The Belly Fat in the Room

Create Habits, Not Resolutions

Q:

No matter how many sit-ups I do, I can’t lose the bulge over my belt. What can I do to finally reduce this stubborn fat?

S Scott Skinner is owner

of SkinSport Fitness Centers (Anthem and Biltmore locations) specializing in High Intensity training and nutrition to help you shed fat quickly.

tubborn belly fat is a frustrating thing. It sits on your waist, makes your clothes tight and uncomfortable, and absolutely messes with your confidence. But don’t give up—belly fat can be dealt with! Its going to take some hard work and real dedication, but here are three things that can definitely put you well on your way to tight, toned abs. 1 Cut Out the Sugar Drinks, cereal, pasta sauce and ●

condiments—even supposedly healthy things like protein bars, yogurt cups and energy drinks are loaded with sugar. If you buy packaged foods, keep an eye on the ingredients. Natural is better. If you absolutely must have something sweet, go for a healthy piece of fruit. 2 Stop Bad Snacking I’m a firm believer in snacking ●

throughout the day to rev up a slow metabolism. But many of the snacks people choose are filled with things that hurt, not help us. If your snack is crunchy, salty and you are not certain of what is in it, it is probably not good for you and you are unwittingly contributing to that unwanted belly fat. A small amount of protein and fiber as a snack will go much further to speed your metabolism and help shrink that belly.

3 Up the Exercise Listen: If you are not constantly challenging your body with exercise, you are going to store belly fat. Challenge your body daily with an effective mix of resistance training mixed with some cardiovascular exercise in order to lose that unwanted roll. Sit-ups alone won’t do it. (Remember, fat tissue cannot be turned into muscle.) Work your entire body regularly to get the results you’re after. LUMINATE | FEBRUARY 2015

Q:

Every year I make a New Year’s resolution and promise myself that, this time, I am actually going to follow through. But, I have already broken it! I am angry and frustrated. Please, help!

F

irst, let me commend you on wanting to make positive changes in your life. Also, understand that less than 5 percent of all New Year’s resolutions are achieved—if that helps. I personally don’t recommend them. I prefer to think of any positive change we want to make as creating a new habit, not something that happens on a timetable. Here’s how to set successful goals: 1 Focus on the end result, and then begin to create habits ■

that will lead you in that direction. The key is to keep moving toward your goal. Habits are steps that are repeated until they eventually become the norm. You literally reteach your brain what you desire. 2 Let go of the timeline. Just like a muscle needs training, ■

so does your brain. It takes a minimum of 21 days to create a new habit, and even longer when you are stressed. 3 ■

Start with a small goal and progress from there. Too often, we take a huge bite and end up choking on our failure (as you are now). Once you achieve your first goal, you will have the confidence to set another. 4 ■

Use your core beliefs and values, not “willpower” to guide you through the process. We often assume if we have a strong willpower, we should succeed. But, willpower changes every day. Some days you are stronger emotionally than others. Core values, however, remain consistent. 5 ■

If you have a setback, give yourself permission to start over the next day. Remember it’s the goal, not the timetable. Ultimately, you will reach your desired outcome if you focus on using these tips. Good luck! LUMINATE | FEBRUARY 2015

The Problem with

Grapefruit By Sydney Marsing

L

et this stand as a reminder. Everything we put in our bodies, no matter how “natural,” is made of chemicals. Natural supplements, holistic remedies, even household foods can do harm, have side effects or cause dangerous reactions. Consider the grapefruit. This innocuous seeming, fresh smelling, bitter citrus has been praised since the 1930s as the cornerstone of the grapefruit diet. While research provides no evidence to support the fruit’s fat-burning properties, some studies have shown it may have positive effects on cholesterol, metabolism and insulin resistance. And it is loaded with Vitamin C. What makes grapefruit unique—earning it a brief yet jarring mention in the disclaimer portion of a number of drug commercials—is its ability to deactivate certain chemicals in the intestine, allowing the body to absorb so much more of certain oral medications that it can cause complications. Research shows grapefruit or grapefruit juice can interact with a wide number of drugs, ranging from one used to treat heartburn to antidiabetic agents, HIV treatments, a children’s anesthetic and several heart medications. And, the effects of grapefruit have been shown to last up to 24 hours. Be certain to let your doctors know if you eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice. LUMINATE | FEBRUARY 2015

Seriously, if your time is stretched thin between your job, your kids and your spouse, your fitness routine is usually the first casualty.

Good News Research shows

you don’t need a lot of time to get a great workout. Try high-intensity interval training (HIIT)—with your doctor’s approval of course—to get you back in the fitness groove in as little as 10 minutes a day, 3 to 5 days a week.

1 Warm-up for 3 minutes ■ on a stationary bike or jogging in place at a slow pace.

2 Do a Tabata Set Do any ■ exercise you choose (cardio,

squats, push-up, etc.) at your all-out pace for 20 seconds, rest 10 seconds and repeat— seven more times.

3 Cool Down Jog lightly in ■ place for 3 minutes and… Voilà! you have a dynamite 10-minute routine! Go get em, and let me know how you're doing out there!
