, November 23rd. It is an event celebrating the accomplishments of patients overcoming arthritis through joint replacement. We celebrate their successful recovery, and their continued dedication toward active living. While the Walk was designed for former and current joint replacement patients, it also includes their family members, friends, physicians, and the staff members who have been there to help and support them throughout the process. The money that is raised goes towards furthering orthopedics for the community giving to charitable organizations that support those in need of care.

BUZZ: This year you are the Honorary Chair of the 2013 Jingle Bell Run/Walk. What is that event all about?

Dr. H: The Jingle Bell Run is sponsored by the Arthritis Foundation.

I am honored to be selected as this year’s Honorary Corporate Chairman. It’s an opportunity for members of the community to get together and have some fun! You can walk or run! This event allows us to generate money to fight the problem.

BUZZ: Do you have any advice for young professionals as they enter the field of medicine?

Dr. H: Like everything in this country, it’s changing - the face of medicine is changing. As health care providers we need to be good stewards of our limited resources.

Dr. H: Dr. Rhaul Deshmukh and Dr. Kevin Murphy were my next two partners. Dr. Murphy and I had worked together up at Walter Reed - he had been the President’s orthopedist. He was very well thought of in the ARMY community and also in orthopedics. After they came on board, the practice just kept growing and growing! Now we have 13 physicians. We added 4 new doctors this year alone. Another key decision came from the guy who trained me up in Arlington, VA. He told me choosing your hospital is the second most important decision next to choosing your spouse. A doctor operating in a poor hospital will have poor results. When I came to town I had privileges at all the hospitals. I just felt that St. Vincent’s fit me best. When you walk

in the hallways every morning making rounds on patients, people look you in the eye and say ‘Good Morning.’ You don’t get that at every hospital.

BUZZ: Your success in your practice and our community is evident. This year you were recognized at the Legacy of Leaders dinner and the Portraits of Leadership Gallery. What kind of weight does that hold for you?

Dr. H: It’s a great initiative from the Arthritis Foundation. I was quite honored to have been chosen. “Legacy of Leaders” is a celebration of positive leadership in the greater Jacksonville community. The Portraits of Leadership gallery is traveling throughout Jacksonville. It debuted at Ocean 60 Restaurant where the dinner was held. Following that it then went to TPC Sawgrass, St. Vincent’s Medical Center, and is now on display at Baptist – Downtown. The goal is to inspire others to dream big, “pay it forward”, and to be a positive role model and leader in our community. Jacksonville is an amazing place and it is important to me to inspire, to motivate and to lead by example. BUZZ: How do you balance your successful professional life with your personal life? Dr. H: You can’t, there’s no direct separation of it. It’s funny…. I can’t go anywhere (Home

Depot, an airplane coming back from Chicago) without people saying “Hey! How’re you doing?”

I love what I do! I do it because I love people, my patients and their families!

BUZZ: What is arthritis? Dr. H: Arthritis is a big basket of a lot of different disease processes. There are over 100

diseases that fall under the umbrella of the name “arthritis”. Arthritis can be genetic and some comes as a result of injuries. If we can screen people in their earlier years before it manifests, we may be able to make a huge difference. The most common types of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis, which is an auto-immune disease, osteoarthritis, and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Arthritis can affect anyone at any age. There are over 300,000 children living with arthritis.

FOCUS on FERNANDINA By Jan Leggio Hodges-Check out her blog on iwantBUZZ.com

Hola! from Cuba 117 Centre St. Fernandina Beach

What are your specialties?

Did you know that Cuba has a national drink? I didn’t! Chris Garcia informed me that Iron Beer, a scrumptious soft drink that combines the tastes of cream soda and root beer, is the official Cuban beverage. Mr. Garcia and his partner, Marisol Triana, opened the Cuban restaurant Hola! in Fernandina Beach this April.

Cuban coffee is also a favorite. It is very rich with a bold strong flavor. The beans are freshly ground for each customer. Some patrons buy it 2-3 times a day!

(904) 321-0163

How did you decide to open your restaurant? Chris: I had 11-12 years experience working in restaurants and bars in Miami. After living in Fernandina Beach in 1998 and 2008, I fell in love with the area. Since the nearest Cuban cuisine was 40 miles away, I decided to open my business here. Why did you choose to serve Cuban food? Chris: I am Cuban and grew up eating this type of food. My parents and grandma cooked it.

22

NOVEMBER 2013 • www.iwantaBUZZ.com

Chris: The Cuban is a pressed sandwich that is made of pork slow-roasted in house, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard on Cuban bread.

Describe your pastries. Chris: The pastelitos are puff pastries with guava or guava and cheese. They are also available with beef or cheese fillings. These traditional pastries offerings are unique in this area. Is there anything else unique about your establishment? Chris: We stay open until 2 a.m. on Friday on Saturday and serve the late night crowd. Hola! is one of the few places in the area that doesn’t close by 10:30 p.m. or so. Since you opened in April, what’s the feedback you have gotten? Chris: Really good. We have locals and tourists alike who frequent our restaurant. In the last two months alone, we got 425 followers On Facebook!

Two Thumbs Up How Good Food Should Taste

The Blind Rabbit

Article by Monica Stouder & Photos by Monica Lea Imagery

Jeff and John Stanford (operating partners of the Salty Fig restaurant in Riverside) have manifested another brand new, brother-to-brother, flavor-filled brainchild for those folks whose stomping grounds are a little sandier. Introducing to Jax Beach – The Blind Rabbit! Touting itself as a burger and whiskey bar, TBR is a spot for eclectic eaters and adventurous sippers to be sure. The service here is young, knowledgeable and incredibly friendly, and I liked the bustling atmosphere – but it was the food that I enjoyed even more. To me, the menu goes way beyond burgers and slips delightfully into the eclectic (my favorite)! I started off with an appetizer of Bacon & Corn Croquettes. These beautiful bites were full of bacony goodness and the corn and avocado salsa really was really did a tasty textural Tango in my mouth. As my entrée, I opted to try one of the gourmet hamburgers. My target was called The Hotlick. Braised in Intuition beer, this pork belly was a huge portion comparative to the patty below it – (I loved that), and with a slew of fresh veg, (including of course the Stanford’s infamous homemade pickles) sunny side up egg and some incredible Lemon Aioli – well this hamburger didn’t have a chance to be anything but spectacular! Fantabulous to say the least! But dessert was a really shining star in my book as well. The Maple Bacon Milkshake takes some of the tastiest things on Earth and marries them… Bourbon, bacon and vanilla ice cream – all whipped together in a thickn-creamy concoction that could quite possibly make

one tear-up with appreciation for this creative culinary anomaly. Sweet and savory – this is stuff dreams are made of to be sure, and you can betcha’ I’ll be back to make sure the last one wasn’t simply a figment to my tantalized taste buds!

Overall, TBR is a great spot for phenomenal food and an array of hand-picked whiskey, shine, drafts and creative cocktails. The service is great here and the ambiance is energetic. More casual than the Stanford Boys predecessor, the Salty Fig, The Blind Rabbit is another stand out spot for these farm-to-table restaurateurs. Kudos guys on another delicious success! Happy Hour is from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and open to close on Mondays. With over 100 whiskies, 28 different kinds of moonshine and a multitude of local brews on tap, Happy Hour here is not one to miss! There are 10 large flat screens to watch the game, plus the restaurant seats 219 so finding a spot to do so shouldn’t be a problem. Don’t forget this little street corner of the beach has rooftop parking over this strip of buildings and it’s FREE to the patrons of the restaurant!

By Henriettibles.com

Cider, cider everywhere, but which one do we drink? Some ciders are really sweet and literally taste like you just bit into an apple. Some are mild, with just a hint of apple aroma. Some are not sweet at all, and quite bubbly. Yes, literally every hard cider is different (and they are all gluten free!). Like wine and beer, they have a very distinct personality. I created this recipe to complement Crispin Natural Hard Apple Cider, a beautiful, all natural artisanal cider that tastes like the aroma of apples being cut. You know when grandma is cutting apples to make her amazing apple pie? It has a little bit of tartness at the end, which is a fabtastic taste buddy to the maple in the glaze for the chicken. Create this little beauty of a meal, serve your cider in a stemmed glass, light a candle and a fire in the fireplace and savor the moment.be all treat, no tricks!

When did you find an interest in cooking? I was inspired as an extremely young child to cook by watching TV shows like “Yan Can Cook” with Chef Martin Yan and Julia Child.

How did you receive your training to become a chef? I graduated from the Connecticut Culinary Institute and have traveled all over the country cooking for a multitude of people including numerous celebrity NFL and NBA players. What cuisines influence your style of cooking? Bohemian and French influences. I feel that this food-style combination sets my cooking apart and makes me a very unique Personal Chef. Most unusual dish you have eaten: Rocky Mountain Oysters

Peruvian Caribbean Jerk: First of all, huh? Peruvian? What on earth is that? Wait, can we have a sample? Mmmmmm yummy goodness! We’ve never seen this on a menu before! This is tasty and you’re going to mix this with Caribbean Jerk? We suppose folks from Peru have gone to the Islands Man! It’s possible! Oh, we’ve got to try! This sauce has a nice kick to it; it’s spicier than just the Peruvian by itself. Its sweet, but its spicy, is that ginger we are tasting? It’s a thicker gooey sauce – we highly recommend this! Garlic: We had to! Great chunks of garlic, yummy butter, it was gone quickly and no bats would be attacking us on the way home! Fire: Spicy Hot! A basic order of these will leave you with a bill for an order of 10 wings IVL JMMZ[ ZMY]QZML \W X]\ W]\ \PM ÅZM Spicy! Habanero and a little ghost pepper action. A good thicker sauce that sticks to the wings! Deelish! Ryan Sauce: Who is Ryan and why does he have a sauce? We didn’t meet him. There wasn’t anyone around us named Ryan. But whoever he is, he has one helluva sauce! Its Peruvian, its creamy, its slightly parm ÆI^WZML [TQOP\Ta ZIVKPa XMXXMZa [WUM cilantro, maybe some brown sugar, wait maybe its honey mustard. Oh whatever, we didn’t have a clue. It’s the Full Monty of sauces! It was that sauce that you drive for. The next time you need a time-out, or maybe when you get put into a time-out (hee hee hee), Visit Time-Out! It’s worth the road trip! Martina McBride In Pandora Holiday

By Nia Alailima

Nov. 9 at the Veterans Memorial Arena

Musicology

Moments on Ice

Although this impressive soprano singer is known as Martina McBride, she was born Martina Schiff, July 29, 1966 in Sharon, Kansas to Jeanne and Daryl Schiff. Heavily influenced by her father’s love of country music, Martina would spend her afternoons singing along to popular country artists in her family home. She sang in her father’s band The Schiffters before she even turned ten, where she began to cultivate her love for performing. At the age of 22, Martina and studio engineer, John McBride, married and moved to Nashville Tennessee to pursue their careers in the music industry. After meeting Garth Brooks as a promoter for his tour, Martina was invited to perform as his opening act.

Martina’s debut single, “The Time Has Come,” made it to Number 23 on the Country Music Charts. Martina remembers that time in her life recalling, “Most of what I remember about those days was traveling around in a van with no money. We’d pool all our money as a band and buy a couple of loaves of bread and some peanut butter and jelly. We’d live on that for about a week and I’d go into these little dives and scream my head off singing Pat Benatar,” (Martina McBride, MartinaMcBride.com). Since the beginning of her career, in the early 1990’s, Martina has achieved huge success, with five Number 1 singles on the Country Music Charts between 1995 and 2001, and a Number 1 on the Adult Contemporary Chart in 2003.

“RING OF FIRE-THE MUSIC OF JOHNNY CASH”

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: Stories of faith, family, passion, redemption, and humor set the stage ablaze in this new national tour of “Ring of Fire—The Music of Johnny Cash.” Touching on the life and times of musical icon Johnny Cash, the musical revue, “Ring of Fire,” is considered one of the best “ jukebox musicals” of our time. “Ring of Fire” features a company of talented performers who guide us on a journey through Cash’s storied life and celebrated sound, from the cotton fields of Arkansas to the Grand Ole Opry. “Ring of Fire” features more than 35 hit songs from Cash’s long career including “I Walk the Line,” “Jackson,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “A Boy Named Sue,” and the title track “Ring of Fire.” With singalong medleys and lots of bounce in its guitar-driven energy, the show will have audience members stompin’ their feet and begging for more. “Ring of Fire—The Music of Johnny Cash” was created by Richard Maltby, Jr. and conceived by William Meade; it was originally produced on Broadway by William

Meade, CTM Productions, and James B. Freydberg. In developing the creative vision for the show, Maltby and Meade reportedly felt that although they do not dramatize Johnny Cash’s life, it was important by the end of the show for the audience to feel they had spent the evening in the presence of an extraordinary man. Cash wrote and sang about the lives we lead, regardless of where we lead them. Maltby once stated: “If watching this show you feel you are being drawn back to your roots, it’s not accidental. I hope, as we bring to life these wonderful songs, we will touch your heart, mind and soul as well, and take you back to part of your life you may want to return turn to.” Reserved seating tickets range from $35 to $40 and may be purchased by calling 355ARTS, visiting FloridaTheatre.com, any Ticketmaster outlet, or the Florida Theatre Ticket Office.

Even with charting hits one right after another, turmoil doesn’t escape the band who within 2 years got a new drummer, left a major label to sign with an indie, left long time managers, just to leave the indie label not even a year after inking a deal. But with a new team behind them and motivation increased, Saving Abel sets out to do things on their own terms. “We’re incredibly tight now, it’s like we have this awesome fresh start and we’re excited” continued Weeks.

CAT POWER

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: “SUN” is the new studio album from Cat Power. Six years after her last album of original material, Chan Marshall has moved on from her collaborative forays into Memphis soul and Delta blues. She wrote, played, recorded and produced the entirety of “SUN” by herself, a statement of complete control that is echoed in the songs’ themes. Marshall calls “SUN” “a rebirth,” which is exactly what this confident, ambitious, charismatic record feels like. “’Moon Pix’ was about extreme isolation and survival in the crazy struggle,” she says. “’SUN’ is don’t look back, pick up, and go confidently into your own future, to personal power and fulfillment.” Though devoid of grave bedroom confessionals, “SUN” is possibly Cat Power’s most personal album to date. For all its layered expansiveness, it is as handcrafted as her debut, and never has a Cat Power album so paralleled her personality and state of mind – channeling her humor, anger, deep empathy, musical inspirations, technical skill, and spiritual inquiry into an album that’s both surprising and comforting. Those versed in the Cat Power discography will detect elements of 2003’s landmark album “You Are Free,” which experimented with vocal forms and beats borrowed from urban music, and the spellbinding authority of songs like “American Flag.” Sonically, however, with credit to mixer Philippe Zdar (Phoenix, Chromeo, Beasties), “SUN” is incredibly fresh, reflecting its forward-looking mindset. “SUN” was recorded over the past three years in Malibu (in a studio she built herself), Silver Lake (in the Dust Brothers’ studio The Boat), Miami (South Beach Studios), and Paris (Motorbass), where she mixed with Zdar in spring 2012.

formed his first band, the Cupids, while still in high school. Following three years in college, Rowan left academia and decided to pursue a life in music. Rowan began his professional career in 1963 as the singer, rhythm guitarist and songwriter for the Bluegrass Boys, led by the founding father of bluegrass, Bill Monroe. “One thing I started to like about the Monroe style was that there was a lot more blues in it than other styles of bluegrass,” reflects Rowan. “It was darker. It had more of an edge to it. And yet it still had the ballad tradition in it, and I loved that.” On the road, Rowan performs internationally as a solo singer-songwriter, while stateside he plays in three bands: the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band, a quartet featuring Keith Little, Mike Witcher and Paul Knight; Big Twang Theory and its Texas Cousin Twang n Groove and rock band The Free Mexican Air Force.

Are you in the market for a bike, but aren’t entirely sure where to begin? Are you searching for a bike that isn’t too intimidating? Look no further than the beach cruiser! For those of you wanting a smooth, sturdy, yet fashionable ride, turn your attention to the cruiser. While most would say there is nothing fun about a bike so simple, I would like to think there is beauty in simplicity. With standard beach cruisers, you don’t have to worry about gears, shifting, or any cables, which saves you money in the long run because you won’t have to bring the bike in for many repairs. Low-maintenance is definitely a plus, especially when it comes to a bicycle. Cruisers provide comfort and stability thanks to their upright handlebars and big seats. Comfort aside, they are also quite customizable!

SERVING THE JACKSONVILLE COMMUNITY FOR OVER 30 YEARS

THE PLAY BY PLAY

WITH COLE PEPPER

STEVE LIVINGSTONE

President, Jacksonville NASL soccer team Steve Livingstone has deep soccer roots dating back to his youth in Scotland, but the last two jobs he’s had have been in football, with the Scottish Claymores of NFL Europe and with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Now, he’s taking over business operations as the president of the yet to be named Jacksonville NASL soccer team.

CP: Cole Pepper: What is your goal as President of the team? SL: I am developing all business and commercial aspects of the team, working closely with our team owner, Mark Frisch, and Sunshine Soccer Group President, Dario Sala. We’ll be looking to establish great partnerships, to truly engage with our fans and to grow our fan base and support through season ticket purchases in order to build a strong foundation and sustainable future for the club as we build toward our first season in 2015. CP: Why is Jacksonville a good soccer town? SL: I think Jacksonville is a great sports town period. We have a very strong pro soccer tradition going back to the Tea Men and tremendous grassroots activity in the vibrant soccer leagues and teams around town. UNF and JU have great soccer programs and the participation in the adult leagues is also growing.

“We want to build something unique and special that everyone in the city and beyond can be proud of and will want to be a part of by coming out to support the team. “ There’s also a healthy and passionate corps of true soccer fans here - being able to draw 40,000 fans to the USA vs. Scotland friendly last year shows the potential we have and it’s going to be great to use the NASL as another vehicle to promote Jacksonville regionally, nationally and internationally. CP: How big can the NASL in Jacksonville become? SL: I think that really depends on how well we engage with the fans here in Jacksonville from the start and how well they support the team. Our ambitions are to be successful by adopting best practices and to be here for a very long time. We want to build something unique and special that everyone in the city and beyond can be proud of and will want to be a part of by coming out to support the team. You just need to look at places like Portland and Seattle to see how soccer has really taken off there. Jacksonville should be no different. NOVEMBER 2013 • www.iwantaBUZZ.com

Open Dialogue

As a parent of a toddler who is, let’s just say, “less than fond of his dentist,” I absolutely dread the days of dentist appointments. That was until I had the privilege to meet and interview Dr. Patrick Weaver and Dr. Robert Weaver from Weaver & Stratton Pediatric Dentistry. All dentists in the practice are Certified in Pediatric Dentistry, which means they attended an additional two year residency after completing dental school. With a patient satisfaction score of 5 out of 5 stars on RateaDentist.com, I was ready with a few questions for them!

DR. RW Thanks, that is something we hope to convey; we are not just about treating a child’s tooth. We know that there is a child attached to that tooth and our focus is to not only make the child comfortable, but also the parents as well. Everything we do starts with the very first appointment, and we try to make it an experience that will be enjoyable for both parents and child. DR. PW One of the things that we are proud of and I feel makes us unique is that we get to focus on kids being happy. Our office is decorated in a zoo theme, we hand out balloons and other prizes, all with the intent of making oral health fun and making coming to the dentist something our patients can look forward to and be excited about. JC Here’s a popular question for new parents. At what age do you recommend parents bring their child in for their first dentist appointment?

We are not just about treating a child’s tooth. We know that there is a child attached to that tooth and our focus is to not only make the child comfortable, but also the parents as well. - Dr. Robert Weaver

DR. PW Well, according to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, it is recommended that a child should establish a dental home within 6 months of the eruption of their first tooth, or by age 1, whichever is sooner. As a

practice, we are focused on prevention and education, and both are best applied at a young age. DR. RW Educating both parents and children on how to properly brush their teeth and diet habits is important. Our priority is to make the child comfortable and build trust with them, and one way we do that is by starting to see them from a young age. JC What if your patients need you for an injury that happens during nonbusiness hours? DR. RW We offer 24 hour emergency care, where we are always on call should a patient fall and bump their tooth.

After visiting the practice for an hour, I can see why they have such a positive customer service ratings online. We spoke at length about their caring approach to special needs patients, their continued dedication to a positive patient experience, and it is clear to me that at Weaver & Stratton, they are truly committed to their patients.

DR. JOHN CAREY, MD

Board Certified in Anesthesiology and Pain Management Jacksonville Spine Center 10475 Centurion Pkwy. N., # 201 Dr John Carey earned his Medical Degree from Tulane University School Of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1990, and went on to complete his Pain Management Fellowship at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic here in Jacksonville, FL in 1996. Dr. Carey is Board Certified in Anesthesiology and Pain Management. JC Dr. Carey, tell me a little bit about Jacksonville Spine Center and what makes you unique. Dr. JC Well, Dr. Chris Roberts established Jacksonville Spine in 2000, with the goal of creating a patient centric interventional spine center. “Back Pain” has become the second most common reason people seek a doctor, second only to the flu. This encompasses lot of patients with a wide range of injuries, both physical and psychological.

Our first priority is to identify and diagnose the cause of their pain. Once diagnosed, our physicians practice advanced techniques, including interventional procedures, medication management, and rehabilitation or a combination of these to address complex and multidimensional pain syndromes.

Our focus is on providing individualized care while using a multi-disciplinary approach for our patients. There are a number of practices out there that practice “Pain Management,” and in the last 10 years the specialty has become more organized, to a point where physicians are becoming specialty boarded in Pain Management.

We work very closely with our patients to develop a treatment program specific to their needs, aimed at eliminating unnecessary pain and improving their quality of life. JC What treatment options do you offer for “back pain” here at Jacksonville Spine Center? Dr. JC Well, “back pain” is a symptom. Our first priority is to identify and diagnose the cause of their pain. Once diagnosed, our physicians practice advanced techniques, including interventional procedures, medication management, and rehabilitation or a combination of these to address complex and multidimensional pain syndromes. Every patient’s pain level and diagnosis is different, and therefore their treatment plans are different. We use a multi-disciplinary approach, which means we work as a team with other healthcare providers from imaging, to physical therapy, and spine surgeons, to treat the patient’s medical problem as a whole. Throughout the process, we document and assess the progress of a patient, and work with them to progressively tailor their treatment program to achieve the best possible outcome.

BUZZ: As a surgeon what are some of the most common injuries you see? KK: The most common injuries in athletes involve tears in ligaments or cartilage. With these injuries, athletes are faced with a lengthy recovery and a considerable rehabilitation process prior to returning to competition. BUZZ: What advances have you seen over the last decade in orthopedics? KK: The advances seen over the last decade involve a shift to “Orthobiologics.” Surgical techniques have changed in regard to smaller incisions and a more detailed understanding of anatomy. However, there is an increasing focus on the issue of cartilage and ligament healing and repair. BUZZ: Tell us more about orthopaedic surgery and its purpose. KK: The goal of all orthopaedic surgeons treating athletes is to address surgically indicated injuries and return them to play as soon as possible understanding the lengthy biological and muscular healing process that must occur. Orthopaedic Sports Medicine is constantly evolving as our technology improves. Biologic healing, in addition to improvements in surgical techniques, will continue to improve overall patient outcomes. O In the Zone By Allison Agnello

The lovable Louie Anderson is not just a renowned TV icon from “Family Feud” and “Life with Louie,” but now he is also a motivational figure. His new campaign “Get off the Couch” encourages people to get a little exercise everyday. It started with one life-changing moment on the ABC TV show “Splash.” He agreed to be on the show for health reasons: to work out and eat better. After some training and exercise, Louie dived off a 23-foot board. In the 6 months since the end of the show, he has already noticed results. He has lost 40 pounds and noticed improvements in walking and swimming. He attributes the positive progress to an improved mindset and motivation. Saturday, November 16, you can participate in Louie’s weekly “Walk and Talk.” The half-hour walk is followed by an encouraging discussion. Louie will talk about the struggles of healthy living,

especially for those struggling with weight and motivation issues. He emphasizes “It is all about simple movements. Little steps to start with.” Keep this in mind next time you commit to the all-day movie marathon. Louie will be at The Comedy Zone for 3 nights of “clean” comedy. Family is a major topic, since he grew up as one of 11 children. He tailors his comedy to appeal to all crowds, without offensive or vulgar language. The Jacksonville Landing Join the BIGGEST tailgate party in the world! November kicks off with the biggest rivalry football game, Florida vs. Georgia. Friday, November 1 enjoy live music, entertainment, food, fans and fun at The Landing at the various restaurants, bars and nightclub. Looking for a place to watch the game on Saturday? How about on the JUMBOTRON in The Landing’s Courtyard! Join thousands of Florida Gators and Georgia Bulldog fans at 3:30 p.m. on November 2nd to cheer your team to victory. The Jacksonville Landing is decking the halls and ringing in the holiday season with one of Jacksonville’s largest and most popular events: The 27th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, taking place on Friday, November 29 at 7 p.m. in The Landing’s Courtyard.

What do officers look for when stopping someone for DUI and how do they determine who to arrest? Most people are pulled over for suspicion of DUI because of an erratic driving pattern or violating a traffic law that leads to evidence of DUI. Once pulled over, officers can look for a number of indicators of impairment such as bloodshot and watery eyes, slurred speech, disorientation, not following an officer’s request and questions, and smelling of alcohol. Having open containers of alcohol are not only an infraction but can give an officer a reason to search your car. Any or all of these factors can lead an officer to ask you to do field sobriety tasks which are a series of exercises to test your ability to follow directions and test your reactions and balance. These include walking a line, standing on one leg, and finger to nose exercises. If you do not perform well on these tasks, officers then make a decision whether they have enough to place you under arrest for DUI.

Don’t miss the magic as the 56-foot-tall Christmas tree lights up and sparkles with more than 78,000 L.E.D. lights and over 240 ornaments. This annual ceremony will take you to an unforgettable winter wonderland with your favorite Christmas songs performed by your favorite local singers, an incredible fireworks show on the beautiful St. Johns River and a surprise celebrity guest performance. Arrive early to enjoy the pre-show filled with your favorite Christmas music and carols, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

What are the ramifications of a DUI?

Event Creator and Coordinator and Owner of Petanque America

If you are convicted of DUI, for a first time offender, the penalties usually include probation. The offender would end up paying over $1000 in fines and costs. You would have to complete 50 hours of community service, enroll and complete a DUI school, and your license would be suspended for at least 6 months. Of course the more serious the DUI, the more serious the punishment. There are numerous other sanctions including jail so the bottom line is not to take the chance. Get a taxi or DD!

What inspired you to bring the game of Petanque to Fernandina?

The information presented herein reflects only the opinion of the author and not iwantaBUZZ Entertainment Magazine, it’s owner, or publisher. All information in iwantaBUZZ Entertainment Magazine is for educational purposes only. It is not a substitute for any advice given to you by your lawyer.

Well, in 2009 I was looking for a place on the East Coast with a nice climate, close to a port and an airport, and with a pleasant downtown atmosphere. When I discovered the large parking lot along the marina I saw it as the perfect setting for a large tournament. That, in turn, led to the start of a local club, which, with some 100 members, rapidly became the largest in the country.

For those not familiar with Petanque, could you give a brief description of the game? It’s a cousin of both horseshoes, where you toss towards a stake, and the Italian bowling game called “bocce”, where you roll wooden balls towards a target ball. Another cousin is the English “lawn bowling”. In petanque, you use steel balls, and either toss or roll the balls as close as possible to a little wooden ball, called the “piglet”. But you can also “shoot” an opponent’s ball, or even the little one out of place. Teams take turns and whoever gets closest wins. Physical strength is irrelevant, and thus makes it very inclusive.

Pop the Cork By John Bryan

Time O Brew By Marc Wisdom Every year I get asked what beers will be on my Thanksgiving table. So, in order to help you decide what to serve with your feast, I put together this little primer. Often, the actual Thanksgiving meal begins with a salad in our home. A hit with my family is my mother’s favorite orientalstyle salad that includes dry Ramen Noodles crumbled in at and a dressing made with sesame seed oil and vinegar. The sweet salad dressing deserves a beer that will not over-power it so my first thought is to pair it with a Belgian White Ale like Blanche de Bruxelles. The wonderful balance of coriander and citrus of this brew should enhance the sweet and tangy dressing. For the main course of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, yams, cranberry sauce, and so on. Oktoberfest-style beers have many of the characteristics of Brown Ales, but tend to have a cleaner finish. To me that is important. I want a beer that is going to refresh and cleanse my palate between bites, not leave a lingering malty flavor. One of my favorite Oktoberfest beers is Ayinger Oktoberfest. You may still be able to find some at your local beer store, so hurry on out for it. Hacker Pschorr Oktoberfest and Flying Fish Oktoberfish are also great choices. At the end of the turkey gorging, there are always all those wonderful desserts. In our family that means pumpkin pie, apple

pie, and rich chocolate cake. For me, the only way to go is a rich, dark stout that is redolent of chocolate, coffee and perhaps some spices. Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout fits the bill perfectly. Golden Tap Beer of the Month Goose Island Pepe Nero has an aroma full of roasted chestnuts and a flavor that is smooth and slightly peppery. This farmhouse-style ale is the perfect accompaniment to your holiday meals.

MARC WISDOM can often be found sleeping under the Thanksgiving Day table due to an excess of food and good cheer. If you find him under any other tables, please notify the authorities. Follow all his exploits at JaxBeerGuy.com

Silly Wine Questions I have some friends who are wine professionals. They work with owners of restaurants and retail wine stores every day. A large part of being a wine professional is learning about wine and educating people.

My friends often pour wine at tastings, where they meet wine fans. I asked my friends to tell me the silliest wine questions or comments they have gotten recently. Most didn’t need to think very long to remember a quirky question. Here’s what they shared: “I’m looking for a wine I tasted recently,” said one lady. “I don’t know the name, but it’s red, comes in a bottle about this big and is made of grapes.” The wine professional did a fine acting job, not laughing when he was about to lose it. He said he would need a little more information, which was true. In fact, she described about sixty percent of the wine in the world, and nearly all of the bottles.

A gentleman once returned a full bottle of wine, saying it was bad because the cork was missing. In fact, it was a screwtop bottle. The cap had been cut off at the top, as though it was wine foil that needed to be cut away. He was right, there was no cork and never had been. The wine was definitely not bad. After sampling a lot of wines at a tasting, a gentleman tried some Florida wines. “Finally,” he said, “wine that tastes good!” The wines were very sweet, made to be consumed by Florida tourists. One customer asked my friend if he had been to the Rombauer Winery in France. My friend said yes, Rombauer was great, and it is in St. Helena in Napa Valley. Another asked if Macon-Villages wines are made in Georgia. They are, in fact, from France. It is an appellation that includes some white wines produced in an area of southern Burgundy. The customer was thinking of Macon, Georgia.

Linda Johnson, Director of Brand Development at

MILE MARKER BREWING Interview by Monica Stouder

What is unique about the MMB? The concept of the “mile markers” and the correlation to the laid-back beachy lifestyle of Florida and the Keys, as well as St. Augustine references. It’s pretty cool to name beers after Ponce de Leon (Mile Marker 1513 Pecan de Leon Nut Brown Ale) and the founding of the city of St. Augustine (Mile Marker 1565 Ancient City Red Ale®). Our Mile Marker® Zero Blonde Ale really gives the feel of being at the beach, having fun, and enjoying the lifestyle of the Sunshine State. Our Mile Marker® 82 Islamorada IPA, naturally, is a stronger beer, and we tie that in with the sport fishing that Islamorada is known for. We are excited to host the St. Augustine Chapter of the Bold City Brigade (Jacksonville Jaguars fan support group). The group is so much fun, and we really like that we can get a little crazy with them. We also like that our beer and our tap room appeals to every age group and interest group. We’re located in an industrial area, so we don’t worry too much about making noise.

“Dead Sundays” on Sunday nights with the beginning of Season 4 of “The Walking Dead”. During “Dead Sundays,” we have beer specials, and guests watch the repeat episode, followed by the new episode of “The Walking Dead.” Our bartender Miguel hosts Dead Sundays. We kicked off the new season on Oct. 13 with a “Return of the Walking Dead” party, and a bunch of our customers dressed up as characters and Zombies. We have cornhole tournaments every other Friday night. What do you want more people to know about your business? Where we are! We are located at 3420 Agricultural Center Dr. in St. Augustine. We are just west of I-95 Exit 318, just west of the S.R. 16/C.R. 208 interchange. We are located in an industrial/commercial area, and our brewery is housed in a big warehouse. Our tap room is inside the warehouse. Our Blue Turtle Logo is on a sign out front.

Prof. Dubious is the most knowledgeable person in the world by a large margin. Here, he deigns to respond to your ill-informed queries.

How does the birth of twins come about? - D. Grimm, South Bend, IN There are thousands of variables in how a human being can turn out: hair color, eye color, height, etc., and thus thousands of choices that have to be made when an embryo is developing. These decisions are made by an organ in the uterus called the uncilate gyrus. The gyrus has to make so many decisions so quickly that sometimes it gets overwhelmed and decides to hedge its bets. For instance, the gyrus may be trying to decide whether it’s better to make the person have a good sense for what spices to add when cooking, or for them to have good judgment in regard to using the word “literally” sparingly. In this case the gyrus may throw up its metaphorical hands and just decide to make two people, one with each quality. <ZQXTM\[ IVL Y]ILZ]XTM\[ ZM[]T\ NZWU UWZM LQNÅK]T\ LMKQ[QWV[ []KP I[ \PW[M ZMTI\QVO \W \I[\M QV UW^QM[ What is a black hole? - A. While black holes get the lion’s share of the publicity, there are many other types of holes in the universe.

Last week I went on my annual, justthe-guys, camping trip. On this type of excursion, there aren’t a whole lot of etiquette rules. Oh, there’s always the guy-things that you have to pay attention to: Don’t get too touchy or feely… at least not until we’re ALL drunk. Try not to complain about your life… unless you can end each complaint with a joke. But other than that, we all just kind of hang out and enjoy the fact that we don’t have to behave. It wasn’t until one of us pulled out a battery powered MP3 player that the problems started. Most of us enjoy a wide variety of genres, but at that exact moment, we all wanted to hear our favorites. We spent half the night putting together a playlist. It ranged from jazz to country, and everything in between. My pick was a Pink Floyd song. The playlist lasted less than an hour, and none of us wanted to spend four UWZM PW]Z[ ÅOP\QVO W^MZ IVW\PMZ XTIaTQ[\ so we put the MP3 player away… besides, the batteries had died. The next night, my friend Johnny pulled out his guitar. Now I love Johnny, but his guitar playing ability leaves a lot to be desired, and most of us were wishing the batteries on the MP3 player hadn’t died. Remember, though, that we’re camping— we don’t have a whole lot of etiquette rules to follow. So we were pretty brutal in our

criticism, which he completely ignored. *WJ ÅVITTa NW]VL I XIQZ WN [KQ[[WZ[ IVL K]\ two of his strings. Thus ended the music for the second night. As an act of vengeance, Johnny slipped home during the night and got his banjo. Not for himself—he had never learned to play it. The banjo is my instrument of choice. He knew, because he’d heard me play three songs on it before. What he didn’t know, was that those were the only three songs I knew. My round of musical torture didn’t last nearly as long as his, and everyone was grateful when I had reached the end of my repertoire.

November Horoscope Written by Kyle, Astrologer Extraordinaire Aries (March 21- April 19) I do appreciate your creativity, but come on now, your online profile on those dating sites is a little too over the top. Crank it down a few notches, to let’s say, the truth. People can like the real you, can’t they? Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Things are getting a little dicey this month for you Taurus. Friends. Crushes. Everyone. If you are up for the challenge, then be ready to deal with the drama. Otherwise you may want to spend some time to yourself, maybe just watching a drama as opposing to being the star in one. Gemini (May 21 – June 21) The signs are pointing to focus on the diversity of your friendships this month. Let me cut through the BS for you. Your love life this month is nonexistent, so I recommend hanging out with your friends. Cancer (June 22 – July 22) Love Venus is spending time this month in Cancer, your passionate fifth house (passion apparently needs five houses). Go create some attention and enjoy the flirt storm. “Flirt storm isn’t a real thing; I just made that up, but enjoy all the same. Leo (July 23 – August 22) Apparently no one can hold a candle to your hotness. At least someone is looking good this month. Since your “it factor is off the charts this month, you would be crazy to not go out on the town and see what fun “it can create. Can anyone tell me what “it is? Virgo (August 23 – September 22) I just read another horoscope, and it said for Virgo to “sacrifice lunches to be more productive at work. That is an interesting way of saying you need to lose weight. Why do they have to beat around the bush? Life is hard enough being chubby, but being called lazy also? That is too much. Libra (September 23 – October 22)That number you thought about calling or texting isn’t

going to dial itself. You managed to get the number, what was the point of doing that? So you could walk around in a Boston accent annoying your friends saying, “How ‘bout them apples.â€? Call him or her already. Scorpio (October 23 – November 21) I could go for a Cinnabon right about now. Couldn’t you? Mmmm. Anyways‌work hard and things will be good or something. I can’t predict the future when all I can think about is eating a Cinnabon. And all that icing Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21) If you have a mate, you will be getting a lot of, “do you know what I’m thinking?â€? I and everyone else hate that question, but I’m use to it because I get it all the time (due to my fortune telling ability). For once actually tell them what’s on your mind, and see how often they don’t ask that question again. Capricorn (December 22 – January 19) Fireworks in the friendship department? Oh, I mean clean up on aisle friendless. This is so destined for crash and burn, but you will forgo my warning and do it anyway. Friends should stay that way so you can talk about your mates behind their backs. Who you going to talk to now? Aquarius (January 20 – February 18) Did you know you had a tenth house of long term goals? If you didn’t it’s ok because yours is ugly right now. Don’t expect any long term relationships being created this month or lasting if you do have them. Hopefully you have some family to hang with for Thanksgiving because it won’t be a mate. Pisces (February 19 – March 20) It’s becoming the holiday season, which is a lonely time for your love life Pisces. Well, shopping for just family can be fun too! And all those holiday romantic comedies you can enjoy with your mom. With the money you are saving, buy yourself a gift. Happy Holidays.
