Festivals are the thing at this time of year - there's major events happening in Bermagui, Merimbula, Central Tilba and Candelo, as well as art exhibitions all along the coast. Bermagui plays host to the Bermagui Seaside Fair, Sculpture Bermagui, Latin Spirit at Four Winds and the opening of the new Camel Rock Brewery & Cafe - and that's all within one month! In Merimbula there's the highly popular EAT Merimbula, a premium foodie providore event that celebrates the coast's best chefs and food entrepreneurs. George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in

& surrounds
the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whalewatching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment. It's a fantastic place to take children, with touch tanks and all sorts of interesting things. The Discovery Centre also run Rocky Rambles, Snorkel Tours and other activities during school holidays. Eden is a great base to explore the area south to the border, and is surrounded by National Parks and State Forests. The Light to Light Walk is one of Australia's iconic bush walks, taking 3 days to walk from Green Cape Lighthouse in the south to Boyd's Tower in the north.

Kittyhawks Down exhibition at Eden Killer Whale Museum These airmen were all awarded Purple Hearts for their contribution to the Second World War and their stories are told through photographs and artefacts recovered from the wreck sites. Kittyhawks Down is on display at Eden Killer Whale Museum until 4 June 2017.
Eden Killer Whale Museum’s latest exhibition Kittyhawks Down commemorates the 75th anniversary of the loss of four American pilots in Australia during the Second World War. Around 1 million American personnel served in Australia during the war as a result of new military ties being developed with America over Britain. On 28 March 1942, four Curtiss P-40E Kittyhawks left Canberra on a training flight for the Snowy Mountains. Hampered by thick fog and bad weather, the pilots found themselves hopelessly lost on the Far South Coast. It is believed two of the pilots may have clipped mid air above Eden, resulting in their fatal crashes near Wonboyn and on Mount Imlay. Second Lieutenants Fielder and Namola successfully landed their planes on Aslings Beach in Eden and Berridale (south of Cooma) but sadly both were later killed while serving in Darwin.

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses.
Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafĂŠs, restaurants, retailers, pubs, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an old-fashioned milkbar. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue. Follow the river inland around the corner from the playground area until you find the walking track. This track has viewing platforms that offer beautiful views of the cliffs on the opposite bank and the beautiful clear water below. Heading south toward Eden from Pambula, turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, at the opposite end of the lake/river system. Pambula Lake is the operational base for several local oyster growers. Don't leave without trying some of the delicious freshly-shucked oysters, grown in the clean waters of Pambula Lake.

Immerse yourself in nature at Panboola! Go for a stroll, ride your bike, watch the birds or simply enjoy nature. It’s good for the body and it’s great for the soul. Pambula is blessed to have Panboola on its doorstep. Grab a snack from one of the many nearby cafes and head to the picnic tables by the side of Tips Billabong. Escape the heat and enjoy a shaded walk through the Waterbird Sanctuary. The 2.6km walk out to the Pambula River is one of our best kept secrets – you are almost guaranteed to have the sandy beach to yourself! Bike riders love Panboola – it’s a perfect venue for families to enjoy a safe and easy ride together. Cycle around the Old Pambula Racecourse or pass through if you are riding out to lunch at Oaklands. Panboola is a bird watchers
paradise with over 160 species recorded. You might even get to see the elusive Southern Emu Wren amongst the shrubs if you travel quietly out toward the river via the Corridor Circuit. The Panboola Centre at Watson’s Waterhole (behind the Idlewilde Motel) provides an alternate entry point with sealed car park, picnic tables and stunning vistas. Also to be found here is our original beautiful eagle sculpture. This artwork was stolen some time ago however earlier this year, much to our joy, was found and returned to us. Panboola sits on community owned land and is managed by a team of volunteers. We are located on the southern edge of Pambula and are open 7 days a week. Everyone is welcome.

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafés, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the

region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafés with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Land a catch with Headland Fishing Charters Going fishing with Headland Fishing Charters is a real adventure for both young and old, xperienced fishers or beginners. Owners Gavin and Lisa Rikken love nothing better than to share their experience fishing the waters off Merimbula. Bushwalking in National Parks Spend an hour, a day or more walking in the National Parks and reserves of the Region. The walks featured here are some of the more popular ones, but there are many short and medium distance walks available at almost all destinations within National Parks in the region. Please note that for all these walks, strong footwear should be worn, carry food and water, and take clothing suitable for changing weather conditions. 1. The Big Hole/Marble Arch Deua National Park 4km return Approx. 1.5 hours Big Hole 13km return Approx. 5.5 hours Marble Arch

The north-western section of Deua National Park is a karst or limestone layer containing 400 million year old cave systems. The Big Hole and Marble Arch are two fascinating features which can be seen without going underground. Please note that permission is required to enter some caves. The walk starts from Berlang Camping Area, 45 minutes drive south of Braidwood along the Krawarree Road. After fording the knee-deep Shoalhaven River, an easy walk leads to a viewing platform from where the remarkable Big Hole, a chasm some 96 metres deep and 50 metres wide, can be safely viewed. The track to Marble Arch continues from below the viewing platform. From the base of the hill the track is gently undulating until the very steep 150 metre descent into the Marble Arch. Wide bands of marble can be seen in the walls of the canyon and cavern roof and beautiful ferns cling to the lower sides of the canyon. Please note: The Shoalhaven River may become impassable after heavy rain. Do not enter the Marble Arch if Reedy Creek has risen or there are storms in the area.

This newly constructed walk connects Boyd’s Tower to Green Cape Lightstation, about 40km by road south of Eden. This magnificent coastal walk can be done over a couple of days or in easy half day sections. Spectacular ocean views, red 4 rock platforms, long sandy beaches and a surprising array of different coastal landscapes, plant communities and animal habitats are found on this walk. Humpback whales and perhaps southern right whales may be seen on their NEW SOU TH southern migration during the spring months. Start this walk from Kianinny Bay via Tathra in the north or from Turingal Head via Wallagoot Lake Boat Club in the south. Rugged coastline, sandy and pebbly beaches and spectacular cliffs are features of this walk. The coastal heathland, dominated by dwarf oaks, is a haven in winter and spring for nectar-feeding birds like the eastern spinebill. At Boulder Bay, a fragile and uncommon remnant rainforest lies unusually close to the sea. Camping is available at Hobart Beach on the southern side of Wallagoot Lake. Park use fees apply.

Candelo Village Festival returns with a new format
The Candelo Village Festival is a biennial celebration of the village culture and arts of Candelo. In 2017 the Festival takes a new shape with considerable changes to the format from years gone by. Music, theatre, local forums and literary events will be held over the entire weekend of 21st - 23rd April. The Town Hall is the primary venue for the Festival audience this year; ably demonstrating its role as Candelo's vibrant cultural hub. Exciting musical acts include the superb singer and trumpeter Vince Jones in full quartet form, and Sandy Evans alongside Bobby Singh and Greg Sheehan presenting ‘Kapture’, A tribute to South African freedom fighter Ahmid Kathrada. For those who would rather be immersed in a world of rock, folk and story, be sure to catch Liz Stringer as she presents her new album “All the Bridges” with 4 piece band featuring David Williams (Augie March), Tim Keegan (Mia Dyson) and Alice Williams. Saturday the 22nd of April will see the Village come alive with a free fair in the Candelo

Park. Market stalls will surround the village square and encompass a community stage featuring local and other artists throughout the day. There will be art making workshops, entertainment for families and opportunities for younger performers to gain invaluable experience on stage. Around town there will be an exhibition of historical photographs and maps of Candelo Village and its environs at the Crossing Gallery. The Candelo Blues Club will be hosting free live music at the Pub all afternoon, and The Candelo General Store, the Service Station, Two Blokes Food and the Bowling Club will all be open for business and contributing to the festival. Fine food will also be available throughout the park all weekend. Camping will be available onsite this year and proceeds will go to supporting and maintaining the community park. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. Archibald Prize Exhibition comes to BV Regional Gallery This autumn, the Bega Valley Regional Gallery is hosting the touring exhibition of The Archibald Prize, featuring all the finalists from 2016. The Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes are major art awards run by the Art Gallery of New South Wales. All three awards are open competitions, meaning anyone who has been resident in Australia or New Zealand in the previous 12 months can enter. The Archibald Prize is awarded annually to the best portrait, 'preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in art, letters, science or politics, painted by any artist resident in Australasia’. High profile, eagerly anticipated and often controversial, the Archibald Prize for portraiture dates back 95 years: it was established in 1921 from a bequest made by J.F. Archibald, with the aim of fostering portraiture, as well as supporting artists and perpetuating the memory of great Australians. Over the years some of Australia’s most prominent artists have entered and the subjects have been equally celebrated in their fields. One of the paintings in the exhibition is Carla Fletcher's painting of fashion designer Linda Jackson (below right). When describing her work, Carla said ‘This painting of Australian fashion designer Linda Jackson is the twin-soul portrait of my 2015 Archibald Prize finalist portrait of Jenny Kee,’ says Carla Fletcher. ‘Together they are magic, transcendent, creative collaborators who electrified Australia with bolts of luminous colour and dreaming. From their first meeting in the early 1970s there was an instant soul connection, a connection that remains strong. ‘Inspired by the colour and energy of the Australian landscape, Jackson crusaded a new path for Australian fashion. She explored
new approaches to textiles and incorporated never-before-seen bold Australian motifs drawn from nature, including her magical neon opal prints and Sturt’s Desert Pea flowers. Jackson and Kee sold unique, handmade one-off artisan pieces from Kee’s frock salon Flamingo Park in Sydney’s Strand Arcade to an array of buyers, from Sydney fashionistas to Princess Di and David Bowie.’ Opening night of the Archibald Prize exhibition is on Friday 24 March at 6pm, and it continues until 13 May 2017. With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. The Wharf was damaged during the East Coast Low that hit the region in June, and it may still be closed to the public for some time. You can still enjoy the view from the car park adjacent

to the Wharf though. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground. Both are located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. There are plenty of National Parks within easy driving range of Tathra. Bournda NP is about 15mins south toward Tura Beach, the Mimosa Rocks NP hugs the coast north towards Bermagui and Biamanga NP is north-west of Tathra between the Princes Highway and the coast. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafĂŠs and restaurants. Make sure you have a coffee at Cliff Place in Beach St at the top of town, to really appreciate Tathra's spectacular ocean views.
Enjoy birds and more at On the Perch The Award Winning On the Perch Bird Park has become one of the ‘must see’ attractions of the Sapphire Coast since opening in September 2015. With about 75 species of bird on display the focus is conservation and education. Visitors can enjoy a total of six exhibits; Asia/Pacific, Inland Australia, African Savannah, Temperate Australia, Kimberley region of WA and the ‘Chicken Run’. The three walk-in aviaries (Asia/ Pacific, Inland Australia, Temperate Australia), are perfect for budding photographers or those that just like to sit amongst the birds. Combine your visit with our Meet the Keeper talks at 11am and 1pm to learn even

SCULPTURE BERMAGUI 3rd - 13th March, Bermagui The 11th annual Sculpture Bermagui this year has a new format that embraces the night sky, music and more. As well as wandering through the large sculptural pieces dotted around Bermagui during the day, there will also be guided tours by torchlight, original music composed around several large works, Taiko drumming and fire spectacles. The opening Cermony will be held amongst the small sculptures in the Bermagui Community Centre. Sculpture Bermagui, formerly Sculpture on the Edge, has helped place Bermagui firmly on the art world map, with the participation of high profile artists.

Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese-making industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production.
The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’. The picturesque historic village of Cobargo is more than a working village though; it's a creative, vibrant place that reflects the diverse, talented locals. Cobargo's Laneway Markets are an initiative of Cobargo Creators and happen every Saturday from 9am till 1pm. Enjoy the friendly Cobargo vibe whilst browsing fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts, craft supplies and other locally made goodies. There’s also trashy treasures and treasured trash for the bargain hunters and the odd busker to entertain. On the 1st Saturday of the month there is also a car boot sale held in conjunction with the market. Cobargo still has it's old favourites like the unique Bangles Pottery shop, where the owner throws pots in the front window, and South Coast Leather, where the scent of leather wafts from the door. Twig & Feather is also full of scented delights, with hand-made candles and a unique range of homewares, kitchenware and stationery.

They are the matrices of printed works created in a perpetually changing process of placement and colour at the press in her studio. The plates continue to corrode over time, a slow returning to the matrix of the planet. Textural artist, Janine Scrivens, works on large canvasses with a mix of media dominated by the colours of the earth. Sculptor Deborah Redwood’s large pieces display a lacelike delicacy through the attention to detail of the welded metal.

Bermagui Seaside Fair… 20 years! The Bermagui Seaside Fair celebrates its 20th year on Saturday 11th March with a program chock-a-block with entertainment and activities for all ages. The theme for the fancy dress street parade which starts at 10am is “20th Birthday Mad Hatters Party” and there’s great prizes for those who dress to the theme. The 4th Umbrellas of Bermagui includes 15 large shade umbrellas sponsored by local businesses and hand decorated by local artists. These magnificent works of art will showcase in the street parade and then on Dickinson Oval until the auction at 12.45pm. From its first 3 years, Umbrellas of Bermagui has donated over $14,000 to local youth groups! Musical entertainment includes Taiko Stonewave with their amazing drumming, Tony Jaggers, Sacred Cow, the Marji Curran Band and local indigenous rapper Gabadoo and Tekeisha with song and ukulele. There’s kickboxing and World Wide Dance demonstrations. Oops! The Clown will join in the fun again, and the ever popular
pet pageant will draw a big crowd. The cultural program will be held at the Bermagui Surf Club from Friday 10th to Sunday 12th and includes the ‘Art in Place’ Themed Art Show and Photographic and Arts & Crafts exhibitions. The official opening where you can meet the exhibitors is on Thursday 9th March from 6pm to 8pm. At 8am the Bermagui Blessing will be held at the Fishermen’s Wharf. Check out the yachting exhibition from Bermagui’s beautiful harbour to Horseshoe Bay. Poet’s Breakfast and bacon and egg rolls will be on Dickinson Oval from 8am. Bermagui sculpture celebrates 11th year with new format Sculpture Bermagui has been renewed! In its eleventh year, from 3 - 13 March 2017 under new guidance, it offers an exciting new format that embraces the night sky, music and more. As well as the usual daylight exhibitions of large sculptures, we are adding guided tours by torchlight, original music composed around several large works, Taiko drumming and fire spectacles, all on the Dickinson Point headland overlooking the ocean. The Opening Ceremony, held amongst the Small sculptures in the Bermagui Community Centre, launches this year's exhibition across both venues. 2016 marked the tenth anniversary of Sculpture Bermagui (formerly Sculpture on the Edge
- SOTE) with over 8,500 visitors viewing the diverse sculptures on display. The event has helped place Bermagui firmly on the art world map, involving as it does high profile, visiting and local sculptors. This community supported event also features collaborative installations that connect with our local Yuin people, sharing interpretation and stories from elders and long term locals. Soak up some special Tilba magic at the 32nd Tilba Festival Now in its 32nd year, the Easter highlight on the Eurobodalla’s Nature Coast is the Tilba Easter Festival. Sensing an opportunity to cater to Narooma's discerning coffee drinkers, Mark opened the Montague Coffee shop and retail outlet later that year. Montague Coffee's client base has grown to the extent that Mark now posts online sales to customers all over Australia, as well as supplying wholesale customers from Eden to Wollongong. Montague Coffee has a wide
range of roasts to suit the different palates of its customers, with many requesting specific single origin coffee, blends, Fairtrade sourced and organic coffees. These can all be crafted to different levels of roasting, from medium to dark. Montague Coffee also grinds coffee to suit different method of brewing; everything suitable from plungers through to espresso machines. The township of Mogo was originally settled when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000. To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rsuh Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time. The Original Gold Rush Colony has won the Cultural and Heritage Tourism award at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards four times, as well as winning the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award in 2011. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth
century timber buildings. There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different. Also in Mogo is the internationally recognised Mogo Zoo. Providing world standard facilities for over 200 animals of more than 39 rare and exotic species, Mogo Zoo is committed to the survival of endangered species, including the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’. Not far from Mogo is the Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Gardens that features plants native to the Eurobodalla region. Stroll along the 6km of pathways observing a variety of birds and other native wildlife. Two tracks provided access to the Gardens for those with prams or limited mobility.

Step back in time at The Original Gold Rush Colony The Original Gold Rush Colony at Mogo is located in a 4.5ha natural bush setting and is a great place to step back in time, re-living Australia’s Pioneering Era. Guided tours run four times each day, and you can pan for real gold, see the working rock crusher and explore the mine tunnel. Daily Tour times are 10.30am, 12 noon, 1.30pm and 3pm. Tours last approximately 1 hour and then you can pan for Gold as long as you like. The Original Gold Rush Colony has taken out the award in Heritage and Cultural Tourism at the South Coast Tourism awards in 2008, 2009 and 2010, and the Heritage and Cultural Tourism Hall of Fame in 2013. At the 2015 awards the Gold Rush Colony won Gold in the Budget Accommodation section and Silver in the Heritage and Culture category.
The Original Gold Rush Colony has on-site accommodation with 9 fully self contained 2 bedroom cabins. On-site guests receive free entry into the Gold Rush and can take a tour and pan for gold. Other activities on site are a rustic mini golf course and a unique Mogo Maze. The maze is suitable for all ages and has proven popular since opening. The Mogo Maze has a Eureka theme, and has the Eureka flag hanging on the sailing mast at the entrance, and above, the magnificent mural painted by talented staff member Trevor Hyde. Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years.
