Commitment Choosing to do a part-time internship is a serious commitment and requires you to intern two full days per week at your placement in addition to attending a weekly 1.25 hour internship seminar at the IES Abroad Center. You may need to use public transportation to commute to your placement, for which you should budget accordingly.

If an internship seems right for you, you need to ensure that your home school approves an internship for credit. Next, think about different kinds of internships that would fit into your plans. Internships are not as common in the Irish workplace as they are in the United States and, in most cases, will not be as structured. On the other hand, placements are often more personalized: organizations tend to be smaller, leading to the assignment of more meaningful projects. A part-time internship can be a wonderful experience and a great way to meet locals; we want to help you make the most of it! Application Requirements A completed internship/service learning application consists of:  

Internship Application Form - Submit this form to give the Internship Coordinator an idea of what type of internship you would like to pursue. Internship ApprovalForm - Downloaded from and submitted on the Internship Application Form. The Internship Approval Form must be completed by your current college or university Study Abroad Coordinator or Academic Advisor for authorization. It must be signed and uploaded to your MyIESabroad account. CV and Cover Letter – Refer to the Dublin Introduction to CV and Cover Letter Writing for parameters. Your letter will allow potential host organizations to better understand your interest, skills, and background experience. Two Letters of Recommendation - At least one letter of recommendation should be from a past employer and the other letter of recommendation can be from a college professor. This letter should not be addressed to IES Abroad. Instead, it should be targeted toward prospective internship hosts in the field in which you would like to work. Your recommendation letters will allow potential host organizations to better understand your interest, character, and background experience. These letters should be on official letterhead. They can be uploaded electronically via your Internship Application Form. If it is not possible to send an electronic copy of the letters of recommendation, please send via mail to the IES Abroad Chicago office.

Applications that are incomplete or are missing the appropriate signatures will not be considered. Completed applications received after the deadline will be reviewed at the discretion of the program director and will be given low priority for placement. Internships are highly sought after and competitive positions, as such, we highly recommend submitting your form early to give us the best possibility of meeting your preferences. Selection IES Abroad does not guarantee placement in a part-time internship. Final selection cannot be made until you have arrived on-site and placements depend on the position's availability and requirements, as well as your background and skills. Following a conversation with the Internship Coordinator in Dublin, once your CV and cover letter are perfected, the placement process begins. Depending on the host organization, you may or may not be required to have phone/Skype interviews with potential internship placements. Attire Please keep in mind that business and political internship sites require professional dress. Therefore, if

you intend to intern in Dublin, bring appropriate, business formal clothing. The majority of the rest of our internships are business casual. Service Learning The Service Learning course, Youth Engagement and Education in Ireland, offers a perfect opportunity to get actively involved with the community and to gain a deeper understanding of the city’s culture and society. Working alongside local people, you'll work with youth groups dealing with adversity, social exclusion, and literacy issues, while contributing your skills towards a community-driven solution. Opting to participate in Service Learning is a serious commitment and requires you to volunteer for a minimum of five hours per week with a local organization, accompanied by a weekly 1.25-hour academic, for-credit service learning seminar at the IES Abroad Dublin Center. You may need to use public transportation to commute to the local organization, for which you should budget accordingly. The service learning seminar explores youth engagement and education in Ireland. From both a policy and sociological perspective, this course examines the relationship between State, Church, family, and education and the impact these relationships have on youth in Ireland. The seminar analyzes the role of civic engagement using theoretical perspectives; namely individualism, collectivism, and social capital
