She’s a student turned activist, part of the national movement started by the survivors of the tragic mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Mia Cleary, a senior at Ponte Vedra High School, has emerged as one of the North Florida faces of the “Road to Change” movement. It’s part youth rally, part voter registration drive as the young activists make stops in cities across America this summer. Cleary helped lead the recent “Road to Change Jax” event at the Jacksonville Landing, followed by a town hall discussing gun safety on the UNF campus.

ON A MISSION

business leaders going above and beyond

Rena Coughlin

Nonprofit Center of Northeast Florida

BUZZ: How are you involved with City Rescue Mission? Rena: I am the Executive Director and CEO of the Nonprofit Center of Northeast Florida and we work directly with City Rescue Mission.

“Seeing what happened in Parkland changed me,” she says. “I knew that could have been my school. We’re going to keep going and bring change to this country.”

BUZZ: What is the importance of non-profit organizations?

The youth movement around gun reform includes calls for universal comprehensive background checks, funds to research the root causes of gun violence, and a ban on semi-automatic assault rifles, among other measures.

Rena: First of all leadership, employment and contributions to the community both socially and economically. It is also important to think about the impact that nonprofit organizations have on your life everyday. Imagine a world without non-profit hospitals, hospice care, education, workforce development, community development, food distribution and art! Non-profits are a significant part of not only quality

“We support the 2nd Amendment,” Cleary says. “We just want a safer place to go to school and a safer country.” Wherever you stand on this issue, there’s not much debate on the commitment of the students. And make sure to tune into First Coast Connect each weekday morning at 9AM to hear from the most compelling newsmakers of the First Coast!

of life but also our social, cultural, healthcare and educational quality of life. BUZZ: Can you tell us a little about City Rescue Mission and non-profits as a business? Rena: First of all the research we’ve done here in our community shows that non-profits are the third largest civilian employers in Jacksonville, somewhere north of 60,000 people work for non-profits, so we pay a lot of payroll taxes and contribute a lot to the economy. BUZZ: What are the greatest challenges for non-profits in Northeast Florida? Rena: Awareness. Many people think that the government is contributing to these organizations but it’s actually not, individual contributors fund most non-profits. So I always encourage people to reach out if they want to get involved.

Legacy of Leaders

Taylor Lawrence Grumpy’s Restaurant - Manager

BUZZ: So Grumpy’s has been around for a long time, but has made a lot of changes lately, what’s the occasion? TL: Well we got new ownership; we’ve been doing

a lot of renovations, a lot of new menu updates and added a banquet room for special events or occasions. Basically we really revamped all the things that made Grumpys’ great before.

BUZZ: Would you say the food is still the main attraction? TL: Absolutely, the food is delicious we have a lot of good choices, we’re

known for serving breakfast and lunch any time of day and we always have something on special.

BUZZ: So you were nominated in 12 different categories for Best of Jax,

most of them for food. What would be some of the best items on the menu?

TL: For breakfast I would definitely say the country-fried steak. It’s not

your average country-fried steak; we use our sausage gravy instead of the traditional white gravy, which definitely takes it over the top. For lunch you have to go with the Reuben, huge and delicious.

BUZZ: So what is your position at Grumpy’s and where are they located? TL: I’m a manager at our new location, which is off of Kingsley Ave in Orange Park right next to the railroads. Come out and see us!

Exclusive Interview with Army Veteran Gregory Grant How did you transition from military service to the world of business? Veterans make outstanding entrepreneurs due to the leadership and self-management skills ingrained in military service members that are undoubtedly critical cornerstones of operational success for emerging enterprises. As soldiers, we are taught to lead by example and to perform our duties proficiently. We then transfer our military values to our companies creating successful companies that conclusively stimulate the local Jacksonville economy and ultimately foster a mindset of generational wealth for veterans and their families.

What inspired you to become a Vetrepreneur? I was inspired by the soldiers that separated from the military before my exit that ventured into veteran entrepreneurship. What currently keeps me motivated is the validation of significant media publications that have featured my company such as Forbes, The Business Journals, Huffington Post, MSNBC, and many others. Recently, I have been motivated and inspired by our city and military leaders who are increasing their investment in our veterans business ecosystem. So naturally, people such as Mayor Lenny Curry, Brigadier General (ret) Michael Fleming and Bill Spann come to mind. With the high concentration of veterans in Northeast Florida, we have a phenomenal opportunity. To memorialize our local Vetrepreneurs, my company will be launching our Grant Global Directory App on Andriod devices Veterans Day 2018.

ARTS UNLEASHED

Jacksonville Artists Teaching in Africa CulturalCollaborative.org

Two Jacksonville artists, Marsha Hatcher and Annelies Dykgraaf, wanted to share their art with children in Africa. Annelies was born and raised in Nigeria and Marsha has made a number of past trips to Africa and knew they could make a difference in the lives of young people there.

Kim Beaulieu KimBeaulieu.net

Kim Beaulieu is a multi-media artist who has a love for all forms of art and the outdoors. Early on, she would capture the beauty around her through her drawings, paintings and photography. As she grew up, life took her on a path in which she was able to channel her creativity through her work as a hairstylist, nail technician and salon owner. Kim’s life changed dramatically in 2012 when her mom was diagnosed with cancer and because of this, she rediscovered her love for photography, painting and drawing. She graduated from the University of North Florida in April 2017. Kim earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in Photography and a minor in Business Administration and Painting, Drawing & Printmaking.

This time they went to Accra, Ghana to work with Aba House which is a Cross Cultural Collaborative: An educational non-profit that invites people to Ghana to promote cultural exchange and understanding through the arts. They coordinated the trip with Ellie Schimelman, the President and Founder, who asked if we they would be willing to teach art classes to kids and they agreed. They ended up teaching 18 kids aged from 3-14. Some were just from surrounding neighbors and others from a school. They taught the kids print making techniques, painting and wax resist coloring, but they learned something too. They were also taught the art of Adinkra printing and the meaning of the symbols which can be found just about anywhere in Africa used on fabrics and in their art. They also were taught the art of tie dyeing fabric and batiking. They would recommend this art residency to anyone. It lets you experience the culture and people of Ghana on a more practical level and is not so touristy.

Two Thumbs Up How Good Food Should Taste

Greek Street Kitchen and Bar Article by Anna Eatz Jax

Where: 4332 University Blvd S, Jacksonville, FL 32216 Price: $$ Contact: GreekStreetJax.com

As long- time fans of Greek Street Kitchen and Bar, my friend and I made the trip for the best Greek food in town. As always owner Peter Vorrias, his sister and head chef Eva La Rosa were at the helm doing what they do best. Recently nominated best Greek Restaurant in Jacksonville, once you dine there, well, the food tells the story. The space on University Blvd. is roomy and well put together.

We decided on the Greek Street Spread (feta and roasted peppers), Eggplant Spread, Veggie Keftedes and Spanakopita; accompanied by soft, warm pita bread. We delighted in the flavors of the Eggplant Spread, and the crust for the Spanakopita was rich and flaky with a tasty spinach filling.

My friend who opted to eat vegan, chose the Vegan Gyro, with Zen Butcher gyro meat with hummus and a side of Aegean Slaw. I have tasted Zen The look is not old Greece but Greece as it is today; a modern city alive Butcher products and have been pleased with everything they make. with commerce and tourism. Aroi Thai

It’s always good when a new locally owned restaurant opens in my neighborhood. So when I saw Aroi Thai opened its doors, I was there and have returned on several occasions since. The new owners are amiable and the staff is equally so. They have created a warm space with lite jazz tunes playing in the background. On the maiden voyage, we just scratched what was available on the menu, which offers street food, tapas and poké. The star of the Tapas menu for me was the Jalapeno Rock, the presentation was quite eye-catching, and if we indeed eat with our eyes first, it was doing what the chef intended. Fresh sliced tuna, dressed in fresh ginger, garlic and a jalapeno slice, with a side of ponzu sauce, it delivered on every level.

We then moved into the street food favorite’s portion of the menu where we opted for the Pad Kee Mao, (Spicy Basil Noodles). Flat noodles blended with egg, onions, scallions, snow peas, carrots and celery in a smooth brown sauce. We asked for a bump up in the heat index and the chef gladly obliged us. This is a must order again item. In the beverage department; a selection of local and imported beer, wine and my favorite Thai Tea. As I stated, I have been back to eat in and take out at least a dozen times. It’s a welcome addition to a neighborhood that offers a wide variety of cuisine types, Aroi Thai fills the Asian/Thai gap and it does it quite well.

GAME FACE: Local Athletes of Jacksonville LEON JACOBS

Jacksonville Jaguars

AJ CANN

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars 7th round pick out of Wisconsin might be quite the find for the front office. The Jaguars had to replace the retiring Paul Posluszny as their strong side linebacker and the rookie looks to be the front runner to do it. Jacobs could slide into a situation where he is playing with the most talented defense in the NFL.

It looked like it might be a question mark for AJ Cann to keep his starting right guard job in 2018, but the fourth year lineman out of South Carolina squashed that idea early in training camp. Cann is playing good football and has helped solidify the only real weak spot on the Jags line. Head Coach Doug Marrone says Cann benefited from the new helmet rule in the NFL because now the right guard is using better technique.

LOGAN COOKE

COREY GRANT

Jacksonville Jaguars

It’s not often the punter is highlighted, but Logan Cooke has been a player that is fun to watch in the preseason. The 6-foot 5-inch tall specialist has hit some booming punts and shown the ability to knock the ball dead inside the 20. Cooke grew up on a farm in Mississippi lassoing steer and riding horses. 16

He might be one of the underrated weapons on offense in the NFL. Corey Grant continues to impress when given the opportunities and it will be interesting to watch how much Grant gets the ball in 2018. Grant is a good special teams player too but he allows the Jags to do some different things with their playbook because of his speed and skill set.

The Dolphins have a young team with only two in the senior class this year, so there’s room for a lot of growth this season. Check out the JU women’s soccer team at Southern Oak Stadium this fall.

Laura Kane joins the Dolphins following a stint at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, where she was the assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator during the 2017 season, handling coaching, video analysis, scouting and travel planning duties. A member of the 2017 Regional Staff of the Year, she helped the program turn a 3-12-1 record from the previous season into a 17-5-1 showing and a trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament. After winning the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament, the Mountain Lions hosted contests in the first and second round for the first time in school history, winning three matches to advance to their first-ever Division II Final Four appearance.

JU concludes its August slate and begins September with a three-game home stand in the Bold City, starting with a contest against Manhattan College on Friday, Aug. 31. The game marks the second-straight season a New York opponent has traveled to Southern Oak Stadium, with JU defeating LIU Brooklyn at home last September. The Dolphins look to keep up success against the Eagles of Winthrop on Sunday, Sept. 2, who they took down in the only previous meeting between the two in 2010. The second ACC school to meet JU in 2018 comes to the River City in the form of the University of Miami on Thursday, Sept. 6, marking the teams’ first matchup in three years.

“As a staff we are very excited about this 2018 class and believe it has a lot of character,” said head coach Derek Marinatos. “This class has a lot of young, talented in-state Florida players combined with a few transfer players with experience in key positions. We look forward to getting to work with this exciting class of student-athletes.”

One notable recruit from right here in Jacksonville, Mirza Nevoric, was a four-year varsity player for Samuel W. Wolfson and was the team MVP in 2017 and 2018. He was also named to the all-conference teams in 2016, 2017 and 2018. The Jacksonville native netted a total of 110 goals in his high school career with 24 assists. He played four years of club soccer under John McLelland at Florida Elite Soccer Academy. Head coach Marinatos stated, “Mirza was an exciting late addition to the 2018 class from our winter ID camp. He has a very good soccer IQ and an ability to help create and score goals coupled with a very strong work ethic. He is also an excellent student with a very high GPA and another local Jacksonville area product.” This season is sure to be one you don’t want to miss at the University of North Florida.

CATCHIN' A BUZZ Interview by Anna Eatz Jax

GABRIELLE SAUL Bar manager

Rue Saint Marc If I asked you to make me a cocktail with no limitations, what pops into your head?

I would ask a few questions first; do you want something straight spirit or perhaps something with citrus juice in it? Do you have a preference in mind? Are there some you like and some not so much? I answered but never mentioned Tequila, and true to form she was going to challenge me, it was a total mind changer about a spirit I seldom drink. Matador: • 0.75 oz. Reposado Tequila

Nested in San Marco between Hendricks and San Marco Blvd sits Rue Saint Marc, one of Jacksonville’s trendiest food and cocktail stops. Partner, bar manager, bartender or “Bar Chef “ as she was dubbed; Gabrielle Saul holds it all together. With an impressive list of craft cocktails with her name on them, I had to know more about this woman, here are her thoughts.

• 0.75 oz. Red Bull Pepper Juice • 0.75 oz. Roasted Pineapple Cordial • 0.75 oz. Ancho Chili Liqueur • 0.75 oz. Lime

What excites you about bartending?

• Chipotle Rim

The customers, and how excited they get when they ask me to create new drinks for them. Then seeing the satisfaction once they taste the drink and realize it hits every aspect of their palate. Almost the same as a Chef when they create a dish that entirely satisfies the customer.

What are your favorite cocktails to make, and why?

I think one of my favorites and a best seller is the Peter Piper, I did not expect to get so much success with this drink, we did review of the top ten cocktails for the last six months and this particular drink ranked at number two.

change. We joke with that we decided to have our mid-life crisis together.”

Several new area breweries are coming on board during the last few months of 2018. Say Hello to SJ Brewing Company, the first brewery to open in Yulee, just north of Jacksonville. The area’s newest brewery opened its tap room on Saturday, Aug. 4. Although it is currently serving guest beers from local and regional breweries on its 12 taps, look for house beers to start appearing soon. The bar also offers wines and sodas. The venue offers indoor and outdoor seating. Inside, the tap room features a bar on one side, plenty of space to move around and ample seating at tables and chairs. Guests can watch two TVs or play an assortment of table and board games. The brewhouse sits in the back, on the other side of a half wall. Outside is a deck with umbrellas for enjoying beer in the sunshine and breezes. Artwork on the tap room wall features the labels of the new brewery’s upcoming five core beers: Yulee Pale Ale, Bunny Brown Ale, I Gose With You, Stop Jonesing IPA and Battle Plan Imperial Stout. Yes, there’s an “S” and a “J” behind the brewery and, also working behind the bar. Get to know

Shaun and JoAnn Stewart, the husband and wife team brewing up the area’s newest beers, in this Q-and-A interview. We know that the “SJ” refers to Shaun and JoAnn. How did you get started in brewing beer? Says JoAnn: “Shaun started brewing when I bought him a Mr. Beer kit, after we started dating in 2011. Shaun quickly became hooked and has upgraded since then.” Why Yulee? Shaun has lived in Yulee since 2007, and after they were married, JoAnn joined him there. According to JoAnn: “We were spending time driving to Jacksonville for brewery visits, and we decided to bring the brewery experience to the Yulee area.” What made you decide to open a brewery? How long has the brewery concept been in the works? “We regularly meet up with family and/or friends to play games, eat dinner, and drink craft beer. There hasn’t been anything like that in Nassau county – until we opened! With “prior life” backgrounds in the pressure washing business and the mortgage industry, we were both ready for a

The buildout phase of your tap room seems to have happened pretty quickly. What was the timing like? “We started the process in March 2017, and first worked with the county to change an ordinance to allow the brewery in Nassau County. That part lasted until November. In the meantime, we were able to narrow down our possibility of locations. We chose where we are because of the easy access to food, and the area is growing quickly. We are also very close to home. We signed our lease on April 1, and had already worked on getting plans and contractor bids in place. Towers Construction completed the buildout by the first week in July, and we couldn’t be happier with their work. We then had the rest of the month to do the rest!” And, the question on everyone’s minds: When do you anticipate brewing your own beers and tapping them? Any idea which ones will appear first? “Our brewhouse plumbing was finished the week after we opened, and we are looking to get our first beer in the tanks as soon as possible. Our first house beer will be our Pale Ale, which we anticipate tapping over Labor Day weekend.” Congratulations to SJ Brewing! SJ Brewing is located at 463646 State Rd. 200, Suite 13, Yulee. Tap room hours are currently Tuesday-Friday, 3-10pm; and noon-10pm Saturday and Sunday; closed on Monday.

SEPTEMBER HOROSCOPE

by Kyle, Astrologer Extraordinaire

ARIES (MARCH 21- APRIL 19) “Your way or no way” is your motto this month. Don’t waste your time considering what others may think, because we both know you aren’t going to listen. This is why writing advice for you is so, so ironic. TAURUS (APRIL 20 – MAY 20) Things are not what they may seem with the person you are with or trying to be with. Take this advice and go throw game on someone else. Even if I’m wrong, who cares! Doesn’t affect me, and there are plenty of people out there to make mistakes on. GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUNE 21) If you are looking for someone who is smart and attractive like yourself, then you first better buy a clue on you and your looks. And don’t forget about the rule of plus or minus 1. If you are 5, you can only go after 4, 5 and 6’s. This should help with the let downs you’ve been dealing with lately.

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 – OCTOBER 22) As much fun as it can be flirting via email with the person you met the other night, it is time to move either on or to the next level. Just because you are happy with the online connection you are having, the other is ready for some real intimacy (as in clicking on you and not a mouse). SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23 – NOVEMBER 21) You found an online ad you like, but don’t want to cough up the $19 to meet them. Listen cheapo, you will rent a crap $2 romantic comedy flick and wish you could have a happy ending, but not spend 20 bucks to meet someone. Well, enjoy your homemade popcorn, your comfy afghan, and your loneliness. SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 – DECEMBER 21) This is the perfect time to go to one of those speed-dating mixers your friend has been trying to drag you to. Remember you are trying to capture someone’s attention. Thus, you need to say bold, crazy statements. If it doesn’t work, who cares? What are the odds you’ll see those single losers again?

CANCER (JUNE 22 – JULY 22) The Stars are saying you are recharged this month. I was unaware of you being tired. This month you need to use that energy and spread some positivity. With positivity brings fun. With fun brings relationships. With relationships, well, you get it. Go spread.

CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 – JANUARY 19) I think this month you might find that perfect mate or at least someone better. You have been through enough horrible relationships lately; you are bound to find someone tolerable soon. This isn’t a premonition. I’m just doing the math.

LEO (JULY 23 – AUGUST 22) Did you know you have a 12th house of closure and blurred boundaries? Neither did I. Mars is in Cancer and messing your stuff up this month. Your normally feistiness will even disappear and all sorts of oddness. Thus, stay home.

AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 – FEBRUARY 18) How’s the queen of drama doing? Who you? Yes, you. You love drama. Don’t believe me? I bet you go tell someone about this horoscope and make a big issue out of it, thus proving me correct. It will just kill you not to show someone or talk about these 51 words of crap I just typed.

VIRGO (AUGUST 23 – SEPTEMBER 22) Your subtle wit apparently is working this month. What others use to think was creepy, somehow now find it oddly charming and interesting. I don’t know why, I truly don’t, but even the sun shines on a dog’s brown star sometimes.

PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 – MARCH 20) It seems as if all your friends are having relationship issues, and they are going to annoy you with, “What should I do?” Like you care or even know how to answer that. You have your own issues, like finding someone who’ll date you. Your best advice is to tell them to talk to someone who has actually been in a relationship.
