L
as tortugas marinas viven en nuestro planeta desde hace más de ciento ochenta millones de años; son reptiles, ponen huevos y respiran aire mediante pulmones.
Existen ocho especies de tortugas marinas en el mundo, todas están en peligro de extinción. Siete de ellas anidan en las costas mexicanas; en la Península de Yucatán se pueden encontrar cuatro: la Caguama, la Blanca o Verde, la Carey y la Laúd. En Quintana Roo, de mayo a octubre, llegan a anidar las tortugas Blanca y Caguama. Una misma tortuga puede salir hasta 7 veces a anidar durante la temporada, depositando un promedio de 100 a 120 huevos cada vez. Se estima que de cada 1,000 crías de tortuga que nacen, sólo 1 llega a la edad adulta. De ahí la importancia de proteger a estas especies en sus etapas más críticas de desarrollo.

he sea turtle has lived on our planet for over one hundred eighty million years. These reptiles lay eggs and breathe air, and can live to be one hundred years old. Eight species of sea turtle exist in the world, all of which are in danger of extinction. Seven species nest on the Mexican coasts from May to October each year. In the Yucatan Peninsula, there are four species that migrate and nest: the Caguama, the White (or Green), the Carey (Tortoiseshell), and the Laud. In Quintana Roo, the White and the Caguama turtles come to nest. It is not clear why certain species of turtles migrate to certain coasts. A single turtle can nest seven times during the five month nesting season, placing an average of 100 to 120 eggs each time. It is estimated that from each 1,000 turtles that are born, only 1 will reach adulthood. Therefore it is crucial that we protect these species in their more critical phases of development.
Existen diferentes programas encargados de proteger a las tortugas durante los meses en que llegan a las playas del Estado. En 1982 surge el Programa de Protección de Tortugas Marinas en el Litoral Central de Quintana Roo. En este programa han participado diversas instituciones, como el Centro de Investigaciones de Quintana Roo (CIQRO), El Colegio de la Frontera Sur, (ECOSUR), SEMARNAT, el Parque Xcaret, entre otros; actualmente se encuentra bajo la dirección de Flora, Fauna y Cultura de México, A.C.
Different programs exist to protect the turtles during the months in which they arrive at our beautiful beaches. In 1982 the Sea Turtle Protection Program in the Central Seaboard began in Quintana Roo. Many institutions have participated in the program since its inception, such as the Investigations Center of Quintana Roo (CIQRO), The School of the South Border, (ECOSUR), SEMARNAT and the Park Xcaret, among others. Currently the program is under the direction of Flora, Fauna y Cultura de Mexico, A.C.

Es una asociación civil sin fines de lucro, con el objetivo de trabajar a favor de la conservación de nuestro patrimonio natural y cultural, promoviendo que otros sectores se involucren y participen activamente en estos programas. ¿En qué consiste el Programa de Protección? Recorridos nocturnos Durante los meses de mayo a octubre se protegen 12 de las principales playas de anidación de tortugas, abarcando 120 km desde Playa del Carmen hasta la Reserva de Sian ka’an. Se realizan recorridos por las noches para detectar a las hembras en el momento de anidación, revisar su estado físico, aplicar un marcado y llevar un registro de ellas. Protección de nidos Otra actividad es determinar si el sitio que eligió la tortuga para de-positar sus huevos es adecuado, y en caso de que exista algún peligro el nido se traslada a un corral. Liberación de crías Las tortugas tardan aproximadamente 60 días en salir del huevo, cuando están listas el personal del programa las ayuda a llegar al mar, en donde pasarán el resto de su vida hasta alcanzar la edad adulta, que es cuando las hembras regresarán a nuestras playas. De 1996 a 2004, hemos liberado 1,761,719 crías de tortuga marina.
During the turtles’ nesting season from May to October, they protect twelve of the main nesting beaches, covering 120 km from Playa del Carmen to the Reserve of Sian ka’an. Members of the program conduct long beach walks throughout the night to find females at the nesting moment. They detect the physical state of the turtles, and apply tags to their flippers as a registration system. Program members will also determine if the area that the turtle chose to place its eggs is appropriate and safe. In the event that potential danger exists the nest will be transferred to a nearby corral. Turtle Liberation After she lays her eggs and covers the nest to protect it from predators, the turtle crawls back into the sea to rest before nesting again. She does not return to the eggs. The incubation period for the eggs is approximately 60 days, depending on the temperature of the sand. When they are ready the program personnel help the hatchlings arrive safely to the sea, where they will spend their lives until reaching the adult age, when the females will return to our beaches. Como cierre de la temporada en el mes de octubre se lleva a cabo el Festival de la Tortuga Marina en Tulúm, que culmina con la liberación de más de 2,000 crías en la playa de Xcacel. Las tortugas se asustan fácilmente con la presencia de personas y regresan al mar sin dejar sus huevos, por lo que es importante que no te acerques a ellas sin que algún responsable del programa te indique cómo puedes hacerlo. Por ningún motivo tomes fotos con flash. • No tires basura. Las tortugas confunden la basura con alimentos, principalmente los plásticos, lo que ocasiona que muchas de ellas mueran por esta causa. • Cuida la vegetación nativa. Si adquieres una propiedad en la costa, no quites la vegetación nativa, principalmente la planta de la uva, ya que esto ayuda a evitar la erosión de las playas, y permite a la tortuga hacer su nido. The turtles are frightened easily by the presence of people, and will return to sea without leaving their eggs. It is important that you do not approach them without authorized personnel from the program. • Do not throw trash from boats or leave it on the beach. The turtles confuse the trash with food, especially plastics, which can cause stomach problems and death. • Take care of the native vegetation on the beaches. If you buy property on the coast, do not remove the native vegetation, especially grape plants. They help prevent the erosion of the beaches, and allows the turtles continue nesting.
