1st Place Sports: Running Jacksonville Since 1978 By Jenn Leonard
It all began in 1978. Husband and wife team Doug and Jane Alred, dedicated runners themselves, decided to become business partners and take their passion for the sport to the next level. Hoping to appeal to the running community, they opened the first 1st Place Sports retail store on Baymeadows Road. “Once we had the first store open, we needed a way to attract runners to our new business, so we thought a running event from our store would be the perfect way to accomplish that goal,” Doug Alred said. “Little did we know that this was the beginning of a perfect business model for success.” Now, almost 40 years later, that dream has taken firm root in the Jacksonville running community. There are six retail locations, five in Jacksonville and one in St. Augustine, offering everything from running and walking shoes and apparel to GPS watches and recovery aids. Individual stores host complimentary group runs, clinics on good running form, and regularly bring in different industry professionals to discuss products, recovery, nutrition and injury prevention. In addition, staff members visit local health fairs to share information on the benefits of running. The 1st Place Sports Race Division is responsible for the management or timing of almost 100 events a year across the Northeast Florida region. Races range from local 5Ks with a few hundred runners, to such nationally renowned races as the Gate River Run, touted as the largest 15K in the country, and the Ameris Bank Marathon, which is about to celebrate its 35th year.
Doug Alred is thrilled at how the locals have responded. “The Jax running community has really been very supportive of our stores and races,” said Doug Alred. “The community seems so close. It is wonderful to be able to help runners with their sport and to provide a way for them to pursue being physically fit. The running events have become very large social events. It is very pleasing to see so many smiling faces on race morning.” 1st Place Sports has earned its reputation as one of Competitor’s Top 50 Running Stores in America through the relationships it prides itself on building. Long-time runners and those new to the sport are always welcomed and encouraged in their efforts. Staff is trained in an extensive fitting process to help match runners and walkers with the shoe that best fits their gait, training goals and lifestyle. They also stay up to date on the latest industry updates and technology. More importantly, the Alreds’ employees are happy to offer advice on training plans, suggestions for great races, recommendations on nutrition and any other words of wisdom in which their patrons might be interested. The Alreds believe this is what makes the difference. “Our commitment is what sets us apart,” Jane Alred said. “Sure, it is a business, but it is a labor of love.” As for the future? Doug and Jane Alred are pretty clear on their direction in the years to come. “We hope that 1st Place Sports will always be the headquarters for running in North Florida,” Doug Alred said.

sound OFF: JACKSONVILLE GRAND PRIX RACES ST. PADDY’S RUN 10K March All decked out in green to commemorate St. Patrick’s Day. These racers run and have fun in the St. Paddy’s Run 10K and 5K. Runners wind their way through the beautiful Evergreen Cemetery, which is lined with stately oaks and magnolia trees. Participants receive technical shirts and free beer. The race benefits Springfield Improvement Association and Archives, which works to enhance the quality of life in historic Springfield by beautifying public spaces, educating the community and preserving the area’s history. RUN 13.1 March Run 13.1 is a half marathon race that starts and finishes at the Jacksonville Landing. About 1,000 runners participate each year and choose between the half marathon and the 5K. Both races begin and end at the same place, with the half marathon continuing to make a loop through Evergreen Cemetery before returning to the finish line. A post-race celebration is held at the Jacksonville Landing and features music, beer, and food. RUN TO THE SUN 8K April The Run to the Sun 8K starts and finishes at the Orange Park Kennel Club on Highway 17. This is a fast and flat 5 mile race running out and back along the St. Johns River. Visit FloridaStriders.com for more information. MEMORIAL DAY 5K May This is a fast 5K that runs a new course, which starts and finishes on Stowe Avenue beside Orange Park Town Hall Park. The course is well shaded. There is a festival with lots of food after the race. Visit FloridaStriders.com for more information. RUN FOR THE PIES 5K June It’s a race with a sweet reward; the annual Run for the Pies. It started in 1979 and is an Open 5K and Nike Championship Race with a chance to win money, awards and of course, pies. The Open 5K is for all runners and walkers except those who run in the Championship race. Pies will also be given to the top runners. The Nike Championship Race is open to men who have run under 17 minutes and women under 20 minutes. Nike running shoes will be given to each male who breaks 16:15 and to each female who breaks 19:00. The races are followed by a block party, which features pie eating contests, live bands, and free beer. WINE AND CHOCOLATE RUN April Another reason to run – Wine and Chocolate. The Wine and Chocolate 5k takes place every April in San Marco and has an estimated 1,000 runners each year. It was started in 2015 to benefit the ongoing beautification of San Marco. The 5K course will start in front of Peterbrooke Chocolate and finish in front of 1st Place Sports. Runners will finish with an awesome wine and chocolate party in San Marco Square. All participants will get a custom designed wine glass and will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win prizes from the San Marco merchants. CELEBRATION RUN July The Celebration Run to Celebrate America. This annual Celebration 5K is a perfect way to kick-off the Independence Day Holiday. Every July 4, about 1,200 runners start the day early with the 5K run or one-mile fun run. Runners can stick around for the post-race celebration, which features a watermelon festival. There is a watermelon eating contest, seed spitting contest and a contest for most patriotic costume. There is also free food and plenty of fun for the whole family. TOUR DE PAIN August The Tour de Pain is a race series designed to test the ability to run three different races in a 24-hour period. Each year, about 1,200 runners take part in the event. The first race is on a Friday evening and is a four-mile beach run in Jacksonville Beach. The second race is a 5K, which is held early the next morning and starts
at 1st Place Sports on Baymeadows Road. The third race is a mile sizzler later that afternoon. It is a one mile double loop from Hemming Plaza. The runner’s time in each of the three events will be added together to determine their place for the Tour de Pain. Runners do have the option to pick just one race, which they can sign up for individually. TIJUANA FLATS SUMMER BEACH RUN August It’s the oldest race on the First Coast and it’s still running more than 50 years later. The Summer Beach Run began in 1965 and started with just 25 to 30 runners. Now the race has grown to about 1,500 runners and is called the Tijuana Flats Summer Beach Run. The 5 mile run and one-mile fun run is an evening run that takes off from the Seawalk Pavilion. Cash awards are given to the top overall runners and there is also a chance to win a beach towel. The post-race celebration features free tacos from Tijuana Flats, free beer and a live band. The event is presented by JTC Running and benefits the Tijuana Flats Just in Queso Foundation. RUNJAX LABOR DAY RUN September A great way to start your Labor Day on the First Coast. The RunJax Labor Day Run has been going on since 2010. Each year, about 1,000 runners gather early Labor Day morning at 1st Place Sports on Baymeadows Road for the 5K race and onemile fun run. Runners wind their way through San Jose neighborhoods, racing for awards and prizes. The top three male and female overall will receive prize money up to $150. EVERGREEN PUMPKIN RUN October A great way to celebrate Halloween – a frighteningly fun run through a cemetery. The Evergreen Pumpkin Run is a 10-mile run or a 5K that winds through Evergreen Cemetery. Pumpkins line the course inside the cemetery, which has a canopy of stately oaks and magnolias. The 10-mile race will take runners outside the cemetery onto city streets. 5K runners will remain in the cemetery grounds for the entire race. This race is sponsored by The Evergreen Cemetery Association and benefits the Jacksonville Historical Society. MANDARIN RUN 10K November It’s all about health and fitness at this Mandarin Run. The Bailey’s Health and Fitness Mandarin Run lets runners choose between the 10K and 5K race, which both start and finish at Bailey’s Gym on San Jose at Loretto Road in the Mandarin South Shopping Center. It is a flat and fast course that winds through some nice neighborhoods. It is also USA Track and Field certified. Prize money is available for the top overall runners in the 10K. THANKSGIVING DAY CLASSIC November It is a Thanksgiving Day tradition on the First Coast. The Thanksgiving Distance Classic was first started in 1984. It is a half marathon, 6K and Turkey Trot, onemile fun run. About 5,000 runners take part each year. Runners start along San Jose Blvd. and work their way through the Mandarin neighborhoods before making their way back to Pickwick Plaza parking lot. All half marathon and 6K runners who complete the race receive a finisher medal. A post-race celebration follows the run. AMERIS BANK MARATHON December It is the city’s oldest marathon and celebrates the beauty of Jacksonville. The Jacksonville Bank Marathon started in 1984 and is a full marathon, half marathon and 5K race. All races start together in front of The Bolles School and wind through Mandarin streets and along the St. Johns River and back to The Bolles School finish line. The marathon is USA Track and Field certified and is a Boston Marathon qualifier race. The half marathon is also a certified race. Both races are time-limited. VYSTAR NEW YEAR’S EVE RUN December The VyStar 5K Run is an official event of the Gator Bowl Associations TaxSlayer Bowl. The event is held on New Year’s Eve.

The GATE River Run is the largest 15K race in the United States and will once again serve as the USA 15K Championship with America’s top Olympic athletes competing for $85,000 in prize money. Last year over 24,000 runners and walkers participated in one of the featured events including the 15K, The Florida Times-Union 5K for Charity, the Junior River Run, and the Brooks Rehabilitation Challenge Mile.

New Clay County Sheriff Darryl Daniels is the first AfricanAmerican sheriff in the county, and one of the first in the state. (Former Duval County Sheriff Nat Glover became the state’s first black sheriff since Reconstruction a couple of decades ago.) As he begins his new post, Daniels has assembled his command staff and says he’s organizing community walks to get more Clay Countians in regular contact with their police force. “I’m excited about what we’re planning,” he told First Coast Connect. Daniels is a 31-year law enforcement veteran who recently retired as director of patrol and enforcement with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. And, Daniels says he’s open to considering body cameras for his police force.
Tim Tebow is a two-time national champion, first round NFL draft pick, and Heisman trophy winner. He played three years in the NFL for the Denver Broncos, New York Jets and New England Patriots. Currently, he co-hosts the SEC network’s “SEC Nation,” a traveling pre-game show. He also contributes to ESPN’s SportsCenter, ESPN Radio, and the network’s Heisman Trophy coverage, offering in-depth perspective as a legendary SEC player. Tebow is currently signed to play professional baseball with the New York Mets.

Dr. April Murdaugh is The Center’s Founder and Executive Director. She struggled with financial problems most of her adult life. She experienced foreclosure, repossessions, poor credit scores and homelessness. The Center was established to provide basic financial programs to high school and college age youth who may not have had the financial education necessary to make responsible decisions. Dr. Murdaugh hosted “The Economic Power Hour,” a radio show on Jacksonville’s AM 1360 focused on financial topics for adults. She is currently a Logistics professor, author of the blog “Broke-i$m” and a single mom of three wonderful children.

What areas of law does the firm practice?
We are a six-person law firm. We’re boutique-oriented, meaning we don’t practice in all areas. We really focus on corporate law along with mergers and acquisitions work. We also have a large presence in the healthcare industry.
With corporate law, what type of services do you offer?
Anything you can think of with a business. If you’re looking to start a business, we help form companies, set up ownership structures and so on. Then, on the back end, mergers and acquisitions work, whether it’s people that are selling their companies, people looking to buy or roll up like practices or industry groups, we do that work as well.
How long have you practiced? We’ve been independent since about 2008.
How did you get associated with the firm?
So back when I was in law school at the University of Memphis, I clerked down here with the predecessor firm – we split off from a bigger firm – and so I had the option to stay in Memphis or move down here, and I chose Jacksonville.
What is your favorite part about being a lawyer?
Helping people and helping businesses. It’s really neat for people to come in and say “I have this problem” and we can sit around, brainstorm and talk with them to solve their problem.

What made you gravitate towards immigration law? I grew up in a bicultural home and know the many challenges that immigrants face once they move here. I started off interpreting for attorneys in Atlanta when I was in undergrad. Once I took an immigration policy class in undergrad, I was hooked. What makes you different than other immigration law firms? We really try to give our clients excellent customer service. We try to be honest attorneys and give them the best representation.

The days leading up to your wedding are full of excitement and promise, and there are so many things to plan—from the flowers to the cake, ending with that tropical honeymoon destination. But in the midst of all the romantic details, many couples overlook an important part of wedding planning: the prenuptial agreement. While prenuptial agreements often have a negative connotation that is decidedly unromantic, their practical value cannot be overstated. Having a prenuptial, or antenuptial, agreement in place can give you peace of mind and assurance that what you bring to the marriage will be protected in the event of divorce. A prenuptial agreement is only worth having if it is enforceable. To provide real protection for the future spouses, each should hire independent counsel. The enforceability of an agreement may hinge on both sides having an attorney, and prevent future claims of duress or lack of disclosure. A competent family law attorney will assist in negotiating the agreement, and will ensure that none of the details as to your respective assets are overlooked. The conversation that begins the drafting process of your prenuptial agreement should always begin with a full and fair disclosure of each future spouse’s assets and liabilities, as well as any future expected income. This will help manage expectations and give each party a realistic understanding of what each brings to the marriage. The more complete the disclosure, the more likely the agreement will stand up to scrutiny in the future. Timing is important when preparing a prenuptial agreement—the time for signing is not after toasts at the rehearsal dinner. Each future spouse should have adequate opportunity to review the agreement and consult with their counsel as to their rights and responsibilities. It will also allow time to make revisions, if any are warranted. Plan on having your agreement drafted and signed at least a month before your wedding ceremony, to allow each future spouse a fair opportunity to review it.

FA: The majority of our clients have been seriously injured and many times are unable to work and earn a living. Additionally, many of them have significant past and future medical expenses. We provide them with financial security as a result of pursuing the person and/or corporation responsible for causing the injuries.
BUZZ: What is your greatest accomplishment as an attorney?
FA: I represented an individual who was wearing his seatbelt and a passenger in a vehicle that was involved in a collision wherein the vehicle rolled over and the seatbelt came open. He was ejected and became paraplegic. I sued the automobile manufacturer and obtained a $9.1 million verdict for my client. It was the first such verdict of its kind in the country for an “inertial unlatching” of a seatbelt.

With the hurricane last year, what advice do you have for folks involved in real estate actions? I would advise to re-inspect any properties for potential damage or determine if agencies, like the VA, will require a re-inspection as Duval and surrounding counties were tagged as disaster areas.

Don’t wait until there is a problem to engage a real estate professional and attorney. It is not expensive and usually very reasonable to have the contract reviewed or a professional draw up the purchasing agreement and puts all parties at ease early. Created by famed dance company Pilobolus, “Shadowland” is a first-of-itskind performance, combining legendary modern dance with high-energy, fast-paced multimedia, merging front-of-screen choreography with projected images and moving screens of different sizes and shapes. “Shadowland” tells the story of a teenage girl, longing for her independence, with nowhere for her thoughts to go but to her dreams.

Elaine Bedell was born in Jacksonville and has lived here all her life. She showed an early interest in art by scribbling on everything. Finally, those scribbles turned into recognizable objects. At nine years old, a well-known local artist Harold Hilton agreed to teach Bedell. She started with oils. “I was in heaven,” said Bedell. “I studied art all through school and then at Jacksonville University and Ringling of Art in Sarasota. I married, had a daughter, got divorced and began a career in banking.” After retiring, Bedell began to show her work at Art Walk. In 2005, she got together with a group of artists to form the The Art Center Cooperative. “I love everything about painting, of taking a plain canvas or paper and turning it into something beautiful,” said Bedell. “I paint what feeds my soul.”
Nena Tahil is opening her one-woman show, “Power of Perspective,” March 5 at the Vandroff Art Gallery, The Jewish Community Alliance. The event is free and the exhibit will showcase original silk paintings and the transformation of art into new dimensions through March 28. “I have become passionate about embracing new perspectives and experiences,” said Tahil. “The ancient symbolism of mandalas has inspired me to look within myself and re-interpret my art. By transforming some of my paintings into mandalas, I will show viewers that each of us can tap the unlimited potential within us when we are open to new perspectives. Art is not just what we see, it is how we see it. Art is about opening up to new possibilities. As we accept alternative potentials and perspectives, we experience metamorphosis.” Tahil is currently a graduate student at UNF’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. A portion of the proceeds from sales will support mental health awareness in the Jacksonville community.

THE REEL HOLLYWOOD “The Reel Hollywood” exhibit at the Museum of Science & History has been so successful, it has been extended an additional three months to May 21. The exhibit showcases Jacksonville’s rich film history that spans over 100 years. The display takes patrons through the evolving film history of Jacksonville, as well as the rest of the world. The exhibit features screenplays, novelty film items, and more. Among the most notable accomplishments of Jacksonville’s 20-year run as a major film production center are the productions of the first Technicolor film and the first feature-length color produced in the U.S. in 1917.
BEACHES FINE ARTS CONCERT SERIES Since 1972, Beaches Fine Arts Series has offered people of North Florida the chance to enjoy world-class music and dance in eight or nine free performances annually, all for free. In addition to concerts, Beaches Fine Arts Series offers educational outreach workshops for students, art exhibits and receptions. BEACHES FINE ARTS SPRINT & OLYMPIC TRIATHLONS In 1986, Beaches Fine Arts Series established the Beaches Fine Arts Sprint Triathlon Series (BFAST) in an effort to raise funds for the free concerts and educational outreach programs offered to residents and students of North Florida. BFAS celebrated the 30th Season of the triathlons in 2016. BFAST Triathlon is a Swim, Bike and Run event which encompasses one Sprint Distance Triathlon and one Olympic Distance Triathlon. Each race is sanctioned by USA Triathlon and will occur on Saturday, July 8 at Mickler’s Landing Beach Park. In its 31st season as North Florida’s original annual triathlon event, the BFAST Triathlons offer a safe, competitive and enjoyable experience for every participant. BFAST KIDS TRIATHLON Beaches Fine Arts Series is thrilled to offer this exciting race intended to introduce young athletes to the exciting world of triathlon. BFAST Kids Triathlon is a Swim, Bike and Run race sanctioned by USA Triathlon and will be held on Sunday, May 21 at Nocatee’s Junior Olympic Pool at the wonderful Aquatics Center. The triathlon is for kids ages 7-14. Every child will receive a great race t-shirt, an awesome goodie bag and a medal. Prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers for each age group and gender division. There will be ample spectator space for families to watch their kids swim in the competition pool, ride a stunning bike course through the Nocatee Preserve and master a run course with plenty of shade. Hang around after the race and enjoy music, entertainment and post-race snacks and beverages—and some surprises too! IRISH DANCE PRODIGY BRINGS NATIONAL HIT “RHYTHM IN THE NIGHT: THE IRISH DANCE SPECTACULAR” TO ORANGE PARK’S THRASHER-HORNE CENTER FOR THE ARTS ON MARCH 18 Justin Boros, founder of Two Step Productions and Producer/Creator, began writing the production in 2007 with the desire to incorporate a storyline that included exciting music, mystery and a love interest. He wanted it to be unexpected and fun for the audience. “It’s something we can all relate to,” Boros said. “It isn’t traditional. Instead, it’s exciting and entertaining.” Boros describes the production as, “an epic journey that reimagines traditional Irish dance and takes the audience on an exciting adventure of a fallen hero and his rise to redemption for an unforgettable experience.” The accomplished cast features 20 of the world’s most skilled Irish dancers. Adding to the drama and excitement of the production, “Rhythm in the Night” features an original soundtrack that delivers an orchestral atmosphere of epic proportions. 16

Slaying the Green Monster
Besides the Green Monster, GATE runners encounter the less threatening Main Street Bridge after mile 1 in the race. The best way to get good at running bridges is to run bridges (a.k.a. Florida hills). Pay especially close attention to your form. I advocate shorter steps going uphill, with powerful arm-swing action. It’s a normal inclination (pun intended) for the body to lean forward slightly from the torso while running uphill. The key really is to check yourself going downhill. If you lengthen your stride, which is going to be your natural tendency, it’s like “putting on the brakes” not to mention a lot more strain on your joints, which is actually slower. Instead, shorten your stride or quicken your cadence.
RACE A 5K I’m a fan of using smaller races to either get in a great workout or to practice things that you are going to execute on race day. One reason that I have consistent performances in distance races is that I do not deviate from my race-day plan. The more that you put yourself in race situations, the more it feels just like your usual routine when you lace up and line up to compete with the best for your personal best. I’m a firm believer in the importance of regular strength training in my routine and always recommend and prescribe programs to the athletes I coach. Sometimes this may consist primarily of body weight resistance exercises, other times I’ll incorporate medicine balls, light weights or other implements. Sometimes I just use what I see – a bench, lifeguard stand, pull-up bar, etc. You don’t have to have a gym membership to get a good strength workout in. I’m especially an advocate of single leg exercises (more applicable to running) and hamstring/core strengthening. You will notice a difference late in the race that you are not falling apart. long runs
GATE is not a 5K, so you really can’t just will yourself through it without proper training. The key is that you really need to start doing those long runs now – add on a mile each week (up to race distance or even one mile over). You’ll be able to drop it back the first week in March and do a mini-taper going into the race, feeling confident and prepared to race your best.

My number one rule that I like to remind clients of is “just because you can go faster, doesn’t mean that you should.” Interval training should be pace-specific and if it feels too easy, then the variable that you can manipulate is your recovery in between intervals. Interval training will ultimately make your run days and paces feel easier, and will allow your body to handle surges in the race (forced or planned).

Flat Belly 101 Calling all women! Do you ever feel bloated after you eat or drink? You are not alone! Depending on your current lifestyle and eating habits, you could be expanding your stomach region by 6 inches over the course of your day. Follow these tips to minimize the bloat and maximize your confidence. Salt. Salt shakers, frozen/processed meals, salt-based seasonings, and fast foods are loaded in sodium. When you take in a large amount of sodium, you will temporarily retain water, causing you to gain 2-4 pounds of water weight! Skip the salt shaker and try to keep your sodium intake to 1500-2300 mg a day. Carbonated Drinks. Both diet and regular carbonated drinks will lead to bloat for the day. The fizz from the drinks will trap air in your stomach, leading you to look puffy in the middle region. Replace your diet coke at lunch with water with lemon/lime or cucumber, which both detoxify you further. Sugar Free Foods. Many people are sensitive to sugar alcohols found in artificially flavored food and drinks. It is recommended, for health purposes, to limit artificial sugars to 2-3 servings/day. For bloat purposes, limit artificial sugars to 0 servings/day! This includes Sweet’N Low, Splenda, Truvia, NutraSweet, and Equal. Read food labels, anything ending in “–ol” may be a culprit (mannitol, sorbitol, xylitol, etc.). Gas Forming Foods. Although healthy, gas forming vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussels sprouts, onions and beans can blow up your intestines like a hot air balloon. Before hitting the beach, stick with veggies with less roughage. Air. When using a straw, chewing gum, or sucking on hard candy, we take in extra air. The new Al’s Pizza concept Al’s Craft Pizza Company, is going to have Jacksonvillians craving gourmet, Italianinspired eats everyday of the week! Al’s Pizza, a staple in Atlantic Beach for 25 years, is creating Al’s Craft Pizza Company with a focus on craft beer and craft pizza. Craft Pizza:
Rise n’ Shine Pizza – sunny side eggs, Nueske’s Bacon, and roasted potato 12-inch pizza drizzled with a Tabasco aioli only $15.
Instead of their traditional New York style pizza using gas ovens, the oven will be wood-fired. Crispy, wood-fired oven craft pizzas with epicurean toppings in a single-sized, 12-inch round is what’s new in this fledgling flagship restaurant. Ingredients like tomatoes and flour imported from Italy are used in these mini masterpieces. Executive Chef Joshua Agan shared several of the menu items in a generous tasting last month. Everything I sampled was hearty and layered in flavor. Not surprising in the least, as Agan has been sprinkling his creative culinary genius all over Jacksonville for many years now. The kale pesto on the cauliflower pizza was a perfect zing over the Gruyere cheese base. The sunny side-up eggs on the Rise n’ Shine pie pairs perfectly with the tang of the Tabasco aioli. Other entrees will be served in combination with these incredible 12-inch, gourmet noms include the Beef Bolognese gnocchi. This dish is completely craveable and definitely will be on my hit list when the doors officially open this month. The atmosphere will be casual and seat 70 people with additional outdoor seating. If modeled after most of Al’s delicious franchise, the staff will not only have great salesmanship, but friendly smiles too. In 1988, Al Mansur opened his
first Al’s Pizza at Beach and San Pablo. The chain has seven locations and has been a consistent winner of local best pizza polls. This new genre of doughy delights for Al’s will have premium pairability with a lot of the local craft beers. The concept for the restaurant is focused on local ingredients. So, you will be sure to enjoy tasty house made sauces and uber fresh ingredients. Head on over to Neptune Beach this month and share some gourmet pies with the family. This totally tasty spot for saucy 12-inch circles is going to be a big hit here in Jacksonville, any way you slice it!

When one travels the world, one is exposed to culinary concoctions that excite the palate and the mind. When a chef is the one doing the traveling, they also tend to get inspired. That’s the premise behind the Blue Pacific Grill & Taco Bar truck. The chef and chief visionary is the man known as Izzy: a man who has taken his love of travel and love of tacos to a new level of flavorful integration. Drawing from flavors found on his own journeys around the globe, Izzy has brought his delectable divinations to the First Coast’s food truck scene. Everything on the menu sounded so amazing, and the smells coming out of that trailer tantalized my senses to no end. I narrowed it down to a mix and match of their mojo chicken and their best-selling slow-cooked pulled pork with a side of lumpia for good measure. I was even nice enough to snag my boss a pair of their baja fish tacos as he has been suffering under a diet of salads for far too long. The tacos themselves are quite large; there’s no skimping on these things. All of Blue Pacific’s offerings came on tasty grilled tortillas, adding an extra level of flavor to what is already a power-packed meal. The mojo chicken, nicely marinated before it’s grilled, pairs well with the lettuce, tomato, cheese, red onions, cilantro, and pico de gallo. The slow-cooked pulled pork is other worldly when topped with their slaw, fried onions, potato straws, scallions, and a chipotle mayo that has a tanginess that will blow your mind. Their lumpia is another matter. In a town with so many options for lumpia, Blue Pacific’s comes in as one of the top I’ve ever had the privilege of trying. Make sure you try it with not only their sweet chili dipping sauce, but also what I can only describe as a yum yum sauce that brings out a whole new realm of flavor combinations. Chef Cecilia Lluberes began her culinary journey by making housemade sauces and marinades. Now she shares her cooking prowess with clients all over Jacksonville. We caught up with this amazing chef and received the dish on her early upstart. How did you receive your training to become a chef? My grandmother was my first mentor. Then at school a noncurricular class was offered, International Cuisine, and I took it. Later, in life I graduated as a Caterer from Penn Foster Career. If you could have your own cooking show, what would you name it? Ethnic Roots! What are your favorite ingredients to use? Garlic, onion, oregano. Most unusual dish you have eaten? Iguanas, and Beggar Chicken.

While runners work on their nutrition throughout their training cycles, the night before race day is of particular importance. Carb-loading is great, but there are plenty of ways to fuel in the hours leading up to the big event. Here are just a few places to grab a bite before the Gate River Run and the other races around Jacksonville.
Do you have a specialty dish that your family and friends always want you to make? Yes, many of them. However, I frequently make the “Sancocho” which is a typical soup, very hardy. What is your most memorable kitchen experience? When I was around 17, my father’s friends came to visit. They hadn’t eaten, so I prepared an Arroz con Pollo and he kept critiquing the way I was doing it (he had been owner of a hotel and chef). He would say, “you are not doing it the right way.” I just kept cooking. Everyone ate and then he left with the friends. He kept saying what a wonderful meal I had prepared just for him! I will never forget that.

When it has cooked a little, place on top whole egg. Let it cook a little. Add the ham, keep it in center.

Heat a 9” pan, add egg whites, let congeal a little. On top, place 1 mozzarella slice.

What to Know Before You Go - GATE 15K
The GATE River Run is the largest 15K race in the United States and will once again serve as the USA 15K Championship with America’s top Olympic athletes competing for $85,000 in prize money.
Please arrive early! Over 20,000 people will be trying to park on race morning. Traffic will be heavy. All runners and walker should be in position by 8 a.m. The starting line is on Gator Bowl Boulevard between the Stadium and Metropolitan Park. There is a Walker’s Starting Line for the 15K located in Parking Lot J, near GATE 1 of EverBank Field.
Last year over 24,000 runners and walkers participated in one of the featured events including the 15K, The Florida TimesUnion 5K for Charity, the Junior River Run, and the Brooks Rehabilitation Challenge Mile.
Make sure to wear your race number on the front of your clothing. This is the only way to be identified for online pictures. Water Stations and toilets will be located throughout the course, and entertainment will be provided each mile during the race. The race finishes on Duval Street in front of the Jacksonville Fairgrounds.

The three day Runner’s Expo will be held at the Jacksonville Fairgrounds. It is famous for its great bargains on all your running needs. For Charity The boxers, who work side-by-side on a daily basis, have this once a year rivalry to raise money for charity. The Guns were big winners last time with a 9 to 6 win over the Hoses. Ponte Vedra Beach resident and one of the best golfers in the world, Jim Furyk continues to add to his future Hall of Fame resume. Furyk was named the 2018 Ryder Cup captain for the U.S. He has played in nine Ryder Cups, the second most in U.S. history. The U.S. hasn’t won a Ryder Cup since 1993.
The talented cornerback from Sandalwood High School waited until National Signing Day, but finally chose to play college football at Georgia. Speed, a three-star recruit, got a lot of attention late in the recruiting cycle before deciding to play in Athens.

Local philanthropist John Hayt was presented with the Deane Beman Award by the Jacksonville Area Golf Association to honor his community service. Hayt has been a big supporter of local golf, especially for UNF golf. He’s donated more than a million dollars to the Ospreys program.
One of the top ten female players in the country will be playing basketball at the next level in Tennessee. Davis helped lead the Ribault Lady Trojans to the national championship last year and this year, she is averaging more than 25 points and 10 rebounds a game. Stevie Nick’s grandfather, Aaron Nicks, a would-be country star, handcrafted a guitar for young Stevie and taught her well-known selections from the country music cannon. By the time she was five years old, Stevie was gigging with him at local gin mills. In the late 60s, Nicks formed a musical partnership with Lindsey Buckingham, a guitarist and fellow songwriter. Together they released “Buckingham-Nicks” in 1972, which was largely unnoticed. But in 1975, they both signed with Fleetwood Mac. The newly forged band quickly recorded an eponymous collection that went straight to No. 1 and sold 3 million copies. What compliments do you hear most often from your customers? Customers love our trippy bathrooms, our unique beer cocktails and our staff’s understanding of the products we serve. Additionally, people appreciate our staffs’ rad taste in the music that we blast in the shop! What is your funniest customer story? One of my all-time favorite BREW customer moments was just a couple of weeks ago when one of the crew members threw on “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The entire bar started singing along to the classic song! It was so unreal and hilarious! Everybody was singing at the top of their lungs and by the end of it we were all laughing. It was such a moment to share with everyone.
