My most anticipated event for 2017 is ExZOOberation at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens on April 8. ExZOOberation is a great fundraiser for our amazing zoo. It includes specialty drinks, dinner, live music and an auction where you can bid on naming rights for baby animals, along with exclusive packages for behind-the-scenes experiences. I am co-chairing the 2017 event, and we are bringing the focus to the Zoo’s local, regional and global conservation efforts. This year is ExZOOberation’s 22nd year, and we’re hoping it will be the best one yet!

We have our annual showcase, “Extravaganza,” at the Moran Theater in February. The 31st annual showcase features some of the area’s most accomplished high school performers in dance, theater, vocals, instrumental music, film, visual arts and spoken word.

2017 is a big year for us at Angelwood as we get ready to launch our 25th anniversary campaign. It will kick off with our SilverCelebration 25th Anniversary party on January 19 from 6-9 p.m. Tickets are $25, which gets you in the door for all you can eat and drink. Grandpa’s Cough Medicine is on board to entertain our guests and we also have food/drink vendors like The Happy Grilled Cheese, MShack, Ancient City Brewing Co, Peterbrooke and more. Our most anticipated event of the year will be our 25th Anniversary Gala. This Gala will highlight Angelwood’s 25 years of service in our community. Many of our clients and their family members will be there and it will be a night for them to shine for sure! The Gala will be held on August 26 at the Sawgrass Marriott.

Mission House will be celebrating our 20th Anniversary in February of 2017. The celebration will include a community open house on February 25, 2017, from 2-5 p.m.

The Riverside Fine Arts Association will have Delfeayo Marsalis in concert on September 29, 2017. We originally had him scheduled last year; however, Hurricane Matthew got in the way so we had to postpone. Thank goodness we are able to bring him back for our 2017-18 season opener. It will be at the Church of the Good Shepherd in the main sanctuary and begins at 7:30.

The most anticipated event for 2017 at the Greater Jacksonville Area USO is our annual Operation: That’s My Dress. The exact date of this year’s show has yet to be determined but we expect the extravaganza to be in September again in 2017.

The American Cancer Society is hosting its 22nd annual Cowford Ball on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at 6 p.m. As a cancer survivor, I love that this event raises money to fund services for local people fighting cancer right here in Jacksonville! I was able to attend the event the past two years and was surprised by the detail that went into making this event truly one of a kind including the casino style games, culinary experience and entertainment that made the theme come alive. Dreams Come True is looking forward to our fourth annual Dream Day event on June 10 at PRI Productions. Dream Day is a special day when local children who are battling life-threatening illnesses take a momentary reprieve from all of their medical worries and receive a magical experience in a world of superheroes and princesses. The smiles and laughter created on that day bring joy to the hearts of all present, but especially to our community’s most deserving little heroes.

Odd Rod (aka Roderick Borisade) had a tough childhood growing up in Jacksonville, with a drug-addicted single mom and poverty as major obstacles to success. “I gave myself the name ‘Odd Rod’ because I beat the odds,” he told First Coast Connect listeners. After graduating from UNF on scholarship, Odd Rod has built a growing reputation, touring the region as a multi-media artist, performing compelling one-man shows that are a combination of music, spoken word, poetry, even dance. How did you choose your particular field of law? I was in law school and clerked for big firms. I started interviewing for prosecutor jobs. Then I came here and it just clicked. Once you learn criminal law from the State’s Attorney’s Office side, it’s easy on the defense side. How do you stay connected in the community? What is a Chapter 7 bankruptcy? A way for individuals to get a fresh start. When you file, some of your assets and all of your debts are put in the control of a neutral third party called a trustee. It is the trustee’s job to sell assets and then distribute the money from the sale to creditors in an orderly fashion. Many Chapter 7 bankruptcy clients never lose a single asset and instead are discharged from their debts for only the cost of the bankruptcy case. Each case is unique and needs to be approached that way. It is very important to be honest with your attorney when deciding whether or not to file. While this is a time of celebration and joy, for many families, it can also bring its share of headaches. Scheduling holiday time is challenging in its own right, but for parents who share holiday time under a custody arrangement, it can seem impossible to celebrate without conflict. Here are some strategies for enjoying the holidays with as little stress as possible:
1. Set a Schedule
Most school districts send out their holiday calendars at the beginning of each school year. Make sure that you and your child’s parent each have a copy well in advance to allow ample time for planning. Consult with your former spouse as to their schedule, and be clear as to locations, times and expectations as to how you’ll be splitting the time, so everyone can plan accordingly.
2. Make New Traditions
Dividing holiday time may mean you’ll have to change the way you celebrated holidays in the past. Use this as an opportunity to create new traditions with your child. These new traditions will be special memories and will ease the transition from your old life into your new one.
3. Practice Kindness
We tend to feel more cheerful and generous during the holidays, so be sure to extend some of that to your ex. A little gesture can go a very long way toward keeping the peace, and something as simple as picking up a small gift for them may set a much brighter tone for you both.
4. Communicate
The holidays bring a flurry of activities and events, so be sure to keep your child’s parent informed as to any special happenings at your child’s school or church.
5. Remember the Reason
The holidays are not a time to compete with your ex or settle old scores. Forgive, forget and focus on the joy of the season and remember that this is a magical time for your child. Ed Malesky has been a full-time woodturner for the last twelve years, and has both taught and demonstrated near his home in North Florida, focusing on helping people learn the basics and get excited about woodturning. Malesky loves turning local woods into beautiful art. While his focus is on creating pleasing sculptural forms and traditional woodturned pieces, he also delights in adding textures and colors to evoke an emotional response from the viewers. Malesky served as the President of the Northeast Florida Woodturners Association for many years and is a founding member of the Turning Arts Group. He also serves on the Board of The Art Center, is Chairman of the Florida Woodturning Symposium and a member of the Northeast Florida Sculptors. He has taught woodturning at the John C. Campbell Folkschool in North Carolina and has been teaching students at the Safe Harbor Boys Home for the last five years.
“I’ve always been interested in woodworking and started by creating furniture and projects for the home,” said Malesky. “Fifteen years ago, I made a shift from ‘flatwork’ to working with a lathe and loved it. I use native Florida woods to create my work. This is not a problem however, since Florida has some of the best woods in the U.S. for turning. Turning wood into these forms is a truly tactile and very enjoyable experience, complicated by the fact that wood is an organic material that moves and distorts as it dries or contains hidden defects. Sometimes I can use these features and sometimes I need to plan ahead to get the form I want. A beautiful form can be enough, especially when I have used a spectacular piece of wood. However, my real goal is to draw an emotional response from the viewer, so often this initial form is just the canvas for my work. I love adding color and texture to my pieces using dyes, paints, pyrography and other processes to allow the viewer to see something beyond just a piece of wood.”

NORMAN STUDIOS DESIGNATED AS A NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK Home to more than 30 film studios in 1916, Jacksonville was known as the “Winter Film Capital” of the world in the early film era. In 1920, the Norman Studios Silent Film Company began producing films for an African-American audience, featuring black actors playing positive roles that challenged stereotypes of that time period. Norman Studios is now being recognized as a new national historic landmark. Norman Studios Silent Film Company produced “race films” made for black audiences, spotlighting black actors in professional roles including business leaders, war heroes and agents for change. Contrasting mainstream portrayals of black actors, Norman Studios represented a turning point for African-Americans in the film industry. Norman Studios is the only preserved film studio in the United States that produced silent films starring black actors. As Norman Studios achieves national historic landmark status, it will become a center for tourism, film education and research.

In addition, he is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and holds three Grammy Awards and numerous American Music Awards. He enjoyed a brief stint as an actor in “The Gambler,” personifying his larger than life song. Rogers, now 78, is retiring after his 2017 final tour. Miles said trauma related to sexual assault can be especially taxing on a person’s mental health because the crime is often kept hidden.
“It’s a community issue when you talk about sexual assault,” Miles said. “The issues of sexual violence are not limited to gender and not limited to economics. 1 in 5 women will face sexual assault in their lifetime.” Mental health challenges for adults who were child victims can be particularly daunting. “They are walking wounded,” Miles said. “There is still so much shame associated with sexual assault and they aren’t able to tell their story.”

Mike Holmes Fit Club More than 13,000 men in Florida last year were diagnosed with prostate cancer and one in seven men in America will be diagnosed in their lifetime. However, Jacksonville native Mike Holmes is doing everything he can to make sure he and others are not one of them.
“It’s very important for anyone to be active,” said Holmes, who owns a personal training facility. Candidly, Holmes admits men are not his largest clientele. “It’s the ego and the pride of someone telling you how to work out, which men feel they know how to do on their own,” Holmes said. However, enlisting the support of a personal trainer can give men the much-needed accountability and expertise to succeed, Holmes said. Studies of exercise and prostate cancer risk have mostly shown that men who exercise may have a reduced risk of prostate cancer. Holmes, a former professional athlete, said he asks each new client the same questions to inspire achievement. “’What are you doing now? Do you have any goals? How are (you) reaching (your) goals?’”

I’m a huge supporter of the Donna Marathon – the Breast Cancer Marathon held in Jax Beach in February each year. I have personally run the marathon, and it means a lot to me. I’m a breast cancer survivor myself.
I am most looking forward to Boaters Skip Day, because it has become such a fun event. I love the idea, that people are “skipping,” and getting in a boat day during the week, complete with a band and lots of fun! It is great to see all the big “go fast” boats, rafted up together, they are amazing. The food is always great and how often do you get to swim up to a table to get your food?

The Chariots of Fur 5K Beach Run and Festival is an annual fundraising event that benefits St. Francis Animal Hospital, raising much needed funds to provide medical care to less fortunate family pets. This ever-popular event is a day of fun at the beach for four-legged and two-legged participants of all ages. The event includes a 5K run/walk or 1-mile Fun Run followed by 5K race awards and a festival. All registered participants will receive a souvenir tech t-shirt and race packet filled with goodies. The top 5K race finishers are awarded handmade ceramic dog bowls and the festival includes DOGA (yoga with your dog), music, vendors, dog contests, food trucks, dogs available for adoption, activities for kids, a raffle with great prizes and a silent auction.
The American Lung Association’s Fight for Air in February, which is climbing the 43 flights of the Bank of America building. I have severe asthma. I was blessed to find a doctor that was able to detect the underlying issue and perform surgery this past August. Just 13 days later, I was climbing the BOA tower for the first time. My happy day in 2017 is February 4, when I get to celebrate life and how I beat my fight for air.

The nonprofit organization All I Know Incorporated aims to provide hands-on CPR training to a minimum of 600 youth that live in at-risk and underserved neighborhoods across Duval, St. Johns and Clay Counties in the year 2017. Client Focused Media and Buzz Media are proud to announce Mark Marlar and Joey Vokac have been selected as finalists for the Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. Marlar and Vokac make up the video team at the two entities and worked independently with two other filmmakers on a short film, which they submitted to the competition. Their film, a documentary titled “Mo’Freaka,” was picked for the finals and the team will be headed to Utah in January for the festival. Marlar, who is the video director at CFM, served as the producer and sound production manager for the project. Vokac, a videographer with CFM, was the director. Derek Fleming was the writer and editor, and Kyle Vaughn was the camera operator. The team had just five days to put together the film, which is a self-titled mockumentary featuring an aspiring hip-hop artist from Jacksonville. “Working on a five-day schedule forces you to be extremely creative and realistic,” said Marlar. “As a team, we really had to dial down the pre-production process to have enough time to shoot and edit the film. Above all, it can get very frustrating working on such a tight schedule, so constant communication as a team was key.” The story of “Mo’Freaka” follows the struggles of an up and coming musician. It shows how he deals with rejection from family, friends and society as he works through the daily grind of trying to make it as a hip-
hop artist. The film was chosen out of a group of thousands and will show with about 100 others at the film festival, which takes place simultaneous to the Sundance Film Festival in Park City.
“Being a finalist in a national competition really gave us the confidence we needed to move forward as filmmakers,” said Vokac. “Having credible sources judge your work can be tough, but now we know that we have what it takes to compete with a higher level of filmmakers.” The Slamdance Film Festival will be held January 20-26, 2017, in Park City, Utah. The festival was created in 1995 by filmmakers for filmmakers. The organization is focused on fostering the development of unique and innovative filmmakers. Up-and-coming writers, directors and producers will be showcasing their work alongside seasoned veterans of the industry.

Good tacos are a thing of beauty. Great tacos, well, that’s just doing God’s work right there. Jacksonville has no shortage of taco joints, but truly amazing, authentic tacos are hard to come by unless you know where to look. I was fortunate enough to catch the El Agave Azul truck down at the Jax Food Truck Food Court and let me tell you, my life will never be the same again. I’ve made many trips south of the border in my lifetime and had yet to find any place here in Florida that could come close to the amazing tacos you can find at simple, roadside stands or taquerias. El Agave Azul is the exception to that. First, allow me to let you know that these are definitely not the dressed-up tacos you might find at spots on the Beaches. While those are delicious as well, these are elegant in their simplicity. For starters, the basic taco here is just their meat topped with a little cilantro and diced white onion, served on a fresh, corn tortilla. If you’re feeling the need for a little extra color on top, you can upgrade any of their options to a supreme with lettuce, tomato and sour cream for just a dollar more. Squeeze a little fresh lime on top, and you’re all set. The day I went, I opted for one chorizo and one pollo done in the regular style, along with an al pastor loaded up as a supreme. For those of you that aren’t familiar with those terms, chorizo is a slightly spicy sausage, pollo is chicken and al pastor is marinated pork. The al pastor was delicious, with a slightly stronger kick than I had expected, while the chicken was actually a little on the sweet side. The chorizo won me over by a landslide though. As I’ve said before, I’m a wuss when it comes to spicy foods, and their chorizo taco had just enough of a kick for me to feel it, but was the savoriest of the three tacos. So when you’re craving a truly authentic taco experience, give El Agave Azul a chance.

Game Day Mission & History Blue-Grey Football was established in 1989 by Gus Bell and his son Erik Bell. Together, they established the brand to help prep prospects from all over the country receive national exposure and increase their chances to secure scholarships to a college. Fast forward to today, Blue-Grey Football proudly hosts close to 20 AllAmerican Combines at venues all over the country, most inside stadiums that are home to NFL teams. On a yearly basis, the best of best meet on the biggest stages around: East vs. West at Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium, North vs. South at Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Raymond James Stadium and Blue vs. Grey at Jacksonville Jaguars’ EverBank Field.
The Giants are an ABA (American Basketball Association) professional basketball team that was introduced in 2010. He’s 21st in the ASUN Conference in scoring and his 53.2 shooting percentage is 8th in the league. Earlier this season, Harris was also recognized as the ASUN Conference’s Newcomer of the week.

The Jacksonville Bar Association Young Lawyers Section’s Chips 4 Change Charity Poker Tournament benefiting Yoga 4 Change on January 12 at bestbet Jacksonville. It is a bounty-style charity poker tournament. From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., attendees can socialize or take free poker lessons while enjoying cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. The tournament begins at 6:30 p.m. Celebrity bounties will play poker at each table. Players who knock out a bounty will win prizes! The event is a community event and the public is encouraged to attend and play some poker for a great cause.

My most favorite event is the Small Business Week Celebration. It is a weeklong celebration highlighting Small Business Advocates and business owners that have made an impact. Awards include Top Business for: Veteran Owned, Woman Owned, and Minority Owned, as well as Financial Advocate, Exporter, and Small Business Person of the Year. Small Business is so vital to our area and it is important we acknowledge the impact they have in our community.

The Mukti Freedom Gala will raise funds to support our Survivor Advocate Program, providing survivors with case management, mental health counseling, crisis counseling and weekly classes.
