He’s part of the team that created a new manmade reef off the coast of Ponte Vedra. The Starship Reef is being called the largest reef habitat creation project ever deployed. The reef’s project manager, Joe Kistel, says you can spot the structure 12 miles east of Mickler’s Landing. “I work for a company called TISIRI, that stands for ‘Think It, Sink It, Reef It,” before he said. “We come up with reef concepts that incorporate recycled material and build marine bio-diverse hot spots. Everyone from fishermen to scuba divers and environmentalists

are excited about Starship Reef.” Kistel also says the reef provides an area for invertebrate marine life to colonize, as well as shelter and resources for a great diversity of sea life. The Starship Reef was made possible by many organizations, including the Coastal Conservation Association.“As stewards of offshore Florida waters, TISIRI is also aware that creating marine habitat just isn’t enough. Underwater habitats visited by fishermen over the years tends to accumulate massive amounts of snagged fishing line and anchor rope. These items become entanglement hazards for marine life and often do not biodegrade. We coordinate reef clean-up events to remove as much of these as possible,” Kistel added. Pretty cool initiative! LEGACY OF LEADERS Deegan

The DONNA Foundation TheDONNAFoundation.org

This month’s Legacy Leader, Donna Deegan, of The Donna Foundation, sits down with Buzz TV Host Brittany Shaw for the latest news on the foundation. What inspired the mission behind The Donna Foundation?

DD: “They say marry your

passions for the greatest success. As a three-time breast cancer survivor who is trying to make a difference for families facing breast cancer, and someone who loves marathon running, it was a perfect convergence. Jeff Galloway, a 1972 olympic marathoner was the catalyst for the idea of starting the National Marathon to Finish Breast Cancer. He suggested we train some runners to do a marathon to raise money. The first year we raised more than 100k running the Jacksonville Marathon, and the lightbulb went off. I started doing some research

and realized there was no classic marathon distance race for breast cancer and convinced Jeff and my doctor Edith Perez to join me in creating our own race. That’s how we got started.” For every dollar we take in to the foundation, we are able to return five dollars in services to a recipient.” How can the community get more involved to make an impact for the Donna Foundation? DD: “The foundation is at the heart of everything we do. We try to take away the financial stress and confusion during a very difficult time. We have a care line that is staffed with case workers who help patients navigate their financial need along with other resources they may not even be aware are out there. We’ve started a new giving platform called the 1912 Society. It’s a sustainer program. For $19.12 a month you can fund a caseworker for a year. This is a really easy way to help.”

Hoods for Heroes (HFH) is a 501c3 non-profit whose mission is to donate chemical blocking particulate hoods to firefighters all across the country to reduce their increased risk of cancer. Hoods for Heroes’ main mission is to deliver life saving equipment to firefighters who wouldn’t have them otherwise. Hoods for Heroes owner Jeff Roundtree states, “Success to me is having a definable goal and fulfilling that goal.” It’s safe to say that this local 501c3 is exceeding these goals! Roundtree’s favorite way to get involved in the community is with the Rotary Club. His family is his biggest inspiration, Roundtree explains, “I want to teach my son two important lessons, you have to give before you get and no-one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.” Jeff Roundtree leaves us with this, “By adding value to society, your legacy is secure.”

CATHEDRAL ARTS PROJECT | CAPKIDS.ORG

BUZZ: What is the greatest thing about living in Jacksonville? MH: The growing arts, culture and the environment. BUZZ: What is your favorite nonprofit or civic organization and why? MH: The Cathedral Arts Project, because it is very important to ensure youth have access to creative youth development opportunities. I work there for a reason. BUZZ: Who inspires you and why? MH: Erin Gruwell. As someone who’s grown up doing a lot of writing, I appreciate the power of writing that can lead to personal and social change. She is also an example of an everyday hero who used what she knew how to do to help others. It transformed the students around her and led to the Freedom Writers movement that continues today. TRAVEL MINUTE

By Amy West

BUZZWORTHY BUSINESSES

UFM Underwear For Men UFMUnderwear.com

Welcome to the Amy West Travel Minute. Here are my five strategies to using a carry-on only when traveling. The first is your suitcase. Consider using a small suitcase that has an expansion ability so that if you have more stuff on your way home, you can expand it and bring it with you. I also like suitcases that have a built in electronic pocket so you can put a laptop and any small electronics in there. The age old question next is roll vs. fold: Which one works better for your clothes? Well 10 out of 10 travel experts will agree that rolling actually does win and the bonus is that it will keep your clothes somewhat wrinkle free. My next tip is using packing cubes. These are a great way to say organized. I like to use the kind that can expand, so I can stuff all of my shirts and tops, zip it closed, smoosh it down, and create more space and keep you organized. Next step think about using a pill case the next time you want to organize your jewelry. Their small, their little, they’re very affordable and they will keep you organized when it comes to your rings and small earrings. Finally, when you’re going, keep your shoes at a minimum. I definitely suggest you wear your biggest ones on the plane; That way you don’t have to worry about sticking them in your bag. You might feel a little bit of a struggle going through security, but ultimately wearing those bigger items will make room in your bag.

Elevate your status. It’s as easy as wearing the right pair of underwear. Jacksonville-based business, Underwear For Men, is dedicated to creating stylish, comfortable, and supportive underwear for, you guessed it, men. Started in 2013 through a Kickstarter Campaign and then launched at One Spark in 2015, UFM saw that men had to choose between comfort or support, and decided to give men’s underwear a much needed update. What started as a local company, UFM is now international, with warehouses in Jacksonville, Australia, and the EU, and President and CEO John Polidan says the wheels are in motion to start to manufacture in the U.S. UFM created a Patented Anti-chafe Adjustable Support Pouch System that offers isolation and support, and prevents skin-on-skin contact, meaning no more fidgeting or

He is a much happier man when he wears UFM’s - great support. I do believe you have a customer for life”. Which makes sense, because this is lightweight, breathable, and supportive underwear that feel good and look good whether they are under a suit, basketball shorts, or even a military uniform. Here are five ways to help you detox your wardrobe this season. Number one, start by splitting up your clothes by season, then ask yourself these questions: Is the piece still on trend? Or a timeless classic? Does it still fit you? If any of the answers is a “no,” sell or donate the items. Number two: If you haven’t worn something in over a year, then you don’t need it in your life. Number three: think about versatility. If you can’t wear an item in three different ways, then it doesn’t work in your wardrobe anymore. Number four: operate a one-in-one out policy. When you find something new, get rid of something you already have. Finally, once you’ve done your edits, sell or donate your unwanted clothes as soon as possible so you’re not tempted to go back to the pile! These five tips are sure to tidy up your wardrobe and have you feeling at ease.

adjusting. The adjustable mesh support pouch not only keeps men cool and dry, it also makes each pair custom, and each fit tailored. UFM’s product comes in sizes XS-5X, two material options, four styles, and two levels of support, so there is something for everyone. ARTS UNLEASHED

Ladies in Cinema Film Fest Jax

Mary McAllister

Facebook.com

marym@mri.jhu.edu

From the first time I picked up clay and paint at a neighbor’s house in a cool little blue apron (with pockets!), I knew I wanted to keep creating. Throughout elementary and middle school, art was part of the curriculum, but it wasn’t until high school that I pursued it seriously, with two public exhibits. Still, I never imagined that a career in art was a possibility. Then, I turned an academic scholarship into a way to attend the Maryland Institute College of Art. Although I couldn’t finish my degree there, I continued to paint, silkscreen, draw and just generally make things. After raising two children, a career as a writer/editor, and a return to school, art still beckoned. There were a few more exhibits in my second college endeavor, where I took art classes at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland. After a move to Florida, and an attempt at retirement, I decided I’d finally make time to make art. What interests me, and has always interested me, are patterns—of color, design and natural occurrences—and I try to paint with the idea of illuminating the patterns all around us.

Two Thumbs Up How Good Food Should Taste

When our drinks arrived, we were gifted with a basket of homemade chips and pork rinds. Crunchy and salty, I became a pork rind fan at first bite(the chips were equally top notch.)

Chicago based MLG restaurant opened its doors in downtown Jacksonville in the space previously occupied by Candy Apple Café. The new restaurant is a significant change from the previous one. What once was a Disney-esque atmosphere is no more; the restaurant redesigned into a classy black-andwhite, modern aesthetic that offers a casually elegant dining experience with full bar service. The new MLG menu is similar to the one in Chicago, with Jacksonville’s well known Chef Roderick “Sweet Pete” Smith personal take on all the dishes. We were quite impressed with the new look, and service for a newly opened restaurant was seamless. The menu offered a variety of items that will provide something for each guests enjoyment.

curious about and ordered was the Mac N’ Steak. The recipe contained grilled tenderloin tips, with chef’s mac n’ cheese, seasoned vegetables, and shaved truffles. Anyone who has eaten Chef Pete’s Mac n’ Cheese will vouch for its addictive qualities. Tonight was no different. There is a dessert menu, but we were way past being able to indulge ourselves, but to tease you, dear readers, here it is: Key Lime Pie, All American Our second choice and my favorite was the Wild Chocolate Chip Skillet, Jimmy’s Bread Pudding and Mushroom Flatbread, this dish was a tribute to the let’s close with Ferrel’s Famous Ice Cream Sundae. earthiness of mushrooms, paired with the Fontina Perhaps next visit it will just be the dessert menu cheese, fresh spinach, truffle, and balsamic it was a for us. flavor explosion in the mouth. We find MLG well worth the trip downtown for some upscale dining with reasonable prices. When you finish (if you have the room) you can go upstairs and get a candy fix, or go next door and look at all the fun items available for purchase.

GOOD EATZ by Anna Eatz Jax

FOODIE MINUTE

By Grant Smith

Murray’s Taco Bodega Murry’s Taco Bodega looks like a perfect fit for this up and coming historic neighborhood, and sure to be a hot spot for Jacksonville’s growing food community. The former home of B Street Eats is a splendid building with a comfortable interior that offers outside seating on the back patio with a welcoming fireplace perfect for this time of year. Heading up the kitchen, longtime Chef Ryan Randolph of Kitchen on San Marco and Congree and Penn fame has wowed many a patron with his style, and it looks like he will continue to do so at Murray’s. After looking over the menu, it was clear what a unique experience we had coming. Our first choice, The Murray, is the signature taco with housemade corned beef, dijon crema, and a zesty slaw. We paired that with the brussel sprout, black bean with chipotle crema, and roasted garlic taco. I have eaten many tacos in my days but never corned beef and indeed never brussel sprout. The flavor from the corned beef was so familiar and welcoming, paired with the fresh dijon and slaw made for a mouthwatering experience. Same for the sprout taco, well roasted and smokey just a hint of garlic, then a smattering a spice from the pepper was a total surprise but one you will want to visit again.

Hi I’m Grant Smith, welcome to my foodie minute, where I’ll to take you around town to Jacksonville’s most romantic restaurants! First stop: Orsay in Avondale . It is rustic french fair, casual yet sophisticated, but and has a must-try raw bar! Next, we’re going to San Marco to Town Hall, where you can find an intimate environment with a seasonal American menu, just remember to reserve a table in their open kitchen. Next, we’re heading downtown to Cowford’s Chophouse - white tablecloths, prime steaks, and good red wine. Don’t forget to dine on the second level and have a pre or post-dinner drink on the rooftop! Next stop is to Ponte Vedra’s Medure. Guests can enjoy a Mediterranean, French and Asian inspired menu with an intimate lounge. Grab a booth and enjoy live music Wednesday through Saturday! Finally, in Neptune beach, you’ll find Doro. Seasonal American fine dining, it’s small, it’s intimate, and I recommend you save this one for a special occasion. Hope you’ve enjoyed my Foodie Minute !

One of my favorite the Mexican Street corn, a sweet cob liberally dressed with cotija, adobo, cilantro with a lime crema. I would have preferred a little more heat, but the overall flavors were spot on. The last selections; The Double Play, Shrimp, with a green sauce, pico radish, and the ever tasty lime crema, and the Take it Easy a brisket, with an over easy egg, generous amounts of shredded jack ranchero. As you see I had mine minus the egg, I’m not a fan. The plump shrimp were not overpowered by the salsa verde, and the corn taco was the perfect delivery vessel. The Take it Easy taco contained tender brisket that was juicy with a generous portion of tasty meat that hit every flavor notes in my mouth. There are dessert offerings, which sadly I did not indulge in this time but next visit I will certainly savor the favorite Churro with Chocolate dipping sauce, or perhaps the Pineapple Taco. There are still many uneaten tacos to choose from, and I am going to make it my job to work my way through the menu. Murray’s Taco Bodega is a great spot to take friends for a delightful evening of good cheer, live music on the weekends outside on the patio lines up to be a perfect weekend adventure. Mid-Life! The Crisis Musical | Alhambra Theatre If you’re looking for a fun spot in historic San Marco, let me suggest Grape and Grain Exchange this quintessential neighborhood bar has it all. Along with the bar, a package store that offers rows and rows of some of the top-notch well know and challenging to find spirits available, live music and a back room that harks back to speakeasy days. I was my good fortune to have time to sit with Nick Hogan one of a hand full of top-notch barkeeps that set Grape and Grain Exchange apart from the others.

Tell us about yourself and the journey. I grew up here in Jacksonville, attended Florida State, moved to Gainesville then on toColorado to work in the mountains for a bit. Then back to Florida in St Augustine where I discovered bartending. I started working at Odd Birds, where I fell in love with the craft; the history of spirits, the dedication to the art and detail to craft bartending. I want to take it as far as I can, and that’s where I am today.

How long have you been tending bar? Just a little over three years now, I am relatively new to the game, and I’m really into it.

What do you enjoy most about Grape and Grain Exchange? Grape and Grain has been a wonderful learning experience for me as far as the package side we have an opportunity to do everything here. We have a robust wine program, as you see the spirits you can tell inventory is enormous. Grape and Grain Exchange is a wellrounded bar, with a neighborhood that is quite supportive. Plus the family here is incredible; I love all these guys.

What turns you on about bartending? I think it’s a creative outlet for me, like coming up with conceptual cocktails where I like to put a story behind them.

FEBRUARY HOROSCOPE

by Kyle, Astrologer Extraordinaire

ARIES (MARCH 21- APRIL 19) It’s time to take to the high road and spend time with all those annoying people, aka “friends”, you’ve been blowing off. Sure they are not cool unlike yourself, but you are turning over a new leaf this year. You can go back to being a jackass, say…. about April.

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 – OCTOBER 22) Looks like one night flings are your thing this month. So what if your hookup will have way too many flaws, it’s just one night. And then there’s the awkward morning, some bad memories, and pointing fingers next time you run across him/her. But hey, sometimes it’s worth it.

TAURUS (APRIL 20 – MAY 20) Looks like the job and whole work routine is making you over-stressed. Time to get out there and cut it loose. You should burn up a “sick” day in the middle of the week. That should show your boss what you think of TPS reports on Thursday morning.

SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23 – NOVEMBER 21) It seems you have some competition with your latest crush. Do what most “leaders” in politics do. Slander, put down, and point out all that is wrong about the competition. After that you can maybe mention something positive about yourself. Viola! You’re in.

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUNE 21) The new moon in Capricorn is firing up a new intimate chapter in your life. Or maybe it’s because you realize how boring you were in 2013 and you have that carnal urge to be something more this year. Nah, it’s probably that whole new moon thing, not your boring life creating it. CANCER (JUNE 22 – JULY 22) A lot of new resolutions about finding love in 2014. Time to get that online profile in shape. If a little white lie here or there is needed, then go ahead. It’s the Internet! They should know better than to believe everything on the web, Mr. Available… I mean, Dr. Available. LEO (JULY 23 – AUGUST 22) Love is a calling… and calling and calling. You would think they would get the picture by you never answering their call (thank you Caller ID). While you are out looking for something better, take the time and let the stage-5-clingeralways-caller know it’s not because you don’t like her or him, it’s because your phone is always turned off. They may be dumb enough to believe you. VIRGO (AUGUST 23 – SEPTEMBER 22) You want romance this month. Oddly, you know what you want, and you aren’t going to stop until you get it. Figures, you want some perfect Valentine’s Day romance. I feel sorry for the ones who will attempt just to come short of your insanely high standards.

ON TAP

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 – DECEMBER 21) Don’t you hate it when someone acts overly available and they are the only ones who don’t notice it? Hmm, it’s time to check one’s self out on this one. Not saying you are annoying, but you are probably one of those friends Aries will be calling this month. CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 – JANUARY 19) Lucky for you, your mate will actually give you energy this month instead of sucking life out of you. Crazy, I know. Use this time to do all those things your mate would typically not approve of. This may be your last time to enjoy it. AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 – FEBRUARY 18) A friend of mine gave me some great advice that I am going to pass on to you Aquarius. She told me, “Avoid making mistakes. This will relieve stress.” Shockingly deep thought, I know. Now that you know the big secret, use it wisely. PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 – MARCH 20) Valentine’s Day is around the corner. Thus, it’s time for romantic turmoil once again. By now you think you would be use to this. Maybe Cupid will feel remorse and toss and arrow or two your way. I doubt it, but there is always hope.

Hey, Jax! The first major beerfest of the year is almost here! The 6th Annual Riverside Craft Beer Festival presented by Riverside Rotary (“RCBF”) returns to the Riverside Arts Market under the Fuller-Warren Bridge in Jacksonville on Saturday, February 23, 2019. Map your course through six geographical sections and sample beers from Florida, regional, national and international breweries. Last year, the RCBF introduced a new layout with breweries grouped according to geographical location. The regional layout will return this year, said Callie Hugo, RCBF Committee Member and Liaison for Riverside Rotary and Community Hospice & Palliative Care in an interview. A number of local Jacksonville breweries will have a strong presence in the Florida section, along with many other favorite breweries across the state. In addition, attendees will enjoy beers from breweries located in the Southeast, Northeast, Midwest, West

Coast and International. The current brewery list includes just under 100 breweries. With cooperation from various distributors, RCBF brings a wide variety of beer to the fest tables. “We have relationships with a great group of distributors around Jacksonville,” said Callie. “These distributors are essential to make sure that our event goes off without a hitch, as well as supply beer that we know will be enjoyed by all who attend.” It’s not “just” about the beer, either! RCBF benefits Community Hospice & Palliative Care, which has been “an instrumental part in our community for the past 40 years,” said Callie. Your entry fee to the beerfest helps support this organization, along with its “Community PedsCare” program. Community PedsCare serves over 175 children and their families daily across Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns Counties, said Callie. The services include palliative care for children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions, in addition to hospice care for children and their

families while they focus on life and living. The vast majority of the children are enrolled in palliative care services, which are not reimbursed by insurance. Since 2016, the RCBF has donated over $255,000 to Community PedsCare, with $80,000 raised in 2018, Callie added. Riverside Rotary Club believes that the Community PedsCare helps the community through a program with no to very little funding, and Rotary looks forward to giving these families hope during difficult times. New to the fest this year is live music by “Songs from the Road Band,” which has received accolades in the Bluegrass, Americana, and Jazz genres. The band will perform songs from four studio albums in addition to crowd favorites. Of course, with beer and music, there must be food! Fear not, because with ten food trucks on site with a variety of eats available for purchase, there will again be something to please all palates.
