What Ed has to say: Hello everyone, welcome to 008 ITK Magazine. My, my, this year is getting on and once again we are in a new month and also one third of the way into 2011.

Summer in Cape Town has been phenomenal and also slightly tiring at the same time. I want cooler autumn weather (I like the sun, don‘t get me wrong), but much prefer cooler, or cold weather. Well enough of weather talk. Right, we have caught up The Parlotones, they are amazing lads, we had a bit of fun with them, nothing too serious. Then, if you have not seen the movie Black Swan (ok, so you don‘t have to be a ballet fan), maybe use it as a Natalie Portman excuse(This is if you‘re dead set on not watching the film). It is a brilliant movie. Natalie is an amazing actress and the roles she always lands are just spot on. Just a little warning, it is an emotionally dark film and you do get caught of guard by a few scenes(I had the odd OMG moment, with a shriek here and there). Combining music and arts is fabulous, and talking about that, Poetry in Motion 2 will be on stage from March at the Artscape, so go and get your tickets, go on then now. I caught up with international designer Ryan Mc Elhinney who is a fabulous creative individual, plus Zoe once again found a fantastic designer in South Africa, so have a read and see what they chatted about. There is always a lot of exciting things happening wit ITK the brand, you will just have to keep up to date online and make sure you keep track. Till then, have a great March, get the Easter bunny outfit ready, till then. Be, IN THE KNOW nina@itkmag.com

When we look at The Parlotones, one of South Africa‟s best local and international Exports within the music industry, one cannot Help but be in awe of their success and I‟m Sure a lot of hard work that came with it all. The one thing about The Parlotones, is that They have an amazing sound, they are unique and as A band, they are most definitely by far humble Down to earth and in many ways „real‟. Musician In SA are extremely hard done by; without Dedication, constant persistence in getting Yourself out there, along with a good management Team, there is certainly no reason why many Up and coming, old talented or just talented Individuals cannot make it in the industry. Seriousness aside, ITK managed to ask the boys Some fun questions(why steer the typical interview Route) I am sure there is only so much of „how it all began‟ questions. ITK also recently worked with the lads, but More so this is what some of the band members had to say….sadly Khan and Neil went missing in action, we will publish their version to answers online when we receive it. The Parlotones are currently travelling abroad……

THE NUMERICAL QUESTION ITK MAG: If Neil had 2 drumsticks and gave away 1, how many drumsticks will be left over? Glen: Zero. Khan: Missing in Action!!!!! Neil: Missing in Action!!!! Paul: Are they KFC drumsticks? If they are, he is normally throwing them at angry bloggers. WORD ASSOCIATION ITK MAG: Tart Glen: No thanks. Paul: Peppermint ITK MAG: Recipe for a good night out?

Glen: Rum. Paul: I prefer to stay home, but if I'm dragged out I like some place with cool music, but not too loud... like at home. ITK MAG: How do you entertain your mates? Anything we should know about, special party tricks? Glen: I generally get drunk and act really stupid, and then hear about my shenanigans the next day, much to my despair. Paul: Jokes, stories about tour, talking about bands and music, the occasional loud burp... ITK MAG: Best or worst moment in life? Glen: Deep. I don‘t think I‘ve experienced either yet. Paul: One of the worst was landing in a freezing cold Ireland, standing in a queue outside in the rain, waiting for a taxi for about 40 minutes... one of the best was the hot shower and warm bed that was waiting at the hotel at the end of that taxi ride. ITK MAG: Your first kiss? Glen: There‘s this old photo of me and my best girl friend kissing on a swing when we were like 5 years old or so. I guess that was it. Paul: Clumsy, but that's the story of my life.

ITK MAG: Funniest thing you did to another band member whilst on tour?

Paul: Made Kahn fly all the way back to South Africa to judge Idols while we lounged around in London watching movies and going to the pub. ITK MAG: What don‘t you travel without, excluding your gear of course? Glen: PSP, wallet, phone, watch. Paul: A couple of good books (although it's now a Nook), blackberry and lip-ice. ITK MAG: Do you have band rituals before going on stage? If yes explain, if no, but you could have one, what it would it entail…. Glen: Nah. I can never stick to anything. Paul: We kick everyone out of backstage half an hour before show time, to focus and clear our minds. A drink of some sort to settle the nerves. Some exercises, nothing too hectic though. If I had to have just one, it would be a long head massage. About 2 hours or so should be fine. ITK MAG: Has fans ever A – flashed their bits to you and B have girls ever chucked undergarments onto stage? Or are the girls just plain boring? Glen: Yes, yes, and yes. Paul: Yes to both, quite often. Happened to me this afternoon actually, but it was my wife (so I dunno if that counts?) ITK MAG: Would you braai Lady Gaga, if she rocked up at your house in her famous meat attire? Glen: I‘m a vegetarian, so no, she can stand outside and get eaten by the neighbourhood dogs instead. Paul: No, that's ridiculous! But if she showed up in that egg.... that's a different story. ITK MAG: Who would make the ideal 5th band member of The Parlotones, why would you choose them? 1 – SYLVESTER STALLONE / 2 - PAMELA ANDERSON/ 3 -VANILLA ICE/ 4 STINKY / 5 -JULIUS MALEMA Glen: One thing we‘ve learnt is that there‘s no such thing as an ―ideal 5 th band member.‖ I would pick Pamela though, and make sure we always share a room. Paul: Stinky is already in the band, his real name is Neil Pauw. But I would have to go with option 6. Sandra Bullock, because she is awesome. Or option 7. Robert Downey jnr, he would make things interesting I can imagine.

Neil and Khan missing in action!

Serious Stuff: (Anyone may answer this) – Paul‟s Version 2. Next Album? - Hopefully this year, but not promising anything. We are busy working on some new songs that you will start hearing at gigs soon. 3. Travel Destinations? - Mostly America this year, but also Germany and the UK. 4. Tour Dates? - The whole year. 5. What you‟re hoping to achieve? - To keep growing and improve. 6. Few years from now? - To still be playing, touring, recording and having the occasional holiday. 7. Locally based or International? - Home is where the heart is, and that will always be South Africa. 8. Country most interested to perform? - I love going to Switzerland. 9. Are you on twitter and what is your group? - Yes, look for Paul_Parlotones or just Parlotones. 10. Facebook? - Yes, www.facebook.com/theparlotones 11. Website? - Probably, just Google it. 12. What have been your influences? - Many, many bands. Some of my favourite bands ever are Wilco, Violent Femmes, Radiohead, Muse, The National and more recently I've been listening to a lot of Rodrigo y Gabriela and old Bon Jovi albums. 13. You toured with Starsailor, one of my favourite bands, what was that like? - It was awesome, such a cool band and really rad guys. We had the best time, one of the best and most memorable tours so far. 14. You had a packed out Dome with just your fans? Your thoughts? Unbelievable, still hard to think we actually did it. We should do it again sometime... 15. What is it like being small fish in big pond when travelling abroad? Does this take you back to the roots of where you began, so to speak in SA? - Yeah, it's a cool thing. Keeps that fire alive inside, the desire to win fans and play your best. And keeps you humble and makes you realize no matter how big and cool you may think you are, you've still got a long way to go. 16. Or does this make your journey a lot more worth the effort? - The journey is never ending, always new surprises, rewards and challenges around each bend. 17. Your audience abroad, how has that been? - Very cool, it's always nice to win over foreign audiences. it's growing steadily as well, each time we go back the audience has grown. And we also start seeing regular faces. 18. No place like home??? - Absolutely. Interview by , Nina Zani

"This book is about luck perceived and disguised as nonluck (that is, skills), and randomness perceived and disguised as nonrandomness (that is, determinism). It manifests itself in the shape of the lucky fool, defined as a person who benefited from a disproportionate share of luck but attributes his success to some other. An irreverent introspective rumination on the deformations caused by randomness through literature, markets, philosophy, science, and mathematics, and a presentation of applied stoicism. It made many readers feel better about their comparative fate. READ MORE

War. Fast Food. Pornography. Pervasive in our culture, these three obsessions may seem to represent the worst qualities of humankind. But what have our lust, greed and rage driven us to achieve? In this surprising and original book, Peter Nowak argues that most of the major technological advances of the last sixty years have stemmed from the trio of billion-dollar industries that cater to our basest impulses. From Saran Wrap to aerosols, digital cameras to cold medicine and GM foods to Google, many of the gadgets and conveniences we enjoy today can be traced back to either the porn, military or fast food industry. Joel Janse van Vuuren – Perception of Beauty … [11:12:38 AM] ITK MAGAZINE: Hi Joel, how you doing? Thanks so much for joining ITK for a chat! [11:13:34 AM] Joel Janse van Vuuren: Hey, it's a pleasure, thanks so much for this opportunity. I‘m doing well thanks, it‘s a perfect day here in Johannesburg. [11:14:32 AM] ITK MAGAZINE: Can't say the same for Durbs - it‘s all cloudy here! Give us a little trip down memory lane, where did you grow up and what and where did you study? [11:18:06 AM] Joel Janse van Vuuren: Well up until December last year I was based in Durban, having grown up in the surrounding areas, it became the inevitable place to study fashion design. I began studying in 2005 at Linea Academy but crossed over to the Durban University of Technology in 2007, where I received my Bachelor of Technology in Fashion and Textiles. I'm now living in Joburg, and am in the process of launching my brand. [11:19:40 AM] ITK MAGAZINE: Awesome - so what inspired the move to Joburg? Are you enjoying the bright lights of the big city? [11:22:45 AM] Joel Janse van Vuuren: That‘s one of the reasons I moved up, for the bright lights :) well that and family, to me family is important and it‘s great to finally be around them again. In terms of work, I'd say there is a lot more happening in the fashion industry in Joburg and Cape Town compared to Durban, unfortunately because Durban has great weather, generally, and people, and yes I am enjoying Joburg. [11:25:43 AM] ITK MAGAZINE: Glad to hear you enjoying it! Sadly it does seem that Durban loses a lot of very talented people to Joburg, us Durbanites need to do something about that! So what is the Joel Janse Van Vuuren label all about? Do you focus on certain pieces? [11:31:09 AM] Joel Janse van Vuuren: My brand at the moment focuses on women‘s high fashion, one off pieces that toy with different silhouettes and structures, these pieces also lead to a ready-to-wear range which is in the pipeline. I'm still in the process of developing my label so in my head I have a "under construction" sign but for now I really focus on developing my own creativity and portraying my perception of beauty.

11:33:24 AM] ITK MAGAZINE: Well from what I have seen the world is going to love your perception of beauty, and I can't wait to watch the label unfold! You create such beautiful and unique garments, I have to ask, what are you wearing today? [11:36:06 AM] Joel Janse van Vuuren: Haha, well nothing out of the ordinary I suppose, beige corduroy shorts, a grey printed wide neck t shirt and Adidas trainers. For my personal wardrobe it‘s about comfort, colour and shape. [11:37:46 AM] ITK MAGAZINE: Well you always look great, so thanks for sharing! I have to agree there is nothing better than being comfortable while looking good! [11:38:33 AM] ITK MAGAZINE: Named as one of Cleo Magazine's up and coming, hot, local talent to keep an eye on, how did you get your name out there? [11:40:45 AM] Joel Janse van Vuuren: One of the best ways I‘ve heard of getting your name out there is by entering competitions, it's the best way to get experience and get people to know your name. That, and also just putting yourself out there meeting people, dressing people and sending your work through to different publications. [11:42:34 AM] ITK MAGAZINE: Having then started your own label from scratch and being on the process of establishing yourself, do you have any other words of wisdom for a young designer just starting out? Sounds like you know what you speaking about ;) [11:45:45 AM] Joel Janse van Vuuren: Thanks, well I think as I‘ve said entering competitions and putting yourself out there. Working with known designers also is very beneficial and experience, it‘s all about racking up those 10000 hours, as Malcolm Gladwell says. [11:47:44 AM] ITK MAGAZINE: Wise words, it's all about putting in the hours! How can people get hold of you and get their fashionista paws on one of your gorgeous garments? [11:50:32 AM] Joel Janse van Vuuren: At the moment I'm based out of my house with the aim to stock stores by midyear, but the best way to get hold of me is through my website www.joeljansevanvuuren.com , where one can contact me to get a garment made or purchase an already made garment. [11:53:29 AM] ITK MAGAZINE: Will definitely bookmark the site and keep an eye on you! I am dying to get my fashionista paws on a piece of yours! Any favourite designer, someone you really admire? [11:56:27 AM] Joel Janse van Vuuren: After doing quite a bit of research last year into designers. I really admire the work of Rei Kawakubo who has the label Comme des Gracon, and Yohji Yamamoto, they‘ve both been doing revolutionary things for fashion since the eighties. Locally my favourite designers are Marianne Fassler and Clive Rundle.

[12:24:55 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: Haaha! That is hysterical, I am sure you were put off strawberries for some time after that! It's great to see people doing their bit promoting clear messages on HIV/AIDS in South Africa! Now my favourite question, I just have to ask - do you have a funny/special quirk that you would bravely tell the ITK readers? [12:28:35 PM] Joel Janse van Vuuren: Umm haha, you‘ve kind of caught me out here. I can‘t think of any off hand - okay well a small thing but I have a bit of a OCD when it comes to watching series, I can literally sit down and watch entire seasons and really forget about life!! It‘s a great slightly unhealthy escape. [12:30:17 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: Sometimes I believe it is good for the soul to indulge in a bit of escapism! Any favourite series? [12:31:18 PM] Joel Janse van Vuuren: I agree completely, at the moment its Boardwalk Empire; last week it was The Walking Dead. [12:32:49 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: I have heard that Boardwalk Empire is amazing - haven't got around to watching it yet though! A fun fact - I know you have a really amazing tattoo - could you divulge the story behind that? [12:34:52 PM] Joel Janse van Vuuren: Yes, it‘s quite a big one, my dad is an artist and for my birthday in 2009 I asked him to draw me a tree, one of our favourite things, and I then got the tree drawing tattooed across my whole back and a little on the side, and man it hurt! [12:37:08 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: What is the age old saying - beauty is pain! I have to say it is one of the most original tattoo's I‘ve seen and it really looks like a piece of art! Before you go, do you have any hot fashion tips for the ITK readers? [12:39:22 PM] Joel Janse van Vuuren: I want to tell people to just be true to themselves with what they wear and try not worry what people think, and avoid crocs, like the plague. [12:41:21 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: Hahaa - Amen! I think crocs are the ugliest thing ever invented!! Thanks so much for chatting to us today, it was great to catch up and get the man behind the label! Keep well, keep in touch with ITK and we wish you the very best for the future - look forward to watching you grow! [12:42:58 PM] Joel Janse van Vuuren: Thanks Zoe, great chatting with you! I‘ll keep in touch. [12:43:28 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: Have a great day! Chat soon :)

11:58:21 AM] ITK MAGAZINE: That brings me to my next question, you did some work with Marianne Fassler, she is a really established and iconic South African designer, that must have been amazing! Tell us a bit about that? [12:03:04 PM] Joel Janse van Vuuren: Yes it really is amazing, part of studying fashion design is doing an internship in third year, which for mine I went to work under Marianne Fassler, which was an incredible experience and I learnt alot. You can have all the creativity in the world, but if you don‘t have the business mind behind it, it won‘t work. Over the years we've kept in contact and I was given the opportunity last year to work with Marianne Fassler and Albertus Swanepoel assisting Marianne Fassler in her collection late last year. It was awesome. [12:05:01 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: Wow that must have been an incredible experience! Well done to you! So what can we look forward to from Joel Janse van Vuuren himself? I heard a whisper about fashion week?! [12:08:22 PM] Joel Janse van Vuuren: Yes that‘s my exciting news at the moment. I have a slot in a fashion show at SA fashion week at the end of March, the show is called Rising Stars and focuses on young designers helping them establish themselves and find out which direction within the industry they'd like to take. I'd really recommend it to all aspiring designers to do. This is the project I'm busy working on at the moment, new silhouettes, new colour and fabric is always great to work with. [12:10:09 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: Ooh, that is so exciting! Can you let us into your head and give us some insight into your design process? Where does your inspiration come from and how does the magic happen? [12:15:31 PM] Joel Janse van Vuuren: A lot of current fashion is based on trends for a particular season, but that‘s not the way I really want to do it, although to some extent i think everyone does even on a subconscious level. Last year, as part of my dissertation, I explored the idea of using Derrida's theory of Deconstruction as a design tool to make creative unique fashion designs, which I then translate into actual garments. I try get inspiration from everything in life, at the moment I am enjoying the work of the Pre-Raphaelites. [12:19:05 PM] ITK MAGAZINE: Fashion and art have always been ideal bedfellows! I like your idea of translating theory into reality and obviously, this has had an amazing result for you! What is the most ridiculous thing you have done fashion wise? [12:22:11 PM] Joel Janse van Vuuren: That would definitely be the dress I made from condoms in late 2009! I entered a fashion competition which promoted the awareness of HIV and Aids, it was a lot of fun, and I made it with strawberry scented condoms which unfortunately made my entire flat smell like fake strawberries for a while. :)

Pernod Ricard Team

Summer is clearly not over yet gentlemen, so let’s not slack on our attire. We may not all be with a six pack and torsos that would make the girls go weak(although, this is why we hit the gym a few hrs a time),but keeping up with the best trends and or least trying to, could make you favourable amongst the (difficult species-woman)!

A

SWIM SHORTS A= Swims shorts with stripes or floral patterns always look good. Don‘t opt for the Speedo look unless you‘ve been casted for that latest Dolce and Gabbana advert – not that attractive, plus the female tend to shy away from blokes like that.

B

CLASSIC POLO SHIRT B= Polo shirts are almost as safe as can be, yet classical. Depending on the look and brand, you can almost alter the dress style, from a relaxed look to a more stylish evening out look. Many great brands around, so don‘t just stop at the Lacoste.

CLASSIC STRAIGH CUT SHORTS C=Now, we all know how easy it is, to just pull on those old baggy cargo shorts, it doesn‘t give you shape and sophistication, so hopefully you have already opted for a more straight cut look, plain colours work well.

C

The ULTRA UBER HIP man doesn’t stop at any account to make sure that he looks perfectly manicured. V necks, collar style and slim designs look good and can boost ego, especially expressing your individual style and taste. We boast three different looks, all well suited for different occasions. Jumpers, knitted vests and of course your jackets should almost go hand in hand. 1- This look is perfect for the mid day meeting. 2 – Very Male Chic and a very expressive view of the modern urban hip man. 3 – Slightly more classic and perfect for the night out with the lady, keep colours light and fabrics soft.

Style Gorilla's favourite, pairs of shoes for march. Seeing that we are on a more classical feel this month, I decided to visit the shopping malls and see what ‘trendy shoe stores’ have to offer. I opted for Aldo‘s and this is what I found. The practical buy – cost wise.

GREY LACE UP

Grey lace up sneaker type shoe can be worn casually.

BLACK LACE UP The black lace up is a perfect combination of both, dress up or down.

SHINY BLACK ANKLE BOOT

Sleek, shiny and very chic, is the perfect ankle boot which can be worn with slimline, grey suit or would go well with pin-stripe.

Fun has no limits.

The MINI Countryman. The MINI Countryman takes the hallmark driving fun of the brand into a new dimension. This is the first MINI to come with four doors and a large tailgate as well as a versatile interior offering space for up to five people. The MINI Countryman is the first member of the MINI family with a body measuring more than four metres in length and which can be ordered as an option with allwheel drive. With these features, in addition to the Countryman‘s raised seating position and optimised ride comfort, the world‘s only premium vehicle of its kind crosses the boundaries of urban mobility to take the trademark MINI feeling into new dimensions and win over additional target groups. The latest generation of petrol engines. Two petrol engines are available in South Africa. MINI

With its precise handling and captivating agility, the MINI Countryman transplants the driving characteristics associated with the brand into a new vehicle concept. These attributes are complemented by outstanding ride comfort, equipping the Countryman perfectly for a wider range of usage. Underpinning this is sophisticated new suspension technology, which includes a front axle with MacPherson spring struts and forged track control arms, multi-link rear suspension and the electromechanical power steering system EPS. The MINI Countryman comes as standard with the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system.

Design: Undeniably an individualist, unmistakably a MINI. The MINI Countryman exudes an air of originality, robustness and versatility. Four doors and a large tailgate, a striking roof shape and an upright front end reinforce its status as an individualist within the MINI ranks. Other distinctive features are its MINI proportions and design cues. Short overhangs, a high window line, the wrap-around look of the windows and the car‘s powerful over-the-wheel stance create a familiar appearance transplanted onto larger exterior dimensions. Elsewhere, the Countryman provides a fresh interpretation of characteristic MINI features, such as the hexagonal radiator grille, large headlights set into the bonnet, side indicator surrounds, voluminous wheel arches and vertical rear light clusters. Versatility and innovative details deliver cutting-edge functionality. The MINI Countryman comes standard with a three-seater bench in the rear or – as a no-cost option – two individual seats for passengers. The rear seats slide fore-and-aft individually or in a 60 : 40 split (three-seat bench), the angle of the backrests can be adjusted, and the backrests can be folded down either individually or in a 40 : 20 : 40 split (three-seat bench) – all of which allows luggage capacity to be increased from 350 litres to a maximum 1,170 litres. The MINI Countryman is also fitted as standard with the innovative Centre Rail storage and fastening system.

Top-class standard equipment, premiere for MINI Connected. The list of standard equipment for the MINI Countryman includes air conditioning and a CD audio system. A wide range of customisation options are also available, such as exterior paint finishes and interior colours designed exclusively for the Countryman, a host of upholstery variants, trim elements and model-specific equipment items, and highquality audio and navigation systems. A further in-car entertainment highlight is the unique MINI Connected system, which includes the news (via RSS feeds), Twitter and web radio functions.

Two Gauteng design heroes named ABSOLUT VISI Designer of the Year 2011 Architects Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens are the 2011 ABSOLUT VISI Designers of the Year. Having spent the past 18 years developing and crafting a truly African design language, the duo are recognized for their contribution to the Braamfontein Urban Intervention. Silvio and Lesley are in a league of their own, says VISI editor Jacquie Myburgh- Chemaly. ―They made the concept of turn-key design their own, creating the most extraordinary fantasy lodges all over Africa, where they designed everything right down to the teaspoons. Now they‘ve brought their magic to Braamfontein and our city is going to be so much richer for their contribution.‖ Now in its fifth year, the ABSOLUT VISI Designer of the Year is regarded as the Oscars of the design world. It‘s the result of a nomination process involving some of the most influential design and trend names in South Africa. They are invited to nominate designers for a particular body of work created during the preceding year. Paris-based trend expert Li Edelkoort joins the VISI team in selecting the overall winner. This is only the second time that architects have received the award; last year Johannesburg architect Peter Rich was the winner. The overall prize is a trip to Paris or London to attend a Paul Smith fashion show, sponsored by Paul Smith in South Africa, and all the nominees receive a gift from Paul Smith. All the finalists and their work are featured on the cover and inside the latest edition of VISI 53, which is on sale now. Last year VISI introduced a Special Prize for a designer or design team who had made an overall contribution to the South African design landscape, and not just for a single piece of work. Trevyn McGowan from Source was last year‘s winner. This year, Greg Gamble and Philippe van der Merwe from Tonic are the worthy recipients of the Special Award. Tonic is one the few design operations that consistently bring world-class design to the South African market. They should be an inspiration to many.

Along with South Point developers, Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens Architecture and Interiors have been awarded for plotting a design vision that will not only mean a renewed sense of community but also a betterlooking, better-functioning city precinct where urbanites can live, work and play. They envisage the return to the city centre as an opportunity to solve a variety of problems that face South Africa, including housing shortages, transport and security problems as well as sustainable development. N Their approach is to creatively re-inhabit existing structures (as opposed to constructing new buildings from scratch) – possibly the ―greenest‖ methodology in architecture. ―We found the re-use process in Braamfontein highly rewarding [for example, in Grove Square]. Decades of different architecture styles were carved out and unified with a playful approach to public space,‖ says Silvio. ―We see a return to the city centre as an opportunity to solve a variety of problems that face our country today – from housing shortages to transport and security problems.‖ Silvio and Lesley have developed a range of other uses for these highly dynamic spaces, the crowning glory of which is the Randlords Bar and Lounge on the 22nd floor of the South Point Towers. Their design concept for the bar is perfectly aligned with a contemporary Johannesburg lifestyle: a little bit of Africa, a touch of burlesque and a lot of sophistication. Future projects on rooftops in Braamfontein include hydroponic farms, which will be used to grow produce for markets and restaurants close to or even in the same building as these farms. The purpose is to make the produce more sustainable by cutting down on energy-guzzling transport. Other projects being tested on these rooftops include affordable solar and wind farms for generating electricity as well as ingenious water-collection systems. Release by: Nadia Padayachi

5 times Arizona Design awards winner , Irish borne Ryan Mc Elhinney and sought after international designer, has a raw, creative and very unique vision when it comes to producing contemporary, pop art and innovative designs. With his worked commissioned globally and Ryan’s new TOY project on the go, it will not take long before he becomes an household name and even more so a design darling in the creative world. ITK met the infamous designer in London a while back and recently managed to catch up with him and this is what Ryan had to say‌

ITK MAGAZINE: Hello Ryan, how are you? The long awaited interview! RM: Well in Ireland they say ―Do it slow cos I‘m in a hurry‖. Bit like the ―measure twice cut once‖ theory.

ITK MAGAZINE: So tell us, Irish borne, living in London, is this first choice of destination to live or is there another place close to your heart? RM: Well I did a year in Paris working for Disney from 93 to 94 and then 7 years in Arizona from 94 to 2001 working for 20th Century Fox. But in an Ideal world I‘d have a studio in a warm climate near the beach. I would love to live by the ocean. If I get to wear flip flops every day, then I‘m most happy. ITK MAGAZINE: What inspires you most about living in London? RM: The talent in London inspires me most. I moved here for that reason. I had visited the Tate Modern on holiday and I remember how inspired I was. When I walked out of the museum I turned around and looked back up at the large Tate Chimney and in an instant knew I had to move to London. I went back to Arizona that week and put my home on the market. I sold everything I owned and after 7 years returned with one suitcase ready to take on the world. My family is here so that‘s a massive bonus. darling in the creative world. ITK MAGAZINE: You‘re quite a talented individual with good eye for interior and design elements, what makes every item you create unique to the Ryan Mc Elhinney brand?

RM: I‘m most recognisable for my recycling and the fact that most elements of my design were destined for the trash heap. Also my work is very tongue and cheek. I try to turn designs on their head and make people think why I didn‘t think of that? ITK MAGAZINE: TOY BOY? Explain? RM: Well Toy Boy is a term I use for my Toy Sculpture collection. I used to be an Animator and while I lived in Arizona I got into going to charity shops. I found that they had 100‘s of bags of Toys. They were the cheapest thing in the shop so bought a couple of bags and made a little Toy Frame. I experimented further and started making bigger and bolder sculptures. In 2001 and 2002 I was awarded Arizona Designer of the Year 5 times and one award was for my Toy Sculptures. Over the years I have perfected my craft and now have clients all over the world. I think people love the sculptures because they see toys they played with when they were children themselves and every day spot something they didn‘t previously see.

ITK MAGAZINE: Are you a Toy Boy? (Throwing it in for good measures) RM: I wish I was a Toy Boy. I tried being one, but it brings too many problems. I think I‘ll leave it to the Sculptures eh! ITK MAGAZINE: On a more serious note (smile), you‘ve done interiors for some interesting people, which project to date has been the most fulfilling to do?

RM: Well some clients I cannot name but I designed a large Hair salon for Adrr Phelan in Covent Garden London. My most Fulfilling client is Momo who owns a very cutting edge Restaurant called Sketch in London. I made him a massive 9ft tall white Toy Tree. I just love this piece. ITK MAGAZINE: Your lamps, and plastic toys? Very creative concept – what goes in behind the production of one of those? RM: I source my Toys from car boot sales and Charity shops. Putting them together is a trade secret but it‘s mostly about continuity and telling a story with the toys. You don‘t just stick them on. You make sure the characters interact and look like there is a theme and relationship going on. The lamps are given 4 costs of paint to achieve the mirror like gloss finish. ITK MAGAZINE: Where would one find your work? RM: I used to sell exclusively to Lane Crawford in Hong Kong and Liberty in London. I now only work on a commission basis. ITK MAGAZINE: You were not always in contemporary design, in fact you studied animation? What happened? RM: I used to be an Animator but I never really had the passion to make it a full time career. It gave me a great life in America but I knew it was not forever. Then the studio I worked at closed down and I took it as a sign to make the transition into Interiors and Products. ITK MAGAZINE: Tell us more about ‗LOVE IS‘ characters? RM: God that‘s an old one. Well I grew up in the pub business and I used to draw Love is characters for my days customers. I remember I used to draw them on Leinster Arms headed paper. That‘s the name of my Dad‘s old pub in Ireland. I even remember the texture of the paper. It was grey slightly ribbed paper. I drew or should I say copied the characters and painted them in poster paints. I‘m sure they were shocking, but at the time they looked right. In return I got red lemonade crisps and peanuts. Hence having lots of fillings now…. I just saw a drawing my God Daughter Grainne did. She‘s only 8 and already an amazing drawer. Much better than I was at her age so keep an eye out for a future star.

ITK MAGAZINE: You‘ve made your mark in UK, are you looking to get your brand out to the rest of the world? RM: That‘s the plan hun. I have sold to clients in America, Dubai, New Zealand and Hong Kong to name a few but yes I‘d like to see my work everywhere. I‘m n talks with some Galleries at the moment so we shall see. ITK MAGAZINE: Are you focusing on any interesting projects at the moment?

RM: Yes, I‘m working on a series called Toy Soldier and Youth. I am making sculptures of from Toys of young Soldiers and kids in today‘s world. I‘m basing it on the needless waste of young lives on our streets and in wars. Each character depicts a certain pose and each character has a high beam light source emanating from the sculpture. For instance a Toy Youth has a high beam of light coming from the tip of his gun. This beam of light casts a circle on the ground and inside it is the name of a victim of gun crime. A toy soldier has a beam of light coming from his head. This light contains the name of a dead soldier. I‘m trying to get a charity involved so I can use it to raise some money and awareness. It‘s quite raw but if done positively I think it will make people think about it and take the matter seriously. (ITK AGREES) WE WILL LOOK OUT FOR YOUR CAMPAIGN!

ITK MAGAZINE: What would be the ultimate contemporary design project to work on? RM: I would love to design a hotel or a completely recycled home. ITK MAGAZINE: Irish men are said to have a good sense of humour is that true? RM: Oh of course. You dated one didn‘t you? Probably the maddest one there is, so I think you can answer that question. But seriously yes, we love to laugh. The only downside is we have a lot more wrinkles and laugh lines as a result. (NOW, NOW RYAN, NOT SUPPOSED TO SPILL THE EX FAMILY SECRETS HERE!! HA HA)

ITK MAGAZINE: Down time? RM: Oh I wish there was down time. My mind is always switched on. But a perfect night to me: Summer, flip flops, good friends and sushi. Definitely lots and lots of sushi, I‘m past the clubbing thing so dinner with friends around a big table is perfect.

ITK MAGAZINE: Music? RM: Music. I listen to everything. Right now - Paris by Malsom Mc Laren, The XXX and Mumford and Sons. ITK MAGAZINE: Women? RM: I love women. I think they are sooo beautiful. When God designed them he did a great job. They say behind every good man is a good woman. I‘m still trying to find her but I‘m sure some random day I‘ll walk around the corner and bump into her. I‘m actually very very shy. (Aawwweee – maybe we’ll find a you a lovely South African lass – Ladies – inbox meKidding)

ITK MAGAZINE: THE QUEEN RM: Alexander Mc Queen. Bless him. He died far too young. What a terrible shame. On the lady herself, I‘m Irish so I don‘t really know much about the monarchy. I‘m sure she is a lovely woman. I just saw the Kings Speech actually. Great movie! ITK MAGAZINE: Would you bbq Lady Gaga if she popped by your house with her meaty outfit? (smile) RM: Oh I don‘t think soo. I think she had done very well for herself but I‘d love to see the girl pop out in a pair of jeans, t shirt and flip flops. There is too much OTT stuff going on there for me. ITK MAGAZINE: Advice to those who wish to follow in similar footsteps to yours? RM: Be prepared to work your as off for years and years. Get used to hearing No No- No. Eventually if you believe enough, that No will become a YES. They say you need to spend 10,000 hours at something to be at the top of your game. Hold on I‘m going to grab the calculator…. MMM that‘s only 5 years. Maybe it takes a little longer but I guess that depends on what we deem success. I‘m not quite satisfied yet. (A true artist is never ever satisfied though)…. ITK MAGAZINE: Have you got a website? RM: Yes, www.ryanmcelhinney.co.uk but it needs to be updated. www.jackslounge.co.uk, www.jackscs.co.uk www.windmilltaverns.com

Dir ty

Sexy, Money

I’m lying in my bed and I think of the headlines I read in major news papers and posters up around Cape Town – yes the headlines stating , how Shrien took 46 tablets….um, trying to kill himself. It’s kind of funny and of course a very sad situation. Why would you want to pre meditate killing your partner, in his instance for money of course. Well speculation is rife and there are all sorts of stories milling around of him. Did he or did he not? Did he take those tablets because of stress or because of guilt? At what point do you lose control mentally, to which it takes you over the edge, when it comes to relationships, love and life? It seems, in times like these, one cannot even trust your better half even if they marry you! The ironic past of relationships were that, we were either paranoid because you feared that 1. your partner may cheat on you 2. or that there is another woman/man, or 3. if you go through a divorce, you would try and take the other person at hand for all they have (give it, they treated you badly, or you are just a money hungry person, who does not care whether or not you leave the other party involved penniless) uhum…. I‘m sure that is the norm, especially amongst those Marry Rich Tarts.

Sadly for those kinds of women or men, in the end, if you look at them and their lives, are angry, bitter and very lonely people. So does it really make it worth your time and effort and energy marrying for money? Most definitely not, I would think. I would rather go and work on a farm (somewhere where there is champers in the making) cannot work hard, without ending your day with a glass of sparkles now can we? –I‘m only joking. Money is evil in every sense! You work hard for it; you spend it easily and then when it‘s done you need more. Can you imagine what the world would be like if the saying‘ Money doesn‘t grow on trees‘ were in fact, If you plant a penny, it will grow into bank notes ( the high value ones) .It would be one greedy bloody world! Would we be going out there killing people for their pennies? I suppose it would depend on whether or not there are certain pennies that one can grow or not? Hmmm…. Why for the love of money would one go as far as want to hurt the other person? Someone you love no doubt? Isn‘t it enough that the thought had crossed your mind? When does this happen? Is it a case of ‗ you (the woman or the man) suck (excuse the pun) in bed‘ or your hips are to big? Or you have a small (ding dong), you selfish, bitch, bastard, lover, girlfriend or wife etc…. I suppose it is exactly that though, the greed, the plot (in this case – OH YES LETS VISIT AFRICA, SOUTH AFRICA TO BE PRECISE OH IN FACT, CAPE TOWN FOR THAT MATTER…LET‟S STRATEGISE A SCENARIO), but you see the important thing to remember is, that , media takes everything out of context. They always make things seem bigger than they are.

If Mr SD did his homework properly, maybe he could‘ve done a far better job, clearly he did not. Let alone find a celebrity publicist – Good old Maxy to represent him. We all know Max loves a good PR stint and he is good at doing, what he does best = PR……. So if in any way this was Dirty – I most certainly agree, the sexy element was never existing other than the fact that Mrs A D was an absolute stunner and with the money aspect – hey, he is spending more money now than what he would‘ve had , if he possibly plotted a more stable exercise. I‘m not saying he should‘ve done this now…humour me… Ladies and Gentleman, husbands and wives, boyfriends and girlfriends best you start checking up on your other halves, before you date, marry, sleep or do anything scandalous with the other involved. Do the following checklist on them: A: Monthly bank balance check – if they have 0 balance after a 3 month period, then be slightly careful, this is exactly what will happen to you – if you happen to give them your bank cards. B: If they have a fairly ok balance in the account, without the no 0 attached to it, then give them a chance, 2 strikes and they are out! C: If there are too many 00000000000, be aware, pack your bags, don‘t take the door keys, don‘t even ask for your jumper back, just leave, walk straight out the door and never look back. Chances are they plotted and schemed for those over doubly zeros! You are not seriously reading that are you? Point made. It‘s tough out there, relationships have become invaluable and trust something which is earned in many aspects and sometimes it hits you smack bang in the face and you are left with a big old scar.

If it‘s not good for you walk away and don‘t let the mind wander and conspirer – we cannot all afford Max Cliffor or William Booth and not quite sure what kind of spin Marcus Brooster would put on it – and you may just end up in places less attractive with no GUCCI OR PRADA to make you smile.

Cape Town has a new hot spot, which ITK is much in favour of and gets our top rating of 3 stars. It is sleek, boudoir, sophisticated and oozes pure indulgence with regards to décor. If you are a lover of decadent and eclectic mix of food, interior and music, then this is definitely the place to be. The outside of the building has the quirkiest elements implemented into their window display and the colour of the building gives you the idea that you’re about to enter fabulous territory. What am I talking about? Blakes bar and restaurant in upper Buitengracht Street (the old Ginja and Relish). A sister brand to the very popular Opal Lounge; the brand has once again taken a step further in creating something special for the most discerning Capetonian and traveller. No doubt during the winter months, this will be the perfect night out for a date, hanging with the girls or simply hiring out the venue for a special occasion. The venue is split into three levels, each boasting its creative element. So on our very impromptu visit, my partner in crime and I decided to join Blakes for drinks. We opted for the 3rd level, with a spectacular view of Cape Town’s famous Table Mountain. In the corner of the room, was the set up for a DJ – who on this particular evening was spinning the most soulful funky eclectic beats – James Brown to some deeper sounds of the soul/funk world. The Waiters were delightful and very helpful – in fact – I ordered something very particular that evening, something which was not really on the menu (Frangelico Coffee) – They did not question me, they made it, delivered the drinks, making me of course the happiest person no doubt. Was this service of class? Of top notch quality (I’ve had experiences in the past where waiters would give me the word we almost dread the most in hearing SORRY). My partner in crime and I went on a talking mission and didn’t want to be interrupted and if there is one thing they didn’t do – was hovering over us like lost sheep – we were absolutely in favour of the atmosphere. The way things were presented and just the general service. Considering we did not spend much time there, but will do so in future, ITK highly recommends you to visit. Bookings may be essential. www.blakesbar.co.za
