Making a Difference: non-profit & charity leaders in our community

The mission of Hope at Hand cultivates wellness through art and poetry. We connect very quickly with adolescents who don’t normally trust adults. Once trust is established, they work hard to make personal gains. I have yet to come across a participant who does not want to improve the quality of their life. We provide effective tools that promote creativity, independence, wellness, choice and change while embracing their desire to become productive members of society.”

The Most Interesting Person I’ve Interviewed This Month

PETER JENNISON

Beaches Fine Arts Series, Inc.

He’s an attorney, a husband and dad, and a battle-tested Iraq War vet. The First Coast’s own Peter Jennison is also an incredibly talented musician, with powerful songs that speak to the pain and longing of deployment.

BeachesFineArts.org For the past 42 years, Beaches Fine Arts (BFAS) has presented world-class performing artists in concerts and educational outreach programs completely free of charge to everyone in our community. The staff of BFAS believe that great music should be heard by all people and enhances the fabric of the community, which undergirds the BFAS mission to remain free of charge. BFAS artists range from classical to jazz to world music performers. Each artist performs educational programs, ranging from mini-concerts to workshops to master classes for various students. Known throughout the state by teachers, the organization received the 2012 Florida Music Educators Association’s Distinguished Service Award for its outstanding educational programming. BFAS is known nationally and is featured regularly on NPR’s Performance Today with concert recordings, the only presenter in North Florida with this distinction. BFAS is able to continue this gift to the community through the financial support of grants from both the City of Jacksonville and State of Florida, as well as corporate support from many local and national businesses and the stalwart support of individual donors. A schedule of upcoming concerts can be found at BeachesFineArts.org

First Coast Connect with Melissa Ross

A few years ago, Jennison released “Longing for Home (Songs From War),” an album he wrote while deployed in Iraq.

Now, he’s out with a new release titled “Coming Home,” which he wrote in 2012 during another deployment to Kuwait and Afghanistan.

“I wanted to celebrate the touching reunions we see when soldiers are reunited with their families,” says Jennison, “and also pay tribute to the many who are wounded or who return in flag-draped coffins.”

The Bridge of Northeast Florida BridgeJax.com The Bridge of Northeast Florida is hosting its 2nd Annual Jazz on the Bridge fundraising event to prepare inner-city youth for excellence. This exciting event will be held February 14, 2015, at the Jacksonville Public Library Downtown from 7 to 11 p.m. Jazz on the Bridge is a progressive concert to include performances featuring Miles J. Davis accompanied by his Jazz ensemble, the Bridge House of Dance, other local jazz performers, a silent auction and heavy hors d’oeuvres.

Jennison is a talented piano player and composer, and his songs are incredibly poignant and powerful. I urge you to give them a listen! Learn more at www.PeterJennison.com.

As a proven leader for 32 years, The Bridge is a nonprofit organization committed to promoting the development of healthy, productive, self-sufficient youth and families by providing comprehensive educational, social, health and employment programs that target more 3,500 students annually. Many Bridge families reside in economically overburdened and disadvantaged communities where the risk is high for negative outcomes such as teen pregnancy, high school dropout rates and crime. The Jazz on the Bridge event will help promote these children to remain in school, improve their academic performance, reduce recidivism, gain pertinent healthcare education, receive intensive case management, and attain college scholarships.

L’Arche International is celebrating 50 years of building a more human and inclusive world for adults with intellectual and physical disabilities. The mission of L’Arche Harbor House is to bring people with and without disabilities into relationships, beginning with mutual relationship between people of differing abilities and backgrounds. Orthopedic Surgeon Southeast Orthopedic Specialists

BUZZ: Was it always your goal to become an orthopedic surgeon? Tell us about your journey. DR. ML: As with most kids growing up, my dream jobs were incredible things popular in the media. Being from Canada, I narrowed the list to becoming a professional hockey player, like my idol Wayne Gretzky, or to becoming a spy like my other hero, James Bond (as played by the suave Roger Moore). All of this changed one day when mom discovered a lump on my lower leg that seemed to be getting larger over time. My parents (and myself, I suppose) were devastated to find out that I had chondrosarcoma, a form of bone cancer that is common in adults in their fifties, not 10-year-old boys.

We speak VA so you don’t have to

My journey with bone cancer posed an obvious obstacle to my future as the next star athlete or international man of mystery. However, by the grace of God, we were near some of the world’s top orthopedic surgeons in Toronto. My right leg (and my life) was saved after several operations. My parents’ determination and prayers ensured I had every opportunity to have a “normal life” and become the person I am today. My mother, being a schoolteacher, soon assumed the role of academic nurturer and sacrificed her career so that I did not fall behind in school. My dad, being a strong Catholic Canadian who prided himself as our family’s leader, ensured that I never missed a hockey game, even if it was from the stands in a wheelchair or with my leg casted. He did everything he could so that I could participate with my peers, no matter what adaptive device he had to “MacGyver.”

person (Wayne, as I call him). In all seriousness, these people encouraged me to push through the physical and emotional difficulties in my rehabilitation. To this day, I recognize that it is my responsibility as a doctor to motivate and encourage my patients towards recovery and be there for them above and beyond their actual surgery. My experience with healthcare as a child drove me to pursue it as a career. I focused on orthopedics early in medical school and was exposed to all fields within orthopedics during residency. Surprisingly, rather than pursue pediatric tumour surgery as a sub-specialty, adult reconstruction (hip and knee replacements) became my passion. The advances in this field captured my interest so much that I went on to do two more fellowships. My first fellowship, under Dr. Richard Santore in San Diego, provided extensive exposure and training in treatment of arthritic and pre-arthritic conditions of the hip. I then went to study under Dr. Allan Gross in Toronto, a world expert in performing complex hip and knee replacements. Both of these men were instrumental in me becoming the surgeon I am today. You can see that when I tell people orthopedics has been part of my life since I remember, it is true! BUZZ: You were one of the leaders recognized at the Legacy of Leaders dinner and in the Portrait of Leadership Gallery that was held at Ocean 60. What does being a leader mean to you?

DR. ML: Being chosen as a leader has been a huge honor. To be good leader, one must truly embrace and represent those you are leading. One must be confident in their abilities, but always approachable and encouraging to the team involved. These qualities are key to inspiring and motivating a team towards success. I try to lead During my multiple surgeries and rehab stints at Toronto’s my staff and patients by this philosophy. When Hospital for Sick Children, I met and was inspired by surgeons challenges arise, I encourage reflection and revaluation and other patients. I even got to meet Wayne Gretzky in to move forward.

THE ARTS

Be On The Look Out For Bryan LeBoeuf

I

nformed by European masters, LeBoeuf’s careful compositions incorporate beautifully painted surfaces and almost baroque lighting effects. His tightly controlled technique, representational subject matter and subtly manipulated compositions are meant to create a through-the-looking-glass illusion, removing barriers between viewers and the images. Through his cropping, positioning and modeling of figures, LeBoeuf creates the impression of unseen space, asking viewers to imagine the focus of the attention of a figure who gazes into space beyond the confines of the canvas.

“If all we had to do was manage craft! Look at the French Academy. My God! Every student in an atelier—they’re all extraordinary,” LeBoeuf told Morris Museum of Art Curator Jay Williams in an interview. “Their technique is like a camera could do it. Technique in picturemaking won’t save the work; but without it, it will probably die.” See LeBoeuf’s work in “Get Real” at MOCA Jacksonville through January 4th.

FEATURED EVENTS

PROJECT ATRIUM: ANGELA STRASSHEIM Now-March 1

ROBERT LEEDY “WATERCOLORS” Now-Jan. 7

MOCA Jacksonville MOCAJacksonville.org

First Street Gallery FirstStreeGalleryArt.com

Photographer Angela Strassheim illustrates transitional points in our lives—particularly the precious, fleeting nature of childhood and adolescence. Many photographs feature her nieces and nephews at several phases of their lives. Half of the collection has never been exhibited before. The large-format prints, some as large as 75 inches wide, can be viewed from all three floors of the monumental Haskell Atrium Gallery where they are hung salon-style.

Florida watercolorist Robert Leedy is known for his strong sense of light and color. Loose washes of bold, luminous color readily define his unique personal style. Leedy grew up in Jacksonville and graduated from Valdosta State University with a BFA in Art. He enjoys nature and a large portion of his work is done outdoors.

CLOTHING AND FASHION IN THE CUMMER MUSEUM’S PERMANENT COLLECTION Now-Feb. 8

SHADOWS AND LIGHT Opening Reception, Jan. 15

The fables included in “The Jon Gordon Box Set” have inspired readers around the world. For the first time, eight of Jon Gordon’s most engaging and powerful fables are together in one limited-edition box set. The collection will fuel your life, work and team with vision, passion, positivity and purpose. Gordon’s masterful storytelling and meaningful messages make the set a perfect gift for professional colleagues, students and families alike. Jon Gordon has worked closely with numerous Fortune 500 companies, professional and college sports teams, hospitals, and leaders in business and education to develop positive and high-performing teams. This powerful and inspiring collection of fables from best-selling author Jon Gordon features lessons and insight that will empower you to make positive changes in your professional and personal life.

American masterworks are placed in context with European precedents while focusing on the following themes: Greco-Roman trends; Elizabethan antecedents; Marie Antoinette and the lure of the shepherdess; the influence of Japonisme following the opening of Japan to regular trade in 1853; and the mystique of Seminole patchwork.

Hogan Gallery, The Art Center II Studios TACJacksonville.org Visual artists are invited to produce works that portray shadows, light or both. A shadow is a dark shape that appears on a surface when someone or something moves between the surface and a source of light; an area of darkness created when a source of light is blocked. Light is the form of energy that makes it possible to see things: the brightness produced by the sun, by fire, a lamp, etc.

THEATRE IN THE KNOW

Jamison Webb

Best of The Second City will play at Jacksonville’s Times-Union Center’s Terry Theater Saturday, January 31, at 8 p.m. for one performance only! “Nothing is funnier to me than someone who takes something very trivial very seriously.” –Jamison Webb Jamison Webb is thrilled to be performing with The Second City. He hails from Fort Myers, Florida, and is a graduate of the University of Florida (Go Gators!), where he performed sketch and improv with Theatre Strike Force. He performs at iO with Gold Star and at the Upstairs Gallery with Rotten (when they can remember they have a show). He thanks his family, Holly, and his friends for their love and support. Follow him on Twitter: @jamisonwebb

BUZZ: In what ways is The Second City unconventional in its approach to theatre and comedy? JW: Improvisation is the core of The Second City’s approach to comedy. Actors write and re-write a scene multiple times by improvising it until they land on a version of the scene that works. It’s an organic and exciting way to craft comedy. We’re also very responsive to current events. Whereas a play written in the 1930s can’t directly comment on today’s headlines, a The Second City show can touch upon things that happened in the world that very day.

of archaic language or drawn-out scenes, which is probably unfair. There’s such a great energy to any kind of live theatre, whether it’s Shakespeare or The Second City. I think what The Second City does especially well is combine elements of comedy, traditional dramatic theatre and music into a really exciting show.

BUZZ: I read that The Second City is bringing improv-based methodologies to the corporate sector; could you elaborate on that? WB: The basics of improvisation—agreement, collaboration, trust, confidence—are translatable across all walks of life and all professions. The Second City regularly conducts BUZZ: How do you think the style of The Second City relates to a younger generation corporate workshops that touch upon these cornerstones, which are great tools for teamthat traditional theatre seems to lack? building, brainstorming and public speaking, among many other facets of corporate life. Players By The Sea Players by the Sea presents history that sizzles! “Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde” Unfolding on the Studio Stage January 9 – 24, Players by the Sea presents the fascinating and confounding story of Oscar Wilde’s flamboyant swath through English literature, high society and low life. At the height of his success in 1895, with two of his most brilliant comedies (“An Ideal Husband” and “The Importance of Being Earnest”) reigning in London’s West End, Wilde brought a court action for libel against a brutish aristocrat, the Marquess of Queensberry. It led to his downfall, imprisonment, and death in disgrace and exile. Was Wilde willfully self-destructive? Or pitifully delusional and blinded by love? A martyr to repressive Victorian hypocrisy? Or the victim of his own egotism and arrogance? Perhaps all of the above? Moises Kaufman’s riveting docu-drama “Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde” explores this fateful tale in words drawn directly from the court records, newspaper accounts of the time and eye-witness memoirs. Debuting Off-Off-Broadway in 1997 (featuring Jacksonville actor Michael Emerson in the lead role), the show created a sensation and subsequently moved OffBroadway to great acclaim. Directed by Dave Alan Thomas, the show features Bill Ratliff as Oscar Wilde and an eight-person ensemble re-creating more than twenty real-life characters, from Queen Victoria to sleazy “rent boys.” The ensemble showcases the talents of David Benfield, Noah Bennett, Ron Shreve, Kelby Siddons, Karen Overstreet, Kevin Bodge, Daniel Austin and Roger Lowe. Performances are January 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 22, 23, 24 at 8 p.m. Sunday matinee performance January 18 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $23 for adults; $20 for students, seniors and military. Thursday Student Nights offer half price admission with valid student ID. For information and tickets, call (904)249-0289 or log onto www.PlayersByTheSea.org. january 2015 • www.iwantaBUZZ.com

In 1895, Oscar Wilde brought a libel suit against his youthful lover’s father for publicly maligning him as a sodomite. Wilde was then put on trial for acts of “gross indecency” and for a vision of art that outraged Victorian propriety. This masterpiece turns the trials into riveting human and intellectual drama by expertly interweaving courtroom testimony with excerpts from Wilde’s writings and the words of his contemporaries.

Theater in the River City By Tamara McClaran, Northeast Florida Theater Enthusiast THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY ROCKS THE ALHAMBRA THEATRE & DINING Singer/songwriter Buddy Holly was a pioneer in the rock and roll world — a rising star who changed the face of popular music before his untimely death in 1959. “The Buddy Holly Story,” a jukebox musical celebrating the songs of Holly and other early rockers, opens the 2015 season at The Alhambra Theatre & Dining. The show opens on Dec. 30 and runs through Feb. 8. The musical tells the true story of Holly’s meteoric rise to fame to the top of the record charts until his tragic death less than two years later. The show is back at the Alhambra because of popular demand.

“The show has been popular with audiences not just here, but all over the world,” said Alhambra Managing Partner Craig Smith. “It is partially because the music is so good and so familiar.” The show’s song list includes well-liked hits from the 1950s, including “Peggy Sue,” “Oh Boy,” “Maybe Baby,” “That’ll Be the Day,” “Raining In My Heart,” Ritchie Valens’ “La Bamba” and the Big Bopper’s “Chantilly Lace.” While music is a focus, the show also tells a compelling story about a groundbreaking musician who wasn’t satisfied with the norm. And while everyone knows how the story ends, it isn’t told in a sad way.

“‘The Buddy Holly Story’ is not a two-hour eulogy,” Smith said. “It is a high -energy celebration of a guy that changed rock and roll. He pushed the envelope and his influence is alive today.”

Tickets can be purchased at www.AlhambraJax.com or by calling (904) 641-1212.

Sharing healthy routines with our children is a great way to help them get a good start to their physical health. As much as technology is an important part of our lives, it doesn’t replace physical activity or developing healthy eating. Jessie recommends putting down the iPad and smart phones and enjoying physical playtime with children. “It really is all about balance,” Jessie says, “and finding out what makes you feel better in mind and body.” For Jessie, it all comes down to four principles of life: movement, food, mind power and family. Each of these is key to building a successful life and providing a successful model for our children.

RINGLING BROS AND BARNUM & BAILEY CIRCUS RING MASTER

BUZZ: What is one thing most

people don’t realize is part of the job of being a circus ring master?

DAVID:

Being a ringmaster is a way of life. The job doesn’t just stop when I walk out of the ring. There is an importance in establishing a positive relationship with the cast, crew, band, management and concessions team that all equally help build “The Greatest Show On Earth.” Everyone must feel special and significant while simultaneously appreciating the amazing talents that you’re surrounded with. We travel with people from 13 different countries, so there is never a shortage of conversations as we continue to grow as a unit and learn about each other’s culture and heritage. Ringling Bros. is not only a show that brings families together; we are intrinsically a family ourselves.

BUZZ: What advice would you

give to a kid that wants to join the circus?

DAVID: An amazing part of being with

Ringling Bros. is that you realize that people are capable of amazing feats of superhuman bravery, strength and resilience. An important message that we implement in each Ringling Bros. show is that everyone is powerful beyond measure. With hard work, persistence and passion, anything is possible. The quote that changed my life and led me to where I am now is, “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” The most important thing to remember when following your dreams is that if you never try, you’ll never know.

For the last five years, I have been blessed with this written platform (and a very patient editor). This generous word count and abundant plethora of delish Jacksonville dishes has allowed me to share with you, dearest BUZZ’ers, restaurants that deserve forkable favor. Once in a while in this line of work, you find a spot that gets you really excited; a shout from the rooftops kind of eatery, if you will: “This new spot is a definite Two Thumbs Up!” Margaritas, in its infancy at only 3 months old, is that place for me. Locally-owned and operated, this is not your average combo-oriented Mexican food joint. From the moment I walked into Margaritas, I was excited to be there. The music was playing, the interior was immaculate and festive, and the owner himself greeted me with the warmest welcome I’ve ever experienced outside of my own grandma’s kitchen. Instantly you find yourself imbued in the food enthusiasm around you, not to mention some killer margaritas! At a price point of only $3.99 ($2.99 during Happy Hour), you’re definitely going to need to imbibe the chips and house-made salsa as well! After my smiling salutation, my equally friendly and knowledgeable server, Idalia, went over some very important aspects of the restaurant. She told me that ownership is onsite. One owner

works the front of the house and the second owner runs the back of the house as executive chef and manager. This business model says to me that quality control is never in question (another thumb up).

The price points here are amazing as well, starting at around $4!

Saturday was one of those food adventures where my eating associate and I decided it was time for something new. We ventured into Mandarin via San Jose Boulevard and spotted a new moniker gone unnoticed in months past in the large strip mall behind the Outback Steakhouse. Within moments, Fishermans Galley Grill & Bar stood before my hungry compadre and me. We bounded through the glass doors of this new-to-us fish fare find like clam-chowdergiddy schoolgirls.

My chewing cohort ordered grilled shrimp with a couple of sides and this, too, was a good menu item. The large shrimp were well-seasoned and there was no rubbery bite in the bunch.

Our arrival prompted immediate and smiling service and we were quickly seated at a table amongst other chatty chowhounds. The fish dishes I observed others around us swimming through looked amazing. The lunch specials were being served from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and we saw a beautiful-looking flounder dish with hushpuppies, carrots and cole slaw; a crab cake platter with homemade mac n’ cheese and broccoli; a gorgeous fish sandwich and fries; some tasty-looking gator tail; and an individual who was diving into a huge platter of fried shrimp. Yup, we found the specialty, and in a tasty twist of fate, it happened to be another special of the day: 50-cent shrimp!

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: Paper Diamond is a one-of-a-kind artist who brings his own unique music to the table, a sound unparalleled to anything else around today. The Paper Diamond sound has raw energy and the kind of dramatic anticipation only a seasoned producer can incite. His signature style combines memorable melodies, space-age synthesizers, catchy vocals, chops, glitches and serious experimentation to create a rich listening experience. His music can’t really be categorized or labeled — he produces high-energy electronic music that sticks to no genre and strives to broaden the listener’s musical spectrum. As The Huffington Post says, “Paper Diamond’s sound has the capacity to make a packed dance floor vibe as one.” When his debut mix for BBC Radio 1’s Diplo and Friends aired, Diplo mentioned that “every festival in the world is not complete without booking Paper Diamond.” Paper Diamond’s latest singles and original productions include “Black Rose” and “WYLIN,” which received 250,000 plays within one week and was trending as the number one track nationwide on Soundcloud.

MERLE HAGGARD -MerleHaggard.com

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: The word “legend” usually makes an appearance at some point when discussing Merle Haggard. It’s an acknowledgment of his artistry and his standing as “the poet of the common man.” It’s a tribute to his incredible commercial success and to the lasting mark he has made, not just on country music, but on American music as a whole. It’s apt in every way but one. The term imposes an aura of loftiness that’s totally at odds with the grit and heart of Haggard’s songs. “I’d be more comfortable with something like ‘professor,’” he once told a reporter, and the description suits him. Studying, analyzing and observing the details of life around him, Haggard relays what he sees, hears and feels through his songs. The lyrics are deceptively simple, the music exceptionally listenable. Others who have lived through those same situations recognize the truth in the stories he tells. Haggard’s real gift is that anyone who hears his songs recognizes the truth in them. When a Merle Haggard song plays, it can make an innocent-as-apple-pie grandma understand the stark loneliness and self-loathing of a prisoner on death row; a rich kid who never wanted for any material possession get a feel for the pain of wondering where the next meal will come from; a tee-totaling pillar of the community sympathize with the poor heartbroken guy downing shots at the local bar. As a result, Haggard found his songs at the top of the charts on a regular basis. Immediately embraced by country fans, he also earned the respect of his peers. In addition to 40 #1 hits, Haggard charted scores of Top Ten songs. He won just about every music award imaginable, both as a performer and as a songwriter, and in 1994 was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. His body of work easily places him beside Hank Williams as one of the most influential artists in country music. That’s quite an accomplishment for the boy who was once officially branded “incorrigible.”

INTERVIEWS IN THE MUSIC COMMUNITY WITH TODD RYKACZEWSKI

Interview with Mike Bernos

FROM MONDO MIKE AND THE PO BOYS WITH SPICE

“I grew up with New Orleans R&B and I find I often write in a 12/8 time, which requires the song to be sung behind the beat, giving it the emotional power of a testimonial.” –Mike Bernos

BUZZ: How do you describe your music to people? MB: Mondo Mike and the Po Boys is really a showcase for the incredible vocals of our lead singer, Spice. She takes the songs and turns them into a tour-de-force blend of gospel and blues that comes out being a form of blues rock. I don’t try to be a funky band. There are plenty excellent groups in town that can handle that, the Parker Urban Band and Stanksauce to name a few. BUZZ: Do you write your own songs? MB: I write all the songs for the band and consider my songs to be lyrically driven. All of them are vignettes of metaphorical expression. I start with an idea that inspires me or one I am interested in exploring. The music, often in a 12/8 time, becomes the structure for expression. “Love in the Blind,” “Once Twice Baby Good Night,” and “Soul to Soul” are good examples. “Soul to Soul” is dedicated to the passage of HRO in Jacksonville. You can hear all the songs at Reverbnation or Soundcloud. Read the entire interview at iwantabuzz.com MondoMikeAndThePoBoys.com

Interview with George Veech FROM STRANGLED DARLINGS

“Thoughts and beliefs are as real as a new Lexus or a Happy Meal - sort of.” –George Veech

BUZZ: What do you think of music games like Singstar or Guitar Hero? GV: They are too easy to mock. Anything that brings some degree of composed/intentional music into

the house of people can’t be that bad. Besides, I feel bad for Journey (and their fat cat execs) because of all those royalty checks they never got, thanks to those pesky pirates ripping CD’s like a kid under a Christmas tree. Shockingly, I suck at those music games.

BUZZ: What is your musical discovery this year? GV: That’s a tie. Courtney Barnett (she does that Cole Porter thing by singing her words off-kilter

rhythmically but dry as a bone like Kurt Cobain without the distortion) and Phosphorescent (kicks beats phat as Sumo wrestling, lyrics dark and muscular like a Burmese python on the hunt for pets in South Florida). If you listen real careful, you can hear how we totally stole their stuff & put it on Boom Stomp King.

BUZZ: What image do you think your music conveys? GV: Objects versus Death. There is a fight going on between our corporal selves and the thoughts we have and can exchange between other selves. You visit, say, Jerusalem or the sidewalk where the cops shot Michael Brown and you might feel the stones or the concrete emanating something to you – but only as long as humans repeat the story. Fabricating meaning from physical objects tends to be our preference as tool makers. Otherwise, you’re just left with stuff like the Grand Canyon or the Everglades, which is harder to claim agency is making powerful. Oh, and then there’s music. GAME FACE

BRENT MARTINEAU

Local Athletes of Jacksonville Dallas Moore

Sports Director at

UNF Basketball<Point Guard

The UNF Ospreys sophomore point guard is the reigning Freshman of the Year in the Atlantic Sun. The St. Petersburg player is a special talent and leads an Ospreys team that is picked to finish 2nd in the conference this season. Moore scored 27 points in a game at Indiana last year. He started all 32 games and averaged almost 30 minutes per game.

J.R. Holder

JU Basketball<Forward

The Jacksonville University sophomore guard is one of two returning players on the entire Dolphins basketball roster. Holder played in all 30 games a season ago and averaged 7 points per game. JU is in the middle of a rebuild, but Holder decided to stay and be a part of that. The guard had 18 points in the second half alone in a game against Stetson last year.

Demetrius Mccray

Jaguars<Cornerback

The Jacksonville Jaguars second-year cornerback is starting to open some eyes in the Jags secondary. McCray was inserted into the starting lineup due to injuries and has played very well. The 7th round draft pick out of Appalachian State is part of a young secondary for the Jags. McCray is yet to record his first career interception.

Dorian Finney-Smith

Gators<Forward

The Florida Gators will look to go back to another Final Four in March, but they will do it with a new-look team. Dorian Finney-Smith is a familiar face and this year will be asked to be a scoring leader. The 2014 SEC Sixth Man of the Year was fantastic during the Gators tournament run. He has a career high of 22 points. Finney-Smith started his career at Virginia Tech before transferring to Florida.

THE PLAY BY PLAY

WITH COLE PEPPER

MATT BAHNER

Defender for Armada

The Jacksonville Armada begins play in the North American Soccer League this spring (the preseason opener is February 7 at EverBank Field vs. the Philadelphia Union of the MLS). Among the first batch of signees is defender Matt Bahner (pronounced BAYner). Bahner figures to compete for a starting spot. At the age of 24, he’ll be one of the younger guys on the squad, but he also has recovered well from knee surgery in 2011. The BUZZ spoke with Bahner as the inaugural season for the Armada approaches.

BUZZ: You last played for Harrisburg in the USL. From a player’s perspective, what do you expect from the NASL in terms of quality of play? MB: It will definitely be a step up from the USL. The NASL always tries to rival the MLS with the players and the quality and that’s what I expect. BUZZ: Why Jacksonville? MB: I came down here for a trial for a few days and I was blown away by the class of the organization from top to bottom. The excitement surrounding the team is something that you want to be a part of as a player. Also, the expectation is high, which is great for a new team. BUZZ: How did you fall in love with soccer? MB: Growing up, I played basketball, baseball and soccer. Soccer didn’t really stand out until I was 12 or 13

and my coaches started saying that I had the potential to do something with it. Baseball was too slow for me. I transitioned into soccer, I was succeeding and it just rolled into now. BUZZ: It’s been amazing how much the awareness of soccer has increased in this country, hasn’t it? MB: The World Cup and how well the U.S. did certainly helps that. I grew up before the soccer academies really came up. Now, that’s really the best way to develop your game. BUZZ: What has practice been like with the other members of the Armada? MB: I’m feeling comfortable with the system. One of my new teammates, Shawn Nicklaw, and I played against each other in college, but we didn’t realize it!

SPORTS BUZZ

FEATURED SPORTS BLOGGER by Jepp Walter, Fish On!

MOTHER NATURE DOESN’T MESS AROUND I’ve seen the ocean calm, so calm you’d call it slick. Usually when it’s like that, the fish don’t bite, so as beautiful as it may be, it’s a one-sided deal. Unfortunately, sometimes a severe thunderstorm DOES make it to the ocean and shows no signs of letting up. I’ve seen many, many instances of very rough seas that would make a lot of people vow to not go offshore again. But I started at such a young age, you could say I’m somewhat used to it. That doesn’t mean I don’t worry about it, but I’ve been trained for so many years, I just know what to do to survive when the Atlantic Ocean shows its fury. And it can – with a vengeance. Case in point: one of my best friends, Jimmy, got a 25-foot Chriscraft boat with a walk around cabin. A VERY nice boat, and plenty big enough for most instances one would be going offshore fishing, as long as you have a decent forecast. We were 24 miles offshore, northeast of the mouth of the St. Johns River at Mayport. It was a smooth ride; we were about halfway in when I saw it. The sky in front of us, between our vessel and the safety of the boat ramp, was dark. It wasn’t just black, like you’ve seen many times. It was one of those uglier dark skies, with hues of green and purple in it. Bummer – we were going to have to go through it. When we were about 8 miles offshore, the moment arrived. The wind started picking up very quickly. The temperature dropped about 15-20 degrees in a 60-second period. It was now cold. The seas, previously 2 to 3 feet all day, jumped up to 6 to 8 feet in about 2 minutes. One saving grace was that it was coming directly from the southwest, which was exactly where we needed to head. When you have severe winds, your best bet is to always point the bow (front of the boat) directly into the oncoming waves. We dropped from running 25 knots to pushing over and through the waves at a pace of 2 to 3 knots – just enough to keep the bow pointed the way it needed to be. Three of the 5 men aboard went down into the cabin to escape the wrath of the storm. Jimmy stayed on top, next to me. After some time had passed, so did the storm. The sky started to break up west of us. The sun started to peek through; the seas started to lay down. At this point, we were still 5 miles offshore. We had travelled through a severe thunderstorm on the open seas. What seemed like an eternity boiled down to only three miles of travel over about 40 minutes. But make it through it, we did. We got to pick up speed again and got to the dock in short order. Everyone was happy to be on dry land.

Saving Lives: New AED Borrow Program Announced WHAT IS AN AED AND WHAT IS ITS PURPOSE? An AED or Automated Electronic Defibrillator is a special portable computer designed to deliver a life-saving shock when needed to someone suffering cardiac arrest. These are manufactured for lay individuals to use in conjunction with CPR. WHY WAS THIS PROGRAM CREATED? The AED Borrow Program was created after the sudden collapse and death of 15-yearold baseball player Andrew Cohn of St. Mary’s, Ga. Since his passing, his family has been very engaged in making sure other families do not have to suffer the loss of a loved one because an AED is not accessible. Travel teams, church groups, Boy/ Girl Scouts and any people that may gather can now borrow the devices at no cost. Andrew Cohn’s parents, Becky and Harold Cohn, are founders of the AED Alliance. Mrs. Cohn said, “Very simply, the mission of the AED Alliance’s Public Borrow Program is to make AEDs publicly accessible for bystander usage. If an AED was available at the time of Andrew’s accident rather than locked in a building nearby, he might still be here today.” The Public Borrow Program, now active in four other states, will now include five counties in Northeast Florida. WHERE CAN I LEARN MORE ABOUT OBTAINING AN AED FOR MY EVENT OR GROUP? Currently, The Jacksonville Sports Medicine Program has distributed nine AEDs through eight organizations spread throughout Northeast Florida. They include Heartland Rehabilitation, Cora Rehabilitation, Progressive Step Physical Therapy, Atlantic Coast Physical Therapy, Preferred Physical Therapy, Select Physical Therapy, Baker County EMS, and St. Johns County Fire and Rescue. WHAT DO I NEED TO BORROW AN AED? To borrow an AED from a participating provider, a user must be certified in CPR, complete an AED Borrow Program application and provide a copy of a driver’s license and valid CPR card. Unfortunately, several weeks after this program was announced, Harold Cohn suddenly passed away. In his honor, to help continue this program, community organizations have donated an additional six AED’s to be distributed. If you are interested in learning more about the AED Alliance or to donate to their cause, contact Bob Sefcik at the Jacksonville Sports Medicine Program at (904) 202-4332. Jim Mackie, M.Ed., ATC, LAT, serves as Program Coordinator for the Jacksonville Sports Medicine Program and is a certified athletic trainer. The ocean is one of the most beautiful sights in the world; one that I will never grow tired of seeing. But I will always respect weather forecasts, and more importantly, I will ALWAYS respect Mother Nature. Her occasional angry wrath is not to be taken lightly and is not a training ground for the inexperienced boater. It’s not a fun place to be for the rest of us, either. If you want to control who gets what after you’re gone, then yes, you need an estate plan, either a will or a living trust. This is especially important if you have a blended family or non-spouse partner. A comprehensive estate plan can also name trusted people to take care of you, your finances, and your children if something happens to you and you become disabled during your lifetime. Proper planning now can prevent stress and expensive, time-consuming litigation later.

Lights, Camera, Jacksonville! By Kristen Sell

I’m a member of the sandwich generation: what should i ask my parents/grandparents about their estate plan?

DID YOU KNOW

If you are both raising children and caring for elderly parents or grandparents, it is important to know about any kind of will, trust, power of attorney or advance health directives in place—and to talk frankly about them. If there are documents, ask when they were last updated. Old, out-of-date documents can lead to nasty surprises. Estate planning documents should be updated regularly to keep up with both life changes and changes in the law. Did you know that Jacksonville was marketed as the “Winter Film Capital of the World” in the early 1900s? Kalem Pictures moved its offseason production operations to Jacksonville to escape the frigid New York winters. At the time, the city had more than 30 studios. Oliver Hardy made his debut film in the River City in 1913, titled “Outwitting Daddy.” IN RECENT YEARS In 2013, part of the feature film “Draft Day,” starring Kevin Costner, filmed a few scenes in Jacksonville featuring EverBank Field. The crew shot exterior establishing shots outside the stadium. “Draft Day” explores the complexities of the NFL Draft, and also features Jennifer Garner, Dennis Leary and Ellen Burstyn in supporting roles.

Nightlife I love spicy foods. This Abita Mardi Gras Bock Chili is no exception. I love spicy to the point that I will continue to eat something that tastes amazing, even if I feel like I’m going to combust (shout out to my sister, Sara, who makes the BEST, very spicy, enchiladas). How do you help that burn? Well, I’ve By Henriettibles.com got a fantastic surprise for you! Abita’s Mardi Gras Bock will actually help soothe that burn. Really! So, I thought I should come up with a recipe that not only highlights the flavor of this bock, but can also show off its soothing abilities (bonus: it has a high alcohol content!). Abita Mardi Gras Bock Chili was born. This bock is full bodied, with hints of caramel, pepper and toasted bread–more than capable of melding with the beef and spice of the chili. Take advantage of the cool weather; sit down next to a fire with a bottle of Abita’s Mardi Gras Bock, this chili and create some memories!

THE

COFFEE BARD Interview by Monica Stouder & Photos by Monica Lea Imagery Monicalea.com

What is unique about The Coffee Bard?

What is your funniest customer story?

INGREDIENTS

The stories. The Coffee Bard is about family, really, but it needs to be loved by more than just me. That’s why I support local artists and writers who enjoy a good cup of coffee, as well as those that are willing to hear me rant about the journey of a bard named Hessic (my mascot, if you will).

2 Tbsp. grapeseed oil

What kind of weekly drink specials do you offer?

2 lbs. chuck roast, cut into bite size cubes

Bard Tales – drinks that you leave up to the barkeep. I say barkeep because I was a bartender in Philly, so my “baristas” are known as barkeeps. We come up with whatever we want, really. Treat it like a random drink selection switch that you use when you cannot come up with a drink. We generally learn what you do not like, or are allergic to, and then we make your drink. No two Bard Tales are alike, so be sure to ask what we did afterward if you want it again in the future.

I had a customer come up to the counter and ask for a medium with room for coffee, so I gave her an empty cup with a lid on it. She got to the creamer station before she realized she had an empty cup. I often have fun with the folks I know before they have had their coffee, but this one was a newbie and I didn’t hold back. I treat them like family from the minute I say, ‘Welcome to the Bard.’

ABITA MARDI GRAS BOCK CHILI

1 ½ cups chopped onion ½ cup chopped shallots 1 clove minced garlic 16 oz. beef broth 12 oz. Abita’s Mardi Gras Bock

Tell us about your best-selling drink.

8 oz. tomato paste 2 Tbsp. ground cayenne pepper (add more/ less to taste)

I’d say it has to be a toss up between our redneck mocha and a blue lightning.

DIRECTIONS

In stock pot, heat oil over med-high heat. Add beef and brown all sides. Add onions and shallots, cooking until translucent. Add minced garlic. Cook for 90 seconds. Add remaining ingredients, except beans. Bring to boil. Reduce to low and simmer for 2 hours. Add beans and simmer another 20 minutes. Serve with sour cream & shredded cheddar cheese, if desired. Party like it’s Mardi Gras!

1 tsp. granulated garlic 1 ½ dried oregano ½ tsp. ground cumin 1 tsp. kosher salt 2 cans black beans, rinsed & drained

Do you have music or any kind of events or gatherings? We have the Jacksonville K-Pop Minion Meet-up every Friday. It’s called the K-Pop Power Hour. We also have an RPG Gamers Meeting a local knitting group that meet on Wednesdays and Fridays. I’m looking forward to our newest event in the works: trivi-oake. It is trivia and karaoke. Messing up on a trivia question could land you in the middle of the room with a microphone and a randomly chosen song if you fail a second time. Have any local Jax celebs stopped by for a drink or bag of beans?

What was the last big change you made to your drink menu? The specialty drink menu. I have added The Glass Dragon, The Mudslide, Mayan Mocha, Snakebite Cognac and Blue Lightning. What do you want more people to know about your business? I want them to know that there is a better option in Jacksonville for coffee and it is not another corporate chain. I want them to know that there is a great cup of coffee out there without a $5 tag attached to it; that regular sizes small, medium and large are still available in the locally owned business and the most you’ll pay for a large drip coffee is $2. I want them to know that the Coffee Bard New World Coffeehouse is Jacksonville’s best kept secret and I no longer want to keep it a secret.

Brew Time By Marc Wisdom Last month we focused on winter warmers and Christmas ales. This month, we will turn our eye to barleywines. The term barleywine is said to have been coined by the Bass Brewing Company of England as a marketing term to describe Bass #1 in 1903. However, the style has been around much longer and the term was used to describe the beer nearly two hundred years earlier. The style is characterized by alcohol levels in excess of 8% and as high as 12%. British barlywine are typically very malty with a healthy portion of hops for balance. American versions, while still quite malty, tend to be very big with citrusy hops. These brews often mellow in character and become even more splendid as they age. Barley wine is a hold-over of ancient strong ales, but more recently of English partigyle brewing that was employed through the 19th century. Parti-gyle is a method whereby successive runnings from the grist are made into separate beers, with the initial one being the strongest. This hodgepodge of beers had an assortment of names, with the strongest going by names such as stock (for blending), old (well-aged) or strong ale. The brews became known as barleywine and malt wine as long ago as the 18th century when brewers began trying to gain favor with wine drinkers. The name was meant to hint at the strength, nutrition and quality of the beer in relation to the similar qualities of wine made from grapes. As brewing techniques became more refined in the early 19th century, brewers moved away from re-using grist to single-purpose

NIGHTLIFE EVENTS

grist. While strong beers were included in most brewer’s portfolios, pale ales and bitters became the most common beers produced. Barley wines moved from the limelight to becoming stronger versions of the brewer’s more popular ales. Both London and Burton became famous for their pale ales, but strong brews such as barleywines and Burton ales were also notable. Burton ales were more heavily-hopped, less malty and almost always dry-hopped. London’s strong ales were less hoppy, more malty and rarely dry-hopped. Because of their higher alcohol content, barleywines are often vintage-dated. Savvy beer-lovers often purchase several bottles with the intention of laying one, or several, down for aging. With age, barleywines can develop more complex flavors as the hops mellow and the malts deepen.

Sierra Nevada Bigfoot weighs in at 9.6% ABV and features bold bittersweet malts and aggressive hop flavors from whole-cone Pacific Northwest hops. First introduced in the winter of 1983, Bigfoot is a cult classic - a strong, robust, bruiser of a beer with the refined intensity of a wine. Bigfoot is prized by beer collectors for its supreme cellarability. Under the proper conditions, it can age like a fine wine, developing new flavors and character as it matures in the bottle. Each new release or “expedition,” is vintage dated. Collect your own and see the flavors develop and progress. Marc Wisdom has searched the world over for classic barleywines and can often be found in his beer cellar chanting, “My precious,” while cradling a bottle of his prized barleywines. Raging Blonde is one of first brews that Veterans United released during their opening in August. Raging Blonde is an easy-to-drink ale that’s light in color but doesn’t skimp on the flavor. It’s maltforward and doughy with a crisp finish and just a touch of hop bitterness. Raging Blonde is everything a lighter beer should be, and one you can share with your non-craft-beer-drinking friends. The best part: it’s only $2.50 during happy hour at The Blind Rabbit! PROFESSOR DUBIOUS IS THE MOST KNOWLEDGEABLE PERSON IN THE WORLD BY A LARGE MARGIN. HERE, HE DEIGNS TO RESPOND TO YOUR ILL-INFORMED QUERIES. Can the inhabitants of other planets watch earth TV broadcasts? - H. Milo, San Francisco, CA

Professor Dubious Says: It is doubtful that extraterrestrial

creatures, if they exist, have watched TV broadcasts from Earth. At least they haven’t watched them all the way through.

The nearest planetary system that is believed to be capable of supporting life is Beta Arachna, 43 light years distant from the Earth. Thus, creatures there would just now be receiving Earth transmissions from the 1960s and 70s. This means “The Partridge Family,” “Gomer Pyle,” “My Favorite Martian,” and “Lassie” episodes featuring the fourth and worst Lassie. Any civilization sophisticated enough to build a television receiver is unlikely to have any interest in this kind of claptrap. Most scientists believe that until extraterrestrials begin to receive the second season of “Knight Rider,” there will be little or no observation of our television signals.

Is your basement the best place to be in the event of nuclear attack? - S. Suzanne, San Diego, CA

Professor Dubious Says: No, my basement is

actually one of the worst places to be in the event of a nuclear attack. For one, there’s nothing to do there. I don’t have any books or board games or knitting yarn down there and though there’s an old 13” black and white TV, the reception is lousy. There are a lot of ants and beetles and there’s a funny smell that’s sort of like raw-egg-flavored cotton candy. Also, I’m pretty sure a squirrel died down there somewhere, but I’ve never found him. You’d probably be happier hanging out in my kitchen.

January CROSSWORD Horoscope

the BUZZed MAZE Test Your Skills. We Dare Ya!

Written by Kyle, Astrologer Extraordinaire

Aries (March 21- April 19)

You’re stuck in the middle of an awkward situation. The stars see a close friend making an attempt on you this month, but it’s one of those people who are “just a friend” for a reason, if you catch my drift. Everyone is joining gyms this month; maybe you can convince them to also and see what happens.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20)

For the first time in a long time, you’ll be moving into the New Year with the planet of love in your relationship sector. Thus, don’t mess up this opportunity to find love. Remember how the past few years were… not great.

Gemini (May 21 – June 21)

Your wanderlust is highly active this January, so naturally you are out looking for new flings. What a great way to start the New Year. Diet? Nah. Exercise? Heck no. Random, spontaneous nights with new people? Oh, yeah!

Cancer (June 22 – July 22)

Tensions could have you wanting to reignite with an old flame after the holidays. Is this really the road you want to venture down? I’m guessing no. ‘Ex’ is not short for excellent. People don’t go into the New Year turning over the same, old, nasty, conceited, hard-headed leaf, do they?

Leo (July 23 – August 22)

Not looking too good there, Leo. This month is busier at the office instead of the bedroom. Stressful Mars enters Capricorn, your sixth house of work and health. I’m not a real expert with this stuff (shocker, I know), but none of that last sentence mentions romance, love, fun, good times, etc.

Virgo (August 23 – September 22)

According to my online competition, this is what they said: “You are feeling somewhat more thoughtful than usual, which is really saying something!” According to them, you’re usually a jerk, but not this month. Maybe being nice will work out for you in the romance department.

Snap a photo of your completed puzzle and email it to BUZZMagazine@iwantaBUZZ.com for a chance to win a great prize!

Libra (September 23 – October 22)

With Mars in Aquarius, your raciest, bawdiest urges are coming to the forefront. So you might as well indulge them, right? You wouldn’t want to waste and ignore those urges. Isn’t that was causes weight gain? No, eating a bucket of ice cream does.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

Caution, rough road ahead! Things are not looking good for you, Scorpio. You and your mate are swirling up a whole lot of, “No, you’re the issue!” Nothing like starting the New Year with the ol’ ball and chain griping in your ear. Time to go into avoidance mode.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)

With some planetary alignments this month, your online dating is in the heat zone. Get your Tinder thumb ready to go! This could be one of those months you brag about in years to come. It could also be one of the months where you now have routine visits to your doctor. Regardless, it sounds unforgettable.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)

Outspoken Uranus returns this month, helping you confront matters head-on. No more dancing around issues. It’s time you go and tell that crush of yours how you feel. They won’t be guessing the shy, awkward one is really into them. At worst, they will only have to say “No” to you once.

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)

Ouch. Love planet Venus is in Scorpio, your tenth house of long-term goals. Uh-oh, long-term. Your spontaneous nature doesn’t allow for “grown-up” standards like that. I recommend to you not to freak out, but honestly you should a little. All those fun times are now a thing of your past.

Pisces (February 19 – March 20)

It’s time to be bold and romantic. Might as well take a chance… it’s a new year! Can’t get any worse, right? Get your online profile up to what you wish you were. Everyone else is lying online; you might as well try to keep pace.
