My most anticipated event for 2017 is ExZOOberation at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens on April 8. ExZOOberation is a great fundraiser for our amazing zoo. It includes specialty drinks, dinner, live music and an auction where you can bid on naming rights for baby animals, along with exclusive packages for behind-the-scenes experiences. I am co-chairing the 2017 event, and we are bringing the focus to the Zoo’s local, regional and global conservation efforts. This year is ExZOOberation’s 22nd year, and we’re hoping it will be the best one yet!

We appreciate the tremendous support we received for our Fries With That Wine event. The event would not have been possible without all of our sponsors, including our presenting sponsor, EverBank and dozens of dedicated volunteers. The money raised from Fries With That Wine will help us continue our very important mission of providing vital services to families whose children are receiving world-class pediatric care in Jacksonville. Fries With That Wine 2017 will take place in the newly renovated US Assure Club East at EverBank Field. Voted as the 2015 Bold City Best Local Charity Event, you will not want to miss one of Jacksonville’s best parties with a purpose.

The Civic Orchestra of Jacksonville will perform a season finale concert on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at 5 p.m. at St. John’s Cathedral in downtown Jacksonville. It’s free and open to the entire community. Following the concert, audience members are invited to celebrate with the musicians during a champagne reception. After graduating from UNF on scholarship, Odd Rod has built a growing reputation, touring the region as a multi-media artist, performing compelling one-man shows that are a combination of music, spoken word, poetry, even dance. Area of Law Criminal Defense How long have you practiced? 13 and a half years.

BUZZ: How do you set yourself apart from other firms in the area? We are extremely personable with our clients, taking a lot of time to deal with their issues directly. We make ourselves available to our clients at all hours, especially for emergencies. Also, one of the niche things that we do is that we offer flat fee agreements. BUZZ: What are flat fee agreements? It’s a set price for your legal work instead of paying an hourly rate, because I want to be your attorney and not your banker. BUZZ: What do you see as the greatest challenges in your practice? Coming to terms with the fact that in a family law situation, no one really wins, so you have to base your strategy on what works best for the children, regardless of how it may impact the parents. BUZZ: Our readers want to know what’s a law many people break unknowingly? That you’re not allowed to drive with your hazards on in the rain. BUZZ: Our readers want to know what should you do if you need to adjust your child support payments? How did you choose your particular field of law? I was in law school and clerked for big firms. I started interviewing for prosecutor jobs. Then I came here and it just clicked. Once you learn criminal law from the State’s Attorney’s Office side, it’s easy on the defense side. How do you stay connected in the community? What brought you to Jacksonville? I’m a Jacksonville native.

Where did you attend law school? University of Georgia School of Law.

What is your specific field of law?

The DeVries Law Firm, P.A.

Law Offices of James D. Allen

They receive personal, one-onone contact with an attorney as opposed to going through a bunch of office staff.

They benefit from my past business experience, my knowledge as a CFO and my finance degree from JU.

The firm’s is personal injury, but I’m more geared towards wills and trusts, probate, international trade and maritime law.

How do clients benefit from your services?

The big thing that differentiates us from other firms is that there is no claim too small. We’ll put the effort into all cases for every client.

How did you choose your particular field of law?

I was trained in a different field, but as I was looking for a firm to work for, I met Scott Nooney and Michael Roberts and discussed the opportunity. This was a chance to get practical experience in a high demand field. It’s been very different than what I trained for, but very good as well.

What are some challenges you like to overcome in your business?

What sticks out to me is trying to communicate to clients just how we’re navigating the process. We try to be a partner to them in this situation.

How do you stay connected to the Jacksonville community?

POLICY TIPS & TRICKS

LAW SPOTLIGHT

Jason A. Burgess Law Offices of Jason A. Burgess, LLC At Burgess Law we concentrate on complex bankruptcy cases. For more information, call (904) 3724791 or visit Chapter11Jax.com.

What is a Chapter 7 bankruptcy? A way for individuals to get a fresh start. When you file, some of your assets and all of your debts are put in the control of a neutral third party called a trustee. It is the trustee’s job to sell assets and then distribute the money from the sale to creditors in an orderly fashion. Many Chapter 7 bankruptcy clients never lose a single asset and instead are discharged from their debts for only the cost of the bankruptcy case. Each case is unique and needs to be approached that way. It is very important to be honest with your attorney when deciding whether or not to file. The more you disclose to your potential attorney, the better advice you can receive and hopefully your losses, if any, can be minimized. Do businesses have bankruptcy options as well? Businesses can file for Chapter 7 liquidation as well as Chapter 11 reorganization. Leonard Alterman 4035 Atlantic Blvd. (904) 739-3440 AltermanLawyer.com What brought you to Jacksonville?

I grew up in Palatka, so Jacksonville was the big city to come to for me. I interviewed with various firms here once I finished law school at UF and found one I liked.

What is your specific field of law?

Primarily business law, but I also handle probate, wills and estate planning.

How long have you practiced? 48 years.

How do clients benefit from your services?

My experience, first and foremost. I also make a point of being prompt when returning phone calls and expediting cases.

How do you stay connected to the Jacksonville community? Are you involved in any local organizations? I’m a part of the Small Business Resource Network, a member of the Jewish Reform Temple and a past board member of Children’s Home Society. I also perform in local theatrical productions and play the clarinet, flute and saxophone in one orchestra and two concert bands.

The Bulger Firm, PLLC 2120 Corporate Square Blvd., Suite 17 Jacksonville, FL 32216 (904) 608-3694 | TheBulgerFirm.com Holidays Without Headaches

While this is a time of celebration and joy, for many families, it can also bring its share of headaches. Scheduling holiday time is challenging in its own right, but for parents who share holiday time under a custody arrangement, it can seem impossible to celebrate without conflict. Here are some strategies for enjoying the holidays with as little stress as possible:

1. Set a Schedule

Most school districts send out their holiday calendars at the beginning of each school year. Make sure that you and your child’s parent each have a copy well in advance to allow ample time for planning. Consult with your former spouse as to their schedule, and be clear as to locations, times and expectations as to how you’ll be splitting the time, so everyone can plan accordingly.

2. Make New Traditions

Dividing holiday time may mean you’ll have to change the way you celebrated holidays in the past. Use this as an opportunity to create new traditions with your child. These new traditions will be special memories and will ease the transition from your old life into your new one.

3. Practice Kindness

We tend to feel more cheerful and generous during the holidays, so be sure to extend some of that to your ex. A little gesture can go a very long way toward keeping the peace, and something as simple as picking up a small gift for them may set a much brighter tone for you both.

4. Communicate

The holidays bring a flurry of activities and events, so be sure to keep your child’s parent informed as to any special happenings at your child’s school or church.

5. Remember the Reason

The holidays are not a time to compete with your ex or settle old scores. Forgive, forget and focus on the joy of the season and remember that this is a magical time for your child. Be mindful of the things that make this time of year so special and you’ll find that everyone has a much happier holiday. The Bulger Firm wishes the happiest of holidays to you and yours. If you have questions on co-parenting and divorce, please call for a consultation. Ed Malesky explained his artistic process and what he hopes viewers get from his pieces.

Ed Malesky TurningArtsGroup.com

Ed Malesky has been a full-time woodturner for the last twelve years, and has both taught and demonstrated near his home in North Florida, focusing on helping people learn the basics and get excited about woodturning. Malesky loves turning local woods into beautiful art. While his focus is on creating pleasing sculptural forms and traditional woodturned pieces, he also delights in adding textures and colors to evoke an emotional response from the viewers. Malesky served as the President of the Northeast Florida Woodturners Association for many years and is a founding member of the Turning Arts Group. He also serves on the Board of The Art Center, is Chairman of the Florida Woodturning Symposium and a member of the Northeast Florida Sculptors. He has taught woodturning at the John C. Campbell Folkschool in North Carolina and has been teaching students at the Safe Harbor Boys Home for the last five years.

“I’ve always been interested in woodworking and started by creating furniture and projects for the home,” said Malesky. “Fifteen years ago, I made a shift from ‘flatwork’ to working with a lathe and loved it. I use native Florida woods to create my work. This is not a problem however, since Florida has some of the best woods in the U.S. for turning. Turning wood into these forms is a truly tactile and very enjoyable experience, complicated by the fact that wood is an organic material that moves and distorts as it dries or contains hidden defects. Sometimes I can use these features and sometimes I need to plan ahead to get the form I want. A beautiful form can be enough, especially when I have used a spectacular piece of wood. However, my real goal is to draw an emotional response from the viewer, so often this initial form is just the canvas for my work. I love adding color and texture to my pieces using dyes, paints, pyrography and other processes to allow the viewer to see something beyond just a piece of wood.”

NORMAN STUDIOS DESIGNATED AS A NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK Home to more than 30 film studios in 1916, Jacksonville was known as the “Winter Film Capital” of the world in the early film era. In 1920, the Norman Studios Silent Film Company began producing films for an African-American audience, featuring black actors playing positive roles that challenged stereotypes of that time period. Norman Studios is now being recognized as a new national historic landmark. Norman Studios Silent Film Company produced “race films” made for black audiences, spotlighting black actors in professional roles including business leaders, war heroes and agents for change. Contrasting mainstream portrayals of black actors, Norman Studios represented a turning point for African-Americans in the film industry. Norman Studios is the only preserved film studio in the United States that produced silent films starring black actors. As Norman Studios achieves national historic landmark status, it will become a center for tourism, film education and research.

“Men are from Mars – Women are from Venus, Live” is the one-man fusion of theatre and stand-up starring Josh Hyman. Moving swiftly through a series of vignettes, the show covers everything from dating and marriage to the bedroom. “Men are from Mars – Women are from Venus, Live” is more than just the book. This hysterical show will have couples elbowing each other all evening as they see themselves on stage. Sexy and fast paced, this show is definitely for adults, but will leave audiences laughing and giggling like little kids! Since being published in 1992, John Gray’s “Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus,” exploring the differences between the sexes, has sold more than 50 million copies, been translated into 40 different languages and is one of the most recognizable titles in the world. Gray has written 17 books and become one of the most trusted relationship authors today, appearing on the national lecture circuit and on such TV shows as “Good Morning America” and “Larry King Live.” The show’s producer, St. Louis-based Emery Entertainment, has produced or promoted thousands of events around the globe, including superstar attractions Blue Man Group, David Copperfield and James Taylor. The talented team assembled for this production continues with the award-winning playwright Eric Coble, direction by Broadway veteran Mindy Cooper and animation and video production by the talented animators at Bazillion Productions. It’s a very personal music.” Rogers has played for millions of fans around the world, performing songs from his long list of hits including, “The Gambler,” “Lucille,” “Coward of the County,” “Lady,” “Islands in the Stream,” “She Believes In Me,” “We’ve Got Tonight,” “Daytime Friends,” “Through The Years,” “You Decorated My Life,” and “Buy Me A Rose.” “It’s been an interesting career to say the least,” said Rogers. “The places I’ve been allowed to go to, the people I’ve been allowed to sing for and the responses have really been wonderful.” Rogers received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Country Music Association. In addition, he is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and holds three Grammy Awards and numerous American Music Awards. He enjoyed a brief stint as an actor in “The Gambler,” personifying his larger than life song. Rogers, now 78, is retiring after his 2017 final tour. The center’s team of professionals offer individual and group counseling for issues like depression, anxiety, marital problems and have specialized services for rape victims. Miles said trauma related to sexual assault can be especially taxing on a person’s mental health because the crime is often kept hidden.

“It’s a community issue when you talk about sexual assault,” Miles said. “The issues of sexual violence are not limited to gender and not limited to economics. 1 in 5 women will face sexual assault in their lifetime.” Mental health challenges for adults who were child victims can be particularly daunting. “They are walking wounded,” Miles said. “There is still so much shame associated with sexual assault and they aren’t able to tell their story.”

Health Review: Men’s Health

HEALTH SPOTLIGHT

Luke Previte of Jacksonville enjoys a nutritious meal that includes healthy fats, protein and carbohydrates. Men should strive to include all three of these micronutrients in their meals.

Dr. Ali Kasraeian

Kasraeian Urology

BUZZ: What age can prostate cancer occur? DOC: Your risk of prostate cancer increases with age but it can occur in your 40s. I’ve treated as young as 38 at my office. BUZZ: What is a prostate cancer screening (PSA)? DOC: It consists of a blood test and digital rectal exam.

Best Nutrition for Men All men need three macronutrients in their diet to fuel their body and optimize their everyday performance, whether it is for a professional workday or a gym workout. So men should focus on getting a balance of these three macronutrients:

Samantha Pappas is a local registered dietitian, personal trainer and co-founder of Dietitians of Palm Valley. Pappas shared her expertise for the best nutrition for men.

Carbohydrates: Our body, and more importantly our brain, uses carbohydrates as its most preferred energy source. If we are lacking carbohydrates in our diet, we tend to feel fatigued. Try a bowl of Super Oats by Love Grown Foods, packed full with fiber and energy to start your day off right! Protein: Our muscles need protein after a hard workout to rebuild and grow stronger. Protein is also vital for regulating our blood sugar. Make sure to eat a protein source at every meal. Protein sources: eggs, peanut butter, nuts, seeds, beans, chicken, turkey, salmon, beef and pork.

Fat: Fat keeps you feeling full and satisfied throughout the day. Consuming low-fat diets can leave you feeling hungry and deprived. Eat food containing healthy fat sources like extra virgin olive oil, avocados, nuts, seeds and salmon.

BUZZ: What can men do to prevent prostate cancer from becoming life threatening? DOC: Talk to your doctor about getting your first PSA at 45 years old. Research has shown it is most predictive of your personal prostate cancer risk. BUZZ: How important is early detection? DOC: Early detection is key because our management is most successful when the cancer is confined to the prostate. BUZZ: What can friends and family do to support prevention of prostate cancer? DOC: Encourage the men in their life just to go to their doctor for general health and encourage them to get the first screening in their 40s. It can save your life.

Mike Holmes Fit Club More than 13,000 men in Florida last year were diagnosed with prostate cancer and one in seven men in America will be diagnosed in their lifetime. However, Jacksonville native Mike Holmes is doing everything he can to make sure he and others are not one of them.

“It’s very important for anyone to be active,” said Holmes, who owns a personal training facility. Candidly, Holmes admits men are not his largest clientele. “It’s the ego and the pride of someone telling you how to work out, which men feel they know how to do on their own,” Holmes said. However, enlisting the support of a personal trainer can give men the much-needed accountability and expertise to succeed, Holmes said. Studies of exercise and prostate cancer risk have mostly shown that men who exercise may have a reduced risk of prostate cancer. Holmes, a former professional athlete, said he asks each new client the same questions to inspire achievement. “’What are you doing now? Do you have any goals? How are (you) reaching (your) goals?’”

I’m a huge supporter of the Donna Marathon – the Breast Cancer Marathon held in Jax Beach in February each year. I have personally run the marathon, and it means a lot to me. I’m a breast cancer survivor myself.

I am most looking forward to Boaters Skip Day, because it has become such a fun event. I love the idea, that people are “skipping,” and getting in a boat day during the week, complete with a band and lots of fun! It is great to see all the big “go fast” boats, rafted up together, they are amazing. The food is always great and how often do you get to swim up to a table to get your food?

CLIENT FOCUSED MEDIA VIDEO TEAM NAMED AS FINALISTS IN THE SLAMDANCE FILM COMPETITION

[

]

Client Focused Media and Buzz Media are proud to announce Mark Marlar and Joey Vokac have been selected as finalists for the Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. Marlar and Vokac make up the video team at the two entities and worked independently with two other filmmakers on a short film, which they submitted to the competition. Their film, a documentary titled “Mo’Freaka,” was picked for the finals and the team will be headed to Utah in January for the festival. Marlar, who is the video director at CFM, served as the producer and sound production manager for the project. Vokac, a videographer with CFM, was the director. Derek Fleming was the writer and editor, and Kyle Vaughn was the camera operator. The team had just five days to put together the film, which is a self-titled mockumentary featuring an aspiring hip-hop artist from Jacksonville. “Working on a five-day schedule forces you to be extremely creative and realistic,” said Marlar. “As a team, we really had to dial down the pre-production process to have enough time to shoot and edit the film. Above all, it can get very frustrating working on such a tight schedule, so constant communication as a team was key.” The story of “Mo’Freaka” follows the struggles of an up and coming musician. It shows how he deals with rejection from family, friends and society as he works through the daily grind of trying to make it as a hip-

hop artist. The film was chosen out of a group of thousands and will show with about 100 others at the film festival, which takes place simultaneous to the Sundance Film Festival in Park City.

“Being a finalist in a national competition really gave us the confidence we needed to move forward as filmmakers,” said Vokac. “Having credible sources judge your work can be tough, but now we know that we have what it takes to compete with a higher level of filmmakers.” The Slamdance Film Festival will be held January 20-26, 2017, in Park City, Utah. The festival was created in 1995 by filmmakers for filmmakers. The organization is focused on fostering the development of unique and innovative filmmakers. Up-and-coming writers, directors and producers will be showcasing their work alongside seasoned veterans of the industry.

Food Truck Foodies

EL AGAVE AZUL

by Shelton Buchanan

Good tacos are a thing of beauty. Great tacos, well, that’s just doing God’s work right there. Jacksonville has no shortage of taco joints, but truly amazing, authentic tacos are hard to come by unless you know where to look. I was fortunate enough to catch the El Agave Azul truck down at the Jax Food Truck Food Court and let me tell you, my life will never be the same again. I’ve made many trips south of the border in my lifetime and had yet to find any place here in Florida that could come close to the amazing tacos you can find at simple, roadside stands or taquerias. El Agave Azul is the exception to that. First, allow me to let you know that these are definitely not the dressed-up tacos you might find at spots on the Beaches. While those are delicious as well, these are elegant in their simplicity. For starters, the basic taco here is just their meat topped with a little cilantro and diced white onion, served on a fresh, corn tortilla. If you’re feeling the need for a little extra color on top, you can upgrade any of their options to a supreme with lettuce, tomato and sour cream for just a dollar more. Squeeze a little fresh lime on top, and you’re all set. The day I went, I opted for one chorizo and one pollo done in the regular style, along with an al pastor loaded up as a supreme. For those of you that aren’t familiar with those terms, chorizo is a slightly spicy sausage, pollo is chicken and al pastor is marinated pork. The al pastor was delicious, with a slightly stronger kick than I had expected, while the chicken was actually a little on the sweet side. The chorizo won me over by a landslide though. As I’ve said before, I’m a wuss when it comes to spicy foods, and their chorizo taco had just enough of a kick for me to feel it, but was the savoriest of the three tacos. So when you’re craving a truly authentic taco experience, give El Agave Azul a chance.

Moore released his fourth album “Kinda Don’t Care,” his third No. 1 debut on the Country charts, in August. The lead single from the album, the Top-5 and-rising “You Look Like I Need a Drink,” lines up right alongside his chart-topping Platinum and Gold-certified hits, “Small Town USA,” and “Lettin’ The Night Roll.” This also follows two Gold-certified albums: “Justin Moore” and “Outlaws Like Me.” Lee Brice is a multiple ACM and CMA award winner with a Grammy nomination, six RIAA platinum singles and more than 10 million singles sold, under his belt. The power vocalist, songwriter and producer has celebrated five No. 1 hits including, “I Drive Your Truck” and “Drinking Class.” He was most recently honored by the RIAA during a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden for the platinum certification of his No. 1 radio single, “I Don’t Dance.” He quickly followed that career milestone with performances on NBC’s “The Voice,” “Today,” and ABC’s “The Bachelor Live.” “It’s very exciting to get back out there as a headliner,” Justin says. “To be able to do it with my buddy Lee is even more exciting. JANUARY HOROSCOPE

Written by Kyle, Astrologer Extraordinaire

ARIES (March 21- April 19)

At the beginning of the New Year, you have a one-track mind, and it’s not bargain shopping. With Venus in your eighth house of intimacy, you and your mate or crush will want to stay home and spend more time behind closed shades.

TAURUS (April 20 – May 20)

You may be missing your companion this month. Instead of stressing over that, you should be out having fun of your own. Gather up your friends and make a night or two of it. Make him or her miss you even more.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)

Don’t get mixed signals while out on the dating scene this month. Crossed arms, wandering eyes, walking away to talk to other people, or leaving the bar with someone else are all tell-tale signs they are not into you. Remember that little tip.

CANCER (June 22 – July 22)

Here’s a New Years’ resolution for you Cancer. Quit thinking of asking him/ her out and just do it. Lord knows they aren’t going to ask you out. So, put one foot in front of the other, move that jaw of yours up and down and see what happens.

LEO (July 23 – August 22)

Competitive horoscope stated you should, “find out first if the feelings are mutual before blurting out your intentions with a crush.” Really? That’s too modest. Blurt out impulsively. Those are your real feelings, and we wouldn’t want to bottle them up.

VIRGO (August 23 – September 22)

Your upcoming plans you made with someone may have a minor setback: they don’t want to go. But don’t let that stop you. Keep calling and calling and calling. They’ll pick up eventually, right?

Libra (September 23 – October 22)

Your third house of close friendships (yeah, I can’t make this stuff up) is turning a buddy into a booty call for you single Libras. You can’t deny what nature is calling for, so start texting your good friends, and let the one night stands start.

SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21)

With Mars in Capricorn, your communication house, your bantering skills will be at an all-time high. This month will be full of playful teasing with anyone you desire. This will not get hot and steamy, but it probably is a better start than last year.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 21)

The beginning of 2017 isn’t going to start out with a bang for you Sagittarius. Love will feel like a complicated affair. So instead of disappointment, ignore that emotion all together and get lost in yourself. This should fit with your independence.

CAPRICORN (December 22 – January 19)

This online horoscope stated, “Time to cut your mate a break this month.” Now, I could agree you are no dream-machine, but it’s your birthday month. So, we will ignore that for now. Be unkind, and unwind.

AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18)

This is where I say a bunch of crap about you taking the first step in a relationship this month instead of trying to play it cool. To be honest, I really think you are just going to screw it up, so making any attempt is completely your call.

PISCES (February 19 – March 20)

By the stroke of some weird, uncanny planetary shifts, things this month are looking up for you Pisces. You stand at the intersection of adventure and love with green lights in all directions. Carpe Diem my friend.
