ASK DOREEN

Saga of the Squeaky Sub-floor Dear Doreen, I’m at my wit’s end! I bought this house a year ago. I had a home inspection and the seller answered most of our questions and performed some minor repairs. After we moved in, we noticed every time we took a step, we heard a noise from the floor. So annoying! Both my agent and the home inspector said the sub-flooring is not accessible. The previous owners gave us information on the repairs made, including something to do with the floor. Do you think I should take legal action? Noise Crazy Dear Noise, I’m not a lawyer, so I can’t give legal advice. As a Realtor, I can tell you sellers are obligated to disclose all known material facts about the property. However, buyers must take an active role in obtaining information by reviewing the disclosures and getting a professional inspection. Also, buyers should conduct a thorough final walkthrough of the property to ensure it’s in acceptable condition. After the closing, it’s often too late to address issues. Since this issue is important to you, do see an attorney to explore what recourse you have -possibly one who will do a free consultation. Doreen

‘Mom Has More Family Now’

L

abor Day weekend was such a reminder of ASR opening last year, Sept 1. It was so exciting and such a beautiful home. After I arranged to have Mom live there I was glad and scared at the same time. It was so hard to take her out of her home but Cheryl and Sam made it extremely easy for me. They explained everything to Mom and made her feel welcome, safe and at home. As the year has gone by and Mom has adjusted to her new home, all I have is gratitude to Cheryl and Sam for the wonderful care Mom receives there.

Gayla and her mom

just before dinner, I could smell the wonderful food cooking and Sam and his son were there talking and laughing with Mom. I had such a wonderful feeling of happiness because I felt like I was leaving her with her family who loves her and cares for her.

It was a great decision to move Mom to a new home with other people because she is much happier. She is on a schedule of activities and meals and I always know what she is doing on any given day. Mom living at ASR allows It doesn’t get any better than that. I me the freedom to travel and know love ASR! that she is cared for and her schedule remains the same. As I left her yesterday —Gayla

HAPPY 1st BIRTHDAY, ASR

During the many years we’ve run Anthem Senior Living—the only 10-bed licensed facility in Parkside for over a decade—not a week went by without someone asking “when will you be opening another?” Last year, we knew the time was right so we went into high gear renovating our second Anthem location. And, one year ago, Anthem NOW OFFER Senior Retreat was born. Our goal was to ING N ATIONWID…E have three families by December 2013. But before we even opened SENIO the doors, we had 10 families ready to move in with two on the RELOCATRIO waiting list. Thank you to the many people who have joined Anthem SERVICES N Senior Living and Anthem Senior Retreat and let us become part of your wonderful families! Anthem &in

BMX THE RUSH OF

F

rom casual riding to competitive racing, BMXers take riding a bike to a whole new level at Black Mountain BMX. “The only requirement is you just need to know how to ride a bike,” said 14-yearold Luke Lipowicz, who has been riding since he was 11. Luke became hooked on the thrill of BMX during his first visit. “It’s great because you don’t have to build your own jumps,” he said. And you don’t have to have your own equipment to give it a try. Black Mountain rents out bikes, helmets and all necessary riding gear. Luke recommends starting at a slower rate of speed and getting to know the track and its surroundings. “It’s a great way to meet new friends, and you might just develop a new hobby or a love for racing.” io

Get Personal

Cool Halloween ideas abound, but sifting through them to find what fits your style, budget and skill level can be draining. Start by deciding what you want and what you have, then go online.

Cheap and Easy Mix and match these valuable household items: • Cardboard, poster board, paper can be used for small, simple structures. • Use flour to create a ghostly, dusty, decayed look. Also handy for paper maché. • Washable markers make cheap, easy-to-apply makeup. (May take one or two scrubs to get completely out. Good thing Halloween is on Friday.) • Ketchup packets. • Bed sheets. • Old clothes (or clothes from a thrift shop) can be the base of a costume, scarecrow or sewing project. • Yard waste. Why pay for plastic sticks and leaves when you have real ones? Speakers: Add bluetooth attachments or use your phone’s speaker for spooky sound. Download effects from freesound.org and combine using free Windows Movie Maker.

HOLIDAY » TREATS

A New Love for Pumpkin Pumpkin Bars Thank goodness this recipe has been revealed. Now we can stop fighting over these delicious treats in the office. Here you go, Marcus… You’re welcome.

Directions 1 Mix eggs, sugar, oil and pumpkin with electric mixer until light and fluffy. 2 In separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, cinnamon, salt and baking soda. 3 Add dry ingredients to pumpkin mixture and mix at low speed until combined. 4 Bake in 13-by-10inch greased baking pan at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

Icing 1 While bars are cooling, mix cream cheese and butter in medium bowl with electric mixer until smooth. 2 Add sugar and mix at low speed until combined. Mix in vanilla. 3 Spread on cooled pumpkin bars.

HOLIDAY » TREATS Pumpkin Scones Let’s get one thing clear before we get started. “There’s nothing healthy about scones,” said former executive chef Terese Marsing, who provided this recipe. “It’s just sugar, butter and cream, with some flour to hold it all together.” But if you’re going to have one, here’s a delicious fall version.

4 ½ cups all-purpose flour ½ cup packed brown sugar 4 tsp. baking powder 3 tsp. pumpkin pie spice 1 tsp. ground cinnamon ½ tsp. baking soda ½ tsp. salt 1 cup butter, cut into pea-sized pieces 2 eggs 1 ¼ cups canned pumpkin ¾ cup heavy cream OPTIONAL ADD-INS • Chocolate chips • Cinnamon chips • Chopped, crystallized ginger • Sprinkling of cinnamon sugar, or coarse sugar • Raisins or other dried fruit

• •

Directions 1 Refrigerate butter, eggs, pumpkin and cream. 2 Mix together the first seven ingredients in a large bowl. Add butter pieces to the dry ingredients. Use your hand to separate the pieces of butter to avoid clumping. 3 In a second bowl, whisk together eggs, canned pumpkin and ½ cup of cream (reserving ¼ cup for later). 4 Stir wet ingredients into the dry until moistened. Fold in add-ins, if desired. 5 Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Don’t knead the dough; Roll it out carefully, spreading evenly to make a “shaggy dough.” It doesn’t have to hold together—it just needs to be fairly consistent without pockets of dry ingredients. 6 Cut the dough in half, patting each side into an 8-inch circle. Then cut each circle into eight wedges and place 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheet. 6 Bake at 400 degrees for 12–15 minutes, or until golden. Cool 10 minutes on wire rack. Serve warm.

Cheers to a new chapter for Legends Bar & Grill. New owner Clayton Boop and his partners hope to create a more family-friendly atmosphere.

“It’s a name that’s recognized in the community. It did, at one time, have a high involvement in community activities and that’s the legacy we’d like to perpetuate,” said Clayton Boop, a long-time Anthem resident who, with his brother Clifton, bought the restaurant with the help of Ryan Voitik and a couple investors.

“We take with us many memories and friendships along the way,” Vicki Smith wrote on Legends’ Facebook page. “We wish the new owners the best as they take Legends to the next step,” said Smith.

And, the brothers have a special affection for Legends. When Clifton’s twins were born with heart defects in 2006, Legends held a fundraiser amassing thousands in support of the family. “So we’ve always

NEWS » BUSINESS had a fondness for them, even as we watched from the sidelines as they struggled over the last three or four years,” Boop said. Legends had largely evolved into a neighborhood watering hole—a self-described “Cheers” of Anthem. It catered to loyal regulars and drew patrons with weekly poker and ladies’ nights. The goal now, Boop said, is to return to more of a family-oriented restaurant. To do that, he plans to shift the focus to women and children. The men, he said, will follow… as long as the game is on. The first step is to freshen the interior including new upholstery for the booths, bathroom renovations including a new baby changing station, repairs and replacements on much of the kitchen equipment, and a deep cleaning.

The menu will be revamped to focus on quality, instead of quantity. Expect a smaller menu, better salads and lighter options. A carefully crafted kids’ menu will feature affordable choices. Look for new staff—or maybe very old staff—as the Boop brothers strive to recapture some of the friendly service for which the restaurant was known years ago. Legends will hold on to its sports bar heritage, going up against nearby Rookies and the newly reopened Rosati’s [See page 31].
