Making a Difference: non-profit & charity leaders in our community

It is an incredible honor to lead a local affiliate in a global organization such as Susan G. Komen,” said Wise. “I am passionate about using my heart, knowledge and skills to help address the fear, the fight and the cure of breast cancer.”

DELORES WISE

Delores Wise has a very personal passion for our mission, having lost her mother to breast cancer at the age of 19. She lives each day for the cure and is leading North Florida Susan G. When you ask adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities what they want, they typically answer, ‘a good home, a good job and good friends.’ The Arc Jacksonville invites fellow citizens to partner with us in creating a community where disability is a distinction without a difference and where all individuals will have choices on where they live, how they work, and when they play.”

JIM WHITTAKER

Executive Director of The Arc Jacksonville | ARCJacksonville.org

Jim Whittaker has been the Executive Director of The Arc Jacksonville since 1999. Influenced by his mother’s career working with individuals with I/DD, Whittaker pursued a career dedicated to opening possibilities for those whom society had labeled “different.” Whittaker earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida in special education and pursued post-graduate work in administration at Florida Atlantic University. COMMUNITY FOCUS

The Most Interesting Person I’ve Interviewed This Month He’s a violinist in the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and Composer-In-Residence at the Florida Chamber Music Project for the 2013-14 season. AND, Piotr Szewczyk (Chef-Chick) is also the winner of the “First Coast Connect” theme song contest! Szewczyk beat out dozens of submissions from local artists

across the listening area with his entry. His original, First Coast Connect with Melissa Ross instrumental composition will now serve as our show’s daily theme.

“I’m very excited and honored to have my music chosen,” said Szewczyk. “I’m also thrilled to share my music with all the listeners on the First Coast and make a musical contribution to Melissa Ross’s outstanding show.” Szewczyk used his considerable skills to compose, perform and record the upbeat instrumental piece that features keyboards, synthesizers, and computerized guitars.

Henderson Haven, Inc. HendersonHaven.org Henderson Haven, Inc. was founded in 2003 with the mission of insuring that everyone is given the same opportunity to live a self-determined life of choice and inclusion regardless of their perceived abilities. Henderson Haven offers advocacy and community supports, an after school program with two new

locations opening in Jacksonville this year, an adult day program, and a private school in partnership with the Broach Schools that will open this August. By focusing on true individualized service models and not using a “cookie cutter” approach, Henderson Haven has proven their concepts can work with real results. Henderson Haven was described by a visiting State Employee touring its after school and day facility as, “The most forward thinking agency I have ever seen.”

Szewczyk’s music has been featured on American Public Media’s “Performance Today” and the CBS Early Show. He is also the winner of 2014 Doctoral Concerto Competition at Florida State University, and the winner of the 2013 FSU Carnegie Hall recital proposal competition.

“I constantly push myself artistically and explore different styles, and this theme song reflects that in moving far beyond what I usually do as a classical violinist and composer,” he said. Additionally, he is the creator and performer of the Violin Futura Project, a series of recitals of new solo violin pieces written and dedicated to him by renowned composers from around the world which he has been performing since 2006 at numerous universities, festivals and most recently, at Carnegie Hall. Szewczyk’s music will replace the show’s original theme, which had been used daily since the show took to the air in August of 2009. His winning entry captured the essence of First Coast Connect perfectly- energetic, edgy, and local! To learn more about Piotr Szewczyk, visit his website at VeryNewMusic.com.

LEADERSHIP JAX

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

An interview with a leader in the Jacksonville Community

The Cathedral Arts Project mission is to enrich the quality of life in Northeast Florida through unleashing the creative spirit of young people. By providing access to instruction in the visual and performing arts, we empower underserved, school-aged children to succeed in all areas of their lives.

Why am I so passionate? I want to be an advocate for those without a voice. I strongly believe that everyone should be treated with respect and equality. 51 million adults live with a form of Arthritis, 1.3 million adults are clinically diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis in the United States. 1 in 3 people in Florida have a form of arthritis. These are staggering numbers! I volunteer because I want to offer people hope! A diagnosis isn’t the end of your life....yes, your life is changed forever...but I want to show people you can have arthritis and you can still accomplish all of your dreams! This past month I was the Project Lead for our AF Team and I had the most wonderful opportunity to work with 11 of our Winn Dixie stores who partnered with us by selling our bone mobiles at their registers to raise money for a cure.

The Cathedral Arts Project was launched in 1993 by a small group of individuals from St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral who had a heart for both children and the arts. They wanted to provide the children in the immediate neighborhood an opportunity for a meaningful education in the arts. They began with one dance class that was attended by 10 students from a transitional housing facility. The Cathedral Arts Project now serves more than 2,000 students two afternoons each week during the school year and summer, providing quality, standards-based instruction in dance, music, theatre and the visual arts at no charge to our students.

JACQUELINE LOVE

BUZZ: The Legacy of Leaders dinner and the Portrait of A Proactive Leader - Turning a Diagnosis Leadership Gallery all started at Ocean 60. How did it feel into a Mission of Hope to be one of the leaders recognized? What does being a “leader” mean to you?

BUZZ: Why is the Arthritis Foundation your Charity of JT LOVE: I was extremely honored and overjoyed to

Choice? Why are you so passionate about volunteering be recognized by the Arthritis Foundation. It’s funny, I with them? was present at Ocean 60 when the first leaders dinner JT LOVE: I always say that the Arthritis Foundation is took place, and I never thought I would be a part of the a family that I wasn’t looking to join, but WOW am I glad next group of leaders. It was really great to have a dinner that I have my arthritis family today! I was diagnosed course named after me. “Jacqueline Love Safari Salad” with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis when I was 15 years I believe a leader should stay true to their passion, old. Let me tell you being diagnosed at the age of 15 in give their best and always stay humble. the mid 1970’s with Rheumatoid Arthritis, is not an easy diagnosis.....Arthritis in children? Arthritis is supposed to be a disease that old people get isn’t it? Certainly not a BUZZ: What advice would you leave future leaders? young girl at the age of 15? Yes, Kids get arthritis too.... Unfortunately arthritis does not discriminate towards JT LOVE: My advice to future leaders would be any of us and it carries with it a stigma that is so hurtful to stay open minded because everyone is from a different walk of life. to people who are already in constant pain....

HOLLY ESPOSITO MARLOW

FENA MARIE FOLEY

I have no great story about schooling, training or people mentoring me in the world of art. This is all very new to me. I simply love to create art. I started painting for myself, trying out different things on wood, and just came up with my sea dragons.”

Holly Esposito Marlow is a native Floridian, who moved to Atlantic Beach in 2012 and decided to explore her artistic nature. Influenced and inspired by the sea, her signature paintings are an edgy interpretation of seahorses and seadragons. Bold colors and soft textures are used to express her style.

Painting for my own joy is itself an entity that helps me through this not so perfect life, one must use the negativity and turn that energy into creation”

Living a life filled with color is a very fulfilling life. I am a Jacksonville native that lives at the beach and strives to perfect my art and bring joy to those who I create for. My works vary in media but I prefer using acrylic on wood paneling. I enjoy doing ocean themed artwork the most but love painting animals and portraits as well. Fantasy art is more of my personal love but no less a passion. Living in Jacksonville offers so much inspiration for me and I am proud to say I have many friends who also are my clients.

A Man on Fire

What do you see when you look at a picture? Maybe you recognize the face of a movie star or see an iconic image. But to artist Adrian Pickett, photos say something unique and personal. Not every picture speaks his language, but when they do, it is a binding conversation, and forever the two shall be entwined. What exactly do these special pictures say to Mr. Pickett? They say, “I challenge you. Just try to capture the peaks and valleys that make the wrinkles on my face. I want to see you master my mountain of a nose; translate the delicate texture of my hair to perfection. I challenge you to draw what you see, and when you finish, it will be as if your drawing and I, the original image, are mirrored souls.” Mr. Pickett graciously accepts this challenge. At times, this endeavor called for great patience. You see, Mr. Adrian Pickett is a self-taught artist. Although, he works in a multitude of mediums, charcoal is a favorite. Working and refining his craft day after day, he stayed at it, until the charcoal beneath his fingers had no choice, but to succumb to his power of subtlety and creation. And on that day, Mr. Pickett was ready to respond to the images that had called his name for years. He started with Willie Nelson, and Mr. Picket saw that Willie was right and good, just as he had imagined. He had stayed true to lines, the texture….the essence of the picture. And, then, there was no stopping Mr. Pickett. One by one, each challenge was met, Malcolm X, Jimmy Hendricks, Notorious, and countless others. His work is realistic and stunning, as seen reflected in the awed faces of those who enter his gallery, The Adrian Pickett Gallery. If the story stopped here, it would be a good one. Young, self-taught, artist finds success following his passion. He owns his own gallery, teaches classes, and generously gives of himself to the community. But, buckle up; I predict, Mr. Pickett is just getting warmed up. His receptive attitude, coupled with curiosity and an internal drive to capture sights to the canvas, means he is going to exponentially explode. While you still can, visit his gallery, take a class, or maybe have a personal work commissioned! This man is on fire!!!!

Players By The Sea Inspiration and excitement! The rock musical “Rent” debuts at Players by the Sea Players by the Sea and The Lazzara Family Foundation proudly present the first local production of the long-running Broadway hit musical “Rent.” This exciting theatrical event runs four weeks, including Wednesdays, on the Main Stage. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, “Rent” has become a pop culture phenomenon since its 1996 Broadway debut, with a passionately life-affirming message that resonates with audiences young and old. Tragically, the show’s 36-year old composer Jonathan Larson died suddenly on the eve of its opening and did not live to see its ground-breaking success. “Rent” is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today. Loosely based on Puccini’s opera “La Bohême,” the show follows a year in the life of a group of struggling artists in New York’s East Village. How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves, and conflicts in the shadow of poverty, drugs and AIDS is exuberant, passionate, and heart-felt musical theatre. “Rent” is directed and choreographed by Alejandro Rodriguez, with music direction by Jay Ivey. Graffiti painting by Chip Southworth aka Keith Haring’s Ghost is a highlight of the innovative set design. The show’s diverse, high-energy cast features Elias Hionides, Ross Frontz, Joseph Lorenzo Sykes-Burns, Milton Threadcraft III, Kerri Alexander, Jordan Leggett, Rachel Romo and Krystal Camille White. The ensemble includes Tarra F. Conner, Netta Walker, Sadie LaManna, Christy Mull, Olivia Chernyshev, Ilana Gould, Alix Bond, Jessica Alexander, Jimmy Alexander, Ron Shreve, Ryan Arroyo and Harrison Breault. Performances are July 18, 19, 23, 24, 25, 26, 30, 31, August 1, 2, 7, 8, 9 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $28. Wednesdays and Thursdays are Student Nights, offering half price admission with valid student ID. For information and tickets, call (904)249-0289 or log onto PlayersByTheSea.org. “Rent” contains mature subject matter.

“The Good Body”

at Amelia Community Theatre Following its sold-out run in May, Amelia Community Theatre (ACT) is bringing back “The Good Body” for two encore performances on July 18-19. Written by the author of “The Vagina Monologues,” Eve Ensler’s play is a collection of monologues examining women of all cultures and backgrounds and how they feel compelled to change the way they look in order to fit in. The ACT production is under the direction of Toni D’Amico. “There is a lot of laughter, but also moments when you go ‘oh,’” D’Amico said. “The play speaks to women, but everyone can relate to it.” “The Good Body” features a series of vignettes and places a significant focus on weight loss and body image. “In the society we live in today, our appearance is so important,” D’Amico said.

18

July 2014 • www.iwantaBUZZ.com

The play, which has been called Ensler’s autobiography, revolves around a central character named Eve (played by Laura Swaim at ACT.) Seven additional actors portray other distinctive characters. “They range from a girl at a fat camp to Helen Gurley Brown,” D’Amico said. During “The Good Body” run, ACT is supporting Micah’s Place by holding a collection drive and prize raffles. Micah’s Place is a certified domestic violence center and the only one serving Nassau County. “The Good Body” contains mature subject matter and strong, colorful adult language. Performances begin at 8 p.m. on July 1819 in ACT’s intimate Studio 209 Theatre. Tickets are $15. Call (904) 261-6749 or visit AmeliaCommunityTheatre.org

An impromptu photo shoot by the massive driftwood at Big Talbot is a must while visiting Jacksonville.

BUZZ: What regularly reoccurring events does everyone need to attend before the end of summer? KM: A Friday Night Suns Game! You can’t beat baseball and an awesome fireworks show! If you want to cool off, then go to

the Florida Theatre for their Summer Movie Classics every Sunday. Art Walk downtown on the first Wednesday of the month is great, as well. And of course, Riverside Arts Market (RAM) on Saturdays. On Saturday, I’d probably start the morning at one of our fun breakfast spots, there are a ton to choose from. Then I’d head to a local antique store or to Five Points/Avondale for some boutique shopping. Next I would head to Riverside Arts Market where I would grab lunch and some amazing handmade art or baked goods. I’d also sit in the amphitheater area by the river and listen to the music while enjoying the summer breeze. Next, I would wander over to the Cummer Museum of Arts & Gardens and explore the museum - enjoy free entry on the first Saturday of the month. Then, I would find out which sports team was in town and head to the game – The Suns, Sharks and Axemen are all exciting games to watch and provide a fun, family-friendly experience (even if you don’t know all the rules!). I would then enjoy live music at one of our great Downtown venues like Underbelly or 1904 Music Hall and end the night with a delicious craft cocktail at Dos Gatos or Volstead or visit one of our local breweries, we have so many great ones in Jacksonville! The next day I would try something new. I would wake up and pack a cooler for lunch then head out to the Timucuan Preserve and rent a kayak or stand up paddleboard, and head out to explore nature. If you would prefer to stay on land, explore the miles and miles of trails or even take a segway tour that leaves from the Ribault Club. Next I’d ride the St. Johns River Ferry and head over to Hanna Park to the beach to swim and play in the ocean, take your surfboard and catch a wave at “The Poles”. After the beach, clean up and head to the St. Johns Town Center for dinner and a little shopping.

Food and Frolic at St. Francis Inn: Superior Staycationing in St. Augustine

By Monica Stouder, Images by Monica Lea Imagery – MonicaLea.com WHAT BETTER WAY TO DE-STRESS A JACKSONVILLIAN THAN TO FIND A SWEET SPOT TO STAYCATION. Rich in history, St Augustine has over 25 bed and breakfast spots primed and ready for weary vacationers to bunk down. Renowned for its hospitality, phenomenal food and amazing amenities, I chose the beautiful St. Francis Inn as my home base for the onset of my 2 day staycation escapade. This spectacular spot built in 1791 on the intersect of St Francis Street and St. George has a well lit parking area – a true bonus for those who are aware of the modest parking availability in St. Auggie. And there my car would sit for 2 days undisturbed as every amazing adventure of food and frolic were only steps away from my historic home away from Jacksonville home.

Day 1: Frolic

creative and farm fresh making the act of mouthwatering an easy task. I started with a creamy Smoked Fish Dip with marinated cucumber and caper berries, then enjoyed a decadent entrée of Brioche and Mushroom Bread Pudding and topped off my visit with a Blueberry Lime Cheesecake. Completely impressed with the food, note that the staff is friendly and the drinks are masterfully prepared with awesome icy accents!

What: Checked into the St. Francis Inn Where: 279 St. George St., St. Augustine When: Open all year round The staff here immediately makes you feel like family and within moments of checking in I was whisked off to the adjacent building across the cobblestone street to the Wilson House and up the stairs to the Wilson Suite. This space had a separate kitchenette, a sitting area (complete with fresh flowers), large porch access with bench swing and rocking chairs (of which I enjoyed each), separate and spacious bedroom with king-sized bed and a bathroom with whirlpool tub for two. Oh how the attention to detail impressed me here! There was even a glass decanter of Sherry and accompanying cordial glassware. And there is NO mini bar charges here! If you choose to drink this libation the next day the Sherry gets promptly refilled – Free of charge! My suite also had free Wi-Fi and 2 TV’s - one of which had a DVD player. (The movie library in the St. Francis is complementary as well). But the amenities don’t just stop at the amazing rooms. The main house has a swimming pool, beautiful courtyard with wrought iron tables and chairs (where you will find local resident cat Zeke lounging lazily in the sun daily), historical fish pond, 2 hour Segway tours offered to the Inn’s guests at a discounted price, private room massage, complimentary bicycle use, day passes to the Refinery Athletic Club, ticket for free admission to the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum and free beach access 6 miles away complete with provided beach chairs, towels, cold drinking water and full bathroom with shower! There are books and board games in the charming parlor and even a designated area and time for guests to enjoy making S’mores! Additionally teas, fruit-infused water and freshly brewed coffee are out all day for guests to wet their whistle. Food What: St. Francis Social Hour Where: Wherever in the Inn you wish to be social! When: Daily 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. During this time one can have free wine (some local San Sebastian offerings available) and beer at no additional cost while engaging other guests in recaps of their St. Augustine adventures. Additionally, the kitchen, headed up by creative culinarian and master cook Janice Leary, serves up special hors d’oeuvres such as house-made crab dips and chips, or antipasto with homemade crostinis. Frolic What: St. Augustine Distillery Co. Tour Where 112 Riberia St., St. Augustine When: Mon.-Sat. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sun. 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. A walkabout from the St. Francis Inn took me to The St. Augustine Distillery Co.. This is a wonderful (and FREE) tour of the historically renovated ice manufacturing plant built in 1919 in St. Augustine. With lots of antique equipment and found artifacts from the old plant, this was a very interesting guided tour. It was then off to the distillery where I watched spirits being made from scratch. The adventure ended with samples of some of the distillery’s luscious local libations. A fun and free frolic! Food What: Dinner at the Ice Plant Where: 110 Riberia St., St. Augustine When: Mon.-Fri. 11:30 a.m.-2 a.m., Sat.-Sun. 5 p.m.-2 a.m. It was then up the stairs to the Ice Plant bar for some incredible eats and sumptuous sips. The menu here is

Day 2

Food What: Breakfast Buffet Where: St. Francis Inn Dining Room When: Mon.-Fri. 7:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m., Sat.-Sun. 7:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. The St. Francis Inn does an amazing breakfast buffet! They also serve FREE flavored Latte’s, Cappuccino or Espresso from 7:30 a.m. until noon. Another awesome perk! Menus vary throughout the week with items such as vegetable strata, lemon poppy waffles, asparagus mushroom scramble, the most delicious down home sausage gravy and biscuits, homemade granola and one absolutely incredible strawberry soup! Frolic What: Eco Tour boat adventure Where: 111 Avenida Menendez, St. Augustine When: Mon.-Sun. 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Needing to digress a bit from the bounty of St. Fancis’s breakfast, I walked over to the marina to indulge in a relaxing boat excursion from Eco Tour. After a safety brief we hoped into our small skiff (seating around 6) and our captain skimmed us over the Mantanzas Inlet for the next hour and a half where we saw manatees mating, dolphins diving, seagulls sailing, sea turtles surfing and jelly fish…well doing whatever jelly fish do best. This watery jaunt was a fun and informative adventure full of wildlife and historical information about St. Augustine. I definitely will be back to try out this sunny excursion in one of Eco Tour’s kayaks! Food What: Nightly Dessert Where: St. Francis Inn Parlor When: Daily 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Capping off a wonderful staycation I ended my lovely visit to the St. Francis Inn with a luscious Lady Finger Cake whipped meticulously up by master cook Janice Leary and a lovely meet and greet with gracious Inn owners Joe and Margaret Finnegan. There is nothing like great conversation and sugary sweets to end an evening and ultimately a phenomenal trip. I truly appreciated the warmth that these Innkeepers exuded and admired the careful cultivation of an ageold business model designed to simply make people ironically feel ‘at home’. Staycationers definitely should give this historic B&B a try. And don’t worry about driving anywhere – put on those comfy walking shoes or simply kick back, because good food and frolicking isn’t far from the St. Francis! Putting the Brakes on the Summer Slide, Part II By Robin R. Warren, WJCT Education Outreach Coordinator

Create a family newsletter. Enlist your kids to choose a template from your computer’s office suite. Older kids will be able to quickly learn their way around the program. Younger kids can help take photos and write stories about family adventures, vacations and fun times at home. They can dictate their summer memories to a parent or older sibling. Include a favorite summer recipe. Send your newsletter to family members and friends.

Like sneaking some shredded zucchini into pancakes, sneaking lessons into everyday activities makes learning more palatable, especially for children! Until next month!

Record your own audiobooks. Let your child read her favorite book while you record it. Save the recording on your computer, and let her listen to her story when she craves down time. If you have several kids, assign each a character.

The school year has officially ended! Everyone is excited vacations and trying to find fun ways to fill in the time during long summer days. Once again, WJCT has got you covered with ways to not only entertain your youngsters, but to also make sure that you are helping them to put the brakes on the Summer Slide while out of school. Check out some ideas that WJCT has for sneaking learning into the summer months. Cook with your child. Some popular cookbooks are making the rounds among parents. They teach you how to tuck veggies into kid-friendly treats like muffins and cookies. Such sneaky techniques will give your children the nutrition they need without a battle at the dinner table, the cookbooks promise.

Experiment with different art media. Play with different types of paint, from watercolor to oil-based (wear a smock!). Check out pastels, colored pencils, charcoal and other art supplies. Help your kids discover their favorite ways to express their creativity. Encourage them to make mixed-media masterpieces. Do laundry together. Crazy but true, laundry is educational! Preschoolers can help you sort laundry by color, find matching socks and count towels and washcloths. Make a reading scrapbook. After reading a fantastic book, encourage your child to draw pictures about the story. Your child can also make up an alternate ending, write a sequel and create a timeline. Keep the book notes in a folder and turn them into a reading scrapbook at the end of the summer.

All this month we’re celebrating the “Wild Kratts” with TWO specials coming up this month on July 7th and July 21st! Watch @ 7 a.m. & 7:30 a.m. Monday -Friday on WJCT-TV 7.1 (Comcast 8 & 440)

While FCNMHP doesn’t house animals, it funds and implements the large-scale Mega Adoption events and invites shelters from across the region to find homes for the animals in their care. Many participating agencies leave the events and return to an empty shelter – a rare and wonderful sight. The Mega Adoption Events are the largest in the country and find homes for 800-1,000 animals in one weekend. Pairing homeless pets with new families during the Mega Adoption Events is a key component of the life-saving work that is making Jacksonville no kill. The no-kill standard is defined by a 90% live release rate, meaning that 90% of all animals entering the shelters make it out alive. When FCNMHP was founded in 2002, this goal was just an ambitious dream. More than 23,000 animals were dying in local shelters and options for affordable spay/neuter and veterinary care were minimal. Today, 91.6% of all animals that entered the city shelter made it out alive for the first quarter of 2014. The number of animals entering the shelter has been cut by more than half, and euthanasia rates have decreased by an astounding 90%. These significant changes are the result of years of hard work and one of the strongest collaborations ever seen in animal welfare. Laila was in such dire shape that her blood levels should not have sustained life. Her muscles were so weak that she could not walk or stand.

When you enter the Jacksonville Fairgrounds during one of First Coast No More Homeless Pets’ (FCNMHP) Mega Adoption Events, there is an undeniable buzz in the air. Attendees line the building, volunteers rush to and fro, and hundreds of dogs and cats await their new families. Whether you are searching for a new best friend or just checking out the scene, the Mega Adoption Events are certainly a sight to see. Since July 2012, FCNMHP has hosted the Mega Adoption Events as part of a multi-faceted formula for ending the needless euthanasia of shelter pets in Jacksonville and surrounding areas. With the largest spay/neuter clinic in the country, a team of veterinarians working six days a week to fix about 120 pets a day, and an array of free and low-cost surgery options, FCNMHP is known as the spay/ neuter expert. But, FCNMHP’s reach extends much further with programs like the Pet Food Bank, which distributes free pet food to low-income families, and Teaching Animals and Inmates Life Skills (TAILS), which partners behaviorally-challenged shelter dogs with prison inmates for socialization and training.

By Courtney Nichols

Laila’s care was provided by FCNMHP through the Angel Fund. She found her forever home with 10 acres at one of the recent Mega Adoption Events and is doing great with her new family.

FCNMHP’s next Mega Adoption Event is July 18-20 at the Jacksonville Fairgrounds. Pets like Laila Ali, who was described as one of the worst cases of neglect animal control officers had ever seen, are given a second chance at life through these events. How Good Food Should Taste

The Grotto Wine & Tapas Bar Article by Monica Stouder & Photos by Monica Lea Imagery

Although small, cave grottos can house buxom blondes personally procured by Hugh Hefner, San Marco holds a much more spirited spot (with considerably less silicone), filled with libations and fine food. This San Marco staple, now in business for 13 years, has a new summer menu and is waiting for its hungry patrons to sample this eclectic fare – cotton tailed attire optional. Seating an estimated 70 customers, The Grotto Wine & Tapas Bar entices new clientele with its rocky frontage and foliage façade. The outdoor seating allows folks to enjoy their specifically palated sips and awesome eats while watching passersby’s slowly poke over the sidewalks of Jacksonville’s most coveted neighborhood. Yes, the vibe here is casual yet comfortable elegance and is more likely known for its amazing wine selections than its amazing menu. But let me assure you, even the most persnickety foodie will love the morethan-just tapas menu here. Simply stated: The FOOD here is incredible as well. I found it difficult to chose which items I wanted to try, but prompted by my smiling server Holly I began my eating experience with the Medjool Dates. This large appetizer held a generous portion of plump dates stuffed with an herbed goat cheese. A large spiced pecan topped each packed parcel and a drizzle of milk thistle honey was the perfect additive for this sweet and savory sensation. What a fantastic start to what was to be a magnificent meal! The Cantaloupe and Watermelon Salad was another palate pleaser. Thin strips of Prosciutto over a seasoned arugula was definitely a taste bud tantilizer. The fresh melons and chunks of Chevre cheese were accented with the acidic tang of a beautifully reduced balsamic swish. My entrée was the BBQ Braised Short Ribs, tender and delectable this

This cheesy wheel was slathered with a brown sugar layer topped with thinly sliced almonds and baked in a perfectly puffed pastry. Served with a portion of sliced green apples and some large raisins, this sweet bite was a splendid end to one incredible dinner. Kudos to the culinary creativity of Executive Chef Scott! This menu will most certainly be further explored by this foodie.

Dave Matthews BanD july 15 veterans MeMorial arena

By Tiffany McDonald, CFM Digital Marketing Director

Is 2 Sets Too Much? For most, the Dave Matthews’ Band (DMB) evokes memories of a specific time in their lives, spanning an actual period rather than any particular moment in time. This is likely because DMB has been touring and creating memories almost every summer for over 20 years. With twenty-five singles under their belt, DMB represents a genre not easily quantifiable but readily relatable based on the diversity of their sound. Upon further inspection; I realized the dominant element of the song and album that I most relate to is…rock? jazz? folk? Their music draws on a plethora of resources for inspiration. This ability to break down barriers and exist as only a student of his craft has allowed Mr. Matthews to create “A Very Special Evening with Dave Matthews Band.” This is a special show with two sets: one acoustic and one electric, a special thank you to fans for the band’s irrefutable success in North America.

One undeniable fact is that David Matthew’s artistic range (and… well, ridiculous success in artwork, music, acting, and my personal favorite, wine) makes this an evening you will not want to miss. Join the “Too Much” songwriter, “Under the Table Dreaming” album-producer and “Stand Up” album cover artist as he takes you through

the acoustic and electric versions of the music that shaped the sound of the last twenty years, as you’ve blossomed into adulthood.

Turn it UP Bands to be on the lookout for

MICHAEL FR ANTI & SPEARHEAD STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: Franti and his band Spearhead are known for the communal spirit they create with their extraordinary live shows. The singer regularly brings down the barrier between the performers on stage and the people in the audience; whether venturing into the crowd to slap hands or pulling fans up to dance, sing and play along with the band. He’s a dynamic performer who effortlessly moves tens of thousands of people with his invocations. Watching him, you can’t help but think about how much he delights in every moment.

AN INTERVIEW WITH MICHAEL FRANTI: Humanitarian, musician and a person just like you.

From his beginnings in the post-punk band the Beatings and critically acclaimed hip-hop group Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy (who toured with U2 and Public Enemy) Franti has remained a devoted defender of the underdog. For a decade, Franti hosted the Power to the Peaceful free concerts in San Francisco, at first to support incarcerated political activist Mumia Abu Jamal, then as a platform to speak out against escalating violence around the globe. He’s made several trips to hot spots in the Middle East to see war’s human toll with his own eyes. In 2005, he made the film “I Know I’m Not Alone” about his travels through Iraq, Palestine and Israel. “I made a commitment to myself years ago that I wouldn’t just read about what was happening in the world,” he says. “I needed to go and experience it.” It was on these trips that he realized people don’t necessarily want to hear songs that bluntly address the ills of the world but rather songs that will offer them some escape from their difficulties. “I wouldn’t want to live in a society where anger is a force that gets things done,” Franti says. “Some people react by throwing a trash can through a window. I’d rather go play music in a school, prison or war zone. Those are the ways I choose to affect change.” The same week his 2009 smash “Say Hey (I Love You)” broke, eventually selling over 2-million downloads, Franti’s appendix ruptured and put him in the hospital close to death. It was another moment that changed his perspective on songwriting, leading to the triumphant tone of All People.

“I want to make music that is timeless,” Franti says. “At this point in my life when I turn on the radio and hear my song it means a lot to me. When I was a kid I would go on these long drives with my family I and still remember the songs we would listen to in the car. It means I’m part of somebody’s life passages. As an artist, I cherish those moments.”

“All the freaky people make the beauty of the world!” -Michael Franti. BUZZ: For those who are unfamiliar with your music, can you tell me about your show in St. Augustine? MF: Our show is about connecting to the audience and celebrating life through different types of music, mixed together. There will be a lot of dancing, jumping around and people connecting to each other! BUZZ: Is there anything you would like to share with Jacksonville? MF: Yes, my girlfriend and I started this charity called, Do It For The Love. It’s like Make a Wish but just with music. We send people with advanced life-threatening life conditions to concerts, no matter the band or city. If there is anyone out there who could benefit from this, contact us! DoItForTheLove.org BUZZ: What inspired you to write, “ALL People”? MF: Celebration of diversity and the importance of sharing with everyone how we are all significant. That every voice does count, no matter a person’s color, the country they’re from or amount of money they have. We are all equal.

COREY SMITH STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:

In today’s country music climate, there is an abundance of artists and songwriters champing at the bit to tell you just how “country” they are. But none represents the genuine rural lifestyle quite like Corey Smith. Born and raised in the bucolic town of Jefferson, Ga., just a few miles northwest of the musical hotbed of Athens, Corey has carved out a successful career by writing and singing not about the idealized country imagery of trucks and bonfires, but by depicting truthfully the experience of growing up far from big-city sidewalks. “Country music is all those things that art is supposed to be. It’s populist, it’s infectious and, most importantly, it’s about people,” says Corey. “So country music should be about artists holding a mirror back to themselves to reflect what they’re experiencing in their own little towns.” Clearly, country fans feel the same way. Corey has amassed an unfailingly devout fan base, not only in his native Southeast region, but all around the nation, simply by telling it the way it is. He has released seven studio albums—including 2011’s Top 20 release The Broken Record—all written and produced by Corey himself. And his concerts, documented on last year’s live release, Live in Chattanooga, regularly sell out, with audiences singing along to

such fan favorites as the coming-of-age anthem “Twenty-One,” the nostalgic time warp “If I Could Do It Again” and the group hug “I Love Everyone.” An artist who maintains a unique voice while still honoring the tenets of his cherished genre, one that his grandmother helped introduce him to. “There’s more than one way to skin a cat in country music,” Corey says with a smile. “What makes me different is that I write all these songs, and I write from the heart and live all these songs. But I want to be a part of the country music establishment. Whenever I visit the Country Music Hall of Fame when I’m in Nashville, I leave there feeling really inspired. This is what I’m a part of, and I want to make my mark.”

CP: What made you decide to come to Jacksonville? JLV: Jacksonville is a very, very pretty city. I think that it’s a city, soccer-wise, that will grow very much. It was really astonishing the number of people who were at the US vs. Nigeria game. That says a lot about this region, soccerwise. You can definitely tell that there is a passion for soccer in Jacksonville. I really like that a lot. I reminds me a lot of Argentina. CP: How important was your relationship with Dario Sala in the decision? JLV: I think my relationship with Dario was probably the most important part. Dario and I have been talking for quite some time about coming here and becoming the coach of the team. He really trusts my personal and professional experience and that honestly pushes me forward to work harder for the team. CP: What kind of players are you going to be looking for? JLV: You are going to see that very soon. I really like a dynamic style of play with a lot of player rotation and a lot of pressure on the field. I like short plays, so there is no space for the rivals to get anything. I really do like very athletic players. CP: Where will you find the players? JLV: We are going to start tryouts here in the summer. We will finish the tryouts i July 2014 • www.iwantaBUZZ.com

EARLY PREVIEW: COLLEGE FOOTBALL 2014 One of the great spring/summer rituals for college football fans is the arrival of the preseason magazines on the newsstands. As usual, Lindy’s is the first magazine available quickly followed by Athlon and Sporting News. Phil Steele’s magazine will be in late June.

Why Choose Smart Pharmacy?

As healthcare providers, we take care of our community. It’s our calling and our passion. Smart Pharmacy is dedicated to providing the highest quality of care to our patients. We understand that people are unique. Some patients have special needs that require a different approach to treatment. Smart Pharmacy can provide customized alternatives and options to better meet the needs of patients. FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE We offer a variety of programs to make your life easier. Saving you time and money is a passion of ours.

Even in the Internet age there is something exciting about having a hard copy of the magazines for leisurely summer reading. Yes, some of the magazines are quickly outdated due to suspensions and transfers, but there are enough depth charts, schedules, last year’s stats, recruiting wrap-ups and feature articles to keep fans excited about the season. College football writers keep the magazines handy for a quick reference during the season and beyond. You never know when a need arises to check a team’s roster or recruiting class.

SAFER IS SMARTER The reason you visit a pharmacy is because you need to be cared for. The most important factor in providing great care is safety. Here at Smart Pharmacy, we hold regular safety meetings with all of our staff to ensure that corners are not cut while doing our jobs. We go the extra mile in all facets of our business. We not only meet, but exceed the law’s safety requirements. Smart customers know that they can rely on us for the best medicine.

Every magazine has a tutorial on the upcoming four team playoff that answers questions on the date, location, sites, committee questions and criteria for selecting the teams.

WELL STAFFED AND HAPPY TO HELP Here at Jacksonville’s Smart Pharmacy, we don’t skimp on the staff. Rather than save money and run our store on a skeleton crew, we schedule plenty of help in order to provide you with the best care. When you walk in the door, you’re greeted with a smile. When you leave, you’ll have a smile on your face too!

Some of the magazines are national magazines that cover every school in Division I. Most of them also have a more concentrated conference preview that goes into much more detail than the national magazines. In the past, the excitement about picking up a preseason magazine was to see who was picked to win the national title. What is different about looking at the mags this year is the new playoff system should cause us to look at the top four teams not just the No. 1 team.

COMPOUNDING SPECIALISTS Smart Pharmacy prides itself as one of the few Compounding Pharmacies in the Jacksonville area. Our Pharmacists will work with your physician to formulate a tailored medication. For patients with allergies, customization finds appropriate alternatives. Changing a dosage form to a different route of administration is a common solution to your clinical dilemma. Customization is our specialty.

So far, Florida State has been the consensus No. 1 team with some combination of Alabama, Oklahoma, Ohio State and Oregon in or near the top four. Even the respected Steele, who likes to go out-of-the-box with his No. 1 pick, has the Noles as his top team.

MEDICINE DELIVERY Some of our customers are in a lot of pain. Others are made to be dizzy, drowsy or nauseous from their condition. Sometimes it is just not safe for you to be on the road. Therefore, we proudly offer medicine delivery to our customers. We can fill your prescription and bring it straight to your home or doctor’s office. Just ask us how.

It is easy to poke holes in the top group. Every team has a weakness: Alabama does not have a proven quarterback, Florida State loses several veteran receivers and some valuable defensive linemen, Oregon struggles in November with anyone who has a decent line of scrimmage, Ohio State’s schedule is usually too easy and Oklahoma has a tendency to struggle when picked to have a great season.

DRUG SHORTAGES As pharmaceutical experts, Bill and Greg spend a lot of time keeping up with their industry. There are certain factors that have shown in the past to lead to drug shortages. When we predict such a situation, we make sure and stock up in order to provide you with the best medicine, when you need it. Additionally, Smart Pharmacy’s Compounding Laboratory can formulate medications that are no longer commercially available or temporarily unavailable.

Alabama has been the typical pick to win the Western division and South Carolina (Athlon picks Georgia) to win the Eastern division. Several pundits have said this might be coach Steve Spurrier’s best Gamecocks team even without gutty quarterback Connor Shaw and talented, but inconsistent defensive lineman Javedeon Clowney.

Florida State is easily the beast of the ACC Atlantic division. North Carolina and Virginia Tech have been the choices of most of the magazines to win the Coastal division. Florida’s Will Muschamp tops the typical coaching hot-seat list in most of the magazines. Muschamp has said during his booster tour that he is confident new coordinator Kurt Roper can rectify many of the offensive ineptitude from last season. Florida has been picked to finish just inside the top 25 by most of the magazines while Miami has predicted in the 30’s. UCF has been predicted anywhere from the top 25 to No. 55 by various magazines. USF has been selected anywhere from the 50’s to near 100 depending on the magazine. If you are a college football fans, you should have at least one of the preseason magazines at your fingertips to catch up on your favorite team. Check out more blogs at iwantaBUZZ.com. If I’ve been injured, do I need a lawyer? Attorney Ron Sholes: The most frequent question I’m asked when it comes to a personal injury claim is “do I need a lawyer?” Without a doubt, the answer is yes! Unfortunately, insurance companies do not play fair when it comes to settling claims. It doesn’t matter whether it’s settling a claim against their insured or for their insured. It really makes no difference. Insurance adjusters are trained to be nice and sweet, yet ruthless when it comes to their bosses money. Very seldom does an insurance company make an offer to resolve a claim because it is in your best interest to take it.

It’s a wonder he has time to take a breath of oxygen with all of these responsibilities, and yet he attacks each and every one of them with the same intensity, vigor, and thoroughness that served him when running his own business.

There’s also more to “adjusting” claims than simply reading a medical report and trying to place an arbitrary number on someone’s damages. No two cases are the same and sometimes, what seems like a relatively minor injury can cause a lifetime of economic damages and pain and suffering. Having an attorney on your side that fully appreciates the long term economic and non-economic effects than an injury can have on you and your family can make all the difference.

You’ve Got a Friend in Jim What do oxygen and Jim Weinsier have in common? They both are quietly everywhere, but if you removed either of them, it would quickly be noticed, and things would start to fall apart in no time! Since 2007, when Mr. Weinsier sold his floating fountain business and moved with his wife, Peggy, to Amelia Island, he has been discovering and devoting himself to people and activities that make our island so special. Besides being a local artist and author, he is the President of the Petanque Club, Creator and Director of the Nassau Youth Writer’s Association, a Member of Friends of the Library, a Board Member

July 2014 • www.iwantaBUZZ.com

Mr. Weinsier shies away from the limelight, (today’s interview was a personal favor), and only steps forward when it serves to further a cause that might help someone else. Since Mr. Weinsier doesn’t brag, it is only through speaking to the people he works with that you get a real sense of how dear he is to each of them and how crucial he is to each project. Jim Weinsier gladly shares his business acumen, but also is willing to help with the actual labor that makes events like the Petanque America Open, Friends of the Library Block Party, County Youth Activity Fair, and the Amelia Island Blues Festival smashing hits. In addition to helping out, Mr. Weinsier is a leader. His recent project, with his group, the Nassau Youth Writer’s Club, resulted in the children penning and publishing an awesome coloring book which encourages kids to use the library. Jim Weinsier is an integral part of so much that makes Amelia great, because he happily does whatever is necessary in whatever capacity he is needed; he is a leader, a follower, a thinker, a doer, but most of all, he is a friend. He is rare and valuable; treasured by all, Jim Weinsier is truly a crucial element to our fair town.

t is pretty easy to taste a little slice of pizza heaven at Your Pie located in Tapestry Park! Dea Sims, owner of this customer-interactive franchise, discusses the mouthwatering nuances of this extremely unique business model.

YOUR PIE was founded literally just off Sorority Row at the University of Georgia and like the original Athens’ stores, we hire lots of students from both high school and from area colleges. We try not to take ourselves too seriously but we still want to have fun while we work. In store you’ll hear everything from classic rock all the way to current indie tunes.

Have any celebrities visited your business? YES,

we see lots of local sports greats on a regular basis - often their personal trainers introduce them to YOUR PIE. In Fleming Island, we see lots of elected officials. At our Southside location, you never know who will walk in our door with so many people who stay across the parking lot at the Aloft Hotel. We also see lots of the sports radio 1010XL talent as well as our friends at X102.9.

How long have you been in the industry and how did you get started? I’m a newcomer to the restaurant

industry. Prior to March 2013, I liked being on the other side

Our first store is in Fleming Island on County Rd. 220 in the Winn Dixie Shopping Center and our second location is in Tapestry Park, facing Southside Boulevard across the parking lot from the Aloft Hotel.

Do you have other items besides pizza? Yes, both our panini and bread bowl salads are very popular but then again, I know we have some guests who just stop by for our gelati and sorbets! Oh, and we sell a lot of craft beer too. What seem to be your best selling menu items?

“The Nat” (named after the founder’s wife, Natalie) is probably our most popular pizza - fresh basil pesto sauce, mozzarella, feta, spinach, sun-dried tomatoes and roasted chicken, yum! Our “Chicken Bacon Club” is a big seller too - roasted chicken, bacon, mozzarella, spinach, tomato and ranchy marinara sauce all baked open faced on our house made rustic focaccia bread. For salads it’s not even close - we sell more Caprese Salads than all the others combined. Spinach, fresh mozzarella, basil, garlic and extra virgin olive oil drizzled on top with our house made balsamic vinaigrette on the side. If you opt for the bread bowl too, you’ll get a nice side of warm marinara to dip the bread into as well.

Do you have any specials? We offer Happy Hour pricing

(2 for 1 beer & wine) Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. On Sundays it’s Happy Hour pricing all day. On Monday nights Kids Eat Free 5 p.m. from 9 p.m. with the purchase of each adult entrée. We’ve got lots of other impromptu specials you can find on our Facebook pages - YOUR PIE Fleming Island and YOUR PIE Southside.

AMELIA ANGLER OUTFITTERS

Time to go fishing, and it is important you look your best, because we all know if you reel in that big fish, and he sees you looking dull and drab, he is going to take one look and jump back into the water! Seriously, proper outfitting for an outdoor fishing experience can make an important difference. The fish may not actually abandon you, but you will be a lot more comfortable, have ease of movement, and even receive sun protection with the proper clothes and accessories. You can find everything you need from head, (hats and sunglasses), to toe, (flip flops), at the Amelia Island Angler. They carry leading quality brands like Guy Harvey, Salt Life, and MOJO. Look and feel great when you shop at the Angler. When you reel in that whopper, you and your fish will be prepared for a killer photo op!

-2- KNOW...

BUZZ: How long have you worked here and what attracted you to work at Lynch’s? MATT: I’d say six years. I’ve always worked in restaurants and I thought it would be a fun place to work. MISSY: Two months. I had a good friend who worked here and we worked together at Al’s Pizza for five years. So, I just

wanted to make a change and come out to the beach.

ANNA: Six months. The beach and the busy business. BUZZ: What is the story behind the dollars on the ceiling? ANNA: People write their birthdays, memories, just different things, and Lynch’s has been doing this for years.

The pub counted not too long ago that there was about 9,000 dollar bills on the ceiling. There is definitely more now. It’s just a way to leave your mark.

MISSY: There are so many people that come in here. If they come back then it’s something they can look at. ANNA: When they come back, they remember it’s there.

INTERVIEW WITH LYNCH’S IRISH PUB STAFF

By Elizabeth Thompson

BUZZ: Do you feel like you are leaving your mark here? MATT: Yes. On Wednesday, we have a burger and beer special for $10, and lately it’s become very popular. Since I’m

one of the main cooks on Wednesdays, I feel like it’s partially because of my cooking.

Known for their delicious food and lively atmosphere, Lynch’s Irish Pub is a staple in MISSY: Oh yes, he’s great. We have a band that will call ahead of time and ask Matt to make them some wings. So, Jacksonville Beach nightlife. This bar is so inviting that patrons are encouraged to he’s got a wings fan. “leave their mark” by decorating the ceiling with personalized dollar bills. It is also ANNA: Yes, the food here is awesome. We are always planning what we are going to eat tonight. common to see Lynch’s staff bellying up to the bar in their off time. They enjoy the pub and coworkers that much. In fact, I didn’t sit down with one staff member for an interview; I sat down with three. At Lynch’s they interview as a team which was very apparent as I spoke with one of their cooks, Matt “Matty Loops” Lott, and bartenders, Missy Lafferty and Anna Heslin, about what keeps people coming back for more. 46

Does mayo give you the summer time ewwws? This Samuel Adams Cherry Wheat Potato Salad will chase the “ewwws” away! Samuel Adams Cherry Wheat is created with beautiful Michigan cherries and honey. When you taste this fruity wheat beer, you smell and taste the cherries immediately. It’s so refreshing, and well, YUMMY! So, I thought, “Why don’t you use this to make a light and refreshing potato salad?” Lucky for you fans of summer time, I did just that. It’s prefect for a party or a picnic, with no mayo. Your cross fit trainer will never know something so tasty crossed your lips – cause it won’t hit your hips! Check out Henriettibles. com for more craft beer & summer time recipes (like a Samuel Adams Cherry Wheat ice cream).

What is unique about your bar?

Do you serve any local wines or brews?

The Wine Bar is an oasis amidst a thriving beach bar community. We provide a lounge atmosphere that transitions beautifully to allow for higher volume, live music, and dancing! Between the Open Mic Night, karaoke, local musicians, and wine tastings, there is always fun to be had and new friends to be made.

We currently have Aardwolf, Bold City and Greenroom beers on draft, and we plan to add other local brews as soon as we can get our hands on them.

Describe the atmosphere: To put the atmosphere into a word: welcoming. There is no age demographic or type casting. In this bar, a first-time guest walks out with a new friend and a new favorite wine. Our regulars are phenomenal and amazingly do their part to make sure every person that walks in “on their watch” is well taken care of. It’s a beautiful thing to see. When is Happy Hour? Tuesday – Sunday, 5 p.m.- 9 p.m.: $1 off Draft Beer, $2 Jell-O shots, $3 Domestic Bottled Beer, $4 House Wines, and $5 Sangria. Turn heat to medium low. Add dried cherries, thyme, salt and pepper. Cook for 2 more minutes. Add Samuel Adams Cherry Wheat & habanero balsamic vinegar. Allow to reduce to almost half. In large bowl, toss mixture with potatoes (while everything is still warm). Allow to cool 15 minutes, then cover & chill for a couple hours or over night. Enjoy!

What kind of weekly drink specials do you all offer?

Do you all have music or any kind of events? Wednesday and Sunday are our Open Mic Nights, Thursday is Karaoke, Friday and Saturday we have live acoustic music. Wine Tastings are held once a month on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. What compliments do you hear most often from your customers? We receive a lot of positive feedback about the ambience and the intimacy experienced through the atmosphere and the personable staff. What was the last big change you made to your drink menu? Creating the sparkling cocktail list. It took some group effort and plenty of practice runs, but we love to offer something that’s not simply “beer and wine.”

Clicquot on the Clock every Thursday = Veuve Clicquot Champagne by the glass, the price is the hour of day ($5 at 5 o’clock, $6 at 6 o’clock etc.) $2 Jell-O shots and moonshine shots daily. Tell us about your best selling drink To tell the truth, it’s a tie between one of our wine-based cocktails and one of our wines offered by the glass. First, our version of the Cosmopolitan is exquisite and fantastically similar to the original. As far as wine goes, one of the preferred glasses we provide is the Head High Pinot Noir. It gathers its name from the surfers that helped develop said Sonoma Pinot and named it according to the same satisfying fervor one gets from approaching a “head high” (6 ft. or more) wave.

Sourcing Suds

Brew Time By Marc Wisdom

By Brian Little

Summer time is the perfect time for a refreshing wheat beer with its smooth, easy-drinking character and refreshing flavors. While wheat actually contributes very little flavor to a beer but what it does contribute is a silky mouth feel and thick foamy head. Wheat beers have great carbonation and have light flavoring that makes them perfect for summer consumption. There are essentially three types of wheat beers; a Bavarian style called Weissbier, the Belgian Witbier, and the sour beers that are also predominantly Belgian. Wheat beers pair particularly well with light summer meals of salads, steamed or poached fish, and grilled chicken dishes. WEISSBIER The German Weissbier – literally “white beer” in German – is one of the best known wheat beer style. It features aromas and flavors reminiscent of banana and clove and is served quite cold. Most Weissbiers are of the hefeweizen variety, which means yeast beer and refers to the cloudy nature of the brew. Usually the German purity laws would not allow wheat malt to be used in the production of beer, but an exception was made so that wealthy Germans could enjoy this refreshing style. Excellent examples of this style of beer are Tucher, Franziskaner, and Widmer Brothers. WITBIER This style of wheat beer nearly became extinct had it not been for the rise of Hoegarden a particularly refreshing example of the Belgian style. The Belgian style like its German cousin is cloudy with smooth character, but the Belgians liked to add flavorings like coriander and orange peel to kick up the flavor and thus make the beer even more refreshing. Try a pint of Blanche des Bruxelles, or the delightfully fruity, yet crisp Pyramid Apricot Ale.

Follow me on twitter @beerapostle Sourcing Suds is a column by the Beer Apostle, Brian Little, recognizing beer that’s served and brewed locally.

SOURS Belgium is also known for producing distinctly sour beers that can be as refreshing as a tart lemonade on a hot summer day. Known as Lambics, these wheat beers are spontaneously fermented meaning that wild yeast is allowed to inoculate the beer rather than a brewer adding the yeast. Many Lambic brews are fruit flavored like the raspberry framboise or the cherry kreik. German sours include the Berliner Weiss that is often enjoyed with lemon or raspberry syrup added to it. Foods to pair with these beers depend on the style of beer you are drinking, but framboise is delightful with chocolate cakes or brownies as is kreik. GOLDEN TAP BREW OF THE MONTH Harpoon UFO White A cold bottle of this summer refresher is just the ticket on a hot July afternoon. Light and crisp, this beer follows 300-year-old Belgian tradition by including ingredients like orange peel and spices. Citrus and grain come through in both the nose and flavor of this brew making it a perfect partner to grilled fish and other lighter summer fare.. Marc Wisdom enjoys hot days with cold beers and talks about it regularly at his site: www.JaxBeerGuy.com.

Source GRAPE & GRAIN EXCHANGE

During the prohibition years, “speakeasies” referred to bars and establishments that illegally sold alcohol. Such places were secret, hidden, and known only by locals. Prohibition ended in 1933, and a modernday speakeasy refers to a retro-style bar. Jacksonville has its very own retro parlour and speakeasy, Grape & Grain Exchange (GGX), located in San Marco. Owner, Bob Smith focuses on craft wine, beer, and spirits. He brings his 20+ years of knowledge and experience, including being a certified Wine Sommelier, into everything he does at GGX. “You’d be surprised how many people still feel intimidated by it. We try to take the intimidation out of the equation. When people come to The Grape and Grain Exchange we want them to feel at home, and we want them to leave feeling like they just learned something useful no matter how long their stay,” explained Smith.

Suds CIGAR CITY WHITE OAK JAI ALAI

White Oak Jai Alai takes Cigar City’s awardwinner IPA and ages it on American White Oak. The wood adds a nice smoothness to the beer, bringing hints of vanilla and oak to the otherwise citrusy and tropical IPA. I pick up grapefruit, apricot, orange, and a hint of coconut. While the White Oak does mellow the hop flavors a tad, there’s still plenty of hop notes to please the average IPA-lover. White Oak jai Alai finishes with a citrus kick, sweet tropical flavors, and mild hop-bitterness. Cigar City Brewing Company is located in Tampa, FL. Grape & Grain Exchange is located at 2000 San Marco BLVD. Check out GrapeAndGrainExchange.com for hours and events. Etiquette Essentials By Eric Engel Explosive Etiquette

- E. Langner, Siam, ID

Professor Dubious Says: When you spin your body rapidly, air rushes

across your skin, causing a sudden drying of your epithelial cells. To replenish the moisture in these cells, fluid is drawn from capsules under the kneecaps. This results in the knee joints making a sort of clicking sound as they move. This sound causes a minor irritation in the tympanic membrane of the ear, which makes a subtle shift in the perception of speech, adding to words what is perceived as a slight Portuguese accent. Why this causes a sensation of dizziness is anybody’s guess.

Why do stars twinkle? - A. Weinberg, San Francisco, CA

Professor Dubious Says: As a natural result of the inherent

stability of matter, everything twinkles (except, due to physical principles not well understood, tapioca flavoring and ferrets). However, when we look at most things, because the speed of light is so incredibly fast, the twinkling whizzes by us far too rapidly to perceive. Stars, on the other hand are staggeringly far away from us. (To get an idea of the distance to the nearest star, imagine laying every box of breakfast cereal every sold end to end. Think about how long it would take to do that. That’s how long it would take to get to the nearest star in a spaceship if you brought along two other people so there could always be someone driving.) The light from stars takes such a long time to get to us, that it is worn out by the time it arrives and moves slow enough that we can see the twinkling.

Why do we carve a person’s face into a pumpkin at Halloween? - S. Scott, San Diego, CA

Professor Dubious Says: The original idea was to carve a picture of a pumpkin into a person’s face, but volunteers were scarce, so the plan was switched.

July 2014 • www.iwantaBUZZ.com

Ahh… July Fourth. The day we celebrate our freedom from English rule by blowing things up. But more often than not, this demonstration is just an excuse for grown men to fulfill boyish dreams. Such was the case when I attended my brother’s party in the country. Each family brought a delegate (always a man), who walked to the garage with an armload of explosives and laid them with all the others. Fireworks are aesthetically designed to give pleasure in the actual explosion. Nothing has to be destroyed in order for it to be beautiful. But this happens at night, and men get anxious as they’re waiting for darkness. So what do they do? They find things to destroy while they’re waiting. Each year families showed up, not just with fireworks, but also with food. People brought bananas, rice, meat loafs, flapjacks, pots of stew, entire hams, and one guy even brought several 5-gallon buckets of jello. The day show was more exciting than the night show. We spent the afternoon filling the yard with bits and scraps of food. Then we set up a little layout of the largest fireworks in the middle of the yard, which we could detonate remotely from far off. We left it there to start off the night show,

and went inside to eat and relax for a while. When it was dark enough, we all filed back outside, and lined up at the edge of the yard. My brother connected the detonator to the battery and flicked the switch. Immediately, the area lit up. Sparks were flying everywhere, both on the ground and in the air. What we hadn’t expected, was the large number of wild animals gathering in his yard to feast on all the food we had blown up. And none of those animals were expecting the explosions now being set off all around them. They scattered in every direction, but the majority of them (because of where the fireworks were situated) headed straight for the observers. Raccoons, possums, rats, wild dogs, and feral cats attacked us. The women screamed, the kids cried, and the men rushed about futilely trying to stop the onslaught of critters. My own wife had a possum land on her lap and play dead. In the end, six people needed rabies shots, twelve children were traumatized, eight men were sleeping on the couch for the next week, and my brother was socially ruined. I know now that wasting food is not socially acceptable.

July Horoscope Written by Kyle, Astrologer Extraordinaire

Aries (March 21- April 19)

They may be shiny, but ya got to let them go. Sure your mate is fun, but keeping someone around for a trophy isn’t cool. Time to find someone you’re really into. Anyways, trophies eventually collect dust and tarnish unless they’re plastic.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20)

Head turner on the loose! Venus is doing stuff in Taurus this month and that has your confidence at an all time high. You won’t be the hottest one in the room (as if), but you will be working the room like you are. With your mojo working, you’re bound to find romance this month.

Gemini (May 21 – June 21)

We all know you like to voice your opinions, but maybe, just maybe you should try using that filter between your brain and your tongue. It will make sure people stick around for the rest of the conversation. This month I would practice the quiet game because speaking freely isn’t the answer.

Cancer (June 22 – July 22)

Your nomadic eleventh house is loose this month (and so are you) making you curious and bound for new adventures. A swingers life! Well, sort of. It’s still you we’re talking about, and you’re no Brad Pitt. But I don’t’ want to crap on your swinger month. Grab a vine and go crazy!

Leo (July 23 – August 22)

Seems your current romantic tactics are not producing the results you seek. Try a different online profile. A little sexier picture on that dating sight. Who cares it was from 2008; you looked better back then anyways. Everyone is lying, so you are just leveling the playing field.

Virgo (August 23 – September 22)

This month you need to concentrate on yourself and get things back in order. All those recent late nights have been fun, but let’s face it… you’re boring. You couldn’t keep up that pace anyways. Boring isn’t all that bad though…(yes it is).

Libra (September 23 – October 22)

You think you are so clever reading between the lines. Sometimes, no just means no. Not everything has a hidden meaning. I know sometimes no means maybe, and occasionally yes, but mostly it means no, unless it’s on a Tuesday, or is it a Saturday? #whatdoesnomean

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

So you think you’ve found love or a love-interest and you want everyone to know. Easy there. First see how things go before shouting from the rooftops (which means telling everyone via social media). Typically you try a bite of new food first, you don’t just go woofing it down like you’re in a contest. Same rules.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)

Know that person you’ve wanted to ask out, but you’re afraid your friends will make fun of you for? This is the month to do it. Show your friends how great of a person he or she is. And if that person ends up a dud, you can revel in the fact you made the attempt as your friends spend a lifetime bringing up, “The Mistake.”

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)

Looks like you’re going to have an intimate relationship with yourself this month. Take yourself out and get your hair done, massage, whatever makes you feel good because you’ll have extra money from the loneliness.

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)

Looks like things with your current mate have gone south. “Let’s take a break.” What’s that even mean? Sure this thing is over, but not for you! You have enough love for the both of you! If you are agreeing with this right now you should be slapped. Seriously. It’s over. Move on!

Pisces (February 19 – March 20)

Try being a real friend this month. Instead of always agreeing with everything and sounding like an echo, try offering some real advice. Say something helpful instead of, “yeah, I know what you mean.” We all know you don’t.
