Internships IES Abroad offers business, teaching, public service, and arts and culture internships and field experiences for credit. Internship Application, Placement, and Registration To apply for an internship, you must submit the Internship Application in your MyIESabroad account, which requires you to upload the following application pieces: 

 

Resume or CV in English—Describe work experiences in order of most recent to least recent including employer’s address, your position title, and dates of employment. Include courses that have prepared you for this internship (language, computer, etc.) and the exact university degree you plan to receive. Also mention any special honors or achievements, relevant volunteer work or campus activities, computer skills, and any foreign language knowledge. Internship Approval Form signed by your home school Study Abroad Coordinator or Academic Advisor A professional reference letter and a personal reference letter (Business internship only)

You may apply for more than one internship before arrival; however, during orientation and the German intensive period, you must choose only one. You are also able to apply for internships upon arrival in Vienna. IES Abroad does not guarantee placement in an internship. Placement is limited. Final selection will be made in Vienna after interviews with the faculty internship coordinator and the organization sponsoring the internship. Once you are enrolled in an internship, you may not drop it. Credit Subject to prior approval of the home institution, students receive three semester hours of credit (equivalent to one semester course) for the combined internship and seminar. Internships are made up of two main components:  

Weekly seminar taught by the IES Abroad internship coordinator with readings, assignments, and discussions Hours onsite working with a mentor in a school, business, or organization (in most cases)

IB395 Supervised Business Internship Seminar Business internships are arranged with multinational corporations and mostly Austrian firms. Past assignments have covered a range of training areas including marketing, accounting, sales, public relations, research, consulting, computer programming, investment banking, and international banking. The internship assignment is ordinarily concentrated in one department, but the employing firm will likely make an effort to introduce you to other aspects of its work.


Time & Work Involved      

Work 8-10 hours a week at your internship placement Meet regularly with an internship seminar group to discuss your work with other students in the program Participate in special events You will meet regularly with the IES Abroad internship supervisor Prepare a work journal Write a major research paper that includes a two-page summary of your tasks at the employing firm

Qualifications & Selection  

Some preparation in business, economics, or another business-related field Three semesters of German prior to arrival in Vienna, or two semesters with the recommendation of your intensive German instructor at IES Abroad; occasional exceptions may be made for students with skills in other areas, especially computers Preference will be given to students who speak German well and to full-year students

ED395 Supervised Teaching Field Experience IES Abroad teaching internships are a wonderful cultural experience, helping you to integrate into the local community, and improve your German language skills. This is a particularly popular internship opportunity since it provides access to Austrian culture through the school system. If you plan to do a teaching internship, we recommend you bring photos, maps, and similar visual materials of your hometown and state to use in the classroom. Time and Work Involved 

 

Introductory period in a Viennese school to acquaint you with the method of teaching English as a foreign language and with the administration of an Austrian school. Types of schools include Kindergarten and elementary, middle, and high schools, and a few other special institutions as well. 4-5 weekly student teaching sessions at your assigned educational institution in an English class with an Austrian professor in addition to preparation time of topics and lessons Weekly internship seminar class sessions

Qualifications   

Some experience in working with young people Openness, a good sense of humor, and willingness to explore and accept differences between your own culture and that of your students Education major not necessary


IN/SO395 Supervised Public Service Internship Seminar Supervised public internships involve work with environmental, social, medical, and charitable organizations. You will be able to choose a preferred organization from a list of options according to your abilities and capacity. Time and Work Involved  

Volunteer at a not-for-profit organization about 8-10 hours per week during the semester Weekly internship seminar class sessions

Qualifications   

Proficiency in German not required Open-mindedness, courage, and interest in learning about nonprofit organizations Possible interest in sociology, social work, or community outreach

CU395 Arts and Culture Internship Seminar The arts and culture internship offers first-hand experience and involvement in Austrian cultural institutions (including museums and theaters), businesses, and service organizations engaged in the fields of arts, culture, and entertainment in Austria. The work experience component of the internship is supplemented by a seminar which explores marketing, fundraising, and sponsorship applied in the field of arts and culture. In this course, you will be exposed to not-for-profit and for-profit management practices in this sector and discuss the differences between the United States and Austria. Time and Work Involved  

Work 8-10 hours per week at your internship placement Weekly seminar class sessions

Your job will vary depending upon the nature of the organization as well as the department in which you will work, though most of the work will consist of projects and research. Qualifications  

Vary according to the internship sponsor Most do not require German
