FEAR NOT: 6 STEPS TO CONQUER YOUR FEARS

WELCOME TO THE imortgage FAMILY

By Darren Hardy, CEO and Entrepreneur Mentor There is a Japanese proverb, “Fear is only as deep as the mind allows.”

Tracey Carrino Loan Consultant UTC NMLS ID 327180

Fear while an instinctual part of each and every one of us, should not control us or drive our actions, except in the case of extreme danger like being attacked by a shark or other such creatures. Obvious right? Then why do so many let fear, some knowingly and most unknowingly drive their daily actions and limit the life they can lead? Well, it doesn’t limit everyone. Torre DeRoche suffers from Selachophobia, or what she fondly has renamed Horriblehorriblesharkydeathphobia. This is merely one among many of her fears when it comes to the ocean.

BY THE STATS

Yet in her mid-twenties, she agreed to embark on an adventure that would mean sailing across the Pacific Ocean and facing every single one of those maritime related fears head on. Let me paint the picture for you. Torre was in her mid-twenties, a recent Australian transplant and she met a man in a bar in San Francisco. Typical girl meets boy story, except one thing, this boy asked the girl to go on a trip across the ocean with him. Well, the lovestruck girl agreed. Don’t forget the fears now. Torre, who wrote a memoir about her journey, reflects that love trumped fear and that she didn’t want fear to be the reason she said no. So what did she do? Like any intelligent person, she dug deep and learned. She read books, signed up for classes and talked to various people all about what she feared most: “being in the middle of the ocean in the middle of the night ” and oh yeah, the sharks too. Eventually Torre embarked on the fearful journey and to her surprise she did more than just survive, she thrived. Torre discovered that fear is “often all about the anticipation” and that when “something bad is actually happening, you click into action and the anxiety goes away.” Now Torre is careful to note that she didn’t eradicate her fears.

But she realized how to separate reasonable from unreasonable fears. She realized that the unreasonable ones, once acknowledged, would fade away. The reasonable fears could still be conquered but not removed. There is a key lesson in Torre’s discovery: To conquer means to overcome and take control. You might not be able to eradicate your fears, but you can certainly take control of them and use them to work for you and not against you, or at least prevent them from stopping you from doing the things you want in life, like Torre. Now, overcoming and conquering fear something I have studied intensely because of my mentoring and training of CEOs and entrepreneurs in helping them to reach and realize

their inner potential and achieve their big ideas. As a special treat for you on this topic, I am going to give you the strategies I wrote about in The Entrepreneur Roller Coaster. book which outlines how to face down fear and gives you the six brain hacks you need to conquerthe fears that right now might be holding youback from the success, the lifestyle you could achieve and the life you were meant to live. This is pulled right from the audiobook version of The Entrepreneur Roller Coaster — Why NOW is the time to #JoinTheRide. 1. Get real. Separate fantasy from reality. 2. and avoiding those things.

3. 20 seconds is all it takes. Feel the fear, shut your brain off and step in and do the thing you fear. Then of course you can still be a coward 99.98% of the time and still crush it, so it’s all good.

6. Turn fear into fun by pursuing it and celebrating it.

darrenhardy.success.com, @darrenhardy

4. Focus on the task ONLY. Give no mind or attention to the outcome. 5. Habituate yourself. This is the best approach of all.

Just do the thing you fear, over and over in great volume for a sustained period of time, and it will lose it’s power over you. What you once feared will become your unique advantages and strengths as everyone else will still be afraid

The only thing stopping you from realizing your God-given talents and capabilities is fear. Turn fear into fun and you will open the floodgates of your potential. Nothing, and I mean nothing will be able to stop you then.

Worrying is like paying a debt you don’t owe.

A TONGUE-IN-CHEEK REMINDER OF WHAT IT M By Jeff Haden, Ghostwriter, Speaker, Inc. Magazine Contributing Editor One day I’d like to meet someone who is actually rich. Sometimes I think I’ve found one but it always turns out I’m wrong. No matter how rich I assumed the person to be ... within a few minutes I find out just how “poor” that person really is. Take the guy who sold his company for more than $40 million. (Well, actually $100 million in total; $40 million is his share.) I was sure he was rich. Then he told me how for tax and estate planning purposes he had structured the disbursement of funds over 10 years. So sure, on paper he may be “worth” $40 million, but he only gets around $4 million each year. And despite all that nifty financial planning the taxes are still so high he doesn’t see nearly that much. It’s a bummer. Or take the guy who just splashed a cool $450 grand on a Lexus LFA with the Nürburgring package. His everyday car is a Porsche 911 Turbo S. I was sure he was rich. Then he told me what he wants most in life is a Bugatti Veyron only they cost about $2 million. Sure, he has money, he said, but he doesn’t have that kind of money. He thinks about it all the time. It’s a bummer. Or take the guy with the 110-foot yacht. Strictly speaking it’s a ship, not a boat, since it’s big enough to carry several small boats and a couple of jet skis on a platform at the stern. And it has a pool. I was sure he was rich. Then he told me how expensive the yacht is just to own: fixed costs like cleaning, upkeep, berth, and crew run over six figures a year. And what about the expense of actually taking it for a cruise? He told me firing it up is so expensive he sometimes has to think twice about whether to take it out of the harbor. It’s a bummer. Or take the guy who -- I know it’s a cliché, but it’s still true -started a company in his garage, financing it with credit cards and a loan from his father-in-law. A couple decades later his company owns its building (and a few more), employs 500 people, and generates tens of millions in annual revenue. And he put his three kids through Ivy League schools and then gave them significant seed money to start their own businesses. I was sure he was rich. Then he explained how he still has to work 60- to 70-hour weeks and can maybe take one week of vacation a year. Sure,

he would like to have more free time, but running a company that size requires constant and total attention. Why, it could all go away in an instant, he said. And then what would happen to his family? The very thought makes him shudder. It’s a bummer. So I decided to set my sights on a different target. By definition there can’t be that many rich people; maybe statistical probability was the problem? So I decided to look for someone who is happy. After all, not everyone can be rich ... but anyone can be happy. I thought I found one when I met an entrepreneur who had just landed her first big customer. Not just a big customer, a truly enabling customer, one who made it possible for her to hire much-needed employees, make long-delayed equipment purchases, and finally get creditors off her back. I figured that surely made her feel happy. Then she told me how much she hates to recruit and interview … and then actually having to supervise those employees on a daily basis? Ugh. She told me how adding equipment, maintaining a larger inventory, and managing the huge increase in production was such a pain. Don’t get her wrong, she told me as she looked around to make sure no one overheard, but she often longs for the good old days when life was a lot simpler. It’s kind of a bummer. Or take the guy who, after years of putting out feelers and constant hints, was finally

... AND AT PLAY

MEANS TO BE RICH invited to serve on the board of a startup. The company has potential, he said, but it’s not Twitter. Or Facebook. Or even Fancy. Now serving on one of those boards would be cool. This? He thought it would be fun, but it’s kind of a bummer. The guy who just bought a bigger house? Bummed because it takes so much work to clean. The guy who just doubled his income? Bummed because now his taxes are higher. The gal who just landed her dream job? Bummed because now her daily commute is half an hour longer. Seems no one I meet, no matter how much money or success they’ve achieved, is actually rich. Not really. And although I’m stretching the premise to make a point, it seems no one I meet, no matter how fulfilling and gratifying their life might be, is actually happy. Not really. But that’s okay. Someday I might And hopefully

I’ll keep looking. find someone. that someone is you.

WHY WE SHOULD COOK AND EAT AT H By Andrew Kobylarz, Health and Fitness Author When the weekend rolls around it’s time to relax, decompress, and recharge for the week ahead. So we go out to eat and drink. Considering the plethora of food options that modern society provides us, it’s pretty hard to stay at home and cook, cause you can order Seamless or just go out. Right? Thing is, we do it too much. It’s nothing new to hear that there has been a rise in obesity in recent years. But what is interesting is the correlation between more eating out, grabbing takeout, and our growing waistlines. While there’s certainly no direct causation to obesity and going out, or takeout, it’s something well worth exploring. The question to answer from this, why don’t we cook at home and eat with others more often? Going Out to Eat is a Rising Trend For most people in the 1950s it was an event to go out to grab a nice dinner. Now it’s the norm. I’ve even gone out to eat quite a bit myself in the past year or so. Nowadays, going to a “nicer” place to eat is the event, because we dine out so often! The New York Times published a great article outlining the rising trend of going out to eat. In 1955, 19 percent of the American family’s food budget went to dining out. Flashforward to 2002 and that number has doubled. Given the fact that the restaurant business is a $709.2 billion market and growing, according to the National Restaurant Association, it’s safe to assume that more and more of the American family’s budget is going towards takeout or dining out. But we should cook at home more often, not just because it’s cost efficient. Rather because we know what we’re putting into our bodies, it’s healthier, and it has a positive effect on our relationships as well. Why Cooking at Home is Healthier I’m not saying that you should cut eating out altogether, just don’t do it so often. The biggest reason is because you have the knowledge of what you’re putting into your body, you can control portions size, and the nutrients that make up your meal. The restaurant industry isn’t the only thing that’s grown in the past 50 years; it’s also been our portion sizes. Just take

one look at the serving sizes of a soda on this Huffington Post infographic. In 1950, the average serving size of soda was seven ounces, now it’s 42 ounces! That’s six times the average size of the past. And it’s not just sodas; everything is larger than it once was. As if portion size wasn’t bad enough, each restaurant serving size is filled with large servings of sodium, oil, fat, and sugar. In moderation it’s not bad, but on a consistent basis? It starts to make a lot of sense that our society is overweight. Cooking at home has so many benefits:

MMUNITY & CULTURE CORNER

HOME MORE OFTEN -You’ll be able to manage your portion sizes. -You’ll know what and how your food was cooked. -You can add protein and healthy fats into your meals. -It’s cost effective.

Joan’s Decadent Dessert Party |

Casey’s Date Night

Need I say more? The final reason that we should be cooking at home isn’t so much related to physical health, though that’s a big part of it: cooking at home can solidify your existing relationships. Cooking with Others Strengthens Relationships There’s a very human element to cooking with others. It’s something that we’ve done for ages, it’s part of our history, it’s something engrained in who we are as humans. You break bread with people who are important to you—whether it’s family, friends, or a significant other. You, me, everyone cooks and eats with one another. John Favreau, director of Chef, discusses with Tim Ferris on his podcast the research that went into the movie. During the filmmaking he discusses having fun with a group of people, who just worked on cooking meals and eating together. Jon also admitted that he didn’t have much to talk about with his family, given his out of the ordinary life. Cooking meals together though seemed to bridge that gap. And that’s because cooking with others, and eating with them, is the ultimate icebreaker. The type of food, the cuisine, and helping each other to make a good meal is guaranteed to add up to some sort of interesting conversation. Whether it is just getting to know someone, catching up, or finding common ground with someone you have known for years—like your family. Anne Fishel, an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychology at Harvard Medical School wrote in the Washington Post that kids who eat with their families do better in every way: from grades, to eating healthier, to not engaging in high-risk activities, and eating at home even provides them with a more positive outlook on life. If you live alone, or maybe don’t have that big of a social circle, try inviting others to come prepare and dine with you in your own home. It’s personal, builds friendships, and connects other people. It’s a win-win for everyone involved. Though there’s no direct causation to cooking and eating at home. There’s a lot of research that says you will be healthier and better connected with others when you do. So cook with someone, eat with someone, and enjoy. aloha.com/shop/contributors/andrew-kobylarz, @askobylarz
